The use of oxygen (Goldox™) in gold leaching has emerged as a significant modification in the past nine years. The Goldox™ process was ori gi na 11 y developed by Afrox Ltd ( part of the BOC Group) and is currently used in South Africa, Australia, Canada and the United States. Although a variety of benefits have been observed with oxygen, this paper out 1 i nes the main ones with reference to Australian plant data. The case studies were categorised into the ore type: Oxide, blends and primary ore.

Sometimes in assessing where we are and where we are going it is informative to take a look at where we have been. Whether or not it adds to our understanding of the present, I think it may be interesting to review some of the past history of our industry. As a starting point I chose to use the famous Paley Commission Report, formally known as "The U. S. President's materials Policy Commission -Resources for Freedom."(l) The Paley Commission report said "Fluorspar is an essential raw material for the steel, aluminum, and chemical industries." Of course this statement is still true. It also said, "United States known reserves of fluorspar would be sufficient for some 15 years at present rates of consumption--about 426 000 short tons in 1960. Projected consumption for 1975, however, is several times as great, and reserves in other free countries do not appear adequate to supply United States deficiencies during the next 25 years." This simply demonstrates how even the most learned and competent people can observe all the facts avail-able to them at a given time and yet be unable to predict the future very accurately. We all know that reserves in other countries are more than adequate to supply the United States today, 25 years since the report was published. In fact, the report estimated free-world reserves at something over 36 million tonnes (40 million short tons). Contrast this with 246 million tonnes (271 million short tons) estimated as total world reserves from the section on fluorspar from Commodity Data Summaries of 1974, published by the Department of the Interior. (2) The Paley Report discusses other matters pertaining to fluorspar that are still of interest, such as improving mining methods. Furthermore, it certainly did a good forecasting job in noting that greater recycling should become possible in the aluminum industry in regard to fluorine lost in wastes and also concerning the substitution of fluorspar in the steel industry by other fluxing materials. It also suggested that non-fluorine containing propellants should be investigated as a replacement of those containing fluorine as a conservation matter. Some discussion was devoted to recovering the fluorine content of phosphate rock, which is being practiced today, but was in its infancy in 1950.

As the number of prime surface coal mining sites diminishes with time and with the potential for increased coal demand, areas that were previously not mined because of their difficult mining conditions, marginal economics, and controversial environmental nature, will have to be considered if surface coal mining is to continue in the future. Such sites include areas near major rivers, streams, and lakes. The name most commonly given to these areas by regulatory agencies is "wetlands". The exact definition(s) to the term "wetland" will be discussed later in this paper. Most coal operators are now more than familiar with permitting requirements under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA). The SMCRA permanent regulatory program recognizes the fact that coal mining operations will periodically encounter streams, wetlands, etc. Although discussed in various sections of the permanent program regulations, the relationship of coal mining operations to wetlands is particularly evident in the performance standards regarding hydrologic balance and protection of fish, wildlife and related environmental values.

Are the results of an exploration program worth the cost? This is a question I suspect many of you are familiar with and, theoretically at least, it is an easy question to answer. The answer, of course, lies in comparing the future earnings stream the program is expected to generate, to the present value of the cost of carrying it out. While historical costs can be determined without much difficulty, estimating the value of a future earnings stream involves all sorts of assumptions regarding future costs, metal prices, inflation rates and an appropriate discount factor; and in the context in which the question arises, requires additional assumptions about mineral deposits which have yet to be discovered. As a practical matter, this kind of approach isn't likely to produce a very convincing answer; certainly not one convincing enough to satisfy a skeptical audience; nor one likely to temper the illusions of recent converts to mineral exploration, who are convinced that if enough money is spent, profitable discoveries will inevitably follow. Within broad limits, however, I believe it is possible to analyze the costs and results of gold exploration in the U.S.A. over the past 20 odd years in a useful manner. And while such an analysis is imperfect, it will provide some insight into this fascinating subject.

