Geosensing is used in oilfield drilling in conjunction with geophysical tools to support characterization of rock properties, geology, and reservoir conditions. This technology is now available to the mining industry and has been successfully applied to underground in-seam directional drilling in Australian coal mines for geologic exploration and methane drainage. The system utilizes a range of drill rig and wellhead mounted sensors which, combined with analytical software, produce real-time data from which 3D spatial features can be accurately modelled significantly in advance of mining. This innovation greatly expands on the information obtained from current in-seam directional drilling practices and provides for improved characterization of coal seams, including soft and weak zones, locations of geologic discontinuities, and analysis of formation flow. This paper provides a description of the geosensing system and the interpretation of actual data from long in-seam directionally drilled methane drainage boreholes at mines in Australia, and discusses how this system increases the value of directional drilling as an exploration tool for the coal mining sector, and the evaporite and hard-rock mining sectors where directional drilling is also applied.

In the Adriyala project, shield-leg pressure data from all shields and shearer location with time stamp from a mechanized longwall face are monitored and recorded in a surface computer. The data contain random noise due to power failure, leakage of legs, bad sensor readings, and other maintenance or geomechanical problems. An algorithm has been developed to detect mining cycle parameters such as setting and final pressures and duration of the cycle from these data for the analysis of periodic roof weighting phenomena. The intensities and persistence of periodic roof weighting are vital information for mine management to make judicious decisions on longwall operation.

Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust and the third most plentiful element in seawater. It is found in more than sixty minerals and in brines and seawater as a magnesium salt. One of the more important magnesium minerals is magnesium carbonate, MgCO3, with a theoretical maximum magnesia, MgO, content of 47.6%; this carbonate form represents the world's largest source of magnesia. The next most used sources for magnesia are magnesia-rich brines and seawater, where it occurs as magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. Other commercially important magnesium-bearing minerals are dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2, which serves the aggregate industry as well as the chemical industry; brucite, Mg(OH)2, which is used in the production of both caustic and sintered magnesia; olivine, ([MgFe]2-SiO2), which serves the refractory and heat storage industries; talc, (H2Mg3(SiO3)4), which serves several industries as a filler and as an ingredient in cosmetics; and serpentine, (H4Mg3SiO9). All these minerals are of commercial value because of the desirable characteristics given to them by magnesia and by its placement in the crystal structure. These minerals are the starting raw materials for a wide range of products. These include the production of magnesium metal, and several grades of magnesia used for the production of both sintered magnesia for refractory manufacture and lighter fired caustic magnesia, the latter is used in fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, chemicals, in the treatment of waste water including pH control, and in the removal of sulfur compounds from exhaust stacks. Magnesite is one of several major minerals possessing a dual character, i.e., non-metallic industrial mineral because of its principal end use as a calcined/dead burned raw material in non-metallic end products and magnesium metal. A large percentage of the magnesia used to produce magnesium metal comes from seawater1 brines. The total primary metal production worldwide is about 350 ktpy. This report reviews magnesite solely as an industrial non- metallic raw material. Magnesite for most refractory purposes must have a content of sintered magnesia above 85%, with a preference for those sources that have the potential for 90 to 98% magnesia values. Dolomite, used in large tonnages because of its physical properties in the construction industry, also has a use in the chemical and the refractory industry. In its calcined form, dolomite is used as a slag addition in the making of steel, and it is used in a high-purity calcine to precipitate magnesium hydroxide from brines or seawater. The precipitated magnesium hydroxide is intermediate for the production of deadburned clinker for refractories and the production of magnesium metal. In many cases the high-purity magnesium hydroxide obtained by precipitation with calcined dolomite, or in some cases limestone, has supplanted much of the world's production of magnesia from the natural mineral magnesite. This is especially true of the United States and in major industrialized areas of Europe and Japan. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for its magnesia content is magnesite (MgCO3), one of the calcite group of rhombohedra1 carbonates, which includes calcite (CaCO3), siderite (Fe2CO3), and rhodocrosite (MnCO3), among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence magnesite and siderite form a complete series, of which the mineral breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well known end member. The radii of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC03-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but it occurs when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of this relationship is that calcite and dolomite are commonly found intermixed with magnesite. They occur, commonly, as identifiable crystal entities, which can be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by benefication techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is found occasionally as transparent crystals resembling calcite. Magnesite principally contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and the silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Although the genesis of natural magnesite deposits can be complex, it is distinguished in nature in two distinct physical forms, namely crystalline, (with a wide range of visible crystal sizes) and cryptocrystalline, sometimes referred to as amorphous, where the crystal size is not detectable to the eye and will range from 1 to 10 pm. The two types not only differ in crystal structure but in the sizes of the deposits and in modes of formations. The crystalline form has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color range is from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a significant indicator of purity but in a given deposit an experienced person can often roughly grade the magnesite by observing color and crystallinity. Macrocrystalline deposits occur in relatively few, but generally large, deposits on the order of several million tons. The ore shows a marble-like crystal structure and belongs to the sedimentary or metasomatic groups of origin. The cryptocrystalline variety of magnesite frequently occurs in many small deposits, although there are exceptions. Cryptocrystalline magnesite is typically massive with no cleavage and is sometimes descriptively called bone magnesite. The fracture is usually conchoidal, with a hardness of 3.5 to 5.0. The color is mainly white, but it can have tints of yellow, orange, or buff. Accessory silaceous minerals such as serpentine, quartz, or chalcedony are usually present. Calcium minerals are normally absent or in low concentration, this contrasting with the macrocrystalline form where calcium minerals are almost invariably present and some- times in high concentration. The ability to predict the dewatering performance of an industrial hydrocyclone from a laboratory-model hydrocyclone is of great importance. In this study, laboratory-scale hydrocyclone experiments were conducted using silica sand samples at 10 percent solid concentration for dewatering with Mozley hydrocyclones with diameters of 2 in. and 4 in. The objective is to predict the design parameters for an industrial dewatering cyclone to achieve higher solid concentration in the underflow. A model was developed based on the Nageswararao hydrocyclone model with the help of a commercial simulator for a hydrocyclone operating at 100 t/h and 20 percent solid concentration to achieve 80 percent solid recovery at 45 percent solid concentration in the underflow.

