The P.W. Gillibrand Company has been processing and stockpiling a suite of heavy minerals at its Soledad Canyon Mine as co-products with construction aggregates since 1984. The heavy minerals are composed of ilmenite, magnetitie, apatite and zircon. The source of the heavy minerals is the Precambrian San Gabriel Anorthosite Complex of the western San Gabriel Mountains. The valuable minerals are readily amenable to standard ore dressing techniques, such as, gravity, magnetic, flotation and electrostatic separation with good recovery and product quality. More than 20,000 short tons of coarse ilmenite were sold in 1990 to the export market for titanium pigment production.

Rapidly rising gas and oil prices and the falling quality of coal is forcing energy users in many parts of the world to consider the application of low grade fuel, particularly coal, for steam raising and power generation. However, the use of such low grade coal is normally resisted by the consumer because of operational problems associated with high ash content, sulfur emission and, in some instances, slagging problems caused by low melting temperature constituents in the ash. Recently developed technology involving 'fluidized bed combustion' offers a potential solution to these operational problems. Much of the early work was conducted in Britain, where rig tests were commenced during the early 1960's. This has led on to the successful conversion and operation of a fluidized bed fired industrial boiler at the Renfrew works of Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. Orders for the first commercial boilers incorporating this technology have recently been announced. Significant development work on fluidized combustion is now being undertaken in various parts of the world, in particular North America, Germany and Japan, and the first large scale units are under construction or being commissioned. This paper concentrates on the development of the technology in Britain, outlines the reasons for applying fluidized bed combustion and de-scribes its application at atmospheric pressure for steam raising and at elevated pressure for power generation . Coal Processing Consultants is a Partnership between the National Coal Board and Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. of Britain and has been established in order to provide technical advice and economic evaluations on all aspects of coal processing and utilization. In Pennsylvania there are two distinct coal regions, bituminous and anthracite, in which the mining conditions and production trends are different. Bituminous mining is more mechanized, and production is increasing. This report is concerned specifically with the bituminous area. The bituminous coal industry apparently is facing a shortage of miners and mine officials which may become acute by 1970. Since 1949, when Pennsylvania had more than 100,000 bituminous coal miners, the number has steadily decreased. There are two principal reasons for the decrease of certified miners and mine officials. These reasons are the fact that apprentices are almost a thing of the past and the fact that the image of the coal miner is a poor one to people in general and to parents in particular. This has contributed greatly to the high average age of our miners today. The average age of all those employed in the mines is 50. Yet it is known that the progress in mine mechanization requires younger and more alert men to operate the newer type equipment.

INTRODUCTION The scope of mineral finance extends beyond the economic aspects of property evaluation to all of those activities involving acquisition and utilization of funds with an objective to optimize the value of the firm. It must, therefore, en- compass consideration of the overall financial goals of the firm, decisions involving external versus internal growth and domestic versus foreign investments, management of working cap- ital, efforts to minimize the cost of capital, and decisions with regards to the instruments of long- term debt and equity financing. The scope of this section is limited to considerations of special interest to the mineral or petroleum engineer, which include the following aspects of mineral finance: (1) The technical aspects of mineral or coal property or oil and gas reservoir evaluation which provide the basis for estimation and forecasting of revenues and costs. (2) Estimation and forecasting of costs and prices in a inflationary economic environment. (3) Calculation of cash flows which model .. , the investment in minerals, coal or oil, and gas. Such models require assumptions as to the timing of cash flows, escalation of capital and operating costs, base prices, and escalation, the tax regime, royalties, division of profits and the economic aspects of loans. (4) The role of discount rate in the economic analysis of an investment which requires consideration of the opportunity costs of the firm, cost of capital, risk premiums. (5) Risk analysis including application of the concepts of conditional net present value, expected value, and risk preference as well as the application of the techniques of sensitivity and simulation. (6) Selection of application criteria for in- vestment decision making. (7) Capital structure with particular reference to the effect of debt financing. (8) Consideration of sources of funds utilized by the minerals industries. (9) Long-range planning including portfolio analysis. This section is limited to principles, methodologies, and trends in mineral investment, finance, and long-range planning in the United States with a perspective from the year 1984. Consideration of the key concepts is supplemented by case examples of investment risk analysis and financial structure. Important factors affecting mineral investment evaluation during the 1980s include volatile metals prices, cost inflation, and the introduction of techniques requiring the computer and its capacity for improved technical and economic analysis into the hands of those who know most about the industry. The personal computer is replacing the calculator on the desk of the individual analyst and is rapidly becoming a required tool for the study of engineering and economics. Examples of change brought about by the micro-computer include greatly improved techniques of cost estimation, wider application of the computer for project analysis, computer graphics, reserve estimation, geostatistical analysis, mine design and other techniques that capitalize on the ability of the computer to handle

