The minerals Industry carries out over US$ 2 billion of R&D annually. The R&D is performed at three levels ? in house research facilities; on a one-on-one basis with a research provider; as syndicated (collaborative) research. The key to a successful R&D programme is project selection. It is suggested that at this time of ?bounty? for the minerals industry the research portfolio should contain some ?blue sky? but potentially long term significantly beneficial projects. This said, the projects should align the technical concepts with the business imperatives. AMIRA has found the ?Road Map? concept has assisted in defining areas for R&D. Examples of this methodology using a Copper Road Map developed by AMIRA for the copper producers operating in South America is presented. The benefits derived from syndicated research are also discussed.

Peng The highlights of this paper are : • The shield supports with lemniscate links will exert a tangential force on the roof strata, causing unnecessary and harmful roof movements, thus damaging the roof structure. The principal source of the tangential force is the horizontal movement of the point O, the pivotal joint between the canopy and the caving shield. When the support height is changed during setting, the point O will move along a curve upward and rearward toward the gob. As a result, it produces a vertical movement, causing the roof to move up a distance of ?d, and a horizontal movement toward the gob, creating vertical fractures in the roof. • The major purpose for employing the lemniscate-link system is to protect the hydraulic legs against the action of the bending moments induced by the tangential force that causes deformation or destruction of the legs. • Based on these two points, the author suggested that, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the lemniscate-link system and strengthen its advantageous features, a shield support with a new design of that mechanism has been developed. With the new design, the conventional rigid lemniscate links are replaced by hydraulic rams. When the pressure inside the rams reaches a certain level, the ram will yield.

Retaining walls for the construction of underground urban infrastructures have to be executed considering the impact of a deep foundation job-site within an urban network. Traditional excavation systems, based on the use of grabs and bentonite mud, involve serious problems such as: the opening of trenches adjacent to existing buildings; the cleaning of the working area; the site installation for the production and storage of the bentonite mud; the transport and disposal of soil contaminated with bentonite mud. Alternative solutions have therefore been developed in order to overcome these problems. For temporary works soil consolidation methods, combined with the use of sheet piles, have been implemented, by a combination of traditional mixing methods and jet grouting systems to speed up the operations, consequently reducing the construction time. For permanent works two new techniques named respectively CSP (Cased Secant Piles) and CDW (Continuous Diaphragm Walls) have been studied, applied and tested.

Normal practice in the mining industry is the creation of a single geological model. These models provide a single interpretation of the geological and mineralisation domains. These interpretations infer the exact behaviour of ore domain contacts at shorter scales when resource definition drilling is done on wider scales and are thus locally highly uncertain. The interpreted geological model provides a single number for the volume and tonnes of mineralised material enclosed by the mineralisation envelope. It is on this single number for volume and tonnage that capital intensive mine development decisions (mine design and scheduling, stockpile strategy, waste management, closure planning, dewatering strategy, product quality, etc) are based. Some of these decisions require knowledge of grade variability for small volumes of material such as quarterly production periods. It is generally recognised that this information cannot be derived from single kriged geological models, but can potentially be modelled by conditional simulation techniques. Uncertainty in the extent and continuity of the mineralised envelope and its effect on grade variability for shorter production periods is thus recognised as a major source of uncertainty in new mine development.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Boyle, C and Phillips, J, 2013. PT Kaltim Prima Coal?s 13.1 km overland conveyor (OLC) was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 trough belt type. Cost and performance optimization during initial design ended up with 5.4 mps belt speed, 1000 mm belt width to convey 1350tph, and 7 mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30 mtpa (million ton per annum). Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4 200 tph satisfactorily.

Your thoughts on the current status of the global minerals industries? The global economic, technological, social and political changes of the last two decades of the 20th century resulted in the emergence of a restructured minerals industry. This industry is now based on a new cost-cutting philosophy; utilization of modern technology; productivity gains rather than production tonnages; diversification of mineral markets; and globalization of exploration, mining and processing. Quantity and tons used to be the focus. The emphasis today is on remaining competitive in the marketplace by lowering per-unit production costs as much as possible. What factors and trends will impact the minerals industries in this, the 21st century? A number of parameters will impact minerals operations and shape the future sustainability and growth of the minerals industries. Increased demand for minerals will be accompanied by the demand for technical advancements. We will also see a continued emphasis on health and safety, environmental stewardship, and education and training. Let me elaborate.

