The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), is conducting research to test, evaluate, improve or modify coal mine fire-fighting strategies and methodologies through large-scale tests. Since wood is the second most abundant fuel available during a coal mine fire, it was decided that series of large-scale wood crib fire tests were needed to measure the products of combustion and to observe the capability of commonly available direct application fire suppression equipment, namely, fire extinguishers, water and gas-enhanced foam. This paper discusses the wood crib fire tests, provides insight into the products of combustion and describes observations made during the application of the fire suppression agents.

The Galore Creek Mine project is one of the newest major mining projects under development in Canada. The project is located in a very remote area of northwestern British Columbia and is being developed by NovaGold Resources and Teck-Cominco of Vancouver. The mine project comprises one of the largest and highest grade undeveloped porphyry-related gold-silver-copper deposits in North America. In order to access the mine site a new 120 km road is required including a 4.4 km mine access road tunnel. Glaciers with heavy snow pack cover approximately two-thirds of the tunnel alignment with a maximum cover of 1200 m. The size of the access road tunnel is about 50 m2 and has been designed as a large single lane road tunnel to accommodate the transport of large size mining equipment for mine start up and ongoing operations. The rock conditions along the tunnel alignment comprise very strong volcanic rocks. Key services for mining operations will be incorporated into the tunnel comprising diesel and power as well as the concentrate pipe-line. Structural portal canopies and portal houses have been incorporated into the tunnel design due to the risk of rockfalls and avalanches in the portal areas. The mine access road tunnel is a significant and critical-path component to the overall project to provide vehicular access to allow construction of the mine site. In order to meet the expected mine start up date the construction of the tunnel works have commenced prior to any other works at the mine site and will be constructed entirely by helicopter support. The tunnel works commenced in the summer of 2006 with the advanced excavation of the overburden materials at the portals. Tunnel construction from the North portal commenced in the spring of 2007. When completed, the mine access tunnel will be the longest private road tunnel in North America. The key design and constructability issues for the mine access road tunnel project are presented and discussed along with a construction status update as of late 2007.

Introduction In 1986, the US economy passed the $4 trillion mark. However, the value of domestically processed materials of mineral origin fell slightly to $240 billion. The value of metals produced from US ores was unchanged at $5.6 billion, as was recycled scrap at $4 billion, while the value of industrial minerals rose slightly to $17.9 billion. Consumer demand strongly affects mining and the US economy is relatively saturated with longlived products. Moreover, in recent years there has been a steady increase in consumer, mortgage, and federal debt, inhibiting new purchases of goods. Motor vehicles and housing are major traditional markets for mineral materials. However, the 242 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 92 million dwelling units. In 1986, domestic motor vehicle production fell 3%, to 11.3 million units, while new housing starts rose slightly to 1.8 million units. Nearly all mineral commodities move relatively freely in world trade. As detailed in Figs. 1 and 2, in the last three decades world production of major mineral materials has greatly increased. At present, substantial excess productive capacity exists not only in the US but also in many other countries. Consequently, the US mineral industry is encountering increasing competition from other sources, along with increasing competition from newer, engineered materials. For example, US production of plas¬tics has risen from 900 kt (1 million st) in 1950 to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1986 - on a volume basis significantly greater than steel. Plastics, too, are mineral-based materials, some 7% of petrochemicals going to their manufacture. 1986 saw increased calls for protection. But President Reagan, in his 1987 State of the Union Message and Economic Report to the Congress, reaffirmed adherence to a policy of free and fair trade. However, he stressed the need for increased efforts to open foreign markets to US exports and to increase competitiveness of US industry US imports of mineral-based minerals in 1986 were valued at $40 billion and exports at $24 billion. Strategic minerals As detailed in Fig. 3, imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important materials, including many classified as "strategic and critical." There were no changes in stockpile policy during the year. Congress debated the President's 1985 proposals to reduce stocks of World War II-type materials and to focus more on high technology materials needed for the cutting edge of future military material. But no final action resulted. However, Congressional concern about apartheid in South Africa did result in increasing pressure to limit imports of South African minerals. Meanwhile, the National Critical Materials Council in the Executive Office of the President intensified its efforts to be better able to advise the President. One of the main targets in the automotive mass industry and supplying industry is the weight reduction of the vehicle for decrease of the fuel consumption. For that reason combinations of different kinds of materials and connections of, for example, steel and aluminium are developed or are already successfully field-tested. A determining factor concerning the quality assessment of the welded joint during hybrid welding is the characterization of the intermetallic Fe-Al layer regarding strength, hardness, morphology and mainly the different phases in which Fe occurs together with the Aluminum (FeAl, Fe2Al5, FeAl3.). A combination of conventional light microscopy, SEM - EDX - analysis, the usage of an atomic force microscope including a Nanoindenter and theoretical thermodynamic calculations turned out to be highly effective. Based on the attained results, the constitution of the intermetallic FeAl layer, influenced by silicon, manganese and zinc, can be predicted.

