The uptake of nickel into the lattice of pyrrhotite, Fe1 _1J S was studied experimentally in the temperature range 200°C to 760°C. Nickel from both aqueous solutions and salt melts diffuses rapidly into the sulphidelattice with an accompanying release of iron into the solution or melt. The rate of uptake of nickel and its diffusion into the sulphide lattice were followed by optical microscopy and by analysis with an electron probe microanalyser. Some geological consequences of this phenomenon affecting the distribution of nickel in rocks associated with nickel-iron sulphide ores are discussed.

The iron ore industry has reached the end of an unprecedented period of expansion triggered by China’s demand for iron ore. Lower ore prices have led producers to focus on optimising mining operations while extracting the maximum tonnage from the infrastructure presently in place or from projects already underway. A rising global surplus is expected to further force ore prices down and lead to output curtailments, which in turn will help to restore market balance. However, investment in the development of new resources and the development of new infrastructure will inevitably become necessary. Making the right decisions in relation to future processing infrastructure in a climate of uncertain demand and price volatility will not be as straightforward as in the past, where expanding the scale of a proposed operation has been the answer to ensuring economic viability. Overall cost and environmental pressures particularly in relation to wet processing will dominate the decision-making process. IMP Technologies (IMPTEC) has anticipated the need for a dry low cost processing alternative, which can open the way for the development of lower grade magnetite deposits and ensure the sustainability of processing in Australia. The lower grade magnetite deposits are generally fine grained and require grinding to p80 of 30 to 40 microns. Historically, the cost of grinding to these sizes has been and remains a key factor determining the economic viability of a magnetite processing operation. The IMPTEC Super-fine Crusher and Cyclomag Separator are the key components of a proposed radically simplified dry processing alternative, which addresses both cost and environmental issues. Rheological Behaviour of Clay-Rich Gangue Mineral Dispersions During Hydrometallurgical Treatment Alumino-silicate minerals invariable may present an intractable challenge in hydrometallurgical operations employed in low grade nickel, copper and gold ore leaching or high level nuclear waste (HLNW) processing. The interactions and reactivity of alumino-silicate clay gangue minerals such as muscovite/sericite, chlorite, kaolinite and smectite under acidic (eg pH <3) or alkaline (pH >13) conditions can have a striking impact on the particle interactions. These may manifest in undesirable pulp rheology, poor extraction rates and challenges in the subsequent "handleability" and solid-liquid separation processes (eg dewatering). In the present work, a review of investigations involving the interfacial chemistry, interactions and rheological behaviour of aqueous dispersions of mica-group, layered alumino-silicate clay (muscovite / sericite) and chalcocite minerals as a function of pH in the range 2 - 9 and time at 25¦C, is presented. Particle zeta potential, reflecting interfacial chemistry, indicated a strong pH-history and particle volume fraction dependency. Pristine particles' zeta potentials measured from high to low pH indicated mineral-specific isoelectric point (iep) at pH range 2 - 5. Subsequent measurements from low to high pH showed pH-history dependency with iep shift to higher pH values, the extent of which also depended upon particle volume fraction and aging time. Pulp pH-mediated particle interactions revealed by shear yield stress analysis displayed a bifurcation behaviour and good compliance with DLVO theory. The maximum pulp yield values occurred at the iep whilst weak rheology was observed where the magnitude of the particle zeta potential was greatest. The pivotal role played by both pulp chemistry and suspension conditions in regulating the particle interactions and concomitant rheological behaviour is highlighted. The implications of the findings with regards to clay-base pulps' handleability and its control during aqueous processing are discussed.

