The introduction of a new mining method to Australia is not without its risks and challenges. This paper discusses the processes of planning a new operation, with particular emphasis on block caving and its Northparkes adaptation. As well as applying advanced technologies, here also is the opportunity to develop the art and science of block caving for its application to a wider range of geotechnical conditions than previously Envisaged.

Any hypothesis for the origin of the Otago gold-quartz lodes must account for the following observations. 1. Southeast of Glenorchy, where the schists hosting the lodes are comparatively unaffected by Neogene Alpine Fault deformation, the dominant strike of the vein systems is NW-SE, parallel to the axis of greatest post-metamorphic uplift in the Otago Schist belt (Paterson, 1986). 2. The lodes are fault-hosted, with some developed along steep, low-displacement normal faults (eg Barewood, Bendigo, Nenthorn), implying NE-SW extension, and some developed along low-angle thrusts (eg Macraes) implying, in apparent contradiction, NE-SW contraction (Teagle et al, 1990). 3. The mineralising fluid was of metamorphic origin (McKeag and Craw, 1989), but while some of the lodes developed in a mesothermal environment at considerable depth (eg ~10 km for Macraes), others appear to have formed at very shallow depth (eg <1 km for Nenthorn) (Craw and Norris, 1988). 4. The timing of the mineralisation is generally poorly constrained but postdates the main Rangitata schist metamorphism. It probably initiated during early Cretaceous exhumation and unroofing of the schist belt (140 - 120 Ma?) and may have continued well into the Tertiary (Craw, 1989). Estimates for the relative ages of the different lodes are largely speculative but, based on pressure estimates from fluid inclusion studies, Macraes likely represents the deepest and oldest lode system while Nenthorn (just 12 km to the southwest) is perhaps the shallowest and youngest (Craw and Norris, 1988).

The particle dynamics of a mixture of coal and zircon system wasstudied in a scaled-down cold model of an industrial kiln. Thefactors investigated in the study were rotational speed (N),zircon-to-coal feed ratio (B), coal particle size (dpc) and the angle of inclination (*) of the kiln. The technique used is the residence time distribution (RTD) method. It was found that rotational speed and angle of inclination are important parameters that affect the residence time of particles in the kiln. A mathematical model for predicting the mean residence time of particles in the rotary kiln was developed. Comparisons with reported models for such systems are discussed.

The efficiency of any iron ore value-adding operation is closely associated with detailed knowledge of the mineralogy, especially in the processing of lower grade and complex ores. There are a number of physico-chemical properties of iron oxide mineral phases (eg goethite, hematite and magnetite) that can be prudently exploited to enhance their processing efficiency. Recent iron ore studies on the upgrading of high-goethite iron ores have highlighted that the knowledge of the various phases of both iron oxide and gangue minerals is critical to the economic processing of these ores. Appropriate knowledge of this kind can lead to better-designed flow sheets for economically viable production of saleable products. With the increasing use of goethitic materials as blend components of iron ore concentrates for steelmaking, this review paper focuses on relevant beneficiation processes and the pivotal role of mineralogy and petrology in producing saleable iron oxide concentrates from ore blends. For goethites, mineral impurities including silica, phosphorus and alumina are very important. Physical separations, as well as those incorporating higher temperatures, have also been included in this review as potential processes to upgrade high-goethite ores.CITATION:Quast, K, Addai-Mensah, J and W, Skinner, 2017. The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences' Mineral Resources Programme is currently carrying out research under two major projects:   HAREM (Hauraki Andesite Rhyolite Epithennal Mineralisation) The Hauraki Goldfield lies within a belt of andesite-dacite-rhyolite volcanics of Miocene Pliocene age which is underlain by a basement of Mesozoic greywacke. It contains some 50 separate epithermal gold deposits and is a world-class gold and silver producer. The HAREM project is aimed at improving models of the epithermal gold mineralisation, and to better understand the processes and controls of origin, transport and deposition of the gold.   MARGO - (Marlborough Gold) The MARGO project is aimed at determining the geological factors that controlled the formation of the Mesozoic mesothermal gold-antimony-tungsten deposits in the Marlborough Schist belt. Following reconnaissance work on 12 deposits, our current work is concentrated on deposits in the Wakamarina valley.

