Cyanide is a fast-acting, highly toxic substance but, at the same time, is deemed essential for sustaining life as well as our standard of living. In this manuscript, the facts about cyanide are presented beginning with a brief history and definition and ending with a discussion on cyanide alternatives. Other topics include speciation, physical characteristics, toxicity, manufacturing, cyanogenics, cyanide cycle, separation, destruction, and markets including those outside the mining industry. Emphasis, of course, is placed on gold production by leaching and how it is influenced by ore type, mineral characteristics and economics as well as its advantages and disadvantages.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is a multi-purpose urban public works project with a total cost of $3.7 billion. Currently 51 miles of TARP tunnels are completed and operational and 34 miles are under construction. The excavated TARP tunnels have been constructed in rock utilizing 29 tunnel boring machines, ranging in size from 6.5 to 35.3 feet in diameter.

In its April 1991 issue, MINING ENGINEERING published a salary survey form asking for information relating to engineering and management jobs in the minerals industry. 1038 of these forms were filled out and returned, most of them being received in the magazine's offices at SME headquarters before the end of June 1991. An SME volunteer took on the task of tabulating and analyzing data from the forms, but the press of other business interfered with this work, and publication has been delayed until this issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Appreciation is extended to SME members who took the time to fill out and return the salary survey forms, and our apologies go to MINING ENGINEERING'S readers for the delay in publication. Of the total number of forms received, more than 97% were from SME members. The geographic distribution of the respondents closely mirrored that of SME membership as a whole, about 50% being from the Society's Western Region, 19% from the Central Region, and 23% from the Eastern Region. About 8% were from outside the US. Average salaries for each of the four geographic areas ranged between $55,000 and $60,000, with the highest average in Eastern Region (Fig. 1). Respondents were asked to answer a number of questions formulated to determine if there are significant differences in salaries based on the type of organization for which they work. As indicated by Table 1, salary averages at mining companies do not vary markedly with the size of the company: • Large companies, defined as those having more than $1 billion in annual sales, accounted for just over 16% of the returns. Their average salary was $61,840 per year.

Coal preparation plant simulators are used to study flowsheet alternatives and determine product quality and quantity that can be produced under various operating conditions for individual circuits. Some simulators also provide an estimate of the cost per ton of clean coal by determining the number and size of different processing units required for a specific raw coal tonnage and by computing both capital and operating costs for individual units. However, to the authors? knowledge, none of these simulators have the ability to optimize plant performance while satisfying multiple product quality constraints and selecting the most profitable flowsheet from many alternatives. A novel coal preparation plant simulator (SIU-Sim) that maximizes the overall plant yield using a robust optimization tool and selects the best plant cleaning circuit configuration based on maximum plant profitability is presented. The simulator also identifies the best operating conditions for individual circuits of a plant to satisfy multiple quality constraints for the overall clean coal product. It uses a genetic algorithms- (GA) based technique to maximize the overall plant yield for each cleaning flowsheet alternative and uses a net present value (NPV) analysis technique to maximize plant profitability for the entire life of a new plant or the remaining life of an existing plant. The step-by-step development of the simulator along with a case study demonstrating its specific features is presented.

The Ciénega project, now under construction by Peñoles group, is located in the mountains of northwest Durango, Mexico. The gold and silver deposits are found in a 4-km (2.5mile) long system of veins. An underground operation will be built. The planned 1 kt/ d (1100 stpd) process plant will contain a countercurrent cyanide circuit for oxide ore and a flotation circuit for sulfide ore. Considerable resources have been devoted to the development of infrastructure in the isolated location, as well as for the mitigation of environmental impacts. Startup is scheduled for the third quarter of 1994. Ciénega’s ore bodies consist of quartz veins containing gold, silver, lead and zinc values. The vein thicknesses vary from 2 to 10 m (6.5 to 33 ft) with a northwest trend and nearby vertical dip. Veins are hosted in Tertiary volcanic rocks. The district has intermittently been explored since 1971 by Penoles. After the third series of diamond drilling and direct development work on vein, Peñoles decided to begin project construction.