Lime, the versatile chemical is, generally speaking, a calcined or burned form of limestone commonly known as quicklime, calcium oxide or, when water is added, calcium hydroxide or slaked lime. Almost 40 different lime products are available, a fact which has contributed to the rather loose use of the term lime as well as to confusion and misunderstanding. The term is frequently, albeit erroneously, used to denote almost any kind of calcareous material or finely ground form of limestone or dolomite. Lime is made from high calcium or high magnesium limestone, generally having a minimum of 97% combined carbonate content. Normally, high calcium lime has less than 5% MgO. When the lime is produced from a high magnesium limestone, the product is referred to as dolomitic lime. Calcination/Hydration Calcination, or the production of lime, has its origins in the earliest days of alchemy, with the general reaction class having been identified in an Arabic text printed in 1000 AD. It was much later, however, in the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s before this basic reaction became understood from scientific perspective. The pro- duction of lime has been so basic and simple that its underlying scientific principles have over the years received only intermittent investigation. Rather, much of the thought and inquiry has been directed toward the development of kilns. Thus, it has only been in the last 25 to 30 years that lime has received any concentrated scientific investigation relative to the thermodynamics and kinetics of the calcination and hydration reactions. Particular emphasis has been focused upon energy consumption and fuel efficiency. Calcination refers to a broad class of reactions, of which the limeflimestone reaction is just one, wherein a substance is heated to less than its melting point, resulting is a weight gain or weight loss. In the calcination of limestone to produce lime, the basic chemical reaction is as follows: [ ] While there is nearly universal agreement bout the equilibrium conditions related to the limestone/lime reaction above, there have been numerous and varied calcination models developed for the reaction. Recent investigations have resulted in the development of the model shown in [Fig. 1]. From this model it can be seen that calcination is a function of both temperature and CO, pressure. It does not, however, provide any indication of the rate at which the reaction takes place. Calcination is strongly time variant with different limestones. In a very broad sense this relates to the fact that the calcination reaction starts on the exterior surface of the limestone and then proceeds toward the center. As the calcination reaction takes place, the CO2 released at the interface must make its way through the lime to the exterior surface. Since calcination is limited by gas diffusion to the surface of the partially calcined limestone, the natural impurities in the stone, differences in crystallinity, grain boundary chemistry, density variations, and imperfections in the atomic lattice all play a significant role in calcination rate. Therefore, the suitability of a given limestone as a source material for lime production can be determined only after completion of adequate burn tests designed to evaluate the various limiting factors. When a coal-fired kiln system is considered, the entire process of calcination is made even more complex by the introduction of additional chemical constituents into the calcination environment. The reader is referred to the references for a more detailed description of the complete calcination reaction and the differences inherent between differing kiln systems. In the foregoing discussion it was noted that CO2 is released during the reaction. This release results in a 44% weight loss during the complete calcination of a high calcium limestone, or a 48% weight loss for a highly dolomitic limestone. The trade term for this weight percent loss is loss on ignition, or LOI. This weight loss is frequently used as a measure of the completeness of calcination. Because the calcination reaction is chemically reversible, quicklime or burned lime is frequently referred to a being highly reactive, or unstable. The more stable form of lime, hydrated lime, is commonly preferred and generally specified by the user. Hydrated lime is obtained by adding water to quicklime to produce a dry, fine powder. Quicklime's affinity for moisture is then satisfied, although it still retains a strong affinity for CO2.

Prolonged subzero climatic conditions impose some unique engineering problems for the developer and operator of open-pit mines in the Far North. The remoteness of the job site and the extremely cold, long, dark winters severely tax both man and machine in the quest for the Arctic's rich mineral wealth. Undoubtedly the singular most troublesome problem for the engineer is Permafrost which underlies about 201o of the land area of the world and about 85% of the state of Alaska. Permafrost has its impact on building construction and mine excavation, while posing a more pervasive threat to the-delicate ecologic balance within the Arctic wilderness. Yet the difficulties associated with mining up North may not be as overwhelming as has been previously supposed. For example, the lowest temperature recorded at Point Barrow is -560F, whereas Montana has recorded -69.7° F.. There are no specially designed machines for mining and construction in the Arctic, and efficient equipment utilization is maintained through proper operation and servicing techniques. However, neither equipment or people can be assumed to function normally at -40°F. Special techniques in drilling, blasting, and ripping are being used to yield economically competitive ores. Overall, a fundamental understanding of the nature of Permafrost will allow the engineer to deal expeditiously with an Arctic mining venture and at the same time to deal fairly with Arctic environment.

