"Methane gas explosions in a longwall coal mine can originate from in or around the gob and can seriously harm nearby workers and equipment. In order to fully understand the explosion flame and pressure wave propagation in the mine, it is important to investigate methane flame propagation in confined spaces as well as flame interaction with rock rubble and other mine structures. The latter can lead to enhanced turbulence causing high-speed deflagrations and/or detonations. Researchers ignited methane-air mixtures in horizontal, cylindrical reactors that contained inserts to simulate various gob characteristics. Rock surface topology and ignition location were investigated. Results show rock surface roughness increased fluid motion, thereby increasing methane flame front propagation velocity, overall pressure rise of the explosion, and time of pressure decay. Moving the point of ignition away from the open end of the reactor resulted in an increase in peak overpressure and an overall pressure rise of the explosion. Experiments were used to validate a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) combustion model that will be incorporated into a mine-scale explosion model to simulate and predict explosion hazards of large scale methane gas deflagrations in longwall coal mines. INTRODUCTION Coal mining is an integral part to our global society with coal-fired power plants providing about 40% of our global electricity [1]. A common method of extracting coal underground is by longwall mining. Researchers and investigative reports have found that explosive gas zones of methane-air mixtures can form along the longwall face and within the longwall gob, presenting an explosion risk to nearby workers and equipment [2]. In an explosion, the resulting flame and pressure wave presents a fatal traumatic injury hazard and can cause serious damage to equipment. In order to evaluate and mitigate the explosion risks in longwall coal mining, researchers at the Colorado School of Mines are developing a coupled CFD and combustion model of a longwall coal mine. The purpose of the model will be to better predict the explosion hazards under various mine conditions in order to build stronger prevention and mitigation strategies for miners."

An information system (I/S) plan is a means for establishing and communicating the direction the organization intends to take to provide the information required for achievement of organizational goals and objectives. The rapid advancements in information technology, the increasing complexity of systems, and the growing dependence of mining companies on these information systems have emphasized the need for more comprehensive I/S planning. This subsection explores this need, the role I/S planning can play within a mining company, and finally describes a methodology for development of an I/S plan.

In an approach to the complicated study of bauxite from Les Baux de Provence it is necessary to consider the paleogeographical context of all the bauxites in southern France. These bauxites are of Karstic type, belonging to a metallogenic area extending from the Pyrenees Mountains to the Alpine Massif. Within this area each deposit does not always correspond to the same geological period. There are differing opinions regarding the origin of Karstic-type bauxite and a discussion of these various theories is beyond the scope of this paper. Bauxite of Les Baux, in Provence, was discovered in 1821 by the chemist, Berthier, near this picturesque village located in the region of Arles. It is Les Baux from which the name of bauxite originates. For a long time this bauxite was of no interest because of high silica 'and mediocre alumina content. Besides, the calcium carbonate content is somewhat high and is one of the main characteristics of Les Baux bauxite. The problem of exploration of the Les Baux deposit has been to prospect minable zones according to traditional norms where silica and carbonate are low.

