"Metallurgical process development in greenfield projects must define the comminution flowsheet and establish the equipment sizes that are required to deliver the project design criteria. These are critical steps that heavily influence the financial performance of the project, requiring a detailed understanding of the ore properties of the project resources and the best practice methods to size comminution machines. This paper reviews current practices for determining the ore characteristics relevant to comminution circuit design. Particular attention is given to the design of sampling and testing programs, and the methods commonly applied to size crushers and mills for conventional size reduction applications in mineral processing. This necessitates a detailed understanding of the ore properties that define the project resource. For brownfield projects the same objectives may apply for plant expansions, or the project objective may be simply to define the capacity and operating cost of an existing facility for a new ore source. The process development phase in either instance will typically comprise the following key activities:• Geometallurgical classification and sampling of the ore deposit or deposits.• Determination of comminution energy requirements.• Benchmarking similar projects.• Identification of flow sheet options.• Equipment selection and sizing.This paper is concerned specifically with process development testing and will as such focus on the first two activities on the list: sampling and testing of the deposit. The discussion will focus on testwork programs to support the design of comminution circuits commonly in use in mineral processing today, specifically crusher, tumbling mill and stirred mill technologies.It is important that any testwork program is designed giving consideration to the types of flow sheets that are viable for the project, and the data that will need to be generated to support the final equipment sizing. Designing a testwork program to only provide information about one particular type of flow sheet will not allow sufficient information to be generated for a rigorous trade-off analysis of options, and may therefore preclude financial optimization of the project. Testing programs should be designed to collect sufficient data to ensure that any backtracking at a later stage to fill in missing information is minimal."

Billions are being spent in shoring up aging infrastructure in the United States and other places, and new underground projects are being put out for bid.With each new project, comes new equipment, technology and tunneling methods. So it is incumbent on tunneling professionals to constantly improve their knowledge of the profession. This is where spending a few days with other underground construction professionals can assist the tunneler in keeping up.Every two years, tunnelers and underground construction engineers, contractors, suppliers, designers and owners from around the world gather for the Rapid Excavation Tunneling Congress (RETC). The 2017 conference was held in June in San Diego, CA. The UCA of SME puts on the conference.This years’ RETC attracted 1,400 attendees. The accompanying sold-out exhibit totaled 188 service and equipment suppliers. In addition, the conference had the UCA of SME bookstore, where the new History of Tunneling in the United States book was introduced. And a short course on tunnel rehabilitation was featured.Technical programmingRETC 2017 featured nearly 100 technical presentations. Topics covered the breadth of the global underground construction industry. Here is a sampling of a few. The proceedings from the conference is available from SME, 303-948-4200, www.smenet.org.Accomplishing extraordinary tasks as a machine supplier for Metro Doha: The construction of the Metro Doha in the State of Qatar established a modern, safe, efficient and integrated public transportation network. Upon final completion of multiple phases, the network will comprise four metro lines with a length of 216 km (83 miles) and 100 stations. Phase one comprises 112 km (43 miles of underground tunnels (56 km or 22 miles of twin-tube tunnels). Twenty-one earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines (TBM) were deployed by the four different joint ventures. The project was initiated, managed and supervised by the owner, Transport Authority Qatar Rail.Phase two of the Doha Metro will start upon the completion of Phase One in 2019 (Qatar Vision 2030). The owner placed full faith in the manufacturer’s abilities to deliver equipment of high quality, state of the art standards within the given time frame. This paper focused on the manufacturer’s scope of delivery and on the supplier’s high standards of quality in production, logistics and services."

Central to Newmont Gold's Mine planning system is the ability to interactively perform cut and fill operations on topographic contours and to accurately evaluate grades and tonnages within contour outlines using polygon set manipulation routines. This paper develops the applied geometry concepts that underlie these routines. Included are representation of volumes with contours, point in polygon test, block proportion in polygon calculation, polygon area and centroid calculation, and intersection, union, and complement between polygon sets.