The sulphides can be arranged in a series determined by the relative amounts of ionic and covalent bonding present. This series is similar to the paragenetic series common to most sulphide ore deposits. Investigation of the surface tensions of the corresponding heavy metal iodides by the maximum bubble pressure method throws some light upon this relationship. It is shown that the surface tension of molten iodides decreases as the chemical bonding within them becomes more covalent. These results are interpreted in terms of the constitution of the melts, and are extended to cover the case of sulphides in solution in a silicate melt. It is concluded that sulphides tend to lower the surface tension of silicate melts and that this tendency becomes greater as the bonding within the dissolved sulphide groups becomes more covalent. A possible relationship between this conclusion and the origin of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits is indicated.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the order of deposition, or paragenesis of sulphide minerals is remarkably similar in hypogene ore deposits throughout the world. This widespread similarity points towards the operation of some fundamental process which must be intimately connected with -the genesis of these ores. A correct interpretation and understanding of the causes of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits would shed much light on the origin of these deposits.In Table 1 a simplified paragenetic series for sulphide minerals is presented. A pilot steel ladle injection facility designed to assist in the production of high quality steels suitable for use in pipelines has been built and commissioned at the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (BOS) plant at Port Kembla Works.The plant design and the injection procedure are described.The performance of the unit and some metallurgical results are discussed in terms of the addition to the steel ladle of various quantities of calcium silicide and a lime based material. The effects of these additions on sulphur content and inclusion morphology and hence on steel ductility are also presented. The influence of ladle lining on desulphurisation is illustrated.On the basis of the experience gathered in the pilot plant a permanent and more sophisticated injection facility has been designed.

Recent lignite investigations indicate their potential as a strategic long-term fuel resource. This potential however would be determined not only by lignite quantity and quality, but also by economic, physical and social resources required to support it. The following discussion uses the example of a typical lignite mining operation to review the major resource requirements. While recognising that the implications of supplying those resources may be as important as their actual existence, this paper has purposely omitted such discussion as this will be one of the main target areas for the next phase of investigations.

Factors leading to the necessity for some individual testwork in solving most specific hydraulic transportation problems are listed and a description is given of a method used in determining critical flow conditions. An outline is given of the basic theory of the purpose of the testwork, and a means of applying test results for varied pipeline diamet.er and material conditions follows. Engineering and economic factors are applied to the solution of a specific hydraulic transportation problem and the use of the test results in plant practice is illustrated. The advantages of connecting pumps in series in centralised pumping stations rather than individually along the pipeline are stressed. Mining is taking place at increasing depths of cover on the Southern Coalfield beneath predominantly massive sandstone strata. Within the next twenty years, there will be longwall mining at depths greater than 600 m. As the Sydney Metropolitan area continues to expand and as coal mining approaches these urban areas subsidence will continue to become an increasinglY important aspect of coal mining research. Investigations, commenced in the mid 1960's, allow prediction of subsidence in the Southern Coalheld with reasonable confidence. The work is showing that the characteristics of thc subsidence troughs over the deeper mining at Appin differ from the characteristics of mine subsidence at less cover.The longwall mining at Appin Colliery has resulted in a maximum measured subsidenee of 730 mm. The maximum strains were small because of the large radii of curvature of the subsidence profiles. There was no damage to any of the buildings in the township of Appin.

Results are reported of a study of the reactions occurringin the combustion of chaIcopyrite particles underconditions simulating those in the shaft of a flashsmelter.The reactions were studied using kinetic and mineralogicaltechniques. Reactions. rates above 500°C wererapid, most of the reaction taking place in less than 50ms. Final products were copper-iron ferrites with spineltype structures. Probable reaction mechanisms are discussed.

