Sample sizing in the iron ore industry requires significant manual effort to collect, transport, and sieve the samples as well as record, process and report the data. Efforts have been made to automate this process, which essentially emulate the manual process, except that a person is replaced by a robot. Even in these cells, the sieving and sizing operation consumes a significant proportion of robot time. The proposed doubling of production from AustraliaÆs iron ore mines over the next five years will place increasing pressure on sample sizing and interest is increasing in alternative automated methods. One such method is the adaptation of computer vision technology which has been successfully introduced into the mining industry in a range of applications including feed size distribution to SAG mills and oversize detection from screening stations. The limitation of this technology is that only the top surface is visible and this is used as an indicator of total size distribution. Obviously in a sample plant, where 100 per cent of the sample must be measured for acceptable quality assurance, this approach is unacceptable. In order to capture 100 per cent of the sample using computer vision technology a monolayer must be formed either by spreading the sample across a moving surface, such as a conveyor or vibrating platform, and passing this under a camera. This will become a æsurgingÆ load which presents specific problems for some types of computer vision systems, namely those relying on a 2D approach. In this paper a 3D computer vision technology will be described which overcomes the problems associated with measuring particle size in a monolayer and experimental results will be presented which demonstrate its effectiveness for lump and fine iron ore sample size measurement.

Macroscopic and microscopic studies of the outburst-prone Gemini Coal (Bowen Basin) showed that outbursts were associated with a localized inertinite-rich ply. Previous studies of the Gemini Coal had shown a general relationship between desorption rate, regarded as a good measure of outburst proneness, and inertinite content of coal samples.Desorption rates increased with increasing inertinite content and were highest for inertodetrinite-rich samples. These results suggest that inertinite content and composition play a significant role in outbursting and may be useful in identifying outburst-prone coals, which could be confirmed by desorption measurements.Consequently outburst-prone areas in the Upper Permian coal measures ofthe Sydney, Gunnedah and Bowen Basins have been defined using a combination ofthe parameters, inertinite content, depth ofcover and coal rank. In the Upper Permian, inertinite-rich coals are confined mainly to the top of the coal measures, except in the Sydney and Gunnedah Basins where an inertinite-rich interval (Bayswater Coal and correlatives) is also present towards the base of these measures. Only a small area ofthe central Sydney Basin, butmuch ofthe north-eastern and north-central part of the exposed Bowen Basin is considered outburst prone on the basis of these parameters.The most outburst-prone inertodetrinite-rich lithologies have a patchy and unpredictable distribution in the top of the Upper Permian coal measures. They can be defined only by sampling and petrographic analysis at the subsection level.

The Latrobe Valley brown coal deposits are one of Australia's major energy resources with measured and indicated reserves amounting to some 162 billion tonnes. Economically recoverable reserves are estimated at some 65 billion tonnes, 47 billion tonnes of which are classified as available for mining (VBCC (1983)). These deposits contain one of the lowest grade fuels used anywhere in the world. Typical Net Wet Specific Energy values range from 6 to 9 MJ/kg. Despite the low energy value of the raw coal, the Latrobe Valley deposits represent approximately 90% of Victoria's indigenous non-renewable energy resources. Utilisation of this vast primary energy resource has been a key factor in the economic development of Victoria.

An investigation into different aspects of importance in the understanding of explosibility of hybrid mixtures of coal dust, air and gases potentially found within mine workings through a comprehensive laboratory program of explosibility tests was conducted. Plotting of test results revealed that conditions of potential explosibility could be described using two dimensional flammability limit surfaces- for coal dust/oxygen; methane/oxygen; and coal dust/methane mixtures. From these plots, the three dimensional flammability envelopes defining the explosibility of the coal dust/methane/oxygen mixtures can be defined and illustrated for a coal sample. The surfaces of the three dimensional envelope describe limits which separate inert mixtures of coal dust and methane at varying oxygen levels from those concentrations which are ignitable under defined conditions. It is considered appropriate to generalise that the geometric shapes of these limit regions are applicable to all type classifications of coal dust. There are practical applications of these results to the underground environment.The action of free radical initiators in the propagation of a methane gas explosion was examined for its applicability to the flammability of coal dust/gas/air mixtures. The oxides of nitrogen or NO x radicals have influence upon the lean limits of flammability of hybrid mixtures and this is illustrated by use of three dimensional coordinate geometry. Gases can be introduced to the underground environment through the exhaust gases of diesel equipment. It is concluded that radical species can substantially increase the flammability of gas and dust flames and as a consequence raise risk of mine atmosphere explosibility.

