"Preg-robbing has been known for many years, where increased losses are suffered because dissolved gold is removed from solution by adsorption onto carbonaceous matter. In direct cyanidation circuits it is reasonable to conclude that the preg-robbed gold is either in a gold cyanide [Au(CN) - 2, AuCN] or metallic [Au°] form. However, in circuits with a pre-oxidation step possibilities increase and multiply even further because of water recycle streams containing apparent and not-so-apparent gold ligands. It is in these circuits where speciation of sorbed gold, i.e. the identification of the gold compound, is useful. The importance arises from the fact that proper identification of the sorbed gold species can be used to determine how, when, where and why gold was removed from solution, thereby identifying the exact cause of the problem and providing clues as to how it may be rectified.INTRODUCTIONTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt ever to speciate gold preg-robbed by carbonaceous matter using a surface sensitive microbeam technique. This approach enables the direct determination of gold species sorbed on carbonaceous particulates, opening an entirely new field in the understanding of the chemistry of gold sorption on carbon. The reasoning behind this effort was to add to the current knowledge of the detrimental effect chloride ions have on gold recovery by the pressure oxidation and in particular why in the ensuing CIL step, gold is not being desorbed from the surface of the carbonaceous particles (Table 1)."

Since Sept. 11, 2001, the author has been asked by several mining companies and mining publications to share some of his insights on how the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and Pentagon might affect the mining industry globally. Until now, the author has been reluctant to express his thoughts in a publication that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists and give them some ideas that they may not have been previously considering. However, the author discussed the contents of this article with several friends and acquaintances in the international intelligence community. They said that nothing commented on here is new to the terrorists. Potential terrorist targets Sources within the worldwide intelligence gathering community have told the author that current intelligence data indicates that it is likely that the Islamic fundamentalist groups responsible for the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001will likely be directing their effort at foreign business entities. Any overseas or any domestic businesses of highly visible companies that are part of the anti-terrorism alliance should consider themselves a potential target.

"Abstract - A heavy mineral survey of beach and dune sands including geochemical analysis for trace elements was undertaken to evaluate the economic potential of the sands and to understand the nature and distribution of the heavy minerals relative to potential source rocks. Results indicate that heavy minerals are generally derived from outcropping volcanic rocks that comprise a proportion of the hinterland in the south part of our survey area. The most abundant minerals are magnetite and pyroxene. The morphologies of the heavy mineral grains are angular to subangular, suggesting that they were transported short distances from the source rocks. Factors controlling heavy mineral distributions include wave and wind action, proximity to provenance, the fluvial drainage network, and longshore currrents.The most economically important mineral is ilmenite. Zircon and rutile concentrations are relatively minor and thus have lower economic potential."

The Corridor Sands deposits of heavy mineral sands represent the largest known economic resource of titanium dioxide minerals. The West Block of Deposit 1 alone contains Measured and Indicated Mineral Resources of 1.7 billion tonnes containing 4.14 per cent ilmenite, estimated in accordance with the JORC standard, sufficient for at least the first 20 years of mining. Total mineral resources are estimated to be approximately 17 billion tonnes at 5 per cent Total Heavy Minerals (THM). Test work was undertaken on the West Block of Deposit 1 over a period of two years in order to develop the process flow sheet to bankable standards. Geological, mineralogical and metallurgical test work was integrated from a pre-feasibility stage to the full bankable stage. The process flowsheet was developed with the central objective of the production of saleable products, of consistent quality and acceptable to the respective end-markets. The aim of this paper is to describe the way in which the various challenges for the project have been addressed by using integrated geological and mineralogical information, which has resulted in the development of a complete flow sheet. The process confirmed that material within customer specifications could be produced, once various metallurgical parameters were understood. This flow sheet development progressed from laboratory test work through to full field trials at pilot plant scale on large consignments of mineralized material. The flow sheet was developed to such a standard as to be used with confidence for both engineering design and cost estimates, and to determine the recovery factors to be used in financial evaluations. All large-scale applications of conditional simulations intend to benefit from the ‘correct’ (or’ accurate’) characterization of uncertainty, adequately describing the variability observed from the data and its impact on the final objective. This paper discusses a number of relevant issues that highlight the extent to which, in reality, a model of uncertainty is dependent on the random function model chosen. Often in the presence of large number of conditioning data most available random function models will provide similar models of uncertainty. When conditioning is scarce, the resulting models of uncertainty will vary more widely, since the final output will depend mostly on the underlying assumptions of the model chosen. The application described in this paper is taken from a large porphyry Cu operation in northern Chile, and it demonstrates the impact of several variables on the resulting models of uncertainty. In particular, some of the decisions involved include the number of conditioning data and the underlying Random Function model used (Gaussian or indicator-based). Also, implementation-specific parameters must be decided upon, such as grid size used, random number generator, simple or ordinary kriging, multiple-grid simulation, and simulation of irregular three-dimensional bodies (as opposed to regular grids). Some practical guidelines are proposed to deal with these decisions.