Fine coal is defined as material with a maximum size of 1/2 in. Various methods for separate washing of such coal are discussed briefly because separate treatment can lead to a higher overall recovery of coal or to a product having a lower ash content.A felspar jig is discussed in detail because it is the method most recently adopted in Australia, and because it has the advantages of compactness, flexibility and automatic Gontrol, with minimum operator attention. This jig has a variety of adjustable controls to enable the desired results to be obtained from a wide range of coals and the general application of each control is discussed.The only separate treatment of fine coal in the Illawarra district is by felspar jigs on Bulli seam coal.INTRODUCTIONAll reasonably large Australian collieries now win coal by mechanical methods. but while mechanization leads to more economic production of high tonnages, it also changes the characteristics of the coal won. In particular there is an increased proportion of fines, and an increased ash and moisture content. However, specifications of coal for sale have become more stringent, and consumers now require coals in a definite size range with a lower and more uniform ash content, as well as with a low and uniform moisturecontent.These factors have led to the need to wash and grade run-of-mine coal at the pithead. In' plants where the whole of the run-of-mine coal is treated in a jig, some of the fine coal in the feed is beneficiated; the extent depending on factors such as the type of coal and the feed rate. However, for dense medium treatment, fine coal must first be screened out, and there may then be no washing of fine coal at all.

Precipitation of tin from Pb-Sn alloys (lead-rich) occurs by the nucleation and growth of hemispherical cells which consist of tin lomelloe interspersed in the depleted solid solution. Nucleation and growth of these cells and the tin interlamellar spacing at various compositions and temperatures have been investigated. The interlamellar spacing increases approximately as the reciprocal of the logarithm of the supersaturation ratio. For constant initial tin concentration the concentration of cell nuclei increases with decreasing temperature to a limiting temperature-independent value. The kinetic results support the view that the cell growth rote is governed by the diffusion of tin along the cell boundary. In the main, the results confirm the authors' earlier deductions, drawn from resistometric and calorimetric data, about the precipitation mechonism. IT has been shown1, 2 that tin (ß) precipitates from lead-rich (a) PbSn solutions by the nucleation and growth of cells (cellular or discontinuous precipitation). These cells consist of tin lamellae, with a spacing 1, interspersed in a depleted a solution. Reorientation of a also accompanies cell growth. The kinetics of cellular precipitation of tin from lead have been measured by resistometric2, 3 and ca1orimetric1, 3 techniques. The time-transformation isotherms (t equals time; x, volume fraction of specimen transformed) of the initial rapid precipitation, which drains about 60 pet of the tin from solution, have been described by a kinetic law having the form x = 1 —exp (—bt n) [I] where n usually has the value 3.0. It was shown" that this law and the other kinetic facts can be explained satisfactorily if it is assumed that the cells grow at a constant rate and that all the cells nucleate in a time negligible in comparison with the period of cell growth before impingement. Thus, for hemispherical cells b = (2/3)pNG3 [21 where G is the rate of cell growth in cm per sec, and N is the number of cell nuclei per unit volume. The rapid rate of cell growth at low temperatures can be accounted for"' if it is assumed that the dissolved tin drains to the lamellae edges by diffusion along the sweeping cell boundary rather than by diffusion through the a crystal (volume diffusion). For cell growth governed by cell boundary diffusion it was shown, approximately G=2(X° - X° / X° ) DBA / l2 where A equals the thickness of the cell boundary; D R, the coefficient of diffusion of tin atoms within the boundary; and X° and X, are the atom fractions of tin in the supersaturated and saturated solutions, respectively. The modern Golden Cross mine entered the production phase in January 1992. The project is designed to produce over 100 000 oz/yr of gold and over 300 000 oz/yr of silver during a mine life of eight years. An open pit and an underground mine are operated producing around 850 000 t/yr of ore, to feed a conventional carbon-in-leach processing plant. Golden Cross is owned in joint venture by Coeur Gold New Zealand Limited (80%) and Viking Mining Company Limited (20 %).   Since the start of production several major aspects of the design have altered. The underground mine began as a mechanised cut and fill operation. The cut and fill stoping progresses in 3.3 m flatback lifts with maximum stoping width of 6 m. Where the ore zone is wider than 6 m a post pillar cut and fill method is used. In 1993 a new bench mining plan was introduced between the 270 and 260 levels. Flatbacking continued in the footwall drives in anticipation of variability of the ore width and orientation. The development of levels below the main service 200 level has indicated a possibility of bulk mining the ore block rather than flatbacks. This could lower mining costs but also introduce higher dilution rates. Development is in the advanced stages for trialing this method.

