Most coals are susceptible to spontaneous heating which in turn creates problem to mining, storage and transportation of coal. It is impossible in actual practice o eliminate spontaneous heating but spontaneous combustion can effecively be controlled through a clear understanding of its mechanism and the factors affecting it. There are altogether six stages in the process of spontaneous combustion. This includes the water adsorption stage and six oxidation stages: chemi-sorption (upto 70°C), decomposition of peroxygens (70°C-150°C), oxy-coal formation (150°C-230°C), combustion initiation (230°C) and active combustion (> 230°C). Heat is produced in all these stages. On the other hand heat is also dissipated so that some equilibrium temperature is reached. If this temperature exceeds a certain critical value (generally about 70°C), coal oxidation may advance to spontaneous combustion. The major factors influencing spontaneous combustion of coal are: coal rank, maceral composition,, water, mineral matter, joints and fissures, seam depth and thickness, mine Layout, method of ventilation, etc. Susceptibility is high for low rank coals and generally decreases with increase in rank. Of the macerals, the exinites are generally most susceptible, the inertinites least and the vitrinites somewhere in between. Water plays a major role on the spontaneous heating of coal, assisting in someways and inhibiting in other. Unrecovered coal in the gob (generally in thick seams) is a major source of fire hazards and this is specially important in shallow mine. Proper design of mine ventilation system can substantially reduce the risk of mine fire. Panel layout and load transfer can affect the development of induced cracks which in turn influence spontaneous heating. Finally, the difference between the spontaneous heating of coal in a seam and that in storage or transportation is mainly due to the change in moistured content, air circulation through the coal and coal fragmentation. These aspects have been analyzed in this paper with a view o reducing the risk of spontaneous combustion.

In today's modern gold mining industry in Australia, and the world, more and more companies are recognising the competi­tive advantages gained by implementing an effective training program for operations (processing plant) personnel. Plant operators, or process technicians, are unique amongst all other gold mine employees. They are at work in shifts cov­ering 24 hours a day and their actions can have a profound effect on the operation's economic performance. To a large degree, the minute to minute decisions and actions of an operator can deter­mine whether gold is extracted to bullion in the goldroom or is discharged into the tailings dam. Experience has suggested that most small to medium sized gold operations in Australia, and even some large ones, have not implemented an effective training program. This is not attrib­uted to deliberate negligence or "anti" attitudes against training, moreover mill superintendents and metallurgy managers are technical people not oriented to human resource techniques. Usually the demands of designing, constructing and commis­sioning a gold plant overshadow the need for training in the first instance, In fact some well designed plants treating friendly oxide friable ore have little need for a dynamic well trained oper­ating staff. However, many plants do require a thinking team to optimise production and changing ore conditions towards the end of a mine's life can expose poor competence levels at large expense. Few managers will argue that training is a necessity and results in a win-win situation. The operators win by increased job skills, job satisfaction, clear career development and possibly better pay conditions. Trained personnel usually reciprocate with increased effmt and work ethic. The company wins also by having a thinking team which will maximise gold production and reduce operating costs.

Man is a short time resident of the planet Earth. He does not have the memory to fully comprehend just what is going on. His span of knowledge can be related to the life of the world to see that this is the case. A museum at Grand Canyon features a geologic clock that compresses Earth's age of 4.5 billion years into 24 hours. Man's estimation of the earth's age has changed radically in the past half century. In 1930, one prominent geologist asserted that the age of the Earth was ". . . at least 600 million years." Later, physicists used radioactive clocks to conclude that the Earth's age was 1.6 billion years. More recently, geologists have found rocks in northwestern Australia estimated to have formed 4.5 billion years ago. As we learn more about what is underfoot, the estimate of Earth's age might change again. The Grand Canyon's 24 hour clock shows that the dinosaurs were the dominant life form for 165 million years. Then an event occurred that wiped them out about 65 million years ago. The prevailing theory is that an asteroid struck the Earth and generated enough dust to wipe out the vegetation upon which most dinosaurs fed. During Earth's existence, there have been at least 12 such mass extinctions - the worldwide disappearance of diverse animal groups. On a planet that has been around for 4.5 billion years and that may continue to exist for another 4.5 billion, it seems reasonable to expect that further mass extinction's will occur. According the Grand Canyon's 24hour clock, the 165 million year reign of the dinosaurs amounted to about five minutes. On that 24 hour clock, the world has been dinosaur free for almost two minutes.

