"IntroductionThe copper-molybdenum property of Brenda Mines Ltd. is located 18 miles north west of Peachland in the Okanagan Valley of the Southern Central interior of British Columbia. The actual site is 50 miles north of the international boundary and 150 air miles east of Vancouver at an elevation of 5000 feet above sea level. The earliest written mention of the prospect is found in the Geological Survey of Canada, Memoir No. 243, issued in 1947 by Dr. H.M.A. Rice. In 1954 the area was staked by a prospector, Bob Bechtel, who interested Bern Brynelsen of Noranda Exploration in examining the claims. A joint Noranda - Kennecott program resulted but since the grades were so low the property was not taken up until in 1964 a re-examination by Chapman, Wood and Griswold produced recommendations leading to the construction of the Brenda Mine as it is today.The rounded, timber covered mountains of the area are composed of the tuffs, argillites and limestones of the Upper Triassic Nicola Group, which is intruded by a Jurassic quartz diorite, called the Brenda stock0 The actual orebody occurs in a strongly fractured zone within the Brenda stock, approximately 1500 feet from the contact with the Nicola group0 The ore minerals, .chalcopyrite and molybdenite, associated with pyrite and magnetite of lesser importance, occur as fillings within the fractures 0 The grade of the ore decreases outwards from a central higher grade core and in January 1971 total reserves were estimated at 165 million tons assaying 0,182% Copper and 0,049% Mo."

Reduced access to knowledgeable workers is creating challenges for operations. We are doing more 4D Operations - dirty, dull, dangerous, and distant. Personnel costs in these environments are high, and it is not always possible to get the people where you need them. Integrated Operations is a strategy to integrate people, process, and technology for faster and better decision making. Adopting an integrated operations approach can help to relocate personnel, improve collaboration, and align objectives to deliver reduced costs and improved performance. In this paper, the authors will highlight the required infrastructure to enable an Integrated Operations platform. Key decision points for enabling this technology for both Greenfield projects and existing mines will be discussed. Furthermore, the benefits and improved return on investment that result from deployment of an Integrated Operations strategy will be presented.

RÉSUMÉ La restauration du site minier Poirier, à Joutel s?est déroulée entre 1998 et 2001. Le principal élément des travaux a été la restauration du parc à résidus et des zones d?épanchement qui totalisaient 4,5 millions tonnes de résidus répartis sur une superficie de 74 hectares. Les résidus sont fortement générateurs de drainage minier acide. La première partie de la présentation consiste en un bref rappel du concept de restauration suivi d?une description des principaux éléments de travaux avec l?emphase sur les leçons apprises de l?exécution des travaux. La deuxième partie de la présentation est axée sur les résultats du programme de suivi en cours depuis la fin des travaux en 2001. Les éléments de suivi se rapportent à la baisse du niveau de la nappe phréatique à l?intérieur de la cellule, au tassement des résidus dans la cellule, aux mesures de température et d?oxygène à l?intérieur de la cellule et finalement à l?amélioration dans la qualité de l?eau de surface. ABSTRACT The reclamation of Poirier Mine, in Joutel, was carried out between 1998 and 2001. The main component of the works has been the reclamation of the tailings basin and tailings spill area which contained a total of 4,5 million tonnes of tailings and occupied some 74 hectares of ground surface. The mine tailings are highly acid-generating. The first part of the presentation will deal with a brief review of the reclamation plan followed by a short description of the main work components laying emphasis on experience gained during construction. The second part of the presentation will deal with the results obtained from the environmental monitoring program still in progress since the end of reclamation work in 2001. The aspects discussed include the drawdown of pore water inside the covered tailing pile, the settlement of mine waste material, the monitoring of moisture, temperature and oxygen underneath the liner and finally, the reduction of loadings in surface water.

