Excellent underground industrial sites and warehouse facilities have been constructed in Europe and at several locations in the United States. Many quarry and mine operators are considering, or should consider, the possibilities of the development of their mineral properties in such a manner as to make underground space that is suitable for a secondary industrial use. Before proceeding with mine or quarry development, the operator should answer the following questions: 1) Is there a need for underground industrial space in your geographical area? 2) Is your deposit suitable for development of space for industrial usage? 3) If the deposit is suitable, what methods of development can be used? 4) What are the comparative economics of the different methods of space development? An honest analysis of the first two questions may eliminate the need for proceeding to the third. Affirmative answers to questions 1 and 2 should be followed by the engineering and economic studies required in response to questions 3 and 4.

Best known for its extensive bauxite and alumina exports, Jamaica also has a small but active industrial minerals sector. The island has for many years been a net exporter of small tonnages of gypsum, metallurgical-grade limestone and marble products. As bauxite and alumina earnings have declined the government of Jamaica has made extra efforts to promote growth of overseas sales of these nonmetallics. The nearby U.S. market is a natural first choice for new exports. Overview In 1984, Jamaica quarried an estimated 3.2 million cu m of marble and fill and an additional 3.5 million cu m of sand and gravel, for use in domestic construction. These amounts are in line with the production in earlier years of the 1980s but are not a factor in the export pattern and need not be considered further. Similarly, annual production of 15 million ton of silica sand for the manufacture of glass bottles is principally consumed by the domestic market.

President Reagan may be "a nice guy," but he is "misinformed, misdirected, and misadvised," when the subject is the state of the US copper industry, according to Sen. Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ). DeConcini took the opportunity as keynote speaker at the Arizona Conference AIME in Tucson to fire a few salvos at the Reagan Administration's industrial policies. "American copper used to stand above the rest of the world," he said. Now 21,000 copper workers, about half of the total, are out of work due to less expensive foreign imports. "Those 21,000 are real people, not statistics," he said. US production has been cut to one-third of its capacity, he said. And the Administration shows no signs of changing its position to favor US copper protection. "Third world copper towns are booming," he continued, "while ours are dying." Regardless of profits and despite oversupply, Chile continues to produce, he said. And, while US mines continue to close, "the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is handing more than $1 billion to six copper producing countries." President Reagan wanted $8.6 billion from the IMF. "I'm damn mad about it," DeConcini said. "For the life of me, I can't understand how this Administration can stand by while this industry is brought to its knees." Last year, the International Trade Commission ruled that imports were injuring domestic copper and recommended relief. The President, DeConcini said, vetoed those recommendations. DeConcini softened his tough talk a bit saying the President's image makes it difficult for people to not like him or stand up to him. "How can anyone stand up to President Reagan?" he asked. "He's such a nice guy. But it's time someone did. He's just misinformed, misdirected, and misadvised. We must take real action and we must have a president who understands this." DeConcini said he has introduced legislation aimed at helping domestic copper. It would limit copper imports to 385 kt/a (425,000 stpy). Imports now stand at about 635 kt/a (700,000 stpy). The bill would also impose a $0.33/kg ($0.15-per lb) duty on foreign copper. DeConcini called the duty a sort of "environmental equalizer" because that is the amount domestic producers must spend on pollution control devices. Foreign competitors do not have such controls, he said. "I face people who are damn mad that this country is being pushed around," he concluded. "It's time we stand up and say we can be competitive. If they (foreign countries) put an import duty on our stuff, we will do the same. It's time this country stopped being the nice guy." As if to underscore domestic copper's desperate situation described by the Senator, Duval Corp. announced about the same time as the meeting that it has nearly closed its eastside office in Tucson. Staff has been reduced from 120 to four. Spokesman Dean Lynch said the four will consist of President A. Everett Smith, a secretary, a person in environmental affairs, and another in purchasing. Duval is also selling an office and a laboratory in Tucson. Pennzoil Co., Duval's parent, has been trying to sell the company for more than a year. It began dismantling Duval in November 1984. Pennzoil took over its subsidiary's profitable sulfur operation in Texas, sold the New Mexico potash facility, and spun off gold interests in Nevada, forming Battle Mountain Gold. Northwest Mining Association - Spokane Rock Jenkins, Associate Editor The true role of minerals needs to be realized by both the policy makers and the people of the US, according to Robert Dale Wilson, director of the Office of Strategic Resources, US Commerce Department. In addition, a re-thinking of the theory of free trade and competitive advantage is necessary. Wilson made his remarks in December at the opening luncheon of the 91st Annual Convention of the Northwest Mining, Association in Spokane, WA. At a later press conference, Wilson said one of the mining industry's main problems is that its presence in Washington has been reduced in the past few years. Part of this can be seen by events within the American Mining Congress (AMC), he said. "The problem with AMC," Wilson said, "is that in 1981, when Reagan came in, no problems were seen for mining and a lot of their (AMC's) lobbyists were let go." He

