Molycorp's gravity type panel-caving operation employs a system of short raises to transfer ore from the Grizzly Level to the Haulage Level. The raises have normally been developed using a conventional drill-and-blast method or a combination conventional/raiseboring method. A new method was needed that would be less labor intensive, provide a safer work environment for personnel, provide a stable raise that could be self-supporting and a method that would be cost competitive with the conventional system.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is a common water pollution problem on active and abandoned coal mine sites in the eastern United States. AMD forms when surface mining brings unweathered pyrite-containing rocks to the surface or when deep mining allows oxygen to contact buried pyritic strata. In the absence of neutralizing compounds, the drainage that results can be extremely acidic and contaminated with dissolved iron, manganese, and sulfate. Drainages with pH < 3.0 and concentrations of sulfate greater than 1,000 mg/L, iron greater than 50 mg/L, and manganese greater than 10 mg/L are common. Where water flows through alkaline materials (such as limestone) before surfacing, the drainage is less acidic and occasionally circumneutral, but it can still contain high concentrations of sulfate and metals. Current water quality standards in the United States require that mine discharges have a pH between 6 and 9, total iron concentration less than 3.0 mg/L, and manganese less than 2.0 mg/L. At thousands of active and inactive mine sites, drainage does not meet these standards and is being treated before discharge by the mining company. At thousands of other sites, which were abandoned prior to the enactment of water pollution laws or were operated by companies that have gone bankrupt, untreated AMD is polluting receiving water systems. The standard mine drainage treatment system involves the addition of a1 kal ine chemicals to the water, which raises the pH and cause metals to precipitate in a settling pond. These systems are expensive, often costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars per year for chemicals, operation, maintenance, and disposal of the metal- laden sludge. Because the drainage on many sites will likely be contaminated for decades, there is financial incentive to find alternative water treatment systems. In the last five years, many mining companies and engineering firms have experimented with the construction of wetland treatment systems. Very few of the several hundred wetland systems that have been built are performing well enough to justify total abandonment of chemical treatment. Nonetheless, systems continue to be built because the mining companies have found that wetlands can reduce their AMD treatment costs. It is also their hope that further research and development will eventually result in systems that will completely rep1 ace chemical treatment and offer long term performance at minimal cost. The Bureau of Mines has been actively involved, from a research perspective, with this approach to AMD treatment since its inception. In this paper, the status of constructed wetland technology is discussed with respect to the construction and performance of systems, chemical and biological processes that affect AMD chemistry within constructed wetlands, and the future of this technology as perceived by the Bureau of Mines. ORIGINAL OBSERVATIONS The constructed wetland concept has its roots in observations of natural Sphaqnum peat wetlands that received acid mine drainage and, instead of being adversely affected, appeared to cause an amelioration of the polluted water (Huntsman et al. 1978; Wieder and Lang 1982). These observations instigated the idea that wet1 and systems might be used for the intentional treatment of mine drainage. Because the discharge of AMD into a natural wetland is prohibited in the U.S. by several laws, it has been necessary to construct wetlands which act solely as water treatment systems. Initially, most wetland research and construction efforts mimicked the original observations by utilizing Sphaqnum moss and peat. Despite promising laboratory results (Kleinmann et al. 1983; Tarleton et al. 1984; Burris et al. 1984; Gerber et al. 1985), virtually all field tests of Sphasnum-dominated constructed wetlands failed to provide sufficient water treatment for more than several months. INTRODUCTION The occurrence of the radioactive element radium, [2gg~a], often in trace amounts, in the crust of the earth gives rise to a flux of the daughter product radon, [&apos;ii~n], across the earth-air interface. This so-called exhalation process has been studied by many investigators [KO 45, Kra 64, Pe 66, Wi 741] over several decades. In the earlier investigations the exhalation process was studied in a purely geophysical context, but over the last 20 years it has been realized, that under certain conditions the exhalation may be intense enough to also have radiological implications. This is for example the case where relatively radium-rich wastes or by-products, like uranium mill tailings and phospho-gypsum, are stored in larger quantities. In order to be able to predict the radiological impact on the environnent it is necessary to know the rate of exhalation of radon from the surface of the exhaling material. Usually the determination of these exhalation rates has been done by measurements in situ directly upon the accumulated material [~le 74, Ha 791. Although such field measurements have the obvious merit of dealing directly with the full scale problem, the results are often lacking in generality, making predictions for other situations difficult or even impossible. The present paper describes some results of an investigation where it is attempted from laboratory measurements on samples of limited size to obtain material parameters, which are suited for extrapolating and predicting the radiational behaviour of larger accumulations of the material. THEORY Let us consider a sample of a radon exhaling material enclosed in a container with a dead space volume, Vd, and initially containing radon free air. If the total exhalation rate (number of atoms per unit time) is c, the radon concentration (number of atoms per unit volume) N will initially grow with the time t according to the equation [ ] where [R] is the decay constant of radon. As the concentration (or activity) in the container grows, the net exhalation rate will slow down because of back diffusion, and, furthermore, radon atoms may be removed from the container, not only by radioactive decay, but also by diffusion leakage [JO 81 ]. If, however,only the initial. part of the activity growth curve is considered, the total exhalation rate, c, is given by [c = r•Vd(2) where r is the initial activity growth rate in the container. Let the container be cylindrical with an inner cross-section S and filled to a height L with a radon exhaling material with the specific mass p, the porosity E, the radon pore production rate f and the diffusion length i. A mathematical model is proposed as a general formulation for the analysis and simulation of once-through crushing machines. Methods are described which can be used to estimate parameters of the proposed model from experimental data, thus minimizing reliance on backcalculation. The applicability of the model is demonstrated in the analysis and simulation of laboratory and full scale double roll crushers, and with evidence given for a laboratory scale cone crusher. An extension of the model for closed circuit crushing is also described.

