As it is probable that a large proportion of the members of the Institute attending this meeting are connected with the metalliferous side of mining, the writer thought that, as coal and coke are required for various purposes in considerable quantities by their companies, some particulars of the coal industry might be of interest, especially when visiting such an important coal-mining centre as Newcastle. It is proposed to deal with the matter from the mining and economic point of view, as the geology has been so well and exhaustively dealt with in various publications referred to in the bibliography at the end of this paper. In the immediate vicinity of the city of Newcastle the collieries are gradually being abandoned, and during the past few years the Wickham and Bullock Island, Stockton, Hetton, Newcastle Coal Mining Company's "B," and the Australian Agricultural Co's Sea pit, have disappeared from the coal-producing list of collieries. AIl of these collieries worked the Borehole seam, from which, up to date, the largest quantity of coal has been produced in the northern district.It is the bottom seam of any present commercial value in the Upper or Newcastle coal-measures, and although the coal-in this seam has not been entirely 'exhausted in the collieries referred to, they have been abandoned for various reasons. The ~2500 km long Kermadec-Tonga arc northeast ofNew Zealand is the longest continuous intraoceanic arc in the world. At least 94 volcanic centres along the arc are submarine, most (87 per cent) within the Kermadec arc (de Ronde et al, 2003a). Volcanic rocks range from basalt to rhyodacite with trace element and isotopic data indicating significant magma source heterogeneity both along and across the arc.   The entire ~1300 km of the Kermadec arc has now been surveyed for hydrothermal emissions (de Ronde et al, 2004). First-stage surveys utilised surface vessels. In February 1996, the first sulfide samples from the southern Kermadec arc were dredged from the Brothers and Rumble II West caldera volcanoes (R/V Tangaroa cruise TAN96/03; Wright et al, 1998; de Ronde et al, 2003b). In September 1998, low-temperature, diffuse venting was discovered at Monowai, Rumble III and Clark volcanoes, and high-temperature, black smoker venting was found within Brothers caldera (R/V Sonne cruise SO-135; Stoffers et al, 1999). The NZAPLUME cruise of March 1999 surveyed 13 volcanic centres (each mainly comprised of single, large volcanoes) of the southern Kermadec arc and documented hydrothermal emissions above seven of them (de Ronde et al, 2001; Baker et al, 2003; Massoth et al, 2003). In July 2001, additional mineralised and hydrothermally altered samples were dredged from Brothers volcano (R/V Tangaroa cruise TAN01/07). The NZAPLUME II cruise of May 2002 confirmed venting was still occurring at all the known hydrothermal sites, and that ten active vent sites occurred along the mid-part of the arc, between Brothers and Raoul Island (de Ronde et al, 2002). In September-October 2004, NZAPLUME III surveyed the northern-most part of the Kermadec arc where another nine volcanic centres are hydrothermally active.   Second-stage exploration of the Kermadec arc hydrothermal systems utilised deep submergence vehicles. In October-November 2004, the Japanese submersible Shinkai 6500 made four dives on Brothers. Samples recovered include vent fluids, chimneys, altered rocks and various animals and microbes. In April-May 2005, a more extensive expedition using the American submersible Pisces V made 23 dives on nine different volcanic centres, eight of them for the first time.   Extensive plume surveys show Brothers volcano is host to the most hydrothermally active sites of all those known along the Kermadec arc. In total, nine dives have been made on Brothers, six on the NW caldera site and three on the cone site. The NW caldera vent site is a long-term hydrothermal system that is today dominated by evolved seawater but has had episodic injections of magmatic fluid. The cone site is a nascent magmatic-hydrothermal system where crack zones localise upwelling acidic waters (de Ronde et al, 2005). A SE caldera site represents the main upflow of a relatively well-established magmatic-hydrothermal system on the seafloor where sulfide-rich chimneys are extant. Each of these different vent sites represent diverse parts of an evolving hydrothermal system, any one of which may be typical of submarine volcanic arcs.

IT is not intended that this paper should be regarded as an account of the geology of the Lyell district. It is merely a synopsis of some of the conclusions recently arrived at in regard to the stratigraphic and structural geology, compiled to act as a guide to those members of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy attending the Queenstown meeting who are interested in economic geology. The attempt has been made to present certain salient features, omitting a mass of detail, which, although important in the complete investigation and understanding of the economic geology, yet would be confusing to a group of geologists making a short visit. In an environment of accelerating capital costs, limited capital availability and strongly cyclic metal prices, there is a difference between a robust mining and processing operation and one that would maximise shareholder returns in an idealised world. A higher cut-off grade policy is likely to improve operating margins and may reduce the scale of operations and thus limit capital exposure. Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements commenced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and compared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise cleanup effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Programmable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