Brunswick Mine, one of the largest underground zinc mines in the world, is scheduled to close in 2010 after almost half a century of production. All mines eventually close; some suddenly as a result of unsustainable economic or technical conditions and others, as in our case, as a result of the depletion of the orebody. When the mine is the most significant employer and an economic driver in the region, it is key that the closure is handled in a planned, communicated, well-executed fashion. The following paper documents strategies, plans and activities that are currently taking place in order to ensure a seamless closure that satisfies all stakeholders including employees, management, regulatory bodies and the public. It is an important deliverable for the company that the good will, credibility and reputation that has been built up over the years is sustained throughout the closure process and beyond. A life of mine labour agreement with the unionised workforce, staff retention and recruiting programs, regulatory closure plans, communications and transition adjustment activities will be discussed. The use of a stage-gate style project management tool analysing the risks and key deliverables will be highlighted. It is hoped that the concepts and approaches discussed here may be of value to other operations that will be faced with closure, and its inherent challenges, in the not too distant future.

When production targets are not being reached it is essential to determine what the operating problems are so that remedial action can be taken. It is also imperative that all persons who are part of the production stream within a mining operation know and understand what the operating difficulties and delays are so that corrective action is effective. This includes the supervisors, superintendents, planning team members and managers. A new approach recently adopted at Hilton Mine to help identify these operating difficulties has been to use short-term schedules and reports known as the Daily Shift Schedule Controls (DSSC), and the Daily Weekly Operating Reports (DWOR) respectively. These control elements have enabled management and supervisory staff to accurately identify labour inefficiencies and ultimately determine capital resources.

A key issue in maintaining the mining industryÆs social contract to access community-owned resources, is the need to be able to demonstrate professional management of resource extraction and the risk associated with mining hazards. Significant failures such as disease relating to coal dust and asbestos and mine disasters such as Moura, Appin and Gretley have resulted in judicial and legislative interventions that respond to the community outcry but do not necessarily effectively manage the longer term risk in a sector driven by new technology. With the implementation of recent amendments to the Queensland Professional Engineers Act, senior engineers in all industries including the mining industry are required to be registered and to demonstrate that they have æmaintained competency in the practice of engineering in the area of engineering for which the (engineer) is ... registeredÆ. This may be facilitated through a report produced by an æAssessing EntityÆ. These entities are approved by the Minister on advice from the Board of Professional Engineers, Queensland. Engineers Australia and The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) are the two professional bodies approved as æassessing entitiesÆ charged with facilitating successful implementation of the process established by the legislation. The scope of the legislation covers engineering enterprises in Queensland and engineering activities elsewhere that may have been designed in Queensland. There is currently a challenge to determine what the necessary health and safety competencies for the mining industry are and how the maintenance of these competencies will be assessed. The different approaches taken by the two assessing entities are compared and contrasted. At the legislative level, establishing an obligation to assess professional competency is simple, but at the level of the profession, it is new ground that warrants a substantial research and development input. The challenge is to develop criteria by which the quality of such system can be assessed. The comparison is made by considering such issues as equity, effectiveness, efficiency, objectiveness and transparency. These five indicators are considered in terms of how they are applied in other sectors and how they might be applied in the mining sector.

Building and Maintaining Community Relationships   In mining terms, the town of Waihi is distinctive with the Martha mine situated right in the heart of the town. MarthaÆs central location and other mining activity nearby means there is an increased community focus on the happenings at the mine and the effects and impacts of mining. While WaihiÆs proximity to the mine is unique, all mines have a community context that they operate within.   Issues of proximity simply heighten awareness and emphasise the need for building and maintaining good community relationships. In the three years we have been working alongside the Waihi community, we have worked together with concerned and supportive residents, representatives of Newmont Waihi Gold and representatives of Hauraki District Council, to develop a collaborative framework for addressing the economic, social, environmental, cultural and spiritual wellbeing of the people of Waihi. This could not have occurred without the genuine commitment of all participants.   This collaborative focus has resulted in some tangible progress in Waihi which, in part, stems from people taking an interest in the town because the town is taking an interest in itself. As we have worked and learned within the process of building and maintaining a collaborative and sustainable community environment, we have tried to adhere to a philosophy and a set of basic principles. We believe that this approach, combined with a teachable skill set, helped to create the opportunity to develop a truly collaborative community environment which continues to grow. Our paper will describe this philosophy, these principles and the skill set that we have applied.   The application of the process in Waihi has resulted in a series of outcomes unique to Waihi. These outcomes include formation of the Waihi Community Vision committee, the Vision Waihi Trust and the subgroups set up to further the interests of particular groups, for the collective benefit of all the community.   Based on our experience of other situations, and on the way the Waihi process has developed, we believe that the identified principles and skills can be transported and used in other cultures and contexts. While the resultant outcomes may differ, the underlying principles will still apply. Progress will come from creating a sustainable environment within which the community (including residents, industry and regulatory authority) can determine its own internal relationships and the vibrant growing sense it has of itself.