In Australia and worldwide, open cut mining has become increasingly common over the last few decades through changes in excavation technology and ore economics. However, such operations frequently leave a legacy of open mine pits once mining ceases. Pit lakes will then form in mine pits that extend below the water table when dewatering operations cease. Pit lake waters are typically contaminated with metals, metalloids, saline or acidic/alkaline and rarely approach natural water body chemistry. Physically, pit lakes have unique bathymetries, are often strongly wind sheltered and have very small catchments. Nevertheless, pit lake waters often constitute a vast resource but of limited beneficial use (due to water quality issues); with a potential to contaminate regional surface and ground water resources. Water in pit lakes has the potential to be useful for a range of purposes in the Australian context of characteristic hot, dry climate and relatively few natural water bodies. Consequently, pit lakes can be seen to represent either a significant liability or a water resource to mining companies and regional communities. However, the lack of knowledge on pit lakes continues to hinder their proper management. This paper summarises the limited information currently available on water quality associated with Australian pit lakes. Information on pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quantity and quality is not nationally collated and requires immediate and ongoing attention from both mining companies and regulating authorities. Lack of a readily available database for pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quality fails to realise the potential for these water resources by both mining companies and Australian communities. Lack of access to pit lake quantity and water quality data may also lead to failure to manage this significant source of mining environmental risk.

Various attempts have been made to build leadership and management expertise with little success. There are numerous reasons these attempts have failed. Three reasons, along with suggested solutions, will be explored: 1) lack of ownership of the development process by those affected; 2) lack of congruence of the development process used and the business strategies of the organization; and 3) a comprehensive development process. We will discuss a development model applied inside a smelter and refining complex over one year involving all levels of management. The process was credited with helping to substantially reduce cost and enable breakthroughs in production, quality and safety results.

TauTona Mine (the renamed Western Deep Levels East) is using a longwall mining method with stability pillars to extract the Carbon Leader Reef at a depth ranging from 2097 metres to 3456 metres below surface. Seismic activity and the complexity and hazards associated with negotiating geological features at great depth pose the most severe hazard to deep level gold mining in South Africa. It impacts negatively on safety and the profitability of the mining. The critical success factors in longwalling at depth are: ?Sound mining strategies and face shape control ?Ensuring follow behind development infrastructure is kept up to date ?Support system design as a strategy to effectively limit the serious effects of damaging seismicity. This paper describes the following: ?Implementation of the required mining strategies ?The evolution of a new stope support system and problems associated with its development and implementation. How this support system was adapted for the successful negotiation of major geological features with known seismic potential and problems encountered ?Current initiatives to optimize follow behind development infrastructure ?Current initiatives in designing a new gully support system and problems experienced with its development and implementation. Finally, this paper will deal with the way forward, briefly covering areas like the above-mentioned gully support system, the proposed phased introduction of technology, and the use of alternative mining layouts.

"A flexible model involving perfect mixers, stagnant zones, plug flow, material bypassing and recycling zones has been developed for interpreting mixing phenomena in mineral processes. The mixing properties are described by the residence time distributions which can be subsequently interpreted by the flexible model. User-friendly computer programs (for 1MB-PC or compatible) have been developed for simulation and modelling of RTDs using the proposed model. Seven mineral processing case studies are discussed in terms of experimental procedure, model calibration results and application of the estimated mixing model to process modelling, diagnosis, and performance evaluation. IntroductionIn any mineral processing plant there are continuous-flow machines that transform or separate the ore components. Grinding mills, flotation cells, conditioning and leaching tanks are examples of such machines. The performances of these vessels or reactors are controlled by the rate at which the reaction proceeds and the time spent in the environment where the reaction occurs. This paper deals with the latter aspect of mineral processes operation.Since most of the reactions occurring in mineral processing units are time dependent, knowledge of the residence time of the material in process vessels is important for modelling and diagnosis purposes. Due to the random mixing phenomena involved in the process equipment, there is a distribution of the residence time of the ore particles and the fluid in the vessel. The probability density function E(t) that a micro-element of the material flowing through a processing unit stays a time t in the vessel, is the residence time distribution (RTD) of the corresponding component."

The Cliffs and Associates Limited (CAL) 500,000 tpy HBI plant located in Trinidad was commissioned after modifications in early 2001. This plant employs the novel Lurgi Circored® process to reduce iron ore fines using a combination of circulating fluidized bed and conventional fluidized bed reactors in a hydrogen based. This paper will review the advantages offered by working in the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, the Circored® processes, and plant start-up experience.