5.1 TECHNOLOGY FOR INJECTING GROUT INTO BOREHOLES The grouting of fractured rock aquifers is carried out in separate stopes' whose size is determined by the hydro¬stratigraphy and the hydrogeologic properties of the rocks. The number of grouting stopes required depends on the number of intervals in the hydrogeological section. Each grouting stope can include one or several aquifers. Com¬bining several water-producing strata into one stope is pos¬sible only when the values of their permeability coefficients are very similar. In order to achieve efficiency, as many aquifers as possible are included in each stope. In practice, the length of a grouting stope in a borehole usually ranges within 10 to 40 m, but occasionally up to 100 m or more. When conducting grouting operations through boreholes drilled from the face of underground workings, the stope's size can be determined by the thick¬ness of each fractured zone (fault) or by the length of the hole if the entire rock is fractured. Injecting grout into separate intervals of fractured rock can be done from the bottom to the top with ascending stopes or from the top to the bottom with descending stopes. Injection from bottom to top is always preferred. Injection also can be accomplished in separate fractured permeable horizons in the section. The STG integrated grouting method is based on the use of packer and injection equipment and technological schemes that facilitate injection in highly isolated fractured aquifers. For this purpose STG has developed a standard series of packers. 5.1.1 INJECTING GROUT THROUGH BOREHOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Grout can be injected according to one of four techno¬logical schemes depending on the depth of the fractured aquifers, their hydrogeologic properties and the availability of grout injection equipment if the area is remote (Fig. 43). In the first and most preferred technological scheme (1), the grout is injected from the bottom up with ascending stopes. When this scheme is employed, grouting holes are drilled to the entire projected depth based on the field investigations injection tubes is installed above the top of the first hydrostratigraphic unit to be grouted. This scheme al¬lows the grout to be injected only into the permeable stra¬tum or strata isolated by the packer near the bottom of the hole; it precludes the need to clean or redrill the hole before injecting grout into the next overlying stope. This ascending stope scheme is preferred because of its simplicity and ef¬ficiency. It is used in most of the grouting of saturated fractured rock for the purpose of isolating aquifers while excavating deep mine shafts in the USSR. The second technological scheme (II in Fig. 43) injects the grout in sequence from top to bottom with descending stopes. Injection under this scheme is accomplished through the hermetically-sealed mouth of the hole. It is most advis¬able to grout with descending stopes in saturated fractured rock wherein the aquifers constitute thick networks of frac¬tures. Under these conditions it is practically impossible to drill a grout hole to the entire depth of the underground workings due to the large production rate of ground water. In conducting isolation operations with descending stopes, additional work (relative to ascending stopes) is necessary to drill out the grout in order to create and inject the next stope. As a result, the total amount of drilling required to drill out grout can even exceed the volume of drilling of original rock. Consequently it is advisable to use this inefficient scheme only for injecting grout into holes that contain prolific frac¬tured aquifers at depths less than 150 to 200 m. The third and fourth technological schemes (III and IV in Fig. 43) are used in the selective grouting of separate aquifers. For example, these methods would be applied when a grout hole is drilled to its entire depth, wherein grouting of the upper aquifers must be done first so that the sinking of the first shaft can begin prior to deeper grouting. The third technological scheme is used for the selective injection of grout into an aquifer with a thickness of up to 5 m. For this work the DAU-1-2 removable dual packer is installed. It is lowered into the borehole on an injection pipeline. For aquifers with thicknesses of more then 5 m, the selective injection of the grout is carried out according to the fourth technological scheme; a combination of the DAU-2 hydrodynamic plug and the DAU-1 packing device is used. In order to implement this injection scheme, the DAU-2 hydro-dynamic plug is installed at the bottom of the fractured aquifer and the DAU-1 packer is installed at the top of the aquifer.

