Gold has always fascinated mankind. From Tutankhamen's mask to the huge nuggets that have been found in the Australian outback, gold has quickened the pulse and fevered the eye. But in recent years, governments around the western world have shown a singular lack of interest in research into gold processing, with many programs being cut. There are some notable exceptions, fortunately, and this paper summarizes a large research effort that is well supported by the Australian government and the Australian gold industry. The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy is an unincorporated joint venture between the CSIRO Division of Minerals, Murdoch University, Curtin University of Technology and the Western Australian Department of Minerals and Energy. The Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) is the Parker Centre's broker for generic R&D contracts with industry. Each of the partners makes available staff, students and equipment to further the work of the Parker Centre, and the Australian Government provides additional funding. The Parker Centre is nearly five years old and has grown spectacularly in that time. There are now about 30 full-time-equivalents of effort from 50 scientists and engineers, as well as about 40 postgraduate and honours students. The fundamentals of the key operations in hydrometallurgy are studied in three programs: leaching (which includes pretreatment by roasting etc), precipitation (or crystallisation), and surface processes (which includes solid/liquid separation, adsorption, solvent extraction, etc). A large part of the Parker Centre's R&D is directed towards gold processing technology. In Australia, a dramatic increase in gold production, from about 30 to nearly 300 tonnes per year (1977-1997), has been made possible largely as a result of a brilliant metallurgical innovation, the carbon-in-pulp process. However, falling head grades eg 2.56 to 1.84 g(Au)/t over the last 10 years, and environmental concerns, are squeezing profit margins. There is increasing pressure to reduce costs, and the Parker Centre program is focussed on providing the scientific understanding required to do this. A selection of research highlights will be given, to indicate the depth and breadth of the R&D at the Parker Centre.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) represents one of the most intractable problems faced by the non-ferrous metal and coal mining sectors, and the creation in the recent past of a number of high-level national and international initiatives reflects the growing concerns of industry, government and other stakeholder groups. ARD is certainly considered one of the most serious environmental impacts caused by mining and the industry's greatest environment-related technical challenge. Additionally, the global depletion of non-acid generating oxide ore deposits and the increasing dominance of sulphide ores means that the potential for ARD incidents will continue to increase. Once initiated, the cycle of chemically and biologically mediated and catalysed reactions leading to ARD generation is difficult to stop. While there is evidence to suggest that the degree of contamination of ARD will decrease rapidly within a relatively short timeframe (Wood et al., 1999), experience in historic mining regions of the world indicates that the problem may persist for centuries at certain sites. Current best practice in dealing with ARD puts the emphasis on prediction and prevention, planned from the outset of the operation and integrated with each phase of the mine site life cycle. The elements that constitute best practice are becoming more clearly defined and as this process of clarification continues industry will undoubtedly accelerate the process of best practice implementation, burying at last the image of mining as a despoiler and polluter of landscapes, an image based on past, rather than current, practices. However, it is equally clear that despite the best efforts of industry and regulators, many sites will continue to generate ARD during operation and following closure - in many cases, a legacy of ARD has been derived from operational and strategic decisions made decades ago, before the risks and impacts of the self-sustaining cycle of ARD generation were properly understood. Add to this ARD generation from poorly managed operations and from historic and abandoned sites, and it becomes clear that the treatment of ARD will be required for the foreseeable future to protect water quality, and ecosystem and human health.

The Research Council of SME, at its Annual Meeting in Reno, NR, in February 1993, held a Research Forum on Technology for the Future. The Forum's purpose was to find out from the members, particularly those from industry, their opinions on research needed in the mineral industries. Panelists were selected for their breadth of knowledge and connections. Many panelists, in turn, solicited opinions from additional contacts. A similar effort is underway with mineral-oriented schools. A parallel mission has been undertaken by the American Mining Congress (AMC) through its Committee on Technology. In particular, AMC is concerned that the needs of industry be transmitted in a timely way to federal agencies, especially the US Bureau of Mines. This article reports to the SME membership the principal findings of the Research Forum. The article is derived from a full report that is available from SME. Many of the calls for research made during the Forum can be clustered into five broad categories. These categories are discussed in the following sections of this article. However, since the time of the Forum, many reviewers of the full report have noticed that fundamental research was not given much emphasis. The Research Council points out that the Forum was organized around industrial needs. There is a call to the academic and research community to organize a similar Forum. The Council emphasizes that this is not the last word on research needs and that the membership is urged to continue to give ideas and opinions to the SME Research Council. There will be an opportunity at its next meeting during the SME Annual Meeting in Albuquerque, NM, Feb. 22, 1994, for open discussion of this report. Because the opinions were intentionally confined to representatives from industry, the problems portrayed and the solutions sought are from the vantage of an operator. It comes as no surprise that many of the espoused research desiderata seek more efficient or cost-effective outcomes for the various mining activities discussed. The order of the Forum was a straightforward set of mining activities: exploration, evaluation, mining and processing.