Sources of lead contaminated soils are numerous, i.e., the uses of leaded gasoline, lead-based paints, leaded pesticides, solders, smelting of lead concentrates, refining of lead products, automobile demolition, recycling of lead batteries, and so on. Conservative estimation by the US Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, indicated that several thousand lead contaminated sites are awaiting remediation. The current remediation technologies include immobilization, reclamation and soil washing. In this paper, the above remediation technologies will be reviewed, and where appropriate, the economics of processes discussed and future possibilities indicated.

The extraction of industrial minerals is usually confined to relatively small mining operations. The recent COSMAR (Committee on Surface Mining and Reclamation) report found that 93% of all mines in the United States were of the small unit variety. Also, of the total number of mines in the U.S. (15,279) 96% were in the industrial minerals (non-metals excluding coal) category. To break it down further, 86% were sand and gravel, and crushed stone operations. Therefore, we are talking about a very large number of small mining operations. If these small miners can afford to hire a college graduate, what kind of training should this person have beyond the normal mining engineering curriculum to best serve the problems that he or she will encounter?

Maptek, an international development software company, released version 3.2 of its Vulcan three-dimensional mining and geological software package. This latest release is expected to give clients better graphics performance and improved overall solutions. In addition, the company also released the NT version of Vulcan for Unix and personal computers. More than 800 code changes have gone into the 3.2 release, the Lakewood, CO-based company said. Many of these changes were in response to requests from Maptek's customers. Others have been motivated internally by the company to achieve better performance in its Envisage graphics interface. The introduction of hot keys and user-defined menus makes Envisage a more flexible interface and a more productive working environment. A new animation option provides new ways to enhance the organization and display of data. The animated data can include point, string, grid, triangulation and photographic-draped data. The shaft-mapping facility is also included in version 3.2. It enables the cylindrical view of the shaft to be unwrapped and displayed on the screen while the data remains in its true world coordinates. Major upgrades to Vulcan include underground blast design and geotechnical modules. The new blast design module allows the user to develop a ring design in any plane defined by the stope layout. Radial and offset holes can be developed. User-friendly editing tools make adjustments to the initial design a simple task. The user defines the plotting and reporting of rings and plot style templates allow flexibility in reporting. New features in the geotechnical toolbox include options to create daylight windows and pitch lines on the stereo nets. Geotechnical databases can be directly updated from the interpretation of the stereo net. Direct annotation of the symbols on the net is now possible and the stereo net display can be customized. Improvements to the documentation and links within the text have made the on-line help easier to navigate. Maptek also released the NT version of Vulcan soft- ware. The comprehensive design of the software pack- age for Unix and personal computers provides a three-dimensional geological modeling and mine planning system within a natural graphics environment. Users who require the power to manipulate extra- large and complex data sets will still be served by the Unix platform. Users who handle small-to-large datasets can now choose between Unix and personal computer platforms. The NT version will appeal primarily to companies that already have a personal computer network. Response to industry feedback was the basis for developing the NT version. "We want to ensure that our clients receive the optimal product for their needs," said Nicolas Simon, vice president of Maptek in North America. Some advantages of the NT version include: ? Most mining professionals are familiar with the personal computer platform. ? All of the familiar personal computer tools are now available to Vulcan users. ? Resource modeling tools that previously required the powerful Unix workstations have been brought into the personal computer environment. This will help mining companies save money. American Barrick Resources Corp. has come farther, faster in the last 11 years than any mining company in recent memory. Acquisition of Lac Minerals Ltd. in August 1994 now makes Barrick the largest gold producer in the world outside South Africa. In terms of market capitalization, the company is the world's most valued gold producer. American Barrick's 28.3-km2 (7000acre) Goldstrike property on Nevada's Carlin Trend, the primary engine for past growth, was purchased in 1987 for $62 million. Regarded as an attractive exploration target, Goldstrike instead propelled American Barrick to the front rank of world gold producers. In 1993, the company produced 50.75 t (1,631,988 oz), 44.78 t (1,439,929 oz) from Goldstrike. Reserves on the property totaled 905 t (29.1 million oz) at the end of 1993, the largest in North America.

The Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota is one of the few remaining gold properties still in operation, in this country. The mine is relatively deep, with a bottom production level of 4250 feet, and a bottom development of 6200 feet. 4, 800 tons of ore are produced daily from three rather large, but inconsistent ore bodies; the dip of which is easterly at about 72 degrees, and the plunge to the south is about 30 degrees. The ore is, for the most part, a chlorite schist with large veins of secondary quartz and cummingtonite schist The ore is not continuous in any direction, but is localized at the ridges of the very intricate system of anti clinal folds. This property has been in active production since its establishment in 1876, except for a period during World War II. The incentive, or contract pay system, has been a gradual process that has been developed by the trial-and-error method down through the years. In looking over the old records, hand-shoveling was paid on an incentive basis as far back as 1916. Since this time, the contract system has grown until it now includes almost all types of underground work - except haulage and maintenance work

Developing a mining venture in a foreign country, particularly in South Africa, can be a real challenge to those involved in the operation. The mining division of Southland Energy Corp. was asked to offer consultative support to the New Union Gold Mine, located in the Giyani District, Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, to aid in their expansion from an approximately 65 tonne per day exploration- exploitation project into a full scale mining operation of 300 tpd by January, 1987 with further expansion to 600 tpd by mid-year. This paper ad- dresses the development of the expansion plans, which are presently being implemented. History. Located in the Northern Transvaal, Republic of South Africa, the New Union Gold Mine is part of what is known as the Klein Letaba gold fields. Gold prospecting in the Klein Letaba gold field area dates back to the earliest years of European prospecting activities in the Transvaal where, reportedly, gold was discovered as early as 1887 (figure 1). The claims com- prising the present New Union Gold Mine have been explored by a number of individuals and relatively small mining groups since the early 1930's. The work done by these entities was aimed at recovering as much gold as possible in the quickest and cheapest manner possible and, as a result, the area was not explored in a systematic fashion. The long-term potential of the area, therefore, was not known until very recently.

The title of the paper which I have been asked to present is somewhat misleading it infers in fact that there is a definite coalbed height below which raps or canopies cannot be applied to electric face equipment. Although this may be so with regard to certain pieces of existing equipment under certain conditions, to date we do not have enough experience to determine this magic number. Therefore MESA is continuing to hold the line on the time frames stipulated in Section 75.1710-1 of the Mandatory Safety Standards - Underground Coal Mines, which at this point in time requires these protective structures in mining heights of 60 inches or more. In order to give you an idea why we are taking such a firm stand on this matter, I believe it is necessary to describe some of the background work that was done prior to promulgation of the regulations and to give a resume of our experience since the requirements have become effective. Initially MESA made field investigations of all underground mines to determine what the state of the art was in the use of cabs and canopies for protecting equip¬ment operators from falls of roof. These studies revealed that the application was basically in its infancy and what progress had been made was due to the impetus of the mine operators themselves. Manufacturers of electric face equip¬ment provided these structures only on the direct order from the mining company and built them to their specifications. In talking to the operators and the miners in mines where cabs or canopies were in use, it was the consensus that these structures did improve safety and that although originally there was some reluctance on the part; of the miners to work in the confines of a cab or canopy, mast would not work without them once they had been adapted to the equipment.

The responsible treatment of natural resources, including mineral raw materials, contributes to the protection of the environment. The management of resources and the environment encompasses reduction of emission through application of environmentally friendly processes, economical use of resources, recycling and substitution, application of energy saving processes, land reclamation and recultivation, as well as a well balanced regional and land use planning. A variety of materials are needed for measures to protect the environment. Many of these materials are, or to a large percentage consist of, mineral raw materials, which become effective either directly or indirectly in their natural state or after an appropriate industrial treatment. We call them environmental minerals. Although extraction and processing of these mineral raw materials destined for use in the protection of the environment, may have a negative impact on the environment on one hand, preventive or curing measures to protect the environment on the other would not be possible without them. We have to accept certain smaller burdens of the environment, which naturally will have to be kept at the lowest possible level, in order to avoid or minimize greater damages to nature. In the broad group of industrial minerals and rocks there is a wide variety of mineral raw materials, which lend themselves for countermeasures in favor of the environment. To hamper their production and processing through excessive environmental regulations would make the protection of the very environment more difficult or even impossible.