The evolution of technology has made the world a more connected place. It continues to change the way we power our homes and vehicles and is leading to a future that seems to be limitless. Limitless as long as we can continue to supply the minerals necessary for technology to produce better iPhones, more efficient electric cars, better wind turbines and sophisticated national defense systems. These minerals, dubbed critical minerals, have surged in importance in every corner of the world and, on Aug. 3-4, they were topic of conversation at the Critical Minerals 2014 conference in Denver, CO. The conference, hosted by SME and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), looked at critical minerals from every angle, from where they are found to what the future might be. Among the minerals that have been called critical are rare earths, a collection of 17 minerals that have become increasingly important as technology continues to advance in everything from communications to energy to national defense. Leading off the conference, David Abraham, senior fellow at the Institute for Analysis of Global Security, explained that, like many people, he is relatively new to rare earths. Unlike most people, though, Abraham developed more than a passing interest in the minerals and has since travelled the world to understand the role of rare earths ? where they are found, how they are mined, how they get to market and, eventually, what applications they are used in. Following his travels, he said he returned concerned about the sector and how the industry will keep up with the demand that only seems to be growing in the modern world. And, Abraham noted, that it is not just the developed world that is driving demand. It stretches even to places like Indonesia, where the average annual income is about $3,000/year. Yet, the nation is one of the most active places in the world for social media with a population that is wired in with all kinds of electronics. The problem facing the sector is, and has been for a long time, and especially since 2010, supply of the minerals. At one time, China produced about 98 percent of the world?s supply and controlled the sector completely. In 2010, as the world began to demand more rare earths and develop other sources, China announced an export ban on rare earths. This changed the game completely, from the production lines all the way to the floor of the U.S. Congress.

INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations' information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. The first part of this two-part article summarizes the result of a 10-year, multimillion dollar research and plant testing program involving operating mining companies throughout the world. The program was aimed at developing a better understanding of the influence of slurry rheology on the performance of mineral/coal grinding circuits. Part 1 presents the basic concepts identified, including typical laboratory results showing the influence on grinding behavior of controlled changes in percent solids, particle size, slurry temperature, and viscosity control chemicals. Part 2, in January, will illustrate typical industrial scale test results on both open and closed circuits using the concepts presented in Part 1. Special emphasis will be placed on identifying some industrial operating implications of controlling rheology by different methods. Introduction The industrial-scale practice of wet grinding minerals and coals in tumbling media mills (ball, rod, and pebble) is well-known to operating mineral processing engineers and plant design personnel. Over the last century, considerable experience and data has been collected, correlated, and put into rules or guidelines for successful circuit design and operation. Typical factors influencing circuit throughput that have been analyzed in some depth are mill diameter and length, grinding media size and loading, feed and product particle size, mill power use, and the interaction of classifier type and efficiency with the grinding device. Until recently, knowledge of slurry rheology influence on large scale grinding circuit performance has been limited. Even today slurry rheology effects are essentially ignored in plant design. Indeed, in most plant operations only qualitative guidelines are followed. For example, too thick a slurry causes throughput losses and too thin a slurry uses excessive water or causes water handling problems such as pumping limitations. A search of published literature and numerous discussions with experienced plant operating personnel has shown an awareness that changing the percent of solids in the mill influences grinding or the response of grinding involving fine feeds versus coarse feeds. However, most the work identified relative to rheology effects in mineral/coal grinding was qualitative. Even in the few studies that were more quantitative, the scope of the work was usually too narrow to draw general conclusions. Also, the detailed rheological characterization tied to observed breakage and the combination of laboratory to industrial-scale testing that is required to develop a broad understanding of any factor