The purpose of a mineral comminution circuit with a ball mill running in closed-loop with a hydrocyclone classification cluster is to feed the downstream process with the target particle size. Maintaining the optimal particle size in the flotation feed can significantly improve plant cash flow. In particular, reducing the amount of coarse material is often a major challenge. Existing instrumentation to provide particle size measurement is considered standard equipment in most modern concentrator plants. However, availability is often very low, mainly owing to high maintenance requirements of the analyser and associated sampling system.CiDRA Minerals Processing has developed two novel and robust technologies that address this challenge by providing high reliability and very low maintenance systems for on-line measurement of coarse material in the overflow of individual hydrocyclones. The first system is non-invasive and measures pebbles and rocks greater than 6 mm. This paper focuses on the second system, which is a ruggedized wetted sensor design with no moving parts and provides a real-time trend of the desired target grind size parameter, such as percentage above 150 micron.Both systems have simple robust designs and measure in the primary overflow stream of the individual hydrocyclone. Individual hydrocyclone measurement enables identification of poor performing hydrocyclones in addition to providing a representative measurement of the whole hydrocyclone cluster. The systems do not require sampling and associated sample transfer piping circuits that are prone to plugging, thus avoiding high maintenance requirements.The wetted sensor will be described in detail along with its implementation in a robust control scheme in a major copper concentrator in North America. Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of Best Practice Principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned.The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95 per cent passing 2 mm and the design allowed for a single cutter primary Vezin sampler, increments taken from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals, whilst filling a tanker for the pneumatic offload at our base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from our smelting complex and the input to our refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ‘interleaved’ fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks.The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum is the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs and stock levels for all our operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February every year, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). A trend was developing in the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter (sender) showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock and the base metal refinery (receiver) showed that their theoretical stock increased against their physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results, that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream.This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the respective sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were analysed again, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period.From these investigations, it was found that airflows present inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias and a change in sampling protocol was introduced as well as physical changes to the sampling equipment were made to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period which followed, after a phased upgrading process, showed that the accounting between our smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below five per cent relative to theoretical stock).CITATION:Kruger, C J and le Roux, E, 2017. The development of a process for removal of iron oxides from ilmenite is outlined whereby the Ti02 content of Western Australian ilmenites can be upgraded from 55 to approximately 90 per cent. In the first stage, the iron oxides are reduced with solid carbon (coal) to metallic iron. Experimental reductions were carried out in crucibles, a fluidized bed, and a small pilot plant rotary kiln. The reduced ilmenite was then agitated in aerated water, in the presenceof catalysts, so that the iron "rusted" away from the ilmenite grains and the precipitated iron oxide was easily separable by decantation.The influence of variables on the rates of reduction and oxidation are discussed. The oxidation rate was examined for both the physical oxygen transfer characteristics and electrochemically by reference to Pourbaix diagrams, in which redox potential is plotted against solution pH.The upgraded ilmenite is expected to be an attractive material for pigment manufacture, and the iron oxide has prospects of being a marketable by-product. The process may possibly be applied to other ores.INTRODUCTIONThere are extensive deposits of ilmenitic beach sands, Le. iron titanium oxides of the general formula FeTi03, 'occurring in the lower south-west portion of Western Australia, and although there has been considerable commercial development, local producers face keen competition on a freight-cost basis. Thus the removal of the unwanted iron oxide constituent would have the double advantage of reducing the freight differential and presenting a more attractivematerial to pigment manufacturers.

The involvement of concerned parties in all aspects of the Lihir Project from an early stage has promoted good relations between all groups. Activities involving landowners, the Lihir community, the New Ireland Provincial Government (NIPG) and the prospective developer include the Lihir Liaison Committee, Lihir Working Group, Environmental Planning Committee, Provincial Mining Task Force and the Lihir Mining Area Landowners Association (LMALA). With modifications, the Lihir Liaison model may be of use in promoting good relationships among parties in other mineral developments.

Renison Bell is on the Emu Bay Railway, midway between Zeehan and Rosebery on the west coast of Tasmania. The tin deposits in this area have been described by G. A. WaIler (1902), L. K. Ward (1909), H. Hermani (1914), and Hartwell Conder (1918), for the Tasmanian Geological Survey. The ore-bodies occur in the slates, grits, altered lava flows and tufts of the Dundas Series, and consist of fine-grained cassiterite disseminated through massive sulphides (chiefly pyrrhotite or pyrite), or through bodies of quartz and sulphides. Some of these bodies show a N.W.-S.E. strike, parallel to the strike of the tin belt, but others strike N.E.-S;W. or E.-W.The ore-bodies are of two types: (1) steeply dipping fissure veins,' spoken of locally as "feeders," and (2) flatter-lying bodies more or less conformable with the bedding planes of the slates (bedded veins), spoken of locally as "floors."The feeders range from 5-12 ft. in width, with occasional bulges as great as 4q ft. Their lengths vary from 100 ft. to several hundred yards, and they are known to continue to Clmsiderable depths. 'They dip steeply, generally at angles of 45° to 60° to the east or south.The floors, where they occur, 'are directly connected with the feeders, and are sheet-iike bodies of sulphide ore. The composite ore-bodies thus have the shape of an inverted L, or a T, according to whether 'the floor extends out from one side or both sides of the feeder. Most of the floors extend from the hanging-wall side of the feeder. Where erosion has removed the connection, they appear as separate bodies.The feeders as a rule carry more quartz and arsenopyrite than the floors, and are richer in tin. In addition, the cassiterite tends to be coarser grained in the feeders than in the floors. The floors, on the other hand, carry a greater proportion of -sulphides, chiefly pyrrhotite, and the grade of ore and grain size of the cas,siterite tend to decrease as the floor is followed down the dip away from the feeder, so that the outer and lower extremities of the floors may be too low-grade to work economically. The average grade of the ore worked at present is 0·9,0/0 tin. The slates forming the roofs of the floors are commonly much contorted and silicified,' so that they form hard rocks in which the contortion and shattering of the original slates are well preserved. Joints extending upwards, more or less at right angles to the roof of the floor, are occasionally filled with finely crystalline quartz, similar to that in the orebodies, and are often rich in tin, so much so that the slate as a whole may average 0·4% tin.Some carbonate gangue is present in all of the ore-bodies, commonly on the footwall side, and, in places it becomes an important constituent...

