Geological modelling is a crucial preparatory stage to most facets of the mine planning of an orebody. The process of modelling involves skilled geological interpretation. Recent innovations in computer software and graphics hardware provide many tools which can be used to dramatically improve on manual methods of interpreting orebody data. Geological interpretation can be carried out quickly to produce accurate block models for many orebody attributes, such as grades, and these models can be easily updated locally as exploration and mine development data become available. The speed of the modelling process coupled with the mass storage capabilities of the computer now allows geologists to optimise the geological model or carry more than one model through to the mine planning phase.

ecent work on decoppering lead is reviewed; CuS is formed rapidly even from dilute solutions of copper in lead. he mechanism of decoppering is discussed, and an explanation for the retention of metals such as silver in lead is dvanced. As decoppering tin appears to be an analogous process, the Cu-Sn-S system is studied at 300¦C. CuS, hich is not, an equilibrium product, is found in decoppering drosses. In the removal of nickel from lead, Ni3pb2S2 formed; preliminary measurements show the equilibrium nickel content to be greater than that obtained by tirring in sulphur. Decoppering bismuth is thermodynamically favoured, but is complicated by the occurrence of uBiS2. The Cu-Pb-S system is the only one of the four studied where the equilibrium can be calculated simply, as ' resence of ternary sulphide or other phases invalidates calculations based on binary data.

Silver deposits, in which silver forms at least fifty percent of the value of the ore, are abundant and large on the east side of the Pacific and are absent in the western Pacific. To determine if this uneven distribution is related to features of consuming plate tectonic boundaries which dominate the metallogeny of the Pacific Rim, the variation of Ag/Au in porphyry copper deposits was used to estimate the relative silver content of magma generated in subduction zones. Porphyry copper provinces with high Ag/Au occur in regions of the eastern Pacific where silver deposits are abundant, suggesting that the distribution of silver deposits is controlled by the relative abun- dance of silver in subducted ocean crust. Ocean crust being subducted in the eastern Pacific is mostly less than 50 million years old in contrast to most ocean crust in the western Pacific which is much older. Enrich- ment of silver in young ocean crust at spread- ing centers may reflect metallogenetic evolution over geologic time. Silver may be transported to the surface in volcanic rocks, and deposits are common where felsic varieties are abundant. The high ,solubility of silver in natural waters provides a natural storage mechanism for silver weath- ered from these rocks and ultimately circulated in near-surface hydrothermal systems where many silver deposits form. The regional distribution of silver deposits is not influenced by discoverability, vertical metal zoning, or regional tectonic style. The effect of igneous differentiation is unclear.

Until 1980 copper, lead and zinc sulphide slurries have been success- fully dewatered for rail and sea transport for many years at the Rose- bery site of North Broken Hill Holdings Ltd. utilizing conventional vacuum disc filtration systems. An upgrading and mill expansion program completed in 1981, which also permitted the introduction of ore streams changes, had resulted in difficulties dewatering copper and lead sulphide slurries to comply with transportable moisture limits. Following an extensive investigation which included both laboratory and pilot plant testing a program was commenced to replace the 2 vacuum disc filtration systems with 2 pressure filtration systems for use on copper and lead slurry dewatering and also to retain other existing vacuum disc filters as standby. An analysis of mill operations performance resulted in slurry storage tanks with a capacity equivalent to 20 hours of normal production being incorporated into the project. The pressure filters are mounted above the concentrate stock- piles. A sealed sloping floor incorporating launders is used to prevent any accidental contamination of the concentrate from pipe leakages, spillage, or from water hoses used for clean up purposes around the area. The project was completed in 1985 and operating performance has been better than that predicted from testwork. Equipment availability at 95076 together with the slurry storage capacity provided results in minimal requirement for the standby vacuum filtration system. Some typical operating results are given.

The Shamrock Gold Mine has been brought from exploration to production within three years. Mining of the openpit is scheduled for June 1990 with commissioning in April of the 180 000 TPA carbon-in-pulp mill on old tailings and rock dumps. The development of a small openpit containing 344 000 tonnes at 3.6 g/t Au in a complex sulphide ore has required extensive metallurgical testwork to optimise recovery, and ensure profitability. The project has been undertaken in a changing economic climate, with increasing restrictive legislation. The decision to mine was further complicated by the escalating cost of installing a heap leach operation in South East Queensland. Decreasing costs of consumables, in particular sodium cyanide, and the opportunity to purchase a suitable transportable mill at a reasonable price made the project robustly viable as a CIP operation.

The Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator (HVCCC) Limited is the primary planning organisation responsible for the export of coal through the Port of Newcastle, Australia. HVCCC stakeholders include producers (mining companies), rail track owners, above rail operators, and terminal operators. The HVCCC is tasked with coordinating the activities of all the corresponding parts of the coal export supply chain so as to maximise the system efficiency. The HVCCC also has a forward looking planning role: with demand for coal expected to double in the next decade, strategic capacity planning is a core activity for the HVCCC. Optimisation and simulation models are key aids in such activity. They are used to suggest and evaluate infrastructure expansions and operating policy changes. These models require input data in the form of shipping stems, which are arrival streams of ships at the port, together with their cargo types and composition, and date and time of arrival.Although everyone is familiar with the expression ægarbage in equals garbage outÆ, relatively little research is dedicated to the issues surrounding input data generation. In this research we seek to redress this, and have developed a method for generating high quality shipping data. Shipping stems used as input should be realistic, reflecting key characteristics of historical patterns. They should accurately represent future demand scenarios. Yet they should also have controllable parameters that can be used to test what-if scenarios, such as are required by the HVCCC to answer questions about future infrastructure or operational plans.Here we review our process for achieving this, and give a case study analysing the effects of different shipping stems on the performance of the coal chain, as measured by a capacity assessment tool. The latter is an optimisation model that takes shipping stem and infrastructure data as input, and calculates key supply chain performance metrics. The potential benefits of alternative demand management strategies are analysed by measuring the performance of the coal chain given different shipping stems obtained via the stem generatorÆs controllable parameters.

The Minerals Education Australia program is offering a tertiary learning environment for the global mining industry. The Minerals Council of Australia has instigated this initiative, which is run by the Minerals Tertiary Education Council. The program is a pioneering partnership between the Australian minerals industry, Australian governments and key Australian universities. It is designed to deliver key undergraduate and postgraduate courses for tomorrowÆs minerals industry professionals in the fields of geoscience, mining and minerals engineering and metallurgy. The flagship course for geoscience professionals is the G3 Masters program. The increasing market requirements regarding the quality of products, the enhanced predictability from detailed mine planning, the need for process consolidation and upgrading require continuous investigation on the characteristics of different ore types to be concentrated. This paper addresses the mineralogical and technological characterisation of several itabirite iron ore types and the influence of the composition and mineralogical associations on desliming and flotation. Pellet feed quality and the influence on the major performance indicators, such as weight recovery of slimes, selectivity index, metallurgical recovery, flotation kinetics of iron minerals and gangue is also emphasised. The investigation resulted in a classification of iron ores according to their mineralogical composition, morphology of the crystals, and/or texture and microstructure of mineral particles with respect to desliming and flotation performances.

The integration of iron rejection as hematite with the Sherritt two-stage zinc pressure leach process has been investigated on the laboratory scale. The two-stage pressure leach process is applicable for a greenfield zinc plant, or for replacement of the conventional roast-leach circuit in an existing zinc plant. An excess of zinc concentrate is used to accomplish acid neutralisation in the first stage of pressure leaching, and the residual concentrate in the first stage residue is treated with an excess of acid solution in the second stage of pressure leaching to yield high zinc extraction. Integration of hematite precipitation with this process allows for the potential sale of the iron residue, greatly decreasing the residue disposal problem. Two flowsheets containing the desirable features of both of these processes are described in this paper, along with laboratory Results.

