Modern, research-based approaches to mineral exploration are essential to the future maintenance of the mineral industry. These need to fully utilise the rapidly expanding growth of understanding of the evolution of the earth's crust, and be properly integrated with advances in understanding of chemical and physical processes involved in ore formation. BMR has a major role to play in supporting the growth and utilisation of this research base, as well as maintaining the national geological and geophysical bases which are essential both to tactical and strategic interests of Australia and of its mineral industry. The objective development of data-process modelling is one target of such strategic research based on a more integrated approach to research by BMR, mineral companies, CSIRO and the universities with emphasis given to promoting positive feedback during research activities. Examples of the success of strategic research in Australia and overseas are noted in the Text.

Basic premises for evaluating special characteristics of gold-bearing porphyry metal systems stem from their contrasts with properties of the class as a whole. Included features are differences in geologic, thus tectonic, environments, subtle but real differences in the proportions of accessory metals Mo-Ag-Au that are regionally and within some regions, tempo-rally distinct, contrasts in the Ag:Au ratios, petrological-geo-chemical as well as isotopic differences between intrusive suites, the age and nature of host terranes, contrasts in alter-ation style, and zoning variations of mineralogical and physical properties of rocks. These properties are linked in various ways in different regions and suggest that in large gold-bearing systems where gold may be uniformly distributed, environ-ments of emplacement, and compositions or sources of igneous "progenitors" may dominate in importance over processes, and that systems in which gold is zoned are processes-dominant.

Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) prevention remains a priority focus within high-risk industries sector. A major mining operation sought to strengthen their approach to the management of high-risk activities through an in-depth review of all historical incidents that had serious injury or fatality potential (SIFp) events (sometimes known as hi-potential events). The analysis found that the organisation invested a disproportionate level of resources, time and effort on low consequence incidents with a high proportion of SIFp incidents going under the radar. It was found that 76 per cent of SIFp incidents were rated in moderate or lower risk categories and conversely, almost half of those incidents with a ‘serious risk’ rating had little or no potential for a serious outcome. As a result of this project, the operation engaged in a renewed focus on critical risk management and enhanced its operating cadence in critical risk for the workforce. This included bow tie analysis, an update to critical risk standards and increased workforce engagement in the use of critical control verifications in the field. Data analytics with lead and lag indicators continue to provide senior leadership team and risk owners with an understanding of exposure for SIFp and control effectiveness. The audience will take away learnings from a real-world case study that provides data-driven insights of the human, local and organisational factors contributing to incidents with SIF potential. In addition, participants will understand the steps taken to categorise and analyse this incident data and the initiatives currently being implemented by the organisation as a result.

Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine in the southern Mongolia holds mineral resources that make it one of the largest known copper and gold deposits in the world. The project is operating an open pit mine on the near surface of Southern Oyu deposit and developing underground block-caving mine at the Hugo Dummet North where 80 per cent of total resources exists. Oyu Tolgoi (OT) commenced open pit mining in 2011 and implemented an industry standard blasthole sampling, and ordinary kriging grade control estimation with block-out process. Since 2017, grade control improvement projects have successfully completed that have led to the implementation of current, improved grade control system. Geological model is updated by blasthole logging on Leapfrog® and used for daily grade estimations. GC estimation is proceeded solely on Vulcan® by running Lava script and integrating with a relational database. Combination of block-out procedure produces GC model which is updated in Vulcan® and as well as in the database simultaneously. Switching to the integrated database eliminated many manual processes such as importing and exporting data and enabled access to the database anytime, anywhere and from any device. Thereby, these improvements allowed to increase an efficiency, create a comprehensive reconciliation system and reduce operational risks. We are looking forward to expanding applications of integrated grade control data stored in the database. This paper outlines how the grade control system was developed at OT’s open pit mine, and how it is integrated into the short range mine planning, mine reconciliation workflow and ultimately enabled development of various automated reporting systems.

