Over a century ago the first ship designed solely for carrying a bulk cargo was launched. This vessel, the "John Bowes", with a deadweight of 660 tonnes was a single decked ship with machinery and accommodation aft. As such she was undoubtedly the fore- runner of the bulk carrier of today only some two hundred and fifty times smaller. Whilst the "John Bowes" pioneered the present accepted mode of transporting the bulk com- modities of the world, it is unlikely that her cargo was either loaded or discharged as quickly as that of a 150, 000 tonner of today. Two decades ago the bulk carrier was beginning to feature in the bulk handling ports of the world. Cargoes of iron ore previously carried in the 'tween deck vessels of the Empire type and Second World War Liberty ships began to be poured into the unrestricted open holds of bulk or ore carriers. The size of vessels catering for this relatively new innovation has rapidly grown to pass the 150, 000 deadweight tonne mark, but only in the last few years. The growth from now into the future is not simply one of ship size evolution. Neither is it a function of the depth of water available at ports. It is in fact a function of a number of features such as ports, loading and unloading facilities, ship trading characteristics, length of voyage and total economies of the transport task from supplier to destination.

The Enterprise Mine (EM) is located at Mount Isa and is wholly owned by Mount Isa Mines Limited (MIM). This high-grade copper mine extends from about 1000 m below surface to almost 2000 m below surface. A recent $400 million upgrade has taken the operation from a production rate of 1.3 Mtpa to a capacity of 3.5 Mtpa. The effects of high surface ambient temperatures in summer, combined with the depth of the mine and high virgin rock temperatures results in heat stress in the working place that, without intervention, would exceed the levels that human physiology can withstand. It would also result in significant decreases in productivity and high accident rates even where work is possible. Moreover, with a very hot and deep mine, the needs of æegressÆ and entrapment of workers during a mine emergency must be carefully considered. Enterprise Mine has taken a æsystems approachÆ to the issue of working productively, healthily and safely in heat. This involves setting limits of thermal stress for workers, understanding productivity decrements when working in heat, establishing productive and healthy environmental targets, developing engineering solutions to meet these targets, creating a well-educated workforce with respect to working in heat and then developing health protocols to ensure workersÆ health is protected. Refrigeration must be added to the mine to provide acceptable and productive conditions underground. By the time the mine is commissioned in 2000, Enterprise mine will have an installed refrigeration capacity of in excess of 40 MW(R). The ventilation engineering principles proven over many years at the other Isa underground mines are tailored to æfloodingÆ the mine with air to remove the heat, which is the main contaminant. This principle will not work at the Enterprise Mine, for reasons discussed below. With the underlying ventilation principle no longer satisfactory, a complete review of the entire ventilation principles and engineering solutions was required for the Enterprise Mine.

South Australia's economic development has relied heavily on the mineral industry. In the late 1840s the rich copper deposits at Kapunda and Burra saved the Colony's economy when South Australia became a world copper producer. Copper lodes developed at Moonta-Wallaroo during the 1860s brought further prosperity when mining activities at Kapunda and Burra were in decline. In addition to those large mines there were many smaller workings scattered through the Flinders and Mount Lofty Ranges producing copper, gold, silver, lead and zinc. Most of the mines of this period were worked by Cornish immigrants who brought their own technology and mining methods with them. These people have left a cultural legacy unique in Aus- tralia. In this Jubilee 150 year (1986) the Department of Mines and Energy, working in conjunction with the Department of Environment and Planning, is helping to preserve and interpret selected historic mining sites, most of which have been neglected since their closure. This work is designed to draw people's interest to mining history by providing interpreted sites for them to visit and to demon- strate the importance of the mining industry in South Australia's cultural and economic develop- Ment.