Mining in the Colorado Springs coal field took place from the 1880&apos;s to 1940&apos;s. The depth of mining in the coal field varied from about 10 meters to over 150 meters. Review of sequential historical aerial photographs from 1937 to 1960 indicated about 2400 chimney subsidence sinkholes had developed throughout the study area. Statistical analyses of the location and size of these sinkholes with respect to the time since mining, depth of mining, mined thickness and type of mining indicated definite trends in the time of occurrence, size, and location of these features. This data is valuable in the assessment of potential future subsidence in this and other areas of similar mining conditions.

The iron ore industry might justifiably claim to have originated the science of geophysical prospecting. Their use of geophysical methods was probably the first application of these scientific techniques to the search for economic materials although the exact origin is undoubtedly lost in the unrecorded observations of. some prospector experimenting with compasses or bits of lodestone. Since 1879 when Thalen published "On the Examination of Iron Ore Deposits by Magnetic Measurements" these methods have been a standard supplement to other prospecting techniques. However, many of the great ore bodies of the Precambrian iron ranges were not particularly suitable for geophysical work. The ores were oxidized and enriched through leaching of silica so that they were nearly non-magnetic and other physical properties which distinguished them from the wall rocks were largely destroyed. With the gradual exhaustion of these high grade direct shipping ores, and ores that could be beneficiated by simple means, the iron ore industry turned initially toward the importation of similar high grade foreign ores. At the same time, new processes for concentrating lower grade materials were being developed and older ones improved upon. These concentrates&apos; when pelletized produced such important savings in blast furnace hot metal costs that they now command a premium in the iron ore market and have weakened the competitive position of the remaining high grade ores. The ore bodies now being sought are usually unoxidized and frequently they are also metamorphosed.

The rivers cannot go to the mines but the railroads could, did, and continue to invest it new lines to reach new mines. The mining industry and the railroad industry have good reason to rely upon each other. The former Northern Pacific Railway, the Great Northern Railway, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway merged in 1970 to form the Burlington Northern Railroad, with Lou Menk as its first President. As unofficial spokesman for the industry, be had, for years, conducted a tireless effort to educate shippers, lawmakers and the general public of the single most critical problem confronting the railroad industry, the strangle bold of government regulator.]

For many years drilling and blasting has been considered more of an art than a science. This is still true in some respects, but today scientific approaches to drilling and blasting design must be used to plan an efficient operation which achieves desired fragmentation within constraints. These constraints involve minimizing damage to the wall or nearby permanent structures and avoiding undesirable fragmentation and mine dilution which can adversely affect operation costs. The degree of fragmentation by blasting is the most important single factor in any attempt to optimize the overall cost of the mining operations. The mining cycle begins with the drilling and blasting operations, which result in a given blasted rock size distribution. While this operation represents only about 20% of total mining costs, the efficiency and costs of the subsequent operations are strongly dependent on the fragment distribution obtained.