Short term laboratory cell electrorefining experiments were performed to examine the impact of electrolyte composition, current density and temperature on deposit structure, roughness, and adhesion to 2B mill finished 316L stainless steel. Copper electrodeposits were produced using synthetic electrolytes with thiourea and the continuous addition of glue. Deposit structures were evaluated using X-ray diffractometry. Surface roughness was measured using profilometry and analyzed using scaling analysis. Finally, an internally developed method was used to measure the force required to remove the electrodeposited copper from stainless steel to determine adhesion strength.

The mineral aggregate industry is the world's largest mining and processing endeavor, yet it is graced with little of the romance or public awareness that accompanies mention of gold, silver, iron, copper, uranium, or aluminum mining efforts. Much of this reaction is undoubtedly due to the fact that the uses to which crushed stone and sand and gravel are normally put are not fully recognized or appreciated by the general public. Few individuals ever have occasion to purchase mineral aggregates for anything other than use for decorative shrubbery beds or walkways. They may, however, buy ready-mix concrete for a new patio, bituminous concrete for a new driveway, concrete blocks, or other building materials for a new room and never realize that the primary ingredients of their purchases are either direct or indirect products of the mineral aggregate industry. The average person driving past an operating crushed stone quarry or an active sand and gravel pit rarely realizes the economic impact the industry, represented by that operation, exercises on the general economy. He is not aware, nor does he really care, that elements of the modern comfortable environment to which he has grown accustomed rely to a great extent on the products of the crushed stone and sand and gravel industries Iron and steel, glass, cement, agriculture, and highway and building construction are but a few of the major industries to whom the products of the mineral aggregate industry are basic. Without these industries or without the stone, sand, and gravel basic to them, most of the major elements of our modern day civilization would be non-existent.

In the operation of today's large scale ore-processing mills, it is extremely important to have some way of making an objective evalu¬ation of the performance of the available flotation reagents. Attempts to do this may often result in inconclusive findings since the magnitude of the difference in the mill results for any two reagents is apt to be quite small compared to the variability introduced by the process and 'the analytical procedures used to measure them. In cases where two reagents give vastly; different mill results, evaluation becomes a simple matter and as such deserves no further attention here. A question of primary concern, however, is how a mill can go about evaluating the performance of two reagents which may, for example, give a difference of only 0.001% copper in the-tailings or of 0.2% in copper recovery. The casual observer may feel that such small differences may be of little importance, but in a mill-whose daily tonnage is between 30 and 40 thousand, these differences could mean a substantial savings. Before the presentation of an actual example of a reagent testing scheme designed for just this-purpose, perhaps a few minutes should be devoted to a review of some statistical methodology to be used later in the discussion.

Large variations of coal seam thickness and roof conditions are associated with the occurrence of mine floor undulation at Shoal Creek Mine, operated by Drummond Company, Inc.. Ground control problems, such as roof falls and face failures along with extremely high shield pressure and rapid face convergence, are often reported at the longwall face when these undulations exist. This greatly increases equipment downtime and causes production delays. As a result. a comprehensive study of mine geology including roof conditions and longwall performance were conducted in the mine. With the help of continuous full-face shield pressure monitoring using the Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System (LoSCoMS), a large data base of shield pressure with various roof conditions has been established. This enables the mine operators to accurately evaluate the roof behavior and shield performance and to take the appropriate operational steps at the face to reduce the number of downtime and face failures. This paper summarizes all works and findings from the study including detailed roof geology and its effect on longwall performance.

Abstract. Induced fluorescent sorting is a means of beneficiating an ore by selective labeling with a reagent combination which fluoresces when activated by ultraviolet light The reagent combination normally consists of a surface active compound and a fluorescent dye. The surfactant adheres selectively to a specific surface and carries the dye with it. Upon activation with ultraviolet light, the labeled pieces, in the size range 1.27 cm to 20 cm (0.5 to 8 in.), are detected during free fall by photosensitive cells and ejected by water jets. Either ore or gangue may be labeled.

