A number of parameters, aside from blast design and pre-existing rock conditions, can change the performance of the explosives system in actual blasting practice. Sympathetic pressures caused by detonation of preceding holes have been identified as a major contributor to explosive system malfunctions, leading to uneven blasting performance. These effects can occur both within a hole or across several holes. These can consist of high transient pressures related to the shock phase of the explosion or the relatively longer or quasi-static pressures associated with the explosion gas expansion phase. This study presents the findings from an on- going investigation on measurement and analysis of these pressures between donor and receptor holes in a granitic outcrop for representative inter-hole distances and borehole conditions, employing single cartridges of emulsion explosive in 45 mm diameter holes. The results, despite wide scatter in the measured values, show the very short duration pressures to range up to 7 MPa and arriving within a few milliseconds after detonation, whereas the much lower amplitude pressures arrive after tens of milliseconds. Both have the potential to seriously affect the performance of an explosives system.

On October 16, 1978, the Harnback open cut of Rheinische Braunkohlenwerke, the largest open cut ever planned, was officially put into operation. It will outperform all of the large open cuts known at present, both in its dimensions and in its annual output of overburden and coal. Present plans are to commence coal mining in 1983, although target production will only be achieved in 1995when the annual output will be 50 million tons of coal. Considering an overburden: coal ratio of 6: 1, this will involve the removal of approximately 300 million bank cubic metres of overburden. For overburden removal and coal mining, this open cut will use bucket-wheel excavators exclusively. It is planned to employ eight excavators with a daily output of 240,000 bank cubic metres each (Fig. 1). The transport of the overburden and coal to the dump and the power station, respectively, will be effected by 30Q0-mm-wide conveyors, running at a speed of 6 m/sec. The overburden will be dumped by spreaders having a boom length of 100 m, capable of dumping 240,000 bank cubic metres per day (Fig. 2). Such giants, of course, can only be used for extreme conditions . Their employment indicates that huge quantities of material can be handled economically for long periods. However, the use of bucket-wheel excavators is economic when daily outputs of 5,000 bank cubic metres are involved, in particular if direct backcasting of the overburden is not possible.

Compared with elsewhere in the world, New Zealand quarries have tended to be mostly small. The reasons for this are a combination of the relatively high transport costs, low population density and a pioneering, self-employed attitude. The small size of the operations is reflected in low productivity, a tendency to repair and rebuild equipment rather than replace it, designed flexibility in the processing plant, minimal reserves investigation or development planning and a versatile and innovative work force who are generally not professionally trained. The Resource Management Act and the Health, Safety and Employment Act as well as a customer driven demand for higher quality and consistent products will have even greater influence upon future direction of the Industry. The trend will be towards fewer quarries operated by companies and professional managers that can adapt to the new demands.

The first version of the longwall strata control and maintenance system (LSCMS) has been successfully developed by the Strata Control Re¬search Team at the University of Alabama. The system includes a software package designed to monitor shield leg pressure, interpret the data and predict the forthcoming roof loads and the existence of geological anomalies. It can also detect maintenance problems of the face equipment. The LSCMS was installed underground and connected to the surface terminals at Drummond's Shoal Creek Mine in Alabama. The system has proven to be a useful and practical system for improving safety and efficiency in coal-mining operation. The Shoal Creek Mine is a new, large coal mine operated by Drummond with two longwall panels. The Blue Creek seam is the primary source of coal production. It is located at a depth of 275 to 440 m (900 to 1,450 ft) below the surface with an approximate 2% southwest dip. Typical strata conditions are represented by two stratigraphic columns (Figs. la and b). A fireclay/dark shale parting (called Middleman) 0.2- 0.7-m- (1- to 2.5-ft-) thick exists between the Mary Lee and Blue Creek seams. Mining conditions vary from area to area. This mainly depends on the Blue Creek seam thickness that ranges from 0.9 to 2.9 m (3 to 9.5 ft). The thickness of the Mary Lee and the parting is relatively consistent with a to¬tal of 0.9 m (3 ft). HOT pressing of powder particles has gained importance recently, since it affords a method in which high densities are rapidly attained. In a recent study on hot pressing of alumina powders, Mangsen, Lam-bertson, and Best1 have shown within the limits of their experiment, the validity the rate equation for densification in hot pressing, originally proposed by Murray, Livey, and Williams.2 i.e., where D = fraction of theoretical density, t = time, P = pressure and 77 is the viscosity, all in appropriate units. This equation was derived from earlier work of Shuttleworth and Mackenzie3 which is based on the closing of spherical pores under the action of surface tension. The integrated form of this equation yields a straight-line relation between log (1 - D) and t. Such conditions were found by Felten4 to be true only after extended periods of pressing. Abstract Recent ore pass failures have underlined the need for improved designs, standards, structural mon¬itoring methods and better hang-up prevention and removal tech¬niques. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory of the Na¬tional Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are investigating methods to improve safety during the transport of ore in ore passes. Design criteria and hang-up prevention and remedia¬tion strategies involve studies of the effects of static and dynamic ore and waste-rock loads on chutes, walls, gates and support structures. Particle flow analysis methods were used to simulate the response of various ore pass designs to a wide range of ore loading condi¬tions. A full-scale mockup of ac¬tual ore pass and chute assemblies was duplicated and tested for load response. Data from a particle flow code and the mock-ups were com¬pared Loads on an active ore pass chute were measured.

