The? use of hydrogen peroxide to detoxify gold mill waste waters containing cyanide and other toxic substances is already an established technology. Recent advances have extended the range of application of hydrogen peroxide treatment to include the removal of complex iron cyanides, the simultaneous removal of cyanide and toxic metals down to very low levels and treatment of barren bleeds, CIP' pulps and tailings pond discharges. Three treatment plants are described here. Each was installed at a gold mine in North America in 1987 and each illustrates a different application of hydrogen peroxide. The need for individual design of the detoxification plant to fit particular requirements is shown by the examples chosen.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION Electrostatic separation has found a number of applications since its initial installation as a processing method. Three broad types of electrostatic installations are discussed in order to provide a practical guide for three widely divergent uses of electrostatic separation. Only operating and installation data are covered in detail. A detailed technical treatment on the various types of electrostatic separation described in this paper can be found in the literature by F. S. Knoll, J. B. Taylor and J. E. Lawer.8, 9 ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION OF IRON ORE: WABDSH MINES, CANADA Introduction Electrostatic roll-type separator technology which had been in use in various forms since the 1920's evolved in the late 1940's when this separation process was developed and applied to the extraction of titanium bearing minerals from beach sands by J. H. Carpenter. Equipment design and industrial flowsheets developed for the recovery of rutile and ilmenite found new application in iron ore by chance in the year, 1956. From the time of the first beach sands plant, Carpco had developed other technology, gravity and magnetic separation to better serve the beach sands industry. It was in the fall of 1956 that an iron ore producer from the upper Michigan Peninsula sent a sample of jaspilite (fine-grained specular hematite in a jasper matrix) to Carpco's laboratory for the purpose of determining if a new high-intensity magnetic separator would be beneficial. Process Development W. P. Dyrenforth, while presenting a paper on the subject in the fall of 1957, recounts the laboratory tests. "High-intensity magnetic separators have been employed (for the beneficiation of iron ore) with some success and are still being investigated. Magnetic separation is a natural field of investigation, since iron and magnetism have been almost synonymous since ancient times. As a matter of fact, when Carpco first began investigating the possibilities of upgrading specular hematite, the first thought was in terms of magnetic separation; and the second thought was in terms of gravimetric separation. INTRODUCTION Coal is a solid, combustible mineral substance resulting from the degradation and alteration of vegetable matter largely in the absence of air. In this natural process of coalification, some non-combustible mineral matter is always associated with the combustible material. Coal preparation or cleaning is the process of removing this inert mineral matter from the coal. Preparation is highly successful in removing the large fragments of inert material, but is not very effective in removing the fine inorganic mineral matter intimately associated with the coal. Of the 600 million tons of coal produced in the United States every year, approximately one-half is produced by coal cleaning methods (1). The bulk of this tonnage is cleaned by coarse or intermediate gravity preparation methods (5 inches to 28 mesh, Tyler). Fine cleaning, say, -28 mesh, is done by shaking tables, washing cyclones, and flotation, or, until recently, the fines were either incorporated into the clean coal or simply discarded--not infrequently, the latter. In 1972, only 13 million tons of raw coal were cleaned by flotation in the United States, and from this 8.4 million tons of clean coal were produced (1). The percentage of clean coal produced by flotation in Europe (England, West Germany, Poland, U.S.S.R., etc.) is substantially higher. However, coal flotation has grown rapidly in the United States from only a few plants in 1950 to 31 in 1960 (2) and 66 in 1970 (1). Virtually all new preparation plants incorporate flotation into their basic flowsheet. In the course of the last decade, the concept of sustainability has turned from a catchword into a vision - a vision to which politics and industry feel increasingly committed. In terms of the energy industry, the key criteria for sustainable development are supply security, economic efficiency and social responsibility. Coal is able to meet all these criteria if it is produced in conformity with high safety standards through the use of modern mining technology and converted into electricity with the aid of environmentally friendly methods. Among the fossil energy resources, coal will, according to the vast majority of global energy scenarios, continue to be the most important input energy in power generation for the foreseeable future. Coal is therefore today, and will in future continue to be, an important element in ensuring sustainable energy and raw material supply, worldwide, in Europe and also in Germany.

