Steel rolling mill product finishing pro cesses gradually become or often already are unsuited for current production and marketing conditions. Indications are made as to what has been done to (i) rectify situations of this kind and, (ii) to reduce both product finishing time and costs. The principal features of two separate case studies are reviewed, these being (a) the finishing-end of B.H.P.'s Newcastle o.2 Merchant Mill and, (b) a mixed functions finishing yard and warehouses group (known as he Merchant Mills Loading Yard) which has been perating for a number of years. Heatings, fires and explosions in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland coal mines since 1972, are reviewed. Geological and mine settings are outlined. Where available, gas analysis and critical decisions are discussed. This paper updates work by NSW Department of Mineral Resources (1995) and the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy in a report on fires and explosion in Queensland coal mines (Richardson and Ham, 1996). Incident data has important applications in terms of evidence-based risk assessment and identifying key issues to be integrated into competency based training programs. Predictive indicators are reviewed in terms of coal parameters in seams where the incidents occurred.

Xstrata CopperÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations is located in mineral rich north-west Queensland and is one of the largest sources of copper in the world. This world-class underground operation is planned to produce over 6.6 million tonnes of copper ore in 2007 from the X41 and Enterprise Mines. With an underground mining history of over 50 years and underground reserves of over 83 million tonnes at 2.6 per cent copper, mine planning for the future becomes an exciting challenge for the technical team due to the older nature of certain areas. The 1100 Orebody of the X41 mine was one of the first places that copper mining occurred, with its discovery in 1953 - 1954 and mining commencing in the 1960s. Sublevel open stoping mining methods have been employed since that time as the means of extraction, using a primary-secondary sequence to maximise stope turnaround time. Large Transverse Pillars within the 1100 orebody were not mined out in order to provide access for ventilation, power, orepasses and other services. The Panel Pillar, 4180XC and 4010XC pillars are three such Transverse Pillars in the 1100 orebody that will be mined as a final retreat. This paper discusses the technical challenges and issues associated with the extraction of Q390 stope, one of the stopes located in the Panel Pillar, and the design solutions to overcome these issues. Managing the exposure of backfilled stopes of variable fill strength, ensuring the stability of the crown, stope walls and drawpoints, managing vertical openings, re-establishing service networks, and stope filling are the critical issues given consideration for the final design of Q390 stope and other such stopes within a Transverse Pillar. Communication and coordination between the different departments in the mine are essential for the necessary work to be completed in a timely manner to bring pillar stopes into production.