The Porcupine Joint Venture operates the Dome Mine in South Porcupine, Ontario. Dome underground began production in 1910. It is the longest continuous operating gold mine in Canada, producing in excess of 15 M ounces. More than 900 underground stopes have been mined and hundreds of miles of drifts, sublevels and raises developed. Underground mining methods included shrinkage, cut and fill and longhole. Not all stopes were backfilled upon completion, particularly the longhole stopes. The Dome open pit was designed above the underground mine workings such that, as the pit is excavated, it intersects underground drifts and stopes. Potential operational problems associated with the interactions between the stopes and the pit walls may occur, necessitating pit wall redesign, ground support installation and operational rescheduling. Each intersection of the pit with the underground mine workings is closely evaluated to maintain a safe working environment and wall stability. This paper discussed how risks to pit wall stability are assessed, mitigated and monitored.

In open stope mining borehole deviation is one of the main factors affecting the blasting results. Though previous research has identified some actual deviation patterns, these studies are unable to relate the hole deviation pattern with the blasting results and therefore it is not possible to modify the design or take remedial measures based on the prediction of the blasting results. An alternative to the conventional method for borehole surveying is the in-hole probing techniques. With their inherent errors, it is important to evaluate these surveying systems under conditions of different mine sites. The lack of available assessment methods has limited the application of these techniques. In this paper some of the characteristics of the actual hole deviation pattern are discussed based on data from surveying production holes in six stopes. A method of predicting the blasting results is proposed by considering the borehole deviation pattern. Based on the prediction stope design can be modified or further surveying is carried out to improve the blasting results. The tolerable error is introduced to relate the surveying error with the drilling pattern and therefore it is possible to assess various in-hole-surveying techniques.

"The demand for minerals and metals is increasing. Head grades of ore bodies are dropping. Remaining ores are becoming finer grained, more complex, and more logistically challenging. Mineral processing – in particular comminution – already consumes a huge amount of energy. But in 20 years’ time, it will require about six times as much energy as today to meet the world’s mineral demand.Unless we do something different.As minerals professionals, it is our job to find that “something different”. The world is relying on us. Of course, we must look for new breakthrough technologies and techniques. We must find them, and we will find them – most likely in surprising areas.But what if we also already know how to make 30-50% improvements to efficiency? Just by using existing technologies, by applying modern analytical techniques, by custom designing our plants, by applying manufacturing principles, by breaking down our management silos between disciplines.The thing is, industry professionals already know this. Yet – in spite of a lot of intelligent people trying very hard – we just can’t seem to make it happen.This discussion considers why, despite our best efforts, we don’t get the best out of what we already have. Why we are wasting energy and money. Once we understand why, we can set about unlocking that value and improving industry productivity and energy efficiency. We will discuss the role that professionals and volunteer professional organisations like CMP and CEEC can play in catalysing the changes."

