Coke Since the beginning of manufacturing of metallurgical coke in the United States, which dates from about 1859, Pennsylvania has main tamed supremacy in coke production Available statistics for the year 1880 show an output of 3,338,300 short tons, which was neatly trebled by the end of the succeeding 10 years. From this time on the increase was steady, though not rapid, and in 1922 the total production was 13,991,892 tons, which is approximately 37 per cent of the total coke production of the United States. The main reason for the rapid development of the coke industry in Pennsylvania lies in the abundance of coals particularly adapted to beehive coking, for which purpose the Pittsburgh bed in the Connellsville district has long been looked upon as standard At first practically all metallurgical coke was made in beehive ovens, the only exception being the short lived and wasteful method of coking in piles, byproduct owns did not make then appearance until after 1893 The suitability of a beehive coking coal cannot be accurately predicted from its chemical analysis, but it can be said, perhaps, that the volatile matter should be about 32 per cent, and that the oxygen content should not be mole than 10 pet cent or less than 4 per cent The sulphur and phosphorus content should be small-not over 1 25 per cent sulphur and under 0 02 pen cent phosphorus-and the ash content should not be over 7 per cent The Pittsburgh bed at Connellsvnlle fills these requirements well, as may be seen from the following representative analysis. The vapor pressures of liquid molybdenum and liquid zirconium were determined by the Langmuir free-evaporation method. An electron-beam furnace with a water-cooled copper crucible was used for melting. Temperature was measured with a two-color ratio pyrometer. The vapor-pressure data led to the following equations: [log p (atm) = 5.429 - 28,380 T for liquid molybdenum in the range 2,890° to 2,990° K, and log p (atm) = 6.521 - 30,940 T for liquid zirconium in the range 2,229° to 2,795° K.] Third-law evaluations of each data set gave mean heats of sublimation (298.15° K) of 157.6 ± 1.8 kcal/mole and 148.4 ± 2.4 kcal/mole for molybdenum and zirconium, respectively, where the uncertainties are two standard devia¬tions. Second-law standard heats of sublimation determined from sigma plots and tabulated enthalpies were 143.5 ± 2.7 kcal/mole and 149.2 ± 3.8 kcal/mole for molybdenum and zirconium, respectively. The better agreement in heats of sublimation for zirconium is attributed to the 566° K temperature range studied which permitted a more accurate definition of the vapor pressure curve than could be obtained from the 100° K span for molybdenum. This supposition was verified by making a sigma-prime plot which utilized solid vapor pressure data for molybdenum to extend the evaluation range by 800° K. This gave a standard heat of sublimation of 155.2 ± 1.6 kcal/mole which is in good agree¬ment with the third-law value. The plot also gave a standard entropy of sublimation (298.15° K) of 35.73 ± 0.48 eu.

Develop a dry dust collector suitable for working faces and belt transfer paints. Approach A filter cartridge with a reverse-pulse, self-cleaning system has been mounted in-to a low profile unit requiring electric power only. How It Works Dust-laden air entering the in-let end of the collector passes through the two inline filter elements. When the elements load to a pre-selected pres-sure drop, they are automatically pulse-cleaned by a "backflush" method using compressed air. When the elements are pulse-cleaned, caked dust material on the filter surface is released, and falls away as lumps. Dust is removed from the collector by an auger mechanism. Features of the collector are: (1) unit is completely self-contained, (2) built-in air compressor for pulse-cleaning, (3) cleaning cycle initiates automatically at a preset restriction, (4) automatic auger discharge of collected dust, (5) detachable extension auger for transporting collected dust, (6) "dust leak" indicator light, and (7) "change filter element II warning light. The collector has been designed as permissible although approval has not yet been granted.

This paper describes come mechanical raid electrical signal systems in common use in Metal-mine shafts, together with several distinctive systems that indicate or control the origin of the signal. The latter systems remove the hazard of the movement of the cage from one level in response to signals from another. Previous publications of the Bureau of Mines have covered several meritorious installations One of the best signal systems for deep shafts is at the Homestake mine4/. A successful installation of an induction system in the Lake Superior mining region permits signaling as well as telephoning from cages at rest or in motion5/. El Potosi mine uses a variation of the three-wire electric system6/. A mine in Utah has developed a system of the double trolly-wire type, in which the cage attendant may signal from a moving cage7/. At present no system of the sine-shaft signaling employing radio is available.

