INTRODUCTION The Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) Tunnel Scheme is part of the Alimineti Madhava Reddy Project in Andhra Pradesh, South India. This scheme has been planned since 1983 and will provide irrigation facilities to drought-ridden areas in Andhra Pradesh. Water will be transferred from the Srisailam Reservoir during the monsoon months to 0.3 million acres of farmland and will also provide drinking water to villages en-route. The paper will address the design and onsite assembly of the Robbins Double Shield TBMs for Tunnel-1 of the SLBC tunnel scheme from planning to start-up of the machines. Also, it will provide a current status of the project and describe the advantages of a site assembly. Problems encountered to date and the solutions adopted will also be described. The project comprises over 50 km of tunnels and involves construction of the world?s longest tunnel without intermediate access. The TBM tunnels at 43.9 km in length and 10.0 m diameter will cross the Amrabad plateau, containing a wild life sanctuary and India?s largest tiger reserve, the Rajiv Gandhi. Jaiprakash elected to excavate the tunnel using two tunnel boring machines, rather than by drill and blast, in order to alleviate surface disturbances to environment and the tiger reserve, wild life sanctuary, and protected forestry areas. The Project was awarded to the Main Contractor Jaiprakash Associates Ltd with The Robbins Company as the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) supplier in August 2005. The Robbins Company supplied the TBMs along with two continuous conveyor systems and all spares and consumables to complete the tunnel excavation.

Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

This paper will review several projects completed during the period from 1976 through 1984 which have been carried out utilizing big hole drilling concepts. The projects discussed will be from various industries to demonstrate the extent that big hole drilling methods are being used along with the current state of development. There will be a discussion of projects planned for the future where big hole drilling methods are the only technology being considered. Also included in the discussions will be an overview of the most recently completed heavy oil recovery project. During the next decade, big hole drilling methods will be used more and more in all industries where underground access is required. The safety, speed and economics associated with shaft sinking using drilling methods are becoming more and more recognized and the technology is rapidly becoming an accepted shaft sinking method.

Scattered north and south along a 161-km (100-mile) stretch of Interstate 80, Newmont Min¬ing Corp. owns four active mining properties in Nevada?s northern high desert ? Carlin Trend Operations, Midas, Twin Creeks and Phoenix. Among the four, there are nine openpits, five underground mines and 14 processing facilities. While gold is the predominant ore, silver and copper are also produced. And in a move to hold down energy costs, Newmont built and owns the 200-MW (net), coal-fired TS power plant. This plant provides about 65 percent of the power used for Newmont?s own operations, while the rest is sold to NV Energy, which services Nevada and northeastern California. Bringing the Phoenix Mine ? Newmont?s newest in Nevada ? on-line presented many developmental and operational challenges. Located about 19 km (12 miles) southwest of the town of Battle Mountain, the general area had been home to prospectors and other mining companies since the 1860s. But any profitability in developing the lower grade gold, copper and silver deposit at Phoenix proved elusive, with Battle Mountain Gold being the last company to make an attempt. When Newmont acquired Battle Mountain Gold and its Phoenix reserves in 2001, the lower grade of ore was not a deterrent. Newmont found Nevada-wide cost savings synergies for maximizing profit during the depressed gold market of the late 1990s. The new property was aptly renamed the Phoenix Mine, a nod to its rising from the ashes of the dreams and efforts of previous mine owners.

