Though Germany has a very old mining history, her experience in uranium mining only started in the late sixties. Today in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) there are only 5 small mines in the exploration stage, namely Menzenschwand and Müllenbach in the Black Forest and Mähring, Popenreuth and GroBschloppen in northern Bavaria. In all these exploration mines much development is required to define shape and size of ore bodies. Mining engineers, government authorities and environmentalists alike are very much concerned about environmental safeguards and protection of mine workers against radon and its daughter products. Miners are affected by internal and external radioactive exposure. In general the external [f3]- and [µ] -exposures can be considered as small in comparison to the internal exposure and are therefore not discussed in this paper. The internal exposure is caused by the inhalation of radon and its daughter products and is relevant to the lung as the critical organ. The nobelgas radon is inert and does not from compounds with other elements easily. Contrary to the physical half-life of 3,8 days the biological half-life of radon is only 10 to 20 minutes. During the rentention time in the body only approximately 1 % of the long-lived decay products are retained in the system (SCHOGER, 1976). In this connection is it important that the radon resorption as well as the radon secretion varies individually and depends to a large extent on the age of the person (SCHOGER, 1960). RENOUX et al. (1978) have determined that the greatest part of the a(-activity in the air is attached to aerosoles with a diameter of 0,4/14. The radiation exposure of the lung by radon is negligible if compared with the exposure by short-lived decay products. For this reason one has introduced the concept of the potential [o](-energy (P) of the short-lived radon decay products, which means the total [ct]-energy, which is produced when an atom decays in the decay-series down to the long-lived lead-210. [ ] The unity of the potential [o]-energy concentration in the SI-system is 1 j/m3 air. In radiation protection however a specific unit is used namely the working level (WL): [ ] The WL-unit, though internationally recognised has not been introduced officially in Germany. Because of the large amount of tunneling still to be done in the FRG, the various mines departments responsible for safety and health in mining ask searching questions such as: - What are the laws governing radon emanation in tunneling? - Can workers be adeguately protected against radiation hazards? - How should one drive through high grade uranium ore? - What happens if the ventilation system breaks down?

"By the end of the 1950s, the German hard coal mining industry produced 150 million tons of hard coal per year in 170 collieries with 600,000 employees. At that time, 70% of the primary energy demand of the Federal Republic of Germany was covered by domestic coal. However, due to coal mining becoming an increasingly globalized business and the oil and gas industry producing with lower costs, the German domestic hard coal industry stood constantly under restructur-ing pressure. The industry declined until the end of its life cycle. In 2007, a political understanding was arranged to phase out German hard coal mining in a socially acceptable manner by the end of 2018. This decision required a new strategy for the coal mining industry. Being strictly finalized, the German hard coal mining industry has to be prepared for the post-mining era. To create a sustainable development strategy, the long-term impacts of coal mining activities in Germany concerning the environmental, economic and social dimensions will be analyzed systematically and forward-looking. The regional and social responsibility during the closing process and for the post-mining era will be emphasized. High technical standards in environmental protec-tion and post-mining technologies, as well as long term experiences in the development of former mine sites to create new jobs are significant from an international point of view. The traditionally constructive social partnership between employers, union, and employees has enabled long-term stable adaption processes and avoided social friction. The sustainability strategy of the German hard coal mining industry can be regarded as a role model for other mining countries and regions facing similar transition challenges. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining is a finite business that reaches its end if the deposits are depleted or the raw materials can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way. However, the impact of mining is po-tentially an infinite one – at least if you measure it at a human time scale. Mining always means interfering with geological and ecological structures that cannot be reversed to their original condition. In general, the mining cycle (Figure 1) can be divided into three phases: 1. The exploration phase, in which the deposit is investigated to determine its technical and economic profitability. The period of these undertakings is relatively short and can lead to the launch of mining operations. 2. What follows is the actual mining phase which usually lasts for a long time and ends latest when all deposits are fully depleted. This lifespan may be shortened if the economic conditions (production cost or market price) deteriorate. Nevertheless, mining may be resumed if those conditions become favorable once more (examples are silver mining in Germany or rare earths mining in the USA). 3. The longest phase, however, is the post-mining phase as the human interference into geology and nature is usually inten-sive and irreversible. Mining can lead to consequences which have a permanently adverse impact on people and the environment; therefore, they have to be managed as best we can (1)."