Concern about environmental pollution goes back many centuries, but until recently most efforts to control it have been perfunctory and spasmodic, aimed largely at coal smoke and other visible pollutants. Air pollution is to a large degree a byproduct of our economic development, and scientific knowledge of the causes and character of such pollution is more extensive than the technology to handle the waste byproducts of our industrial civilization. The removal of all constituents foreign to the air from the effluents produced by an industrialized society is obviously impractical at this time. There is widespread difference of opinion regarding acceptable ambient air concentration levels for the Various pollutants produced by combustion processes, but there is basic agreement that the pollution of the atmosphere must be controlled and eventually reduced. The magnitude of the air pollution problem has been increasing rapidly because our expanding economy calls for an ever-increasing consumption of energy, and fossil fuels are a principal source of energy. For example, the consumption of electricity has been increasing at an average annual rate of approximately 8 percent over the last 10 or 1.5 years. Table 1 shows the estimated emission of the principal pollutants into the atmosphere in 1966. The approximately 90 million automobiles, trucks, and buses on American highways contribute the largest proportion of pollutants to the atmosphere, but that fact does not alter the growing problems of the coal industry. You will note that sulfur oxides, particulates, and nitrogen oxides are all products of the combustion of coal. Of these air contaminants, sulfur oxides are now receiving major emphasis in terms of research to develop effective means for control, Table 2 shows that the combustion of coal produces approximately 60 percent of the sulfur oxides discharged to the atmosphere. While the utilization of coal is the principal source of particulate matter, this is not considered as serious a problem as it was in the early part of the century because of technological developments that have produced sound methods for the removal of particulates from waste gas streams.

Ore deposit models are defined largely by physical geologic features that relate conveniently to remote sensing. New Landsat, SPOT, RADARSAT and other multispectral and hyperspectral sensors with improved spatial resolution are currently in development. Near-infrared and thermal airborne hyperspectral scanners hold outstanding promise for both mineral exploration and feasibility stage mapping at potential new mining projects. These scanners are capable of identifying silicification, differentiating silicate alteration types, and mapping compositional variations within igneous and metamorphic complexes. Research in 'mineral and rock spectrometry is helping to advance applications of remote sensing. Hyperspectral scanners are capable of differentiating compositional variations within individual mineral species. Innovative data processing techniques continue to enhance computer software applications and facilitate imagery analysis by the geologist. Today, . remote sensing imagery is commonly integrated with multiple data sets in GIS format to form the core data base for regional exploration programs.