Coal production in the United States reached a record level in 2005, ending the year at 1.03 Gt (1,133.3 million st) according to preliminary data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (Table 1). Production in 2005 was 19.2 Mt (21.2 million st) higher than the 2004 level of 1 Gt (1,112.1 million st) and surpassed the prior record set in 2001 by 5.1 Mt (5.6 million st). Although total U.S. coal consumption rose in 2005, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sector by 2.2 percent and declined in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption decreased slightly.

"SUMMARYWaste management in general, and the water treatment of mine and mill effluents, has become an ever increasing burden for mining operations. A reduction in these expenditures would undoubtedly be desirable if this could in fact be achieved within effluent guidelines and monitoring requirements.A brief summary is presented of the research which has as its aim the development of methods which would reduce such costs and lead to solutions for environmentally acceptable close-out conditions for acid generating mine waters. The basic concepts of Ecological Engineering and Biological Polishing are presented, together with an indication of the present state of these research efforts. Details are provided of the progress of various experiments which aim to promote reducing conditions, organic matter production and the establishment of biological filters which remove metals from the water which are then retained within the waste management areas. These conditions should lead to a curtailment of acid drainage and an improvement in effluent quality.A description is provided of the first pilot demonstration using this approach to achieve a walk-away condition for the close-out of a massive sulphide tailings resulting from 10 years of operating a copper/zinc concentrator in Northern Ontario.1.0 INTRODUCTION1.1 Waste management and close-outIt is recognized that the achievement of a cost-effective and competitive mining operation, from the commencement of exploration for ore bodies through to the day-to-day efficient operation of the mine, requires a certain expertise and sophistication. "An autogenous grinding circuit was commissioned at the Brunswick concentrator in October 1998. The autogenous grinding circuit replaced existing surface crushing plants, fine ore storage, rod and primary ball mills. The 8.54m diameter x 4.27m long (EGL) AN1 mill is driven by a bidirectional variable speed 6.3MW ABB wound rotor motor with Slip Energy Recovery (SER) drive. The AG mill was subsequently converted to SAG operation in May 1999 for a number of reasons. The mill is operated in closed circuit with horizontally inclined 660mm diameter cyclones to produce a circuit product P80 of 85 microns. Extensive test work and JKSimMet design modeling resulted in a production circuit operating closely within design expectations.The circuit is highly instrumented and controlled via a hybrid Programmable Logic Controller (PLC-5) and Fisher PROVOX Distributed Control System (DCS) that is in communication with the property information highway. An expert control system (Gensym G2) is used for control of the SAG mill load.Engineering and construction were completed in 28 months from the time of management approval for the project. The Brunswick AG/SAG mill circuit was commissioned on schedule at the $M 23.5 forecast budget."

The Earth Pressure Balanced (EPB) shields designed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., are recently more enthusiastically accepted by tunnel boring specialists. This company having built 1,000 tunnel shields utilizes its vast experience to resolve the problem to excavate through big boulders scattered in rather soft alluvial soil. Several types of EPB shields which can cope with large size boulders are described. Such shields are equipped with both drag bits and rolling disc cutters on the cutterheads. Previously removal of boulders has presented safety problems for workers while in the muck chamber, or venturing in front of the shield. This report describes the problem and how the equipment was modified to deal with the problem.

The Tabriz-Urmiyeh Highway shortens the distance of north-western cities of Iran by about 130 km, resulting in improved access and efficient transit between Iran and Europe through Turkey. The highway crosses the Urmiyeh Lake, an inland lake surrounded by mountains. Due to the circulation of salt-water in the lake and the necessity to continue shipping between adjacent ports, a waterway should be kept open. Consequently, a bridge was built to provide access of marine traffic. A causeway bridge had a length of 1,260 m, comprising of 19 spans. In construction of the bridge, more than 400 piles having a total length of 32 km have been driven. For design of piles different methods have been used such as static analysis, dynamic testing, and correlations to in situ tests, such as cone penetration test (CPT). This paper presents construction of bridge substructure, full-scale piling tests, and methods of analysis used in the evaluation of the deep foundation capacity. The presentation includes an assessment of four current direct CPT and one CPTu methods to calculate the bearing capacity of the piles. It was found that the CPTu and dynamic testing are two suitable tools for rapid and optimum pile design and verification.