"The application of hydroxamic acid as flotation collectors is fast becoming of significant interest for the selective flotation of oxide minerals along with upgrading oxidised based metal ores and minerals. In the hydroxamate molecule, both O and N atoms in the -CONHOH group are identified as coordination atoms in many complexes and their characteristic structure determines the strength of the chelation complex between the hydroxamate and metal ion. The chelating performance of hydroxamates with transition metals including Cu, Ni, Zn, Fe, Cr, Mn and Co, the alkaline-earth metals (Be, Ca) and heavy metal (Pb) has been studied. Cytec has developed and patented a range of alkyl hydroxamates as flotation collectors for oxidised base metal sulphides, metal oxide minerals and precious metals. This paper introduces two new structures of hydroxamate collectors (Cyclohexyl and 4-tert-butylbenzoyl hydroxamates) and evaluates their characteristics relative to alkyl and benzoyl hydroxamates. Laboratory small-scale flotation tests were conducted with ilmenite and wolframite. The use of 4-tert-butyl benzoyl hydroxamate resulted in a best flotation performance for ilmenite. A relatively low cyclohexyl hydroxamate dosage was required in the flotation of wolframite to obtain comparable results to the alkyl and benzoyl hydroxamates. It is also shown a significantly improved flotation performance with 4-tertbutyl benzoyl hydroxamate in the flotation of ilmenite plant ore in comparison to the oleic acid or fatty acid collectors typically used for ilmenite flotation.INTRODUCTIONHydroxamic acid has been reported as an effective collector in small-scale flotation tests for a wide variety of oxide minerals and ores including copper (Lee et al., 1998, Lee et al., 2009), iron (Quast, 2000), tin (Sreenivas and Padmanabhan, 2002; Wu and Zhu, 2006), tungsten (Marinakis and Kelsall, 1987; Xia et al.,2004), and rare earth metal minerals (Ren et al., 1997; Pradip and Fuerstenau, 1991; Assis et al., 1996; Pavez et al., 1996; Zheng et al., 1996; Chen et al.,2005).As part of our previous research project, a selected suite of hydroxamic acid collectors including fatty, aromatic and modified hydroxamates (naphthoyl, cyclohexyl, benzoyl, octyl, 4-tert-butyl benzoyl, salicylic hydroxamates) were tested in order to examine their potential for recovery and selectivity of rare earth minerals. In these tests it was shown that the flotation performance with the hydroxamate collectors was significantly better than the phosphoric acid collectors on no slimes removed samples (Brian, et al., 2014; Liuyin, et al., 2014 and unpublished internal technical reports). Furthermore the tests revealed that for most of the hydroxamate reagents tested, their dosage requirements to achieve recoveries at the same levels was less than that for the phosphoric acid collectors. Recovery of both La and Ce was significantly better for the salicylic hydroxamate and that Nb, Y and Zr recovery were favoured by the octyl and benzoyl hydroxamates (Brian, et al., 2014; Liuyin, et al., 2014). Comparison among the hydroxamate collectors showed that the flotation and recovery performance of cyclohexyl (CHH) and 4-tert-butyl benzoyl (TBH) was not as good as the other hydroxamates for rare earth recovery."

"Grinding circuits are operated in the presence of disturbances due to ore changes and equipment malfunctions. One of the challenges faced by the operators is the detection of a disturbance, the identification of its origin and of the action needed to minimize its impact on the process. Hydrocyclones overloading, worn or partly plugged apexes of the units of a nest, surging and internal liner detachment may cause a loss of classification capacity and quality. Recovery losses in downstream leaching or flotation circuits justify the effort in developing techniques for the detection of hydrocyclone malfunction. Two approaches for the detection of hydrocyclone fault are presented in this paper. The first proposed method uses the conventional sensors available in a grinding circuit allowing real time detection of hydrocyclone abnormal operation. The second technique is based on the use of vibration sensors installed on the hydrocyclone of a nest. This last technique enables the classification of the hydrocyclone malfunction as surging, overloading and plugged apex. The two techniques can be combined to increase the robustness of the problem detection.INTRODUCTIONHydrocyclones are used for many purposes ranging from water separation, fines removal and obviously for the preparation of the feed for subsequent concentration circuits in a mineral processing plant. The strategic role of the hydrocyclones for the preparation of the feed to the concentration circuit is often underestimated because of their simplicity of operation and robustness (Napier-Munn et al., 1996; McIvor, 1988). It remains that despite their simplicity, hydrocyclones have been studied extensively from 1970 to 1990 with the objective of developing mathematical models of their operation to be incorporated into grinding circuit simulators (Napier-Munn et al., 1996; Lynch, 1977; Flintoff et al., 1987). Such a development effort is already an acknowledgement of the importance of these units in a mineral processing plant. Several authors (Del Villar et al., 1996; Plitt and Kawatra, 1979; Casali et al., 1998) proposed soft sensors to estimate the classification efficiency of hydrocyclones using sensor measurements. However, few of the proposed sensors are used in the industry. More recently several papers were published to discuss the application of 3-D modelling of the hydrocyclones (Narasimha et al., 2005; Cullivan et al., 2004) and sensors (Bond et al., 1999; Neesse et al., 2003; Hou et al., 1998; Olson and Waterman, 2004; Williams et al., 1995; Willams et al., 1997) to help in the detection of hydrocyclone malfunction."