An active underground lead mine produces water having a pH of 8.0 with 0.4 to 0.6 mg/L of Pb and 0.36 mg/L. of Zn. This water is pumped at the rate of 1.200 gpm into a five-cell, bioreactor system covering about 5 acres. The gravity flow system is composed of a settling basin followed by two anaerobic bioreactors arranged in parallel which discharge into a rock filter polishing cell that is followed by a final aeration polishing pond. The primary lead removal mechanism is sulfate reduction/sulfide precipitation. The discharge has met stringent in-stream water quality requirements since its commissioning in 19%. However, there have been startup and operational difficulties. The system was designed to last about 12 years, but estimates suggest a much longer life based on anticipated carbon consumption in the anaerobic cells.

Gas hydrates (GH) are crystalline compounds consisting of a water molecule lattice, in the cages of which suitably sized molecules, such as methane or other light hydrocarbons, are confined. Although this solid phase looks similar to common ice, it contains substantial amounts of natural gas. The necessary conditions for natural gas hydrate formation exist in some deep-sea marine environments and in permafrost regions. Despite the extensive research, which has been conducted in the fields of exploration and exploitation of natural gas hydrate deposits over the last decades, there is still great uncertainty over the estimated amount of hydrates that these reserves bear. The present work examines some key features of sediments which affect their capacity to host gas hydrates. The hydrate content of a natural hydrate formation is correlated qualitatively with factors such as temperature, effective porosity, mineralogical composition, bio-surfactants, pore pressure and compaction pressure.

The Henderson Mine is a large underground panel cave molybdenum mine located near Empire, Colorado. Diesel equipment is employed for all development work, as well as production ore handling. Due to fluctuating demand for molybdenum, production rates have varied from 16,000 to 32,000 metric tons per day (18,000 to 36,000 short tons per day) over the last four years. In order to obtain the maximum air flow for minimum power cost the Henderson mine has completed the following modifications to the ventilation system: removal of large intake fans, elimination of underground booster fans, shutdown of tunnel exhaust fans, completion of the number 5 exhaust ventilation shaft, and use of partially debladed main exhaust fans. These changes have reduced the annual cost of mine ventilation at the Henderson Mine by over 80 per cent, a very critical cost savings in today's competitive molybdenum marketplace.

Arizona, in 1966, has continued to be the site of an extensive and intensive search for metallic mineral deposits. Over fifty separate entities--companies and individuals--have been actively engaged in mineral exploration programs, both large and small, in the Basin-and-Range portion of the State. Certainly, copper has been primarily responsible for the major efforts, although associated gold, silver, and molybdenum mineralization also has been important in the economic evaluation of potential copper deposits. It is not difficult to explain why the Basin-Range portion of Arizona is receiving such attention. Part of the story, undoubtedly familiar to most, can be illustrated by reference to three graphical presentations. For example, Figure 1 shows Arizona's annual copper production for the period 1955-1965, inclusive, and it demonstrates that new records of production have been accomplished in each of the past 6 years and in 9 of the last 11 years.

Today man is taking his family back to a cave saying, "Come enter in because of what I have done". At the close of World War II Germany said if they had gone underground one year earlier with more of their operations, the war could have lasted four years longer with perhaps much of Britain devastated. The protection of the home front no longer rests with the soldier in actual combat. The battle will be won at home with the most careful kind of protection against missiles. After Nagasaki-Hiroshima Sir Winston Churchill said in substance "Up to now the Almighty has mercifully withheld from man the knowledge of these terrible weapons of destruction."

The Ortiz Mountains lie 25 mi (40 km) northeast of Albuquerque, New Mexico in Santa Fe County (Figure 1). Approximately 350,000 ounces (11,000 kgs) of gold have been produced from the Ortiz Mountains since the 1820s. The 100 square mile (260 square km) Ortiz Mine Grant was secured from the Mexican government in 1833 by Jose Francisco Ortiz for the purpose of mining gold. The Grant has remained more or less intact to the present. The mineral rights are currently owned by Ortiz Mines, Inc. of Joplin, Missouri and are leased to LAC Minerals, USA, Inc. (west half) and to Gold Fields Mining Corporation (east half).

Beginning in late 1985 and continuing through 1987, Bureau of Mines personnel investigated longwall chain pillar and entry design in two-and three-entry gate-road systems at a deep underground coal mine located in central Utah. To evaluate their respective stability characteristics, four chain pillars and two longwall panels within the two separate entry systems were instrumented with Bureau of Mines hydraulic borehole pressure cells to continuously monitor vertical and horizontal pillar and panel stresses through adjacent panel retreat. In addition, supplemental entry closure information was obtained from sites located in the vicinity of the instrumented pillars. The findings presented in this report demonstrate the practicality of evaluating mine pillar stability using in situ methods and support three significant conclusions regarding ground control aspects of the investigated two-entry system: (1) Total areal entry loading was considerably less for the two-entry system, as opposed to the three-entry system, (2) a smaller percentage of opened ground in the two-entry system contributed to a marked reduction in roof falls, and (3) lower areal loading in the two-entry system suggests improved ground conditions when mining the underlying seam.

