The hazard posed by underground mine fires is illustrated in the first part of this paper by means of a review of experiences in four mining countries over the last three decades. This brief review indicates that while much progress has been made generally in preventing fires and providing means of protection to miners, the possibility of disasters occurring must continue to be regarded as very real. Based upon recent investigations by the South African mining industry, an integrated strategy for providing protection to personnel in the event of a fire is outlined in the second part of the paper. The main, complementary, elements in this strategy are the prevention of ignitions, the limitation of fires, provision of protection systems and equipment, training for emergencies, and effective implementation of safety measures. Some comments are made on important aspects of these elements and on possible further developments.

The problems experienced with longwall mining machinery motivate the development of an expert system for fault diagnosis. The techniques of knowledge representation, database, knowledge base and inference engine guide the selection of the expert systems and languages -"Turbo Prolog"- as exemplified in the case study of hydraulic support. The aim is to hasten future development of a fault diagnosis system and the design of a system to locate and determine the causes of failure of longwall machinery. The system would use its stored case history and other information to make fault diagnoses and suggest appropriate remedies. Consequently down-time would be reduced and production and profitability should increase.

Coal winning in the Latrobe Valley exceeds 45 mtpa uses a small number of Bucket Wheel Excavators and high speed conveyor systems. While this equipment offers many advantages in the production cycle, incorrect use can lead to low productivity and risks to the safety of the operators and equipment. The mining equipment is of high capital value and easily damaged when used outside the correct operating range. In the extreme case, this can result in total machine collapse, having major implications for personnel safety as well as production and costs. With an active productivity improvement program in the Latrobe Valley in the last two years resulting in a 50 per cent reduction of personnel, many experienced operators have retired. Mine management are facing the urgent need to rapidly train new operators to maintain high productivity levels and reduce the risk of accidents to personnel and high capital cost plant. With the assistance of the Central Gippsland College of TAFE a Certificate Level course has been developed for open cut operators. The course covers all essential training needs for the Latrobe Valley mines. The training is developed from National Competency Standards, allowing transfer of skills, and is flexible to suit other enterprises. It has been written for self-paced learning with the total job understanding, and to have competency-based learning outcomes, training tasks and assessments built-in to modules. With the introduction of this new training program, management is convinced that the element of risk within the mine will be significantly reduced. For these reasons it is an ideal training model for other enterprises.

The integration of historic exploration geoscientific data with high precision multi-element and isotope geochemistry can provide explorers fundamental information on mineral potentiality, tectonic setting, source signatures, fluid migration, mineralisation environment and the timing of mineralising events. Such knowledge is crucial for ore modelling and target generation, particularly for concealed ore systems in both brown and greenfields. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) ships about 600,000 dry tonnes of copper concentrate per annum to Japan, Germany and Spain, with some spot sales to other countries. Concentrate sales value for 1984 was 335 million US$, representing almost half of PNG exports. Contained metal determination is based on physical and chemical measurements on representative samples. The entire procedure is subject to statistical uncertainties and possible systematic errors; losses as high as several percent of contained copper or gold are common and frequently are regarded as unavoidable. In this context, the function of the chemical laboratory is to identify and eliminate such errors and recommend correct technical procedures for possible inclusion in sales contracts. BCL's marketing management has encouraged this approach and the close buyer versus seller agreement is beneficial for all parties involved. BCL participates in the respective technical committees of the Standards Association of Australia (SAA) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Standard methods for sampling and analysis of copper, lead and zinc ores and concentrates are in course of preparation, some being due for publication shortly.

Analysis of the topography associated with large vertical strains measured in the upper crust in the Basin and Range and elsewhere in the US Cordillera shows that it varies systematically with upper crustal strain such that it decreases where tectonism has resulted in relative thinning. The magnitude of topographic deflection suggests that the amount of thickening or thinning of the upper crust cannot also be reflected in vertical motions of the Moho discontinuity, nor can the vertical strain be isostatically accommodated by inflow or outflow of asthenosphere, mantle lithosphere or mafic lower crust. Simple isostatic calculations show that the compensating medium had a density probably within 100-200 kg/m of average upper continental crust, thus indicating that the compensating medium lies within the crust and is probably in large part quartzose. This conclusion is in accord with laboratory experiments on the strengths of rocks, and with reflection seismograms in deformed regions which suggest that the Moho is generally flat beneath regions of extreme gradients in upper crustal vertical strain. The upper crust floats on a quartzose layer in the mid-crust which, under orogenic conditions, is apparently so weak that it behaves as a relatively inviscid fluid at geologic timescales (> 10,000 a) and subcontinental lengthscales (100-1000 km).