This investigation compares the results from an experimental and numerical study of air flow in a scaled-down underground coal mine model. This was done in order to determine if numerical analysis can be relied upon when searching for ventilation solutions to control high concentration of coal dust and methane gas in underground coal mines. Steady state analyses were used to identify flow patterns and recirculation regions within the mining section while transient state analyses were used to determine the time taken to extract the initial air from the model. The agreement between the experimental and numerical results indicates that numerical modelling is useful in this regard. The study went further to devise a method of determining the optimum position of the jet fan that is responsible for mine-gas dilution at different stages of mining.

Critical decisions in iron ore project evaluation and production are based on global and local spatial estimates of primary mineral deposit properties (such as in situ geochemical grades) and geometallurgical responses (such as screened, washed or concentrated product yields and grades), which are derived from limited sample data. These spatial estimates are typically made using classical geostatistical techniques, which fundamentally assume that the attributes of interest behave additively. This assumption is generally appropriate for æprimaryÆ variables but æresponseÆ variables may behave non-additively and therefore their direct linear estimates may be biased.In this paper an existing additivity testing mechanism is used to quantify the bias resulting from direct linear estimation of a non-additive iron ore attribute. Data from a magnetite project are used to determine the circumstances under which such biases may be of material impact. The implications for iron ore resource estimation, geometallurgical modelling and grade control are outlined and discussed.CITATION:Cornah, A J, 2013. "Inco Metals Ltd. (Manitoba Division) operates a mining, milling, smelting and refining complex, 500 miles north of Winnipeg in central Manitoba. The Thompson Mill is presently operating at 12,000 S.T.P.D. on ore from both underground and open pit mines. The ore is treated in two separate milling and flotation circuits utilizing a common crushing system which is located inside the main mill building. The milling facility employs approximately 43 operating employees, 30 maintenance employees and 20 staff in supervisory or process development roles.In recent years an increasing awareness of the potential hazards of contaminants in the work place has made it mandatory that all employers maintain careful and accurate records of the work environment to which each employee has been exposed during his working career.The importance of this record keeping and general observation of the work place cannot be over emphasized. Proper monitoring of the work place provides an accurate and complete record of the contaminants and physical agents to which an employee is exposed during his work career. This can aid in studies which might be conducted in the future and can also be used as a basis for instituting improvements to the workplace."

It has long been known that ventilation is a cost-effective method to lower respirable dust concentrations in all types of mining applications. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has been working on a number of different research techniques that use ventilation as a critical component to lower respirable dust levels at surface and metal/nonmetal operations in the United States. This article presents five such research efforts. The first research area discusses how improving the ventilation flow patterns in an iron ore mill facility lowered respirable dust concentrations by 31 pct throughout the primary grinding area. The second research area examines how respirable dust levels were lowered at a dimensional stone shop by using air cleaning units suspended from the ceiling. A third area discusses how improvements in ventilation at underground limestone mines lowered respirable dust concentrations. The fourth area examines how improvements in dust filtration and pressurization systems significantly impacted the air quality in enclosed cabs of surface mining equipment. The last area presents a newly developed clothes cleaning technique. This technique uses an air spray manifold to blow dust from a worker?s clothing in an enclosed booth, which confines the dust for capture and removal by a baghouse dust collector. These research areas represent an array of different control technologies to lower respirable dust concentrations. Ventilation is an integral part of these control technologies.

Introduction The US Office of Surface Mining (OSM) is proposing changes to the Code of Federal Regulations in the interest of minimizing the adverse effects of excess-spoil-fill construction on the “prevailing hydrologic balance, fish, wildlife and other environmental values” (70 FR 35112). The proposed changes will require: (1) minimization the amount of excess spoil generated at a mine site; (2) minimization of the size of the fills constructed; (3) consideration of alternative configurations for disposal; and (4) development of a disposal plan that would minimize adverse impacts to the environment.1 To achieve those objectives, mining companies operating in steep-sloped Appalachia will likely build excess spoil fills (also called valley fills) that toe out at higher elevations in the hollows (i.e. to prevent or limit burial of streams). Consequently, the slopes of fill foundations will generally be steeper. Whereas the authors of this paper support these measures to protect the hydrologic balance and general environment, we wish to point out that placement of fills on steeper foundations can negatively impact the stability of the fills if proper care is not taken during their construction. It is important to note that in addition to impairing human safety, valley fill instability can negatively impact streams, the riparian habitat etc., and thus defeat the very purpose of the spoil minimization measures proposed. We do not, however, propose additional regulatory requirements pertaining to valley fill stability. Rather, we intend to emphasize the importance of engineering requirements already on the books, especially as they apply to the predominant type of valley fill constructed: the durable rock fill. We believe that the practice of restricting valley fills, to higher elevations in the watershed leaves less room for error in the design and construction of stable structures. This paper gives a quick review of the nature of excess spoil generation; methods and requirements of excess spoil fill construction, and the to-date stability record of the fills. The interest in excess spoil minimization and how it affects valley fill construction is also discussed. Most importantly, we will review long-standing issues pertaining to proper design and construction measures with respect to durable rock fills and discuss how they will become more critical as spoil minimization is practiced.

