Bromine is the intermediate member of the halogen family of elements between iodine, a solid: and chlorine, a gas. The name is derived from the Greek "bromos," meaning stench. Bromine is the only nonmetallic element that is liquid at room temperatures with a melting point of -7.2" C and a boiling point of 58.78" C. Reddish brown in color, it dissolves easily in water to yield a red solution. Bromine volatilizes at ordinary temperatures to a red vapor that is very irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat. Density of the liquid is 3.12 and gas weighs 7.59 gpl at standard conditions. As the element is highly active, it exists in nature only as bromide compounds. Bromine was discovered by Antoine Jerome Balard in seawater bitterns in 1826 and first prepared in quantity in 1860. Distribution Bromine is widely distributed in nature and compounds occur in solution in natural brines, in seawater, saline lakes, oil and gas well brines, and in evaporite chloride minerals. The concentration of bromine salts ranges from 60- 65 ppm in seawater to several thousand ppm in oil well brines and saline lakes. The distribution of bromine in marine evaporite minerals and in the solutions from which they crystallized was determined many years ago by H. E. Boeke (1 908). Theoretical aspects regarding the geochemistry of bromine have been published in numerous papers (Raup and Mite, 1969). Bromine occurs in solid solution in carnallite and sylvite associated in potash de- posits; in halite in salt beds; salt in oil shales; and in trona deposits. Its presence is useful as a guide in geochemical exploration. The analysis of small amounts of bromides in the presence of large amounts of chlorides is discussed by W. Schwerdtner (1963). Manganese, iron, and iodine may interfere with the determination. Other analytical methods are discussed at length in the literature (Stenger and Atchison, 1964). Sources and Reserves The sources and reserves of bromine, given in [Table 1], appear ample to meet present and foreseeable requirements in all producing countries. With the occurrence of bromine salts in sea-water and other brines, the potential for bromine production is worldwide. It has been estimated that 99% of all commercially recoverable bromine is in the ocean. However, actual subterranean brines having a higher bromine content than seawater will continue to be the preferred sources of bromine for the foreseeable future. Markets and Prices About 17% (1968) of bromine produced is used in its elemental form, with the balance consumed as bromides and bromates. The largest use for bromine is ethylene dibromide which, together with tetraethyl lead, are used as an antiknock additive in gasoline. Tetra-ethyl lead is the antiknock agent. Ethylene dibromide combines with the lead after combustion in the engine to form a volatile com- pound that escapes from the engine with the exhaust gases.

THE new 4800-ton fine-grinding plant at the Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines property at Timmins, in the Porcupine district of northern Ontario, went into operation in November 1937, and represents the culmination of an experimental program. The plant is a moderately low rectangular building of hollow tile on a steel frame, large enough to house four 7 by 15-ft. ball mills, with a 12 by 27-ft. classifier beside each mill. At one end is space for the addi-tion of another mill and classifier or a mill and classifier for the regrinding of table concentrates. This regrinding is now done in the old grinding department of the main mill building. Also within the new building are the four 6-in. sand pumps for lifting the product from the low-dis-charge ball mills up to the classifier feed launders and the containers and appurtenances of a complete dust-collecting system. Together with the usual overhead crane, these constitute the major units of equipment within the new plant. The location is at the lower end of the main mill buildings toward the old tailings pond, now so neatly leveled off and sodded to rival the very best of our own W.P.A. projects. Close by the new grinding plant is a large dome-shaped structure-the new fine-ore bin designed and built by Mr. Longmore and the Hollinger milling and engineering staffs. There are four separate automatically loaded inclined belt conveyors leading up from the bottom of the bin to the grinding plant. Each belt is equipped with a recording weightometer, in the grinding building. The whole structure and the machinery within it give the impression of permanence and a carefully integrated design with close attention to details, giving the operators every advantage for consistently good work.