A typical large surface mine in Scandinavia has hard rock, a cold cli- mate, poor ore, a complicated vein type orebody and high labour costs. In order to survive, these mines have to maximise their ore production, minimise waste extraction and get the most out of every man hour. This article describes two examples of how inclined blastholes drilled with hydraulic percussive drills can help to meet these requirements. Both of these Scandinavian mines, Kemira Ltd's Siilinjarvi mine in Finland and Sydvaranger A/S's Bjornevattn iron mine in Norway, use inclined blastholes of 200 mm in diameter. The Siilinjarvi quarry is using inclined holes in production drilling. The Bjornevattn iron mine is blasting the final pit walls with inclined holes. The benefits gained when using inclined instead of vertical blastholes are better selectivity, better bench drilling conditions, steeper final pit walls and increased safety.

A brief description of viscosity measuring devices used in Dense Media Separation (DMS) plants is given, including a new On-line viscometer system. The various factors which affect suspension viscosity are identified. The effect of temperature variation on viscosity and viscosity measurement is examined in detail. Practical problems in using a modified Stormer viscometer for laboratory testwork are noted. Likely problems of continuous viscosity measurements are also discussed.

The cause of spontaneous combustion of pyritic black shale has been studied by calorimetry and other techniques. The conditions required for ignition to occur are: 1. A critical mass of pyritic black shale. 2. Acidity. 3. Fine shale particle size. 4. A high ambient temperature. 5. The exclusion of air during the preparation of a calorimeter charge. The reaction is characterised by an initial incubation period during which an unknown phase is produced. The build up and oxidation of this phase results in a chain reaction culminating in ignition. The mechanism is believed to involve the interaction of pyrite, sulphuric acid, ferrous sulphate, or meta-stable oxysulphates, with ammonium nitrate. The recommended strategy for prevention of premature detonation is to neutralise the acids in the shale with quick and slow release alkaline materials.

S. A. Tomich (Consulting Geologist, Perth) : I would like to commend Mr. Haycraft on his presentation on the economic geology of the North End of Kalgoorlie. This is an intriguing area which is in the Kalgoorlie field but not of it, inasmuch as it is separated spatially from the main Golden Mile by the Golden Pike Fault. Mr. Haycraft has stressed the differences-the mineralogical and structural differences of economic significance between the two areas.I would like to ask whether he is satisfied that the lithological sequence in the North End is the duplicate of that in the main Golden Mile area irrespective of the postulated effects of erosion, and more specifically whether there is any chance that the quartz-dolerite-greenstone of the North End may be in any way dissimilar from the quartz-dolerite-greenstoneof the Golden Mile which is tellurude bearing.J. A. Haycraft: In relating the quartz-dolerite in the Hannan's North-Mount Charlotte area back to the Golden Mile, we find some quite close similarities. Although the rocks are similar they are not necessarily one and the same.At Mount Charlotte we have three varieties of dolerite- a coarse-grained gabbroic dolerite on the eastern side of the orebody, the host rock medium grained and on the western side, a fine grained dolerite. Further west we have an amphibolitic variety of quartz dolerite.Recent drilling south of the Golden Pike fault on the Enterprise No. 20 level had indicated a remarkably similar sequence of rocks. We drilled west through a wide section of medium grained rocks into a fine grained rock and then into amphibolitic quartz dolerite before intersecting the Golden Pike fault. The mining industry seeks to engage with and respond to stakeholders through open consultation processes during the various phases of a mining project (Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, 2006). Two Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects conducted in the Bowen Basin coalfields in Central Queensland investigated the use of a stakeholder panel for the evaluation of mine site rehabilitation. The panel members were drawn from the local and regional area, and represented neighbouring landholders, traditional owners, AgForce, local government, conservation groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Greening Australia and the Fitzroy Basin Association. The approach of utilising stakeholders to establish rehabilitation criteria was proposed as an alternative to the established practice of assessing rehabilitated areas against a suite of quantitative completion criteria; eg >70 per cent vegetative ground cover or <5 t/ha/a soil loss. The basis of this approach recognises the reality that the definition of completion criteria has proved problematic over the last 40 years with no broad consensus reached on the suite, let alone the metrics; eg the exact cover level that will benchmark acceptance of the mine site rehabilitation.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2016. In this paper is given a general description of the Black Star copper orebody, its relation to the lead orebodies and the controlling factors in the mineralisation.Copper ore, in the form of chalcopyrite, was first noted at Mount Isa in 1930 during the surface drilling campaign to prove the downward continuation of the silver-Iead-zinc orebodies.Details of the occurrence are set out in table 1.Other sub-commercial widths were also disclosed and examination of these occurrences showed that commercial mineralisation could not be expected within 800 ft. of the surface. It was therefore decided that further exploration was not warranted until underground workings had advanced to this horizon.Detailed surface mapping showed two small outcrops of the host rock of the copper orebody. One occurrence, 50 ft. x 75 ft., was of quartz, with leaching suggesting former dolomite. Another outcrop, further north and west of silicified shale, with low grade oxidised copper, has recently been found. This paper examines six sites in Northern Nevada where soils and groundwater have been contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and/or organochlorine compounds. All six of the sites studied are located in an arid, highly mineralised area of the Great Basin. As a part of the original geochemical investigation to determine the applicability of biodegradation in the remediation of petroleum impacted soils and aquifers extremely high levels of uranium, vanadium and molybdenum were detected in the anaerobic groundwaters associated with some of the hydrocarbon plumes. Some groundwater uranium concentrations exceeded 7 ppm while vanadium and molybdenum concentrations reached almost one ppm. The bioleaching appeared to be most effective under methanogenic conditions and was noted in both high sulfide and low sulfide environments. Background concentrations of uranium in the formation were measured between 6 ppm and 109 ppm and highly dependent upon depth with the highest levels being found in association with evaporites. Unlike uranium, vanadium tended to concentrate in free-floating organic fractions reaching levels as high as 2000 ppm in the layers of jet fuel floating above the groundwater. Molybdenum was the most resistant of the three metals to bioleaching.