For our company, S&B Industrial Minerals S.A., restoration of areas which were mined and the effort for bringing up again a balance of nature is an important priority over the last 3 decades. The successful qualitative results of restoration works have delivered to nature over 1.700.000 m2 of surface after mining activity. Our fundamental method in order to achieve the best results for restoration of mined areas is the use of local plants (bush or tree type). Grass and herbs are installed by using the method of hydroseeding. Small trees and bushes are produced and they grow up at our fully owned Milos nursery and they are installed during winter when weather conditions are suitable. During the initial stages of restoration activities a great amount of surfaces, adequately shaped, are delivered by the mining department covered with top soil. These surfaces are suitable not only for the local nature community but also for a combination between natural and agricultural environment. The above fact was a great chance to create small horizontal agricultural cultivations as pilots inside the restored areas. At the beginning the agricultural items that could potentially be installed in these pilot areas were studied and examined analytically. The following agricultural items were finally qualified to be furthermore researched: 1) Vineyard (Vitis vinifera ) 2) Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica) 3) Jojoba (Simmonsia chinensis) 4) Olive tree (Olea europea)

Although many notable scientific investigations relating to roof control have been made, roof control still must be considered one of the more baffling problems confronting the miner. Each year contributions are made to our understanding and techniques in dealing with various single phases of the overall problem, however, an equation considering all the variables involved in roof control, if formulated, would indeed be hopelessly complex. Among the factors to be considered is first, gravity which is always acting but which is sometimes less of a problem than lateral forces. There are lateral forces due to expansion, resulting from the weight of overlying rock; to these must be added lateral stresses of orogenic or tectonic orgin, which may be enormous. Stresses due to plastic flow of beds, water pressure, gas pressure, expansion due to absorption of water, faults, joints, fractures, pot heads, and the like may complicate the solution. Therefore, we must base decisions on roof control, and roof bolting in particular, largely on experience, and far too often on few "knowns" and many "unknowns", The development of "in situ" roof trusses may prove of benefit because, they unlike roof bolting, promise positive calculable roof support. These trusses require installation of steel tensioned rods in the roof, which rods are arranged to produce a stress pattern similar to a bridge truss, the roof rock acting to transmit the compression forces. The simplest form of truss (see figure 1) consists merely of two steel rods anchored at the back of holes drilled at an angle of approximately 45° over the pillars, collared near the the middle of the room, the lower ends of the rods being connected together by tierods and turnbuckles. Used in this way, a 3/4" diameter rod can offer greater support than a 10" x 5-3/4" wide flange steel beam. By tightening the turnbuckle, uplist on the roof can be produced,, the downward reaction being transmitted to the pillars by the rods. This simplest form of truss has been used in rooms up to 24' in width. Trusses of four panels, that is, consisting of a truss within a truss, as shown in figure 2, have been used successfully in rooms 30' wide. (figs 2 & 3) It appears a 6 panel truss could be used in a 40, wide room.

Surface subsidence process due to underground coal mining often has the potential to cause problems to buried pipelines. In this paper, a technique for assessing the stress level on a subsidence-affected pipeline is introduced. The main contributors for the stresses on the pipelines are identified. Mitigation techniques for reducing the stress on the pipeline have been proposed and successfully tested.

Applications related to accounting, inventory control, preventive maintenance, equipment scheduling, etc. have not been covered.