In developed countries, the difference between demanded and produced quantities of non-ferrous and rare metals are compensated by secondary raw materials recycling and reprocessing of by-products from both ferrous and non-ferrous extractive metallurgy. Utilization of non-ferrous and rare metals from the metallic secondary raw materials is very significant, both for recovery of the metal value and contribution to the environment protection. Similar to all non-developed countries, the extractive metallurgy in Serbia was based on available natural resources and not so strict environment protection regulations, which was either insufficient or completely absent. Today, Serbia is at the beginning of development of efficient and economical technical and technological solutions in order to ?ecologize? technogenic systems by waste materials, secondary raw materials and degraded soils regeneration (by recycling and revitalization). Several metallurgical technogenic systems in Serbia, together with secondary raw materials classification according to their potentiality for metal extraction by using the existing technologies and expected economical and ecological effects of recycling, are discussed in this paper.

Industrial Minerals production in New Zealand is limited in both quantity and range, but imported in quantities that make New Zealand the world's biggest consumer per head of population. The use of industrial minerals is assured as both population and standard of living increase regularly. But to develop these minerals in the New Zealand environment requires the mineral, or its market (both local and export), to have characteristics that negate the remote geographical location. This paper presents the results of an extensive hydrological and geomechanical monitoring program which Gas conducted at a longwall coal mine in W. Va. The field program included monitoring of groundwater levels. overburden hydraulic conductivity, overburden movement, and surface subsidence relative to the passage of the longwall. Overburden geology and rock strength characteristics were evaluated prior to mining. A postmining corehole was drilled to evaluate main roof fracturing. An overburden response model is proposed based on the correlations between hydrological and geomechanical data.

The speed and internal accuracy of today's electronic calculators can be utilized to write an efficient slurry calculation program. The calculator's input/output printing feature offers additional benefits for data organizing and record keeping. This program allows slurry calculations to be performed without the urgency of immediately transferring a calculated result onto a process flowsheet or specification sheet. The number of flowsheets required for some hvdrometallurgical processes means the number of process stream blocks or ladder diagram entries can become substantial. Slurry calculations for such projects tend to become repetitious and tedious, and the chances for errors increase both in calculation and data entry onto process documents. Using this program has minimized both types of errors. Checking process flowsheets is particularly expedient with the program because you may "walk" through the flowsheet on a weight basis, i.e., solids rate and solids density, and have the program verify and/or correct the volume entries, gallons, and specific gravities. The program was initially used on a beneficiation project to check some 500 data entry values on ladder diagrams covering seven process flowsheets. Numerous hand calculation errors were determined and corrected, and the time for completely checking and correcting the flowsheet ladder diagrams was substantially reduced.

"A preliminary evaluation, based on existing data, has been made of the implications of placing radium-barium sludge in tailings areas. The study was restricted to a consideration of possible increases in the quantities of radionuclides escaping to the environment through either groundwater or surf ace water, considering the types of tailings treated and the effluent treatment systems currently operating in Canada.IntroductionIn the recovery of uranium from ore deposits, the tailings produced by mine/mill complexes are conveyed to impoundment areas in slurry form. After settling, the supernatant is discharged to the environment together with runoff from precipitation on the tailings bas in. Currently, all operating uranium mines in Canada employ barium chloride treatment to control the release of dissolved radium to the aquatic environment. The dissolved radium in the tailings decant is precipitated with barium chloride, forming (Ra,Ba)SO4, and allowed to settle in ponds or lakes. In some instances, settling tanks have replaced ponds and flocculants have been added to aid settling. Because the Atomic Energy Control Board does not consider the precipitation ponds to be suitable for final disposal of these sludges, acceptable sites must be found. Options which have been suggested for sludge management include underground placement either in worked-out mine areas or in special chambers, or placement in the tailings areas. Conceptually, the latter alternative is attractive and probably would minimize sludge handling. This alternative would be subject to the AECB policy which requires that upon abandonment, radioactive releases from a tailings area must be within present regulatory limits and that treatment to meet these limits should not be required in perpetuity.No quantitative data exist concerning either the effect of physical and chemical conditions in the tailings on resolubilization of radium from precipitated sludges or the fraction of this additional radium which would be released."

Abstract - Ore reserve estimation, based on sparse drill hole data, was conducted for a placer gold property in Nome, Alaska. A problem with sparse data is that random subdivision of the data into modelling and evaluation subsets (as is commonly done) becomes a problem, as random selection may result in biased/skewed subsets. Therefore, a technique that combined data segmentation with genetic algorithms (GA) was applied to divide the samples into three equivalent subsets: training, validation and testing. Data segmentation was done on the basis of the distribution of gold values. Neural network and a variety of kriging techniques were used to estimate gold grades. A multi-layer feed forward neural network along with "early/quick stop" training was used for neural network modelling. A comparative evaluation of kriging and neural network methods was then performed. The results revealed that neural network was generally superior to the kriging techniques for gold grade estimation in the Nome deposit.