The complexation of Alizarin Red S (ARS) at the surface of hydrous fluorapatite particles has been investigated at 25.0 C by means of potentiometric titrations, adsorption experiments in 0.1 M NaCI ionic medium, and Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) studies. A chemical model describing the reaction at the aqueous mineral surface has been established under equilibrium conditions according to the reaction [== -CaOH2 + HA2 - « _ =PO CaA2 - z + H30&apos;; to (int.) = -5.61 ± 0.02 3 a =PO- logBs-1110(int.) ( ) within the range 8.40 <_ -log[H ] <_ 9.80.] Experimental data were evaluated using the computer program FITEQL on the basis of a constant capacitance model for the electric double layer. The surface complex structure, has been proposed to involve the quinoid and alpha phenolic oxygens of ARS coordinated to the calcium sites on the fluorapatite surface.

There was no need for the people of Cleveland to ask “Where does the raw sewage go? We want to know!” because it was clear. The raw sewage was being discharged into Lake Erie during heavy rainfall events due to the outdated design of the combined sewer system. In efforts to resolve this ongoing issue for the City of Cleveland, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District developed Project Clean Lake in collaboration with the US EPA. Project Clean Lake is a 25-year, $3 billion program consisting of seven large-diameter CSO storage tunnels to be constructed beneath the city’s existing infrastructure. The first four tunnels have been completed using traditional hard rock TBM excavation methods. The fifth tunnel, the Shoreline Storage Tunnel Project, presents unique challenges and complexities as it will be the first large-diameter EPB TBM to dig under the City of Cleveland. The project itself consists of one tunnel drive 14,100' (2.7 miles) in length, two pipe jacking tunnels, three large slurry wall shafts, two diversion structures, and three regulator reconstructions. Upon completion of the project, 12 permitted CSO locations along Lake Erie will be taken offline, reducing overflow volumes by approximately 350 million gallons per year. This paper will discuss the current status of construction and the chosen means and methods, including the myriad of nuanced differences between hard rock and EPB TBM tunneling methods. Particular attention will be given to the site preparation, setup, and organization; TBM assembly; and TBM launching practices.

Both private industry and the Interior Department have become alarmed about the enormous amount of Federal land that has been withdrawn from appropriation either under the Mineral Leasing Laws or the Mining Law of 1872. According to a recent article by Gary Benethum and L. Courtland Lee, governmental actions have withdrawn nearly 400 million acres from the operation of the Mining Law of 1872 and over 500 million acres from the Leasing Laws. An addition al 100 million acres for the Mining Law of 1872 and 70 million acres for the Leasing Laws are either encumbered or being managed in such a way as to constitute a defacto withdrawal from mineral development. This means simply that mineral exploration end development under the Mining Law of 1872 is either prevented or discouraged in an area the size of the states of California, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and one half of Colorado combined. Under the Mineral Leasing Laws, exploration and development is either prevented or discouraged in an area equal in size to all the states east the Mississippi River, except Maine.