INTRODUCTION Jack Spalding in Deep Mining, Chapter 3, states: "In deep mining, to start stoping an orebody without a definite plan of operations covering the whole extraction from beginning to end is to invite serious trouble. Any stoping without plan is bound to leave, toward the end, a number of pillars, remnants, or promontories, which, as they are reduced in size, are liable to fail and cause a general collapse. The object of stope planning is so to mine an orebody that at no stage in the operation is a remnant left. Definition: `When a block of ore is stoped in such a way that eventually a small piece is left entirely surrounded by stoping, that piece is termed an island remnant.' The design of and adherence to a plan of stoping is of greater importance in preventing rock bursts than the type of ground control adopted." This, of course, is just an example of the old axiom that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And in this context, mining does not have to be very deep before poor ground conditions, made worse by lack of good planning, force a mining company to resort to more expensive methods of ore recovery. At all times when rock pressures become excessive, stoping plans must be devised to avoid the creation of pillars or promontories. This is most readily recognized when mining deep narrow ore veins by open methods. It would be a little more general to say that stoping systems should seek to avoid or minimize localized concentrations of rock stress. Ore bodies, and particularly those at Falcon¬bridge, can reach large widths and leaving pillars for extraction at a later time cannot be avoided. However, good planning can reduce the effect of factors which create bad ground conditions. The necessary ingredients of planning are time and information: time to formulate and revise ideas; information, gained in exploration and early development, to provide the fullest knowledge of the ore body. In this way, plans become meaningful. It must always be kept in mind that the long-term results of good planning often require decisions not compatible with reaching earliest full production. PLANNING FOR DEEP MINING At Falconbridge Nickel Mines ore bodies presently being found and prepared for production lie at depths in excess of 610 m (2000 ft) below surface. Current un¬derground exploration is being directed towards favor¬able locations below 914.4 and 1219.2-m (3000 and 4000-ft) depths, at most mines. The Onaping Deep ore body has been traced to a depth of 1508.8 m (4950 ft) and at Falconbridge mine the ore body is under develop¬ment below the 5000 level. Planning for more efficient ground control has therefore become an important con¬sideration of future mining. HYDRAULIC BACK FILLING AND CUT-AND-FILL STOPING The advent of hydraulic back filling has led to the increasing use of flat-back cut-and-fill stoping methods during the last ten years, until it has probably become the commonest method of mining deep ore deposits in Canada. These methods account for almost all the pro¬duction from Falconbridge Mines at this time. The ad¬vantages claimed are: safety-a minimum of open ground; very little supplementary ground support (except rockbolted backs and walls); greater selectivity and flexibility in extraction (horizontal extension of the vein, high grade ore stringers going out into the walls); and high productivity and increased mechanization in larger ore widths. There is some difference of opinion as to whether hydraulic classified tailing back fill provides any great resistance to initial closure of the stope walls. The evi¬dence available suggests that it does not. Addition of portland cement to the back fill just prior to placement has produced a material having the properties of a weak concrete. It is confidently expected that this material will assist greatly in the efficient mining of pillars and generally in giving increased ground support to oppose closure. PRINCIPLES OF STOPE PLANNING BY LONGITUDINAL FLAT-BACK CUT-AND-FILL Again quoting from Spalding: "The practice of con¬trolling output by stopping and starting stopes is bad¬stopes once started should proceed without interruption, and control must therefore be obtained by altering the rate of stoping. It is therefore necessary that faces should normally advance at a medium rate which can be boosted, if required, to give temporarily a greater output. Modern high productivity stoping methods, however, generally aim to achieve and maintain the maximum output possible from a stope. Control of tonnage and grade, therefore, becomes a more complex problem requiring very careful scheduling and organiza¬tion. With the basic method of flat-back overhand stoping using hydraulic fill, it is not usually possible to mine in such a way as to avoid creating pillars." Consider an ore body as illustrated in Fig. 1. It is 274.3 m (900 ft) high by 228.6 m (750 ft) long on strike and averages 4.6 m (15 ft) in ore width. It rep¬resents approximately 907 000 t (1,000,000 st). The ore body could be mined by advancing one long single face through all the levels from bottom to top. A total face length of 228.6 m (750 ft) would accommo¬date five 45.7-m (150-ft) stopes. See Fig. la. Each of these stopes would produce approximately 1814 t/m (2000 stpm) and the ore body would require a period of ten years for complete extraction. A possible im¬provement to this scheme might be to stagger the indi¬vidual stope faces. See Fig. 1b. Problems of hanging wall failure can be reduced by this arrangement. From the point of view of reducing travelway maintenance, it is good practice to employ a stoping system of retreat. A number of private companies and universities have developed computer programs which can be used to simulate surface coal mining by dragline. In this paper, we briefly discuss the concept of computer simulation, compare these computer programs with each other, describe the major changes required to convert these programs to an IBM computer system, and analyze their sensitivity to inaccurate input data. We also present a summary of the required data input for each program, core storage requirements, and output results. Sources for obtaining these programs and their documentation are listed at the end of the paper.

