llmenite from the west coast of the South Island, New Zealand, shows exceptional reactivity with dilute sulphuric acid. Based on this, a cyclic acid leaching process was developed for the production of material with more than 98% TiO2, suitable as a substitute for mineral rutile.Titanium hydrate is recovered from the leach liquor by hydrolysis, and is calcined to give the required product.Ferrous sulphate is crystallized from the hydrolysis filtrates, which after concentration are returned to the leaching stage. The need for further evaluation of the process on a larger scale is indicated.

IF a straight line should be drawn on the map (See 1, page 96) through the northern half of the South Island of New Zealand, from Mt. Domett in the north to Arthur's Pass in the south, and another line drawn parallel to it and at a distance of ten miles to the west, according to the topographic scale, it will be found that within the belt thus drawn across the country all the most important mines, past and present, of the South Island are situated, with the exception of a few in Otago.The most important product of this tract being gold, and Reefton, the most important southern mining field, being situated at about its central portion, the zone may aptly be termed "The Great Reefton Gold Belt." Resonance re-emission from nickel vapour affords a convenient method for isolating the resonance lines at 3415A, 3515A, and 3524A. The vapour is generated by cathodic sputtering and is illuminated by light from a nickel atomic spectral lamp. The resonance lines thus isolated can be usefully employed for absorption measurements on mineral samples where the nickel concentration is too high for measurements with the more sensitive line at 2320A. A spectrophotometer employing a resonance lamp as monochromator possesses several advantages where a great number of determinations are made under routine conditions. The wavelength setting is stable under even the most rigorous conditions and with the provision for automatic setting of full scale deflection the instrument requires virtually no adjustment. The instrument has been used under routine conditions for the determination of nickel (in the range O· 05-2 per cent) in mineral samples.