Interest in the western oil shales of the US began in about 1908, with the first retort in Colorado constructed in 1917. The most successful early developments were near Elko, NV, where the Catlin Shale Products Co. produced more than 1.9 dam3 (12 000 bbl) of shale oil during 1920-1924 and at Rulison, CO, where a US government operation produced about 570 in 3 (3 600 bbl) of shale oil during 1926-1929. Plentiful low-cost crude oil was developed about this time and shale oil was of little or no interest until after World War II. From 1944 to about 1972, several companies, and the US government, operated shale oil mines and recovery plants in Colorado. While technical successes were achieved and an estimated 40-56 clam' (250 000-350 000 bbl) of shale oil were produced, economics were not favorable and commercial production was not achieved. In recent years domestic production of crude oil supplies has not kept pace with US consumption. The growing shortfall has been met with imports. The cost of imported oil has continued to escalate and increased US dependence on petroleum imports are national concerns, because of the negative impact on US balance of payments and an increasing dependence on other nations for US energy needs. In 1978, petroleum imports equaled about 44% of demand, up from 23% in 1970, but down from 48% in 1977 because of availability of Alaskan North Slope crude oil. Reduced domestic consumption and other factors have reduced current imports to about 40-45% of de¬wand-but at ever increasing cost. The growing shortage of crude petroleum and its increasing cost have resulted in renewed worldwide interest in oil shales. In the past, the main obstacle to oil shale development (progress toward commercial production) has been economics-shale oil cost too much to develop and thus could not compete with conventional petroleum crudes. Even with today's inflated energy prices, some experts say the production of synthetic crude oil from oil shale is, at best, marginally economic. Multidisciplinary investigations were completed to prove the availability of water resources for the proposed San Cristóbal silver-lead-zinc mine in the arid Altiplano of Bolivia. Surface water resources are scarce, of poor quality, and unsuitable for development. Therefore, hydrogeological reconnaissance targeted alluvial aquifers for development. Follow-up resistivity, refraction, and water quality assessments were used to prioritize areas with prolific production potential. Pumping tests and regional water balance analysis indicate an alluvial aquifer can sustain the required approximately 40 000 m3 per day production for the life of the mine and predict no significant negative environmental effects on local groundwater users and the environment.

The present U.S. production of bromine is from inland brines located in Arkansas and Michigan. The most concentrated domestic brines (up to 5,000 ppm bromide)are situated in Arkansas. Less concentrated brines(about 2,500 ppm bromide) are located in Michigan. The amount of bromine sold or used in the United States came from three companies operating in those two states. Its value was $191 million. In 2004, the estimated U.S. bromine production was 222 kt (244,000 st). That compared with 216 kt (238,000st) produced in 2003.

In mid-1991, the design/build contractor set to work on the Pergau HEP in a remote corner of Malaysia, armed with only a slim volume of conceptual drawings. The next five years saw roads, power lines, buildings, dams, and over 30 kilometers of tunnel constructed, followed by two years of E&M installation and commissioning. Along the way, the project overcame geothermal groundwater, faults, land disputes, monsoon rains, marauding tigers, and those most fearsome of foes, politicians and the press. This paper is a testament to the ingenuity, commitment, and persistence of the construction industry professionals who brought this massive project to fruition.

The surface chemistry of the calcite/oleate flotation system was examined by in-situ FT-NIR/IRS. Spectra of combination and overtone bands of aliphatic stretching vibrations revealed gauche/trans conformational changes that occurred solely as a function of temperature. The conformational changes were attributed to the simple "melting" behavior associated with phase transitions. It was concluded that chemisorbed oleate at calcite surfaces is gel-like at temperatures below 22oC, resembles a coagel between 22oC and 31oC, and becomes micelle-like at temperatures above 31oC. By comparison, chemisorbed oleate at fluorite surfaces also undergoes these phase transitions but is additionally dependent on adsorption density. The conformational changes were observed at high chemisorption densities (> 2.0x10-10 mol/cm2) and attributed to molecular forces, primarily van der Waal's interactive forces, among neighboring chemisorbed oleate molecules. Similar analysis of in-situ FT-NIR/IRS spectra of surface-precipitated calcium dioleate at calcite surfaces did not exhibit this behavior thereby confirming that surface-precipitated calcium dioleate remains in an all-trans conformation. The results help explain why surface polymerization is not observed at calcite surfaces but is observed at fluorite surfaces.