0. C. RALSTON, Salt Lake City, Utah.-I have merely glanced over this paper, consequently, I am hardly in a position to discuss it intelligently. There is one thing, however, that is of interest, that is, the claim that the oil mixture which they have chosen is the best adapted to the work at hand. I would like to ask Mr. Mathewson if they still feel that that is the case-if that really does give the best grade of concentration and the best extraction for the same money, compared to any particular oil mixture which they could get. E. P. MATHEWSON, Anaconda, Mont.-We are still using that mixture, and we consider it the most economical mixture used. DAVID COLE, El Paso, Texas.-I would like to ask Mr. Ralston if there are some other mixtures that would be better? E. P. MATHEWSON.-We are open to suggestions. 0. C. RALSTON.-My own paper on oils* calls attention to the fact that certain hardwood oils, especially the tars, are now being burned or wasted. A great deal of hardwood tar is available as low as 4 or 5 c. per gallon, that being its value as fuel under the boilers. As a matter of fact, a great deal of testing has been done with only the commercial products that are as a usual ride sold on the market. Very little hardwood tar is sold on the market. In asking a great many people who have tested flotation oils, I have not heard hardwood tar mentioned very often. I think I would add to that that the hardwood tars can probably be bought in quantity comparable with the sludge acid at Anaconda, and. should contain a greater proportion of the frothing constituent, and at a price fairly commensurate with what they pay for the sludge acid. E. P. MATHEWSON.-I would like to make a correction in one statement I made that there has been no change made in the mixture. This change has been made: We found that the amount of wood creosote in treating the sand from tables was extremely small, and we tried some experiments on a large scale, dropping it out and using simply the sludge acid and sulphuric acid. We found that this gave practically as good results as wood creosote. We use wood creosote in treating the slimes. We find it necessary in that operation. Titanium and vanadium form a complete series of solid solutions at temperatures above 885°C. Below 885°C, vanadium is slightly soluble in a titanium (about 1.5 pct V at 650°C) and a two-phase a plus ß region extends to 18.5 pct V at 650°C. The alloys up to 15.0 pct V transform into a supersaturated a solid solution upon rapid cooling from the ß phase. Above 15 pct V the ß phase may be retained. The temperature at which the ß to a' martensite-type transformation takes place decreases steadily from 850°C for 0.5 pct V to 325°C for 12.7 pct V. IN the transition series of the periodic table, the six elements that have a body-centered cubic structure at all temperatures, namely chromium, vanadium, molybdenum, columbium, tungsten, and tantalum, fulfill the conditions required for the existence of complete series of solid solutions with the high temperature (ß) form of titanium. Up to the present time, complete solubility at temperatures above the a to ß transformation of titanium has been observed in the systems Ti-MO,1,2 Ti-Cb,2 Ti-W,³ and Ti-Ta.³ The two remaining elements, vanadium and chromium, have atomic diameters which are not as near that of titanium as the atomic diameters of the four other elements. Both are smaller than titanium and the difference, expressed in percentage of the titanium atomic diameter, is 12.3 pct for chromium and 8.2 pct for vanadium. On this basis, the least favorable conditions for solid-solution formation are therefore encountered in the Ti-Cr system. The early work on the Ti-Cr system4 revealed that up to about 1100°C the solubility of chromium in ß titanium is limited, and an intermetallic phase exists near the stoichiometric composition TiCr2. It was found later' that a continuous series of solid solutions extends across the diagram at higher temperatures, and TiCr2 forms by solid state reaction. It became apparent therefore that complete solubility would also be present in the Ti-V system. The present investigation confirms this possibility. The iodide-refined titanium used in this investigation was purchased from the New Jersey Zinc