"Preventative maintenance is a burden for equipment users but a demand from the machine suppliers to ensure performance. Machine availability depends on preventative maintenance being followed.Mining equipment is becoming more and more sophisticated and productive, yet less and less time is available for preventative maintenance. Manufacturers invest in reducing costs, simplifying operating requirements, and lowering maintenance requirements, but it is the users who must invest more heavily in the advanced maintenance systems to keep the units operating.IntroductionPreventative maintenance has been, and still is a key factor in avoiding disturbances in production due to equipment downtime. Manufacturers ask for it in extensive maintenance schedules, check lists, programs, etc. often with a ""threat"" that, if not performed, the machine guarantee will not be valid. Modern mining and construction machinery has become sophisticated, like all other machinery, with elaborate hydraulic, electric and electronic systems and computerized controllers. Maintenance organizations within the mining industry have grown to heavy cost centres just to keep up the availability of the equipment.It is difficult for machine manufacturers to have maintenance programs that suit every user. International suppliers have to deal with different cultures, education levels, environments, organizations, etc. Maintenance programs recommended by manufacturers often do not meet some user's needs while they are ""overkilling"" to others. Preventative maintenance schemes recommendations of what to do, in what frequency, etc.) usually fit mechanical components in the equipment, e.g. wear measurements, crack indications, lubrication, oil changes, etc. But how does one perform preventative maintenance on huge hydraulic systems, electrical and electronic systems and computers? Failures in these systems usually occur without any warning and are more or less impossible to predict. Another difficulty in creating effective preventative maintenance programs for these kinds of systems is the relatively low volume of mining and construction equipment that is produced per year. For example, although Atlas Copco is one of the largest manufacturers in the world of underground blast hole drilling machines, the company still does not produce more than a few hundred drilling jumbos per year. These are made in more than 10 different models, with different systems and components, and very often are custom adapted to the end user's requirements."

Roasting processes are divided into several elementary mechanisms, any of which could be significant or pre-dominant in a particular roast. The elementary processes considered in-elude beat transfer, gas-solid inter-actions with accompanying mass transfer between the bed and furnace atmosphere, vapor phase transport processes in solid-solid interactions, and solid phase diffusion processes. Examples are chosen of processes in which one of these mechanisms pre-dominates and some recently obtained data is presented to support the existence and significance of these mechanisms. Proposals are also made for future research in these areas, and for utilizing the information in the improvement of roaster capacities’ OASTING of ores as a preparative treatment for smelting or leaching has been practiced for so long that its origin has been lost in antiquity, but little has been under-stood of its basic nature until fair-ly recent times. "Hydrometallurgical processes can be exceptionally corrosive. Conditions associated with metal extraction and refining require materials of construction that can withstand process acids and acid chlorides at temperatures up to 90°C (194°F). Process vessels, piping, scrubbers and ducting can be rapidly compromised in these aggressive environments if not designed with care. Design engineers are challenged to find materials that can stand up to hydrometallurgical processes especially for copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt and uranium. This paper will evaluate material solutions to determine which provides attractive economics for initial procurement as well as high durability for reasonable life cycle costs.INTRODUCTIONMining activity in a number of metal ores has been running quite high over the last few years. In particular, those metals that employ acid functional extraction processes such as copper, nickel cobalt and uranium have been particularly active.The world’s largest nickel mine – the massive $4.76 billion Ambatovy nickel mine on the African island nation of Madagascar is nearing completion. When it reaches its full production capacity in 2013, the mine will produce 60,000 MT/yr of nickel and 5600 MT/yr of cobalt. Coming on the heels of the Ambatovy project is the Long Harbour Processing Plant in Newfoundland, Canada which will process the ore from Vale’s Voisey Bay mine in Labrador. Voisey’s Bay is expected to generate more than 50,000 MT/yr of nickel ore when it starts up in 2013. Next up will be the Boleo project in Mexico on the Baja peninsula. When commissioned in 2013, the $858 Million Boleo project is expected to produce 60,000 MT/yr copper, 3100 MT/yr cobalt, 36,000 MT/yr zinc and 100,000 – 250,000 MT/yr manganese carbonate.High nickel alloys and rubber lined steel have been used for decades to design corrosion resistant equipment for mineral processing environments. These materials demonstrate reasonable resistance to corrosion for most environments. Unfortunately, higher nickel alloys are quite expensive. Rubber lined steel is a bit more affordable but requires continuing service over time which ultimately drives up its cost as well. FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) has also been used extensively in mineral processing for tanks, piping and ducting employed in aggressive environments. Today, more and more design engineers and material specifiers are calling for FRP composites for both new and replacement equipment used in the refining and processing of a variety of metal ores."