influencing grinding had not been done. In this environment, this detailed program began in 1967. It had three distinct goals: • To develop a basic understanding of slurry rheology influence on breakage characteristics in the laboratory. • To test general rheology concepts developed in the lab on the industrial scale. • To develop a commercially viable chemical approach to controlling slurry rheology that would lead to the use of chemical grinding additives or grinding aids. The goals have been met, at least in part, this year. A small fraction of the extensive laboratory and plant results have been made available in published literature. Much of the research program dealt with identifying and developing chemical grinding aids, but a lot of useful and practical information on percent solids, particle size, and slurry temperature influence on grinding circuit performance also was collected. The purpose of this article is to present a clear and concise sum¬mary of the results of the entire program. The importance of rhe¬ology control in grinding circuit behavior will be demonstrated using a series of carefully per¬formed industrial scale experi¬ments (both open and closed cir¬cuits) that have not yet been reported in general literature. Mining companies participating in the test program on a proprie¬tary basis have found the informa¬tion in this article to be useful in better understanding and improv¬ing circuit performance. Viscosity Effects in Grinding Studies In this program&apos;s previous labo¬ratory studies, it was shown that there is a consistent pattern of change in specific rates of break¬age of both mineral and coal slur¬ries as slurry fluidity changes. Using the net production rate of material smaller than some spec¬ified size-for example, kg/hr of <75 µm (200 mesh)-as an index of mill production in a standard batch mill test (with a given feed material, feed size, mill, and mill conditions such as constant time of grind), the following facts were established (see Fig. 1): • The normal range of low den¬sity, low viscosity slurry (region A) gave no variation in mill produc¬tion. The measured rates of break¬age exhibited normal first order grinding. • Grinding of a somewhat higher viscosity slurry (region B) could give increased production. The higher viscosity was obtained

Fluid energy grinding, or jet pulverization, refers to the process of entraining solid particles in high velocity gaseous or vaporous streams and reducing their size by impact and attrition against other particles or some sort of target. Since all desired size reduction is not achieved in one pass through the zone where energy is applied, some form of classification is necessary to return oversize particles to the grinding zone for further size reduction. Applications Fluid energy mills have normally been used to produce products where the particle size is basically finer than 325 mesh. Products having particle size distributions with a maximum size of 4 or 5 µm, and with a high percentage finer than I µm, can be produced using fluid energy mills. More recently, some fluid energy grinding units have been applied economically to produce ground products with 1 or 2% coarser than 200 mesh. It is also possible to consider usage of a jet-pulverizing zone, without the usual integrated air classi¬fier, operated either in open circuit or in conjunction with a screen. Feed sizes to be delivered to the fluid energy mill depend on the material involved, the type of jet pulverizer used, the finished product size requirement, and the upstream process. In some units feed sizes up to l in. or larger can be accepted, but practical economics usually require the starting material to be -4 mesh or smaller and some pulverizers are typically fed at 20 mesh top size. It is not unusual to find feed materials at essentially -325 mesh when extremely fine products are needed, since capacities are improved with finer feeds. Conventionally the fluid energy grinding process has been used for relatively soft and nonabrasive materials. This includes very low¬melting-point and temperature-sensitive materials or coatings, since there is no measurable temperature rise during fluid energy milling. More recently, however, jet pulverizers are being used on highly abra¬sive materials such as silica, feldspar, glass, zircon, calcined alumina, coke, boron carbide, and similar materials. Since the primary energy application is by impact of particles against themselves, there is a low rate of wear resulting in a small amount of product contamination and in low maintenance costs. Usually the fluid energy pulverizer produces a more narrow particle size distribution than other mills provide, and this is useful where such a requirement exists. It is possible, within limits, to adjust classifi¬cation and other functions of the overall fluid energy system to vary the particle size distribution curve and thereby approach the broader distribution obtained from other grinding methods. By controlling the temperature, composition, and humidity of the fluid used, it is possible to incorporate other functions with the size-reduction process. These include drying or adding