The most promising near-term alternative to fuel cell driven vehicles is probably Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV or EV) technology. HEV technology combines the best characteristics of fuel-driven engines, electric motor drives, and energy storage components. It is designed with a combustion engine that functions as the primary power source, and an electric power storage system that functions as the secondary power source. The presence of the secondary power source allows designers to size the combustion engine for cruising power requirements. A new energy source for HEV or EV market will become lithium ion batteries (LIBs) in the near future. LIBs for HEV or EV has large scale about more 10,000 times than small size one for IT devices in order to achieve high electric density/capacity and high efficiency, etc. In those reasons, physical treatment of the batteries is more difficult for stable dismantling in comparison with the smaller one. Hybrid vehicle sales will grow by nearly 400 percent during the next seven years, according to a new report from analyst firm ABI Research. By 2013 hybrids will make up 6 percent of annual U.S. auto sales. The traction battery pack will become air-cooled LIBs which consists of several modules of Li ion battery and connected in series/parallel configuration to provide about >450 VDC, >150 kW peak power, and >80 Ah capacity. As the use of these batteries tends to increase significantly for the next years, it is relevant issues that development of new recycling methods as well as optimization of existing processes to treat spent LIBs for HEV have being addressed in order to obtain sustainability. In this study, physical treatment containing stable electrical discharge of spent LIBs for HEV was carried out for recovery of valuable metals from the batteries. Also In order to increase the yield of valuable metals through physical treatments such as electric discharge of spent batteries, crushing, and classification, we also focused on the recovery of cobalt from +8 mesh fraction due to its large portion in crushed intermediates.

Bigger flotation cells can result in larger froth surface areas and longer froth transport distances, this has been credited to impact froth recovery. Thanks to recent advancements, the newer flotation machines can be designed with different launder and crowder arrangements to enhance froth management. Nevertheless, lower head grades, complex ores and even larger mechanical flotation cells can lead to insufficient froth collection, even if the cell is equipped with the most recent flotation advancements like the center launder design. Aforementioned issue can become critical at the end of the flotation row. Increased crowding has been proven to be a solution to overcome inadequate froth recovery. However, scaling-up crowders for larger flotation cells can rise challenges, particularly in terms of structural limits and design for service. This paper presents the development journey for the Spider Crowder Upgrade, an advancement to improve froth collection in large flotation cells that are already equipped with center launders.