Many in mining believe that the industry is slipping behind in public image, in public mineral education and, particularly, in mining's basic right to do business. It is critical to turn things around - to change the rules of the game soon - before mining loses any chance of recovery. In the industry's experience, there is a technique of project development and operation that can help gain ground on public opinion. Only recently has this technique had a name, and that is sustainable development. What is sustainable development? Sustainable development is broadly accepted and supported by the international business community. And significant thought and work has been devoted to the subject. Research into the topic was initially confusing because the definitions of sustainable development are written in terms the writer, and his or her constituency understands. To some, it refers to environmental protection. To others, it is about social responsibility. And to the developer, it is about economic benefit. Slowly a theme emerged from the research that seemed to be part of all the definitions. That theme has three parts. First, the development, whatever or wherever it is, must contribute economic value to the developer and the stakeholders of the development. Stakeholders in this context include employees, neighbors, residents of the surrounding area, citizens of the country, suppliers and all others affected by the development. Next, sustainable development must contribute environmental value. This means that at a very minimum it must be neutral and not cause irreparable damage. And last, and what is new for miners and most other businessmen, it must contribute real social value to the stakeholders. How to use the concept? With that three-part theme as a working definition, the mining industry must find ways to use that “the challenge is for an individual company to translate what sustainable development means for them. There is no one model..." Donald W. Gentry is president and chief executive officer of Polymet Mining and former professor emeritus of mining engineering at Colorado School of Mines. He added: "While simple to state, the concept is anything but simple to implement. Present trends indicate ... one wins the sustainable development argument by staking out the high ground early..." In other words, start using sustainable development principles at the beginning of the project. New ways of doing business The mining industry's challenge is to implement sus¬tainable development universally around the world. Paternalism as a way of doing business is dead and a new model of doing business is emerging. All types of businesses are learning to deal with the stakeholders of new developments. Mining cannot be an exception to these trends. To understand how the international mining business came to sustainable development, it is useful to look back a few years. For many North American mining engineers, there were few opportunities for foreign assignments from the 1960s to the 1980s. Research was conducted at a western coal mine on a wide variety of underground mining vehicles to develop testing procedures for portable instrumentation monitoring of tailpipe concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), carbon dioxide (CO2) carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO). DPM was measured using the Emissions Measurement Appa¬ratus (EMA) developed by Michigan Technological University (MTU), and an ECOM-KL five-gas analyzer was used to measure gaseous tailpipe concentrations. Baseline concentrations of the tailpipe pollutants were measured using vehicle systems to load the engine. Concentrations before and after the water scrubber were measured and water scrubber efficiencies were estimated by calculation. Field measurement procedures were established. Heavy-duty vehicles with automatic transmissions were loaded using the torque converter to stall the engine. Consistent engine loading for light-duty vehicles with manual transmissions involved placing the transmission in neutral and adjusting the throttle to maintain a constant engine speed of 2,500 rpm. Tailpipe CO2 concentrations for Caterpillar 3306 and 3304 engines were compared to laboratory CO2 data from Caterpillar and MSHA to help determine if engine settings were correctly adjusted for operation at high altitudes. (Perfect agreement between the mine vehicle tailpipe and laboratory measurements would not be expected because of the differences in the test conditions.) DPM concentrations for light-duty vehicles ranged from about 20 to 160 mg/m3, and one light-duty vehicle averaged near 1,000 mg/m3. DPM concentrations for heavy-duty vehicles ranged from about 55 to 200 mg/m3. Widely ranging DPM concentrations for a particular vehicle type reflect the state of maintenance, fuel rate settings and different engine loading procedures as well as differences between samples collected upstream and downstream of the waterscrubber. The calculated DPM removal efficiencies due to the water scrubber varied considerably between vehicles, ranging from 13% to 51%. Calculations indicate that, under worst-case conditions, very large reductions in DPM may be required to meet the proposed DPM PEL of 0.15 mg/m3, even on vehicles with water scrubbers. In-mine ambient air studies, which are needed to actually measure the impact of the tailpipe concentrations on the work environment and the effect of mine ventilation on the dilution of DPM were not done in this first set of tests.