This contract was directed toward a study of the attenuating properties of earmuffs as worn by miners. Two attenuation measurement procedures were utilized. Human subjects were tested in a diffuse sound field according to threshold shift procedures recommended by the American National Standards Institute and a physical measurement procedure was accomplished in the same diffuse field on the same human subjects with microphones placed simultaneously on the inside and outside of the muffs. All measurements were obtained in one third octave of random noise. The results of the study indicated that physical and psychophysical attenuation measurements are in essential agreement at frequencies from 125 Hz to 2 KHz. Above 2 KHz the psychophysical measurement demonstrates larger amounts of attenuation than the physical measurement. The difference in attenuation ranged from approximately 7.0 dB to 9.0 dB at frequencies of 4 KHz and above. A possible explanation for the observed differences in attenuation has been presented.

Because an economic method for preparing pure boron has not been developed, a program was started by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate existing techniques or to develop new methods for preparing the pure element. This report describes investigations directed toward the development of techniques for the preparation of pure boron by fused-salt electrolysis. Only two of the several fused-salt baths tested were satisfactory for the preparation of boron. These baths contained (1) potassium fluoride, lithium fluoride, potassium fluoborate and boron trioxide; and (2) potassium fluoride, potassium chloride, and boron trioxide. Of these two mixtures, the latter was more satisfactory. Elemental boron of from 90- to 95-percent purity and, in isolated cases, as high as 98-percent purity, was prepared from these two types of fused-salt baths. There appeared to be no distinct differences either in the yields or the purity of boron prepared at current densities ranging from 795 to 1,000 amperes per square foot. Current efficiencies were as high as 85 percent.

"INTRODUCTION The domestic production of potash has made rapid strides in the past 4 years. In 1929 the United States produced 109,820 tons of potash-bearing material, equivalent to 61,590 tons of pure potash (K20). In 1933 to this had increased to 331,110 tons, containing 143,378 tons of potash, due chiefly to the development of the potash deposits near Carlsbad, N. Mex. The potash ores of that district occur at a depth of about 1,000 feet and as mined consist of a mixture known as sylvinite containing about 40 parts of sylvite (KC1) and 60 parts of halite (NaCl). By careful mining the extraneous material does not amount to more than 2 or 3 per cent. Such ore was used in the experimental work here reported.The usual chemical method for the recovery of potash from sylvinite, while efficient in the production of pure potassium chloride, requires,expensive equipment and is costly to operate. It occurred to the Bureau of Mines that ore-dressing methods, which have been applied to other nonmetallic minerals, might be adapted for the production of a grade of potash suitable for the fertilizer industry. After preliminary study by the Bureau of Mines showed that ore-dressing treatment was possible the investigation was extended under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the Potash Company of America, and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSAcknowledgment is here given for valuable assistance in the laboratory of R. The heats of formation of oxalic acid and sodium, potassium oxalates, and lithium oxalates were related by solution calorimetry to the heat of formation of (COOH)2.2H20, a value believed to be reliable as reported in the literature. The following heats of formation were determined: (COOH)2(a), -198.1±0.1; (COOH)2(ß), -197.8±0.1; UAW,, -328.7±0.4; Na2C204 -316.2±0.1; K2C204, -321.9±0.2; and K2C204-H20, -393.5±0.2 kcal/mole. The heat of the crystalline transformation (COOH)2(a) ? (COOH)2(ß) was determined to be 0.30±0.02 kcal/mole at 298.15° K.

Helium production and shipment reached new peaks in 1.361. The Bureau of Mines produced 727 million cubic feet, 13 percent more than the 1960 record, and shipped 552 million cubic feet, 16 percent more than the 1960 record. Production exceeded demand for the third successive year, enabling the Bureau of Mines to add 174 million cubic feet to the volume stored underground for future use. At the end of 1961, the total volume of helium in underground storage in the Clifside gasfield was 44-7 million cubic feet. Contracts to implement a long-range helium conservation program were completed with four companies, obligating all the contracting authority of $47.5 million a year made available by the Congress. The four companies will finance, build, and operate helium extraction plants to recover from natural gas an annual average of 3.1 billion cubic feet of helium that would ordinarily be wasted when the helium-bearing natural gas is used for fuel.

Recent field experience however, has indicated that not enough technical information is available on proper installation of the improved shearer-clearer. This Technology News will provide details of the Improvements made to the shearer-clearer and provide guidelines for installing the system. How It Works The shearer-clearer system consists of several strategically-mounted water sprays and one or more passive barriers. The sprays redirect the airflow around the shearer into both a clean and a contaminated split. The sprays confine the contaminated split or dust cloud to the coal face, allowing the shearer operators to remain in the clean split on the walkway