This paper deals with Hilton Mines' approach to the maintenance of wear items such as truck boxes, shovel buckets, tractor pads, crawler sprocket idlers and the drop-ball. Each will be given a brief. description as to application, design, kind of materials involved and type of wear. The maintenance procedure is then outlined in terms of materials used, preliminary preparation, and welding and machining practices. The service history of new and re-paired items and the relative economics of repair vs replacement will then be presented.

The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy. The construction of electric generating facilities in Canada is expanding at a rapid rate to satisfy the demands of a rising population and new uses for electrical energy. With remaining economic water power resources in the process of development, generation from thermal sources continues to grow. The increase in thermal capability has been somewhat arrested by a de-pressed economy, widening of inter-provincial and state transmission networks and decisions to exploit certain water resources before high capital investment is further in-creased by rising construction costs. The introduction of extra high volt-age transmission lines will further delay thermal generation planning, but in due course, when the effects of restrictive factors have been dissipated, steam-electric generation from fossil fuels will rise to considerable proportions. In time, nuclear sources will contribute a growing share to thermal power, but, it is doubtful if nuclear participation will ever displace conventional fuels for steam rising, unless it can be adapted to operate efficiently for variable outputs in peaking service. Magnesia carbon bricks are commonly used in BOFs and are generally pre-heated before the BOF goes into service. Owing to very stringent emission regulations, the BOF pre-heating process need to be controlled and optimized so that, the emission standards are met. One of the major concerns in organic emissions are its stringent limits on emission rates and total volatile emissions. In the present work, an attempt has been made to integrate CFD and Thermodynamic models to predict the emission rate of volatile organics during the pre-heating process. A one dimensional heat transfer model was developed using visual basic and then integrated with thermodynamics calculations using FactSage 6.4. The parameters that affected organic emissions were the pre heating procedure, gas composition of the burner, heating rate and type of the burner. Typical composition of MgO-C bricks and binder materials were obtained from literature and vendor data sheets. Chemical reactions between organic materials, refractory and burner gasses were considered. The model predictions indicated that certain burner conditions could destroy all organics before it exits the vessel while other conditions needed the use of an after burner at the mouth of the vessel. The model was also able to predict the organic emission rates based on the chosen pre-heating profile. This kind of predictive model will be very useful for the steel industry and enable them to justify permit limit applications and stick to the limits by fine tuning their pre-heating process.

In his Budget Speech on March 31, 1 977, the Honourable Donald S. Macdonald expressed concern about the financing of investments through new equity issues. He mentioned the need to render more attractive participation in the equity market by investors in all in come brackets. One of the measures introduced in the budget to accomplish this goal is the proposal to increase the dividend gross-up and tax credit in respect of most dividends received by an individual from Canadian companies. The following comments and tables serve to illustrate the impact of this particular proposal.