In a series of Julius Kruttschnitt size-dependent breakage models, the cumulative percentage passing 1/10 of the initial size is used as a fineness indicator for scientific research and the selection of grinding equipment. However, in industrial practice, it is quite customary to use the mass percentage passing 75 μm as the indicator. In this paper, based on the energy-particle size model, quartz and calcite, two materials with distinctly different hardness, were used as test samples in a conical ball mill. At the same specific energy, the value of the cumulative percentage passing 1/10 of the initial size decreased while that of the mass percentage passing 75 μm increased with finer feed size. The experimental test values of the mass percentage passing 75 μm have a good linear relationship with the model predictions, which suggests that the particle size energy relationship of the mass percentage passing 75 μm and Ecs can be used instead of the cumulative percentage passing 1/10 of the initial size and Ecs. By building family curves, when particle size x < 300 μm, the family curve can be well fitted, and the fine particle size distribution of the whole product can be reconstructed.

This paper examines the existing mining schemes and equipment used Peculiarities of oil sands surface mining and their influence on equipment selection, utilization and mining schemes are described. Recent developments undertaken to improve mine productivity are also dealt with together with some notes on proposed measures to obtain further gains in productivity.

The ability to understand stress redistribution within a mine allows greater extraction efficiency with reduced safety concerns. Stress redistribution has been examined at the laboratory scale using ultrasonic tomography and numerical modeling using PFC3D. A data acquisition system was built to obtain tomograms as samples are loaded in uniaxial compression. Limestone samples were loaded to failure. Three-dimensional tomograms of the samples correlate to various stress distributions. The tomograms are compared to analytical and PFC3D results.

Nonfatal injuries from slips, trips, and falls (STF) that occur at surface mines can result from inadequate lighting. Mobile equipment operators are among the occupations associated with the nonfatal incidents reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). In addition, getting on/off the equipment (ingress/egress) frequently adds to the highest proportion of nonfatal incidents. Accordingly, researchers at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a field study to investigate lighting on haul trucks and wheel loaderswith regard to glare and illuminance levels recommended by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). The objective was to determine whether two light-emitting diode (LED) area luminaires—a Mr. Beams® (model MB390 Ultrabright) (area luminaire-1) and a NIOSH-developed Saturn (custom-designed for a mine roof bolter study) (area luminaire-2)—could complement a headlamp luminaire. Measured levels of visual tasks, with the headlamp alone and the area luminaires plus the headlamp, demonstrated that illuminance met or exceeded IES-recommended levels. Nevertheless, the area luminaires illuminated a much broader area, which is key to increasing hazard awareness. Discomfort and disability glare were lower with area luminaire-1 than with area luminaire-2. Differences in glare were more noticeable for newer models of haul trucks and loaders featuring updated ingress/egress system designs. This study demonstrates that commercially available luminaires, such as area luminaire-1, are capable of complementing headlamp lighting, and can thus improve a miner’s ability to detect and avoid STF hazards.

The explosion hazard presented by methane gas in coal is confronted daily in the mining industry. Research has developed several viable methods for gas control in addition to conventional dilution by ventilation. Such methods include the drilling of horizontal or cross-measure boreholes from a mine opening and vertical boreholes hydraulically stimulated in advance of mining or for gob gas drainage. The long-term production history of five gas drainage installations was studied. Three installations were completed in the Pittsburgh Coalbed: two in West Virginia and one in Pennsylvania. The remaining installations were completed in the Mary Lee Coalbed in Alabama and the Sunnyside Coalbed in Utah. The types of drainage methods utilized included horizontal and vertical boreholes. The length of production studied ranged from 860 days to 36 years. The cumulative production from the five sites was in excess of 155 Mm3, representing a significant volume of gas.

In the mining industry, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling is used extensively to simulate air flow in underground mines. CFD modeling of pollutant transport in openpit mines is relatively new. Modeling the actual pit geometry of an openpit mine and the open domain is complex. The complexity is primarily due to the faceted geometry of an openpit mine with its numerous associated sharp features. Important issues that are not considered carefully at the geometry level are generally propagated to the subsequent processes. Several challenges and pitfalls are encountered in modeling pollutant transport in openpit mines. These challenges and pitfalls are related to the geometry, meshing, boundary conditions and turbulence modeling parameterization. An appropriate mesh selection is critical. A detailed discussion of the meshing of the domain of an openpit mine is presented in this paper. The selection of an appropriate turbulence model, such as kappa-epsilon (κ-ε), large eddy simulation (LES), Reynolds stress model (RSM), etc., to obtain the best possible solution is equally significant. This paper discusses the various challenges in modeling the pollutant transport process in an openpit and some of the approaches adopted to address these challenges.