Introduction Mineral exploration interest, principally for gold, in the south-western Pacific has surged to new proportions. This is primarily due to the application of epithermal exploration concepts in the Australian-Oceana region. Other factors that have contributed to the high level of exploration interest include governmental policies supportive of mineral exploration, along with relative ease of tenure access and a relatively short bureaucratic process. This paper highlights exploration and development activities in the North Island of New Zealand, Fiji, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea (Fig. 1). It provides a framework to understand the overall recent enthusiasm that has been brought to the south Pacific by explorationists. Through these recent developments, it is clear that the south Pacific region will become a significant gold producing area and thereby worthy of attention and study. Papua New Guinea alone is the free world's seventh largest producer (Table 1). And, with the addition of production from deposits presently being developed, this status is likely to be raised. History Gold was first noted on various Pacific islands in the late 1500s by Spanish explorers. They thought they had reached the legendary King Solomon mines. Since then, the history of prospecting in the southwest Pacific has coincided with the colonization of the region. Settlers in New Zealand extensively mined alluvial and lode gold deposits starting in the 1850s. The spread of European colonization to the more remote Pacific islands from 1880-1940 was accompanied by varying degrees of prospecting activity by planters, traders, and settlers. Some were successful, others may have been successful, but never returned due to hostile indigenous peoples or disease. In general, records of such prospecting activity are meager and exploration leads are, in some cases, gained through local village folk memory. Most early discoveries were alluvial finds. These led to placer operations, particularly in New Zealand, the Solomon Islands, and Papua New Guinea. Continued prospecting located lode deposits such as the Morobe Gold-field of Papua New Guinea, the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand, and the Emperor of Fiji. Some areas were prospected thoroughly. Yet others, such as Vanuatu, remained relatively unexplored until the present exploration surge began. During World War II, interest in minerals was diverted. It was renewed significantly until the middle 1960s and early 1970s when regional porphyry copper exploration was conducted.

Often plant performance suffers as a result of poor control. Poor control leads to low mill throughputs, poor classification and less than satisfactory concentrate grades and overall recoveries. By using the appropriate control tools, substantial gains in plant performance can be made. Mintek?s MillStar and FloatStar controllers have been implemented at various sites across the world. The MillStar controller incorporates leading technology that controls process units from the mill feed through to the flotation feed. Typical results show that milling circuit throughput is increased by 6-10 % and the final product grind size is tightly controlled, thereby enhancing flotation performance. The FloatStar controller is aimed at stabilising and optimising flotation circuits. Through improved level control alone, recovery improvements of up to 1 % have been achieved. Furthermore, by using on-line grade analysers, the controller stabilises final concentrate grades, whilst maximising flotation recovery.

Brown coal production in Victoria's Latrobe Valley Region (Figure 1) continues to rise and currently stands at around 50 Mt per annum. With the exception of around 2 Mt used to produce some 700 Kt of brown coal briquettes, this coal is mined by the State Electricity Commission to fuel large thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of just over 5 000 Megawatts. The moisture content of the coal as mined typically exceeds 60 per cent, making Latrobe Valley coal a markedly low rank fuel. The lack of heating value is, however, compensated for through power station design and by the fact that ash yield is very low, usually within the range of one per cent to four per cent on a dry basis. This means that compared with most other coals, the burning of Latrobe Valley brown coal produces relatively small quantities of waste products and discharges a minimal level of pollutants into the atmosphere. Even so, the inherent quality of Latrobe Valley coal does vary significantly from one area to another (Gloe, 1991; Barton et al, 1992) both on a local and a regional scale. Such variations need to be recognised and understood in order to not only realise efficiency gains in existing power stations but to properly assess resource potential for future utilisation and the application of new technologies. The principal aim of this paper is not to describe coal quality variation in detail or to speculate on the nature of and reasons for such variation. Rather, it is to simply underscore that significant differences do occur and that this is clearly a factor which needs to be considered in any evaluation of Latrobe Valley brown coal as a resource for the future.