The intimate association of iron formation and massive sulfide deposits has been documented by many investigators (McAllister, 1960; Hutchinson, 1972). In a classic example of such an association four distinct facies (oxide, carbonate, silicate, and sulfide) were identified in an Algoma type iron formation occurring in Paleozoic rocks, but exhibiting physical features (banding) and chemical composition (SiO2 + A1203 + Fe2O3) typical of Precambrian iron formations. The geochemical variation of the iron formation was studied by analyzing 62 samples for Si, Al, Fe, P, S, and CO2. Following a model proposed by James (1954), the geochemical and mineralogical variation of the iron formation can be used as an excellent tool for the exploration of massive sulfide deposits.

The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel (PTST) project is a part of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge- Tunnel (CBBT) complex. The project involves the construction of a two-lane bored tunnel under the Thimble Shoal Channel between Portal Island #1 (the southernmost island) and Portal Island #2. The new PTST will be the rst transportation tunnel constructed in the Mid-Atlantic region by a tunnel boring machine (TBM). This paper describes the design and construction of the tunnel approach structure in an open marine environment with the strategies employed to overcome the various construction challenges. The project is unique since the entire tunnel approach structure is built on a very limited area within an open marine environment without any reclamation of the existing island.

Potential users must evaluate the combustion properties of these fuels to determine equipment and operating changes required for their use. Most work to date has been done with boiler applications. However, many potential non-boiler applications exist in the metals and minerals industry. These applications require specific evaluations appropriate for the processes involved.

Gate-road yield pillars are subject to increases in stress as the longwall face advances toward the pillars. Abutment loading conditions are important to gate-road layout and support design in longwall mining systems. Ground support systems are often designed based on mine experience [1,2]. Convergence monitoring is one method of ground support monitoring that can be used to infer increases in pillar stress. Convergence of a yield pillar was measured regularly over the course of six months as the longwall face approached and passed the pillar. Measurements were collected at eight locations surrounding the pillar. The convergence measurements contribute to the knowledge of when yield pillar abutment loading, caused by the encroaching longwall, is first detected. Knowing when abutment loading begins to yield the pillars can help define when standing secondary roof supports are required for head-gate entry access for specific geologic and mining conditions.

INTRODUCTION The passage of Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA/Superfund) as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and state laws, have placed added regulatory pressures on the mining industry. These laws which focus on the regulation of hazardous substances and wastes for the protection of the public health and welfare and the environment, present the potential for tremendous financial impacts and liabilities on existing mine operators and owners and/or potential mine operators/owners. This paper takes a brief look at these laws and presents an environmental audit procedure to identify environmental liabilities prior to mine land transactions. The environmental audit approach presented is an overview of the procedures that could be used to document, evaluate and inventory existing and/or potential environmental concerns. This audit procedure can be applied to developed or undeveloped properties and at active or inactive mining sites. REGULATORY OVERVIEW Mining environmental liabilities have been addressed in RCRA, Superfund, the Clean Air Act (CAA) and the Clean Water Act (CWA). Even though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that mining wastes will be treated as solid wastes under RCRA and not as hazardous wastes, these wastes could still bring about a great deal of financial liability under Superfund. The catch is if the mine wastes generated contain hazardous substances such as the heavy metals arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, thallium, zinc and others as well as cyanide. Thus, it is not only important for a mine operator/owner or a potential mine operator/owner to know if the mine wastes generated are hazardous, but it is important to know if the wastes contain hazardous substances. Following is a brief overview of RCRA and Superfund and their potential implications. RCRA RCRA, which provides the basis for the regulation of solid and hazardous wastes, is applicable to active mining and milling sites. Within RCRA the definition of a hazardous waste is provided. This definition applies to owners and operators of mining and milling sites if the operator has stored, disposed or treated hazardous wastes on-site. If this is the case and if strict process control and waste management activities are not adhered to, environmental liabilities may be associated with the site. Superfund The 1980 Superfund law can be applicable to inactive mining sites or to inactive sections of an active facility. The provisions of Superfund call for the regulation of hazardous wastes and hazardous sub- stances disposal and release not only by the existing owner, but also for any previous owner. This concept of joint and several liability means that one party, as among many, can be held totally responsible for the costs of hazardous waste cleanup (Haller, 1987). Furthermore, liabilities under Superfund have also been applied back to past acts; thus, several mining properties, active or inactive prior to the 1980 Superfund law, are at risk of being placed on the EPA's National Priority List (NPL) for cleanup. Last years amendments to Superfund, known as the Superfund Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), provided some significant developments for the mining industry. The major requirement of the amendments as it pertains to owners or operators of mining sites is that the EPA must revise its present Hazard Ranking System (HRS). This is important be- cause in most cases the primary reason for several mining sites having been included on the NPL was due to the large volume of wastes generated. As is typical at most mining sites, large volumes of low toxicity wastes are generated and the current HRS model prejudices against this. It should be noted that this provision only applies to sites that are not already on the NPL or have not been proposed for inclusion on the list.