"Premature and unplanned mine closure can result in significant adverse impacts on the environment and community and need to be managed appropriately. Risk management techniques can reduce the negative impacts and risks of early mine closure. Risk Assessment 3D Model, is an efficient tool to quantify risk. The aim of this paper is to identify the mine closure risks in Choghart iron ore mine, and calculate the overall mine closure risk level. The result shows that 51.4% of assessed risks have low risk level and the overall risk level of early mine closure is low. Keywords: mine closure, risk assessment 3D model, Choghart iron ore mine INTRODUCTION The modern mining life-cycle can be divided into three main stages; exploration, mining (opening and production) and post mining (mine closure, and reclamation). Mine closure is the critical component of the modern mining life-cycle and it refers to the period of time when the operational stage of a mine has permanently ceases (Heikkinen et al, 2008). Planned closure occurs due to the depletion of ore reserves, but sometimes it is premature. Laurance (2006) shows that only 25% of mine closure in the past 30 years was due to resource depletion and in 75% of the cases the mines were closed for the other reasons. Ghanbari et al (2010) demonstrated that 48.6 % of copper mine closure in the past 100 years was due to resource depletion and 51.4 % of copper mines have been closed due to other reasons. The main reasons of premature mine closure are as follow (Laurance, 2006; Ghanbari et al, 2010; Maiti, 2013): • Economic, (low commodity prices or high costs) • Geological, (over-estimation of grade and tonnage) • Geotechnical (adverse geotechnical conditions) • Technical (equipment failure) • Regulatory, due to safety or environmental breaches • Social or community pressures • Closure of downstream industry or markets • Flooding or inrush Minaei Mobtaker and Osanloo (2013) developed a mine closure prediction model based on the data collected from closed iron ore mines in the past 100 years. They showed that economic factors, exhaustion of ore reserve and geological conditions are the main reasons of iron ore mine closure. They treated mine closure as a decision making problem in order to predict the causes of mine closure, including the uncertainties of some mine plan parameter such as iron ore price, production and consumption."

"The mining industry suffers from a number of incorrect perceptions, one of which is that it is an outdated industry that has not changed for hundreds of years. But the truth of the matter is that mining is a vibrant, highly complex industry that not only employs highly skilled and educated professionals but is also often on the cutting edge of technology. It is an industry with projects that are ever-evolving and among the most challenging engineering feats in the world.Take for instance the U.S. 53 Highway Relocation project in Virginia, MN. While more of a civil engineering job than a traditional mining project, it is still a complex engineering challenge taking place in a mining environment that has called on the skills of eight state agencies, three federal agencies, a host of contractors and many consultants, including many from the local mining industry in the Iron Range of Minnesota.In 1960, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) constructed U.S, Highway 53 on a private easement owned by US Steel that cut across a massive taconite deposit. MnDOT constructed the highway with the agreement that if the highway needed to be moved to access the taconite deposit before 1987, US Steel would foot the bill. And if the move was required after 1987, the responsibility would fall to MnDOT. The 2011 report titled ?Energy Critical Elements: Securing Materials for Emerging Technologies? by the American Physical Society?s Panel on Public Affairs and the Materials Research Society surveys potential constraints on the availability of these elements and identifies five specific areas of potential action by the United States to ensure their availability: 1) federal agency coordination; 2) information collection, analysis and dissemination; 3) research, development and workforce enhancement; 4) efficient use of materials and 5) market interventions. Energy-critical elements (ECEs) are a class of chemical elements that currently are critical to one or more new energy-related technologies. A shortage of these elements would significantly inhibit large-scale deployment, which could otherwise be capable of transforming the way in which energy is produced, transmitted, stored or conserved. The report addresses elements that have not been widely extracted, traded or used in the past, and therefore are not the focus of well-established and relatively stable markets (such as carbon in coal or uranium as fuels, copper, aluminum, nickel and iron, all of which are clearly vital in energy applications).

