It is unlikely, as In the past, improvement in truck efficiency and capacity can fully offset the effects of inflation, fuel costs/shortages and ever increasing haul distances. There-fore, investigations of haulage systems less sensitive to these problems are warranted. Thus, this U.S.B.M. contract research study on alternative continuous haulage systems was prepared. This study identifies the physical, economic and technological parameters in the application of continuous haulage systems with special attention to under pit slope conveyors and skip hoisting systems. The evaluation data was gathered from extensive literature searches. European/North American mine visits, and industry comments. The study concludes that continuous underground haulage is a viable method within the proper geometric configuration.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated residues from aluminum plants, to determine if carbon could be removed by flotation while recovering fluorine and aluminum compounds for recycling to the reduction process. This publication summarizes studies on samples representing three types of plant waste products, supplied by three aluminum-producing companies. Samples of flue dust, pot skimmings, and pot linings from the various plants all responded to a simple turpentine flotation scheme to reject 90 to 97 percent of the carbon. Aluminum compound recoveries ranged from 42 to 94 percent on the flue dust, were about 95 percent on the pot skimmings, and ranged from 75 to 89 percent on the pot linings. Fluorine recoveries from the same samples ranged from 35 to 63, 92 to 95, and 77 to 86 percent, respectively. The pot linings contained soluble salts of aluminum and fluorine which were recovered by precipitation with sodium aluminate and carbon dioxide gas. Composites of residues from each plant responded to flotation much the same as the individual samples. Aluminum is produced by the electrolysis of alumina in a molten cryolite bath. The electrolytic reduction cell consists of a carbon-lined box containing a pad of molten aluminum which serves as a cathode, a carbon anode, and an electrolyte of molten cryolite in which the alumina is dissolved. Alumina is reduced to aluminum at the cathode, and carbon is oxidized at the anode.

IMFA Group is the largest producer of Charge chrome not only in India but also in Asia. This Group has plants situated at Therubali and at Choudwar. They also have a Thermal power plant at Choudwar which not only caters to the power requirement of Choudwar plant but also supplies power to Therubali. The plants are fed for Chromite ore through the captive mines namely Nuasahi Chromite mines (40.47 Ha) , Bangur Chromite mines(37.34Ha), Sukinda chromite mines (116.76 Ha), Mahagiri Chromite Mine(73.777 Ha) and Chingudipal Chromite mines (26.62 Ha). Nuasahi Chromite Mine, which is situated in Keonjhar district, is an underground mine and is based upon best technological advancements in the industry. The underground mining operation is certified under ISO-9002, ISO-14001and OHSAS 18001. This not only shows the concern for the quality, environment but also for the health of the employees. The Nuashahi is the first chromite mine to backfill the opencast excavations created during the last 50 years and carry out the production from underground area below the opencast workings. This paper deals with the state of art technology of sub-level open stopping in thin ore bodies. The under-ground mine openings was started in the year 1997. In next four years the production of chromite from underground was started.(2001). At present the mine is in a good shape with several running stopes. Today it is producing around 10,000 Mt per month of chromite. The development of the mine is carried out with an average of 200 mtr per month of tunneling. The mine is having a mechanical ventilator having a capacity of24000 M3 per hour at 50mm water gauge, thus feeding sufficient air for the persons working in underground. The mine is being dewatered through a most modern positive suction sump, having a capacity of 500 cum and operated with 120 HP pumps. After commissioning of this sump in the year 2003, the mine has taken a quantum jump in production with remarkable saving in power consumption.

A common problem during the operation of the Kaldo furnace is the formation of accretions and blockage of the injection lance due to splashing. This typically occurs during the processing of anodic slimes for the production of doré. In this work, a 1:7 scale model of the Kaldo furnace currently in operation at Metalúrgica de Cobre, Mexico, was built in transparent acrylic plastic. Water and colored oil were used to represent the doré and slag, respectively. The model was used to determine the maximum penetration distance of the injection lance under a variety of experimental conditions at room temperature. Input variables included two types of oil, rotation speed, inclination angle, and the fraction of the vessel volume occupied by the liquids (φ). A mathematical correlation for the dimensionless maximum penetration distance of the injection lance d ∗ as a function of φ, the Froude number of the liquids in the vessel (Fr), the Reynolds number of the gas jet (Re), and the oil-to-water kinematic viscosity ratio (η)was developed. Reasonable agreement between the calculated and experimental values was obtained. Digital images showed that splashing was caused by the turbulent gas jet impinging upon the free surface of the liquids, whereas the cascade effect was negligible. The results of this work have been useful to improve the operation of an industrial Kaldo reactor.