"Robustness can be defined as the ability of a system to resist change without adapting its initial stable configuration. Robust design methodology, which is widely accepted in the manufacturing industry, allows the establishment of robustness and reliability metrics in scenario analysis.In the mining industry, a mine can be considered as a system with design parameters such as processing plant and mining capacities. Traditionally, a limited number of scenario iterations are performed in an attempt to determine optimal capacity values. An important strategic decision such as process plant capacity in particular is made during the very early stages of a mining study, often based on a low level of information. Lack of time and tools to run and analyse a larger number of possible scenarios for different design parameter combinations are usually the main reasons for not performing a full analysis. In addition, the uncertainty of other mining study input parameters creates more risk in decision-making.With advances in technology, it is now possible to automate the process of generating several thousands of scenarios in an affordable and timely manner. This allows performing the results analysis and assessing robustness and reliability criteria within a reasonable time frame. It is possible to generate a surface of results based on the net present value (NPV) for each scenario. This surface will reflect the efficiency level of the capture of the economic rent for each production scale. In addition, each scenario can be tested under diverse conditions of volatility of other external variables such as prices, costs or recoveries for example.This paper aims to establish a methodology that applies robustness criteria to determine the best scenario on several surfaces of value, which is then assessed with real data from a mining project. Obtained results demonstrate the advantages of using the proposed methodology in dealing with the above-mentioned multidimensional problems. The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bear in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked tug, Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No. 2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fau I has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by 2 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It i composed of bands of milky "buck" quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains withi quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.

The need for a carefully prepared set of special conditions, to be used with general conditions of contract or, alternatively, a purpose written contract for adoption in tunnelling work in Australia is discussed. Recent decisions on the proprietor's liability for tender information and arbitrator's power to award interest are examined. A new clause for inclusion in contracts specifically giving arbitrators power to award interest is suggested. Similarly, a new clause covering delays due to environmental disputes is suggested, particularly for marine outfall tunnels. An alternative method for the settlement of disputes by negotiation is suggested for consideration and contracts and contract administration are discussed as the possible weak point in the construction process. At the conference it is intended to present a method or process to be used in contract administration which should reduce disputes, result in a better quality and efficiency of administration and ultimately in better contracts'.

The paper commences with an overview of the industrial minerals markets, with particular reference to the characteristics that impact on the development of a successful marketing strategy. This is followed by the identification of the steps to be taken in the negotiation and execution of an industrial minerals sales contract, from identification of the appropriate product through negotiation of the contract to ongoing customer relations. An understanding of your customerÆs business is fundamental to a mutually successful long-term relationship with that customer. The paper concludes with an overview of the techniques and approaches through which such a relationship may be achieved and maintained.

Steel fibre reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) is increasingly being used as ground support in both civil and mining applications. In recent years, methods of assessing the performance of SFRS have been developed. These include the beam test such as that prescribed by ASTM C-1018 and the panel test prescribed in the EFNARC European Shotcreting Standard. The panel test has gained popularity in recent times due to the two-way action modelled in the test. However, some difficulties have been noticed. Shear failures sometimes occur and there appears to be a rather high degree of variability in the panel test results. A new method of testing panels has been proposed. A circular panel supported on three symmetrically arranged points has been assessed at the University of Western Sydney. This paper describes the new test which may be the basis of a new specification for the testing of toughness of SFRS and summarises research work which has been carried out to-date.

The Broken Hill orebodies have 'traditionally been mined by cut and fill trethods. In the mid-1950's New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited experimented with sublevel longhole open stoping but did not pursue the method due to inefficient loading and poor fragmentation. The introduction of longhole open stoping in 1968 was a radical change and was necessary to enable the profitable extraction of lower grade orebodies and this method is now used for 55% of the production from The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines.

An experienced and reliable knowledge of fire fighting procedures is necessary for mine emergency situations. Since experts in this area are scarce the technology of expert systems lends itself as a suitable component in the decision making process. This paper describes an expert system that is being developed for this purpose. The expert system. RESCUE. is a knowledge-based computer programme which incorporates the judgement, experience, rules of thumb. mine environmental conditions as well as human intuitions in the mine rescue operation. RESCUE makes decisions such as whether or not the affected area should be sealed.' whether or not rescuemen should be withdrawn, and which fire fighting agent is most appropriate for the situation. The IF..... THEN rules written in the VP-EXPERT shell contains antecedents and conclusions based on environmental as well as other conditions prevailing in the mine. For example, the CO/Oz deficiency ratio indicates the progress of heating; explosibility trends are given by varying flammable gases C CH4,H2,CO) in relation to oxygen concentration, and barometric pressure falls may affect explosibility by increasing CH4 content in workings. The interaction of such numeric-based rules with others rules reflecting the experience and judgement of the experts assist the system to arrive at its conclusions and subsequent course of action.