Differentiation of a basaltic (?) magma occurred in an active volcanic area during the late Miocene and Pliocene, and a change in the general mode of extrusion from fissure flow for the basalt to explosion for the andesite reflects an accompanying increasing magmatic viscosity. A caldera formed after the flow phase was completed and was filled with coarse agglomerate, much of which has a fused appearance. After an erosion interval its shape was modified and it became gradually deeper as repeated explosions from growing andesitic volcanoes caused large quantities of pyroclastic material to be deposited. At the close of this phase the floor abruptly collapsed when a, large block of the underlying crust was engulfed. The incompetent pyroclastics filling the caldera steepened in dip and the ensuing fractures were filled by the rising magma as dykes and sills and a chonolith formed below the caldera at a shallow depth. The ensuing activity reveals a further stage in differentiation and biotite is an important new ferromagnesian to be observed in the new rocks.Fracturing of the surrounding basalts was most intense in the rocks forming the periphery of the caldera where steeply and flatly dipping faults resulted from increasing horizontal pressure directed towards the caldera.Further differentiation resulted in the increased crystallization of orthoclase felspar, as evidenced by the numerous intrusives of trachy andesitic composition. Magmatic freezing caused mineralizers to accumulate at the top of the chonolith. These eventually escaped and auriferous pyrites, tellurides, quartz, and calcite were deposited in the surrounding rocks.The flatly dipping fractures are the most important and can be expected at various depths in a zone about 4,000 ft wide surrounding the caldera. Latest movement along these was controlled by magmatic consolidation rather than the shape of the caldera. Some flat faults were able to remain open during mineralization and acted as a feeder for the shallower fractures, thus limiting the depths to which the steeper dipping fractures were mineralized with the possible exception of one particular Nw.-striking lode (the Crown-Crescent).INTRODUCTIONThe gold deposits of the Tavua district were discovered in 1932 and from 1935 to June, 1961, 1,985,041 fine ounces of gold were produced from 4,202,504 tons of ore. The removal of a horizontal piIlar between Nos. 9 and 11 levels (1,116 feet from the collar of main shaft) was successfully carried out by blast hole drilling, and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this mass blast of 40,000 tons of ore (requiring the use of 7,150 Ibs. of explosive and 5,385 feet of primacord) was the first occasion on which a task of this magnitude has been carried out underground in an Australian mine.Blast hole drilling was introduced by this company approximately fifteen months ago at New Cobar Mine in sub-level stoping.This experimental drilling and blasting gave very valuable information as to the correct technique to be adopted when the final plans were being prepared for the removal of the horizontal pillar at New Occidental Mine.The dimensions of this pillar were approximately 15 feet long, and from 40 to 60 feet wide, and 65 feet in depth.The block of ore extended to 35 feet above the level and 30 feet below, the upper section being partially excavated to form the bell-hole floor and grizzly chambers used for drawing off the broken ore in the shrink stope above the No. 10 level.Description of Ore-bodyThe main ore-body is situated almost vertically in a well-defined shear zone at the junction of sandstone and slate, the sandstone forming the eastern and the slate the western wall.The ore-body consists of highly silicified slate (chert) sparsely impregnated with sulphides, containing a small percentage of copper and bismuth.The total length of the ore-body is approximately 450 feet, with a maximum width of 60 feet in the main section, which is about 200 feet long.This is the section shown in longitudinal and cross-section (Fig. 1).The ore-body is divided by a horse of mullock in the northern end into two legs, the eastern and western, which are approximately 250 feet long and averaging 25 feet in width.This ore-body is strong, hard and abrasive with extremely strong walls, an ideal proposition for open stoping and mass blasting.MiningIn all levels above No. 9 the cut and fill method of ore extraction was adopted. Mineral maps produced via optical and scanning electron microscope û mineral liberation analyser (SEM-MLA) automated mineral identification systems are being used to examine the relationships between mineral phases in spatially well-constrained samples of intact and crushed rock. The use of sophisticated image analysis software allows data pertaining to individual or groups of mineral phases to be extracted from the mineral maps. Analyses of the extracted data can be used to identify populations of phases. Data extracted from the images can be compared with mineral processing data, eg hardness, grindability, degree of liberation, from the same sampling intervals, enabling ore characterisation to be linked to processing behaviours in a spatially constrained, quantified manner that can potentially assist with mine planning and optimisation.

To many Australian Mining Engineers, we take it, the singular features of banket deposits are not as familiarly known as they would wish, possibly because in the majority of instances they are not in touch with the South African milling world, and have had little opportunity of studying the development of the banket beds, either from correspondence or literature. The writer hazards this opinion feelingly, because, when in Australia and before he had visited Africa, the utmost knowledge he was able to obtnin was a mass of conflicting theoretic discussion as to the agencies which formed the banket bed, without any practical hints as to their geological horizon, the rocks with which they are associated, the usual appearance and character of the ore, in fine, without that everyday detailed description which the miner requires when seeking information regarding mineral or metal deposit foreign in character to any that he has yet studied, or as yet had any opportunity of studying in his own country.The writer recognised that many more able men than he have from time to time discussed the features and formation of the banket beds of the land, notwithstanding which and feeling that many of his Australian colleagues have found themselves in a similar position regarding accurate detailed information respecting these African banket deposits as he himself was, he hopes that the present paper on the said deposits, as found on the fields under notice, will prove useful to some and of interest to all.