INTRODUCTION During the nineteenth century, the federal mining law was enacted with the objective of promoting the development of the western United States by providing unrestricted access to vast areas of federal land for mineral exploration. Prior to the advent of comprehensive federal, state and local land use plans, there was little, if any, regulation or restriction of mineral exploration activities. Today, the laissez-faire policies of the past that encouraged mineral exploration have gradually given way to the public's legitimate concerns regarding environmental protection, multiple use and planned land development. As a result, the contemporary prospector confronts a maze of statutes, ordinances and regulations with which he must comply to obtain the requisite approvals and permits before commencing mineral exploration on federal, state or private lands. This presentation will provide a broad overview of the exploration permitting process. The first section of this paper recommends certain general management practices to follow when attempting to obtain exploration permits. The second section presents two hypothetical cases, one involving a drilling program on private property in California and the other involving a drilling program and the removal of a bulk sample for metallurgical tests from federal land in Nevada. The cases are used to discuss jurisdictional issues and application of certain federal, state and county laws and regulations that pertain to mineral exploration. The final section contains a brief analysis of three important recent United States Supreme Court decisions. These decisions address the scope of the federal pre-emption doctrine as it applies to activities conducted on unpatented mining claims and the constitutional limits of permissible state and local land use and zoning regulations. PERMITTING PRACTICES The environmental impacts associated with mineral exploration generally result from the construction of drill sites, roads or trenches. Consequently, after the regulatory authority has considered the issues of permissible land use, the primary emphasis of the permitting process is to address problems related to pre-construction site identification and clearance, and post-construction site reclamation. 11.1-FRAGMENTATION PRINCIPLES WARREN W. KRECH Energy must be supplied to rock by direct or indirect means to fragment that rock. The amount is dependent upon the properties of the rock and the type of loading system. Fragmentation energy is consumed by three main mechanisms: (1) creation of new surface area (fracture energy), (2) friction (plasticity) and (3) elastic wave energy dispersion. The loading method determines the relative proportions and the amount of energy consumed in fragmenting a given rock type. Unconfined tensile failure consumes the least energy, with an increasing amount of energy required as the rock is more highly confined within a compressive stress field during fragmentation. The way energy is applied by tools to cause rock or mineral fragmentation is important in determining fragmentation efficiency. Rock-tool interaction should always be controlled to the fullest extent possible to optimize the combination of rate of energy input and fragmentation energy requirements. While the direct cost of energy, (dollars per horsepower-hour) may at first glance appear low relative to other hourly costs, there is a tie between power consumption and other cost factors, such as maintenance and wear. A high rate of energy application utilizing a rock-tool interaction producing only unconfined tensile failure would provide the most efficient fragmentation. No tool that produces a combination of high energy input rate and a loading system that produces failure under only conditions of unconfined tensile load now exists. Present mining methods and tools produce failure under conditions of high compressive confinement, high dispersive energy loss and high frictional energy requirements. Thus, while generally applying energy at high rates, they are highly inefficient with respect to energy consumed in fragmenting rock. To best design fragmentation tools and optimize fragmentation systems it would be desirable to know how rock properties influence breakage. At present, rock properties directly- related to fragmentation are undefined. Although present testing technology- does not permit rigorous definition of in-situ rock fragmentation behavior, several properties (mechanical and physical) commonly are used to indicate the relative case with which rock breaks. The more common test is for uniaxial compressive or tensile strength of cylindrical cores taken from intact portions of the in-situ rock (testing details are provided ill Sec. 6.2, Rock Mechanics). The strength of rock is influenced by the environmental conditions imposed on the rock. Those of most importance in rock are (1) confining pressure. (2) pore fluid pressure, (3) temperature and (4) rate of load application. Increase in confining pressure, as with increasing depth beneath the earth's surface or under the action of a fragmentation tool, causes an increase in rock strength. Increases from atmospheric pressure to 10.000 psi commonly cause up to n fourfold increase in the compressive strength of crystalline rock. Apparent rock strength decreases as pore fluid pressure increases, since it decreases the effect of confining pressure. The effective stress concept of soil mechanics generally applies to rock. Although chemical effects of pore fluids influence rock strength, they geologically are small compared to the confining pressure effect, except for a small minority of rock types. With the advent of acid rain legislation included within the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, a great deal of uncertainty with regard to price, source and production quantities has been cast into the coal market. Powder River Basin and other western coals continue a rapidly accelerating migration eastward, South American coals move into the northern markets, states propose legislation to assist utilities in complying with the new regulations in hopes of maintaining their own coal industries, while some utilities question the long term availability of eastern compliance coal. Any major coal producer must make decisions now to assure their continuing presence in the market place; several companies have adopted a strategy to acquire eastern compliance reserves while others have invested in technology to compete as a low cost producer. This paper discusses some of these options in light of the uncertainties of the market place, from an eastern coal producer?s viewpoint.