The development of electronic initiation systems has partially reached or will reach in a short period of time full reliability for general use without limitations. Unfortunately those systems meet with a fully unprepared mining community and is confronted worldwide with blasting procedures which are not suitable to exploit the full range of the electronic option. This is for the time being only belonging to quarrying and general surface mining, for the use in underground operations the detonator is still not yet competitive, apart from special cases. It is not to be taken in doubts that the introduction for underground purposes will follow in a less shorter or longer period of time.

Le déménagement d?un niveau à un sous-niveau devrait se faire dans un quart de travail de 8 heures. L?option de largeur permet au client de choisir un équipement adapté à son environnement de travail (1). La largeur de la table de forage peut être modifiée selon les besoins du client entre 48" et 96". Cette particularité permet une meilleure stabilité, et plus de précision dans le forage (2). Il y a 4 pattes hydrauliques à chaque coin pour la stabilisation lors de forage (3). La table de forage a 360° d?angle de forage sur 3 côtés du transporteur. La table peut sortir de chaque côté du transporteur de 40 ½" à partir du centre du transporteur pour faciliter la mise en place de la foreuse dans les endroits difficiles d?accès. La plage de forage est considérablement agrandie. Cette caractéristique qui fonctionne hydraulique, permet à l?opérateur de forer sans être obligé de changer la position du transporteur pour des changements de trous. Tous les types de foreuse peuvent être installés sur cette table de forage (4). Sa petite dimension lui permet d?accéder, par des monteries de 30" de diamètre, à des sites de travail de 2,5 mètres de hauteur et largeur. C?est un équipement adapté aux gisements filoniens. Ce genre de gisement est de moins en moins rentable pour les compagnies minières. La mécanisation des ces gisements va permettre de les rentabilisés en augmentant la productivité et la santé du travailleur, en réduisant la dilution (5). Les manettes de contrôle de la foreuse, les mouvements de la table de forage ainsi que le déplacement du transporteur ont été installés selon les recommandations d?un ergonome. Des recherches ont été effectuées par ce spécialiste sur les cas d?accident survenus avec l?utilisation de ce genre d?équipement. Il a déterminé les positions le plus confortable que l?opérateur doit prendre pour éviter les douleurs prolongées (6). Le système de roulement est composé de 4 roues pleines installées sur 4 planétaires de 9000 à 15000 livres de capacité munis chacun d?un moteur hydraulique. Des freins ont été installés sur les planétaires pour assurer la sécurité de l?opérateur et faciliter le positionnement du transporteur lors du forage. Des roues rétractables peuvent être installées pour faciliter l?accès sur rail (7). Ce transporteur peut être alimenté par une puissance électrique plutôt que par une puissance pneumatique. Cette puissance électrique est fournie par un Power Pack qui transforme l?énergie en puissance hydraulique. Ce type d?alimentation est employé lors du forage de développement, mais il peut aussi être utilisé pour le forage long trou. Cet avantage permet au client qui a un problème de pression d?air d?utiliser l?électricité. Par contre si vous utilisez l?électricité mais que dans un secteur isolé le gros courant électrique n?est pas accessible vous pouvez utiliser votre équipement en utilisant la puissance pneumatique. Le changement d?alimentation énergétique se fait facilement (8). Cet équipement est construit pour effectuer 4 types d?activités : forage de développement de niveau et sousniveau avec l?installation d?un bras porteur, forage et pose de câbles d?encrage pour soutènement de terrain, forage de production long trou et forage de monterie ascendante et descendante. L?avantage est que vous investissez dans un seul équipement au lieu de 2 ou 3. Cet avantage vous fait économiser dans votre budget d?équipement. En plus cet équipement est construit pour de dure travaux et ne contient aucun système électronique (9).