Pre-drainage experiments have been conduct- ed at Appin, Cook, John Darling, Leichhardt, Macquarie, Metropolitan and Moura No. 2 Collieries. Appin (550 m deep) experiences particular gas problems in development drivages, and the almost pure CH4 seam gas makes difficult tiro compliance with statutory maxima in intakes and returns. Patterns of 43 mm diameter drain- a,.;e holes drilled ahead and laterally into virgin coal have improved gas conditions in working places and have allowed tolerable advance rates. Cook, Leichhardt, Metropolitan and Moura No,. 2 Collieries have experienced gas and stress phenomena ranging from conical bursts less than one tonne to full scale instantan- -us outbursts of hundreds of tonnes with tens ,f thousands of cubic metres of seam gas. The application of tunnel boring machines (TBM) for reef mining is a unique practice with benefits over current mining methods given the right geology and geometry of the orebody. The Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) of Nye, Montana, USA operates two mines for obtaining platinum metals. The operation is currently using a 5.5 m diameter open-type machine for further mine development, as well as another TBM that they own.The latest 7.1 km bored tunnel, known as the Blitz Tunnel, will be routed parallel to the ore deposit in igneous mafic intrusive rock, and will be used for the life of the mine operation. It will be used to map the ore deposit, and provide a rail haulage route.Detecting the reef in relation to the TBM requires careful analysis. Diamond core drilling occurs ahead, above, and alongside the machine at every 150 m. The core is drilled, logged, and interpreted on the spot, concurrent with boring. JUST prior to the war the Broken Hill South Ltd: raised, on the average, 6628 tons of ore per week, all of which was crushed and treated in the 4-section gravity mill and the slime flotation plant, for the recovery of lead concentrate carrying silver. The sandy residues from that treatment were railed to the treatment plant of the Amalgamated Zinc (De Bavay's) Ltd. for the recovery of zinc concentrate by flotation, on the joint account of both companies. Subsequent to that-since 1916-approximately 1000 tons of old dump slime were also treated weekly for the recovery of lead and silver as slime-lead concentrate.PLANT CAPACITYUnder this programme the Babcock and Wilcox boiler plant of 8 boilers was taxed to such an extent as to call for the installation of two additional boilers, each of 2690 sq. ft. of heating surface and 55 sq. ft. chain-grade area.The electric generators and the air compressors of the old powerplant were also loaded to their maximum capacity. In view of the fact that the old power-plant had been added to from time to time since 1901, and that further extension was notpossible, and as it was not, moreover, an economical arrangement, the whole question of power generation was reconsidered. The unmanned driving technology in open pit coalmines is an important technology that relies on innovation to drive the development of the open pit coal mining industry in China’s transformation of growth drivers and industrial structure upgrading. It is an important path to solve the shortage of mine truck drivers in the future mining, an important way to improve the working environment of open pit mining personnel, and an important foundation for achieving flexible production capacity in open pit mining to cooperate with the coordinated development of new energy. The communication rules at intersections are key to ensuring the safety and efficiency of unmanned driving in open pit coalmines. This paper proposes a collaborative traffic strategy between unmanned trucks for the single bucket unmanned truck intermittent process system in open pit coalmines. Based on the gap theory, this paper analyses the conflict characteristics and establishes a coordinated traffic strategy for the common intersection and merging conflicts of unmanned truck trucks in open pit coalmines, A multi-agent system simulation platform was built to evaluate the coordinated traffic efficiency under different initial average gap sizes of vehicles, with intersection traffic density, vehicle speed, and gap changes as key indicators. The results show that under the simulation conditions of this article, when the initial average gap of vehicles reaches three (four) times or more of the safe distance, the coordinated traffic performance of intersection conflicts (merging conflicts) is better, and the traffic capacity of intersections is close to the traffic capacity without conflicts.

This paper presents an application of the newly developed risk-cost-benefit (RCB) framework to support risk management decisions for the selection of wall monitoring technologies at an open cut mine site. The RCB framework quantitatively assessed the risk of unstable slope-induced wall failure and its impact on both loss of life and coal recovery. The RCB framework was utilised in the selection of an optimum group of risk-controls to effectively manage the risk of wall failure to ensure safety and optimal production occurred. The RCB framework incorporates mathematical modules that integrated RCB calculations and risk-control effectiveness assessments to determine the risk reduction and financial impact of the examined safety initiatives.This paper provides an overview of the five-staged RCB framework, incorporating the RCB decision support tools, RCBGEN (Risk-Cost-Benefit Generator) and RCEMETHOD (Risk-Control Effectiveness Method), and demonstrates its application to slope stability risk management at the case study site. The RCB charts are designed to display a balance between risk, cost and benefit for easy interpretation by decision makers to support the objective selection of an optimum suite of risk-controls. The RCB analysis revealed that a combination of ævisual inspections, automatic extensometers and radarÆ for fast- and slow-wall failures with structure were sufficient to reduce the probability of loss of life (PLoL) to the æModerateÆ zone as defined by the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS, 2007) for the case study site. Spatial continuity as described by a variogram is a reflection of the underlying mineralisation/geology. Modelling of the spatial continuity (variogram) must account for both the quantitative data (ie sample grades), on which the variogram calculations are based, and the qualitative information as provided by the geological interpretation. An understanding of the geology and the variogram interpretation tie together the sample values and allow us to go beyond the actual data (Journel, 1995). Variography makes geology transportable and allows the geological interpolations to be channelled downstream into mine planning, ultimately affecting the economic decisions surrounding a deposit. As such the process of variography and resource modelling is critical. Thus consistent expert decisions need to be made which force geologists to have a closer look at the available information and the geological interpretations. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the latest developments in visualising variography and to demonstrate their usefulness in decisions regarding the spatial continuity of mineralisation. New ideas concerning potential future developments in visualising and modelling spatial continuity through variography are introduced.