Bacterial leaching of low grade quartz felspar porphyry copper ore was studied in large-scale laboratory percolation leaching columns.Limitations in the release of soluble copper showed up before fifty per cent recovery, due to occluding precipitates of iron oxides and hydroxides. Precipitates were removed by increasing the acidity of irrigation feed four-fold with respect to sulphuric acid. However, irrigation at low pH (pH 1.5) inhibited copper leaching. Resumption of bacterial leaching at pH2 was achieved by introducing a period of non-irrigation. The results suggest a 'direct' attack by bacteria on the chalcopyrite substrate rather than an 'indirect' ferric-leach mechanism.

The ball mill in closed circuit with hydrocyclones is an industry standard, and well known methodologies exist for equipment sizing, selection and design. However, the potential to improve the capacity of ball mill circuits by replacing cyclones with screens has been recognised for many years and recently has been successfully realised, thanks to developments in fine screening technology. Proper methodology for equipment sizing and selection is required to capitalise on this opportunity, but there is currently insufficient information and few guidelines available on how to design such a circuit. This paper discusses the differences between ball mill circuits closed with cyclones and with screens. A methodology is described for equipment sizing and selection for a circuit closed with screens, and the laboratory testing requirements are described for low grade base metal ores and magnetite ores. An economic evaluation is also presented for a case study demonstrating the potential benefits of closing a ball mill circuit with screens.CITATION:Jankovic, A and Valery, W, 2013. THE following notes, compiled in the first instance for the makers of rock-drIlls, were read by Mr. Hanton at a meeting of the Broken Hill Branch on 12th Septelnber, 1922. It was decided that all Broken Hill mines be asked to give their individual views on the subject, so that a comprehensive Broken Hill view could be published. Replies have been received from four (4), mines to date, and their'ideas fairly well coincide with those set out by Mr. Hapton. His notes were as follow:- "The Zinc Corporation Limited.NOTES ON ROCK-DRILL DEVELOPMENTSAs far as our present experience goes, the rock-drill developments on this mine will probably be something resembling the following. The programme is subject to modification or alteratian, according to circumstances. The results of further trials and improvements in present drills, and the design of new types, will, of course, affect any general scheme such as that outlined. It appears reasonably certain that the 3i-in. reciprocating drills which have done practically all the stoping up to date, will be gradually replaced by hammer drills of the internal water-feed type, and that the existing types of hammer drill on the mine will be converted into internal water-feed machines instead of being used as dry machine with outside jet.The ultimate types of machines will be four... Type 1 would be a machine equivalent to the Ingersoll Leyner: 248, Waugh Turbro, SullivaIi DX61, or Holman CH2. This would be used for driving, cross-cutting, and similar excavating work, and possiblyfor stoping also, and should be capable of efficiently working any class of ground. Features, apart from the general requirements set out later, would be the weight of the machine and mounting height of the machine above the seating (as this affects the convenience of boring back or bottom holes); absence of projections on the mounting which the air hose will foul as the machine is fed...