The mining industry is facing some key challenges that provide a compelling case for geometallurgy initiatives. Over the last 30 years, the average grade of Australian orebodies being mined has halved while the waste removed to access the minerals has more than doubled. In the last eight years, the industry’s energy consumption has increased 70 per cent while multi-factored productivity has fallen 24 per cent. The paper documents a broad range of industry case studies which demonstrate strategies for gaining value from geometallurgy.The mining industry constantly faces the key questions of how significant ore variability is on mine valuation and how would knowledge of the variability change the mining schedule, mine to mill design and operation. Using case studies the paper describes the methods used for incorporating mineral extraction attributes into orebody models and their technical integration into daily operation as well as mine planning optimisation. While pit optimisation from a fully attributed geometallurgical model highlights areas of opportunity and risk it is shown that during the scheduling phase of mine planning that significant value can be added. The benefits from these projects included reducing geotechnical and environmental risk, improving mine to mill performance, option analysis and quantified cash flow risk. There is growing acceptance within the minerals industry that ‘realistically assumed modifying factors’ defined by a competent person/s are not sufficient to mitigate the risk of funding mining ventures. Geometallurgy is moving away from factored ore reserves to data-rich block models providing reliable information for mining, metallurgical and environmental considerations.

Global annual gold production has been remarkably constant over the last decade at ~2500 t/a3. The major producers today are China (annual production over 350 t and rising), Australia (250 t), USA (240 t), Russia (200 t) and South Africa (190 t and falling); these figures are representative of recent years but approximate. Demand from jewellery, investment, industrial and dental uses has been in excess of mine production for the last decade, by approximately 1000 t/a.Ongoing exploration is the life-blood for gold mining, and more so than for many other metals. Explorers consider sovereign risk, security, labour costs, commercial terms, land availability and inherent geologic prospectivity to determine where to focus their activities. Exploration success over the last decade has been shared by established major producers like Australia, Canada and USA, several countries in West Africa, and many parts of the Pacific margin. Although gold-only deposits have dominated world gold production historically, the gold-plus types, especially copper-gold, are becoming more important.Australia experienced a major period of exploration success from 1979 that has led to annual gold production rising from 17 t in 1979 to 250 - 300 t/a recently. Today, Australia has economic demonstrated resources of over 9000 t Au, which has risen progressively from 220 t in 1979. The majority of production has come from gold-only deposits in the Yilgarn craton in the southern half of Western Australia, but there are a few large Proterozoic deposits in central Australia including Olympic Dam, Telfer and Starra, which are mostly gold-plus types with copper and gold. Large goldfields in the younger host rocks of eastern Australia include the gold-only deposits of Victoria and North Queensland, and gold-plus deposits of New South Wales.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. Volcanogenic massive basemetal sulphide and gold mineralisation of predominantly low sulphidation style has been located within Lower Tertiary basaltic and felsic volcanic and sedimentary sequences at Ufuo, in the Left April River area, northwest Papua New Guinea. The four discrete massive sulphide bodies, which have been so far identified, occur within a 3 +5 km area situated within a north west trending structural corridor. The sulphide bodies are all localised on the margins of the corridor where the bounding major through going faults are transected by regional faults. Mineralisation is characterised by massive pyrite-bornite-sphalerite-barite-quartz-anhydrite deposition with later galena-tennantite-chalcopyrite. Minor phases include enargite, goldfieldite and bismuth sulfosalts. Jasperoidal silica lenses and bioturbated sediments are closely associated with the massive sulphides. Basemetal sulphide mineralisation is also closely associated with phyllic-style quartz-sericite- altered host rocks underlying the massive sulphide lenses. This mineralised phyllic alteration is localised to fractures, veins and breccias that cross-cut propylitic style alteration characterised by quartz, epidote, chlorite, adularia and zeolite. The mineralised system possesses several hydrothermal features consistent with a copper-rich submarine exhalative volcanic hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) system, ie discrete massive sulphide bodies with abundant barite, associated jasperoidal silica and bioturbated sediments. However, exploratory drilling of the alteration zone underlying each of the massive sulphide bodies has not identified a well-defined zoned alteration pipe that is characteristic of such systems. The alteration is also similar to that of a porphyry-related low sulphidation system in which phyllic alteration has overprinted a regional propylitic style assemblage. The presence of sporadic enargite (and ?tennantite/tetrahedrite) suggest there were intermittent pulses of acid fluids in the system probably derived from exsolved magmatic SO2 which flowed directly to the surface along reactivated faults. The occurrence of tellurium and bismuth minerals is also consistent with a magmatic contribution to the metalliferous hydrothermal fluids. It is proposed that the VHMS orebodies are the products of submarine exhalative deposition generated by a crystallising magma emplaced within crust of on-going tectonism. Ufuo mineralisation is similar to many VHMS deposits elsewhere in that it is unclear whether the metals are derived from the magma directly, or via seawater leaching of the wallrock. Additional studies such as oxygen isotope analysis may assist in resolving this issue. If the metals are shown to be of direct magmatic origin then there may be good prospects for discovering economic-grade porphyry-related mineralisation at depth below the massive sulphide deposits.