Because segments of the Canadian mineral-based economy are dependent totally or in part on foreign sources of certain minerals, their well-being may well be affected by inability to obtain these minerals. Where such dependency exists, it is therefore important that contingency plans be available to counteract possible price increases or lack of supplies by means of technology, developed well in advance of any pending crisis . Canada is vulnerable to possible future real or artificial shortages of certain foreign-produced mineral commodities, and science and technology can provide information for the development of policies for counteracting efforts by foreign exporters to control prices or limit supplies.

"Online elemental analysis is the basis of optimal flotation control in mineral concentrator plants. Traditionally XRF analyzers have been used as the online analysis method. However, online XRF analyzers struggle to measure elements below calcium in atomic number (Z=20). For many processes lighter element assays would be beneficial to improve control of grade and recovery. Processes where elements below Ca are required include P, Mg and Si in phosphate concentrators, Si, Mg and Al in iron concentrators, and S and C in gold concentrators. Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) based elemental analysis can readily be applied to these processes. LIBS is based on generating plasma in the slurry sample by a high energy laser and analysis of the plasma by optical emission spectroscopy. Capabilities of a new Courier® 8 analyzer based in LIBS technology are demonstrated for elemental analysis starting from lithium (Z=3). Results of a plant installation in a sulfide gold concentrator provide a good agreement with the analyzer and laboratory assays.IntroductionEffective process control can be regarded as one of the fastest paying investments for a mineral processing plant. Process optimization in flotation circuits requires constant feedback of the process state. If only manual laboratory samples are available, this optimization becomes difficult due to the long delay between taking the sample and acquiring the laboratory result. If the element grades are available in online basis, the operator or automatic process control system can make corrective actions in real time.Online X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzers have been in use at concentrators for decades. The XRF analyzers can provide a fast, accurate and precise analysis from slurry streams. However, the drawback of XRF analyzers is their lack of capability to measure elements below Ca (Z=20) in atomic number. The low energy X-rays of the low atomic number elements get absorbed by water in the sample, protective window of the analyzer, or air between the sample and spectrometer."

The conventional low temperature process for extracting' helium from natural gas involves liquefying the whole gas stream in order to remove the relatively small fraction of helium. A process based on the selective diffusion of helium through a semi-permeable barrier is, in principle, more economical and flexible, particularly for the treatment of small re-serves and low concentrations. The well-known permeability of glass to helium offers the possibility of such a diffusion process and McAfee of the Bell telephone Laboratories showed in 1958 that practical separations could be achieved by passing natural gas over bundles of fine capillary glass tubing. Developmental studies have been carried out involving larger units and more extended field tests than those of McAfee. Fine capillary tubing of Pyrex glass 0.0035 in. diameter was prepared by drawing ordinary 6 mm. laboratory tubing in a furnace. "This paper discusses energy use and conservation in the primary copper industry and illustrates eco-efficiency considerations, using select examples of practices at ASARCO LLC, an integrated primary copper producer and others in the industry that promote eco-efficiency. The World Council for Sustainable Business Development first publicized the concept of eco-efficiency at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. Eco-efficiency is a management concept linking environmental and economic performance and is aimed at generating added value for a business through, among other things, increased resource and energy conservation and reduced environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of the product or service. This concept differs from sustainable development in that focus is only on economic and environmental factors and does not include social considerations. In the metal mining and processing context, this added value can be realized by implementing practices that promote conservation of water and mineral resources, conservation of energy, minimization of waste, reduced emissions and effluents and increased recycling. The examples from the primary copper industry used to illustrate eco-efficiency considerations include: water and energy conservation in mineral processing, adoption of flash and bath smelting processes, emission reduction and process improvement associated with fire-refining, implementation of green chemistry in electrorefining, promoting product stewardship initiatives and fostering renewable energy project on disturbed mined lands.INTRODUCTION ASARCO LLC (Asarco) was organized in 1899 as the American Smelting And Refining Company. Originally a consolidation of several lead-silver smelting companies, it evolved over the years into an integrated producer of primary non-ferrous metals, including copper, lead and zinc and associated co-products. Grupo México, S.A.B. de C.V acquired Asarco in 1999. Today, Asarco is a vertically integrated producer of primary refined copper and associated co-products such as gold, silver, molybdenum, selenium and tellurium. Asarco operates three open-pit mines and mills, two leach, solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) plants and a copper smelter in Arizona and a copper refinery in Texas."