Introduction An examination of statistics for the world phosphate fertilizer industry since 1980 reveals that there is an increasing tendency for fertilizer-manufacturing activity to concentrate in the areas of phosphate-rock mining. The economic justification for this resource-oriented strategy is clear. The choice between shipping phosphate rock, a comparatively low-value product, and shipping a more valuable finished fertilizer product will always, as long as cost considerations control the decision, be resolved in favor of the latter. The historical existence of substantial phosphate fertilizer-manufacturing capacity, which is oriented toward fertilizer-consuming activities and dependent on imported phosphate rock, shows that narrow cost considerations have not always determined the industry's location. One is entitled to ask what conditions have changed to precipitate the observed relocations, and how permanent are these changes. These questions are the subject of this investigation. Recent trends in world phosphate trade Since 1980, the changing pattern of world trade in phosphate materials reflects an increased interest in manufacturing phosphate fertilizer in rock-producing areas. This is shown by the decline in the total tonnage of phosphate rock being traded worldwide compared to world consumption of phosphate fertilizers (Fig. 1). This relative decline has continued since 1984, which is a longer period of time than could be explained by temporary cyclical market factors. Other evidence corroborates this conclusion. The world's phosphate-rock production is relatively concentrated geographically. In 1992, the top ten producing countries accounted for 92% of world production. Figure 2 shows that the share of world fertilizer production in the top ten rock producers has increased. Yet, further evidence of the direction of trade changes can be had by looking at the pattern of the world's sulfur trade. The first step in the manufacture of any of the widely used phosphate fertilizer products is the acidulation of phosphate rock with sulfuric acid. In most instances, phosphate fertilizer producers have found it economical to produce their own sulfuric acid by burning elemental sulfur, and such operations account for over 60% of all sulfur consumption in the world. 1 Therefore, a concentration of phosphate fertilizer production in rock-producing countries should produce a similar concentration of sulfur imports in the same countries. Figure 3 suggests that there has been a tendency since 1989 for sulfur exports to go increasingly to the rockproducing countries. World phosphate-location strategy is not limited to the alternatives of shipping rock and shipping finished fertilizers. A third alternative consists of producing phosphoric acid, the principal phosphate fertilizer intermediate, at the rock deposit, and then exporting it to market-oriented ammonium phosphate plants. This arrangement offers the importing country the advantages of shipping a more concentrated product while retaining the economic multiplier benefits of a domestic high-analysis fertilizer industry. India, and several other countries, imports merchant-grade phosphoric acid to use as input for the domestic value-added fertilizer industries. For various reasons, the trade in phosphoric acid has never quite lived up to the promise suggested by the foregoing discussion. Figure 4 shows no growth in this trade in the last ten years, either in absolute terms or in relation to the world's consumption of phosphoric acid. Most of the decline in the trade in phosphorous in rock form has been replaced with trade in finished fertilizers. The trade in superphosphoric acid was a growth activity in the late 1970s with the growth in US exports to the USSR, and this trade survived the Carter-era embargoes of US-Soviet trade. However, no additional sizable markets for superphosphoric acid developed, and other suppliers sought out the Soviet market. The problem with superphosphoric acid is that the cost of its incremental concentration is as great as the savings from shipping the more concentrated product. The Soviet market was a special case. The political breakup of the Soviet Union disrupted the superphosphoric acid trade after 1991 and led to a shutdown of the US export capacity.

Caterpillar recently held two, two-day demonstration programs for its mining customers. The event, billed as MineDemo by Caterpillar, consisted of two sessions held on consecutive weeks at the company's Tinaja Hills proving ground south of Tucson, AZ. The program included several classroom sessions that focused on Caterpillar equipment applications, including the VIMS (vital information management system) and the CAES (computer-aided earthmoving system). Also included were field demonstrations and the opportunity to test drive mining-related heavy equipment, including dozers, trucks, graders, shovels and loaders. Featured at the event were the recently upgraded 785, 789 and 793 C-Series trucks. Caterpillar recently announced the availability of the 136-t (150-st) 785C and the 177-t (195-st) 789C. The upgraded haulers have replaced the respective B-Series models. The 218-t (240-st) 793C was introduced in 1996. It, too, has been upgraded but retains the C-Series designation. While attending the press event, the author had the opportunity to test drive the 793C at the Tinaja Hills test site. It was amazing how well the machine handled. The operation was smooth and the braking system was precise. The cab was extremely comfortable. To see a C-Series truck in action, the author also visited Newmont Mining's Mesquite Mine, located in Cali¬fornia, across the border from Yuma, AZ. The Mesquite Mine operates a new model 785C truck. At the mine, temperatures have been measured as high as 58° C (138° F) in the pit. Needless to say, the ability to operate dependably in extreme heat is an important consideration for the mine operators. An interview with the driver and later with management confirmed that the 785C has worked out well. The driver praised the comfort of the cab and the ease of operation. Management reported significant fuel savings and was impressed by the truck's maintenance features.