De Beers? Finsch diamond mine began operation in the 1960s as a surface project using the latest technology available. During the 1990s, the operation, located about 160 km (100 miles) west of Kimberley, South Africa, began its move as an underground mine. The earlier stages (Blocks 1, 2 and 3) of underground work at Finsch used open stope mining methods, also using the latest in technology. The mine began developing Block 4 in 2004. How-ever, studies on this level showed that block caving was a more efficient mining method than open stoping. It was during those studies that De Beers determined that Block 4 would be a good candidate for testing Sandvik?s automated truck haulage technology.

Syncrude Canada produces a large part of Canada’s crude oil supply. The company processes about 225,000 bbl/day. The oil produced is used for jet and automobile fuel, home heating oil, plastics and other consumer synthetics. Crude oil is produced through a process of mining, extracting and upgrading bitumen. A rich supply of bitumen is contained in the Athabasca oil sands deposit in northern Alberta. Tailings from the bitumen processing are sent to a settling basin.

From the massive equipment that moves the earth, to the parts that keep the equipment moving, it was all on display for more than 35,000 people who at-tended MinExpo 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 22-24. In the largest show in the illustrious history of MinExpo, the success of the recent commodity boom was reflected in the more than 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of floor space that was jam-packed with nearly 1,300 vendors. Among them, the makers of the industry?s largest machines, displaying their latest and greatest trucks, shovels, excavators, drills and other mining equipment. During the nearly decade-long commodities boom, equipment makers have worked hard to keep up with demand while also investing heavily in research and development. The beneficiaries of this R&D is the end user who saw first-hand at MinExpo 2008 the many advances that have already been made in safety, comfort and productivity from all the manufacturers. R&D has also helped spark more talk of automation, which is being used already at some of the world?s largest mines. Caterpillar and Komatsu have worked with the technology in surface mining and Bucyrus and Sandvik are among the industry leaders applying the science of automation to underground mines. Technology has in-creased greatly since the idea of moving massive equipment remotely was first knocked around and the idea of entire fleets operating around the clock seems to be getting closer to reality. But, until that happens, MinExpo attendees were treated to a show that featured some of the most impressive current machines the industry has to offer. In the largest booth space of the convention, Caterpillar (www.cat.com) displayed the culmination of an ambitious $280-million dollar investment, with the introduction of its new mining fleet of four new trucks. The F-series was un-veiled with common features in safety, cabs, engines, frames and bodies and Tier 2 compliant engines. The F series also features a return to the electric drive option. ?When our customers asked us for improvements to our mining trucks, we responded by making a record investment in every single truck in our line, as well as the increased capacity to produce more of them,? said Cater-pillar group president Stu Levenick. ?New technologies have allowed us to make trucks more reliable, easier to maintain and more friendly to the operator and to the environment.? The 793-series is in the 218- to 227-t (240- to 250-st) class that will be available in both mechanical (793F) and electric (793F ac) versions. The electric drive-only 313- t (345-st) 795F was also introduced, while the flagship 797B truck is in the process of being replaced by the new 797F mechanical drive, maintaining its 345- to 363-t (380- to 400-st) target payload. Completing Caterpillar?s new mining truck line will be new versions of the 785 and 789 mechanical drive trucks. The next generation of trucks will be phased into production during the next two years, with the Cat ac drive models expected to go into production in late 2010. In the drive for faster development advance rates, railbound systems can be advantageous, in the right application. Skanska BS, the contractor to mine-owner VSK Mining, is driving an adit access deep into the Volouské Urchy Mountain in Slovakia to access the Gemerská Poloma talc deposit, some 70 km (43 miles) west of Ko?ice, the economic and cultural center of eastern Slovakia. Skanska began driving the Stolna Elisabeth drift in February 2007, extending 25 kg/m (50 lb/yd) rails (with 750 mm or 30 in. between sleepers) into the mountain to provide the main haulage to bring talc ore and waste out of the new mine once it gets into production. It will also be used for personnel transport, and is now almost complete. As a second egress and for ventilation, a 2.5-m- (8.2-ft-) diameter shaft of about 300-m (984-ft) depth will be sunk from surface down into the orebody. Stolna Elisabeth is a 4.2-km- (2.6-mile-) long drift mined at a cross section of some 11 m2 (118 sq ft). The finished profile is 3.2-m- (10.5-ft-) wide by 3.6-m- (11.8-ft-) high. It has been developed on a very slight incline so that water runs down it to the portal. The portal is 450 m (1,476 ft) above sea level and the end of the tunnel is 475 m (1,558 ft) above sea level. Much of the rock through which it has been developed is magnesite with a compressive strength of 150 MPA. The drilling jumbo is an Atlas Copco twin-boom Boomer 282 Raildrill drilling 42- to 45-mm- (1.6- to 1.7-in.-) diameter holes to a maximum length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft), depending on ground conditions. This is a drill jumbo that Skanska has used successfully on a number of projects during its life. The condition of the rock through which this drift has been driven is extremely variable. Five classifications of A1 and A2 and B1, B2 and [ ] B3, where A1 is the most competent rock and B3 is the worst, have been established. The amount of support used, of which more later is determined by the classification of ground conditions. At the time of the author?s visit, the project it was about 40 days ahead of schedule, thanks to high advance rates. For instance 6 m/day (20 ft/d) was the plan for the advance to be achieved in B1 rock, but sometimes the crews have achieved 8 m/day (26 ft/d) ? which is the average for the whole project ? in those conditions. In A1 the best advance rate achieved is 12 m/day (39 ft/d). The loading unit is a Häggloader 9HR-B on crawler tracks with a pony track to run on the rails. This allows the unit to be towed up and down the drift along the rails. To load from the face, the Häggloader lowers the foot of its onboard conveyor system to the floor and the backhoe pushes material on to it. This digging arm-conveyor combination produces uninterrupted, optimal volume loading of the haulage unit, without spill ? a technique offering load capacities as high as 180 m3/h (6,356 cu ft/hour). The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is 57 km (35 miles) long and consists of two par-allel single-track tubes with an ex-cavation diameter ranging from 8.8 to 9.5 m (28.8 to 31.2 ft). These are interlinked by cross-passages every 312 m (1,000 ft). Two multifunction stations (MFS) are located in the sections Sedrun and Faido, at one-third and two-thirds of the entire tunnel length (Fig. 1). These will be used for the diversion of trains to the other main tube via tunnel crossovers, for the housing of tech-nical infrastructure and equipment and for potential emergency stops. To reduce construction time, the GBT was divided into five sections and was excavated from several sites simultaneously. The tunnel was excavated from the two portals, Erstfeld in the north and Bodio in the south, and also from three intermediate attacks, with their corresponding access tunnels, in Amsteg and Faido and two vertical 800-m (2,624-ft) deep shafts in Sedrun.