moisture, coating, mixing and blend¬ing, and even oxidation or reduction and other chemical reactions or their inhibition. The finished product is discharged in the fluid stream and is conveyed pneumatically to the desired point, where a suitable dust collector must be provided. Operation and Mechanical Features One of the earliest fluid energy mills is the Micronizer now manu¬factured by the Sturtevant Mill Co. Similar units are also manufac¬tured by Jet Pulverizer Co. and others. As shown in Fig. 81, the micronizer consists of a shallow circular grinding chamber with noz¬zles arranged at the outer periphery to discharge tangentially inward. Fluid (usually compressed air or superheated steam) is provided to the nozzles from a manifold at pressures normally in the range of 100-150 psig and at temperatures up to 800°F or higher, depending on the raw material, required results, and economic factors. The com¬pressible fluid expands to high velocity through the nozzles and gener¬ates a spiral flow pattern in the grinding chamber, and discharges

For every blast pattern, zones of unique material types need to be classified before mining. Most material types can be summarized into different kinds of ore and waste. Blocks generated from blasthole assays are too small to be selectively mined, so areas with a single material classification meeting the mine’s selective mining unit must be defined. Current industry standard practices are to manually draw ore/waste dig limits, but this process is subjective and results in quantities of dilution and ore loss that can be improved upon to enhance the profitability of mining operations. In this study, two weeks of production data from a homogeneous copper (Cu) porphyry and heterogeneous manto-type Cu deposit were used to assess the variability in the hand-drawn dig limits of 20 geologists, mining engineers and ore control specialists, which were compared with the optimal ore/waste delineation. The profit for 20 distinct hand-drawn dig limits for the homogeneous mine varied by 3.7 percent, from $10.5 million to $10.9 million, averaging at $10.8 million. The percentage was nearly double for the more heterogeneous mine at 5.9 percent, from $17.9 million to $19.0 million, averaging at $18.6 million. Using the optimal ore waste delineation, the profit increased to $11.0 million (1.9 percent increase) and $19.3 million (7.0 percent increase) for the homogeneous and heterogeneous deposit, respectively. The natural variability, diggability requirement and selectivity are identified as the main drivers of ore loss and dilution. Recommendations are provided for reducing the subjectivity in manual hand-drawn dig limits by integrating dig limit optimization algorithms as a tool to assist practitioners.

For this paper, blending is conceived as a linear process that takes a proportion from one stockpile or location and mixes it with another proportion from another stockpile or location, with the aim of obtaining a set of attributes in the final combination that satisfies a given quality standard. A blending class is the combination of ore attributes and grade limits that should be stockpiled in order to achieve the target quality for the process Plant. Current literature considers the number of blending classes in the Open Pit Scheduling Problem as fixed; however, this paper shows how to define specific blending classes for a given deposit so that the schedule can be solved with Sequential Linear Programming. Finally, a practical application in a Peruvian copper mine is shown, involving four ore attributes: alteration code, arsenic, oxide content and copper grade. INTRODUCTION In copper ore deposits, blending for quality has not been a typical issue as it was for coal and iron ore; however, current copper deposits in the world are becoming geologically and chemically more complex than in the past and is not uncommon to have quality standards involving up to four attributes, introducing an additional complexity to the mine scheduling process [1]. In order to solve the Open Pit Scheduling Problem with multiple ore quality constraints, two assumptions are necessary [2]: - Grade constraints are defined only by specifying an upper and lower limit; - Ore attributes in stockpiles are pre-determined, i.e., the upper and/or lower grade limits defining each stockpile are already known at the time of setting the schedule. Assuming each ore attribute is classified as high, medium or low, and there are four attributes to be controlled in the target ore quality, the number of possible blending classes would be 3^4 = 81. This number is impractical to manage in Operations, and increases the complexity at the time of running the schedule; therefore, a more efficient way of classifying ore is required. Note that in practice, one blending class can be split into more than one stockpile location due to physical capacity constraints. Therefore, the number of stockpiles could even be more than 81. BLENDING CLASSES DETERMINATION For a given set of ore grades with lower and upper limits to be achieved, one has to find all feasible ore classes such that when blended, their grades will lie within those limits.