Laboratory testing was completed to determine the effectiveness of a fiberglass cable bolt (FCB) as a cuttable rock support for a continuous, hard-rock mining method. The FCB consists of four Polystal tendons combined in a node/antinode fashion, with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) spacers forming the anti-nodes. The largest ultimate pull-out load achieved by the FCB was 22 t (48,400 lb) at 89% of the tendons&apos; theoretical pullout load. This premature tendon failure is accredited to: • differential stresses within the tendons and • differential tendon displacement. An increase in pull-out resistance for a given embedment length is due to: • increased bond area, • reduced interfacial shear and • "wedge" effect. The critical embedment length was found to be 40% less than for conventional steel cable bolts (SCB) at a 127-mm (5-in.) node spacing. An FCB can have up to a 92% increase in load-carrying capacity over a conventional SCB at equal embedment lengths. The load carrying capacity is equivalent to SCB at a 960-mm (37.8-in.) embedment length. Though the FCB is 7.5% more expensive than the conventional SCB (installed), this cost may be offset by increased performance. FCBs are a potentially viable support alternative for continuous hard-rock mining.

Methods of utilizing flocculants as settling and filter aids for mineral processing slurries are reviewed. Broad chemical classifications and techniques for proper dilution, multiple addition, and combination treatments are discussed. A variety of custom built and commercially available systems for make up and delivery of flocculants to the application points are in use through- out the mining industry. Those concepts which, in the author&apos;s opinion, are particularly important to the successful make up and use of flocculants are presented in relationship to the available make up and feed systems. Actual industrial applications are included in the presentation.

Precious metals have been sought by man through time. The search has been the cause of many historic events as well as the founding of the famous Mexican, Minion centers of Durango, Guanajuato, Zacatecas and others. Bacis, a silver - cold deposit in the State of Durango was one of the lesser known centers established during Spanish colonial times. During the past year, metal prices have suffered a substantial decline, resulting in the closure of many mines. Through astute exploration, development and exploitation of the mine, the effect of the low prices has been offset and the mine is surviving these hard times.

Rubidium and cesium were discovered by Bunsen and Kirchhoff about 100 years ago. These two elements are by no means as abundant as sodium or potassium. Their occurrence in minerals is widespread, but usually as minor constituents. There is no known specific ore containing rubidium, but rubidium is found replacing the. other alkali metals in .some minerals.. Perhaps the highest concentration of rubidium found in one mineral is in lepidolite, KLi(OH,F)2A12Si3010, which contains from 0 to 3.5%*Rb20. 0n the average, lepidolite contains about 0.5% Rb20. Other sources of rubidium are carnallite, KMgCl3?6H20; pollucite, H20.2Cs20.2AI203.9SiO2; rhodizite, R20.2A1203-3B203; biotite, H2K(Mg,Fe)3A1(Si04)3; sea water, rivers, marine and fresh water organisms, soils, and plants. Cesium, even though it is the least abundant. of the stable alkalies, has a specific ore. Pollucites a hydrous cesium aluminum silicate, may con¬tain as high as 42.5% Cs20, although again, the average Cs20 content is about 25% among the handful of known deposits. Other cesium-containing minerals are lepidolite and carnallite. Rubidium and cesium are very much like potassium in chemical properties, consequently, they are hard to separate. Because of the difficulty in obtaining pure cesium and rubidium compounds coupled with the scarcity-of supply, prices were high and the two elements enjoyed little industrial use. In this paper, an innovative concept in longwall tailgate support is discussed. This new concept utilizes a new high capacity roof truss system in lieu of conventional wooden crib block. The first field test was conducted at Bailey Mine and was very successful. Similar tests have been installed in other mines and seams. An extensive instrumentation plan was designed and implemented in the truss test area. The test data has shown that the dynamic roof truss system effectively controls the various abutment pressures caused by longwall mining thus maintaining a stable tailgate entry.

The City of Akron will construct the Northside Interceptor Tunnel project, a U.S. EPA/ DOJ CSO Long Term Control Plan Project. The system will provide at least 10.3 million gallons of storage in a 16.5-foot finished ID and 6,660-foot-long rock tunnel. The system will reduce both overflow volume and number of overflow structures on the Cuyahoga River. The project includes deep drop shafts and more than 3,000 linear feet of 48 to 96-inch I.D. sewers installed by trenchless construction methods. This paper will discuss the project background, ground conditions, and other challenges overcome during the design phases.