Vermiculite is the mineralogical name generally applied to a group of hydrated, trioctahedral ferromagnesian aluminum platty or micaceous silicate minerals. In microscopic particles the mineral as mineral is differentiated from montmorillonite by a higher Si:AI ratio of approximately 3:l and a higher layer charge and higher cation exchange capacities. Commercial vermiculite, the vermiculite which is mined, beneficiated, and discussed in this chapter, is an important industrial mineral which is formed by the alteration of macroscopic particles of biotite and iron-bearing phlogopite. In natural form it has the size and shape of mica, while possessing the ion exchangeable properties of zeolites and some clays. Within the internal structure of vermiculite lie water molecules, which when rapidly heated to high temperature, transform into steam causing the vermiculite particles to increase in volume. This process of thermal exfoliation produces a lightweight product which finds use in various construction products, agriculture, horticulture, and other industrial applications. In exfoliated form it has the low density and biological inertness of expanded perlite, while maintaining a chemically active surface. Most of the uses of vermiculite are for the thermally exfoliated material. In addition, the cation exchange potential of vermiculite and its layer-silicate structure are properties which can be used as the basis for numerous products including intumescent coatings and gaskets, inorganic films, and the treatment of nuclear and other toxic waste. When chemically and physically modified, it possesses some properties common to organoclays and synthetic compounds. In high purity concentrates and manufactured products, these properties can be altered and optimized in applications to produce superior performance. GEOLOGY Mineralogy Vermiculite was first described as a mineral by Thomas H. Webb in 1824. Webb believed vermiculite to be a variety of talc and described its diagnostic property of thermal exfoliation thusly: "If subjected to the flame of a blowpipe, or that of a common lamp, it expands and shoots out into a variety of fanciful forms, resembling most generally small worms having the vermicular motion exact." Observing that with one exception, all commercial vermiculite has formed by the alteration of iron-bearing phlogopite, a simple definition of vermiculite might be the alteration product of trioctahedral micas, macroscopic particles of which display marked exfoliation when heated rapidly to temperatures above 374°C (the critical temperature of water). The first vermiculite described was found near Worcester, MA, but it was later pointed out by Brush (1866) that vermiculite had been known for some time in Japan as a children's novelty. Because the techniques for mineral analysis were somewhat primitive com- pared to those routinely available today, and because the structure and crystal chemistry of the micas and related minerals were not widely understood, the early literature generated at least 20 "new" minerals which were nothing more than variations in the color and chemistry displayed by vermiculite. Trade names such as Dugarlite, Mandolitem, Strong-LiteTM, and Zonolitem are sometimes used to denote commercial vermiculite, thermally exfoliated vermiculite and their products. Vermiculite particles resemble mica and vary in color from colorless through tan and green to black, depending on the chemical composition. Most physical and optical properties are close to those of biotite, with perfect basal cleavage, hardness between 1.5 and 2.5 Mohs, and specific gravity between 2.2 to 2.8. Fine-sized particles will feel talcose, especially when wet. However, for commercial vermiculite the diagnostic test is that of thermal exfoliation. Vermiculite can display a wide range of compositions, depending on the composition of the original mica and the change of chemistry during weathering and ion exchange. Chemical data for some commercial vermiculites are given in [Table 1]. There are numerous analyses for vermiculite given in the literature, and the analyses of vermiculites from commercial deposits will fall within the range indicated by the average analysis in the table. Many analyses separate the adsorbed water (H2OP) from crystalline water and water as hydroxyl (H20+). The basis of separation of adsorbed water is generally considered to be 100°C. However, hydrate water within the vermiculite interlayer begins to be lost at 75°C and lower. Therefore, measured water content and loss on ignition are combined in the table as H20[total].