INTRODUCTION The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing water and/or ash and/or pyrite has been receiving increasing attention since the 1960's by the world-wide coal industry. Historically, coal preparation practice has involved the use of primarily gravity based separation techniques, screening, and/or water washing in removing the larger fragments of inert material from coarse raw feed coal. The preparation, handling, and cleaning of raw coal finer than 500 micrometers was deliberately avoided. Most often the fine coal that was produced would be judiciously incorporated into the bulk of the larger sized cleaned coal product or simply discarded. Since the 1960's and accelerating in the 19701s, the desirability of performing some type of coal cleaning or upgrading on the finer raw coal feed materials has been increasing. There are several apparent industrial incentives for implementing fine coal ((500 urn) processing alternatives including the gradually increasing value of the normally lost fine coal product; the additional amounts of fine coal being produced due to changes in mining techniques; the need to appropriately dewater and upgrade fine coal streams in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations on water quality. storage of fines, etc.; the increasing need to lower undesired sulfur and ash contents in some coal end-use applications; and the increasing development of speciality coal use processes that require inherently finer and cleaner coal particles such as in gasification, liquefaction, fuel injection, etc. Looking at the over 70 years of mineral oriented fine particle separation successes at the industrial level, the use of froth flotation in fine coal would also seem to be a natural process to utilize at the industrial level. In the world of strictly mineral processing technology and, more importantly in the world of mineral commodity economics, there are clearly a number of advantages to using froth flotation that are well documented and universally accepted. These include: the relatively low capital and space requirements required when compared to other process options available to upgrade minerals; the extreme flexibility inherent to the froth flotation process both with regard to throughput and differences in raw feed characteristics; the general availability of a wide range of equipment sizes and reliable suppliers of equipment; and the general availability of appropriate and relatively cheap chemicals that are the major driving forces behind mineral flotation. Just how has the implementation of froth flotation fared in coal upgrading over the last 20 years? It is towards answering this question that this paper will be oriented. As such, the discussion will be somewhat philosophical. The comments offered are based on the personal experiences of this author who has worked in the basic side of inventing new flotation chemistry and flotation analysis techniques with the major overriding goal of implementing this new technology successfully at the industrial level in both coal and mineral flotation throughout much of the world. This paper is not intended to be a complete reference to all published scientific work on the subject of industrial froth flotation of coal. As a brief background to what will be expanded upon in this paper, the author would like to offer the following summary comments: 1) the industrial practice of fine coal froth flotation is qualitatively similar but quantitatively different than industrial mineral froth flotation when viewed from either research considerations, operating viewpoints or economic evaluation criteria; 2) it is clearly possible to invent and/or develop new technology (such as new chemistry and/or equipment) that can do statistically better than current plant practice in well-controlled tests in either coal or mineral flotation circuits; 3) there is so much inherent variability to the raw feed coal streams and other operating parameters that even if there is a documented technical incentive to implement some new piece of technology, the people, instrumentation and control methodology required are often simply not available or not economic unless the potential payoff is quite large.