Computers are becoming increasingly valuable tools in the mining industry as a greater variety of appropriate hardware and software becomes available, combined with greater acceptance by management, Within a given time period an engineering staff can evaluate or design a project to much greater detail and higher accuracy by utilizing computers once suitable programs have been developed. We are all aware that throughout the world the decreasing grade of minerals coupled with increasing waste to ore ratios necessitate larger capacity, longer term mining operations and attendant higher capital costs. Computers can be of assistance in all stages of mineral exploitation, from geologic exploration through mine feasibility studies and design, to marketing and transportation. Because of the high speed with which data can be digested and manipulated by computers, preliminary information from any stage of investigation can be analyzed to assist in further guidance of that stage. By use of preliminary mine feasibility studies, financial forecasts and sensitivity analysis, even information from a far-removed phase such as marine transportation of the product, can help guide the exploration phase to a realistic target.

The Magnetometsic Resistivity (MMR) method is based on the measurement of the low-level, low-frequency magnetic fields associated with non-inductive current flow in the earth. The traditional resistivity method maps the electrical properties of the earth by measuring the electric field caused by galvanic current flow between a pair of current electrodes. The MMR method differs from it in that the potential electrodes are replaced by a sensitive coil or magnetometer and a component of the magnetic field due to the current flow is recorded. The presence of an inhomogeneity redistributes the current flow which results in a perturbation of the electric field and, usually, of the magnetic field. The electric field immediately above a relatively conductive inhomogeneity must, by Ohm&apos;s Law, be smaller than that expected for a uniform earth. The current density in this region is also reduced but the current density within the inhomogeneity itself is enhanced so that the horizontal component of the magnetic field measured above the inhomogeneity is usually larger than that expected for a uniform earth. A method of interpretation using the magnetic anomaly was patented by Jakoskyl in 1933 but it met with little success at that time. Part of the problem was undoubtedly with the instrumentation, and only recently have robust instruments of sufficient sensitivity been developed2 and field data of good quality obtained. There are many common configurations of the potential and current electrodes in the resistivity method. Similarly, in the MMR method one or both current electrodes may be moved with the magnetometer, either horizontally or vertically ( in a bore-hole), or the current electrodes may be maintained in fixed positions and the magnetometer alone moved. The control systems engineer is often faced with the problem of designing tests or experiments where the cost of obtaining information is expensive. This is true in aerospace as well as in process industries. In these situations the details of test design should be carefully evaluated before any test is executed so that the maximum amount of information is obtained for the effort expended. In recent years there has been a steady trend towards increased automation, In the process industries this has resulted in extensive review of process variables and, instrumentation techniques, development of more accurate system mathematical models, and extensive investments in complex control system as well as completely automated plants. When planning and developing these systems, where each measure of a process variable is usually expensive, it behooves the design engineer to give considerable thought to the details of test design before instrumentation is procured and installed so that the maximum amount of information can be obtained for the expense incurred.

Pricing for tantalum raw materials experienced explosive increases in the period 1978-1979, and-similar declines over 1980-1982. The causes for this are examined. Negative effects on the industry are highlighted. Analysis is provided of subsequent structural changes within the industry which minimize probability of future pricing excursions. Data on markets, sources of material, and outlines of concentration and extractive processes are reviewed. The conclusion is reached that expanded sources, future flat demand, and a broader international base of industry participants are principal forces in this restructure. Flat demand is reviewed as a function of increasing application of tantalum, but in more cost effective forms. This is driven by technical advance, notably in electronics applications.