"The need to fill the void space or annulus created between an excavated tunnel or shaft and the final lining system has long been a requirement in underground construction. Most of those types of voids are created as a result of employing the two pass tunneling lining method. Filling of this void is called backfilling. For many years the materials used as backfill were primarily reinforced and non-reinforced concrete, sanded grout, neat cement grout, or blown-in sand/pea gravel. However, in the past 20 years the use of cellular grouts/cellular concrete as the backfill material has greatly increased. Most cellular grout is made of a mixture of water, Portland cement (with or without the addition of fly ash), a foaming agent and admixtures such as a water-reducer or superplasticizer.It is the authors’ preference to use the term cellular grout as opposed to cellular concrete since by ACI Concrete Terminology an ACI Standard (ACI CT 13), concrete contains aggregates. Normally cellular grout does not contain sand (finite aggregate), but almost never contain course aggregates.The authors believe there are several reasons for this increased use of cellular grout as backfill, such as:• The increase utilization of the various trenchless tunneling methods. Tunnels constructed using trenchless method tend to be smaller in size, excavated diameter or cross sectional area. Making man-entry for placing backfill from inside the secondary liner, utilizing pre-installed grout posts, more difficult if not impossible. It is these workspace restrictions that are the drivers as to when to utilize grout ports installed during the pipe/liner fabrication versus grout delivery pipes installed within the void/annulus space.• The ability of cellular backfills to be pumped and flow longer distances.• The unit weight of cellular grouts can be controlled by mix design and generally can range from 560 Kg/m3 (35 lbs/CF) to 1040 Kg/m3 (65 lbs/CF)."

This paper presents a kinematic approach for blast modeling with examples of blast models that were developed previously. A kinematic approach was applied successfully in developing blasting models that can simulate all blast design parameters for field applications. Several applied blasting models have been developed and applied widely in the world. A kinematic approach to blast modeling refers to using measurements of kinematic quantities such as the velocity, strain, or displacement and well-established assumptions to model blasting phenomena, rather than being restricted to use first principal of physics, such as, the stress- and material-constitutive relations. The kinematic quantities are easy to measure in the field. Due to the complexity and inhomogeneity of rock mass properties, using first principles of physics, many parameters of rock and explosive properties must be involved, which are hard or impossible to quantify. This creates a major impediment when trying to simulate the total process of blasting based upon first principles of physics. The 3D kinematic model for muckpile formation was developed and applied to open pit blasts. The multiple blasthole fragmentation model developed during recent years has been applied successfully to many mine sites around the globe. These models are typical examples of blast modeling using the kinematic approach, which enables the models to catch major trends of the blasting process and explicitly simulate full blast design parameters and complex geometries. Blast modeling using the kinematic approach results in easy model calibration and validation against field measurements and effective applications to practical problems. Using kinematic models of the muckpile formation and the multiple blasthole fragmentation model, this paper demonstrates the merits of the kinematic approach for blast modeling. New developments of the models were also presented in the paper, which illustrate the potential of the kinematic modelling approach.