Coal mining in the Pittsburgh coal seam, in the eastern United States, began in the late-1700s. Since that time numerous mining technologies have been used throughout the basin. Environmental concerns, particularly mine discharge quality, have only been considered since the early-1970s. During the last 20 years, many of the larger underground mines have closed and are now either flooding or already flooded. In order to understand the consequences and potential future effects of this flooding, mine mapping of the basin has been compiled utilising a geographic information system (GIS) with an emphasis on locating barrier pillars between mines. Mine flooding has been monitored at numerous sites utilising pressure transducers and data loggers. These data have been combined with historical data from mining companies and structure contour maps to yield chronological flooding maps of the basin from 1980 to present. Utilising these maps and the indicated flooding rates, future discharge locations have been identified along with estimates of when these discharges are likely to occur. Related work has identified barrier pillar hydraulic conductivities and vertical infiltration rates as a function of overburden thickness. All of this information has been integrated into a groundwater flow model that simulates mine flooding. This model is useful in defining mine to mine interactions as the various mines fill with water, and the testing of various flooding scenarios. The model will be used in evaluating mine discharge rates and evaluating the options for regional mine drainage treatment.

Coal Mining in India had been confined in the past primarily to two or three coalfields. Unscientific mining has led to huge degradation of land including massive subsidence of strata and disturbances of water tables to a wide extent. This has caused problems not only in flooding of mines from surface water but also in further planning of the surface drainage for current mining activities. Now, therefore, surface hydrology and land-use potentialities of the area have been endangered inflicting severe damage to the overall environment and ecology of the area. The paper Discusses certain investigative aspects of the problems highlighted as above in one of the coalfields, and encompasses mainly the following areas : 1) Quantitative estimation of the damage already done to the natural surface drainage system. For this purpose damage to topography and drainage for the last fifty years have been made out through the aerial photographs and topographic map sheets 2) Analysis and comparison of different states of such photographs are carried through to indicate the extent of damage to the hydrological conditions inducing undesirable changes in its land-use pattern. Based on the analysis, concrete suggestions are made to restore the water drainage system which will be most suitable for future mining in the area containing high grade coal. The design and planning of the drainage system is based on the total system approach including the cost benefit analysis as well as hydrological considerations.

This paper deals briefly with the geology and mineralisation of the Ediacara Mineral Field, which is located about 300 miles north of Adelaide in the Mount James Range.The field was discovered sane time prior to 1872. Total recorded production for the field amounts to a few hundred tons of lead and 36 tons of copper. Re-listing of the field during 1961-62 led to its classification as a Mississippi Valley type deposit. Diamond drilling has partly outlined the spread of mineralisation and confirmed its stratiform distribution,Sources for the metals are suggested and various possible mechanisms. of deposition are described.

"In some lode-style gold deposits the geological (lithological) uncertainty may have similar economic significance as the grade uncertainty. In the absence of precise knowledge of the deposit geology, geological models of these types of deposits that are used to constrain spatially the estimated (or simulated) grade values may influence significantly the contained metal. Methods for assessing geological uncertainty quantitatively are rarely considered due to their perceived inability to consider exhaustive geological interpretations, and resulting models that often appear geologically unrealistic. Furthermore, should the lodes have been subjected to folding, or where the mineralisation continuity does not follow a planar orientation along strike or down dip, standard methods of variography and interpolation using linear vectors in space often do not provide a good representation of continuity. An alternative approach is to relate spatial samples from adjacent drill holes using an unfolding plane.The paper demonstrates conditional simulation of the geometry and gold grades of a folded lode-style deposit where:simulation of lode geometry considers explicitly the geologistÆs interpretation, andsimulation of gold grade values that consider explicitly the folded nature of the lodes.The results are contrasted to the traditional approach of linear vectors in real space for a single lode interpretation.CITATION:Richmond, A, 2012. Surface wave formation induced by a high-strength submerged jet in a bottom blown metallurgical vessels has been studied experimentally by using one-seventh water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm) reactor with two different tuyere configurations. Experimental results have been discussed in terms of the wave period, wave frequency and wave amplitude with respect to air injection rate and tuyere configuration at a 0.23 m bath height. The results from high speed photography observations displayed the formation of rotating surface waves which circulates within the water model. It was found that the frequency and the amplitude increased with gas injection rate. The wave period for off-centre nozzle orientation was found to be lower than those of the centre configuration. The experimental results also showed that the frequency of a rotating wave increases when the tuyere orientation becomes off-centred . The predicted amplitudes were in very good agreement with the experimental values over a range of gas flowrates between 0.00599m 3/s to 0.01081 m 3/s.