The importance of metallurgical information in reaching appropriate decisions during the development of mining projects is demonstrated. A financial analysis is calculated using a simulation that includes random number generators. The results are compared to the results of a traditional sensitivity analysis. The traditional analysis is shown to have the potential to overestimate the value of mining projects. The type of statistical distribution selected for the random number generator affects the results significantly. The statistical method of analysis provides insight into the amount of metallurgical testing to be completed and verification of how representative the samples are.

Fluorspar was not mined in the United States during 2004, although a small amount of usable synthetic fluorspar (CaF2) was produced from industrial waste streams. The majority of fluorspar consumed in the United States came from imports or stockpiled material purchased from the National Defense Stockpile (NDS). In addition, consumption is supplemented by use of by-product fluorosilicic acid produced at phosphoric acid plants. In 2004, annual production of fluorosilicic acid was 50kt (55,000 st) or about 88 kt (97,000 st) of 92 percent fluorspar equivalent. Geochemical studies of the bauxite deposits show that the primary composition is gibbsitic. Some trace elements were relatively mobile during bauxite formation with the content of Th, U and Zr increasing and that of Rb, Ni and Co decreasing. Y and Pb were relatively immobile during lateritisation; their contents and ratios were inherited from different types of underlying rocks. The supply of Ni and Co took place at the diagenetic or epigenetic stages; their ultimate source was the crystalline basement in the region. The studies support the view that the bauxite was likely to have originated as a result of in-situ lateritisation and not through sedimentary transport and redeposition

The reduction of zinc from slags by a molten, carbon-saturated bath was examined in a laboratory study under conditions of continuous slag feeding. The results show that it is possible to reduce the bulk of the zinc from the slag before there is a net reduction of iron. However, the recovery of zinc was not as high as in batch tests performed in an earlier study. Lead in the slag was reduced simultaneously with the zinc to very low levels and was volatilised. Copper in the slag was reduced and dissolved in the alloy. An attempt was made to identify potentially commercial ways of treating zinc slags using an iron bath. The approaches that appear to have the greatest potential are reduction in a batch process using electrical heating and reduction in a continuous process with co- or countercurrent flow of the slag and alloy. In the latter the alloy would be prepared in a separate furnace before being contacted with the slag. The purpose of this would be to superheat and carburise the alloy so that no additional heat or reductant would have to be supplied in the slag-alloy reactor

With the change in legislation under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA), the responsibility for administering the effects of blasting on the environment, has transferred from an essentially central government system to local bodies. This naturally will allow for a variety of compliance levels and control procedures which will depend on the particular local body and rather ad hoc arrangements. It is anticipated that the existing NZ Standard on blast vibration levels will soon be replaced by the Australian Standard. These changes raise the question as to what should be used as suitable compliance levels to prevent damage to structures. The paper will address the measurement, control levels and the appropriateness of current standards in relation to the overall legal framework of the RMA.

In the absence of values for each influencing parameter and a known relationship of input-output space, novel approaches should be implemented as proxy solutions to mathematically complicated problems. Proxy solutions can be in the form of linear or non-linear multiple regression equations. Predicting the performance of gob gas ventholes is one of these mathematically complicated problems as it is difficult to know the exact relationships between various parameters influencing gob gas venthole (GGV) performance from active and sealed (completed) longwall panels. In this paper, a discussion of the NIOSH-developed software suite for methane control and prediction (MCP) based on an artificial neural network (ANN) is presented. The application of the ANN-based software suite to develop algebraic relationships for gob gas venthole performance prediction in sealed and active longwall panels is sought. Output information obtained from the NIOSH-MCP software as a response to various input parameters were used to create an input-output database for total flow and methane percentage from GGVs operating in active mines during completed and sealed panel situations. Due to the multi-variable nature of the software, outputs generated using the software for various inputs were used to develop analytical equations first using linear and then second using non-linear multivariable regression techniques. The advantage of this method is its ability to better understand the significant parameters of the relationships between the inputs and outputs for gob gas venthole production in active and sealed panels and to be able to predict their performances using relatively simple analytical functions.

This paper uses the results of research trials by Landcare Research and Forest Research Institute and assessments of reclamation plantings at mines and other drastically disturbed sites to describe methods of enhancing restoration of native forests. The characteristics of mine and forest environments are compared to highlight the difficulties facing restoration and techniques which result in successful restoration are described. Selection of the most appropriate technique is illustrated by describing restoration of lowland beech-podocarp forest at a West Coast coal mine. The key to successful reclamation is to understand the factors controlling and limiting plant establishment and growth, then to design rooting media, surfaces and management regimes to create a favourable environment. This paper concludes with a summary of the planning and technical factors which are critical for successful restoration of native forest.

This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977, that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.