Co., New York. According to the manufacturer, a typical analysis of this product is 0.0065 pct Mn, 0.0022 pct Fe, 0.0015 pct Cu, and 0.0042 pct Pb. The Vickers hardness number (10 kg load) of the crystalline bar varies between 55 and 80. The vanadium metal was purchased from the Westinghouse Electric Corp., Lamp Div., Bloomfield, N. J. The purity of this metal is probably above 99 pct V. The oxygen content must have been quite low, since a bar about 1/4 in. square could be cold rolled into a ribbon 0.020 in. thick. To prepare the various alloys on the titanium-rich side of the diagram, the titanium rod was machined into cups 1 cm in diam and about 1.5 cm high. Pieces of vanadium, of the proper weight, were cut from the square bars and placed within the cups prior to melting. Y.-On discussing this paper I am open to the criticism of "bringing coals to Newcastle," as I, a zinc man, am bringing new ideas on steel to Pittsburgh. But still the view of an outsider can be valuable to the insider. Any multistage process, where each apparatus operates on its particular part of the work at a high efficiency, constitutes an advance in the state of art. But in multiplicity there can be complication and ensuing loss and inefficiency. The duplex steel process is not the pronounced success which was predicted for it by its adherents, for several of such plants have reverted to plain open-hearth methods. If we regard broadly refining processes, such as the Bessemer, open-hearth, puddling, copper refining, lead cupelling, nickel refining, we find that in general refining processes are intermittent and 'concentration processes are continuous. (This generalization I believe to be original with me; it was communicated to Dr. E. F. Roeber, editor, and appeared as an editorial in Metallurgical and Chemical Engineering, March, 1905.) Where we desire primarily quality in a metallurgical operation we must put a batch of metal in the furnace, work on it until we get it to the required purity, test it, and take it out; whereas, if we desire primarily quantity we shove ore into a furnace and smelt it as fast as possible, allowing conditions to make a non-uniform product provided only we get tonnage. From general commercial principles, I believe that the weak point of the duplex process is that the operation is not a money maker unless the plant is kept at. 90 to 95 per cent. of its rated capacity, or unless the Bessemerizing is done so often that it is practically continuous. For in some manner the operation should be made continuous and the control on the tonnage should be commercially flexible. The commercial rigidity of having to control purity exactly increases operating costs without a corresponding gain. Conversely, the chief reason for failure of "steel from ore direct" is that it makes a final operation continuous, which should be naturally intermittent.

Brief Economic History of Quicksilver in the United States Quicksilver ore was first discovered in the United States at what was later the New Almaden mine in California, in the year 1824. Production also began here, but not until 1850, when it was stimulated by the active demand caused by gold-mining operations. Prospecting for quicksilver was active, high-grade ores were found and ample production lowered the price from $100 per flask in 1850 to about half that figure for the greater part of the next 10 years. During the succeeding decade, many new quicksilver mines were found; production increased at a time when the local demand diminished, so that most of the product was exported. The third decade of quicksilver mining in the United States witnessed the development of the pan amalgamation process, particularly in Com-stock silver-mining operations. A suddenly increased demand sent prices soaring, the all-time peak of quicksilver production followed, and the highest price was soon replaced by the lowest one on record. Huge quantities of quicksilver were exported between 1870 and 1880 and exports continued in decreasing measure for three decades to 1910. In