Fine (<20 µm) valuable mineral particles are difficult to recover in conventional flotation circuits. (Trahar and Warren, 1976; Jameson, Nguyen and Ata, 2007; Kohmuench et al, 2018). This leads to a loss of valuable fine mineral particles to tailings. Recovering these particles would be of economic benefit. Novel reagents, including temperature responsive polymers, for example, are being developed to improve recovery of fine valuable mineral particles by froth flotation (Ng et al, 2018a, 2018b). The approach involves selectively aggregating the valuable fine particles and making these aggregates hydrophobic, resulting in hydrophobic aggregates of appropriate size (in order of 100 microns) being amenable to recovery by froth flotation. The polymers developed have been produced at laboratory scale but not a full scale yet. The exact cost of producing such novel polymers is currently unknown, but they are likely to be more expensive than conventional reagents.

An alternative development drilling strategy to the one currently in use at an open pit mine was investigated using geostatistics for a portion of the pit. The massive orebody, the 3-D nature of the problem, and the location of ultimate pit limit in the study area all created some unique problems in devising the development drilling strategy. Rather than using confidence interval of the global reserve estimate as the main criterion for development drilling, the confidence interval of short and medium range mine planning blocks was used as the objective. Based on somewhat arbitrarily selected level of confidence, the results from the study showed that a total of 50 diamond drillholes (DDHs) rather than the planned 62 DDHs is sufficient in the study area, if the selected confidence levels are acceptable to the management. The paper also emphasizes the importance of particular objectives being used in development drilling and how they influence the "optimal" placement of the development drillholes.

Uranium occurrences and the probable Australian reserves are discussed and the recovery and processing methods used in treatment plants at Radium Hill and Port Pirie, S.A., Rum Jungle and Moline, N.T., and Mary Kathleen, Qid. are reviewed. The broad aspects of the application of nuclear power in Australia are then considered, and those factors of greatest significance are highlighted. It is these factors that are most likely to dictate the future role of nuclear generation in Australia. In commenting on private industry applications, the paper emphasises that each case must be considered on its own merits, and a warning is given that general statements can be misleading. In the long-term situation nuclear power is considered to be capable of playing a leading role and the discussion covers desalination and high load industries although short term applications appear difficult to justify. In non-power applications for nuclear energy reference is made to isotopes and the uses of nuclear devices in mining and civil engineering with a pertinent comment on safety.

Reconciliation of the ore reserve has been an integral part of mine planning since Bougainville Copper Ltd. commenced mining operations at Panguna in 1972. Confidence in the ore reserve is considered essential, both for long term planning of the deposit, and for fair and accurate reporting of the mining resource to shareholders. Recoverable, proven reserves are published annually. Although the ore reserve quoted is based only on diamond drill hole (DDH) information on a 122 metre by 122 metre grid, predictions are regularly reviewed against production. Concentrator results are taken to be the best estimate of grade and tonnage. Surveyed mined perimeters and average blasthole grades are reconciled at the end of each month against the concentrator figures. Predictions of the in-pit reserve are made using an orebody model. DDH and blasthole (BH) sample grades are used to make predictions for both long and short term planning. This paper describes how reconciliations are used to validate ore reserves at Panguna. Development of the orebody model is described, and some of the difficulties encountered in doing reconciliations are addressed.

Current problems in predicting sub-surface strata movement and fracture development due to longwall mining have highlighted the need for more accurate, dependable methods of physical modelling of rock mechanics problems which are beyond the capabilities of current mathematical techniques. Physical model studies of the caved zone above the working faces up to the base of a water source are of importance in attempting to understand changes in mass permeability due to induced fracture zones and the resulting ground water conditions. Turkey&apos;s most important supplies of coking coals are to be found within the hard coal resources of the Black Sea coast. Coal seams up to 9 metres thick, dipping at angles as steep as 90 degrees are being successfully mined at the Kozlu Mine. Since 1956, mining operations have been carried out under the sea in dry conditions. The undersea mining conditions of the Kozlu Mine have been investigated using scaled physical models constructed from artificial materials which satisfied necessary scaling requirements. Models representing the in-situ conditions were tested and the following extraction sequence was employed: 1. The Sulu Seam extraction 2. The Acilik Seam extraction (as two slices) 3. The Piric Seam extraction. The displacement of the fixed reference points were subsequently measured using a high precision photogrammetric technique and induced horizontal and vertical strains were calculated.