A four-mile length of interceptor sewer tunnel in Manhattan has finished sizes ranging from 10'6" to 14'6" horseshoe. Mixed face conditions were anticipated in three areas and encountered in five. All were short but since the tunnel lies well below the water table and failures would involve important utilities, major structures and human lives, great care had to be exercized in choosing a construc¬tion method. Chemical consolidation was selected as the best approach with compressed air working as a backup system. Initially grouting was accomplished from within the tunnel, but treatment from the surface was more successful and was later adopted. The soils consisted largely of impermeable weak silts and it was found possible to inhibit access of water to this material so that it could be controlled by breasting within the tunnel without loss of stability. It is concluded that in the interlayered permeable and impermeable soils encountered, chemical grouting would successfully stabilize the working face. INTRODUCTION An interceptor sewer is currently under construction along the entire length of the west side of Manhattan. When complete, the tunnel will intercept and divert to a treatment plant (also under construction) a daily flow in excess of 200 million gallons per day. About 9 miles of the interceptor sewer is in tunnel and the remain¬der is cut-and-cover construction. Sanitary landfilling has become one of the most widely used methods of disposing of solid refuse. A principal concern of regulatory agencies and the public itself is that landfill operations do not degrade the physical environment, including water resources, and the ground-water reservoir in particular. Ground-water and engineering geology can guide landfill operations into suitable terranes or develop measures to compensate for any natural limitations at a particular site Experience and research in Illinois suggest four activities relating to landfill disposal that warrant attention by geologists and engineers: (1) Regional delineation of favorable and unfavorable hydrogeologic conditions to facilitate planning and preliminary screening of potential landfill sites. (2) Site evaluations, with considerations of geologic materials, topography, water levels, flow systems, and local occurrence and use of water resources. (3) Re- search on aspects of the hydrogeologic environment that control effects of, or are modified by, landfills. (4) Formulation of practices in the siting, construction, and operation of landfills that prevent, mitigate, or isolate deleterious effects. The first two activities are basically in the domain of earth science, requiring the application of fundamental concepts of geology and hydrology and conventional site-exploration methods. The third activity, research, requires contributions from geology as well as other disciplines, including soil physics, sanitary engineering, and chemistry. The fourth calls for policy decisions by regulatory agencies and elected officials, using the contributions of scientists and engineers.

During the testing and design of the Gold Fields' Chimney Creek mine, it was found that a much higher carbon loading was possible with CIC (carbon-in-solution columns) than with CIP (carbon-in-pulp). In an effort to keep the carbon handling minimized, an emphasis was put on forcing gold to the CIC circuit rather than the CIP. After considerable study, it was found that a circuit with two thickeners and an interstage leach would force 90% of the gold to CIC. Computer modelling indicates that the benefits of the hybrid circuit include higher recovery, less carbon handling, fewer leach tanks, and lower reagent costs.

Although the markets for coal in the United States have changed rapidly over the last three decades, the uses of coal, namely, to produce heat and power or coke have been left almost unchanged. The coke is used either as a chemical reducing agent alone or as a reducing agent and source of heat. Most of the heat and power markets for coal require no coal processing, although for more than 50 years, many proposals to skim the more valuable substances in coal before burning have been advanced. Thus, the only large tonnage market requiring processing of coal is high-temperature carbonization to make coke. At present, coal requires processing for some small markets, but for future potential large markets, such as gasification, conversion to liquid and gaseous fuels, and conversion to chemicals, coals will require more processing than is now being done.

According to the Balandin's (1) "multiplet theory of catalysis", adsorption can occur only if atoms of the reactant molecules are congruent with surface atoms of the catalyst. Such a condition calls for certain definite geometrical relationships between the reactant molecules and the atoms at the surface of the catalyst. If such a match or geometrical 'fit' is not provided, the surface reaction will not take place. An appropriate analogy to this may be the lock and key theory that enzymes should fit a substrate just as a key fits a lock. Similar geometrical considerations in adsorption studies were made in connection with the flotation of minerals. Gaudin(2) and Gaudin and Preller (3) proposed that if the dimensions of collector ions are in registry with the mineral lattice, an ordered layer of adsorbed species is formed. They explained that the structural fit is one reason for good flotation of galena with xanthate. In another study, Bachmann (4) attributed the selective flotation of KC1 from NaCl with amine to the fact that the lattice parameter of the amine collector is closer to that of KC1. Schubert(5) investigated the flotation of various nonmetallic minerals with amine and pyridine, and related the dimensions of the collector ions with the anion distances of the mineral surface. He concluded that good flotation is obtained when the tolerance is within 20%. The geometrical theory has also been used by Groszek (6) to explain the preferential adsorption of n-paraffin onto the basal plane of graphite. The geometrical theory has thus been found useful in explaining adsorptive properties of an adsorbate relative to the substrate structure. The purpose of the present work is to examine the possibilities of a geometrical fit between sodium dodecyl sulfate and Cu(OH)2 surface, and to construct a crystallographic model of the surface compound.