Arsenic management practices at the Con Mine in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories have evolved over the last fifty years of operations under changing regulatory, economic and technological conditions and incentives. As a result of a processing upset in the mine' s arsenic trioxide reclamation plant circuit in August 1988, arsenic levels in the mine' s tailings pond rose from 30 to over 100 mg V. At these arsenic levels, water treatment operations were unable to meet water licence discharge criteria and the mine itself was under risk of closure due to limited water storage capacity. Under these internal pressures, the mine initiated its own research initiatives designed to restore water treatment operations. The new process developed from the mine's research, utilized the mine's existing water treatment plant hardware but introduced a pretreatment step involving a discrete sludge recycle and removal system. In February 1989, water treatment operations resumed under the new process.

This paper focus on the productivity, cost efficiency and training programmes that have enable RPM to rank as a world class operation in production efficiency and safety achievements. The first step was to commit all senior managers to implementing the NOSA Industrial Safety System based on Management by Objectives. This focused the workforce in a specific, results-driven direction which greatly promoted subsequent performance improvements. The early operations concentrated on increasing throughput via process simplification and removal of bottlenecks. Efforts were simultaneously directed to environment, health and safety as a means to improving the quality of operations. In the last two years, improvements in mining and in-tailings dam management have further improved the cost competitiveness of RPM such as to assure its future in treating the remaining CTBl ore reserves. Promissing progress is being made in developing a viable process to exploit a remaining large resource of B2 mineralisation.

The application of computers and operations research to mine planning problems has changed and progressed significantly over the last several decades with a continuing growth and increased breadth of applications being quite evident. A scan of the volume associated with the 1969 APCOM published two decades ago (Weiss, 1969) indicates that the primary applications in mining were often in the areas of short-term and long-term planning and production scheduling. The applications at that time were oriented toward underground and surface mining, but block and other mine sequencing and scheduling problems for large open pit mines were perhaps the most popular target for the operations research approach. A variety of operations research techniques were used at that time with heuristic models, mathematical programming models and simulation programs all being commonplace. The computers used were usually mainframe models which were of ten shared by accounting, engineering, planning and research groups.

In January 1992, the Office of the US Trade Representative announced that the People's Republic of China had agreed to protect US intellectual property, including computer software, sound recordings, agrichemicals and pharmaceuticals. Under the agreement, China will make significant improvements in its patent, copyright and trade-secret laws. Ambassador Carla A. Hills, the US trade representative, said "this agreement should create significant opportunities for US firms interested in marketing high valued-added products to China." Principal beneficiaries will include the agrichemical and computer industries, as well as pharmaceutical, entertainment. The agreement will safeguard these industries' intellectual property, stimulating new exports to China and helping to generate additional growth in the US. Refractory grade bauxite was included in the mineral category of the $1.5 billion of Chinese products on which the US government threatened to impose an immediate 100% trade tariff. Refractory bauxite is available from Guyana and Brazil at higher cost and in different grades. However, refractory brick manufacturers would have had little choice but to pass on the costs to their consumers. Although the United States and China are separated by political ideology and internal governing structures, this agreement recognizes the importance of a $19 billion trading relationship. Consequently, the renewal of China's most favored-nation trading status in the US congress in -June 1992 was all but assured. Many US companies doing business in China and Hong Kong have been quietly increasing their investments since 1989. These companies can now concentrate on developing sales to the domestic Chinese market. This market is expected to surpass 1.2 billion people in 1995 and approach 1.3 billion by the end of the century.

The purpose of this work is to determine the influence of sample length or size on the value of variance (Semivariogram) to select the suitable length that is required to the geostatistical computations of ore evaluation. Three cases in Ghorabi Iron Ore were studied. The first one was on the iron fraction (Fe%) at which the semivariogram gave an evidence to good continuity of the fraction in the ore. In this case, the length of sample has not important influence. The second case was for the Mn% component of the same area where the semivariogram has a nugget effect. The selected length for this case was 4 meters. The Cl% fraction of the ore was the third case where the anisotropic phenomena was appeared and the suitable length is 3 meters.