A stochastic approach was developed and applied to the Butte, Montana Hillside abandoned mining site for modeling stormwater runoff and subsequent receiving stream loadings. This approach enabled capture and quantification of the uncertainty associated with stormwater quality data and allowed the prediction of copper and zinc concentrations in the receiving stream caused by runoff from the Butte Hillside during storm events. Runoff flows and stormwater concentrations were input to the model as probability distribution functions. Monte Carlo simulation allowed prediction of expected instream concentrations in the form of cumulative distributions functions. The modeling results allowed evaluation of current best management practices (BMPs), targeting of future BMPs, and identification of key data gaps to fill during future sampling activities. This modeling approach is considered extendable to other active and inactive mining sites. Output from a model of this type is easily understood and can be used to communicate effective stormwater management to site regulators. Furthermore, application of this modeling approach will facilitate the development and implementation of a site-specific stormwater management plan and will optimize efforts to achieve standards for compliance with stormwater discharge permits.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is the accepted method for evaluating proposed mining and other industrial projects to obtain regulatory approval and to help companies plan for responsible development. Another evaluation system becoming increasingly more common for proposed projects is the Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment (ESHIA). An ESHIA differs from an EIA for its more comprehensive and inclusive approach to evaluate potential impacts on public health, and its ecosystem services approach to assessing biodiversity impacts. An ESHIA may also be required by certain lenders for financing major projects. Conducting an ESHIA for a proposed mining development is not without its challenges, with costs, scheduling, regulatory concordance and other constraints to be considered. This paper examines some benefits and challenges of ESHIAs and summarizes lessons learned using a case study approach.

Investment in the ferrous sector between 1981 and 1985 will total about $9 billion, or 7.6% of the state budget for capital assets. The money will primarily go to complete the first stage of the Baoshan Iron and Steel complex and to increase steel production by 3 Mt* (3.3 million st) and seamless tubing by 0.5 Mt (551,000 st). Investment in 1983 will be about $3.5 billion, a 28% increase over 1981. Although data on nonferrous investment is less specific, the Chinese announced early this spring that the country's investment would be 2.6 times greater than the average spent during the previous five year plans. Geological surveying will also be stepped up. The Ministry of Geology and Minerals recently announced it will incorporate a search for metal and mineral resources into its second round of oil and gas surveys. The Sixth Five-Year Plan desig¬nates some actual production targets. Steel is to increase to more than 72 Mt (79.4 million st). The country's production of 10 priority nonferrous metals - aluminum (and bauxite), copper, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium, and titanium - is to increase 12.7%. Top priority is to develop aluminum production. Renewed efforts are to be made to develop gold and silver production and to increase rare earth and rare metal production. By April 1983 when the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. was established, some five months after publication of the Five-Year Plan, the goals for nonferrous development had already been upgraded and changed to include: • development priority status equal to that of coal's; • an increase of more than 150% in the 1985 projected production level for the 10 top nonferrous metals (a move from the Sixth Five-year Plan's production increase of 12.7% to one of 34%); and • modification of the top 10 nonferrous metals list to include tungsten, molybdenum, and rare earths. Aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc maintained primary importance, while mercury, magnesium, and titanium were deleted. It is likely that the modification will be taken one step further and titanium will be substituted for antimony. China has already indicated its intentions to stabilize rather than expand its antimony industry, while press reports play up the titanium industry's importance to the country's development. In addition, the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. announced that it expects to register a progressive annual increase of 4% in foreign currency earnings through export. China's nonferrous development efforts, therefore, appear two-pronged. First, the country's efforts will be directed toward self-sufficiency in its four major process and primary metals - aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead - and a number of other nonferrous metals that are in increasing demand by its light industry sector. At present, 96% of China's non¬ferrous consumption is composed of aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc. Substantial portions of that must be imported to meet rising demand. Second, efforts will concentrate on those metals that can be developed the fastest and are in "urgent demand" on the international market. Metals such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, and rare earths will be given freer use of foreign capital and technology to increase production levels and raise quality. Examples of some projects in the area include upgrading the country's carbide industry and developing new high speed and tool steels to meet international standards. The Galatia Mine is a dual-seam underground coal mine located in Saline County, IL. In 1984, it became the first coal mine to be permitted by the Illinois Department of Mines and Minerals to operate diesel equipment underground. And it is one of the larger underground coal mines in the nation to use diesel equipment. From the beginning, Kerr-McGee determined that diesel equipment offered the best approach to the safe and productive development and operation of the Galatia Mine. The flexibility of this equipment and its ability to promptly respond to changing conditions and mining locations made its use desirable for building this large dual-seam coal mine. The mine had a planned nominal annual capacity of 3.6 Mt/a (4 million stpy) and would employ more than 500 people. Galatia's current reserves are estimated at 231 Mt (255 million st) of recoverable coal from two seams of high-quality, high-volatile bituminous coal. The Harrisburg No. 5 seam is shipped primarily as a low-sulfur steam coal or as a metallurgical blend stock. It is also used in the pulverized coal injection (PCI) process for steel making. The Herrin No. 6 seam is a medium-sulfur coal. Annual production is shown in Fig. 1. A good indicator of a mine's success is employee productivity improvement. For many reasons - the proper use of diesel equipment, the introduction of longwalls and increased employee ex¬perience - Galatia employees have achieved a steady growth in annual productivity (Fig. 1) while maintaining an exceptional safety record.