The Beruang Copper-Gold Deposit is located very near the centre of Kalimantan in Indonesia. It is a dacitic tuff hosted deposit currently being explored by Kalimantan Gold Inc of Canada. Exploration activity to date at Beruang has been focused on the Main Zone, which is defined by a north-south elongate, 1 + 1.5 km zone of anomalous copper and gold, and intense phyllic alteration. The disseminated sulfides responsible for the anomalous copper values produce a moderate to high chargeability signature. Phyllic alteration is overlain at high levels, and on the western edge of the Main Zone, by advanced argillic alteration. The dacite tuffs hosting the mineralisation are cut by post-mineralisation dacite dykes that are delineated by ground magnetics and geological mapping. Base metals, principally zinc and lead, form broad halos around the Main Zone. These metals are incorporated in massive NE-trending, polymetallic mineralisation that outcrops to the north and south of the Main Zone. IP survey results highlight the highly pyritic NNE-trending shear zone, which hosts most of the copper mineralisation in the Main Zone. A high chargeability anomaly at depth in the central-east part of the Main Zone is interpreted to be the source for mineralising hydrothermal fluids. This is suggested by zonations in alteration and mineralisation. A deep chargeability anomaly can be correlated with the downward plunge of a pyritic breccia, encountered at shallow levels in drillholes, and is a potential breccia pipe target. Compilation and inversion modelling of the IP results has yielded some interesting drill targets.

A positive displacement pump is being dev eloped for pipeline transportation of coking coal to a -50 mm export specification, at a con- centration and velocity which will allow trans- portation in the plug flow region, minimising degradation of the particle structure, and pipe= line friction losses which will be lower than with turbulent or laminar flow. Pump operation is by hydraulic powered free pistons in a rota- ting cylinder block, with cylinders overlapped by stationary inlet and discharge ports in a water lubricated and sealed rotary valve. Before this development coking coal was not considered suitable for transportation in slurry form, for the valves in the double act- ing duplex piston pumps used for slurry pipe- lines, cannot be divorced from the slurry and require that the solid material must be reduced to a fines&apos;consistency before introduction into the pump suction. The hydraulic transportation of 10 million tonnes of -50 mm coking coal, 50 km from the Bargo area west of the escarpment to an offshore shiploader at Port Kembla is feasible. Study shows that economic factors alone would dictate that the development of a pumping system for long distance transportation of coking coal is necessary. Past experience has shown that the automation of the dragline swing motion requires real time monitoring of the bucket position. A current project at the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) is aiming to achieve this using machine vision. The hardware platform is a Datacube MaxVideo 200 system. The images are obtained by a fixed camera installed on the dragline boom. The field of view is large enough to include the bucket in all possible configurations. Standard chain coding and run-length coding algorithms are used to process the video image. The three-dimensional bucket position is calculated by combining the output of the machine vision system with the rope length data obtained from transducers installed on drag and hoist drums. This information is then fed into a control computer which takes corrective action to suppress bucket oscillations before they reach dangerous levels.

A substantial cost is invested into the data collection phase of any exploration or development program; notwithstanding, it is impractical to expect a database of information can be collated to ensure a perfect geological interpretation. The question then becomes, is there a possible alternative interpretation and what is the likely impact of the variations? Modelling in 2005, of the Cosmo lode at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, Western Australia led to consideration of the philosophical implications associated with resource management. It was concluded that several plausible geological models could be constructed from the known geological database. To varying degrees, this predicament is common to all geological reconstructions, as several alternative geological models can be generated at almost any stage that will impact on the resultant resource estimation and mine plan. The significance of that variation and the associated risk of multiple geological models (MGMs) requires due consideration. What is being suggested is that using plausible multiple geological models advances the holistic understanding of a mineral deposit within the bounds of the data collected, providing fluidity for updating geological knowledge and building inherent variability into the design and planning departments where variations of the geological models may materially impact on the resource performance.

While convergence of plates at a subduction zone produces shortening at the toe of the overriding plate, this deformation is localized to the frontal 100 km or so of the plate. There is increasing evidence that the state of strain in back-arcs, volcanic arcs, and possibly the entire forearc is extensional. The most likely cause of this extension is rollback of the subducting plate and trenchward advance of the overriding plate. Arcs are thermally weakened, and are activated repeatedly through time. The primary expression of the extensional state of strain is spreading of the weak arc material, either by splitting the arc or by back-arc spreading behind it.