"A paper called “Global Experience with Soft Ground and Weak Rock Tunneling under Very High Groundwater Heads” was presented at the North American Tunneling 2006 conference (Holzhäuser et.al 2006). It summarized global experience with earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry shield tunneling on nine projects that encountered groundwater heads ranging from 6 to 11 bar. Since then, additional projects have been completed with groundwater heads ranging from 7 to 15 bar. Of these, the high pressure tunneling experience on the Lake Mead Intake No. 3 project in Nevada and on the Eurasia Tunnel (Istanbul Strait Crossing) had the greatest lengths of tunneling at face pressure over 7 bar. Experience with sustained pressurized face tunneling at groundwater heads over 7 bar and risk management observations are the focus of this paper. INTRODUCTION High groundwater head, particularly at 7 bar or more, is a major challenge when tunnelling in high permeability ground and on drives long enough to require cutter changes. It has a strong impact on design and operation of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) in order to protect the main bearing from contamination, prevent excessive groundwater inflow, ensure face stability and enable access to the cutterhead and excavation chamber for maintenance. During the past 20 years, TBM manufacturers and suppliers have made tremendous improvements that allow tunneling at groundwater pressures to 17 bar or more. The most significant risk with high pressure tunneling is generally that of excavation chamber access and potentially the cutterhead for cutter changes, cutterhead repairs and TBM maintenance. Hyperbaric interventions are possible and safety variances have been approved for saturation dive interventions at pressures as high as 17 bar (Lake Mead Intake No. 3). While high pressure hyperbaric intervention equipment is available and safety approvals can be obtained at many locations, few contractors consider the cost and risk of hyperbaric interventions over 7 bar to be acceptable as the primary means of excavation chamber access. Experience with high pressure tunneling prior to 2006 was summarized in a paper entitled “Global Experience with Soft Ground and Weak Rock Tunneling under Very High Groundwater Heads” (Holzhäuser et.al 2006). That paper provided information on 9 projects: South Bay Ocean Outfall, San Diego; Channel Tunnel (French Side), France; Storebaelt Tunnel, Denmark; 4th Elbe Tunnel, Germany; Wesertunnel, Germany; Westerschelde Tunnel, Netherlands; St. Petersburg Red Line, Russia; Nara Prefecture Water Conveyance Tunnel, Japan; and Tokyo Wan Aqua Line Tunnel, Japan – see Table 1."

The mining industry responded to public concerns about use of cyanide by developing a voluntary certification to allow companies to demonstrate their commitment. The International Cyanide Code (Code) establishes standards for the manufacture, transportation and use of cyanide. Key concepts in closure planning to comply with the Code are to decommission all facilities related to cyanide operations and to provide a financial assurance mechanism for those activities. Code requirements may differ from state-specific regulations, but requirements are based on closure goals for protection of the human health and the environment. Only issues related to cyanide operations are required to be included in decommissioning demonstrations. For example, the disposal method of cyanide solution holding tanks and the cost must be included in the closure plan, but information regarding closure of roads is not required. Closure costs must be based on a third-party contractor as opposed to internal budgets. Compliance with the closure requirements of the Code allows companies to show their stockholders, lending institutions, and the public that their operations are environmentally responsible.

Seismic exploration techniques offer the engineer and geologist a way of obtaining detailed information on the physical parameters and geometry of the rocks where extensive underground excavation or tunneling is proposed. Use of the seismic method can provide a greater amount of detailed information at relatively less cost than can be obtained by any other known subsurface exploration method. Boreholes are still required for calibration of the seismic data but at a much wider geographic spacing than otherwise would be needed for subsurface mapping. The seismic data can define with precision the actual location of zones of flexure or fracture of the rocks and reveal the configuration of the surface of the rock layers. ENGINEERING PROBLEMS One of the major requirements in the planning of subsurface installations is that of locating tunnels and other underground openings in favorable rock units. Such rock units should exhibit uniformity of composition, both vertically and horizontally, to minimize variation in excavation techniques. The depth and thickness of the unit must be known: a 30-foot diameter tunnel cannot be contained in a 25-foot thick limestone. The rock unit needs to be as free as possible from structural defects and should be suited to efficient excavation procedures. If liquid conduits are planned, the slope of the rock unit needs to be known so that maximum advantage can be taken of gravity flow with the tunnels wholly contained within the unit.