INTRODUCTION This chapter outlines some general principles and procedures that a rock mechanics engineer can use to arrive at a logical design for the size, shape, and spacings of underground openings in various types of com¬petent rock formations. Rock formations can be clas¬sified into six major categories which are useful for design purposes, provided the necessary input data are available regarding the geology of the site, the physical properties of the rock, the in-situ stress field in the rock, and the general geometry of the underground openings. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed a rock classification system based upon these concepts and found it to be useful for design purposes (Obert, et al., 1960; Obert and Duvall, 1967). This classification sys¬tem is given in Table 1; however, an extra column has been added to the original classification to indicate the appropriate design techniques for each rock class. In this classification system, two main classes of rock are considered: competent rock and incompetent rock. Competent Rock Competent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geological characteristics, is capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of any structural support except that provided by unmined rock in the form of pillars and side walls, etc. Roof bolts and small random props which support only local loose rock are not considered structural supports. Competent rock is further subdivided into three ad¬ditional categories-massive, laminated, and jointed¬ which are defined as follows: Massive Rock: Massive rock is a rock formation where the spacing between mechanical defects such as joints, partings, or faults is equal to or greater than the critical dimensions of openings, or where the strength of the bond across these mechanical defects is com¬parable to the rock strength. Laminated Rock: Laminated rock is a rock forma¬tion divided by approximately parallel planes of weak¬ness into lamina whose thicknesses are small compared to critical dimensions of openings and where the bond between the lamina is weak compared to the rock strength. Elastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties will permit the use of elastic theory to predict strains and displacements from applied stresses. Inelastic Rock-This is rock whose physical proper¬ties are such that strains and displacements are a strong function of time as well as applied stress. Incompetent Rock Incompetent rock is any rock which, because of its mechanical and geologic characteristics, is not capable of sustaining underground openings without the aid of additional structural support in the form of linings, steel sets, or systems of props. This classification system for rock depends not only on the mechanical and geologic characteristics of the rock but on the size of openings and their depth be¬low the surface. For example, many competent rocks at shallow depths for small stress fields could become inelastic rock at greater depths and larger stress fields, or competent massive rock for small openings could be¬come laminated or jointed rock for larger openings. Thus, to classify rock for design purposes requires a knowledge of the geologic properties of the rock mass, the physical properties of the rock, the general size of the openings to be mined, and the average range of the in-situ stress field to be encountered. To design underground openings and structures in rock, it is necessary to use criteria of failure for rock under various stress conditions, and to use safety factors to allow for differences between laboratory and in-situ strength properties of rock and to account for errors in¬troduced by the various assumptions made in the design process. Criteria of failure based on maximum stresses have been found to give reliable results in practice. Thus, it is assumed that rock will fail in tension when the tensile stress exceeds the tensile strength of the rock as determined by a standard modulus of rupture test on samples of rock core. If the tensile stresses in rock are small, then it is assumed that the rock will fail at a value of compressive stress equal to the compressive strength of the rock as determined by standard uniaxial compres¬sive strength tests on samples of rock core. Operations and Research; from the earlier development, testing and installation of fine shear screens in the Minntac Step III concentrator to the most recent testing and operating data that has resulted in the installation of Derrick Multifeed sandwich deck screens in Minntac Steps I and II. Pilot-plant test results that were obtained at the Coleraine, Minnesota Research Laboratory are also reported and demonstrate the effects of feed rate and feed percent solids on sandwich screen performance with two sizes of Minntac fine screen feed.

Kaiser Resources Ltd. operates a coal mining complex in Southeastern British Columbia. A large surface mine, a conventional underground mine, and an innovative hydraulic underground mine are presently in operation. The products of these mines are fed to the Elkview plant. This coal has to be prepared to 9. 5% ash and 6&apos;o total moisture for export from the port of Roberts Bank near Vancouver, British Columbia to Japan at a rate of 4. 5 Mltpy. The moisture requirement for the coal product was recently increased to 8. 0% total moisture. The entire operation has been described in various publications (1), (2), (3). Details of the venture will not be repeated in this paper. In this paper we hope to describe the modifications made to the original coal preparation plant in order to satisfy market requirements for quality and quantity of coal.