"Characterisation of sulfide minerals (eg pyrite, sphalerite) in historic tailings can assist in determining whether there are economic benefits of reprocessing such materials using modern metallurgical practices. In addition, there are associated environmental advantages if the historic tailings are actively generating acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). At the Old Tailings Dam (OTD), Savage River, Western Tasmania, 38 Mt of pyritic tailings were deposited from 1967 to 1982; consequently it has been recognised as an AMD source. Long-term management options considered for this site have included the establishment of either a water, hard-engineered or vegetation cover. However, due to geotechnical challenges posed and the lack of success demonstrated by previous pilot studies, these strategies have not been implemented. Instead, resolving the pyrite chemistry can allow for a first-pass assessment of whether reprocessing these tailings is a feasible option as part of a long-term management strategy for this legacy site.Tailings samples (n = 144) were collected across the OTD from up to 2 m depth from five facies (A–E), and four zones (1 to 4; defined by hydrological regime and grain size). These materials were subjected to acid-base accounting (ABA) and mineralogical evaluations to determine their geoenvironmental characteristics. Following this, 26 samples were selected for in-depth laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) investigations to evaluate pyrite chemistry across different tailings facies. The results revealed enrichment of Co and Ni in these materials. Specifically, Co content was up to 3.0 wt per cent, particularly within facies C to E, and Zones 3 and 4. Cobalt is recognised as a critical metal, therefore, reprocessing should be considered as a future rehabilitation option for the OTD, pending resource definition using established codes and practices.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A, Fox, N and Jackson, L, 2016. Viscosity of oxide melts is one of the fundamental physicochemical properties that plays a crucial role in important technological and natural processes like slag flow, slag/metal separation, volcano eruptions etc. However, many oxides melt at extremely high temperatures and are highly corrosive in the liquid state, which makes experimental measurement of melt viscosity by traditional experimental techniques a difficult and expensive, if not unachievable, task. In this case it might be useful to employ other methods of viscosity determination such as modelling or simulation. In the present paper the shear viscosity coefficients of selected pure refractory oxides (CaO, MgO, Al2O3 and others) have been simulated at temperatures above their melting points via the classical molecular dynamics and compared to the available viscosity data (eg experimental viscosities, other model predictions) collected by the authors. The simulation has been carried out using the noncommercial molecular dynamics simulation package LAMMPS and the Born-Mayer-Huggins potential, which parameters for the selected oxides were taken from the literature. Several viscosity calculation techniques (the Stokes-Einstein and Green-Kubo equations, the so called Einstein relations, and the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics methods) have been applied to ensure a more reliable viscosity calculation. It has been demonstrated that the simulated viscosity of the selected melts agrees with the available experimental data. It has also been shown that the simulated viscosity of a number of the oxide melts investigated is close to that calculated by phenomenological viscosity models, which supports viscosity extrapolation from the corresponding binaries and ternaries, if no experimental data is present for unary systems. In general, it has been demonstrated that the molecular dynamics simulation could provide a reasonable estimation of viscosity if no other viscosity data is available.