The process of treating granular activated carbon for return to service in the recovery of gold in Carbon in Pulp and Carbon in Leach circuits has been investigated. Carbons from four U.S.A. mines, one Canadian mine and one South African mine were characterized before and after regeneration. The use of thermal gravimetric analyses demonstrated the presence of inorganic compounds on the surface of the carbon. Thermal regeneration was investigated using factorial' analysis to determine the effect or interaction of furnace temperature, retention time and the use of supplemental steam. The operation of acid leaching prior to or after gold elution was investigated. The effect of water quenching, regenerated carbon was also studied. From the data obtained in this investigation, guidelines are given for effective regeneration operation.

This paper addresses the impact of declining world rutile resources upon the production of titanium products and their asso¬ciated costs. Titanium is used primarily for the production of pigments; in its metal form it is considered a strategic and critical material to the U.S. defense and aerospace industries. There are two major mineral sources for titanium: ilmenite and rutile. Both these mineral types can be used to produce titanium pigments. Only high grade titanium concentrates, such as rutile, high-grade ilmenite, and synthetic rutile (which is produced through further processing of ilmenite), can be used in the production of titanium metal. This paper draws upon the data and analyses of a recent Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability Program appraisal that evaluated the international availability of titanium from market economy countries. The paper will show that production from economic rutile mines will decline sometime after the turn of the century and that rutile shortages could be alleviated by production from other high-grade titanium resources such as higher cost rutile deposits and anatase deposits, or through an increase in world synthetic rutile capacity.

PT Kaltim Prima Coal's 13.1 km overland conveyor was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 troughed belt type. Cost and performance optimisation during initial design ended up with 5.4m/s belt speed, 1,000mm belt width to convey 1,350tph, and 7mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1,100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30mtpa. Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4200tph satisfactorily.

Lornex Mining Corporation operates an open pit porphyry copper mine in the Highland Valley southwest of Kamloops with a rated capacity of 43 500 TPD (48,000 TPD). It went into production in April 1972. Its concentrator consists of two grinding and flotation circuits in parallel each composed of a 6 000 KW (8,000 HP) 9,75 m (32 foot) diameter by 4,724 m (15'-6") semi-autogenous primary mill feeding two 3 000 KW (4,000 HP) 5,029 m (16.5 foot) diameter by 7,01 m (23 foot) secondary ball mills each feeding a bank of flotation cells. ,The original tailings system picked up the tailings from the flota¬tion circuits in a concrete collection box in the mill and carried the 36% solids density by weight slurry 488 m (1,600LF) through a 1100 mm (42 inch) diameter wood stave pipeline on a .46 percent slope to three 99,06 m (325 foot) diameter center drive thickeners. From the collection box under the thickeners the tailings line con¬sisted of three sections, carrying 50% solids density slurry. The first section consisted of 1460 m (4,800 LF) of 910 mm (36 inch) asbestos cement pipe for gravity flow from the thickener under flow elevation of 1252,4 m (4,109 feet) to the first pump station at elevation 1207,6 m (3,962 feet). Eight concrete drop boxes were used to limit the maximum slope on the pipeline to 0.5 percent.

Table I contains the production figures for each of these commodities in the US and in the world in 1977. Specifications for concentrates are also summarized as well as prices for concentrates in 1977. In each chapter an attempt has been made to describe the more common commercial mineral involved with the commodity and the processes used to recover and concentrate the minerals, as well as geographical areas where these processes are utilized.