Broken Hill metallurgists have been responsible for some of the most important developments in mineral processing technology. These occurred mainly in two periods, 1902 - 15 and 1955 - 70. Mineral flotation was developed as an industrial process during the first period and this happened in two stages, the recovery of zinc minerals from the tailings dump accumulated during the gravity concentration of the oxidised ores and the selective recovery of galena and marmatite during flotation of the primary ores. During the second period fast accurate analytical procedures were developed to provide rapid assessment of process performance, and new means of controlling the process were devised which improved throughputs, grades and recoveries. These technological successes were due to the skills of the metallurgists and the commitment of the companies. They brought large financial returns. They were achieved under difficult circumstance. There are important lessons to be learnt from these successes.

The nickel ores mined in New Caledonia for one century are mainly silicate ores. These ores are nickel enriched saprolites, formed by partial weathering of peridotites (predominantly harzburgites and some dunites), serpentinised to varying degrees. Saprolites constitute the lower horizon of lateritic soils, sometimes up to 100 metres thick, developed on peneplains now greatly modified by erosion. Saprolites are generally overlain by laterites, a more weathered horizon, where the main components are iron oxy-hydroxides with a low nickel grade. The structure of saprolites depends essentially on the serpentine content of peridotites and, on the other hand, serpentine minerals may have a high nickel content and, so, represent important nickel bearing minerals in silicate ores. Two types of serpentines can be found in nickel ores from New Caledonia: ò primary serpentines, formed by hydration of olivine at temperatures below 400¦C, during overthrusting of peridotites in late-Eocene (Paris, Andreieff and Coudray, 1979), are generally very abundant; ò secondary nickeliferous serpentines, associated with other sheet silicates in garnierites, are now relatively scarce but garnierites were selectively mined one century ago, because of their high nickel grade.

Geologists working in mountainous terrain were the first to map and interpret in three dimensions and as a result, made the first contributions to our understanding of mountain building and structural geology. However, geology during the 1900s has been dominantly a two-dimensional exercise in data gathering and interpretation. The standard output of geological surveys and university research has been the geological map and the standard methodology of the mineral explorer has been surface mapping and prospecting. The future will be concerned far more with the third dimension.

Rocks of all geological ages are present on the Australian continent. As a result of its geological heritage, Australia is richly endowed with mineral and energy resources. Due in part to its enormous mineral wealth, the nation is in the position of being a wealthy country surrounded by less developed countries of the Asian and Pacific region. Over many years Australia has developed and gained valuable experience in the exploration, mining and processing of a wide range of mineral and energy resources. In an interdependent world community, it is obviously in Australia's interest to cooperate and provide assistance in geoscience education and training to developing countries of the region.