"The Pine Point area is on the south shore of Great Slave Lake, 510 air miles north of Edmonton and J JO miles south of Yellowknife, N.W.T. The occurrence there of lead and zinc was reported in J 899 by R. Bell (5) of the Geological Survey of Canada, and in the following years several claims were staked and some prospecting was done. In 1928 Atlas Exploration Co. took over the property containing the discovery occurrences. In 1929 The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd. (""Cominco"") and Ventures Ltd. participated with Atlas in forming the Northern Lead-Zinc Co., which, under the direction of J. M. Bell, carried out 24,499 feet of drilling in the discovery and surrounding areas. Two shafts and many surface pits were also sunk. This work showed that the discovery deposits contain about 500,000 tons of lead-zinc ore, but no new orebody was found.In 1936 D. F. Kidd (11) drew attention to the highly significant space relations between the base-metal discoveries at Pine Point and the projections of certain major Precambrian faults mapped earlier by C. H. Stockwell. Geological work by Cominco in 1940 and subsequent years suggested the presence of mineable deposits within a belt of land including part of the area of earlier field work and extending far beyond it. Between 1946 and 1954 exploration financed by Cominco and Ventures Ltd. included 182,950 feet of diamond drilling, 383 feet of sinking, and 240 feet of drifting, raising, and crosscutting. This work was successful in finding substantial quantities of new ore in places where bedrock is completely concealed.The topography is one of low relief, characterized in many places by swampy muskeg and shallow, marl-bottomed ponds. The area where ore has been found is generally higher ground which, though not well drained, is comparatively dry. It is also marked by raised beaches and a few sand dunes overgrown by small spruce and pine. Bedrock is generally overlain by a variable thickness of hard, glacial boulder clay. This in turn is covered by silt, sand, and gravel, probably deposited from the waters of Great Slave Lake, which formerly extended many miles beyond its present southern shore."

The formation, evolution and classification of peat bogs is discussed. Factors resulting in the internal and external morphological changes in a bog are described. The fibrous, absorptive and sterile properties of peat moss account for its widespread use in horticulture and related fields. These properties also account for its usefulness as a binder in pelletizing, as an insulating material in bat tons and in panel construction. Peat, the humijied product of peat moss is used in market gardening and sod growing. It is utilized in Europe as fuel. It is a source of activated carbon and gas. Potentially peat can be used to produce waxes, resins, tannins, cellulose, hemicellu/ ose, humic acids, lignin and hymatomelanic acid. At present other cheaper sources are available.

Introduction Considerable attention has of late been attracted to the area surrounding Nimpkish lake, on northern Vancouver island, by the discovery of important rich copper deposits. In less than two years some 200 mineral claims have been staked in a small area, and at least two groups have very promising surface showings. During the summer of 1929, the writer spent one month investigating the general geology and mineral deposits of the region, and, although no detailed work has as yet been done in the field or in the laboratory, the importance of the mineral discoveries and the lack of geological information available to the public warrants a preliminary paper on the district. The district is, from a mining viewpoint, very accessible. Boats from Vancouver call at Englewood, in Beaver cove, four times a week. From Englewood, a first-class logging railway, operated by the Wood, .English Company, extends to the northeast corner of Nimpkish lake. The fifteen-mile trip from the north to the south end of the lake is made by boat, two tugs being maintained by the logging company. The whole trip from Englewood can easily be made in one day. The known mineral deposits lie immediately east of the southern part of the lake, four miles or less from the shore. A fair trail, four miles ? long, leads from the lake to the Nimpkish Copper group. Apart from this trail and an old logging railway grade which follows the east side of Klaanch river for several miles, no trails exist on the southeast side of the lake.

A thermo-chemical model of the Peirce-Smith copper converter in blowing the copper stage has been developed to predict the molten temperature. The key assumption of the model was that white metal and gas phases in the converter were in thermal and chemical equilibrium. In this model, the chemical reaction of white metal and oxygen was accomplished completely. So long as sulfur existed in the bath, the generation of Cu2O was frozen. The reaction rate was considered to be constant and controlled by the reacted sulfur. The converter temperature was calculated by heat balances over time. The model was validated by a detailed comparison with measured industrial data. A good agreement was obtained. The converter temperature depended on process parameters such as oxygen efficiency, molten emissivity and oxygen enrichment.