The US coal industry has been using continuous room-and-pillar mining (CRPM) machines for more than 30 years for longwall development. This equipment has also been used for production mining in areas that are not appropriate for longwall mining. From 1977 to 1987, the portion of annual US production mined by continuous miner (CM) sections grew slightly from 65% to 70%. Over this time, mine operators and manufacturers have made some advances to attain the full production potential of this method. This is evidenced by the fact that average tons per eight hour shift for continuous miners in the US grew from 180 t (200 st) in 1977 to 431 t (475 st) in 1987. The authors (1990) reported that the increase in productivity was due to several factors: • a drop in prices; • a more mature workforce; • union stability and incentive programs; •procedural improvements; and •technological advances. The authors estimated that about one-third of the increased production came from the first three and other unaccounted for factors and one-third each for the last two. Even though improvements were considerable, continuous miner capacity is much higher than 431 t/shift (475 st per shift). For example, the machinery is capable of mining more than 9 t (10 st) per machine for the 6.5 available hours per shift or 3.5 kt (3900 st). However, this has never been attained on development. Spectroscopic techniques are becoming increasingly popular for characterizing the interior of adsorbed layers of surfactants and polymers at solid- liquid interface as well as in the identification of com- pounds on mineral surfaces. This review encompasses the application of fluorescence and ESR spectroscopic techniques to reveal the microscopic environment of the adsorbed layers of surfactants and polymers on minerals with a special reference to the adsorption of anionic surfactants (e.g., sodium dodecyl sulfate) and polyelectrolytes (e.g., polyacrylic acid) at positively charged mineral (e.g., alumina) - water interfaces. Finally, the utility of XPS and auger techniques to identify the surface elemental composition of different mineral species has been related to their flotation efficiency.