It had been more than a decade since this many booths were occupied at an SME Annual Meeting, but at the 2010 meeting in Phoenix, AZ 630 booths were sold to 470 vendors from the entire spectrum of the mining and minerals industry. Exhibitors such as Metso, FLSmidth, West-Tech, ABB, NIOSH, Eriez and Resource West took their usual prominent places on the exhibit floor and were joined by newcomers such as tunnel boring machine manufacturer Herrenknecht AG, Frontier Kemper, the International Society of Explosive Engineers and more than 100 other first-time exhibitors. On the floor, one could find everything from a new pair of boots to a new career in the recruitment pavilion where some of the biggest companies in mining (Barrick Gold, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining, etc..) set up shop. The following is a look at some of the companies and products that were on display at the 2010 meeting. Geologic mapping was undertaken in the Sierrita Mountains as part of a Doctoral program at the University of Arizona, Tucson. During the study, approximately 35 square miles was mapped in detail, with particular attention given to specific areas of great or significant structural complexity and their relation to mineralization in the vicinity. A combination, of field studies and photogeologic interpretation was used in order to define regional and local structural controls for disseminated copper-molybdenum mineralization in and adjacent to the study area. Gratitude is expressed to the faculty of the University of Arizona, Department of Geology for their assistance in this work and to Bear Creek Mining Company for making numerous reports and drill cores available for study.

A new minitest of in situ uranium leaching processes at reservoir conditions is proposed. The test which consists of a single observation/ production well and two observation wells is designed to permit the evaluation of both restoration and leaching parameters. It is shown that by using a straight forward history matching procedure, sometimes called a type curve analysis, both the rate of leaching and the ultimate uranium recovery can be evaluated based on the results of the test. Type curves are presented for the case in which the reaction rate is kinetically controlled and there are no other minerals competing for oxidant. Other situations can be approached using the same techniques as those presented here.

The single most unique design feature of the Centralia Coal Mine is the public information program. Just what the heck does public information have to do with the development of a coal mine? The utilities of today have had to build larger and larger plants to keep down the costs of power to the consumer. The large plants require huge amounts of capital, take up large areas of real estate, consume unprecedented amounts of coal, and generate large quantities of waste products which have to be reckoned with. Coal mines supplying these plants have also increased in size and production to meet the power plants' unending appetite for coal. This means the disturbance of great areas of land and significant alterations to the landscape. Today's public is greatly concerned about the environment in which he is living. The great size of a power plant with its large stacks, coal piles, and the coal mine with its large earth movers, disturbed acreages and the resulting waste products of both operations appears to present a threat to his environment. Because of this,' many power plants and coal mines are having public acceptance problems. This has resulted in the passage of stringent legislation and in some cases brought upon construction delays for major power plants.

"A large-scale wildfire had broken out at Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada during May 2016. Many oil sands mining activities were affected due to the wildfire and the associated ash emissions. In particular, ash emission generated from the fire outbreak is a huge problem during the post-fire cleanup. These emissions pose a severe health hazard to workers, environment, and global climate. The ashes emitted into the atmosphere are caused by either human activities or climate conditions. The objective of this research is to assess the effect of three different ash dust suppressants, namely water, #1 surfactants, and #2 polymers at various volumetric concentrations on ashes samples to prevent propagation of fine solid emissions into the atmosphere. It is found that both #1 surfactants solution and #2 polymers solution are effective in retaining fugitive ash dust generated from the ashes. Volumetric concentration efficiency of 0.05% of #1 surfactant and 5% of #2 polymers in 500 ml of water have been proven to provide ash dust retention efficiency greater than 99% after the spraying of these suppressants. It is also found that both #1 surfactants solution and #2 polymers solution maintain an ash dust retention efficiency higher than that of the use of only water. This confirms the merit of using chemical dust suppressants on fugitive ash dust for a longer period, which is proven by the 72-hour data from this experiment. This study gives a general view of how effective chemical suppressants on fugitive ash emissions work. INTRODUCTION On May 1st, 2016, a large-scale wildfire gutted Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Many oil sands mining activities were affected due to the wildfire and the associated ash emission. Due to the wildfire, some of the biggest oil sands companies in Fort McMurray such as Royal Dutch Shell and Suncor Energy shut down their oil production, at 255,000 and 350,000 barrels per day respectively [1]. Syncrude Canada Ltd scaled down its normal production capacity level of 350,000 barrels per day [1]. This generated an estimated loss of about 1.1 million barrels of oil production per day, constituting a 30% reduction in the Canadian daily oil production, crippling the economy [2]. This loss in production by the companies translated into 0.33 % of the Alberta GDP in 2016 constituting a loss of $985 million and 0.06 % of the entire Canadian economy [3]. In 2017, it is estimated that the rebuilding and reclamation of the affected areas in Fort McMurray will add $ 1.3 billion in GDP to Alberta’s economy [3]. A population of over 90,000 people was evacuated from the location and its surroundings for health and safety reasons [4]. The fire destroyed about 2,400 structures and over 500,000 hectares of forest vegetation in Fort McMurray, leaving an estimated 232,000 tonne of post-fire ashes [5,6]."