My roots span four generations. My great grandfather, Christian Frederick Fisher, along with twenty-one others was drowned in the New Australasian mine disaster at Creswick in Victoria in 1882. My grandfather, also named Christian Frederick Fisher, escaped and then followed a career of shaft sinking for large companies and operating small mines (very unprofitably according to my father) when funds allowed. My father, an excellent practical mining and mechanical engineer, was also a small miner and my early entry into the industry was, like many before me, very basic. My introductions to the business end of a No. 4 shovel, drilling with hand steel and later with jack hammers without the benefit of airlegs, feeding heavy cordwood to hungry boilers and felling trees for mine timber soon dispelled any illusions I had that mining was a bed of roses.Before it became well known I knew "Life was not meant to be easy".In a family-owned small gold mine in a remote part of Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland I was fortunate in obtaining an excellent grounding in reef and deep alluvial mining. Operating in vertical and underlie shafts the variable ground conditions often required close timbering. Steam pumps were used underground and steam winders for hoisting.The complete absence of municipal or government infrastructure in this remote mining field threw responsibility on each mine operator to be self-sufficient, and responsible for mine development and installation of crushing and milling equipment, accommodation and water supply. Conditions, although harsh, were acceptable in the 1930s, and fostered great self-reliance.The first crushing from our Black Cat Mine in 1935 returned nearly 200 oz from 10 tons of ore. Gold was then worth $13 an ounce compared to about $400 an ounce today; but in those depression years of the 1930s our operation was profitable.This basic education not only returned dividends when confronted with difficult mining problems, but created a deep respect for the miners who develop the small mines and who continue to contribute to the industry today, often under difficult conditions.Australia and mining are synonymous. The industry has been immortalised by the famous historian, Professor Geoffrey Blainey, in his book "The Rush that Never Ended".Initial gold discoveries were concealed and exploration was frowned upon by authority as being disruptive to early rural development. But with the discovery of gold in the Bathurst area of New South Wales by Hargreaves in 1851, the rush to the gold fields began followed by an influx of migrants. The traumatic effect on industry and society that followed, created the pattern of the love-hate relationship that at times became temporarily submerged, but is so evident today.In the harsh economic climate of the 19th century with low wages and no welfare, the opportunity to wrest riches from the earth was literally "rushed" by the adventurous, the poor, the rich, people from all walks of life. Pressures developed on preFederation Governments to provide law, order and infrastructure to the rushes that have never ended.

Since the 1950's drilling has been rapidly mechanised. First from hand held drills with air legs to pneumatic jumbos, then to more effective hydraulic jumbos. Development of underground drilling equipment naturally could not have stopped here. Hydraulic drilling saw an improvement in drilling capacity and efficiency after the introduction of second generation drifters in the early 1980's. Also in the early 1980's a few equipment suppliers started to study how to improve the efficiency in operating the rigs. The first computerised rigs for tunnelling were delivered to work sites in mid 1980's. At the same time a few computerised longhole drills started drilling in mines.