"A new mineral sands operation is being developed in Georgia by Southern Ionics, Inc. (SII). Prevailing mineralogy and certain design constraints required detailed testing and circuit analysis to create a robust separation processes. The floating wet concentrator plant (WCP) and mineral separation plant (MSP) flow sheets were designed based on historical testing information and recent SII test campaigns on various composite feed samples. The flow sheets were finalized through rigorous process and orebody sequence modeling.The process uses traditional physical separation equipment; however a new MT spiral, the MG12, was selected for use on board the WCP for roughing duty. The MG12 spiral is a two-stage, twelve-turn spiral that has been proven to achieve very high recoveries of heavy minerals. The floating plant includes feed desliming operations, a central MT surge bin for optimum spiral circuit feed control and ancillary operations for concentrate and tailings handling. Scrubbed heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) is then transported to the MSP for concentration of the titanium and zirconium bearing mineral fractions.The testing, flowsheet development, and plant design will be described and explained, and a brief summary of the current project status will be given.IntroductionSouthern Ionics Inc. "Although CO2 content indicates the quantity of carbonate in altered basaltic rocks, it does not measure the intensity of carbonate alteration. CO/CaO molar ratios, which correlate with the relative proportions of individual carbonate species, measure the intensity of carbonatization. The Timmins gold area is characterized by pervasive carbonatization, with large parts of the area having CO2/Ca0 ratios greater than 1, representing C02 supersaturation relative to CaO. The mean CO/CaO in the Timmins area is0.67, compared to 0.13 in two unmineralized control areas. Regional arsenic abundance in the gold-bearing area averages 4 ppm, compared to about 0.35 ppm for the non-mineralized areas. The average K20 and Rb abundances are similar in both mineralized and non-mineralized areas (about 0.30% K20 and 7 ppm Rb). Although there appears to have been no wholesale addition of K20 or Rb to the mineralized area from external sources, these alkalies have been redistributed internally, resulting in patterns of local enrichments and depletions which are characteristic of the mineralized region.Local target anomalies associated with known mineralization consist of CO2/Ca0 > 1.5, As > 10 ppm and K2O > 0. 75%. Not all three values are required to be above these thresholds in order to identify local targets. Combinations such as C02/ Ca0 > 1.5 and As < 10 ppm, CO/CaO 1-1.5 and K20 > 0. 75 or K20 > 0. 75 and As > 10 ppm are equally indicative of proximity to gold occurrences. Gold-bearing veins and associated anomalies occur throughout the entire volcanic succession and are not restricted to any particular stratigraphic horizons. The levels and patterns of alteration and occurrences of gold appear to be structurally controlled."

A novel instrumentation and analysis technique, called GLOSTREXT method has recently been introduced for bored pile load tests in Malaysia. This technique provides an innovative and improved alternative for conventional bored pile instrumentation methods commonly practiced for the past few decades. Results for five case histories involving full scale static load tests for high capacity bored piles with both new and conventional instrumentation details placed in within the same instrumented piles are presented to demonstrate the advantages of this novel technique. Results show good agreement between the new and conventional instrumentation.

In addition to fractures and joints, compositional factors and bedding influence the strength of clastic sedimentary rocks. Rock mass rating schemes must therefore consider all of these factors. In this paper, a rating scheme for clastic sediments based on geophysical measurements is described. Geo-physical logging allows an approximation of rock com-position to be obtained and an assessment of bedding frequency and laminations. Velocity measurements incorporate the effects of fracturing. The rating requires scores for the intact rock, bedding/cohesion, and defects. These are combined to yield a Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR). Determination of the GSR is objective and repeatable. GSR values are typically between 20 and 80 and can be related to the Coal Mine Roof Rating.