FLSmidth-Summit Valley Technologies has been a leader in gold processing equipment for nearly two decades. Over the past several years an extensive research and development effort has led to improvements in Mercury Abatement systems and process efficiency in Adsorption Desorption and Regeneration (ADR) or "Carbon" plant operations. Two technologies will be discussed that are focused on efficiency improvements followed by an explanation of Mercury Abatement systems. Gold and silver can be desorbed from carbon in several ways. FLSmidth has made significant improvements to the Pressure ZADRA process allowing for lower energy consumption and lower capital costs. This patented process is known as the Split-ZADRA Strip method. Split-ZADRA allows a plant to elute loaded carbon in a semi-continuous fashion. This increases the grade of the Pregnant Strip Solution, improves electrowinning efficiency, reduces capital equipment costs, and reduces energy requirements. During desorption and electrowinning for the Pressure ZADRA process, the pressure and temperature of the circulating strip solution is changed multiple times. A self-contained heating and cooling system has been developed which decreases the energy requirements for elution. Mercury Abatement technology has become increasingly important in recent years. Along with FLSmidth Summit Valley Technologies' complete Mercury Retorting Systems, FLS-SVT has developed systems for the capture and removal of mercury from electrowinning cell and strip solution exhaust, Carbon Regeneration exhaust, and the dore furnace exhaust. This paper describes each of the technologies introduced above and their success in operational gold and silver mines. GENTLEMEN, lt is with much pleasure I meet you tonight at this the second meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, held in Western Australia, and I sincerely thank you for the honour you have conferred upon me in electing me as your President. I greatly appreciate the distinction, and will endeavour to fulfil the duties of the office to the best of my ability, and hope to prove a worthy successor to those gentlemen who have held the position before me. On behalf of the local members of the Institute, I extend a hearty welcome to the members from the other States of the Commonwealth, who have come so far to attend this meeting, and also to the non-members whom we have invited this evening. We are especially pleased to have Mr. Gregory, our Minister of Mines and Railways, and the Government and School of Mines officials with us; and I take this opportunity to thank the Premier, Mr. Gregory, and the Government officials for the assistance given us, and for doing so much to make the visit of our members from the other States so pleasant and instructive. The ocean floor is increasingly being discussed in terms of its resource potential. New discoveries, improved knowledge and access to unexplored areas of the deep sea and continental shelf are some factors contributing to a renewed interest in the seafloor exploration and mining industry. The industry has been referred to as the ænext minerals frontierÆ. To date, much of the research has focused on proving economic and technical viability of the industry, with environmental issues addressed locally. However, there is limited research internationally, and none known in Australia that considers the social viability of the industry, addressing issues such as regulatory contexts, international precedence and public acceptability. Does the nascent seafloor exploration and mining industry have a social license to operate? Does it have support amongst the wider community? If not, why not? The Wealth from Oceans National Research Flagship explored these questions by scoping the social issues that would surround an expansion. Two desktop studies provide insight into the current level of activity in seafloor exploration and mining, recent developments and the regulatory regimes on which the industry is based. One study focused on the situation in Australia, while the other was internationally focused. A series of workshops were held with key stakeholders from government agencies, industry and other interested parties, such as environmental groups and the fisheries industry. These workshops identified and explored the different stakeholdersÆ perceptions of the benefits, concerns, opportunities and key questions associated with an expansion of the seafloor mining industry. The desktop studies revealed that Australia is one of only a few countries with legislation specific to seafloor exploration and mining. Nevertheless, barriers to licence approval exist because of lack of precedent in applying this legislation. Consequently, the decision process can be vulnerable to political issues and subjective judgements. The outcomes from the stakeholder workshops suggest this inconsistency may be influenced by the high levels of concern and uncertainty over environmental impacts. Uncertainty over environmental impacts can influence the acceptability of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and also mean the perception of risk is variable. Overall, this research suggests that the future of the seafloor exploration and mining industry will be highly dependent on AustraliaÆs ability to:improve the knowledge-base underpinning the regulatory regime,generate open and transparent communications between stakeholders, andimprove the understanding of policy and regulatory processes.

Leading Article from "British Medical Journal," London, 4th, November, 1944.Assuming that silica exerts its injurious effect upon animal tissue through a slow transformation into silicic acid, Denny, Robson, and Irwin thought that if the solubility of siliceous material retained in the lungs could be suffciently reduced the usual fibrotic response could be diminished or prevented. They discovered that aluminum powder rendered siliceous material insoluble in vitro by coating the silica particle with a thin film of gelatinous hydrated alumina, which on drying formed crystalline alpha aluminum monohydrate. The presence of this adsorbed layer on the surface of the quartz was shown by staining it with aurin. That metallic aluminum dust produced no fibrosis in the lungs was demonstrated by dust-inhalation experiments on eight rabbits. Attempts were therefore made to prevent silicosis by mixing quartz with metallic aluminum dust.Animals exposed to quartz dust developed typical silicosis in about five months, but the addition of 1 per cent. aluminum powder prevented this even after exposure had been lengthened up to 22 months, provided the aluminum powder was of a particle size below 5. This year Crombie, Blaisdell and MacPherson have reported the treatment of 34 silicotic miners by the daily inhalation of fine aluminum powder freshly ground from small aluminum pellets in a specially constructed mill. Daily treatment began with five-minute inhalations, which were gradually increased to 30 minutes. Some of the men received 300 treatments, but the majority only 200. Out of the 34 cases thus treated clinical improvement was manifested by lessening or disappearance of shortness of breath, of cough, of pain in the chest, and of fatigue. In 15 cases the condition became stationary and remained so in spite of continuous employment in silica dust throughout the treatment. The progress of the disease was assessed by means of tests for respiratory function repeated at three-monthly intervals. The Hlsmelt process uses iron ore fines and non-coking coals to produce molten pig iron suitable for feeding to BOF and EAF steelmaking vessels. The unique process configuration combines direct injection of raw materials into the molten iron bath, high rates of metal and slag mixing, and effective post-combustion of the bath gases to achieve efficient coal utilisation. This is the key to the strong economic performance of the process.