Safety is the most important aspect of haul road design. Although other aspects of road installation enter decisions on design, the safety of persons using the road has to be foremost for the duration of haul road usage. Other aspects of mad design focus on minimizing truck cycle time and fitting haul roads to the long-term configuration of the mine/quarry or construction project. Roads are often installed at high gradients for a short-term goal, but the long-term benefits are easily shown with lower gradient haul roads which provide better cycle times and lower operating costs.

"The roasting and gas handling circuits of the Barrick Gold’s new Roasting Facility at the Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, USA incorporate well proven technologies in a unique combination. During the design of the plant, every effort was made to utilize the best available technologies from the perspective of capital, environment and operating costs.Product from the up-stream dry grinding circuit requires roasting to maximize gold recovery. The roaster utilizes Freeport-McMoRan whole ore roasting technology with pure oxygen as the oxidizing gas. This process was chosen based on its proven application on Carlin-type “double refractory” ores. Double refractory is indicative of the gold being difficult to direct leach due to a combination of pyrite encapsulation and the carbonaceous preg-robbing of the ore.A very extensive gas cleaning train follows the roaster and comprises direct cooling, dust scrubbing, indirect cooling, wet electrostatic precipitation, mercury scrubbing, SO2 scrubbing, CO incineration and NO, reduction before venting to the atmosphere.The roasted calcine is quenched, neutralized and then thickened before leaching in the carbon-in-leach-circuit.INTRODUCTIONBarrick’s strategic development plan integrated the production of gold from Goldstrike’s carbonaceous ore reserves by 2000. A due diligence review of carbonaceous ore processing options was initiated during the second half of 1 996. Processes considered included autoclaving followed by a proprietary ammonium thiosulfate leaching process, fine grinding/autoclaving as practiced then by Santa Fe, and whole ore roasting as practiced by then Independence Mining and Newmont. The objective by year-end was to recommend the most robust and economical process for Goldstrike’s carbonaceous resources. In the fall of 1996, a detailed review of roasting as a processing alternative for Goldstrike was initiated."

Reports of delays and cost blowouts in major study and construction projects are becoming increasingly prevalent in the resources industry. This is mainly being attributed to an escalating cost environment associated with the increased number of projects in the development to construction pipeline and a scarcity of competent skilled resources to deliver these projects. However, not all this effect can be directly attributed to the current environment. Historically the mining industry has not performed well in its ability to deliver projects according to the financial and physical parameters forecast in the feasibility study process. To manage the risks associated with delivery of major projects, resource companies need to ensure they use a standardised approach to management of their project development to satisfy project objectives and enable more efficient use of the increasingly limited available resources. Each discrete step in advancing the project from scoping study to operations needs to be integrated, reducing the amount of rework and duplication. This paper is primarily a consolidation of existing ideas on project management systems but also introduces new concepts to solve current issues. It describes the basic components of a typical mining project, the issues that commonly arise, the key attributes, and critical steps required for an effective integrated project management system covering projects from initial scoping studies through to project commissioning and operation. This paper focuses on technical study components of the mine development project with allowance for transitioning to design and construction and operation phases.

Holla has given a good background to the various methods of subsidence control in the coalfields around Sydney.The present writer notes that in many cases, especially with wide longwall panels, there is not the flexibility to alter the mine layout as there is to some degree with the various pillar extraction methods. For this reason it may not be possible to plan the workings to minimise subsidence and some damage to structures may occur. The cost of repair or the cost of subsidence provisions to minimise damage may be small in relation to the tonnages of coal which would otherwise have to be sterilised. One method of subsidence control which has been in use in the Newcastle area since 1970 is the panel and pillar layout (partial extraction layouts with stable pillars). An extracted panel width of 0.6 times the depth of cover resulted in a maximum subsidence of 115 mm for an extracted seam thickness of 2.2 m.As Holla points out, the extracted panel widths in relation to th depth of cover depend on the particular geological setting. His Fig. 3 shows that the subsidence over a panel width of 0.3 times the cover depth in the Southern Coalfield is the same as over a panel width of 0.55 to 0.6 times the cover depth in the Northern Coalfield.Selective pillar extraction and longwall mining can both be used in the panel and pillar layout. Holla's Figs 2 and 3 are used to estimate the maximum subsidence over an extracted panel of known geometry. Maximum subsidence is related to seam thickness. What provision is made for a reduction in subsidence due to the coal which remains behind in a pillar extraction panel if the pillar recovery is poor? The writer suggests that an effective seam height could be used, based on the actual mining height reduced by a factor to account for the percentage recovery of coal from an extracted panel.