Gold mineralization at the Colosseum Mine is submicroscopic and associated with pyrite. Pyrite occurs in breccia clasts, replacing dolomite, in crackle breccia veinlets with traces of quartz, and as disseminations in two small, interconnected intrusive pipe complexes of rhyolitic felsite and breccias of felsite and wall/country rock. Breccia types grade from felsite plus wall rock of Pre-cambrian gneiss to cross-cutting breccias "of felsite, gneiss, and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that are in contact with the Precambrian gneiss terrane one-quarter mile (40Om) southwest of the Colosseum pipes. Mineable reserves are estimated to be 8 million short tons (7.3 million metric tons) at 0.074 troy ounces of gold per short ton (2.3 g/metric ton) at a cutoff of 0.03 troy ounces of gold per short ton (1.0 g/metric ton).

This paper describes the importance of mine ventilation and air conditioning in the operation of a nuclear waste repository. It discusses the impact of ventilation on determining the number and size of shafts and access drifts to and within a repository horizon. The paper also describes the need to maintain separate ventilation systems for waste emplacement and construction operations. The requirement to have filtration capabilities for exhaust air from waste emplacement areas is discussed. Because radioactive high level waste will induce high temperatures in the emplacement drifts, the ability to cool an emplacement drift for re-entry requirements is important. The paper discusses strategies to cool an emplacement drift and the possibility of using continuous airflow to control temperatures in these drifts.

In the post-World War II years, metals analysts and statisticians have tracked the demand for metals in line with changes in Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) industrial production (IP) growth rates, Williamson said. This was because the correlation between IP growth and metal demand was reasonable. "However, the correlation was exaggerated," he said. During times of expanding IP growth, metal demand increased at a faster proportional rate than IP growth. This was probably due to industry restocking in anticipation of growing demand at the start of each economic cycle. Conversely, metal demand would slacken at a greater rate than would be suggested by negative IP growth as industry destocked to reduce costs. Nonetheless, he said, a reasonable correlation could be painted between IP growth over the longer term and metal demand. "Yet, although this correlation has stood well since the last world war, it has been based on the fact that the bulk of the world&apos;s IP growth stemmed from the industrialized countries of the western world, lately including Japan," Williamson said. The so-called "developing world" had been of little consequence. The Soviet Union and other communist bloc countries were deemed to be closed, self-contained entities that, for each metal, would either be net exporters or importers, he said. These quantities would be used by analysts to calculate the overall supply/demand equation for the western world only and to deduce whether a commodity was in shortage or surplus. It is now believed that this method of projecting total world supply and demand for raw materials is outdated, Williamson said. It does not take into account the worldwide political changes that have occurred since the collapse of communism and the revitalization of China. "It is no longer appropriate to assess global balances for raw materials on the basis of three economic blocs," he said, including the western world, developing world and communist bloc. Rather, global balances need to be projected on a global basis. In this regard, since the collapse of communism and the removal of many other totalitarian regimes, capitalist forces are attempting to satisfy the expectations of the great mass of the world&apos;s poorer people, Williamson said. Such people, usually located in Asia, Africa and Latin America, have aspired to the same standard of living as people living in western Europe, North America and Japan. "Now, with free market forces at work, their aspirations will start to be met." Consequently, the demand for metals and other raw materials will now rise at a much faster rate. The production of raw materials has to keep pace with rising IP in the developed world. It will also have to keep pace with the demands associated with the rising expectations of increasing populations in the developing world, as well as from within the old communist bloc countries.