Large-scale open cut mining in the Bowen Basin has been undertaken for over 40 years. During this period, improved mechanical capability and economics have allowed extraction to greater depths, resulting in post-mining landforms of increasing height. Rehabilitation practitioners face significant challenges in stabilising these landforms and require a comprehensive understanding of the Bowen Basin Coal Measures strata likely to be disposed of during mining. Knowledge regarding the potential behaviour of differing spoil materials (following disturbance) provides a rationale to maximise short- to medium-term surface stability of constructed landforms by identification, salvage and advantageous reuse of cladding resources as a means to minimise erosional risks.CITATION:Emmerton, B, Burgess, J, Baumgartl, T and Erskine, P, 2016. Constructed stream diversions are a common element of mine sites across Australia. A review of constructed stream diversion performance in the Bowen Basin funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) in 1999 found over 80 per cent of constructed stream diversions failed to meet regulator and operator expectations. Since that time, improvements have been made in the assessment, design, monitoring and management of constructed stream diversions. Fundamental to these improvements has been the development of a better understanding of the regional stream systems and efforts to replicate the natural stream processes in the function and operation of constructed stream diversions.This paper discusses the history of constructed stream diversions through the Bowen Basin in central Queensland recorded in the outcomes of a series of ACARP funded research projects. Further, the paper reports on the outcomes of a current ACARP funded project that has reviewed the success or otherwise of constructed stream diversions in the region. The assessment has compared the performance of diversions that have been designed to replicate and provide for ongoing stream geomorphic processes with those diversions that were designed and built prior to the development of these design improvements. Drilling mineral sand deposits has specific challenges, which are different from drilling hard rock deposits: Drilled sequences are represented by non-consolidated free-flowing sands to semi-consolidated clayey sands and indurated layers. Valuable heavy minerals (ilmenite, rutile, zircon, leucoxene) have an average density of 4.6 g/cm3, which is significantly heavier than the hosting sand matrix; mainly represented by quartz (density = 2.6 g/cm3). The large difference in the mineral densities can result in sample segregation in the drilling rods and capturing devices causing biased composition of the recovered samples. The drilled strata can contain beds of consolidated sediments, hard pan lenses and concretions. Therefore, chosen drilling equipment should be flexible and permit a switch from drilling the free-flowing sands to hard rock drilling. Thickness of the sand hosted mineralisation varies from several metres to more than 170 m. Mineralisation is distributed above and below the water table. Evaluation of the mineral sands deposits is based on hundreds of drill holes and many thousands of samples, therefore drilling methods should be fast and cost effective. The drilling methods commonly used for mineral sand deposit evaluation, include aircore, triple tube diamond and sonic; including its variants, such as vibrocore drilling technique. The ability of the studied drilling techniques to properly address the above listed challenges in mineral sand deposits, whilst maximising the quality of the obtained samples has been compared in three deposits: Corridor Sands (Mozambique), Richards Bay (Republic of South Africa) and Fort-Dauphin (Madagascar).This study has shown that aircore samples tend to be negatively grade biased, underestimating the heavy minerals content, in particular when drilled intervals are located below the water table. Triple tube diamond core method can produce non-biased samples. However, results can be marred by incorrectly chosen drilling mud. Sonic drilling is a relatively new technique based on a high frequency vibratory technology. It is the only production drilling technique that allows a continuous relatively undisturbed sample of unlithified sands to be obtained. The main limitations of this technology preventing its wider use for developing mineral sand resources are the relatively high drilling costs, in particular when the depth of drilling exceeds 100 m, and speed of drilling advance.

Chance find of an economically important mineral on the sur- face and its exploitation without proper exploration work, has become the habit of humanity since the Bronze Age. The explora- tion and exploitation techniques have, however, been substan- tially improved in the technologically developed western world and system controlled major communist countries. Nevertheless, the greatest need is felt in the Third World countries where large mineral potential exists, but with inadequate investments in exploration and exploitation techniques, a handicap that has been beneficial to the more developed countries, since long. The great number of the Third World countries which are striv- ing hard to develop, need to formulate mineral exploration and exploitation strategies which could enable them to develop their resources. This requires planning and creating new concepts of ore deposit types and genetic models, rheology, economics and their innovation and integration. The following approach could help them to be economically "more independent" by the end of this century. 1. Bridging of pure and applied geology gap, and creating con- sciousness of research and development. 2. Revision of mineral resources concepts adopted to modern technological world. 3. Improved mineralogical research, and determinative miner- alogy as an important asset. 4. Creative research and establishing know-how, with philosophical base for regional exploration projects. 5. Indepth investigation into the origin and growth of earth as a system, and its importance in the association, quality, and quantity of metallic, non-metallic and energy resources con- centrations. 6. Mineral beneficiation, targets and strateties; methods of eco- nomic and improved recovery systems. Development of alter- native technology, and utilization of mineral technology strategies. 7. Theoretical and practical modelling by conventional and com- puter techniques of the existing and expected mineral resources, and mineral development. 8. Critical analysis of the status of mineral economics of the Third World and developed world with forecasts for the year 2000 based on problems faced by the developing world. 9. Minerals at cross roads of International Interdependence. 10. Philosophical, realistic, traditional and modern strategies for mineral development. The dynamic economic system opera- tion in national mineral sector.