In 1991, US mine production of barite decreased 3.4%. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 11.7%. Imports also decreased by 15.4% over 1990. World mine production increased I%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, increased 3.3% according to the Bureau. The declared value c.i.f. US port of all imported crude barite during 1991 increased from $40.61/t ($36.84/st) in 1990 to $42.35/t ($38.42/st), the Bureau stated. Nevada was the leading producer of barite with 78% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 75% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 25% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 93% was used in drilling fluids. The remaining 7% was in the non-oilfield sector, including barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics and glass. Tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1990. The average number of rotary rigs operating was 860. That was 14.9% less than the 1990 average of 1010 in the US. Crude barite imports were 138 kt (152,000 st) less than 1990 or 15.4%. Imports accounted for 70% of the (ap¬parent) barite consumed in the US. During 1991, China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the US with 85.1 %. India followed with 14.8%. About 97.5% of the imported barite ore was used in the oilfield sector. Ground barite imports decreased from 56.7 to 46.2 kt (62,500 to 51,000 st) 1991. Mexico was a major exporter to the US, accounting for 75.3% of the total ground barite imports. Canada shipped 23.7%, while other countries accounted for less than 1 %, primarily for the nonoilfield market. During 1991, the number of grinding plants supplying the drilling fluids market along the Gulf Coast was reduced from 12 to 10. Derjaguin and Dukhin [1] were the first to develop a first-principle flotation model by considering the role of surface forces in bubble-particle interactions. According to the model, the ζ-potentials of particles constitute the energy barriers, E12, for particle (1)-bubble (2) interactions, which corroborates well with the observation that flotation recoveries reach maxima under conditions of zero-zeta potentials. In the present work, a series of surface force measurements were conducted for the quartz-dodecylamine hydrochloride (DAH) flotation system, for which detailed studies had been conducted by D.W. Fuerstenau [2], including the measurements of zeta-potentials, contact angles and collector adsorption as a function of pH.

The objective of this work was to assess the influence of parameters such as residence time, solid content, and temperature in a process route towards purified rare earth liquor which could be adequate to produce marketable rare earth products. The steps of the process route proposed in this study comprised water leaching of a sulfated rare earth ore and removal of impurities through the purification of the rare earth sulfuric liquor, which is the product of the water leaching step. The sample used in the water leaching experiments was a sulfated rare earth ore produced by the reaction of a beneficiated rare earth ore with sulfuric acid followed by roasting at 700 °C for 2 h in a muffle furnace and cooling at 20 °C. The water leaching experiments showed that the best condition comprised a residence time of 30 min, temperature of 20 °C, and solid content of 10% w/w, resulting in a recovery of 71.3% of the rare earth elements (REE) and a lower impurity extraction, e.g., only 15.0% of Fe, representing the main impurity in the rare earth ore. Even when presenting low amounts of impurities, the rare earth sulfuric liquor still needed to be purified before it can be used in the production of marketable rare earth products. In the study, the rare earth sulfuric liquors were purified in two consecutive neutralization steps, first by dosing the limestone pulp to pH up to 3.5 and secondly by adding the lime pulp to raise the pH from 3.5 to 5.0. The application of two consecutive purification steps at 20 °C resulted in the highest overall REE recoveries (65.4%) throughout all the steps of the process, being 71.3% in the water leaching, 99.6% in the partial purification with limestone pulp, and 92.1% in the purification with lime pulp at 20 °C. Under this condition, there was a total elimination of Fe, P, and Th and a significant reduction in the Al, U, and sulfate concentrations in the purified rare earth liquor. The purified rare earth liquor attained through the experiment is expected to be amenable to be used in the production of marketable products due to the lower impurities/REO mass ratios.