Although trace amounts of Indium are found in many ores, commercial production of the metal has come almost exclusively from residues, flue dusts and slags generated by Zinc recovery operations. Our paper attempts to summarize the various approaches used to recover Indium from these by-products. Some comments on production and price trends are included as well as our views on future availability.

The classical approach to control rock fall and ravel in open pit mining has been to use catch benches. The width and volume of benches is most dependent on the bench height, size of loading equipment, blast damage to the face and mining regulations. This was compatible with open pit slopes of less than about 45°. As our understanding of rock mechanics and blasting control has improved over recent years, much steeper rock slopes can be developed at many open pit mines. However, narrower benches result with less rock fall capacity. The transportation industry has been very successful in using catch fences to protect highways throughout North America and Europe for years. The authors recommend that cable and ring net fences have a potential major application in open pit mining to allow steeper rock slopes with significant economic benefit. This paper outlines the application, design and operation of catch fences in surface mining for specific conditions. Typical case examples are presented.

China has made great progress in thick coal seam mining, commonly characterized by longwall top-coal caving mining and single-pass longwall mining with a large cutting height. At present, the maximum mining thickness of longwall top-coal caving reaches 20 m while that of single-pass longwall mining approaches 8.8 m. The top-coal caving–related technologies have significantly improved the mining efficiency of thick coal seams and have also made a great contribution to the centralized underground mining of coal. Thus, the number of underground coal mines is greatly reduced in China. However, due to the increase of the mining height and the changes in mining operations, the overburden movement caused by the mining of thick coal seams is more intense, and the influence scope is larger, which brings a series of new problems on ground control of longwall faces. INTRODUCTION The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounzes per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required three lift hoisting for men, materials and ore. I n addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity and temperature and ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operations. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation.

"Underground mining processes are dangerous. The design of mining equipment, which is able to cope with the hostile underground environment, is a challenge for all machine manufacturers. Presupposition for realizing the vision of SANDVIK for zero harm for working with SANDVIK equipment is the installation of the appropriate processes. Into the product engineering and product development processes of Sandvik Mining and Construction, a specific "Product Safety Process" has been integrated, where all safety related activities like identification of all life cycle hazards, risk management and safety verification / validation are planned, performed and documented. Product safety shall be „designed into" the products. Therefore, specific research activities have been started, to address the safety and health related topics for the development and for the engineering of SANDVIK mining machines."