The rapid advance in the adaptation of scientific knowledge to the treatment of ores, resulting in improved chemical and metallurgical processes, has enormously increased the possibility of working lodes profitably, which a few years ago were passed over as unpayable. By the discovery of chlorination, and later of "Cyanidation," by the highly improved methods of concentration, and by the rapid advance in our knowledge of smelting (for which we are greatly indebted to Americanmetallurgists), and by the gradual replacement of scientifing principles and enlightened management, for rule-of-thumb methods formerly in vogue, many large low grade bodies have been opened, and are now paying dividends, which were,twenty years ago, looked upon as hopelessly unpayable. The subject which I have chosen for my paper is one that I am sure has occurred to the minds of nearly every mining man on these goldfields at some time or other. I refer to the carrying out of hydraulic mining on a fairly large scale on some ofthe alluvial areas of the West Australian goldfields. There are many, no doubt, who have the question ready at the present moment, "But where is the water coming from? " However, the great difficulties in the way are not due to the want of natural facilities, but due to the fact that sufficiently large areas cannot be leased for this purpose under the present Mining Act. Now, ever since the inception of the West Australian goldfields there has been the old familiar cry when referring to some alluvial gully or flat, "I wish I had a head of water to sluice that ground," but what seems an impossibility at times can be brought to a very great possibility by the use of a little thought and the expenditure of the necessary capital. This is so as regards West Australia with sluicing which, in spite of the its having so many detractors, can be carried out successfully in certain localities if the ordinary facilities on the part of the Govenment are given, and on the other hand the necessary capital is supplied. Alluvial gold areas, I propose now to draw your attention to first of all, the numerous alluvial areas that exist around Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie, Bulong, Kurnalpi and many other centres. Pyrite is ubiquitous within copper ores, and presents significant challenges to most operations in terms of its impact on copper sulfide concentrate grade and recovery.Samples of ore containing from 3 to 47 percent pyrite, with nominally the same chalcopyrite feed grade, were collected from a copper mine in eastern Australia for testing. The ores were ground under standard conditions using forged steel grinding media in the Magotteaux Mill® to determine the impact of increasing pyrite feed grade on the pulp chemistry of the system and subsequent rougher flotation response. Attempts were made to correlate the pulp chemical parameters (oxygen demand and EDTA extractable metal ions) with flotation behaviour to determine if one (or more) could be used as a metric to infer metallurgical behaviour.The observations made were then tested under different grinding environments (obtained using more electrochemically inert high chromium) grinding media to determine if they hold true.CITATION:Greet, C J, Karageorgos, P and Teixeira, L, 2015. Amongst the unavoidable studies of the mining engineer who desires to reach the maximum efficiency, is the subject of patents. With the fundamental principles of the patent laws of this and other leading countries he should of course befamiliar, but still more should he keep abreast of that practical knowledge which will enable him to act or advise wisely when the patenting of a new invention, or the sale, purchasing, or adoption of a new patented machine or process becomes amatter for consideration. As every engineer worthy of the name is an inventor and more particularly every mining engineer he has a direct interest in watching the progress of legislation and administration concerning patent monopolies.His worldly prospects may indeed, to a considerable extent, depend upon the defeat of bad patent laws and the removal of incompetent officials, or the appointment of better ones. Better patent administration is always in Australia a valid requirement, and until engineers generally take up and press the demand, bad administration is likely to continue. Even though every engineer is not a patentee, nevertheless his interests in patents must always be direct and powerful, and ignorance or apathy in regard thereto must inevitably injure either his own interests or those of his employer. OK Tedi Mining Ltd. (OTML) is in the process of optimising the concentrator performance. One aspect that has been recently implemented is an upgrade of the existing expert control philosophy on the grinding circuit and this will be the topic of this paper. Ore grinding in SAG mills is a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) process subject to several disturbances, most typical being quick acting disturbances such as changes in ore characteristics like hardness and particle size and slow acting disturbances such as ball charge variations and liner wear. The OTML SAG mills treat ore from diverse ore bodies and receive fresh feed subject to large changes in particle size. These circumstances make these mills particularly challenging to control. In this paper, a comparative analysis is presented between the performance of the OTML SAG mill #2 before and after the commissioning of a hybrid control strategy. The strategy uses Expert Knowledge combined with advanced disturbance rejection to reduce the variability of the main process variables, especially pressure and power. It further optimises the overall operation by driving the SAG mill #2 against process constraints (e.g. high power, high motor temperature and high scats recycle rate) and maintaining the operation at or near this point. This strategy is implemented by a combination of the manipulated variables (i.e. fresh feed tonnage and % solids) at any given time.The paper will present trends and a statistical analysis of the comparative results of the mill operation over a period of months, showing a 30% reduction in mill power / pressure variability and a 12% improvement in average power drawn. An increase in throughput was also observed, but cannot be conclusively attributed to the change in mill control due to other changes that were made to the SAG mill #2 during the period of comparison. Best practice gold (Au) recovery is not an accident. It is the result of proper operation of the adsorption circuit using good quality activated carbon. A conventional carbon ‘regeneration’ kiln cannot process carbon fouled with floatation chemicals and achieve best practice gold recovery. A high temperature, controlled atmosphere carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln is required. Carbon circuit design allows for low quality carbon by increasing the carbon advance rate, carbon inventory and setting an easily achieved and commercially prudent solution tails target of typically 0.02 ppm Au. These design criteria are important to ensure the commercial success of the gold operation in the first instance. Most carbon ‘regeneration’ kilns will produce carbon of sufficient quality to achieve a 0.02 ppm Au solution tail in the absence of flotation reagents.Best practice recovery is considered less than 0.005 ppm Au in solution reporting to tails. If the carbon is heavily fouled, as it will be if used for flotation leach circuits, then a conventional carbon ‘regeneration’ kiln cannot achieve world’s best practice recovery no matter how much carbon is advanced. World’s best practice gold recovery requires a carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln and the whole of the carbon circuit operated optimally.The competing reactions occurring in a carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln are presented and discussed in terms of kiln design and operation. New industrial and laboratory findings are presented to fill gaps in the body of knowledge and identify that a large reduction in residence time at temperature will not significantly impair reactivation, but can significantly reduce the size and cost of the kiln or permit significantly increased carbon throughput.The carbon circuit performance is modelled in terms of gold adsorption, as a function of carbon reactivation using ‘simulation of carbon-in-leach/carbon-in-pulp circuits’ (SIMCIL). An optimum carbon advance rate is identified as a function of optimum carbon ‘reactivation’ kiln operation to achieve 0.005 ppm Au in the tails solution. THE old mill erected by the .Irvinebank Company consisted of 10 heads of stamps (850 lb.), rock-breaker, Hartz jig, two Krupp tables, two Luhrig vanners, three sand-pumps, one mixer; six flotation vessels, and the necessary settlers. Power was supplied by a small colonial-type boiler, and 10-in. x 15-in Tangye engines. The ore was darted from the mines to the mill and hand-fed, into the rock-breaker, and the broken product elevated into the batter bins and fed into the stamps, the pulp from the stamps passing to a classifier, the spigot to jig, tables, and vanners, the overflow from the classifier passing to settlers. After the removal of bismuth-wolfram concentrates, the pulp was pumped to the molybdenite flotation plant and the olybdenite recovered by flotation.A commencement was made with the erection of the first unit (20 heads) of the new mill in August, 1917, and milling and concentrating commenced in February, 1919.

The consideration of environmental constraints and issues is a fundamental component of all stages of planning, development, operation and decommissioning mining and quarrying projects. Provision needs to be made at all stages for the cost of environmental components since it is of fundamental importance that they be recognised as an integral component of any project. Same-batch and non-blind as well as blind pulp duplicates are often submitted as quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) control samples to a routine laboratory along with routine assays (and other control samples such as reference material samples). The current ways of interpreting the results of duplicate assays to derive QA/QC conclusions and decisions, however, has not yet been formalised in a scientific manner. The current, prevailing approach and its limitations are reviewed and a new method is proposed as a substitute tool. This new tool should allow for operational error detection on a batch per batch basis (ie batch rejection) as well as laboratory performance assessment with time on reproducibility.