The Odysseus Project is part of the high-grade Cosmos Nickel Complex that lies 30 km north of Leinster. The Odysseus definitive feasibility study (DFS) was approved by the Western Areas’ board in October 2018. Early works commenced in January 2019 with rehabilitation of the existing underground infrastructure. In June 2022 Western Areas was acquired by IGO Ltd. The project is now well advanced to meet its target of first concentrate. The project included the construction of a haulage shaft. The design of the hoisting equipment and the shaft barrel evolved from the initial DFS design stage to the final execution, as the data were made available from the initial investigation to the data gathered during execution (although this did not change from its initial concept). The design philosophy for the haulage shaft incorporated, from the beginning a multidisciplinary approach with inputs from three main areas involved in such projects, namely excavation techniques, geotechnical assessments, and infrastructure construction. This interaction is a fundamental component for the success of such a critical project. In fact, each of these three areas influences each other in a cyclical manner, triggering a continuous review of the project inputs and outputs, while maintaining the original project goals: the design of an infrastructure able to deliver the desired throughput. The throughput dictates the infrastructure that needs to be built, which in turn controls the size of the shaft. The key assumption applied to this is that the rock mass can accommodate the excavation void, and the excavation technique with its tolerances and limits that ultimately need to be verified back with the initial assumptions used for the infrastructure design. The aim of the paper is to present a case study of the experience gained with the Odysseus hoisting shaft and to propose a possible logic path for similar projects elsewhere.

Located on the island of Mindanao in the Southern Philippines, the Tampakan copper-gold deposit represents a major high-sulfidation epithermal deposit superimposed on an underlying porphyry copper system. With a recent JORC compliant indicated and inferred resource estimate of 1104 million tonnes at 0.65 per cent copper and 0.26 g/t gold at a 0.3 per cent copper cut-off grade, Tampakan represents the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposit in Southeast Asia. Since its acquisition by Indophil ResourcesÆ affiliate Sagittarius Mines Inc in August 2002, the deposit is the subject of an ongoing preliminary feasibility study into project viability that is initially focused on a higher-grade copper zone in the north-central part of the deposit. The deposit is hosted by a sequence of subaerial andesitic flows (Tampakan Andesite Sequence) related to a highly eroded andesitic stratavolcanic complex of Pliocene age. Detailed mapping and geochronological dating has identified four volcanic cycles or centres that have been sequentially developed and eroded. This stratovolcanic complex is interpreted to lie on the northern extension of the Sangihe volcanic arc that extends from Northern Sulawesi in Indonesia. The Tampakan district is located within a complex tectonic setting dominated by WNW trending wrench faults that form part of the trans-Mindanao Cotabato Fault Zone. The Tampakan deposit is located near the intersection of one of several WNW trending splay structures with a prominent NNE trending dilational structure, one of many that transect the host volcanic complex. High-sulfidation style copper-gold mineralisation at Tampakan is broadly associated with and central to a flat-lying tabular body of pervasive silica and silica-clay alteration developed within a district- scale lithocap of advanced-argillic and argillic hydrothermal alteration that extends over an area of 90 km2 within the volcanic complex.

The segment of the Upper Cenozoic volcanic chain (CVZ) located on the western border of South America (16-28¦S lat.) is constituted by an association of strato- volcanoes and ignimbrite sheets, with high K calco-alkaline affinities. Strata-bound volcanoes, mainly of andesitic and dacitic composition, present along the whole chain, and various hydrothermal alteration zones, on the slopes and in the cores of eroded volcanic structures. Some of these altera- tion zones bear epithermal precious metal ores and sulphur deposits, which at present are being exploited. The studied Salar de Gorbea area, located in the Andes of northern Chile (25-26¦S lat.) contains a numer- ous group of Miocene to Quaternary stratovolcanoes, with advanced argillic and extreme silicification hydrothermal alteration in their cores and on their slopes, favoring the formation of great volumes of alunite within altered zones and sulphur deposits in the higher parts of the volcanic edifices. Simultaneously, siliceous hydrothermal breccia of the phreato-magmatic type, with evidences of hydromag- matic explosions are recognizable, allowing, in some cases, the ascent towards the surface of rock fragments belonging to the Paleozoic pre volcanic basement. Radiometric ages obtained in some of the hydro- thermal alteration zones (K-Ar in alunite) are slighty young- er than the unaltered rocks which constitute the strato- volcano. Trace element (Hg, As, Sb, S, Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo) patterns in orientative rock samplings show that the studied alterations zones correspond to high sectors of the cpithermal system, without evidences of metallic minerali- zation on surface. The weak erosive action due to the ex- tremely and climatic conditions in this segment of the Andes, has not allowed the cropping out of deeper areas of the hydrothermal alteration zones, in contrast to other Miocene more eroded volcanic edifices and Miocene vol- canic terranes of the Andean Range.