Problems encountered in barite flotation from various waste materials such as spent drilling muds are likely to be closely connected with the effect of chemical additives and metal ions present either added or present as contaminants, on the flotation. Fuerstenau and Palmer (1976) have studied in detail the adsorption of multivalent cations onto oxide and silicate minerals. It was observed that the adsorption of a multivalent metal species exhibits a sharp pH dependence which is related to the formation of hydroxy complexes of the metal ions in solution. Investigations on the recovery of barite from tailings ponds and mining wastes (Sullivan and Lamot, 1981) have shown that such barite materials can contain large quantities of carbonate and silicate minerals (including clay minerals). Also iron oxide slimes can be present. From these substances cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe2+ and A13+ can potentially dissolve and be present in the aqueous phase accompanying the various minerals. These ions and their hydrolysis products can have a substantial effect on any subsequent flotation scheme. The present study investigates the effect of the noted ions on both the stability and electrokinetic behavior of barite suspensions.

Feldspars have major uses in glass manufacture and in ceramic products. About 6 million metric tons (6.6 million short tons) are used annually. Feldspars are desirable because of their high aluminum and alkali contents. Na feldspars are favored for glass, while K feldspar is often preferred in the pottery and tile industries. Economic deposits occur in a variety of geological environments. Most are in granites or granite-like bodies, pegmatites being a common source worldwide. Alkali granites, particularly those some- times called alaskites, are mined directly as a source of feldspar and associated minerals. Some other igneous bodies, such as aplites, rhyolites, and partly altered granites (for example china stone) provide alternative feldspar-rich products. Nepheline syenites and phonolites are other sources of feldspar and contain higher amounts of alkalis. Feldspar-rich (arkosic) sediments derived from the weathering of pegmatites and granites are widely extracted and processed for use in ceramics. The present study reviewed the various sources of feldspars throughout the world. Data on the quality of products has been taken from literature, and samples have been obtained from a large number of producers. The mineralogy and chemistry of the samples has been determined and, as far as possible, have been related to the geology of the source area. Feldspar products show a wide range of chemical and mineralogical compositions. Some are pure Na feldspar (albite), others are made up entirely of K feldspar (microline and orthoclase), but many are mixtures of Na and K feldspars. Significant quantities of quartz are often present, and many products contain mica and kaolinite. Fe203 con- tents are very low, typically less than 0.1 percent. Detailed mineralogical studies show that four groups of products can be recognized on the basis of feldspar mineralogy. These are albite, albite with microcline, microcline with orthoclase, and orthoclase with albite. Products containing microcline and orthoclase together are mostly sedimentary in origin. Those with albite only, or albite with microcline have a pegmatitic or granite origin. Those containing orthoclase as the dominant K feldspar are derived from aplites or rhyolites. There does not appear to be any relationship between the feldspar mineralogy and the quartz content. Peraluminous S- type granites and pelite-dominated high-grade metamorphic rocks, in which there is a significant volatile component, are likely to be the most important feldspar sources. Partial kaolinization of feldspar-containing rocks often improves minability, decreases crushing costs, reduces iron content, and increases the K2O/Na2O ratio.