It is important to know the breakage mechanism in materials since this knowledge influences the results of subsequent grinding operations. There are two distinct failure mechanisms in breakage: one is tensile micro crack generation at low stresses, which leads to macroscopic failure by disintegration, and the other is formation of shear zones under heavier dynamic impact forces, which generates more fines as seen in crush zones in blasting. Tensile fracturing simply breaks the material into fragments. It is seen as the disintegration of the specimen into two or more separate fragments. This happens under the absence of lateral stresses and the material is free to expand. On the other hand, compressive-shear breakage produces finer fragments due to shear stresses. The first mechanism is observed in laboratory tensile and bending strength tests and the second mechanism is observed both in laboratory brittleness tests and in situ blasting operations under dynamic impact forces. The friability of rocks and ores can be determined by a brittleness test. A test apparatus to determine the friability value has been designed to suit limestone strength characteristics used in cement production. The friability and stored strain energy values of barite, marble, limestone and bauxite have been determined and compared with the corresponding Bond work index (Wi) and grindability index (G) of these materials. The physico-mechanical properties of the tested materials have also been determined to investigate their effect on friability and grinding. The relationships obtained between the indices were in surprisingly good agreement, with high correlations (0.99 and 0.97). The Bond work index and grindability index can therefore be estimated from the friability value, which can be determined more rapidly than the Bond test. But for certain rock types such as andesites the relationships does not hold. Key words: comminution, tensile stress, shear forces, brittleness test, strain energy.

STABILIZATION of the adjustment of normal consumption to normal production of world commodities is quite different from reducing production until visible surpluses are consumed. The first means restoration and maintenance of prosperity, the second means merely a temporary alleviation of a condition with the prime cause remaining uncorrected. Overproduction of foodstuffs in some sections of the world while millions starve in other sections represents not so much overproduction of foodstuffs as mal-distribution of foodstuffs. The flour mills of Washington and Oregon normally ship quantities of flour to China. Now, the wheat that would make this flour goes East instead of West. Is this overproduction, or is there something wrong that calls for study, analysis and correction? Can the plan used by the ostrich of hiding its head in. the sand get us by this present world tragedy, or must the challenge to solve this problem be met, constructively? Can we not make out of this breakdown in the world's economic system an opportunity? And use it as the stimulus for remedying the basic cause of the trouble and not content ourselves with devising temporary expedients that aim at remedying this or that of the obvious conditions, in themselves not causes at all but rather the evidence of causes, or that are the symptoms of the real trouble.

Mines and plants for sale, downsizing, bankruptcies, consolidation, slab imports, minimill growth displacing traditional integrated steel-making. These are some issues for North American iron ore and integrated steel producers. But the blast furnace still remains the workhorse of the ironmaking industry. And direct reduction and other alternate ironmaking technologies have yet to make any serious inroads in North America. How come? This article addresses the current state of primary ironmaking in the changing North American steel industry, the direct reduction market and new technologies under development that may hold some promise.

Identification and quantification of cementitious phases in cemented paste backfill (CPB) is difficult due to the fineness of tailings and the low binder content used in the mixture. Techniques such as X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry were ineffective (mainly due to tailing mineral interference) to identify and quantify hydration products in most works reported in the literature. On the other hand, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used in many cases but mainly for qualitative purposes. This paper presents the development of a new approach based on a computer program (SEM-XMAP) that combines X-ray dot mapping images acquired by SEM and generates a coloured image representing the mineralogy and the microstructure of a given CPB specimen. The technique is applied to one CPB sample mixed with blast furnace slag (BFS) and acidic sulphated mixing water sampled in a mine dewatering system. The technique allowed identifying calcic matrix, unhydrated and partially hydrated BFS particles, and sulphated phases.