Late Cretaceous Blue Spur Conglomerate preserved as isolated remnants at Gabriels Gully, Weatherstones, Forsyth, Waitahuna Gully and Adams Flat was deposited during the intiation and early stages of extensional movement on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. The deposits represent successive courses of a single fluvial system flowing across the Tuapeka Fault zone from the up-thrown (northeast) block. Each course, beginning with the channel at Gabriels Gully, was abandoned as a result of uplift-induced defeated antecedence in favour of a new course farther to the southeast around the southeast-propagating tip of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Schist and quartz in the conglomerate was derived ultimately from schistose rocks northeast of the Tuapeka Fault zone. Caples Terrane greywacke detritus in the middle and upper beds of the conglomerate was probably recycled from pre-existing sedimentary cover on the up-thrown block, following initiation of uplift on the Tuapeka Fault zone at each locality. Most of the gold is derived from vein sources in Otago Schist rocks to the north, and/or associated placers. Hydrothermal veins at Waipori, Hindon, Barewood, and Macraes are the most likely primary sources. There is no evidence to support previous interpretations of deposition by river systems flowing from the southwest, or axially along the Tuapeka Fault zone from northwest to southeast. High gold grades within Blue Spur Conglomerate should have a linear trend more or less similar to the orientation of the host channels, but are likely to drop off rapidly to the southwest. Extensions of the conglomerate-filled channels are unlikely to be preserved, but there is a strong probability that younger placers recycled from the former channels exist.

After a five year period representing the strongest resource and commodity rally ever experienced, we are now faced with a subdued recovery following the global financial crisis. This renewed economic growth will be steady but eventually attain levels that reignite export demand out of China and other emerging nations, which are now reliant on increasing domestic demand to support their economies. This backdrop of weaker share prices and less available investment capital creates a greater imperative for company management to ensure that its share price is fully valued. The mining geologist plays an important role in achieving this outcome through direct estimation of asset value (resources) but also in strongly communicating the æupsideÆ value opportunity in both mine site and adjacent brownfields exploration and an efficient and technically sound mining operation. The contribution of mining geologists to assist in conducting analyst site visits should not be underestimated, particularly with reduced analyst coverage of the resources sector and some simplification in company analysis through ranking companies on Reserve and Resource positions.

The achievement of high availability of the Grey River Gold Mining Limited's alluvial gold dredge is a tortuous task which will rely upon the dedication of all staff employed at Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML). The persistent adoption of new technology and better operating procedures, combined with a strong commitment to preventative and predictive maintenance, is necessary. The Grey River Gold Mining Limited alluvial gold dredge is operating in a relatively low grade alluvial gold deposit and hence relies on a high throughput of ore to be profitable. To achieve the required high material throughput the dredge incorporates an overburden removal system which operates simultaneously with a conventional bucketline system.   The overburden system incorporates a cutter wheel and suction pump configuration which is dedicated to removing the low grade (5 mg gold/m3 gravel) overburden. The bucketline conveys the richer grade payzone gravels (up to 890 mg/m3 gravel) to the recovery plant mounted onboard the dredge. The horizon for the overburden system approximates 15 m and the payzone terminates at the interface of the old man rock and the alluvial gravels at a variable depth averaging 22 m.   From a mechanical engineering perspective the dredge is a machine comprised of two materials handling systems which are controlled by Operations Staff and electronic process control systems.   The availability of such a materials handling system is a function of four variables: 1. The environment that the machine operates in. 2. The ability of the people operating the machine. 3. The design of the mechanisms, the configuration that they are grouped in and the effectiveness of the process control systems which control the mechanisms. 4. The procedures utilised to predict the performance of the machines and the skill of staff to analyse that data and carry out effective maintenance.