The Sunrise deposit is one of AustraliaÆs largest and most profitable gold deposits. It has consistently and spectacularly outperformed every resource model created. Currently over the life of the Sunrise pit there has been a 50 per cent under estimation of ounces mined. Without a solid basis for predicting the tonnes and grade or the spatial location of mineralisation, mine planning becomes problematic. Recently, through a better understanding of the mineralising processes the reconciliation of the resource model has improved to be in the order of ten per cent under on ounces mined. This paper will describe how the mine geologists at Placer Granny Smith have implemented the changes required to improve the resource model. Work began with the development of a three-dimensional lithological and structural model based on historical drilling and pit mapping. Continual updating of the geological model with grade control logging, assays and in pit face mapping, now allows for the on-going improvement of the resource model and the planning of mine development drilling.

ILZRO sights are locked securely on the targets of the expanded applications and ever-improving quality in the major market for zinc-coated steel. Practical manufacturing issues remain at the forefront of ILZRO priorities, with research emphasis on cutting and welding zinc-coated steel to provide direct assistance towards improved product quality and a more secure market. Moving to the arena of die casting, when the specifier looks to zinc to fill a design need, ILZRO-sponsored research projects provide comprehensive documentation on metallurgical characteristics for every zinc alloy under almost any imaginable application. On-going ILZRO-sponsored research is integrating this wealth of data with sophisticated computer programs that model die-casting designs with ever-increasing accuracy, as other ILZRO projects lay the market groundwork for zinc in applications ranging from vibration damping to electromagnetic shielding.

The Rum Jungle Uranium Province is lo cated on the western margin of the Pine Creek Geosyncline approximately 60km south of Darwin. Uranium was discovered in the Embayment area (Whites Deposit) in 1949, spurring active ex- ploration and leading to the discovery of the Rum Jungle Creek South Deposit in 1959. With the discovery of the Alligator Rivers Uranium Field, new criteria in the understanding of the controls for mineralization sparked a re- surgence of exploration activities in the Rum Jungle area. Uranerz Australia Pty. Ltd. (UAL) commenced exploration in the area in the late 1970's in joint venture and in its own right. Two domal Archaean granitic complexes, the Rum Jungle and Waterhouse Complexes, domi- nate the area. They are unconformably mantled by Lower Proterozoic sediments metamorphosed to middle to upper greenschist grade. The Lower Proterozoic sediments are unconformably over- lain by remnant blocks of Carpentarian sand- stone, generally preserved in downfaulted blocks. Over a six year period extensive geolo- gical, geochemical and geophysical programs were conducted to reinvestigate previous target areas and locate new prospective zones. Exten- sive shallow bedrock drilling showed that lo- cally the stratigraphic succession is quite variable and cannot always be divided into an ordered succession for correlation with groups and formations established by the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR). Deformational events resulting in intraformational recumbent folding and overthrusting also account for repetition of certain lithotypes.