This is the final article in a three-part series on microcomputers and application software in the mineral industry. The first article covered microcomputer terms and concepts. The second discussed exploration and mining software. This article will examine plant, administrative, and geotechnical software. Every effort has been made to be current in the latest software developments. Rapid change, however, is a fact of life in the computer world and any omission is inadvertent. Introduction Geotechnical disciplines have received considerable attention in software programming. Calculations are repetitive and the formulas needed to solve them are not extremely complicated. These programs are ideally suited to the microcomputer and the microcomputer is ideally suited to the consulting geologist or engineer, due to its low cost and reliability. In fact, the advent of the Apple (a registered trademark of Apple Computer Inc.) and, more recently, the IBM personal computer has caused an explosion of inexpensive software programs available to the microcomputing public. Another area that has benefited from computerization, although not in the same way, has been mineral beneficiation. Here, process control for start-up or phase-down operations has been used in newer plants for some time. Programs to perform various calculations are becoming more common as micros increase in number. Tappi Journal has a section with solutions to handheld-calculator and microcomputer problems. Process Modeling Most process modeling is still done only on mainframes. One such program is called ASPEN PLUS (a registered trademark of Aspen Technology), and a one-week course is recommended so the user can best use the program. This program is available through timesharing from University Computing Co. Programs to find an optimal solution using Linear Programming (LP) have been around for some time. Also, plant process simulation has been possible using simulation programs. Both simulation and LP are expensive to program and run. Although there are LP programs available for some micros, the user must be fairly knowledgeable about how to set up the problem. This is because each problem must be set up as a unique program that typically requires custom programming. There are some programs that can handle blending of mine crudes and examine economic parameters over the life of the mine. Plant Applications Areas relating to mine and plant applications with programs available for micros are maintenance, production reporting, inventory, accounting, and personnel scheduling. Maintenance Maintenance typically requires that certain jobs be performed in a particular sequence and parts be ordered with enough lead time for maintenance to take place on time. There is, therefore, a critical sequence of tasks that must be performed or the scheduled maintenance will not take place. Stillwater Mining Company is currently developing a second underground palladium and platinum mine approximately 21 km (13 miles) west of their existing Nye operation in the Bear tooth Mountains of southern Montana. Portals for the two access tunnels required at the new site were excavated in limestone talus to accommodate4.6 m (15 feet) diameter tunnel boring machines. A review of the technical design, field conditions and construction of the portals is presented.

The U.S. Geological Survey recently completed a digital coal resource assessment model of the Upper Pennsylvanian Pittsburgh coal bed which indicates that of the original 34 billion short tons [31 billion tonnes] of coal, 16 billion short tons [14 billion tonnes] remain after subtracting mined-out coal. When technical, environmental, and social restrictions are applied to the remaining Pittsburgh coal model, only12 billion short tons [11 billion tonnes] are available for mining. Our assessment models estimate that up to 0.61 billion short tons [0.55 billion tonnes], 2.7billion short tons [2.4 billion tonnes], and 8.5 billion short tons [7.7 billion tonnes] could be available for surface mining, continuous mining, and longwall mining, respectively. This analysis is an example of a second-generation regional coal availability study designed to model recoverability characteristics for all the major coal beds in the U.S.

The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. In the Preliminary Engineering stage, 30 existing tunnels were assessed and 28 were found to need clearance improvements to allow the use of double stack trains. Alternative tunnel enlargement methods were developed to achieve the desired clearance improvements, while maintaining structural integrity and minimizing disruption to train traffic. This paper summarizes the geometric and condition investigations of the existing tunnels, as well as describes the preferred methodologies to achieve the desired clearance. The clearance improvements will be implemented beginning in the summer of 2007.

INTRODUCTION Geology, the science of the earth, is the fundamental science in the construction of a tunnel. The approximate site of a tunnel is determined by its purpose. The geology of the tunnel site will determine the cost--or feasibility of a tunnel--the specific alignment to accomplish the purpose of the tunnel, the design of the tunnel (within the limits of the purpose of the tunnel), and the methods of construction. The more accurately the geology of a proposed tunnel can be depicted, the more accurately can the cost of a tunnel be estimated. The factors that should be defined for tunnel design and construction are the physical characteristics of the material in which the tunnel is to be constructed. The physical characteristics of the material are determined by the genesis of the material, and subsequent geologic processes that have affected the material. The geologic materials in which tunnels are constructed can be broadly classified as unconsolidated and consolidated. The unconsolidated materials include chiefly deposits of recent geologic time that occur near the surface. Because these deposits occur near the surface, and tunnels constructed in them will be at shallow depth, methods of physical exploration such as geophysical methods, trenching, and drilling will give more data at relatively low cost--therefore the physical exploration is generally, or should be, quite extensive--and the

The use of phosphate depressants in the cationic flotation of silica from francolite in the Florida phosphate industry is rarely practiced. The occasional use of gelatinized starch derivatives and pH adjustments to assure a slightly alkaline flotation feed slurry pH have been used in some processing plants to improve selectivity. This paper presents a preliminary laboratory comparison of several potential phosphate depressants for use with the flotation of siliceous phosphates. It was found that starch is ideal for floating fine (-35 mesh) silica from phosphate, while sodium tripolyphosphate may be the best for coarser (+35 mesh) feeds.