Geochemical characteristics, shapes and surface textures of manganese nodules from two blocks located in the southern (9°N~11°N) (KR5) and northern parts (16°N~17°N) (KR2) of the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone between 130°W and 133°W were investigated in terms of sediment distribution and metal contents for better understanding of controlling factors of seabed manganese nodule genesis. Two blocks, ~700 km away, are dominated by the nodules with different origins, each of which has distinctive chemical compositions and shapes. KR2 block is dominated by irregular and poly-type nodules of hydrogenetic origin with low Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and high Fe and Co contents, while KR5 block is dominated by discoidal and ellipsoidal nodules of diagenetic origin with high Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and low Fe and Co contents. In addition, nodules from two blocks show different surface textures: smooth and transitional in KR2 and dimorphic and rough in KR5. Sediment distribution is also distinctly different in two blocks. The study area consists of three sediment types: Unit 1 ? dark brown mud with an intermediate metal content, Unit 2 - yellowish brown mud with poor metal content, and Unit 3 ? black metalliferous mud. KR2 is characterized by the thick occurrences (<250 cm) of Unit 1 at the surface while Unit 1 distributes thin (<12 cm) in KR5. Higher primary production rate in the southern block proximal to equator and resulting high supply rate of metals to the sediment might be the cause for the dominance of diagenetic nodules in the southern block, but potential controls of different sediment distribution on the nodule genesis can not be excluded. If it is the case, Unit 1 with an intermediate metal content likely has been acting as a sink for metals by precipitating micro-nodules within the sediment column. Within the KR5, the hydrogenetic nodules occur preferentially on the seabed where Unit 3 distributes at shallower depth (<50 cm). Unit 3 has 2 or 3 times higher metal contents than other types of sediments. It might play the same role as Unit 1 in the northern block that prevents the supply of metals to the sediment surface. With the rapid development of renewable energy technology, such as electricity reserves to store energy for electric and battery-electric vehicles, environmentally friendly energy sources are expected to continue to be tapped to meet mobility and stationary energy needs. Lithium is the most attractive candidate for energy storage development. The presence of lithium in the Sidoarjo mud in Indonesia makes it interesting for use as an alternative source of raw material. In this research work, sulfuric acid was used as a solvent, and hydrogen peroxide as an oxidation agent. Lithium recovery was studied with a leaching process at various temperatures (30, 45 and 60 °C) and sulfuric acid concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 mol/L). Increases in temperature, sulfuric acid concentration and hydrogen peroxide concentration were found to directly affect the lithium recovery. An increase in sulfuric acid concentration is directly proportional to the recovery of lithium in the solution. Optimum conditions were obtained at a sulfuric acid concentration of 6 mol/L and temperature of 60 °C. The shrinking core model was used to study leaching kinetics, and ash layer diffusion acted as a rate-controlling process. The activation energy of the leaching process was found to be 38.90 kJ/mol.

INTRODUCTION Zortman Mining Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pegasus Gold Corporation of Spokane, Washington. Pegasus has been producing gold and silver from the Zortman and Landusky mines since 1979. The Zortman and Landusky mines are two distinct open pit mines located approximately 6 kilometers apart in the Little Rockies Mining District of north central Montana. The two mines use large-tonnage, low- grade heap leaching techniques to efficiently process the gold and silver ore. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Little Rockies rise abruptly 914 metres from the surrounding plains to about 1829 metres above sea level. The topography is quite steep, making efficient leach pad construction a major challenge. The climate is semi-arid with moderate summers and occasionally severe winters. Freezing temperatures usually arrive in late October or early November, influencing the effectiveness of leaching operations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY The geology of the Little Rocky Mountains consists of steeply dipping sedimentary ridges forming an elliptical dome surrounding a core of intruding syenite porphyry. Within the syenite porphyry are well fractured and mineralized shear zones where the existing reserves and open pits are located. The ore is presently divided into oxidized, mixed, and sulfide. Only the oxides and mixed zones that are of ore grade are placed on the leach pads. The syenite porphyry host rock enables effective leaching of gold and silver to depths of 61 metres, having a major impact on leach pad construction costs. MINING All mining since 1979 has been by contractor. This enabled initial mining to commence without capital investment in equipment. Through competitive negotiations, Pegasus has been able to keep contract mining costs at levels very close to what would be experienced if Pegasus had purchased equipment initially. Contracts are negotiated yearly and are based on a unit price and haul distance for ore and waste. Haul distances have ranged from as little as 457 metres to as much as 3,050 metres. At present, Pegasus is developing a 27,000,000-tonne leach pad at the Landusky project that is adjacent