The Argyle Diamond Mine came on stream late in 1985 as the world's largest diamond producer in terms of carat output. The design of the process plant, including the heavy medium separation (HMS) facility which provides the initial stages for separation of diamonds from gangue, evolved over a lengthy period of feasibility study and site investigation into the final form described in this paper. The commissioning was carefully planned and co-ordinated, and culminated successfully with handover of the plant on schedule and within budget. Most exploratory drilling in the N.S.W. coal fields has been conducted using convent- ional diamond drill rigs of modern design, us- ually truck or trailer mounted. Conventional diamond drill rigs have also been used exten- sively by the Queensland Department of Mines for coal exploration. However almost all of the exploratory drilling of surface mine coal prospects throughout Queensland has been conducted using rotary rigs typified by the Mayhew 1000 truck mounted unit. The rotary rig has proved capable of both rapid non-core drilling and core drilling with high core recoveries when modern core barrels have been used by experienced drillers. For deep or continuous core drilling, wire-line equipment is now in general use. Both wire-line and conventional coring is effected using stationary split inner tube barrels, for minimum core disturbance, maximum core recovery, ease and accuracy of logging and sub-sectional sampling. Diamond core bits are generally required in N.S.W., with water circu- lation. In Queensland, the generally softer coal measures strata can be successfully cored using tungsten carbide bits and air circulation is the preferred method where possible.

A method is proposed for the analysis of tin in cassiterite ores. Tin is volatilised by heating with ammonium iodide. The tin iodide so formed is extracted with hydrochloric acid and the concentration is measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy using an air-hydrogen flame.It is considered that a more efficient extraction of tin and faster reproducible results are obtained than by any other known method.

An efficient filtration plant can be designed only from an adequate knowledge of the filtration characteristics of the material to be handled; if these characteristics can be expressed in the form of an equation the work of design is simplified immensely. The literature of the subject contains numerous equations which have been developed by various workers to express their results, usually obtained from a 'Very limited class of material, and from moderately thick pulps. Such expressions have been found quite unsuited for use in the case of thin, very free filtering pulps.In 1926, Underwood put forward an equation having a general for m, and which, he was able to show, provided a satisfactory expression of the data obtained and published by a large number of earlier workers. This equation has been found a very satisfactory and useful tool for the study of a variety of filtration problems. A numerical model of the spontaneous combustion of coal has been developed and is being used to investigate the nature of self-heating in underground coal mines. Results to date confirm the complexity of the self-heating reaction in coal and illustrate the impact of the factors such as the coal reactivity, mass and airflow through the coal pile. Subtle differences in the chemical, physical and environmental conditions and make a significant difference in the development of a high temperature self-heating or a low temperature benign condition, the subtlety escaping normal underground observations. Additional work is planned to investigate the thresholds for such factors in the development of spontaneous combustion and it the implications for detection by gaseous Products.

Estimation of operating costs in the nickel production industry requires a detailed analysis of material flows from mine to smelter to refinery. Despite the small number of nickel producers compared to other base metals, the existence of two very different ore types (sulphide and laterite) and a wide variety of mining and processing technologies make the identification of these flows of critical importance if an accurate global picture is to be obtained. Smelting and refining processes in nickel metallurgy have evolved with a high degree of adaptation to specific operating conditions in different locations. Overall costs are calculated by combining individual cost elements for each unit in production chains from mine to saleable metal product. The average cost of western world primary nickel production in 1995 was US$2.07/lb ($4560/tonne). Average operating costs remained virtually unchanged in the three years to 1995 after an 8.5 per cent fall in 1993, but a 3.9 per cent increase to $2.15/lb is expected for 1996. A major factor in this rise results from the lower prices of copper and cobalt this year, reducing the by-product credits available to major producers.

Depletion of shallow ore reserves is forcing the South African gold mining industry to exploit reefs at ever-increasing depths. By 2010 around 30 per cent of South African gold production probably will come from depths greater than 3 km (Johnson and Schweitzer, 1996). At such depths, virgin stresses will rise significantly, producing complex rock engineering problems (Malan and Basson, 1998). Concern over structural instability at depth has led planners to seek a technology capable of ædetection of geological structures with a displacement of 2 m or greater (or as appropriate to the mining technique) 200 m ahead of mining at an acceptable costÆ. Borehole radar probably is such a technology. Cover holes are drilled routinely ahead of development. The evaluation of its candidacy for a tactical role in ultra-deep gold mining dependsùamong other thingsùupon establishing the electromagnetic characteristics of the environment hosting significant gold reefs. The Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) is one such reef. Recent borehole radar field trials, presented here, suggest that the VCRÆs overburden is a remarkably translucent, clutter-free dielectric with a Q of ~35 and that the VCR itself is the dominant radar reflector.