Use of geostatistics to solve mining problems is gaining importance as the cost of developing new mines is increasing and there is a need to mine more marginal deposits. But, until recently, coal companies have shown little or no interest in geostatistics. However, the stringent quality controls on coal burning has led to a surge in interest in improved methods for estimating clean coal characteristics. Until now, most of the geostatistical applications have centered on the problems of estimating in-situ coal characteristics (Sabourin, 1975; Wood, 1976, 1979; Fang and Stark, 1976; Pauncz and Nixon, 1979; and Knudsen et al., 1980). Little work has been done in applying geostatistics to coal washability, except that by Armstrong (1980). Applying geostatistics to coal washability basically means the estimation of cleaned coal characteristics, with the aid of geostatistics. Cleaned coal estimation plays a very important role in overall emission control strategy, as can be seen by the general flow diagram of such a strategy shown in Figure 1. The scope of this paper is limited to one aspect of the overall emission control strategy shown in Figure 1; namely, the prediction of cleaned coal characteristics using geostatistics.

The leaching behavior of gold in ammonical solutions with iodine as an oxidant has been investigated using cyclic voltammogram and Tafel polarization. The majority of experiments was carried out at 75°C and the results were compared with the equilibrium consideration on the iodine-ammonia system. The distribution of nine iodide containing species at various pH values in the absence and presence of ammonia was considered at three different temperatures. It was found that by introduction of ammonia into the system, the concentration of iodide (r), iodine (12) and triiodide (13&apos;) is increased substantially which in turn helps the rate of dissolution of gold. The apparent activation energy was found to be about 46 kJ/mole, indicating a chemical controlled mechanism.

Two hours driving time west of Denver, CO and 21 km (13 miles) north of Leadville, Bartlett Mountain rises 4,065 m (13,337 ft) high in central Colorado&apos;s Tenmile Range. Bartlett Mountain is one of Colorado&apos;s most recognizable peaks, especially when the late afternoon sun casts a surreal, reddish light across its most prominent feature - the Glory Hole. This is a gaping, half-mile-wide, 245-m- (800-ft-) deep crater. Created by subsidence from 60 years of massive underground mining, the Glory Hole is a monument to the Climax Mine, one of the great achievements in American mining and metallurgy. For most of this century, the name Climax has been synonymous with brilliant mining engineering, innovative metallurgical research and entrepreneurial promotion of a once-obscure metal - molybdenum. Climax overcame an array of economic, technological and social problems to become a model for underground development of massive deposits of low-grade ores. It is one of the few mines in the world where cumulative production is measured in the billions of dollars. The Climax mineralization was emplaced 30 million years ago. Magmatic intrusions formed a large, mineralized stockwork within the granite country rock of Bartlett Mountain. Associated hydrothermal events forced superheated metal- and quartz-rich solutions through fracture zones, silicifying the country rock and depositing huge amounts of molybdenite, or molybdenum disulfide. The mineralized rock, a light gray, finely crystalline, silicified granite, is laced throughout with blue-gray quartz veinlets containing molybdenite. Although the richest ores graded only about 1% molybdenite, the Bartlett Mountain deposit contained more than 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of elemental mo- lybdenum.

The Homestake Gold Mine is one of the deepest and most extensively developed hardrock mines in North America. The mine is divided into five divisions which produce a total of 1.7 million metric tons of ore per year. In the past, labor intensive mining methods such as open cut-and-fill, shrinkage, and timber stoping were utilized. In recent years there has been an extensive change to the more productive methods including Vertical Crater Retreat and Mechanized Cut-and-Fill. Also, the percentage of production from the lower divisions below the 4850 level is increasing while upper level reserves are beginning to decline. Combined, these factors have strained the ventilation resources to the limit. By early 1984 it became clear that future production trends would require a detailed study of future ventilation resources. By November of 1984 the Ventilation Department completed a study to project these future requirements. This paper will detail the first phase of a scheduled two phase upgrade: the installation of a new surface fan.