This chapter deals with the Mine Safety and Health Administrations's (MSHA] concern and obligations with regard to asbestiform minerals. Asbestiform minerals are defined as the magical group of hydrated, silicate minerals that possess a fiberlike structure capable of being woven into cloth. Their unique combination of properties, such as resistance to heat and chemical attack, high tensile strength, and flexibility was recognized centuries before Christ. Pausanias, the early Greek geographer, speaks of golden lamps, made about 430 BC, with in- combustible wicks of Carpathian flax. The Ro- mans used asbestos as cremation clothes to con- serve the ashes of deceased persons of rank. Charlemagne had an asbestos table cloth that he used to pass through fire to clean (Lanza, 19381. Early recognition of the health hazards associated with exposure to asbestos was documented in the first century by Pliny the Elder, a Roman naturalist, and Strabo, a Greek geographer. Both wrote of slaves with sickness of the lungs, whose occupation was that of weaving asbestos into cloth. This concern for the health of asbestos workers disappeared over the ages. Today, with the use of modern technology, asbestos products have been greatly exploited. The asbestos output has increased over a hundredfold in the past 70 years. World production has jumped from 454 t/y (500 stpy) in 1900 to 4.5 Mt/y (5 million stpy) in 1978. An increase in health problems for asbestos workers accompanied this increased usage. However, it was not until the modern era that the association of asbestos with chronic respiratory disease was rediscovered. Reports were published at the turn of the century documenting the effects of asbestos exposure on textile workers. One such report in 1907 by H.M. Montague Murray described the post mortem findings on a 34-year- old carding machine operator. Murray de- scribed the lungs as showing extensive diffuse pulmonary fibrosis spicules of asbestos. Subsequently, more reports of pulmonary fibrosis following inhalation of asbestos were published, including an epidemiological study of asbestos miners in 1930 (Merewether and Price, 1930), at Thetford, Que., Canada. This study took place at the mine 52 years after large-scale mining of asbestos had begun. But, the cancer- producing potential of asbestos was not established until 1949 when a report by Merewether in England described an excess of cancer of the lung and pleura [the lining of the lungs) among individuals dying from asbestosis (Merewether, 1949). In the past decade much attention has been focused on asbestosis, mesothelioma, and bronchogenic carcinoma, as the three major biological effects associated with asbestos ex- posure. Parenchymal and pleural asbestosis is a fibrosis in the substance of the lung with thickening and often calcification of the membranes lining the thoracic cavity. Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the membranes lining the thoracic or abdominal cavities, and bronchogenic carcinoma is a cancer of the lung tissue itself. These diseases occur in various degrees and combinations. The severity and occurrence of these biological effects are directly influenced by conditions such as dose response relationships, intensity of exposure, duration of exposure, lapse of time since initial exposure, and cigarette smoking. Numerous studies indicate that the relationship between these conditions and the incidence of disease is proportional. Congress has recently concluded (Congressional Record, 1979) that, "exposure to asbestos fibers has been identified as significantly in- creasing the incidence of cancer and other severe or fatal diseases such as abestosis." Congress conveys its concerns for the safety and health of the nation's miners through the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 in which it gave MSHA the authority to set safe

The midwestern area referred to is the Illinois basin. The coals presently worked are mainly the No. 5 and No. 6 coal seams which vary in thickness from five to eleven feet. Present average of the more important No. 6 id about nine feet. The coal can vary considerably in toughness within the same mine with some coal perhaps rashing very easily and other coal being extremely difficult to cut. Top is generally well laminated shales with some fortunate areas having limestone roof. There are local areas with troublesome top of poorly laminated shales, shale with slickensides and shale intermingled with small partings and traces of coal. The bottoms are generally one to three feet of clay which softens readily on exposure to moisture. The mines are dry although some water is released and collects from rapid penetration of the seam by continuous miners. However, there are locally wet areas. Most of this material refers to mines of the Freeman Coal Mining Corporation. The mining operations written about are underground mines in southern and central Illinois.

Over the past twenty-live years since large scale truck haulage in open-pit mining began, the periodic introduction of Larger capacity vehicles has provided increased productivity and reduced costs. WISEDA Ltd. has introduced a 220 ton capacity, two-axle rear dump, diesel-electric truck for the world-wide large open-pit mining industry. Design features and components selected in the development of this vehicle will be presented along with operating experience and a brief history of rear dump truck evolution.