More than 150 Mt (165 million st) of material crashed down at the Bingham Canyon Mine (Rio Tinto/Kennecott Utah Copper) near Salt Lake City, UT on April 10, 2013. The mine, one of the largest openpit mines in the world, ceased operations and evacuated personnel prior to the slide when it was discovered that material was moving at a rate of 5 cm/d (2 in./day). The slide destroyed the mine?s visitor?s center, buried several pieces of large mining equipment and severely hampered production. The Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. immediately began to assess the damage and look for options to reestablish operations. The highly unstable ground ? emphasized by another minor slide in September 2013 ? makes any cleanup efforts extremely dangerous. With terrain too dangerous for human operators, Kennecott was forced to look for alternatives that would help the company work on the treacherous slopes of the landslide while also keeping personnel safe.

This paper discusses a series of tests designed to help answer the age old question: ?How much does the belt cleaner wear my belt?? The experimental set up and test method are described. The main variables are: belt cleaner blade materials, cleaning pressures, cleaning angles, belt speeds, and belt top cover grade. The bulk material used is a standard test-grade silica sand. The measured results include: blade mass loss, belt mass loss, and cleaning efficiency.

The mining industry appears to be slowly rebounding. But many individuals and company officials are still smarting from the beating they received during the recent recession. As a result, companies have taken the "lean and mean" approach. As pointed out at the Oct. 24-26, 1984 SME-AIME Fall Meeting in Denver, CO, companies are placing more emphasis on optimizing their operations through more efficient mining and processing technologies and equipment. Empathizing with the mining industry's woes was the meeting's welcoming luncheon speaker, John D. Withrow, Jr., executive vice president product development for Chrysler Corp. Withrow paralleled Chrysler's problems of a few years ago with the current problems facing the US mining industry. He said Chrysler's come-back centered around its engineering and technical personnel, who regained "their seat at the head table." "In short," Withrow said, "we had lost the competitive edge. By cutting costs and people and improving our products we got everybody to believe we could." The 2700 participants at the Fall Meeting attended technical sessions geared toward turning mining back into a productive and profitable industry. Sessions and symposia included papers on precious metals extraction, crushing and grinding innovations, geomechanics, environmental control, health and safety, and various commodities. This article briefly highlights some of the papers presented. To order preprints of these technical papers, see ME, December 1984, pages 1620 and 1621. Computers Gain Mining Acceptance High tech has reached mining. As evidenced by many papers, computers have become valuable tools in many applications. These include tailings ponds operation and waste management; truck dispatching; mine design, simulation, and scheduling; monitoring; and reclamation. Mine planning is generally labor intensive and requires a considerable amount of the planner's time. P. K. Chatterjee, X. Chung, and Y. Jianjy described a computer-generated interactive graphics approach to under-ground coal mine planning that lessens the manhours involved in producing plans. The computer program examined exploratory borehole information. This included coal seam thickness, tonnage, quality constraints, and the nature of their distribution. Layout designs were then initiated and a probabilistic simulation performed to determine production levels of different extraction strategies. The interactive graphics approach gives planners the ability to quickly evaluate several layout alternatives and select the best one. For surface coal mines, M. A. White, of Arch Minerals Corp., explained several computer programs that aided in his company's surface mine plans. Several drill hole database and modeling pack¬ages are available. But Arch tech¬nicians developed specific pro¬grams for model strip areas. They were used to form long-term pro¬jections for various area and semi¬area stripping operations. They also generated reports on yard¬age, tonnage, quality, and ratio in¬formation. The information is used in budgeting, to compare mine plans, and to analyze acqui¬sition candidates. While computer-based truck dispatching systems have been used in mining for some time, earlier systems were run on ex¬pensive mainframe or high per¬formance minicomputers. As such, computer-based truck dis¬patching systems have been too expensive for all but the largest