MINERALS INFORMATION PROGRAM Mineral data collection by the Federal Government actually began in 1882 with an appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the Bureau of Mines was instituted in 1910, it was not until 1924 that the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of worldwide information on production, consumption, and availability of minerals became the responsibility of the Bureau. The objective of the Bureau's minerals information program is to maintain and provide reliable, timely, and comprehensive data for analysis of national minerals problems. This program is implemented by a staff of specialists who cover about 100 mineral commodities and the mineral industries of 168 countries. Data are also provided on the minerals industry on the State and county level. The specialists analyze information to identify trends and problems, forecast future U.S. and world supply and demand for the nonfuel minerals, and relate trends and developments to their impact on the domestic minerals industry. Data Sources and Publications The primary sources of data concerning the domestic minerals industry are the companies that produce, use, and trade in these minerals. Approximately 60,000 survey forms are sent to industry, on a monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis, to obtain the data. Domestic trade data are provided by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Information on mineral developments abroad is developed by Bureau specialists from mineral reports supplied by U.S. embassies worldwide, from primary source documents, from a review of the technical mining literature, and from onsite mine and plant visits in foreign countries. The information is disseminated through a number of Bureau publications: "Mineral Industry Surveys" provide aggregated data on a monthly. quarterly, or semiannual basis to give timely information on the most important mineral commodities. "Mineral Commodity Summaries," published each January, provides preliminary annual data on supply and demand and discusses significant events of the previous year. The final data are published later in the "Minerals Yearbook," which is the definitive historical record for mineral statistics. "Mineral Facts and Problems," an encyclopedic work issued every 5 years, covers industry structure, technology, supply-demand analysis. economic factors, reserves, and forecasts of U.S. and world demand for individual commodities. "Mineral Perspectives" and "Mineral Issues" cover important international mineral developments and significant issues of current U.S. policy as they relate to minerals. Discussions and analyses of mineral trends and developments also appear in other Bureau publications, such as "Minerals and Materials" and "Information Circulars." These publications provide the basis for analysis and policy determinations by the Bureau and by virtually every Federal agency concerned with minerals, defense issues, the national economy, and foreign relations. The data are also used by industry in planning capital investments in mines and processing plants, by financial analysts, by U.S. delegations in their work with international commodity groups, and by a host of other minerals related organizations. Data Bases The data bases used by the specialists for preparing publications or in response to a continuous stream of inquiries include both those that contain individual commodity data from respondents, and those that are summary data bases on production, trade, capacity, employment and a number of other minerals-related items, not all of which are derived from data reported to the Bureau of Mines. The data bases maintained on the mainframes are not accessible by non- Bureau users. Investment activity in the Pacific Rim of Fire has seen a phenomenal surge from epithermal gold exploration. Individual countries are attractive because of lower up-front minerals lease costs (United States, Canada), better geological prospects (Chile, Indonesia), or cheaper equities (Australia). Since the October 1987 stock market crash, large companies are shedding minority joint venture interests to focus on core businesses. Some vertical integration is evident in Japanese coal investments in the Pacific Rim. This article does not cover the aluminum industry oligopoly, which is multinational in character. Nor does it cover the many Canada to US minerals investments. It will be interesting to see if the new US-Canadian free trade treaty will reverse that investment flow. Cross-border investments The following examples should dispel any doubts about the significance of cross-border investment in the Pacific Rim. The mechanism of gold uptake from iodide solutions by carbon has been investigated. Adsorption isotherms for gold and iodine were established. For activated carbon, approximately 300 mg of gold and 1000 mg of iodine were extracted per gram of carbon at maximum loading. Examination of loaded activated carbon particles by scanning electron microscopy reveals isolated patches of gold deposited on the carbon surface. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that fine gold particles (1-4 nm diameter) are uniformly distributed within the carbon. Iodine was also observed throughout the matrix. The uptake of gold by carbon from iodide solution involves a combined reduction and adsorption process, where the gold iodide species is reduced to the metallic state superficially and adsorbed in the porous structure of carbon. A few experiments for the gold-chloride and gold-bromide systems were carried out for comparison.

Radon is an established lung carcinogen and remains the most important environmental radiation exposure. It was estimated that inhalation of radon and its short-lived decay products accounts on average for about one half of the effective dose equivalent from all natural sources of radiation. Radon contained in household water can transferred into room air as a result of agitation or heating. An indoor air concentration of 400 Bq/m3 is obtained if the radon concentration in household water is 4 kBq/L. A typical concentration of radon in ground water is about 1000 times lower than this concentration but sometime elevated concentrations of some kBq/L in ground water are reported. In this work a Liquid Scintillation counting system is used to obtain fast and accurate measurements of radon (222Rn) in water samples from Argolida, Greece.