to the minine area. This design feature will reduce the mining cost by 20 percent over the life of the mine. In 1987, over 5,900,000 tonnes of ore and 3,200,000 tonnes of waste will be mined at the Landusky project. Through 1986, 13,763,000 tonnes of ore have been mined at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.60:l at the Zortman project, and 13,005,000 tonnes of ore at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.79:l have been mined at the Landusky project. Current mining reserves are 32,769,000 tonnes of ore at a waste- to-ore strip ratio of 0.59:l. Through efficiencies of large-scale heap leaching, Pegasus has been able to lower the mining cutoff from 0.34 grams per tonne gold to 0.27 grams per tonne gold. This has reduced the mining cost per tonne of ore h percent through a reduction in strip ratio of 14 percent. Beginning in 1984, all pits were designed based on computer-generated "floating cone" pits. The geologic models were developed by Pegasus staff with a series of economic models evaluated. The resulting computer-generated pits were used as a guideline in designing the mine plans, including haul roads for final calculation of tons and grade. Input to the floating cone models consisted of mining cost, processing cost, cutoff grade (0.34 grams gold per tonne), recovery (67 percent) and gold price. Due to the gold being deposited primarily on the fractures of the syenite host rock, no crushing of ore is needed prior to leaching. This characteristic of the ore is a key in being able to profitably mine and process gold ore at an average grade of 0.69 grams of gold per tonne. Strict blasting control is also a key in success of the leaching operation. A system of splitting ore and waste in blast patterns has been devised to reduce dilution. From 2009 to 2012, Aker Wirth, in cooperation with the BGR (German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources), developed a concept for the deep sea mining of manganese nodules, which it also examined by means of a profitability analysis. The study was undertaken for the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The increasing scarcity of resources, coupled with the continuous rise in resource prices, drive the search for new raw material deposits. As a result, the deep sea is coming increasingly under the spotlight. At depths of more than 1,000 m (3,280 ft), large deposits of ores and precious and high-tech metals, such as manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper and gold, along with rare earths (which are important for the high-tech industry), can be found. The extreme deep sea conditions ? enormous water pressure, ice-cold temperatures and complete darkness ? present huge financial and technical challenges to the mining industry when extracting these materials. The complex mineralogy of the Porgera resource has a pronounced effect on process selection for the recovery of refractory gold and silver. Intimate association of gold with pyrite necessitates a high degree of sulphur preoxidation to achieve acceptable levels of gold recovery. Acid pressure oxidation has been demonstrated to be the only commercially proven process capable of achieving the required level of pyrite oxidation. Gangue mineralization dictates preconcentration of the sulphides to limit the acid consuming capacity and carbon dioxide generation during oxidation. However, the relationship between concentrate sulphur grade and gold recovery to concentrate ultimately governs the optimum degree of sulphide preconcentration. Minipiloting of the preconcentration and oxidation stages of the Porgera flowsheet are described. The influence of these processes on subsequent recovery of precious metals together with the technical and economic necessity of concentrate pretreatment prior to oxidation are discussed.

Capstone Copper’s Pinto Valley Mine faced challenges in recovering rock and ore on final walls because of geotechnical constraints that require restrictions on methods for loading blastholes adjacent to the pit boundaries to preserve wall stability. The operation had been using the same drill and blast designs for years. With changing geology, such as harder rock, as mining progressed, material was being left unmined in final walls because of poor breakage. The amount of unrecovered, unprocessed ore was estimated at approximately 380,000 tons a year generated from an average of 60 final wall blasts performed annually. The engineering team from Capstone and Dyno Nobel engaged to minimize the amount of material left on the final pit walls. This paper presents how we collected data, reviewed design standards, and found opportunities to improve ore recovery from pit final walls without increasing drilling and blasting costs. The results collected from implementing the new design on two benches showed the potential for extra revenue of approximately $3.6 million generated annually from reducing final wall unrecoverable underbreak by nearly 71% on the mine’s highwalls.

The remarks that follow are based substan¬tially on experience covering 45 years, 80% of which have been in placer work, rather than on a review of available literature. Most commercial placers have been deposited by the action of water. The richer and more-difficult-to-mine placers are those in the headwater areas where gradients are steepest. The most lucrative placers are generally in intermediate areas where volumes are greater, fewer boulders are present, and gradients are from 3% to 1 ½ . The higher volume, lower grade placers are in the lower reaches of river systems where gradients are lower. Where gold-bearing rivers have discharged into the sea, wave action can concentrate values on beaches, past and present.