The Bosphorus Rail Tunnel Project, located in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to provide a Euro-Asian rail link, via an immersed tube tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait, along which will run all commuter, freight and intercity passenger trains of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), as well as the future extension to the European rail network. The total length of upgrading and new railway construction will be approximately 76 km. The main structures include the immersed tube tunnel; mechanised shield tunnels; new Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) tunnels; cut-and-cover, at-grade and retained-cut/fill structures; and some service structures. This paper discusses Phase 1 implementation of the project, one of the major transportation infrastructure projects in the world today, whose varied structures present stimulating engineering and construction challenges.

B. P. Thomson (South Aust. Dept. of Mines): Dr. A. B. Edwards presents in the published discussion on the above paper, his interpretation of the dolerite dyke-lode relationship as a major objection to the syngenetic origin for Broken Hill ore bodies to which Mr. Condon subscribes.Dr. Edwards claims that the dyke-lode relationships indicate clearly that the Broken Hill orebody was formed after the folding and regional metamorphism of the Willyama Series. Field evidence compels m:e to join with H. F. King (1958), in finding this conclusion unacceptable-as follows:(1) Broken Hill type mineralization, as defined by King and Thomson (1953), is clearly confined by the regional sillimanite isograd and does not extend into the lower temperature almandine and biotite zones as does the Thackaringa type mineralization.(2) In the Corruga area the writer has mapped a dolerite dyke apparently cutting a conformable quartz gahnite lode of the Broken Hill type (see Edwards 1958, p. 12).(3) At the Champion mine a similar lode is cut by a fine grained granite dyke.An alternative history of the dolerite dykes to that given by Stillwell & Edwards (1956, p. 26) appears possible. It has been suggested by the writer in an unpublished thesis, (Thomson 1955, p. 30), that the pyroxenite and serpentine plugs and dolerite dykes are rheomorphic end-products of a complex regional metamorphic and metasomatic process involving the formation of amphibolite and pegmatite. The analogy in composition between the dolerite and normal amphibolite is close (see Edwards 1958, Fig. 1, p. 22).

As it is my opinion that deep alluvial mining in Victoria and in the Murray Flats in New South Wales is practically in its infancy, and considering that we, the old school of alluvial miners, who have thirty or forty years' experience to guide us, must in the natural order of things hand over the management of our mine, to the younger and less experienced' generation of miners, I thought that as our Association has been formed for the purpose of disseminating information and the exchange of ideas, a few notes on the practical working of alluvial mines might be of some service to aspirants for the position of mining manager.The greatest difficulty the alluvial miner has to contend against is the immense quantity of water contained in the drifts overlying the wash in the gutters or ancient river beds, and to cope with this water successfully and economically is the point to be aimed at by our mining managers; and if they thoroughly understand this part of their business in all its details, they will not only win kudos for themselves, but will be the means of saving large sums of money to the companies they represent, and, in many instances, will make a success of a venture which otherwise might be stopped for want of funds before it is properly proved. At the present time, although we have had over forty years' experience indraining the deep leads of the colony, I regret to say that a large amount of ignorance still prevails amongst both directors and managers.

Analyses of scheelite from all the known scheelite fields in the South Island of New Zealand have shown that the scheelites are essentially molybdenum-free. The scheelites are almost stoichiometric CaWO4, except for some strontium replacing the calcium, with a maximum of 0·92 per cent SrO. Variation in strontium content appears to be' related to the metamorphic grade of the enclosing rocks.

Used in conjunction with geology and geophysics, geochemistry provides powerful exploration tools of special relevance to Australian environments. New methods are needed that will confront the forthcoming emphasis on locating concealed orebodies. Deep weathering is conducive to techniques using groundwaters or gaseous emanations as sample media. Increasing use is anticipated for isotope measurements and for recognition of country rock characteristics that denote proximity to mineralization. Improvements in the sensitivity, reliability and portability of analytical instruments will underpin the contributions of geochemical methods to future mineral exploration.

Most operations, when considering their comminution circuit, are primarily concerned with achieving the desired particle size distribution to obtain adequate liberation for the separation process, at minimum cost. Invariably, the effect the grinding media has on the subsequent separation process (ie flotation, leaching) is not taken into account when selecting the media. This choice is driven by cost rather than metallurgical outcomes. Maximising valuable mineral recovery, with optimum selectivity against gangue minerals, is about good particle preparation. And, particle preparation is strongly related to achieving adequate mineral liberation with the correct pulp chemical conditions. However, the pulp chemistry of a system is largely ignored and relies heavily on pH control and the addition of appropriate reagents (collectors, frothers, activators, depressants). The changes effected by the addition of the various reagents are obtained through conditioning the ground pulp prior to or during the concentration stage, subsequent to grinding. Frequently, reagents are added during grinding with good effect, but the impact of the grinding media on down stream processing is usually overlooked. A number of case studies examining the effect of grinding media on pulp chemistry and subsequent flotation performance were completed on several different sulfide mineral systems (for example, lead/zinc, copper, refractory gold). The evidence suggests that a change in grinding media type from forged to high chrome (ie conditioning the pulp during grinding) resulted in a shift in pulp Eh to less reducing conditions, an increase in the dissolved oxygen content of the pulp and a reduction in the iron species present. The changes have a positive impact on flotation behaviour. The results of the case studies are discussed.