Introduction People, systems, methods, and organization make up maintenance productivity. Methods promote efficiency in operations, systems ensure consistency and continuity, and organization maintains direction and control. The common denominator in these techniques, though, is people. Management systems can be technically correct, but fail to work because management systems do not work by themselves - people make them work. Therefore, the foundation for mine maintenance productivity must begin with the people involved. Traditionally, the emphasis placed on mine maintenance, as opposed to production, is not proportional to the impact that maintenance has on a mining operation. The performance and productivity of mine maintenance substantially affects the operating costs, revenues, and profits of the mine. The mining industry has recently experienced a period of economic depression. While it has created financial problems in all segments of the industry, it has caused the industry to focus on the need for improved productivity. Mining companies that have made investments in productivity during this period will have a competitive edge during the recovery, and mine maintenance may be the best place to put that investment. Future lost production and maintenance cost problems can be avoided if mine management has the foresight to seize the opportunities that now exist. Background Technological improvements over the last 30 years have been dramatic in the industry. Before these changes, mining equipment was not very sophisticated. So maintenance needs were not very sophisticated. Maintenance people were not required to have any formal training in mechanical or electrical skills. At many mines there was no formal maintenance organization. The mechanic was a part of the section crew and received direction from the face boss. Mine maintenance was not a function, it was a task. Technological change in mining came about in response to an expanding economy and greater demand for mined products. The past 20 years brought about a change in the kind of individual needed to mine ore and coal, and an even greater change in the person needed to maintain equipment. Equipment went from mechanical and pneumatic to complicated electrical and hydraulic. Maintenance progressed from being a task to being a function. Types of Mechanics Mine maintenance workers can be grouped into three categories based on experience: mechanics with more than 20 years, five- to 10-years, and less then five years. These groupings have influenced mine maintenance productivity. The 20-plus mechanic has been the foundation of the maintenance force. He had no formal training and his skills were acquired on the job. As new equipment was introduced, he learned to repair it by trial and error. Not all of what he learned was correct. Personal initiative and conscientiousness are characteristics of this group. They have experienced the bad times and the good, and appreciate the opportunity to work. The five- to 10-year group worked with the older, more experienced mechanics to acquire maintenance skills. These mechanics came in during industry boom times, and many progressed quickly by being in the right place at the right time. Many in this group have difficulty with diagnostic trouble-shooting, and depend on changing out parts to identify problems. This group is generally more mobile and less apt to have a strong work ethic. Mechanics with about five years experience have vocational training, some formal education or basic skills training. Like the five- to 10-year group, these miners are mobile and tend to move readily to satisfy their changing needs. These two younger groups are less apt to feel any loyalty to the employer or obligation to be productive. Their attitudes and abilities reflect the influence of their general age groups, and has a definite impact on mining productivity. Past Requirements In the 1960s, the basic requirements for a maintenance supervisor was that he be a top mechanic, get along well with the men, and be a hustler and improviser. He learned the details of new equipment as repairs were needed. Oftentimes, this individual would be the only person on the property with the ability to read prints, use diagnostic testing equipment, and troubleshoot using an analytical approach. This approach to maintenance is sufficient when the equipment design is reasonably uncomplicated. Management Changes As technology progressed, organized labor gained strength, government regulation increased, and the job of supervising and managing people had to change. During the past five years, mining operations have had access to press technology for piping and joint fittings that can save owners a significant amount of time when installing or replacing pipes by eliminating the need for welding or threading. Viega, with North American headquarters in Wichita, KA, entered the mining sector in 2009, adding to its already expanding industrial sector. Since then, the company?s global engineering department has paid considerable attention to its industrial division, bringing its expertise in plumbing solutions for residential and commercial buildings to the mining and mineral extraction industry. ?We have a lot of applications in the mining industry.?We have a lot of applications in the mining industry throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico and continue to expand in the mining industry,? Tom Shields, Viega?s director for industrial accounts explained. ?Since we made the decision to increase our presence in the industrial markets, we have been aggressive and more than 240 applications have been approved by our engineering department in Germany.? Getting approval from Viega?s engineering department is no small feat. During a tour of the manufacturing facilities in Ennest and Großheringen, Germany, Mining Engineering, as well as a select few other publications and clients, were shown Viega?s manufacturing process. At the Ennest facility, hundreds of millions of fittings are produced, and each one is inspected mechanically and with a laser at the end of the production line. With four production facilities in Germany and one in the United States, Viega is able to ship to anywhere in the world. The company distributes everything from fittings to stainless steel pipe.