mines. Recently, however, a microcomputer-based system, af¬fordable to smaller mine opera¬tors, has become technologically feasible. Y. C. Kim and W. E. Kolb re¬ported on a simulated microcom¬puter system that uses strategi¬cally placed signposts in the pit area to automatically detect truck movements. A microprocessor in the signpost sends information to the microcomputer. The computer determines the truck's assign¬ment and alerts the dispatcher. He radios the driver his assign¬ment. In addition to the technical pa¬pers, an introductory short course on microcomputers was offered at the meeting. L. M. Kass and J. P. Editor&apos;s note: Minerals concentration is a disparate area, one involving many disciplines. Flotation, flocculation, reagents, microbial processes, gravity and magnetic separation, and the areas of coal and oil shale - concentration is relevant to all of these. In his article, Nagaraj reviews the latest developments and findings in concentration that have ocurred during the past year. Flotation The Monograph Series "Development in Mineral Processing," (Elsevier, 1985) was devoted to "Flotation of Sulfide Minerals." This volume has 26 articles covering the aspects of flotation chemistry, process development, plant design and equipment, and modeling and process control. The numerous articles on sulfide flotation had one recurring theme - the role of electrochemical processes and redox potentials in flotation and depression. Significant advances have been made in this area. A differential desorption-reflotation process was developed for the beneficiation of calcitic phosphate pebble (Hsieh and Lehr, Industrial Engineering and Chemistry, 1985). The carbonate and phosphate minerals were first separated from silica using fatty acid and the modifiers diphosphonic acid and HF. The collector on phosphate was then desorbed using sulfuric acid, and calcite was selectively floated without additional collector. A two-stage conditioning - initially at pH 10, followed by that at pH < 4.5 - with sodium oleate was developed to improve the separation between apatite and dolomite (Moudgil and Chanchani, Minerals and Metallurgical Processing, MMP, 1985). Separation of Mussorie rock phosphate in India from gangue calcite, dolomite, silicates, pyrite, and carbonaceous impurities was achieved with a three-stage flotation only on -75 µm (-200 mesh) fraction (Vaman Rao et al., International Journal of Mineral Processing, IJMP, 1985). The separation of fine SiC whiskers from other products of coked rice hulls by immiscible liquid and froth flotation was achieved using M1BC, pine oil, and mineral spirits (Parekh and Goldberger, MMP, 1985). Flotation was more economical. The carrier flotation separation of hematite fines from quartz fines was effected using coarse hematite as a carrier and oleic acid and ferric chloride (Cristoveanu and Meech, CIM Bulletin, 1985). Potash recovery from brines by laboratory-pan solar evaporation and amine flotation was discussed by Foot and Juiatt (Salts and Brines &apos;85, Proceedings, 1985). Flotation in a 45-kg/h (99-lb per hour) unit recovered more than 95% of the potash in schoenite and sylvite concentrates containing 28% and 62% K2O, respectively. The effects of fresh concrete into cement and aggregate by a single-step flotation process in aqueous suspension was described (Naegle, Chemical Engineering Science, 1985). The physico-chemical principles for the selective separation of proteins from mixtures using flotation were discussed by Ostermaier and Dobias (Colloids & Surfactants, 1985). Selective flocculation of hematite from silica was studied by Bagster and Mcllvenny (IJMP, 1985). Selective flocculation was more favorable with more highly charged anionic polyacrylamides and with high molecular weight. The cationic and non-ionic polymers flocculated both minerals. In minerals mixtures, there appeared to be very little selectivity unless a combination of dispersant and electrolyte was used. The effect of dissolved minerals species, such as Cu, Fe, and Ni on flocculation of chalcopyrite, pentlandite, millerite, pyrrhotite, and covellite was studied by Acar and Somasundaran (SME-AIME, 1985). Reagents There were some major advances made in reagent development for the minerals processing industry. Cyanamid introduced several classes of collectors, one of which - the diaryl monothiophosphates as acid circuit col¬lectors of sulfides and oxidesulfide ores - was commercialized in 1985. The monothiophosphates are more stable and powerful collectors than the xanthates and dithiophosphates. Hydrolyzed dithiophosphate containing 80% monothio and 20% dithiophosphate was found to give optimum recovery of copper from crude cementation precipitate and separation of Cu and Ni sulfides from matte (Akimova et al., Obogashch, Tonkov, Rud, OTR, 1985).