Coal produced from surface mines in the Western United States is becoming a more important part of this nation&apos;s economy as other types of fuels become scarce. This paper reports the investigation of alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams. The results of this investigation are presented as the engineering-economic aspects of alternative parting handling methods involving stowing or back filling techniques. The coal and parting characteristics were selected as being representative of those under consideration or actively mined in the West. The basic philosophy of evaluation is to establish a mine-within-a-mine where equipment selected for minimal capital investment can remove the parting and second seam nearly independent of the ongoing, present production. With proper consideration of design, this parting-coal removal is evaluated as a second operation within the first and has its own profitability measure. The Fort Union Area of Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas contains large reserves of low sulfur sub-bituminous coal. In many locations, several coal seams are close to the surface and are separated by relatively thin layers of parting. The removal of overburden and the mining of the upper seam is accomplished effectively with conventional mining methods and equipment. Mining a second seam of coal and handling the parting in accord with economic and environmental controls presents a number of problems. Typically, mining companies have adapted the conventional strip mining techniques used in the East. However, the extreme thickness of the western coal seams offers alternative mining method possibilities for parting and second seam removal.

A multielement extraction system is being used successfully to provide essentially interference-free geochemical analyses to aid in gold exploration. The Methyl isobutyl ketone-Amine synerGistic Iodide Complex (MAGIC) extraction system separates Ag, As, Au, Bi, Cd, Cu, Ga, Hg, In, Mo, Pb, Pd, Pt, Sb, Se, Sn, Te, T1, and Zn from interfering geological matrices. Quantitative extraction of these elements is accomplished over a broad range of acid normality, making it possible to economically determine all 19 elements from a single digestion or leach solution. The resulting organic extracts are amenable to analysis by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS). For many years the principal shortcoming of ICP-AES was the complex spectral and stray-light interferences that were caused by the extreme variability of components such as Fe. Na, and Ca in common geological matrices. The MAGIC extraction allows determination of the extracted elements with enhanced sensitivity, from a virtually uniform matrix, by ICP-AES and FAAS. Because of its simultaneous multichannel capabilities, ICP-AES is the ideal instrumental technique for determining these 19 extracted elements. Ultratrace (sub-part-per-billion) determinations of Au and many of the other extracted elements can be made by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS), following back stripping of the extracts. The combination of the extraction followed by stripping of the organic phase eliminates 99.999% of potential interferences for Au. Gold determination by GFAAS from these extracts under the specified conditions yields a fourfold improvement in sensitivity over conventional GFAAS methods. This sensitivity enhancement and the interference-free matrix allow highly reliable determinations well into the parts-per-trillion range.

INTRODUCTION The role of comminution and related unit operations in mineral processing applications is of major importance. This is especially true in terms of operating costs, since these unit operations represent the major fraction of the overall processing costs. Due to the broad scope and the large number of unit processes and machines involved, Section 3 is divided into five subsections. In Section 3A, General Aspects of Comminution, topics covered include history, terminology, particle¬size distributions, classes of comminution machines, testing and calcu¬lation procedures, and simulation and modeling. In Section 3B, Crush¬ing. the subjects include jaw crushers, gyratory crushers, cone crushers, hammermills, and impactors. The chapters of Section 3C, Grinding, cover aspects common to tumbling mills, ball mills, rod mills, autogenous mills, pebble mills, roller mills, fluid energy mills, other types of grinding machines, and grinding costs. Section 3D, Classification, coverage includes classification theory, hydrocyclones, and mechanical classifiers, and in Section 3E, Screening, the topics presented are classes of screens, selection of vibrating screens, sieve bend screens, and screening media. About five years after the Handbook was begun, Section 3 was unfortunately without an editor or contributors for over half of the chapters. A committee was then organized to expedite completion of the section. When this committee contacted the persons who had agreed to contribute to the section, it was found that many of them wished to resign from their earlier voluntary obligation to AIME. Therefore the committee had to find new contributors for these chap¬ters in addition to other chapters in Section 3. Since there had been no previous effort to locate contributors for Air Classification, Dust Collection, and Washing and Scrubbing, it was agreed to delete these subsections. In Section 3, equipment availability, capacity, and performance data from various manufacturers and users are provided for engineer¬ing use. Selected data from existing installations are also included. The machines that are being used in comminution, classification, and screening are described in detail, and drawings, photographs, and diagrams are presented to supplement the descriptive material. The editors thank and acknowledge the generous effort of the many contributors, some of whom were called upon five or more years after the Handbook was started. It is regretted that Fred C. Bond, who was a member of the committee formed to complete this section, was deceased before the section was finished. During the time that he worked with the committee, he contributed a great deal as an author and councilor.