The Hemlo Gold District, located on the north shore of Lake Superior, was discovered in 1981 and will become one of the largest gold mining camps in Canada. Three major Canadian mining companies are presently developing large orebodies and are scheduled to commence production at various times through 1985 and 1986. This paper describes the types of shaft sinking equipment and technology being used by contractors in constructing the required shafts to depths below 1000 metres. The principal shaft design criteria, types of shaft sinking machinery and relevant manpower allocations are discussed.

Slurry pipelines are used in a number of countries to convey processed ore mixed with water over long distances from remote mine sites to ports or plants for further processing. In Egypt and Sudan, numerous mineral resources are scattered in remote areas. Through the years, Egyptian geologists have identified 268 sites for metallic ores and 386 sites for industrial nonmetallic minerals. A large portion of these sites are in the Eastern Desert in an area called the Nubian Shield. Similar sites are found in the Sudan where mining contributes to less than 1 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). There are three important components of infrastructure needed to develop these resources ? power, water and transportation. While Egypt is able to satisfy 70 percent of its needs in iron ore from the Gadideh Mine in the Western Desert, it needs to expand its other resources to reduce imports heavily sedimented. Dredging of these sediments and transporting them by slurry pipelines would enhance an industry of bricks or agricultural development based on tailings technology often used in mining. This article explores the potential for slurry technology for opening new mines in the desert or recuperating the sediments of the Nile. The technology by itself would be new to both countries and would benefit from collaboration, particularly to de-silt the Nasser-Nubia Lake.

A new family of sulfide flotation collectors has been developed in our laboratory. These formulations are comprised of novel renewable materials combined with conventional reagents. The resulting diversity permits tunability of collector chemistry to meet a range of flotation problems. Several attributes of the new collectors are presented.

THE following notes, compiled in the first instance for the makers of rock-drIlls, were read by Mr. Hanton at a meeting of the Broken Hill Branch on 12th Septelnber, 1922. It was decided that all Broken Hill mines be asked to give their individual views on the subject, so that a comprehensive Broken Hill view could be published. Replies have been received from four (4), mines to date, and their'ideas fairly well coincide with those set out by Mr. Hapton. His notes were as follow:- "The Zinc Corporation Limited.NOTES ON ROCK-DRILL DEVELOPMENTSAs far as our present experience goes, the rock-drill developments on this mine will probably be something resembling the following. The programme is subject to modification or alteratian, according to circumstances. The results of further trials and improvements in present drills, and the design of new types, will, of course, affect any general scheme such as that outlined. It appears reasonably certain that the 3i-in. reciprocating drills which have done practically all the stoping up to date, will be gradually replaced by hammer drills of the internal water-feed type, and that the existing types of hammer drill on the mine will be converted into internal water-feed machines instead of being used as dry machine with outside jet.The ultimate types of machines will be four... Type 1 would be a machine equivalent to the Ingersoll Leyner: 248, Waugh Turbro, SullivaIi DX61, or Holman CH2. This would be used for driving, cross-cutting, and similar excavating work, and possiblyfor stoping also, and should be capable of efficiently working any class of ground. Features, apart from the general requirements set out later, would be the weight of the machine and mounting height of the machine above the seating (as this affects the convenience of boring back or bottom holes); absence of projections on the mounting which the air hose will foul as the machine is fed...

In the latter half of 1973 a contract was given to Roberts-Holland Joint Venture for the stripping of the southern exhaust airway.The contract was carried out efficiently and relatively cheaply. It was completed 2 months ahead of schedule.The sinking stage and in particular the drilling jumbo proved to be a success and helped produce an above schedule stripping rate.No major problems were encountered with ground conditions or ventilation. A survey of the shaft showed the diameter to be within the set limits of 5·49 m ± 0·15 m.

In 1998, the Concentrator Modeling Center was established within the Coleraine Minerals Research Lab to develop models for simulation of iron ore processing plants, and to assist plant operators in improving performance of their aging plants. The short-term objective was to develop necessary models for reliable simulation using conventional techniques, while the long-term objective was set as liberation-based modeling and simulation of these plants. The short-term objective was achieved in 2002, after the development of models for magnetic separators, hydroseparators and fine screens. A project funded the US Department of Energy was carried out to demonstrate the capability in improving iron ore processing at the Mittal plant. As a result of this study, a 10% improvement in throughput at the plant was obtained, and simulation became a desired tool for plant operators. A significant step in the long-term objective was reached in 2005 with the development of a liberation model. This was followed by incorporation of models capable of processing liberation data into the software. By early 2007, the Center had the capability of performing liberation-based simulation of entire plants.