"Mineral separation by exploiting the differences in mineral or metal specific gravities (sg) has been used since antiquity. In the modern era, this is most commonly seen in the recovery of gold by the use of centrifugal concentrators and the separation of coal (low sg) from waste rock (high sg) using heavy media cyclones and jigs. Other metals, notably oxides of tin and tungsten, are successfully recovered using some combination of jigs, spirals and shaking tables. However, many conventional gravity separation systems are limited to fairly coarse (>1 mm) to medium (>100 micron) particle separations due to the limitations of the gravitational separation forces in conventional equipment.Many of the high specific gravity minerals of interest are friable (e.g. cassiterite, wolframite, etc.) and excessive fines are generated in the grinding/comminution circuits which cannot be recovered with conventional equipment and may be lost directly to the tailings stream. Recent developments in centrifugal gravity separation equipment specifically designed for fine or ultra-fine particle separation and recovery have resulted in heavy mineral particle recoveries as fine as 10-20 microns. Ongoing research work has also identified the benefit of closed-circuit, multi-stage gravity recovery circuits using some combination of centrifugal concentrators and conventional equipment (tables, spirals, flotation, etc.) which can substantially increase overall plant recovery and final concentrate grade.This paper will provide details of the evolution of non-fluidized bed gravity concentrators for high sg mineral recoveries, correlate laboratory scale development work with plant results to confirm scale-up, and show how recent flowsheet developments have contributed to significantly improved plant performance.IntroductionGravity concentration is one of the oldest and most cost effective metal and/or mineral recovery systems, ranging from the classic hand panning of alluvial gold, through to the large scale production of a wide range of metals and minerals, including gold, silver, PGMs, black sands, coal and iron oxides. Conventional gravity recovery systems, comprised of some combination of sluices, spirals, jigs and shaking tables have limited application in fine particle (i.e. <100 microns) recovery, or where there are limited differences in particle specific gravities (sg), e.g. the separation of high sg, high value metal oxides (e.g. those of tin, tantalum or tungsten), from medium sg, lower value metal sulfides such as pyrite and pyrrhotite. These unit operations tend to have limited capacity, and while double and triple turn spirals and multi-deck tables have been developed, extensive floor space is often required in order to process the tonnages incorporated in the modern mineral processing plant."

Introduction We are all familiar with the bright and attractive colours of the roofs of our suburban houses and country cottages, but few of us fully appreciate the complex and highly technical nature of the business which produces these roofings. Roofing granules consist of small broken particles of certain types of rocks, burned clay products, or slag. They are used either in their natural state or artificially coloured and are affixed onto one surface of asphalt sheeting. Their main functions are to protect the roof against external fire hazard, prolong its life, and enable it to withstand extremes of weather over a period of years without deteriorating. Pleasing designs and colours are added attractions. The reverse, or inner side, of the sheeting is coated with a film of talc or fine mica to prevent it sticking when rolled up for convenience of handling for transport. The finished sheets or strips are cut into a variety of shapes for roofing shingles, or for sidings which resemble rows of bricks separated by mortar. In Canada, the consumption of roofing granules has increased fourfold in the past decade and indications are that the industry will continue to expand. At present, fourteen plants are engaged in manufacturing granule-coated roofings, but, apart from a relatively small output of natural granules by two producers in British Columbia, only one eastern producer makes both natural and coloured granules in Canada, and these only for its own use. The annual consumption is now over 77,000 tons of roofing granules valued at more than $1,600,000, but about 62 per cent of the tonnage is imported. It is thus apparent that the production of Canadian-made granules, both natural and coloured, could be considerably increased. This paper is presented in order to give an outline of the industry and at the same time to point out its difficulties and pitfalls.