Raising capital by issuing debt or equity is necessary in almost every corporation. In the field of corporate finance, the raising of capital is a heavily-studied topic. However, some of what is studied on this topic in corporate finance is not applicable in the mining industry. There are also many financing options that were created for the mining industry such as flow-through shares, prepaid forwards, and royalty sales. The cyclical nature of the industry makes the risk-return profile of financings more difficult to estimate than in other industries. Additionally, the methods used to assess firm value are different than other industries, as the values of orebodies are not included on balance sheets. For precious metals companies, which are a hedge against most other securities, there are additional complications with determining investor expectations and cost of equity. This thesis puts forth a decision-making framework to explain mine financing choices from the perspective of mining companies. The approach is threefold. First, all of the major equity and debt financing instruments available to mining companies are presented and analyzed. Each financing method is assessed on a wide range of criteria. Next, these concepts are applied in case studies of four companies: BHP Billiton, Barrick Gold, Teck Resources, and Noront Resources. For each company, the overall choice of financing methods is shown and analyzed. The effect of financing choices on the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) is calculated. The final section deals with case studies of individual mine finance decisions during the past two years.

This report addresses remote monitoring of coal waste impoundments for stability. Existing automated geotechnical monitoring systems are described and reviewed along with details of instruments suitable for such systems. An impoundment in West Virginia which was in the construction stage was instrumented and monitored between July 1979 and may 1981. Sensors which measure surface and subsurface parameters including settlement, horizontal deflection, surface tilt, pore water pressure, seepage, pond level, and meteorological parameters were installed. Data from the 37 sensors were collected by on-site logger and transmitted by telephone to a central processing station in Seattle for recording and interpretation. Difficulties were encountered with telephone and powerline outages and malfunction of electronic units. Detailed descriptions of the design and performance of the system are provided along with evaluation and comparison with other systems. Recommendations for improving and expanding the capabilities of the monitoring system are given.

At its most basic level, minerals project management may be broken down into a series of logical chronological phases, described in this paper as: exploration, discovery; scoping and pre-feasibility; feasibility and approval; project financing and commissioning; operation; expansion and closure. Each phase has its own peculiarities and challenges, any one of which can potentially upset the forward progress of a minerals project.Reference is made to each of these project phases based on the authorÆs many years of first-hand experience, in an attempt to identify issues within the project management spectrum where additional caution may be warranted. The copper smelting gas / slag / matte / metal / solids system with the Cu-Fe-Ca-Si-O-S major elements has been a long-term focus of the present overall research program using integrated experimental and modelling approach for the phase equilibria characterisation and development of a thermodynamic database. A systematic investigation of phase equilibria of slag systems in equilibrium with Cu metal is providing information for systems where copper coexists in slag with lead, zinc, and aluminium oxides as major components. Experimental studies involve high-temperature equilibration of synthetic samples; rapid quenching; and measurement of the compositions of equilibrium phases using electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA). Particularly important feature of the present study a wide range of temperatures (660-1670°C) being characterised that reveals major inconsistencies in the existing thermodynamic description of the multicomponent system, and allows to establish the thermodynamic properties from phase equilibria in a reliable way. FactSage-based thermodynamic modelling is integrated with experimental research. Initial thermodynamic assessments are used to identify priorities for experiments, planned to provide specific data for thermodynamic optimisation. Significant improvement in the accuracy of the phase equilibria description is achieved, in particular in the PbO-Cu2O-SiO2, ZnO-Cu2O-SiO2, and Cu2O-CaO- Al2O3 systems in equilibrium with metallic Cu. INTRODUCTION Slags high in lead and copper are generated in primary metal production in the smelting of lead sulfide concentrates and in pyrometallurgical metal recycling systems. The compositions of these slags are varied due to increased fraction of recycled materials in the feed as well as introduction of previously unused chemical elements to modern technology. Therefore, their processing becomes chemically more complex; in that way they contain a large number of different metals. These slags form complex non-ideal solutions (with possible formation of several immiscible slags) that can coexist with stoichiometric solids, solid solutions, mattes and molten metal depending on the bulk composition and process conditions. Predicting the outcomes of smelting and refining processes is becoming increasingly difficult. To assist in the optimisation of these metallurgical processing operations, a comprehensive research program is underway to develop accurate thermodynamic databases for these non-ferrous process systems.