In October, November and December, teachers at the National Science Teachers' Association (NSTA) area conventions were lured to visit the Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) booth by the promise of free rocks, video tapes, and literature on earth science topics. Teachers were content to stand in lines that at times took as much as an hour and a half to progress through the exhibit. Adding to their interest was the opportunity to converse with people from the minerals industry who were staffing the booth. The MEC was formed by a group of associations and companies in the minerals industry. They felt the need to educate the public about the current-day minerals industry and how it affects everyone's life. The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc. (AIME) underwrote the major expenses of exhibit space and exhibitor services at all three conventions in 1997. SME members have been active in staffing and chairing the NSTA exhibit booth. But they represented only about one-third of the volunteers for the booth. Additional volunteers were drawn from local minerals companies, associations, interested teachers and other support groups. (See donors list on page 64.) In 1997, the conventions were held in Pittsburgh, PA, Denver, CO and Nashville, TN. The local SME GEM Committees chaired Pittsburgh and Denver and The Rogers Group Inc. supplied the chairperson in Nashville. Each exhibit relies on a local committee to plan and run the booth. Support is available from the GEM Projects Coordinator at SME headquarters. Usually the chair of the committee is drawn from the local SME membership. It is easy to see why the MEC booth is so popular. Free literature, videos, posters, workshop packets and rock specimens were handed out to about 5,500 science teachers at the three sites. Feedback from the attending teachers was overwhelmingly positive: "Who do we thank for these great materials?" Some of those great materials included Caterpillar's outstanding donation of Common Ground videos and teacher packets for Pittsburgh, Denver and Nashville for every teacher expected to attend. Placer Dome sent enough What's a Mine coloring books and It Comes from a Mine activity books for teachers at all three sites. Newmont supplied all teachers with an excellent poster describing gold processing. Women in Mining Education Foundation had plenty of its classroom activity handouts. The American Coal Foundation provided a list of its educational materials that are given out free to teachers who request them on school letterhead. The National Mining Association had its Facts About Minerals and Facts About Coal available. US Borax provided the funding to reproduce the NMA black and white posters that were published as inserts in Mining Voice magazine. In addition, each site had other materials chosen by the local committees to round out their selections. At each exhibit site, committees raise between $8,000 and $12,000 in cash donations from industry to support the high overhead of producing this exhibit. Usually, there are between 12 and 18 different rock specimens representing a range of mineral ores from aggregates to the metal ores. The committee arranged to have these donated (along with the freight charges to ship them to the site). Literature is also donated by the industry. It covers a diverse spectrum from basic information on rocks and minerals to posters, flow charts, videos and coloring books. Other donations include storage space before the event, haulage of items to the hall and door prizes. These exhibits could not have been staged without the network of SME Local Sections and the able chairs and committees at each site. At this time, credit should be given to their extensive donation of time and effort.

Representative samples of a composite mixture of three typical Cu/Zn complex sulphide ores, namely Black-, Yellow- and Altered-ore, from the Cayeli deposit in Turkey, were used for leaching tests in 2.2 M FeCl3, or 1 M CuC12-2 M NaCl solution in the temperature range from 313 K to 363 K (40O to 90O C), with and without the presence of an organic solvent for elemental sulphur, such as CCl4. The leaching rates of copper and zinc were quite high, as expected, in FeCl3 solution and complete recovery of both metals was obtained at the highest temperature when the solvent was present. However in CuC1, solution, extraction yields of the order of 95% only for Cu and Zn were achieved and the positive effect of the solvent was not clearly shown. The kinetics curves of Cu leaching by FeCl3 indicated a model of reaction rate depending on the particle surface, as in a chemically controlled reaction, in tests with the presence of CCl4. Without the solvent, or in CuCl2 media, the model of the diffusion controlled reaction seemed to prevail. Values of apparent activation energy, in both of the leaching processes, were determined and compared with those reported in literature.

Most bituminous coal mined near Eastern industrial areas requiring high Btu pipeline gas is caking and therefore unsuitable for fixed-bed pressure gasification by present techniques. If the caking property of such coal can be destroyed the resulting fuel can be gasified in a fixed bed at pressure with steam and oxygen as a preliminary step in making a high-Btu gas. To find a practical way to convert strongly caking coals of granular or small lump size to noncaking fuel was the object of this study. In previous work strongly caking coals of 1/8- to 1-1/2-inch size was converted to a noncaking coal char by treatment in a static bed in about 3 hours [1/]and coal of 18-100 Tyler mesh in a fluidized bed in about 5 minutes.[2/] An inert gas such as `steam, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or a mixture of all three with a small amount of oxygen was used in both studies. In our work a strongly caking bituminous coal from the Pittsburgh seam of 4-8 Tyler mesh size was converted to a-noncaking form in free-fall in about 2 seconds by dropping it through a countercurrent flow of steam containing 4 to 7 percent oxygen at 1,150°-1,200° F and 300 psig. This method should also be applicable to smaller-sized material.