"IntroductionThe mining industry has made slow but steady progress toward the automation of mineral processing plants over the last 35 years. The stimulus to automate is associated with important economic and hidden benefits, so that today, the latest in instrumentation and technology is being employed.This chapter assesses the status of instrumentation justified economically, defines levels of control and certain fundamentals of feedback control loops, describes typical sensors employed in concentrator circuits, summarizes control strategies employed therein, and briefly highlights trends in integrated plant control.Current Status of AutomationAs early as 1948, the mining industry began to show interest in automation, probably because of its close association with the petroleum industry. By 1958, some regulatory control had been achieved in various sections of a concentrator, particularly in crushing circuits. Successes were attributed primarily to the reliability of sensors employed in the corresponding control scheme. By 1961, computers had appeared on the scene, initially, for data logging purposes.From 1958 to 1965, very few new control strategies had been implemented. Guidelines in vogue at this time appeared to be:- Install proven automation, unless a good instrumentation department exists at the concentrator.- Do not bite off too much instrumentation at one time.- Do not purchase on price alone; instrumentation must function in the concentrator environment.- Do not purchase automatic control equipment to be fashionable.Such guidelines were employed1 because of a lack of: (a) quantitative process knowledge, (b) reliable primary sensors, (c) initiative to try something new, (d) trained personnel, and (e) understanding that older concentrators could justify automation in many situations."

Copper feed materials processing is becoming more challenging, due to an incremental increase in the mineralogical and compositional complexity of these feeds. These complex and polymetallic feeds are now becoming more common and many sites have been forced to re-evaluate their operating strategies to process these materials at cost competitive rates, whilst meeting ever more stringent environmental regulations. Most operations must first evaluate the merits of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical treatment routes. Although there are multiple copper smelting technologies available, only top-submerged lance (TSL) technology, supplied by Glencore Technology as ISASMELT™, has been applied in the real world to consistently and successfully smelt complex materials in integrated metallurgical facilities such as Glencore’s Kazzinc Ltd. operation in Kazakhstan, Umicore Precious Metals Refining in Belgium and Aurubis AG in Germany. Glencore Technology also offers hydrometallurgical processing, through the Albion Process™ technology, opening up viable flowsheet options previously not possible for these complex feeds. This paper describes a number of real world process flowsheets at global operations and Glencore’s own operations at Mount Isa and Kazzinc Ltd., which process complex feeds. These flowsheets integrate the ISASMELT™, Albion Process™, ISACONVERT™, ISAKIDD™ Tank house, and bottom blown oxygen cupel (BBOC™) technologies to provide an effective process solution for the treatment of complex polymetallic feeds to produce metallic copper and associated by-products. INTRODUCTION Traditional smelters and those built in recent times within the bulk smelting hubs of the world have been designed to treat standard/clean concentrates. In recent years the processing of complex polymetallic sulfide concentrates and the recycling of secondary copper and derivatives of waste electrical and electronic equipment, such as e-scrap, have become a focus for numerous companies (Alvear & Nikolic, 2013). Processing of these complex feeds, characterized by relatively high levels of minor elements (over 5% of elements such as arsenic, antimony, bismuth, lead and zinc) is more challenging. Facilities not designed for these types of materials may require significant modifications or a change in smelting technology to treat them. "Although CO2 content indicates the quantity of carbonate in altered basaltic rocks, it does not measure the intensity of carbonate alteration. CO/CaO molar ratios, which correlate with the relative proportions of individual carbonate species, measure the intensity of carbonatization. The Timmins gold area is characterized by pervasive carbonatization, with large parts of the area having CO2/Ca0 ratios greater than 1, representing C02 supersaturation relative to CaO. The mean CO/CaO in the Timmins area is0.67, compared to 0.13 in two unmineralized control areas. Regional arsenic abundance in the gold-bearing area averages 4 ppm, compared to about 0.35 ppm for the non-mineralized areas. The average K20 and Rb abundances are similar in both mineralized and non-mineralized areas (about 0.30% K20 and 7 ppm Rb). Although there appears to have been no wholesale addition of K20 or Rb to the mineralized area from external sources, these alkalies have been redistributed internally, resulting in patterns of local enrichments and depletions which are characteristic of the mineralized region.Local target anomalies associated with known mineralization consist of CO2/Ca0 > 1.5, As > 10 ppm and K2O > 0. 75%. Not all three values are required to be above these thresholds in order to identify local targets. Combinations such as C02/ Ca0 > 1.5 and As < 10 ppm, CO/CaO 1-1.5 and K20 > 0. 75 or K20 > 0. 75 and As > 10 ppm are equally indicative of proximity to gold occurrences. Gold-bearing veins and associated anomalies occur throughout the entire volcanic succession and are not restricted to any particular stratigraphic horizons. The levels and patterns of alteration and occurrences of gold appear to be structurally controlled."