Grinding and Beneficiation Characteristics of a Low-Grade Haematite Ore

Laboratory testwork was carried out on an overall orebody composite, of 2.9 per cent Cu and 4.2 per cent Zn, prepared from drill core taken from the Currawong fine-grained, copper-zinc massive sulphide deposit near Benambra in Victoria. While 90 per cent of the copper was readily recovered in a concentrate of 20 per cent Cu, after grinding to 95 per cent passing 38 microns, zinc responded poorly to conventional flowsheet/reagent regimes. Experience elsewhere with the use of reverse cleaning, to separate pyrite from sphalerite, led to a series of tests in which better (but still modest)metallurgical results were obtained. The best result was a zinc recovery of 55 per cent in a concentrate of 50.5 per cent Zn. The major loss of zinc occurred in the reverse cleaning stage where the unit recovery of zinc was similar to pilot plant results achieved at Mount Isa Mines on similar feedstock. Diagnostic mineralogy suggested that an overall zinc recovery of 70 per cent was probably the practical upper limit, at a 50 per cent Zn grade.

The problems of magnetite build-up have plagued the non-ferrous pyrometallurgical industry for many years. To better understand these problems, a study was undertaken to determine the thermodynamic variables that affect the behaviour of magnetite under different smelting conditions. Equilibration studies were performed in the nickel smelting systems of matte-gas and matte-slag(silica saturation)-gas. The relationship of thermodynamic variables such as temperature, sulphur and oxygen partial pressure and matte grade on iron and magnetite activities were calculated and the significance on smelting parameters such as metal losses and partition coefficients were defined. The experimental data from this study were employed to develop practical methods which could be used to control the build up of magnetite, as well as to obtain additional metallurgical benefits. In general, a lower sulphur partial pressure and higher temperature operation was shown to enhance the metallurgical benefits of nickel smelting by decreasing the magnetite activity. Operating in this manner can also have added benefits such as higher metal recoveries, more efficient vessel utilisation and efficiency and lower smelter emissions at equivalent or higher primary furnace matte grades.

In Australia, the term "heavy mineral deposits" is used to denote sands which contain variable but economic quantities of the minerals rutile, ilmenite and zircon, often with minor amounts of monazite and xenotime as co-products. Australia has been a significant producer of rutile, ilmenite and zircon from such sands for fifty years and has long been the leading producer of rutile and zircon. The industry had its beginnings with the mining of present day beaches in northern NSW in 1934. Early work was small scale and in some cases involved hand winning of naturally concen- trated mineral for direct export. During World War II and immediately after the industry became increasingly mechanised and by the 1970s on the east coast operated between Newcastle, NSW north to Fraser Island in Queensland. Deposits worked included present day beaches, fossil strand lines up to 5 km or more inland from the present coast and aeolian concentrations. In the mid 1950s, operations commenced on the west coast of WA, south of Perth. Western Australian mineral sands tend to be rich in ilmenite as compared to the east coast. However the WA ilmenites are lower in chrome oxide and make a better syn- thetic rutile feedstock.