Soda ash is the common name for sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), an alkali compound that is the 11th largest inorganic chemical in terms of production of all domestic inorganic and organic chemicals, excluding petrochemical feedstocks. Despite that most people have never heard of soda ash, it is an important industrial compound used to manufacture glass, chemicals, soaps and detergents, pulp and paper, and many other familiar consumer products. Natural alkalis have been used by mankind for thousands of years; however, their industrial manufacture dates back to only the latter half of the 18th century. Natural deposits of sodium carbonate have been known as early as about 3500 BC, when the Egyptians used natural soda ash in making glass. They also mixed lime and soda ash to make sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) that was combined with silicate minerals found in the Sinai desert. This made a soluble silica, which when added to aluminum-rich silt from the Nile River, produced a silica- aluminate cement mortar with excellent bonding properties for construction. The Romans in the first century AD also used natural soda ash in glass manufacture but expanded its use medically for the treatment of colic pains and skin eruptions, and in the making of bread. Elsewhere, people used the ashes of wood to obtain their source of alkali. People learned over time that different types of wood yielded various ashes with different properties; therefore, various plants were burned specifically for their ashes. Ash from plants grown in salt-bearing soils (such as saltwort) and from kelp and other seaweeds, especially Spanish barilla, were so different from ashes obtained from other vegetation that it became known as soda ash (due to its sodium content) versus pot ash, a potassium-based alkali ash. About 13 t of barilla ashes produced 1 t of sodium carbonate and 14 kg of iodine as a byproduct. The difference between these two ashes was relatively obscure until Duhamel Dumonceau made the distinction clear in 1736. The word soda ash developed from common usage and is perhaps more well known today than its synonym sodium carbonate. One of the primary ores of soda ash is trona, a sodium carbonate-bearing mineral that's name is traced back to Arabic origin. Trona also is known internationally by other names such as urao (Venezuela), kaum (Nigeria), natron (from Greek nitron and Latin natrium), and szekso (Hungary). The beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Western Europe in the late 18th century soon put a strain on the availability of raw materials to meet consumer demands. One of these scarce materials was soda ash. Because of the Seven Years War with England and the Napoleonic wars with other parts of Europe, France could not obtain sufficient quantities of Spanish barilla or other supplies of vegetable alkali to meet the growing demand. Efforts were needed to synthesize soda ash. In 1775, the French Academy of Sciences offered a large prize of 2,400 livres to someone who could find an inexpensive method to make soda ash. In September 1791 at St. Denis, Nicolas Leblanc (1742- 1806), a French chemist, developed such a technique using salt, sulfuric acid, coal, and limestone. The French Revolution interfered with its development, and his patent and factory were confiscated with Leblanc receiving only token compensation. Napoleon returned his factory to him; however, Leblanc was not able to raise enough capital to reopen it, and he committed suicide in 1806. A small, but not particularly successful, Leblanc plant was established in England in 1814. It was not until 1823 when the process first became commercially successful in Liverpool, England. The process was introduced in Germany in 1843 and in Austria in 1851 (Harness and Coons, 1942). Soda ash production by the Leblanc process reached its peak of about 599 500 t in 1880, after which it began to decline as the Solvay process became more popular. The Leblanc process was used to a limited extent in Europe during World War I but had disappeared by World War II. The Solvay process, also known as the ammonia-soda process, was developed by Alfred and Ernest (1 838-1922) Solvay in 1861 based on a concept by Fresnel that had been known since 1811. For the next 50 years, the implementation of the idea evaded industrial chemists because no large-scale and economic means could be found to commercialize the concept. Although Ernest Solvay was unaware of the existance of an ammonia-soda concept, he solved the problems by utilizing carbonating towers. The Solvay process produced soda ash from salt, limestone, and coke, with ammonia as a catalyst. With a capital of 136,000 francs, the first plant was built by the Solvay brothers at Couillet, Belgium, in 1863 with production commencing in 1865. Synthetic soda ash production amounted to 1.5 tpd in 1866, but reached 10 tpd by 1872. They patented their use of carbonating towers in 1872 that had made ammonia-soda manufacturing a successful continuous process. Their second plant was built in 1872 at Dombasle, France. In 1874, the first Solvay plant in England was built at Northwich by Ludwig Mond, the namesake of Brunner Mond and Co. (formerly Imperial Chemical Industries), the company that currently operates the two English Solvay plants. In the United States, William B. Cogswell in February 1879 heard a presentation on the Solvay process and sailed to Europe to meet with the Solvay brothers to seek their support for using their process in New York. At first, the brothers were not interested; however, Mr. Cogswell was persistent and ultimately gained their support. The Solvay Rocess Co. was formed Sep. 2 1, 1881, and construction began immediately on the first Solvay plant at Geddes, near Syracuse, NY. The plant came onstream Jan. 10, 1884, and produced 11 180 t in its first year of operation. In 1910, rotary calciners were installed that increased capacity to 1 000 tpd. By 1930, plant capacity was up to 2 400 tpd. The facility remained in continuous operation for more than 100 years. By 1939. 10 Solvay soda ash plants were in operation in 6 States throughout the nation. The Syracuse plant was officially closed Jan. 6, 1986, with total shutdown completed by Feb. 1986. Ironically, this facility was the first Solvay plant as well as the last. Other than the first Solvay plant beginning in 1884, the majority of US soda ash supplies during the 19th century came from imports. The remainder of the US supply

Refdist is a simple but valid approach to planning or analyzing a test-vs-control plant trial that uses accumulated plant performance data to calculate objective criteria for judging the trial outcome. Refdist calculations and results are explained and illustrated with data typical of the mining industry. Findings from a simulation study of Refdist statistical properties are reported. Suggestions for dealing with messy data situations are offered.