Introduction The grinding of coal-water slurries has received increasing industrial attention during the last decade. In particular, there is long-term interest in the use of pulverized coal-water slurries to replace oil in combustion equipment and in the development of coal gasification/liquefaction processes that require coal-water slurries as feed. More specifically, the use of coal-water slurries in gasification requires grinding a high-density slurry containing the smallest amount of water consistent with slurry pumping and spraying. As part of a fundamental engineering research support program aimed at the industrial implementation of dense coal-water slurry grinding, this author has published several papers on how specific rates of breakage vary as a function of slurry rheology (Klimpel, 1982,1982/83). These papers demonstrated that there is a consistent pattern of change in specific rates of breakage of coal in dense slurries with controlled variation in slurry rheology. By matching rheological data with laboratory grinding results, it was possible to identify directly slurry conditions that correspond to: 1) slowing down of breakage rates, 2) the occasional acceleration of breakage of some sizes, and 3) conditions where chemical additives will increase rates of breakage. In brief, these conditions were analyzed using two different criteria: a) the net production rate of material less than some specified size (e.g. kg/min of minus 325 mesh) in a standard batch laboratory mill test as a function of controlled changes in grinding conditions, and b) the use of the one-size-fraction feed method, which consists of following the disappearance of this largest size over grinding time in a batch laboratory mill to arrive at well-known specific rates of breakage (Austin et al., 1984). Detailed references to the methodology used as well as the conclusions are available (Klimpel, 1982, 1982/83) and will not be repeated here. The purpose of this paper is to further demonstrate several additional characteristics of dense coal-water slurry grinding that were shown in a simplified sense in the earlier publications of the author but which have clearly demonstrated themselves as being very important in the industrial simulation and scale-up of such coal-water grinding systems. In particular, this includes the clear and unambiguous demonstration of how the simultaneous acceleration of breakage of some size fractions and slowing down of the breakage of other size fractions is occurring as a function of changes in coal-water slurry density. In the earlier publications (e.g. Klimpel, 1982), it was shown by specially designed experiments that the addition of fine material and/or the use of a chemical thickening agent accelerated the specific rates of breakage of coals of coarser size fractions using the one-size-fraction method. There were also numerous examples given of non first-order breakage (the slowing down of coal breakage rates) using also the one-size-fraction method due to the presence of excessive amounts of fines which corresponded to the development of a rheological yield value. The problem with the simulation and scale-up of any laboratory and/or pilot-scale mill data to an industrial scale using the mechanistic modelling approach involving specific rates of breakage and breakage distribution parameters (e.g. Austin et al., 1984) is the number of assumptions involved in translating the smaller mill breakage parameters to the predicted larger mill breakage parameters. It is apparent, at least to this author, that to accurately simulate and predict larger scale equipment performance from smaller scale data (given that the larger scale data performance is known and hence predictions can be thoroughly checked) requires a better knowledge of breakage parameters than is currently available. More specifically, it was felt that one of the chief problems was the inability of the one-size-fraction method of determining breakage parameters to sufficiently represent the actual magnitude and sometimes even the directions of. the complicated interactions involved with slurry density changes in coal-water slurry grinding. Thus, a special set of experiments was conducted in a somewhat larger batch ball mill (0.457 m diam x 0.610 m length) than the 0.203-m-diam mill used in the original rheology characterization paper (Klimpel, 1982) so as to minimize any unusual effects due to wall-ball interactions (2.54-cm-diam balls used in both mills). More importantly, the measurements of specific rates of breakage were done using a proprietary tracer method on a portion of a given size fraction, which was then remixed into a natural feed size distribution before grinding. The experimental procedure and analysis of subsequent data was done in exactly the same manner as the radioactive tracer technique on coals as originally developed by Gardner (1962). The advantage of such an approach is that it makes no assumptions such as the independence of the specific rate of breakage of any size on the absolute sizes and amounts of other sizes present (both larger and smaller) in the mix of natural feed material. It will be shown that the measured rates of breakage using the direct tracer technique and the one-size fraction method on the same coal are indeed different. In fact, an accurate assessment of what is happening to the rates of breakage as a function of changing slurry density can only he made by measuring particle breakage under grinding conditions approximating the size distributions actually being produced in practice. Experiment procedures and results The pilot mill used was 44 cm diam x 60 cm long with a volume of 91,250 cm3 and was fitted with six 0.5-in. lifter bars.