The present study attempts to critically review the pillar-design as required by Coal Mines Regulations of India vis-a-vis latest rockmechanics formulae. Equivalent material modelling was the approach adopted for testing the safety and stability of the pillar sizes predicted by various formulae. Two parameters, considered here for calculating pillar sizes was the stresses acting over the pillars and the strength of the pillars. Stresses acting on the pillars were calculated by the tributary area method. Based on the studies of Coates and Hustrulid, the stress obtained was reduced by 40 percent. For calculating the strength of the pillars, three formulae, namely Holland and Gaddy, Salamon and Munro and Central Mining Research Station, India, were used. The pillar widths were then determined by equating the product of recommended factor of safety and pillar stress with the pillar Strength.

Since the advent of plate tectonic modelling, the Ramu-Markham valley has been thought the site of a classical island-arc/conti- nent collision zone. In this interpretation the units south of the Markham Valley are held to be island are / micrcontinental mate- rial accreted to Australia and those north of the valley are thought to represent a separate Finisterre island-arc terrane. Recent remapping by the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea shows: (1) there is no terrane boundary along the Ramu-Markham valley (2) the Finisterre Volcanics are probably part of either a fore-arc sequence or oceanic plateau obducted onto a microcontinent/ volcanic-arc composite terrane, accreted to the continental Australian plate. A new tectonic model is proposed for northern PNG and involves: (I) Eocene to Late Oligocene subduction below a microcontinent remote from Australia to produce the Sepik are and related intrusives, the Finisterre Volcanics (fore-arc or possible oce- anic plateau), together with the Alife blueschist. (2) obduction of the Sepik arc in Late Oligocene-Early Miocene times over the advancing Australian plate. This resulted in crustal melting, some of the products of which are the Mid- dle to Late Miocene Akuna and Bismarck intrusive complexes of the Maramuni arc. (3) obduction of the Finisterre Volcanics began in Early Pliocene times and continues today. (4) post-Middle Miocene mineralisation is the result of melting after obduction of the Sepik microcontinent.

A sample of pyrrhotite flotation concentrate pulp assaying 15.3 g/t An, which had been prepared from an old tailing dump, was treated to extract the gold. Examination of the concentrate with an SEM showed that exposed or free native gold, 5-40 ¦m in diameter, was present but no locked gold was observed. Direct cyanidation of the concentrate to extract the gold showed that the flotation reagents present inhibited gold extraction. A range of pre-treatments was used to overcome these effects.Direct cyanidation for 48 h extracted only 26% of the gold, indicating possible contamination of the gold in the concentrate with flotation reagents. Pre-treatment of the concentrate pulp by aeration for 24 h, or by 72 h aeration with an addition of 3.65 kg/t of sodium sulphite, gave little improvement in gold extraction by subsequent cyanidation. Pre-treatment by filtration, or by aeration with 12.5 L/t 100 volume hydrogen peroxide, followed by cyanidation for 48 h gave gold extractions in the range 67-77%. Combining filtration and an aeration period with hydrogen peroxide addition raised the subsequent cyanidation extraction of gold to 88%, giving a tailing assaying 1.5 g/t Au.

PT Freeport Indonesia, a subsidiary of New Orleans-based Freeport McMoran Copper and Gold of New Orleans, operates a large mining complex on the Western half of the Island of New Guinea in Tembagapura, Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The IOZ (Intermediate Ore Zone) mine, one of the underground orebodies, is mined by block caving. The area affected by the cave collects a large quantity of rain and ground waters mixing with fine rock particles. The mixture, commonly called æwet muckÆ, sometimes spills into drawpoints and makes the working environment hazardous to the loader operators. Wet muck is observed in an increasing number of drawpoints in the IOZ mine and remote LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) technology has been implemented to handle the ore. The driving force for this automation project has been the safety of the loader operators. The system has been developed mainly in-house and incorporates state-of-the-art features. Up to eight remote loaders and nine rock breakers are controlled from an underground control room located approximately 400 metres from the active extraction panels. The two underground crushers and nine conveyor feeders are also operated remotely from an adjacent control room. The development of FreeportÆs remote system has taken time and considerable effort. Not only the success of the IOZ mine was at stake but also the fulfillment of environmental commitments pertaining to the mill tailings. Approximately eight per cent of the mill feed must come from underground skarn deposits to neutralise the acid-generating tailings generated by the huge Grasberg open pit ores.