In the retreatment of an old tailing dump containing five per cent of lead principally as lead sulphate, the lead sulphate was floated with liquid Aerofloat reagent after sulphidising with phosphorous pentasulphide in an acid circuit. A zinc middling product was removed by flotation before recovering the lead. Concentrate products were sundried in surface dams.INTRODUCTIONDuring the period between 1917 and 1928 the Junction North Broken Hill Mine N.L. deposited several tailing dumps on its leases, which were acquired by North Broken Hill Ltd.in 1931. One of these dumps lay alongside a main road close to a residential area. The high metal prices prevailing in the post-war years (1945 onwards) provided a strong incentive for retreating this dump and transferring it to a less objectionable site.SAMPLING AND TESTINGIn 1946 a sampling and testing campaign was instituted which culminated in 1949 in a decision being made to erect a tailing retreatment plant adjacent to the dump.The dump was sampled with a 3 in. post hole auger using extension lengths of -! in. pipe for drilling to 30 ft. The dump material was fine and moist and core recovery was excellent. Hole depths ranged from 14 ft. to 30 ft., with an average dump depth of 20 ft.Individual samples were prepared from successive 9 ft.lengths of core and each sample thus obtained was, submitted for sizing and assay.The sampling showed that the dump contained approximately 380,000 tons of fine tailing assaying:

The advantages of rapid and accurate analyses are becoming appreciated in many industries today and have resulted in a great increase in the number of samples received by their laboratories. This has caused some firms to consider the installation of one or more of the instruments available for analytical chemistry. In this country there are relatively few people with experience of instrumental methods and it is difficult for a firm considering the installation of such equipment to assess the advantages which instruments may give them, and to decide which instruments, if any, will be of most use to them. The object of this paper is to give a brief survey of instrumental methods in the field of inorganic analysis. Instrumental methods of analysis have numerous advantages when used correctly. They enable extremely rapid analyses to be made in many cases, e.g., analysis of refined lead by purely chemical means takes about two days whereas spectographically the analysis can be completed in approximately one and a half hours. The accuracy ofinstrumental methods, generally between 1 and 5%, is higher than most chemical methods for small percentages of impurities. Furthermore, if the instrument can be calibrated against absolute standards the errors are usually random and not biased to one side of the correct result. The sensitivity is high, enabling in many cases the detection and determination of smaller percentages than can be detected chemically. This high sensitivity enables and, in some cases, requires the use of very small samples, and results in considerable savings in reagents, allowing the analysis of considerably more samples without undue loss...

A major problem in the continuous casting of aluminium killed strip steel is the incidence of black and grey lines in the strip surface caused by the alumina inclusions. One place for limiting the number of alumina inclusions is by providing favourable fluid flow conditions in the ladle so that the inclusions float out to the surface or adhere to the ladle wall. In laboratory equipment 20 kg of steel was melted in an alumina crucible of 14 cm diameter in an induction furnace. Deoxidation was carried out while the melt was constantly stirred by argon bubbling. Bubble frequencies were measured at the lance tip using a microphone technique. High speed cine photo- graphy was incorporated to measure melt top surface velocities. Experimental results indicate that the rate of removal of inclusions is a function of both the gas input and the power input. However due to unfavourable surface area to volume ratio, reoxidation of the melt took place. Some other experimental difficulties in working at high temperatures are also discussed such as lance design, melting arrangement and sampling techniques.

This paper addresses; land use, rehabilitation and the State/Federal regulatory process, in light of Australia signing various international conventions and agreements in the area of environmental protection. The conventions on biological diversity, climate change and the implications of the Rio and Agenda 21 declarations are examined. The implementation of these initiatives through the Inter-Governmental Agreement on the Environment, and through legistlative mechanisms at Federal and State level is explored.Particular attention is given to the biodiversity strategy in context of the need to integrate economic aspirations and environmental concerns as a basis for sustsainable development. The paper concludes with a brief comparison of the major approval processes in each State, relating to mining environmental issues.