The "Hormite Group" was proposed for palygorskite (attapulgite) and sepiolite for their complex magnesium silicate composition and elongate crystals (Martin-Vivaldi and Robertson, 1971). These minerals occur in close association with each other and more complex structural variations may exist (Bailey, 1972). In 1862 Savchenkov used the name palygorskite to describe a mineral from the Palygorsk locality (Hay, 1975), near the Ural Mountains. Ovecharenko and Kukovsky (1984) mention that when mountain leather deposits were prospected in the Palygorsk Division mine it was assumed this unusual mineral was a variety of asbestos. Early mineralogists used the terms "mountain cork" or "mountain leather" when referring to palygorskite. Robertson (1986) mentions that it appears palygorskite was known since Theophrastus&apos; time, ca. 314 BC. J. de Lapparent used "attapulgite" for clays from Attapulgus, GA, and Mormoiron, France, because he thought them different from palygorskite, but the two types were proved to be the same (Bailey et al., 1971). The name attapulgite is still used for the Florida and Georgia deposits when the crystal length to diameter ratio does not exceed 10:1(Merkl, 1989). Georgia palygorskite clays are of much shorter length compared to classic palygorskite. In 1847 Glocker first used the name sepiolite which was called "Meerschaum" by Werner (1788) and Hauy (1801) namedit "Ecume de Mer." Brochant (1802) described low density and white magnesium silicates adding the name Talcum Plasticum and Ecume de Mer. In the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district palygorskite (attapulgite) commonly occurs in two distinct forms referred to as short length palygorskite (Meigs Member) and long length palygorskite (Dogtown Member) (Merkl, 1989). Long length palygorskite crystals (> 10 pm) are rarely observed in the Meigs and Dogtown Members, but when present are in association with dolomite crystals. The short length form is usually less than 2 pm in length and has a low magnesium content whereas the long length form has a high magnesium content and a length greater than 2 pm. The distinctions in morphology are not only important because of the relationship to the origin of the deposits, but also in relation to activity in causing membranolytic activity related to data on palygorskite samples from 9 locations ranging from relatively inert to active in work reported by Nolan et al. (1989). The > 10 pm lengths amounted to only 51 of 17,401 fibers sized. The shortest lengths (< 0.5 pm) were relatively inert. This study pointed out that surface activity, morphology, and chemical differences may be distinctly different within the definition of palygorskite, or for that matter for any individual mineral so that health and other properties must be measured because the name alone does not necessarily indicate uniformity. Palygorskite (attapulgite) fuller&apos;s earth was first sold for drilling mud in 1941. The market for this use expanded slowly and has maintained a level of 7 to 10% of the total US production during the last few years. Most of the fuller&apos;s earth sold for drilling mud comes from the southern part of the Meigs-Attapulgus-Quincy district of Georgia and Florida. Palygorskite clays produced in this area are superior to most other fuller&apos;s earth for mud used in drilling salt formations, but because of high water loss, they are inferior to bentonite where the rocks drilled contain no saltwater. According to Oulton (1965), more than 90 different grades of fuller&apos;s earth are produced. Some of these grades are used for pharmaceuticals designed to absorb toxins, bacteria, and alkaloids; for treatment of dysentery; for purifying water and dry cleaning fluids, dry cleaning powders and granules; for the manufacture of NCR (no carbon required) multiple copy paper; for the manufacture of wallpaper; and as extenders or fillers for plastic, paint, and putty. Fuller&apos;s earth mined near Ellenton, FL, was used for making lightweight aggregates for the construction of concrete barges during World War I1 (Calver, 1957). Still other uses of fuller&apos;s earth and its suitability for uses in new products are outlined by Haden, Jr., and Schwint (1967), Haden, Jr., (1972), and Haas (1970). One special use of fuller&apos;s earth is as a carrier of platinum catalysts that are made in the United Kingdom from sepiolite clays mined in Spain. Other uses of sepiolite fuller&apos;s earth (Chambers, 1959) are similar to those of the palygorskite (attapulgite) type mined in the United States.