Section 317(e) of the Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act of 1969 directed the Secretary of the Interior to prepare standards under which all working places in a mine shall be illuminated by permissible' lighting while persons are working in such places. Section 317(e) further provides that such Working places shall be illuminated within 18 months after such standards are promulgated. In accordance with this section of the Act, there was published in the Federal Register for December 31,1970 a notice of proposed ru1emaking which prescribed the illumination to be provided in the working p1 aces of underground coal mines. In 1ight of written comments, suggestions, and objections to this proposed ru1emaking, the proposed standards were with-drawn and reproposed in the Federal Register for Wednesday, October 27, 1971. In light of further comments, suggestions, and objections, a public hearing was held on April 4, 1974 and standards were again reproposed and published in the Federal Register for April 1, 1976. Promulgation of the final lighting standards took place on October 1, 1976 which means that the underground coal mining industry must comply with face illumination requirements by April 1, 1978. As mentioned previously, the first proposed ru1emaking for illumination of underground coal mines was published in the Federal Register on October 27, 1971. In early 1972, Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) and the United States Bureau of Mines agreed to a cooperative study of underground face illumination; Conso1 felt that expertise in this field would become increasingly important. Conso1's initial efforts in illumination were aimed at investigati.ng practical lighting systems for underground face equipment. We were concerned with installing unobtrusive lights which provided sufficient face illumination for safety, but at the same time were readily maintainable, electrically reliable, and physically sheltered from damage.

Dragados USA is constructing the LA Effluent Outfall Tunnel, a 7-mile, 18 ft internal diameter effluent discharge tunnel, utilizing a 21.6 ft (6.585 m) Herrenknecht Mixshield TBM. This paper highlights the means and methods used for TBM launch from a 55 ft diameter shaft excavated in wet with diaphragm wall support of excavation. This included SEM excavation of jet grout blocks for starter and tail tunnels, temporary concrete structures and steel installations, TBM sealing system, umbilical management for TBM hydraulic, electric and bentonite circuits as well as complex segment delivery logistics. The many launching challenges were overcome thanks to the innovative approaches from the project team.

Brace yourself-what used to be a 1 billion ton deposit is now a 1 Gt deposit. And that 1520-hp ball mill is now a 1.134-MW ball mill. Beginning with this issue, all engineering units and statistics in MINING ENGINEERING will be reported in SI units. The exception to this is the Technical Papers section, where units may still be reported by dual notation. For the past four years, ME has reported all units of measurement first in SI, followed in parentheses by the equivalent English value. This metrication policy, adopted by the SME-AIME Board of Directors in September 1975, was designed to aid magazine readers through a transitional period from English unit reporting to SI unit reporting. In October 1979, the SME-AIME Publications Board completed the English-to-SI transition by requesting the editorial staff, beginning February 1980, to report exclusively in SI. The Publications Board also requested the editors to prepare a chart of SI conversions useful to ME readers; this information follows on pages 156-157. The What and Wherefore of SI In 1960 the General Conference on Weights and Measures met in Sevres, France, and recommended that a new metric system-one that could uniformly cross all international borders-be adopted to replace all other metric systems. The outcome of this recommendation was the SI system of units, an abbreviation for le Systeme International d'Unites (the International System of Units). It replaces the more familiar cgs (centimeter-gram-second) system and the m/ksA (meter-kilogram-second-Ampere) system. SI consists of seven base units, two supplementary units, and a number of derived units. Other units, called allowable units, may be used even though they are not part of SI. The seven base units are: meter (length); second (time); kilogram (mass); mole (amount of substance); kelvin (temperature); ampere (electric current); and candela (luminous intensity). The two supplementary units are radian, a measurement of plane angle, and steradian, a measurement of solid angle. Supplementary units can be used in combination with SI units, e.g., radiant intensity is expressed in W/sr, watts per steradian. Derived units are combinations of base and supplementary units. Velocity is expressed as meters per second (m/s), and acceleration as m/s'. Using the relation established by Newton's second law of motion, force is expressed as kg-m/s2, more commonly known as the newton (N). Energy (work) is force times distance, expressed as kg-m/s2 and known as the joule (J). Power is work per unit time, expressed as kg, m2/s3 and known as the watt (W). Allowable units are the exception to the rule-they are not taken from base or supplementary units but, nevertheless, are used in the SI system. Volume units are normally expressed as the cubic measure of a length, such as cm 3. But a fluid volume of a cubic decimeter (dm3) is called a liter (L); the "L" is capitalized in another special SI rule to keep the lowercase "1" from being confused with a numeric "1". Other allowable units are degrees Celsius (°C) for temperature; and the minute (min), hour (h), day (d), and year (a) for time measurements. The prefixes in the table on the following page are used with SI units to express the magnitude of a measured quantity. A mill that processes 1000 tons of ore per day would be designated a 1 kt/d mill; a mine producing 10 million tons of ore per year would be called a 10 Mt/a mine. The rule here is to use prefixes that keep the value in a convenient range from 0.1 to 1000. In other words, it would be incorrect to write 25 000 kg-the prefix should be changed to indicate 25 Mt. One of the distinct advantages of SI is that it retains the decimal relation between multiples and submultiples of the base units for each physical quantity except for time. One more rule of SI syntax-numbers are separated into groups of three with a space between each group rather than a comma, e.g., 3,839,174 becomes 3 839 174. By the same token, a decimal number is also broken by spaces, e.g. 0.738153 is written as 0.738 153.