Large production shafts can be successfully sunk through the ubiquitous Blairmore formation of southern Saskatchewan by employing the freezing process and by the installation of a cast iron tubbing lining. Although the freezing technique for shaft sinking and the use of cast iron tubbing to preserve the shaft are new to the North American continent, these procedures have been employed in Europe for the past eighty years. More than 200 shafts, covering a wide variety of ground conditions, have been sunk by the freezing process, and most of these have been lined with cast iron tubbing. The No. 1 shaft of International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan, comprises the first major example in Canada of the employment of European methods to overcome extremely difficult ground conditions. The Lake Cinch deposit occurs in the Tazin gneisses on the footwall side of the Black Bay fault. Ore is localized by two faults, the Main Ore fault and the Cracking-stone River fault, occurring in shoots along the former and on tension fractures between the two faults. Faulting leading to the localization of the deposit is analyzed in detail and tied into the regional pattern. Pitchblende, the chief radioactive mineral, is investigated by X-ray and found to be of very small particle size. The relation-ships of U, Fe and Mn in the ore are established quantitatively, and Fe is found to bear a catalytic relation to U. The deposit is classed as belonging to Lindgren's mesothermal class. Mineralization is attributed to carbonate solutions, and the uranium is believed to have been trans-ported in the hexavalent state as the uranyl tricarbonate ion; analogy is drawn to a recently developed hydro-metallurgical technique for the production of uranium dioxide. This paper reports bulk flotation characteristics of a pyritic gold ore sample from the Barry District, Quebec using isopropyl and amyl xanthates. The ore sample was highly floatable with particles showing tendencies for self-aggregation that was most apparent in the first stage of flotation. A possible reason for this is discussed. The gold concentrate grade-recovery performance with respect to the particle size is presented for the rougher-scavengers as well as for the cleaners. The effects of copper sulphate as an activator, fuel oil and NaSH as a sulphidising agent are discussed along with the recovery by size behaviour.

Rock bolts have been used since long to enhance the shear strength response of jointed rocks in civil and mining engineering structures. However, the assessment of strength response of a rock mass reinforced with rock bolts remains an unresolved problem till date. In the present article, an attempt has been made to study, through physical model tests, the shear strength enhancement of a blocky mass due to provision of passive rock bolts. Direct shear tests were conducted on large specimens of size 750 mm x 750 mm x 900 mm of rock mass under a normal stress varying from 0 to 2.0 MPa. Concrete was used as a model material to simulate intact rock and, elemental blocks of size 150 mm x 150 mm x 150 mm were used to form the mass specimens. Steel bolts of 6 mm diameter with 2 mm thick grout were used to reinforce the mass. Three different configurations of bolts were adopted. Observations were made on shear stress, horizontal shear displacement, and dilation during the tests. Effect of normal stress and reinforcement on peak shear stress and shear stiffness was studied. It is observed that the rock bolts enhance the shear strength of the mass by preventing sliding along the shearing plane, and by inducing additional normal stress due to tension mobilized in the bolts. The rock mass, therefore, becomes stronger due to the high degree of interlocking produced by the bolts. Shear strength of the mass increases with increasing numbers of bolts. In the case of reinforced mass, the enhancement in shear strength due to provision of bolts decreases with an increase in normal stress. The provision of bolts improves the cohesion of joints substantially. The effect on friction angle is low. The shear strength enhancement depends on the area of the bolts, spacing of the joints, spacing between the bolts and the cohesion of the intact material. A correlation has been established using which the enhancement in shear strength due to the provision of bolts can be assessed.

"Metal-coated thermoplastic parts find more and more functional and aesthetic applications in the interior and exterior of cars. The vapor-deposited or electroplated coatings are usually composed of a plurality of nickel- and chromium-containing layers, which are applied to copper-containing carrier layers on the polymers. Previously, recycling processes are mainly focussed at the recovery or thermal utilization of the plastics. Targeted and selective recycling of the metallic coatings is usually not carried out. Together with several SME, BTU developed a process, in which a complete and separate recovery of all components in high purity is possible with biotechnological methods. The bioleaching is carried out with iron and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, especially Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. The copper-containing layers are dissolved in the solution; chromium- and nickel-containing particles are precipitated as solids. After the bioleaching, a mechanical separation of the individual metal-containing components and their separate workup are carried out. End-products are metallic copper, a nickel- and chromium-containing solid and the cleaned plastics. The bioleaching ensures a high purity of the end products. Through the use of bacteria, which are also found in nature, the process is environmentally friendly. Compared to chemical leaching using inorganic acids, considerably shorter leaching times can be achieved. In addition to the optimization of the leaching process, the R/D-project also includes the development and testing of the apparatus technology.INTRODUCTION The material complexity of many end-user products has increased in recent years, especially in the fields of electrical appliances, vehicle technology and medical technology. However, the demands on functionality, safety, comfort and energy efficiency still play a greater role in product design as factors such as sustainability and usability. For example, if a car still holds more than 70% of steel in the 1980s, a vehicle nowadays includes a larger proportion of a variety of difficultly separable plastics and composite materials, as well as complex metal composites. This relates in particular to composites made from such different materials as metals and plastics. The processing and recovery of the components of those complex material mixtures is difficult for recycling companies."