The electrostatic charge on spray droplets of ionic surfactant solutions and coal particles was measured and the results were correlated with the dust collection efficiency. When various surfactant were added, the magnitude of the droplet charge increased significantly and it was observed to be a function of surfactant type and concentration. The concentration of maximum droplet charge coincided with surfactant concentration where maximum collection efficiency was observed for these surfactants. Particles of coal also carried substantial amount of charge magnitude of which seemed to be a function of coal rank. Based on the results presented in this paper, it was concluded that ionic surfactant primarily act as a strong electrostatic charge inducer for droplets. Due to interactions between these highly charged droplets and naturally charged particles, the efficiency of droplet-particle collisions play a primary role when compared to the wetting and engulfment phenomenon which could only follow a successful collision. INTRODUCTION Water spray are widely used to suppress airborne dust in mine atmospheres (Walton and Woolcock, 1960; Kobrick, 1970; Hamilton, 1974; Jayaraman et al., 1986). Several investigators have considered the use of surfactants to enhance the effectiveness of water sprays especially for difficult to wet particles such as those of coal (Glanville and Wightman, 1979). The capture of dust particles by water droplets involves droplet-particle collisions, adhesion of particles to droplets, and engulfment of particles into droplets. Surfactants affect these sub processes through their influence on droplet charge, surface tension, and wetting. The last two mechanism have been thoroughly studied in recent years (Walker et al., 1952; Cohen and Rosen, 1981; Glenville and Haley, 1982; Chander et al., 1988; 1991). However, little attention has been paid to the role of electrical charge on particles and droplets on the collision and adhesion of spray droplets and dust particles. Airborne particles of dust have long been known to carry a significant amount of electrostatic charge (Hopper and Laby, 1941; Kunkel, 1948; Kunkel, 1950; Dodd, 1952; Liu et al., 1987; Kutsuwada and Nakamura, 1989). It is reasonable to assume that presence of charge on particles will effect their agglomeration and particle-droplet interactions. Polat et al., (1991) showed that virtually all freshly generated dust particles were agglomerated in air. They suggested that electrostatic charge and humidity were important factors responsible for agglomeration. Previous theoretical studies on the interactions between charged particles and collectors by Nielsen and Hill (1976) show that, the collision efficiency is a strong function of the particle charge. In addition to charge on particles, spray droplets might also carry substantial amount of charge (Chapman, 1937;1938; Blanchard, 1958; Iribarne and Mason, 1967; Jonas and Mason, 1968; Byrne, 1977; Bailey, 1988). In theoretical studies of interactions between a spherical collector and airborne particle, it was found that the collision efficiency was significantly altered depending on whether the collector and the particles were charged. If neither the collector nor the particles carried a charge, the collision occurred by inertial and gravitational forces. The collisions took place on the front part of the collector (the front capture). If either of the collector or the particles were charged, the collision was enhanced due to the induced image forces. If both the collector and the particles were charged, the collision efficiency was significantly affected by the sign of the charge as well as its magnitude. For oppositely charged collector-particle pairs a collision could take place on the rear of the collector even if the particle flied past the collector upon approach (the rear capture) (Nielsen and Hill, 1976; Wang et al., 1986; Chang et al., 1987). On the other hand, the columbic force became negligible as the particle size increased and the inertial force became dominant. The electrostatic attraction was predominant for particles of less than about 2.5 µm in diameter. For particles larger than about 8 µm the inertia of particles was sufficient to overcome the columbic force and inertial impaction became the dominant collision mechanism (Grover and Beard, 1975; Chang, 1987). Previous studies of dust suppression using charged spray droplets generated by applying high voltage to the spray nozzle showed significant improvements in collection efficiencies (USBM open file report, 1983; McCoy et al., 1985). The ldaho Cobalt Belt represents a unique geologic environment containing some of the largest known reserves of cobalt in the United States. Stratabound cobalt-copper-gold deposits formed within a sedimentary basin that was generated by the rifting of an Archean cratonic block. Host rocks for these deposits are the Early to Middle Proterozoic Yellowjacket Formation comprising a suite of clastic sediments, volcaniclastics, and mafic tuffs that accumulated in the intracratonic rift basin about 1.7 b.y. ago. Rifting was probably initiated during a regional heating and doming event that may date back to 1.8 b.y. ago. During this time, other rift basins were likely to have formed in the region. They probably represent the precursors of a much larger depositional environment having characteristics of an Atlantic- type or passive continental margin where younger formations of the Belt Supergroup were deposited. The Yellowjacket Formation has been subdivided in the Idaho Cobalt Belt into three genetic units representing various subenvironments of a deepwater clastic fan complex. A northwest- trending deep-basin structural trough accumulated fine-grained muddy sediments that were periodically interrupted by distal turbidites of the subaqueous fans. Subsequent progradation caused the deposition of coarser-grained clastics of the more proximal portions of the fan complexes. Submarine fan lobes were built across northwest-trending tectonically active basin growth faults. These in-basin structures caused a great deal of penecontemporaneous deformation within the Yellowjacket sequence. Northeast-trending fault zones formed an orthogonal set of fractures that controlled the shape and size of sub-basins, and were also an influence on lateral migration of dominantly fine-grained clastic material. The eruption of mafic tuffs at about 1.7 b.y. ago added a new component to the Yellowjacket sedimentary sequence. Around the Blackbird mine area these tuffs commonly occur either near the base or within some of the sandier sequences. Since most of the sand influxes were largely controlled by basinal tectonism, the tuffs were probably erupted during tectonically active periods of basin development. The dynamic nature of the sedimentary environment probably caused much of the tuffaceous component to be mixed with other clastics and even resedimented as volcaniclastic material. In time, the change to a higher energy sedimentation regime resulted in such a dramatic clastic dilution of the tuffs that they could not survive in the areas of the vents, and, if present, they must have been distributed elsewhere in the basin.