The granulation and bed-permeability of sinter raw materials depend on interactions between the properties of various iron ores and water. The properties of individual iron ores are controlled by their particle size distribu- tion and surface characteristics, which can be described by representative particle size and wettability, respectively. Added water may be absorbed, affect granulation or lower bed permeability. These effects were experimentally studied as a function of properties of the iron ores. A mathematical model was developed in order to calculate the granulated particle size and permeability using the known blend of sinter raw materials. The calculated results were in good agreement with the observed values.

Efficient project planning during the detailed feasibility to final engineering stages of a project requires not only the accurate prediction of the grade, tonnes and recovery, but their degree of variability as well. An understanding of the major parameters involved in the grade and tonnage estimates is essential, and the communication to those receiving the results is most important. The personnel involved in the project require more than just a global reserves classification. Quality parameters other than grade should be evaluated as carefully as the estimate itself. This paper does not present any novel ideas to overcome or enhance any of this. Rather, it takes a step back and tries to look at the global picture of requirements for proper project planning.

Like many industries the coal mining industry has, since the beginning of this century, undergone many changes. Technological advances and the increasing demand for fossil fuels have introduced new mining methods and techniques which allow the extraction of thicker and deeper coal seams at higher rates of production. Most new methods of mining (or for that matter any other processes) introduce problems which the engineers of the industry are expected to face and resolve. Unfortunately, spontaneous combustion has plagued the coal mining industry since the first attempts to mine coal, and is no doubt partly responsible for the reputation that coal mining is a hazardous industry. The financial loss and toll of human lives due to the occurrence of spontaneous combustion of coal in coal mines is enormous, if not incalculable. Its occurrence today is less likely to claim lives, due to both improved methods of working and in the detection of spontaneous combustion sites.

This paper explores the use of a Process Safety Management (PSM) system to manage risk in the mineral processing and metallurgical refining industries. Important elements of a PSM system are described. International regulations and non-regulatory guidelines covering PSM for high hazard industries are reviewed. Case studies of incidents in the mineral processing and metallurgical refining industries are presented to understand the lessons learned from failure to manage risks using a PSM system. Conclusions are drawn to adopt PSM in the minerals and metals processing industry as a tool for loss prevention and risk management.

A mining company has entered into contractual commitments to supply certain quantities of its product to clients in each time period. Failure to fulfil its obligations would damage its reputation as a reliable supplier. The planned production would normally be sufficient unless major problems such as highwall failures, roof falls, natural disaster, or strikes that interrupt production or delays in obtaining environmental permits, occur. To overcome these difficulties, the company may be able to obtain more of the commodity: from its strategic stockpile (if there is sufficient there); by buying it on the spot market; or for some commodities such as gold and uranium, by leasing it. Two sources of uncertainty, the spot price of the commodity and the occurrence of serious incidents that interrupt production, are considered. For simplicity it is assumed that the commodity price follows a geometric Brownian motion, that productions incidents have a binomial distribution, that they are independent from one time period to another and that they do not affect prices. A branching tree structure is used to model the joint evolution of prices and production incidents. The aim of this research project was to evaluate the companyÆs options for fulfilling its contractual commitments. When evaluating these options, multi-stage stochastic programming with recourse was used to solve this problem because in addition to providing the dollar value of the project, it gives decision-makers the æroadmapÆ to reach the optimal value. That is, how much material should be bought/sold on the spot market, how much to add to/subtract from the stockpile, how much to lease and in the worst case what the shortfall would be, for each time period as a function of the current spot price and breakdown status. A case-study over a five-year period is used to illustrate the proposed procedure. In this study the production would be sufficient to cover the companyÆs contractual commitments unless production incidents occur. Focus is on evaluating the impact of the quantity initially in the stockpile on the value of the project when the commodity market is tight, that is, when only small quantities can be bought on the spot market or by leasing.