The Homestake Mine included the open cut and underground workings up to 2,484 m (8,150 ft) deep. The mine ceased mining activities in December 2001 after 125 years of operation. Pumping from the underground workings continued for 18 more months until June 10, 2003. Homestake had completed a comprehensive hydrologic evaluation on post-closure underground flooding prior to the shutdown of pumping. After closure, the mine was selected by the National Science Foundation as the site for the Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). An interim laboratory facility will be set at the 1478 m (4850 ft) Level. The final facility will be set at the 2256 m (7400 ft) Level or deeper. Pumping from the underground workings began on June 5, 2008 by the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA). During the period of June 2008 through March 2009, the pumping rate increased from 41 L/s (650 gpm) to 81 L/s (1,290 gpm) with an average rate of 60 L/s (950 gpm). As a result, the water level had been lowered more than 95 m (310 ft). It was found that the observed rebound and later decline to date is in close agreement with the model projections. Because of this, the authors of this paper reject claims of a lack of sufficient measurement devices in place and a lack of understanding of the hydrologic system at the Homestake Mine prior to shutdown of pumping in 2003 (Davis et al, 2009). Furthermore, it is believed that this validated model can serve as a useful tool for the SDSTA to manage future underground dewatering for the DUSEL operation. This paper evaluates the hydrologic conditions in the Homestake Mine area and projects the post-closure groundwater rebound and decline due to DUSEL pumping.