Talc, when it can be isolated as a pure mineral, has a composition of 63.36% Si02, 31.89% MgO, and 4.75% H20. However, as an industrial commodity, talc rarely approaches theoretical purity. Nevertheless, the impure talc products of commerce find a multitude of uses and few substitutes in many industrial applications. Minerals commonly associated with and sold together in talcose mixtures are tremolite, chlorite, dolomite, mica, and magnesite. Steatite was originally a mineralogical name applied to pure talc. In today's commerce steatite generally refers to the massive variety of talc suitable for electrical insulator manufacture. Block steatite ore can be machined into various shapes. Impure varieties of massive or block talc are still commonly referred to as soapstone. Soft massive talc, suitable for crayon manufacture, has been referred to as French chalk. It has been common practice to discuss talc, soapstone, and pyrophyllite under the same general heading. In the case of soapstone and talc, this is a natural thing since many different types of platy, soft minerals exhibiting a high degree of lubricity (commonly referred to as "slip") have been grouped together and called soapstone or talc. Further, there is a mineralogical relationship of pyrophyllite to montmorillonite and talc to hectorite. Thus, talc and pyrophyllite are sometimes referred to as clay minerals. When finely divided talc or pyrophyllite are combined with water in proportions to make a slurry, the end product does have the appearance of a clay-water mixture. Soapstone for utensils and ornaments was mined by prehistoric Indians on Santa Catalina Island, CA. In the mid-1800s, soapstone from deposits along the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains was used by white settlers for building and ornamental stone and in the linings and foundations of furnaces (Anon. 1956). Previous to 1916, the annual recorded production in California did not exceed 2000 tons. In the period 1912 to 1918, output rose sharply when the Talc City, Western, and Silver Lake mines were put into operation. From 1916 to 1935, the state's annual output of talc was in the range of 9,000 to 20,000 tons. In the mid-1930s, the use of talc in wall tile grew rapidly. In California, the production of talc grew to 63,000 stpy in 1943. The post-war building boom helped California production to grow to 120,000 tons in 1951. In 1968, production was 165,000 tons, 1969 was 145,000 tons, 1970 was 185,000 tons, and 1972 was 155,000 tons. Talc mining in New York state dates to about 1878 when a Colonel Palmer and associates opened the first commercial talc mine on the Nelson Freeman farm near Talcville, New York. In 1893, this operation was sold to the International Pulp Co. which changed its name to the International Talc Co. in 1944. The company was acquired by R.T. Vanderbilt Co., Inc. in 1974. A new talc operation, the Gouverneur Talc Co. owned by the R.T. Vanderbilt Co., began operations near Balmat, NY, in 1948. The initial capacity of the processing plant was 200 stpd (Gillingham, 1950). Subsequent expansions have increased capacity to over 600 stpd. The Vermont talc industry began just after the start of the 20th century. Talc was discovered in the area of the present Johnson, VT, talc mine in 1902. The American Minerals Co. initiated plant operations at Johnson in 1904. The Magnesia Talc Co. opened a plant at Waterbury, VT, in 1913 (Burmeister, 1963; Trauffer, 1964) and acquired American Minerals Co. in 1923. The Waterbury mine has a long history as a producer of talc crayons. The Eastern Magnesia Talc Co. was formed in 1924 by a merger of the Eastern Talc, Co.

During the last two years, and especially during the last six months, a number of important articles upon the new methods for the desulphurization of galena have been published in the technical periodicals, particularly in the Engineering and Mining Journal and in Metallurgie. I proposed for these methods the type-name of " lime-roasting " of galena as a convenient metallurgical classification,'and this term has found some acceptance. The articles referred to have shown the great practical importance of these new processes, and the general recognition of their metallurgical and commercial value which has already been accorded to them. It is my present purpose to review broadly the changes developed by them in the metallurgy of lead, in which connection it is necessary to refer briefly to the previous state of the art.