The dramatic fluctuation in metal and energy prices in the last few years is causing mining companies to consider alternative analytical methods for mine design and valuation. The goal is to improve insight into unforeseen changes in the economic and project environment and to design projects that take advantage of management's ability to respond to these changes. Such flexibly managed projects will contain value that cannot be measured using traditional engineering economic approaches, further motivating the used of alternative, modern valuation methods. This paper considers the valuation of an uneconomic low-grade resource at an open pit gold mine using two of the most popular modern valuation methods, Dynamic Discounted Cash Flow and Real Options. Our analysis demonstrates that the conventional valuation method may incorrectly represent the value and risk attached to mining this type of resource because it is unable to recognize management's ability to respond to future events in a manner that minimizes losses and exploits advantageous business conditions. The results of this paper highlight the importance of recognizing flexibility and business uncertainty in both mine design and valuation.

High strength AA7068 (Al - 7.88 wt.% Zn - 2.68 wt.% Mg - 2.07 wt.% Cu) aluminum alloy strip was successfully fabricated by horizontal-type twin roll casting. A simulation technique was used to obtain the range of casting conditions for fabricating strip without defects. The cast strip with thickness of about 5 mm was hot rolled, intermediate annealed, cold rolled to final thickness and subsequently annealed at various temperatures. Tensile properties of annealed and the aged specimens were evaluated at ambient temperature. Tensile strength and elongation of the annealed sheet are about 365 MPa and 28%, respectively. Also, the tensile and yield strength after the aging at paint baking condition (180 °C x 0.5 h) are 586 MPa and 551 MPa, respectively. Therefore, it is expected to show good formability prior to press or stamping and also provide high dent resistance after paint baking treatment.

"The Luscar Mine is a metallurgical coal mine located in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, 41 km southeast of Hinton, Alberta. The mine is operated by Cardinal River Coals Ltd., a 50/50 joint venture between Luscar Ltd. and Consolidation Coal Company of Canada. The mine produces a high quality medium volatile metallurgical coal which is sold on the export market principally to Japan and South Korea. Operations consist of a surface mine with capacity to produce 3.0 million tonnes per year and an underground mine which is currently mothballed due to market conditions.GeologyBedrock units within the Luscar minesite are of Devonian to Upper Cretaceous age. The commercial coal measures in the area are, however, confined within the Lower Luscar Formation. The Luscar Formation consists of a 460-metre thick sequence of interbedded sandstones, shales and coal seams. The sequence is primarily deltaic in origin, and is bounded to the north and south at the Luscar mine by tectonically induced thrust faulting.The only mineable coal seam at Luscar is referred to locally as the Jewel seam. Average thickness of this coal measure is usually 10.5 m to 14 m, although in some areas folding and faulting has produced ""pods"" of coal from 15 m to over 40 m thick while in others the structural deformation has thinned the coal to 3.0 m to 4.6 m. Waste within the Jewel seam seldom exceeds a metre of shale, carbonaceous shale or infrequent sandstone stringers.Reserves and Coal QualityProven surface mineable reserves, based on pit scheduling through 1996, are 50.8 million raw tonnes. An additional 19.2 million raw tonnes are contained in possible extensions to the present planned operations. These surface mineable reserves are considered to be those reserves within 155 m of the surface. Underground reserves, located within 770 m of the surface show that 25.7 million raw tonnes have been proven to date in additon to 27 .5 million indicated and 260 miIJion inferred.Coal specification at Luscar Mine is as follows:"