Downhole Seismic Testing (DST) is a very popular applied seismology site characterizing tool within geotechnical engineering. A challenging aspect of DST is to characterize the acquired seismic data sets to determine the analysis method that will result in the most accurate interval velocity values. BCE has invested considerable resources into developing Seismic Trace Characterization (STC), which uses various independent parameters of the acquired data at a particular depth. Initial work in this area resulted in the selection of the linearity estimate from the polarization analysis, the cross correlation coefficient of the full waveforms at the particular depth and the preceding depth and a uniquely developed parameter referred to as the signal shape parameter for this characterization. Subsequent analysis in STC identified two other parameters: the Signal-Noise-Ratio (SNR) and the Peak Symmetry Differential (PSD). The paper briefly describes these parameters and then outlines how they can guide the data analysis to derive more accurate results, especially near surface, which is especially important to assess the liquefaction potential in areas prone to earthquakes, such as California. The process will be illustrated with actual data from another area prone to earthquakes, namely New Zealand. 1. INTRODUCTION The near surface characterization of low strain in-situ shear wave velocities (VS) has proven critical for liquefaction assessment. Liquefaction is a phenomenon in which dynamic loading of saturated soil results in the material properties to change suddenly from a solid state to a liquefied state. VS is an important parameter for evaluating liquefaction potential due to fact that it is influenced by many of the variables that influence liquefaction (e.g., void ratio, soil density, confining stress, stress history, and geologic age (Andrus et al., 1997)). Aki and Richards (2002) also outline that the amplitude of ground motion should depend on the density and shear wave velocity of near surface soils and rocks according to the theory of wave propagation. Since the change in density with the increase in depth is relative minor compared to that of the shear wave velocity, the latter is a very useful parameter to represent site conditions (Stewart et al., 1997). Bray (2014) and his colleagues carried out an extensive geotechnical analysis of the catastrophic liquefaction that occurred in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2010 and 2011 and found that near surface rather than deep liquefaction resulted in extensive foundation damage.

Physical models from equivalent materials satisfying geometrical and physical similarity have been constructed. A special technology of simulating the excavation of an opening at the front part of a tunnel and of measuring the deformation at the tunnel face was applied. The results yielded by the physical models were used to formulate constitution relations in the numerical solution. This coupled modelling enables us to predict the behaviour of tunnel structures more accurately. On a construit des modèles physiques, réalisés en matériaux équivalents et répondant aux conditions de ressemblance géométrique et physique. Sur ces modèles, on a utilisé une technologie intéressante de simulation du forage du tunnel et de la mesure de déformation du front de taille pendant le forage en progression. Les résultats donnés par les modèles physiques ont été utilisés pour formuler les relations de constitution dans la solution numérique. Une telle construction de modèles combinés permet de prévoir plus précisément le comportement de la structure du tunnel. Es wurden physikalische Simulierungsmodelle aus äquivalenten Werkstoffen konstruiert, welche die Bedingungen der geometrischen und physikalischen Ähnlichkeiten erfüllen. Bei diesen Modellen hat man die interessante Simulationstechnologie des Tunnelvortriebs sowie die Verformungsmessung beim Tunnelabbaustoß während des Vortriebsvorgangs eingesetzt. Die Ergebnisse der physikalischen Simulation wurden zur Formulierung von Konstitutionsrelationen in der numerischen Lösung genützt. So eine kombinierte Simulation erlaubt eine genauere Prognose des Benehmens der Tunnelstruktur.

Environmental incidents involving mine tailings and waste rock inevitably become highly publicised and serve to damage the credibility of the entire industry. The recent serious incident involving a spill from a Romanian mine, was blamed for triggering æone of the worst environmental catastrophes in Eastern EuropeÆ. It is important to clearly demonstrate to the general public that these incidents are not representative of the industry as a whole. Where such incidents have occurred, the causes are generally related to poor design and/or construction, inadequate supervision and/or monitoring and maintenance, lack of independent expertise, inadequate risk identification and treatment and no provision to ensure that rehabilitation and long term management of the site occurs. Many people are unaware that these issues have been considered and provided for at the Martha Mine. Despite the fact that the first tailings storage facility has performed very well over fifteen years of operation, the long term safety and security of the tailings storage facilities continues to be questioned and debated by the public. The best way to address this is to provide quality information to enable a better understanding amongst the general public.

To determine the availability of lead and zinc from demonstrated resources, the Bureau of Mines evaluated 235 mines and deposits in 31 market economy countries. Of the 235 mines and deposits evaluated for this study, 186 were evaluated as zinc operations, 30 as lead operations, and 19 as copper operations. Demonstrated lead-zinc resources of market economy countries in 1981 were approximately 4.3 billion metric tons (t) of ore containing 221 million t of zinc and 97 million t of lead. Of these amounts, approximately 154 million t of zinc and 70 million t of lead are estimated to be recoverable. The analyses indicate that demonstrated resources in market economy countries should be sufficient to satisfy projected demand for primary lead and zinc through the balance of the century. The U.S. lead industry will continue to have a comparative advantage over the rest of the world industry, barring any drastic increase in the cost of compliance with pollution control regulations. It appears that the comparative disadvantage faced by the U.S. zinc industry will probably intensify owing to the relative quantity of lower cost zinc resources in other countries, especially Canada, Australia, Mexico, and Peru.