IT is characteristic of most scientific investigators that they are not satisfied with the discovery of new facts, no matter how curious or unex-pected, but that along with the factual discovery there is a constant effort to understand. It appears that one's interest in, and satisfaction with, the discovery of an array of new experimental facts is enormously increased if one has at the same time a theory or hypothesis guiding one's expectation of what sort of new experimental discovery may lie around the corner. Conversely, as a theoretical physicist one's satisfaction with his theory is greatly enhanced if along with the development of the theory can go the discovery of new experimental facts, confirming or perhaps modifying the theory as it grows. Of course, there have been long arid stretches in the history of physics in which new data of unquestioned ultimate importance have piled up, without much inspiration or illumina-tion in the way of understanding. For 50 years spectroscopy had such an arid history, but how irksome this was felt to be is plainly shown by the almost audible relief that greeted the first success by Bohr in injecting understanding into the situation, and by the fresh rush of experimenters into this field when the prospect of understanding had once been offered. The investigations in the field of high pressure, which have occupied me for a long time,1 until the last few years have been in very much the same sort of situation as spectroscopy before the advent of Bohr. A great many kinds of data were collected for a great many solid and liquid sub-stances, and there could be no question of the importance of these data, because the uniform change of dimensions produced by hydrostatic pressure is perhaps the simplest conceivable type of alteration to which a body can be subjected. But except for a few isolated flashes, there was no theoretical illumination, so that it had to be to a large extent the enthu-siasm of the collector that kept me going. The superconducting behavior of Nb-Ti alloys containing 40 and higher wt pct of Nb and variable oxygen content was studied as a function of thermomechanical processing. Critical current density (Jc) us applied transverse magnetic field (H) data were obtained for 0.010 in. diam wires at 4.2° Kin steady fields up to 120 kOe. The precipitate responsible for increase in Jc in each of the alloys studied was related to niobium and oxygen content. In alloys containing 40 to 60 wt pct Nb with less than about 1600 ppm of oxygen, w precipitation in the range 350° to 450°C appears to be responsible for the maximum value of Jc observed. In alloys of higher oxygen content (-2500 ppm), the oxygen-enriched a phase which precipitates in the temperature range 450° to 550°C is a more effective fluxoid pinner. Maximum Jc in low oxygen (350 ppm) 80 wt pct Nb alloys was achieved by 600°C aging heat treatments. Measurements of resistive critical field also reflect the changes in composition accompanying precipitation in these alloys. It is well known that the superconducting critical current density, Jc, of solid solution superconducting alloys can be increased by precipitation heat treatments.1-4 The precipitate, to serve as an effective superconzlucting fluxoid pinner and increase Jc, must be of proper size and spacing.' Its electronic properties must also be different from those of the matrix.6 As in age-hardenable systems, optimum temperature and time of aging are dictated by the composition and history of the particular solid-solution alloy under consideration. The alloy diagram of Ti-Nb7-9 shown in Fig. 1 is typical of ß-stabilized Ti alloys. Precipitation to achieve high Jc in Ti-Nb and Ti-Ta alloys is usually carried out in what is believed to be a two-phase a + ß region.1,2,4,10 Previous work on Ti-Nb4,11 and on other ß-stabilized systems such as Ti-V, Ti-Mo,12-14 has shown, however, that the first precipitate to appear is not necessarily (Y. Under specific conditions the meta-stable w phase is precipitated instead. A further complication arises in such alloys from the strong influence of contained oxygen on the phase stability and on the kinetics of precipitation.15,16 The superconducting critical current density of Nb-Ti alloy containing less than 36 wt pct Nb has been studied by Vetrano and Boom1 and Kramer and Rhodes.4 The most effective aging temperature was found to be about 425°C; fluxoid pinning was attributed to the precipita- tion of a by Vetrano and Boom and of w by Kramer and Rhodes. Although the latter workers used recrystal-lized material and the former cold-worked, studies carried out in our laboratory lead us to believe that the type of precipitate responsible for increased Jc is unaffected by prior cold-work.17 That other types of precipitates may also be effective, especially in higher oxygen-containing alloys, has been demonstrated by Reuter, et al.2 in this laboratory with the aid of electron microscopy. Reuter et al. found that at an aging temperature of 600°C, fee-TiO is precipitated, resulting in high values of Jc. Even higher values of Jc were observed after heat treatment at 500°C, but the precipitate could not be indexed as fee-TiO. Whether the precipitate was oxygen-rich w or a could not be clearly distinguished. The work nevertheless indicates that appreciable amounts of oxygen alter the nature of the phases precipitated at different temperatures, at least in alloys containing more than 36 wt pct Nb. Since such compositions are more readily worked into suitable wire than lesser niobium content alloys, it was decided to study the response to aging of the alloy compositions reported in the present paper with the hope of clarifying the effect of composition on the precipitation processes responsible for high values of Jc. I. EXPERIMENTAL Nb-Ti alloys containing 40, 50, 60, and 80 wt pct Nb were prepared by are-melting 35 g ingots of iodide crystal bar titanium and electron-beam melted niobium.