When conducting gold leach tests on free milling gold ores which method is the best, bottle rolls or the stirred beaker test? Recently, a client requested that gold leach tests be conducted using the stirred beaker methodology. When asked why, because the laboratory was set up to conduct tests using the bottle rolls technique the reply was that the stirred beaker leach test would replicate the plant more closely. Not wishing to upset the client, the instructions were followed. However, the opportunity was taken to complete additional tests so that the two leach procedures could be compared. Further, this comparison was completed on two different gold ores as well as a number of different grinding media types.This paper provides a description of the two laboratory techniques employed, and presents the results of these parallel tests. Interestingly, the assertion that the stirred beaker methodology more closely replicated plant performance was not validated. In fact, the results obtained using this procedure were noticeably different from those observed in the plant, with lower recoveries and significantly higher cyanide consumptions. The bottle rolls test however more adequately replicated plant performance in terms of recovery and cyanide consumption. Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF) hot dust-laden is cooled in a waste heat boiler (WHB) and then dedusted in electrostatic precipitators (ESP’s) before being treated, together with the Peirce Smith Converters off-gases, in the sulfuric acid plants for SO2 removal. FSF dust is sulfated by SO2 and O2 in the WHB. Typically, 70% of the dust from the FSF drops in the WHB while the remainder is caught in the ESPs. The collected dust is recycled to the FSF for Cu recovery. Some smelters have developed hydrometallurgical treatments to recover Cu from the dust; impurities, such as As and Bi, are bled as leach plant residues. This paper presents a study (laboratory scale), of leaching the FSF dust, generated in Atlantic Copper Smelter using the weak acid bleed from the gas scrubbing/cooling section (GSCS) of sulfuric acid plants. Leaching was performed with 0.5 mol L-1 sulfuric acid concentration, 60ºC, and a solid/liquid ratio 1/3. After leaching, H2O2 was used for arsenic and iron oxidation. pH was adjusted for precipitation of arsenic and iron as scorodite or as scorodite and arsenical jarosite. The precipitation was carried out at 95ºC during 3-6 h. Liquids after precipitation are suitable for subsequent treatments of electrolysis. INTRODUCTION The copper smelter dusts are usually recirculated totally or partially to the flash furnace. This practice increases the amount of impurities feeding the furnace. Some authors have developed processes for treatment of these materials for copper and zinc recovery and for arsenic, antimony and bismuth inertization. The processes for the treatment of copper smelter dusts can be pyrometallurgical (Yu, 1987; Carter, Vance, Aldridge, Zaw, & Khoe, 1994; Fu, Jiang &Wang, 2000), hydrometallurgical, or mixed processes (Yin et al, 1992; Mulale, Mwema, & Mashala, 1999; Gorai, Jana, & Khan, 2002). Hydrometallurgical processes have been extensively studied and, in some cases, applied to an industrial scale. The most important chemical reagent proposed for leaching the dusts has been sulfuric acid (Roman-Moguel, Plascencia, Pérez, & Garcia, 1995; Gabb, & Evans, 1997; Larouche, 2001; Morales, Cruells, Roca, & Bergó, 2010; Cáceres, Cruells, Morales, & Roca, 2012; Ecometales, 2013; Yang, Fu, Liu, Chen, & Zhang, 2017). Processes developed in alkaline media, and in some cases with the presence of sulfide, have also been carried out (Gabler, & Jones, 1988; Morales, Hevia, & Cifuentes, 2009; Alguacil, Garcia-Diaz, Lopez, Rodriguez, & Alonso, 2013), as well as by using a bioleaching process (Massinaie, Oliazadeh, & Seyed Bagheri, 2006; Bakhtiari, Atashi, Zivdar, Seyedbagheri, & Fazaelipoor, 2011).

Extraction and separation of La, Sm and Dy ions from acidic sulfate-phosphate solutions was investigated using a cation exchange extractant, bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid, CYANEX 272, in kerosene. The influence of shaking time, equilibrium pH, extractant, sulfate and phosphate ion concentrations, diluent type and temperature was studied. The extraction was found to be pH-dependent, and increasing the phosphate ion concentration inhibited the extraction which was found to be endothermic. The stoichiometry of the extracted metal species was found to be MOH.H2OHSO4H2A.A2. Aliphatic diluents were found to enhance the extraction compared to aromatic diluents. The results showed that there was a separation mode between the metal ions when varying the hydrogen ion and sulfate ion concentrations, under the used experimental conditions. The investigated process was used for the recovery of La, Sm and Dy from the acid solution resulting from the leaching of low-grade monazite.