The conversion relationship between the Bond Work Index W1, specific output of mill and the energy efficiency of grinding were developed using dimensional analysis. These relationships were validated and the value of the conversion coefficient ~ was also obtained using a new installed device for measuring grindability of ores. With the new simulating algorithm the mill specifications, output and size distribution of grinding products of industrial mills can be calculated based on laboratory measured results. As a part of the Newcrest, Telfer Expansion Project, a consortium of Australian, Canadian and South African Mining Contractors in joint venture have been contracted to develop the hoisting shaft. The parties namely; Byrnecut Mining Pty Ltd, Murray and Roberts RUC and Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd have combined their individual expertise to excavate the shaft. There is a particular emphasis on the use of proven shaft sinking techniques from North America and in particular integrating electric hydraulic drilling equipment and personnel from the Canadian Mining industry. The Telfer hoist shaft when completed will have a finished diameter of 7.1 metres and extend to a depth of 1170 metres below the collar. The shaft will be fully concrete lined and will later be equipped for hoisting ore from the Telfer deeps at a rate of five million tonnes per annum. The shaft when completed will be the largest shaft ever completed in Australia on a volumetric basis. This paper will examine the technical aspects of the shaft sink, as well as exploring the integration of personnel and equipment from the frozen prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada into an operation in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia. There are two main areas of application of geology in quarrying: (i) In regional planning for industrial mineral requirements.(ii) In direct quarry management. The regional planning requirement has recently become more evident because of greatly increased land demand conflicts around cities. The direct quarry involvement is a reflection of both the economy and the greatly increased sophistication of the quarry industry. Here, professional planning and development expertise by a geologist is required, to ensure continued supply of raw materials at the best price to the consumer with sufficient profit to the producer. Today, geological insurance safeguards capital investment in plant and assures economical development plans.

Emf measurements on SE galvanic cell: SS; Ni-NiO I solid electrolyte/ZrO2 + CaO I [Pb + Bi]liq alloy; (PbO); SS were made in the temperature range 913-1034 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead. Bismuth alloys with bismuth in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 3.08 mass per cent and oxygen in the alloy varied by equilibrating the metallic system with a suitable (PbO) slag. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to calculate the ternary interaction parameter, eBiO at temperatures of 913, 953 and 993 and 1034 K and to observe the temperature dependence eBiO = 19 200/T - 17.454. Quasichemical fonnulation was employed to yield lnf BiO and reveal the effect of bismuth on oxygen in lead. The results obtained are discussed on the basis of theoretical models and the value of Wagner's energy parameter 'h' estimated to predict the results in a Pb-Bi-O system.

Increasing contamination/impurity levels (including arsenic, antimony, mercury etc.) of concentrates is an issue of global commercial and health / environmental significance. With increasing environmental pressures at smelters, penalties for contaminants in concentrates continue to rise, accompanied by lower reject limits. There is a strong incentive for miners to investigate alternative means to remove contaminants in order to increase the value of complex ores and concentrates. This paper discusses the global problem of contamination in complex ores and concentrates, how the Toowong Process technology is a potential solution to this problem, and the opportunities this technology brings to the business of dealing with deleterious elements. In November 1969, New Zealand Steel Ltd pioneered the commercial use of the SL/RN solid fuel direct reduction process to make sponge iron as a feed material for electric arc furnaces. Serious process problems with the use of green balls and coal injection were progressively overcome. The process was developed by New Zealand Steel along a radical route, of feeding the fine grained raw ironsand concentrate and coal directly to the kiln. Contemporaneously with this development of direct reduction, steelmaking process innovations were made that enabled the arc furnaces to operate successfully with the high volumes of acid slag.