Introduction The East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is an organization of local governments formed in 1965 to identify regional problems and to formulate policies, plans and programs to resolve them. The major goal of the Gateway Council is to improve the quality of life for the citizens of the St. Louis Region. While East-West Gateway Coordinating Council is the organization I represent and it only deals with the St. Louis Metropolitan Area, you will find one or more similar organizations in each of our nation's urbanized areas. As a result, for illustrative purposes, I will use my organization to portray what is happening nationwide. For example, in order to eliminate duplication, the Council reviews local applications for approximately 100 federally funded programs in such areas as highways, mass transit, parks, water treatment, and sewers before they can be sent to the appropriate funding agency. The Council's varied functions place it in a unique position of receiving more and more responsibility for developing strategies of implementation of various environmental regulations. This is due to the fact that environmental control is a relatively new field and we, as a country, are relatively inexperienced. The resulting regulations and guidelines will depend, to a great extent, on what the general public is willing to accept in terms of controls and what price they are willing to pay in terms of taxes and increased costs. In 2017, the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) initiated the design of the Sister Grove Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility (SGRWRRF) to provide additional treatment capacity for future population growth within the Lavon Lake watershed. To provide a discharge location for SGRWRRF approximately 4.5 miles of 2.4- meter (96-inch) internal diameter pipeline will be constructed, including 2.3-kilometer (7,800) feet and 487-meter (1,600 foot) long tunnel segments. This paper will discuss the anticipated geology of the two tunnel segments, selection of the tunnel alignment, the anticipated initial tunnel support requirements and other aspects of the project design

In order to store high-level radioactive waste underground, the German repository concept considers clay, crystalline and salt formations as suitable host rock materials (National Citizens’ Oversight Committee, 2024). The current research projects of the Chair Underground Mining Methods at TUBAF (Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg) in nuclear waste repositories mainly focus on storage within salt formations. In this scenario, the high-level radioactive waste is supposed to be packed into specifically designed containers and then transported underground and emplaced in horizontal storage drifts. The residual temperature of the radioactive waste leads to the question if there are optimization possibilities for waste handling, the storage and the long-term emplacement of such high temperature level waste. A deeper understanding of the heat transmission from the container into the host rock might lead both towards possibly shorter surface interim storage times as well as size optimization possibilities of the repository itself. TUBAF has conducted research that successfully proved that an optimized container positioning yields more favorable thermal patterns and can be achieved with conventional mining equipment.