"Historically, performance at Vale’s Clarabelle Mill was measured by Mill throughput and Mill recovery. After the economic collapse in 2008, a series of reviews were performed to drive improvements in business efficiency. These identified that product quality (e.g., concentrate grade, variability in concentrate grade) had a profound impact on downstream processes and suggested that improved control of these parameters would generate the greatest value for the customer (the Copper Cliff Smelter) and the company (Vale). Consequently, a movement was initiated to transform the Mill operating philosophy to consider customer needs as paramount. Systems and strategies used to drive the transformation are described. In 2011, an unexpected furnace failure resulted in decreased capacity at the Copper Cliff Smelter. In response, a two-stage change in production strategy was developed at Clarabelle. The first stage was to modify the ore blend feeding Clarabelle so that the concentrate grade could be significantly increased with minimal impact on recovery. The second stage was a circuit modification to ensure the elevated concentrate grade could be sustained. Execution of the first stage was complete five days after the failure and the second stage was complete within 10 weeks. Steps involved in each stage are outlined and the overall benefits are presented.INTRODUCTION Clarabelle Mill is located in Copper Cliff, Ontario, Canada (approximately 350 km north of Toronto). The Mill treats copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) sulphide ores. The primary diluents are pyrrhotite (Po) and non sulphide gangue rock (Rk). The process description of the circuits at Clarabelle is documented in the paper by Taylor, Doucet, Blanchette, Barrette & Lawson (2012) in this Proceedings and will not be repeated. The Mill treats ore containing Cu, Ni and platinum group elements (PGE’s) and produces two concentrates; a Cu concentrate and a bulk Cu/ Ni Concentrate (referred to as nickel concentrate). The Cu concentrate is sold to market while the Ni concentrate is thickened at the Mill and pumped to Vale’s smelter complex in Copper Cliff Ontario for further processing. Since commissioning in 1971, Clarabelle Mill has undergone many circuit changes to suit the changing needs and wants of our customers, both internal and external. The Mill processes ores of varying quality, based on mineralogy and size and until 2009 the Mill daily performance was primarily based on throughput. The second key performance indicator (KPI) of “good” or “bad” performance was quality of the concentrate and third; Mill metal recoveries. There were other plant level KPIs such as flotation feed grind size, slurry densities and mass flows to the separation circuit, but for the most part each day was good or bad depending on how many tons were processed through the Mill."