Table 28 and figure 10 show the number of fires and fire injuries for coal preparation plants by state during 1990-1999. Table 28 also shows the risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by state. For coal preparation plants, 91 fires occurred in 1 1 states during 1990- 1999. Twenty-three of those fires caused 25 injuries (the yearly average was 9.1 fires and 2.5 injuries). Ten fires and eight injuries involved contractors. The Ewhr value was 24 1 x 10' hr (Irr = 0.02 l), and the LWD value was 198. Pennsylvania had the most fires (24 fires and 4 injuries), whereas West Virginia (22 fires and 7 injuries) and Kentucky (22 fires and 7 injuries) had the most fire injuries. Among these states, Kentucky had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.025). Table 29, partly illustrated in figure 11, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires decreased during most of the periods (an increase is seen only during the last period). The number of fire injuries show a decrease followed by an increase during the periods, accompanied by a decline in employees' working hours throughout the periods. The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values (see table 29 and figure 11). Tables 30-35 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 12 shows the major variables during 1990-1999. Table 36 shows the fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed and tested a teleoperating system to control a new highwall mining system. A remote operator was provided out-of-sight sensory information and control of coal extraction and haulage equipment. Surface and production testing proved that the teleoperating system supplied the operator with sufficient sensory information to operate the mining system. Details on the teleoperating system provided in this report include (1) sensor selection, (2) a description of the electronic control system, (3) equipment selection and modifications, (4) the positive test results, and (5) recommendations for system improvements.

The underground mining industry is presently using the fluid network analyzer and digital computer to analyze ventilation systems. The availability of the digital computer and ventilation programs to mining companies has escalated its use, permitting the design and modification of new or existing mine ventilation systems to be projected completely and thoroughly with consistent precision. Because the analog computer has been analyzing ventilation systems accurately for many years, a comparison of the analog and digital methods was warranted. This report summarizes a detailed comparison for one mine, based on parallel analyses by the two computer systems.

Since man first mined underground, there has been need for adequate illumination; this need has never been fully supplied. At first, suitable lamps were not available. Gradually they have been developed, but along with that development the need for better and better lamps has continued owing to the following conditions and factors: 1. Increasing hazards from gas and dust ignitions. 2. The speeding of operations with mechanized mining, which necessitates greater visibility. 3. A demand that cleaner coal be loaded, which requires higher levels of illumination. 4. The cost of compensation for injuries that has created a demand for better illumination and safer lamps. Use of better lamps has been retarded by: 1. Prejudice and resistance to change on the part of the workers in some districts. 2. The cost and upkeep of the lamps. 3. The present types of lamps, while a great improvement over the old lamps, do not entirely fulfill the requirements for a safe and efficient light for underground workers.

All pipelines used to transport liquid fuels over coal mines are potentially hazardous; however, this publication deals only with dangers in transporting gasoline. Since transporting gasoline by this method is an established practice, the hazards connected therewith should he recognized by coal-mine operators and pipeline companies so that every known precaution may be used to reduce and keep the hazards to a minimum. The purpose of this paper is to direct the attention of coal-mine operators and employees, pipeline-company officials, and other interested persons to the explosion and fire hazards that arise from seepage of gasoline into underground mines. A hazard is not only presented in an individual mine when gasoline enters underground workings; but, in cases where mines are interconnected, a hazard exists in mach such mine.

Ecuador's real gross domestic product (GDP) increased 6% in 1976 despite persistent shortages of electrical power and essential fuels, which caused factory slow-downs and shutdowns. Petroleum export earnings, which made up more than 50% of total export value in 19716, totaled $565 million, a 9% increase over those of 1975. A new 60,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery at Esmeraldas was scheduled to go on- stream in mid- 1 97 7, operating entirely on Ecuadorean crude. Corpración Estatal Petró1era Ecualtoriana (CEPE) started construction of a 600-kilometer network of product pipelines which was scheduled to be completed in 1977 to coincide with the completion of the refinery.

Underground and strip mining (6,7) produce different hydrologic environments. Many underground mines are below the zone that is completely saturated with water and the mine openings may cause new and continuous contact between sulfurous material and water which flows from the saturated zone to the workings. Strip mines are usually above the zone of continuous saturation and contact between sulfurous material and water is generally restricted to periods of precipitation. A full appreciation of the problem of water pollution caused by drainage from deep mines requires a basic understanding of occurrences and movement of water in the ground and the modes of ground water entrance into mining areas.

Coal-mine officials and those who are preparing to become officials should be familiar with the instruments and devices that are employed rather commonly in and around mines and should know how to use them with safety and efficiency. Among these axe instruments and devices used in determining the pressure, velocity, volume, and certain other conditions of ventilation and in detecting the more common mine gases, such as methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide, or a deficiency of that very important agent, oxygen. Water gages, anemometers, barometers, psychrometers, flame safety lamps, lamp-testing boxes, and methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulphide detectors are described and their use and operation discussed in this paper.