The earthmover tire shortage has been a case of bust and boom for the tire industry. Tire producers were unwilling to invest ahead of the mining boom. In their defense, though, the metals sector of the mining industry tends to be cyclic, tire manufacturers are not prescient. Until two years ago, low tire demand depressed prices. The incentive to invest in new, big-tire capacity was almost nonexistent, according to Prashant Prabhu, president of Michelin Earthmover Tire worldwide. “There has been very poor anticipation or a miscaluation of the amplitude of the (tire) demand on the part of just about everybody,” said Prabhu. What a turnaround. The earthmover tire market has grown by 30 percent over the past two years. Now there are not enough earth-mover tires and likely won’t be for the next two years. Goodyear said it was offering customers bias-ply tires when it could not supply enough radial-ply tires. Komatsu said it lost equipment sales because it could not provide the tires that customers requested. Volvo and Caterpillar said they are delivering some vehicles without tires, either promising tires later or leaving the customers – mine operators – to find their own rubber.

Metallic magnesium is mostly used in lightweight alloys in order to decrease fuel consumption in automotive applications. Several different production processes are currently used worldwide, and the magnesium production scenario is changing rapidly, with Chinese production increasingly dominating the world market. For the purpose of this paper, a novel approach to Life Cycle Assessment was applied, in which Material Flow Accounting and energy-based methods (Embodied Energy, Exergy and Emergy Analyses) are integrated and complemented, with a detailed description of the environmental hazards associated with emissions from all the different processes.

Australia’s Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) has achieved several successes during its first three years of operation. This initiative was developed through the Minerals Council of Australia, in conjunction with three partner universities involved in mining engineering education. The partner universities are the University of New South Wales (UNSW); Curtin University, the West Australian School of Mines (WASM); and the University of Queensland (UQ). The collaboration between these partner universities and industry has led to the development of shared course material, cross-institutional teaching arrangements, and the development of a number of flexible, distance-based delivery programs. This article then discusses future initiatives. Importantly, the challenge is the future initiative planned to cement this collaboration by the formation of a “virtual” national school of mining engineering: Mining Education Australia (MEA). This will provide a common third and fourth year program to all three universities beginning in 2007. The common program will involve innovative teaching and learning arrangements, greater student exchange potential and a more significant input by industry into the education process.

Mountain Top Removal (MTR) mining started in West Virginia nearly thirty years ago. This surface mining method can extract multiple coal seams as thin as a few inches thick with total recovery and minimum rock dilution in very steep mountainous terrain. It is highly efficient even if coal seams are in close proximity and small in aerial extent. Consequently, MTR has been widely used in the Central Appalachian Coalfield (mainly Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia) for the past thirty years with great success. In that respect, there has been no demand for research and little scientific research has been performed to investigate its impacts on the surroundings in the history of MTR mining. However, in the past two years the debate over the MTR mining has grown quickly and in times become very intensely. This paper describes chronologically the issues raised by various parties, legal actions, its impacts on mining permit application and research projects developed to address the issues.

The Wharf Resources mine, located in the Bald Mountain Mining District approximately 6.4 km (4miles) west of Lead, South Dakota, has operated a surface gold and silver mine and heap leaching processing facility since 1983. Wharf Resources intends to mine and process gold and silver ore from the Wharf Expansion area which is located on the eastern flank of the currently permitted Foley Ridge Mine. The Trojan Pit for the Wharf Expansion area was initially designed with an overall highwall slope angle of 45o. During mine permit presubmission meetings with personnel from the SD Department of Environment and Natural Resources (SD DENR), the question arose as to whether a detailed slope stability analysis of the proposed Trojan Pit highwalls was completed to justify the 45o slope. Wharf’s response was that the highwall design was based, in part, upon studies completed in1987 on the Annie Creek and Foley Ridge Mines; and, in part, upon subsequent slope stability analyses conducted by Wharf mine personnel through 1996. It was suggested by the SD DENR that the stability study be updated to reflect structural geological conditions in the Wharf Expansion area.