For years traditional optical microscopic techniques have been used successfully to carry out mineralogical studies on processing products. Essential information could be obtained by supplementing microscopic data with X-ray powder diffraction data, chemical analyses, etc. However, most of the time the mineralogists working on plant related issues, would supply qualitative information to the metallurgists, due to quantification not being possible in the available time. Since the late-80s, the use of semi-automated to automated techniques for mineral quantification has impacted positively on the use of mineralogy for optimising processing plants. Rustenburg Platinum Mines (now Anglo Platinum) were the first mining company to purchase a Qem*Sem in 1987. With the success achieved in quantifying the minerals in the concentrator streams of the Rustenburg Platinum operations, a second instrument was purchased soon after. These instruments have proven invaluable tools in understanding the flotation behaviour of the sulfide and gangue minerals in the various reefs of the Bushveld. Restrictions in the resolution of these earlier instruments, as well as the time involved in searching for and correctly identifying the fine-grained platinum-group minerals (PGM), meant that these investigations focused on the deportment of the more abundant base metal sulfides, rather than on the actual PGM. The Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA), which became available in the late 1990s, was well suited to detect and analyse minerals occurring in trace amounts such as the PGM. Anglo Platinum was the first mining company to purchase such an instrument and now has fourteen systems operating at the AR Crown Mines site. One of the applications of these systems involves the study of feeds, concentrates and tailings from the various concentrators on a monthly basis. These routine investigations provide information on a variety of mineralogical parameters, including liberation, association, and grain size. Results are used to emphasise areas for improvement, and specifically underline those areas where improvements will have the most impact on recovery. After new or different technologies have been implemented, mineralogical characterisation of the different process streams is an essential component in the assessment of the impact of these changes on flotation performance. In addition, the knowledge is databased for future reference to draw trends across the various concentrators around the Bushveld complex, and is also used for comparative studies when plants experience high losses to tailings. Due to the success of these investigations the question was posed whether it was possible to obtain data on a daily basis, as compositing samples could hide the impact of daily events. Although the instruments currently used are suitable for a research environment, these are not ideal for mine-site implementation. For that reason Anglo Platinum, together with FEI embarked on a development program to develop a system that can be implemented on-site to measure the important mineralogical characteristics on a daily basis. Important requirements for such a system include time-to-data, ease of use and regular quality control. Highlighting some results from concentrator studies, the presentation will review the progress on the development of automated mineralogical techniques for fast, automated mineral measurements. Truck fires in a tunnel can create heat release rates (HRR) significantly higher than 100 MW. Because of a fast spread of smoke and heat the self-rescuing period is shortened significantly. Furthermore, it was experienced that firefighters are not able to approach the fire because of enormous heat and radiation. As consequence, the fire may spread to adjacent vehicles, which is reported for distances of more than 50 m. Tunnels can be damaged severely by fires and the repair works causes long closing time of tunnels. In addition to direct costs for the refurbishment of the tunnel, further economic losses will occur due to the closure time. Conventional deluge systems in Japanese and Australian road tunnels have been known since the 1960s. During the last years the research work was concentrated in the development of more effective and cost-effective solutions based on water mist technology. Orientating fire tests as well as specifications of minimum requirements were carried out within the European research project UPTUN. This basic work was extended by the safety of life in tunnels (SOLIT) research project, funded by the German government. The scope of SOLIT was not only to study the effects of water mist fire suppression systems in tunnels, but also the interactions with other safety systems, such as fire detection, passive fire protection or ventilation. Furthermore, the integration of active fire suppression systems into a holistic tunnel safety system was part of the work program. Within this research project a large-scale fire test program with more than 50 fire tests, including 25 truck fires with a potential HRR of almost 200 MW, was carried out in the test tunnel of San Pedro des Anes (Spain). Furthermore, a two-week testing and training period with the Madrid Fire Brigade was carried out after the SOLIT program. Two fundamental results were achieved during the fire tests:Primarily, water mist systems are able to control the HRR of fires in tunnels, so the atmosphere will be improved significantly. Hazardous effects of toxic smoke on people will be reduced and due to the reduction of temperatures and radiation, a firefighterÆs approach is improved significantly. Furthermore, the fire spread will be hampered and the thermal load on the building structure also be reduced. Secondarily, due to positive interactions with the ventilation system, the effectiveness of a tunnel ventilation system, longitudinal as well as semi-transversal, is increased significantly. Based on the results of the SOLIT research project, a water mist system was applied into several parts of the M30 tunnels in Madrid. As a basic principle the technical equipment and the methodology of implementation comply with the UPTUN 251 guidance, recommending minimum standards for water-based fire suppression systems in tunnels.

Most people are familiar with Euclidean dimensions: zero for a point; one for a line; two for a plane; and three for a volume. Howeverbobjects are not actually Euclidean, but lie somewhere between Euclidean æend-membersÆ with a non-integer fractal (or æfractionalÆ) dimension. The fractal dimension D is a measure of the relative importance of large versus small. Consider the trace of a coastline on a map. It has a fractal dimension (1 =D =2) somewhere between a line (dimension = 1) and a plane (dimension = 2). The more tortuous the coastline, the higher the fractal dimension, and the closer it becomes towards a plane. The concepts of fractals and spatial geometry can be applied to a wide range of geologicaVmining problems as well as than those dealing with space. One commonly quoted fractal relation is the log-log relationship of ore-grade and tonnage. Until recently, we have never been able to define or measure spatial-geometry, but new developments in mathematics have provided a means by which to quantity and apply it to our problems.

Several years of operating experience of over 100 gold recovery operations on the West Coast has provided a database from which the basic operating costs of these types of operations can be characterised. Using figures generated from the averaging of plant operating costs throughout the region and financial modelling using Lotus spreadsheets has been developed to analyse both existing and proposed developments. This type of modelling has several uses: 1. Identification of the impact on profitability of changes in management practices, finance costs, operating costs and revenue streams. 2. Project evaluation and planning. 3. Profitability projections for development financing. 4. Troubleshooting with existing operations. 5. Valuation of existing operations and properties.