"A tunnel project poses many challenges; the operation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) being one of them. Mechanized tunneling is known as a safe and effective alternative to other methods in terms of schedule and cost; however, efficiency can be severely affected by a bad TBM selection and qualification and employment of inexperienced operators. The success of a mechanized tunneling project involves a comprehensive and interdisciplinary consideration of all contributing factors such as TBM technical specification and selection, TBM design and procurement including ancillary equipment and tunnel linings. The tunnel equipment selection along with the operation can make or break the project. The objective of this paper is to address the importance of the skills and qualifications of the TBM crew with particularity to the TBM Operator. The study includes the Owner and Consultant involvement in the selection and pre-qualification of the TBM crew and specifically the TBM operator as well as the role of Contractor and TBM manufacturer in TBM operator training. This paper also analyzes the possibility of issuing a TBM operator certification, and discusses the benefits and significance of periodic training and certification programs. INTRODUCTION Training in the tunneling industry is not a new topic. The industry continues to evolve and become more complex with technology advances and expansion of mechanical tunnelling to mechanized shaft construction, large diameter drilling and mining industry applications. The need for professionals trained to operate mechanized tunnelling equipment is ever increasing, while there is a significant number of veterans who will be ageing out in the next 5 years. Consequently attracting young professional is a very important aspect of sustaining a qualified pool of professionals. For any given tunnel project, the owner and the engineer spend up to several years, studying the ground conditions during preliminary and final design. Post contract award the contractor spend additional months studying the ground again to develop the optimum means and methods for construction. All this time and money spent at the beginning of the project has the purpose of developing the optimum tunnel design, assessing the risk associated and implementing mitigation measures to reduce risks to acceptable levels. Following the tunnel design process, sophisticated TBMs are being specified and sourced to ensure the best tool for the job. The question raises here: Are there available experienced/trained professionals capable of operating these sophisticated machines?"

All pigments and extenders or fillers whether organic or inorganic fall into the following broad general classes: I. Colored II.-White III. Black IV. Metallic A pigment- is any particulate matter that is essentially insoluble and chemically unaffected by the media into which it is dispersed. According to this very broad definition, colored pigments, white pigments, fillers, extenders, and functional pigments would all be included. The particulate size range would also be quite broad ranging from very fine colloidal particles (~0.01µ) to relatively coarse particles (~100.0µ). This broad definition is usually subdivided into more practical divisions which tend to relate the classification of the pigment to its primary function in the system in which it is used. Hence, the word extender implies that its major purpose may be to extend the system.

Column flotation cells continue to gain acceptance in the coal industry for the treatment of high-ash streams containing clay slimes. Unfortunately, some industrial installations have failed to meet expectations due to improper scale-up, incorrect operation and poor ancillary circuit design. To overcome these problems, case studies have been conducted to fully define the capabilities of column cells for coal applications. These data have been used to develop generic engineering guidelines for column circuit design and operation. An economic analysis has also been conducted to illustrate the importance of key capital cost considerations. These analyses indicate that column cells are significantly more expensive than conventional machines, although this difference can be greatly reduced through the installation of very large-diameter columns.