The Mesquite gold deposit is a recent discovery of Gold Fields Mining Corporation lying 65 kilo- meters northeast of El Centro in Imperial County, California (Figure 1). The deposit is located on the southwestern flank of the Chocolate Mountains and is a bulk-minable, low grade "disseminated" orebody. Although the host rocks of the deposit are part of a regional high-grade metamorphic terrane, abundant brittle fractures, brecciation, and open-space vein fillings indicate that Mesquite mineralization is epithermal. Faulting which postdates the hydrothermal activity has complicated the original geometry of the orebody. Alluvium effectively hides most surface expression of the mineralization, but open-pit mining is now revealing the details of Mesquite geology.

By offering savings in space and capital cost compared to ducted axial and centrifugal fan systems, horizontally mounted jet fans are commonly used worldwide to ventilate vehicular tunnels. They discharge high-velocity jets to transfer momentum to the surrounding airstream to induce longitudinal flow in the same direction as the jet. Vertically mounted jet fans installed in exhaust shafts have been successfully used to ventilate a large passenger rail overbuild in New York City. A comparison of shaft dimensions, vertical placement of the jet fans and measured shaft airflows is presented to evaluate optimum jet fan configurations. Measured shaft airflows are compared to airflows predicted by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a three-dimensional model of the overbuild.

The overburden responses in gently inclined orebody mining are different from those in horizontal orebody affected by the orebody dip angle. In particular, the mining-induced stress presents asymmetrical distribution characteristics spatially, resulting in stress concentration and large-scale pressure relief phenomenon in the surrounding rock. As a result, frequent ground pressure disasters such as roof collapse and barrier splitting occur frequently. Moreover, the ground pressure evolution law and the interaction between stopes in multistope mining are complex. The effective ground pressure control measures cannot be taken due to unclear understanding of the evolution of stress and displacement fields, justifying the investigation of the distribution and evolution of underground pressure for safe and efficient mining.

Hydrophobic particles with diameters between 1 and 3 mm are poorly recovered by conventional flotation techniques. A novel reverse flotation technique is described whereby coarse particles with surfaces rendered highly hydrophobic, repel the bubble films in a froth and thus drop through the froth under gravity, to be recovered as a sink product. Conversely, gangue or hydrophilic particles are supported by the bubble films in the froth and are therefore recovered as a floating product. Tracer tests were conducted in the cell in order to study the dynamic behaviour of solid particles in the froth. The effects of hydrophobicity, density, particle size and particle shape were investigated experimentally. The higher the hydrophobicity of the particles, the lower the recovery of particles as a floating product, while the recovery of particles as a sink product increases with an increase in particle density. Furthermore, a decrease in particle size results in an increase recovery of hydrophobic particles as a floating product. When treating particles of the same mass-to-surface-area ratio in the froth, flat particles would be recovered as a floating product in preference to cubic, disc-shaped, cylindrical and spherical particles, in that order.

This market is threatened by nuclear and other competing fuel sources and by depressed all-rail unit train rates, The first step to develop the rail-lake transportation market consists of rate adjustments and tariff changes to force tighter scheduling of mines, railroad, port and boats, and thus reduce cost. The second step provides a surge pile at the port to eliminate most of the seasonal disadvantage of rail-lake movement and reduce car detention at the port to almost zero.

Corrosion of steel roof support systems can cause potential premature failure of the support, thus adversely affecting the excavation stability and rock-related safety. An in-house corrosion test system was designed and developed to test full-length roof bolts for material performance based on tensile load capacity and strength under different corrosive conditions found underground. Initially, ASTM A615 grade 60 steel roof bolts, which are the most commonly used bolt material in the United States, were tested with and without stresses in a simulated underground coal-mining environment for approximately six months. This paper mainly discusses the test system, protocol and system shortcomings, and makes recommendations based on the observations and results.

Increased production through the plant was limited due to thickener circuit constraints. To overcome these constraints and maximize plant throughput to match grinding circuit capability, two options were considered: A. Adding 2000 TPD CIL circuit to operate in parallel with the existing CCD circuit. B. Adding a CIL circuit to treat the entire 4600 TPD while retaining some thickeners for tailings thickening. Option B was selected based on simplified plant operations, reduced operating costs, minimal capital requirements, reduced solution losses, and bullion grade improvement.
