Most fatalities in tunnel fires are caused by the spread of toxic smoke. Controlling the spread of smoke is crucial to provide a survivable environment for emergency egress. A properly designed and tuned feedback control loop is required to achieve a target flow that is slow enough to allow pedestrians to escape under different boundary conditions. Feedback control loops are also helpful in optimizing energy consumption under moving traffic conditions. A reliable feedback flow control system requires sophisticated engineering knowhow and experience, careful selection of instruments and controlled variables, and thoughtful implementation from design through field testing and commissioning.

Estimates of the cost of producing any commodity generally fall into several classes depending upon the motives and needs of the estimator. There are estimates intended to show how low costs might be with favorable conditions if everything goes well. At the other extreme, there are estimates which show how high costs might be if troubles develop. The estimates in this paper for the cost of producing direct reduced iron (DRI) are accompanied by discussion to point out how the final figures may be adjusted in either a promotional or a conservative direction. Because we do not have a specific process and a particular set of conditions in mind when discussing this subject today, this paper deals with the general situation, with considerable attention to how the estimates can be made more specific once one knows the particulars of a given situation.

"The Station “C13” of Warsaw Underground Line II, with tunnel crown 10m below the water table, required the excavation of three connection tunnels, underpassing a six-lane in service road tunnel, working from two lateral shafts. After the collapse occurred while digging the first tunnel, the use of artificial ground freezing was chosen to ensure the excavation under safe conditions. A complex freezing pipe geometry and excavation sequencing was necessary because of the interferences of the overlying road tunnel diaphragm wall foundations, shaft internal structures and previous grouting activities. A combined freezing method was used: nitrogen for freezing the tunnel arches, brine for freezing the intermediate wall and for maintenance stages. Sandy and silty sandy layers were frozen around the crowns and sides. No treatment was necessary for the inverts, lying in clay. A monitoring system of ground temperatures and structure movements allowed for successful completion of work in 8 months. INTRODUCTION The C13 Station of the Warsaw Underground-Line II is located on the West bank of the Vistula River. It consists of two shafts and three connecting tunnels, passing under the Wislostrada (WS) Road tunnel. According to the initial geotechnical investigation, tunnels should have been excavated in high-plasticity clay, but during the first borings non cohesive soil was encountered. Additional investigations were performed on both shafts and a more detailed stratigraphy was reconstructed (Lombardi et al. 2015). Layers of fine sand, sandy silt and sandy silty clay were present along the tunnels crown arches and in the North East tunnel they extended down to the centre line (-13.735m above the Vistula River medium level). Based on the new stratigraphy, it was decided to stabilize the crown and control the groundwater inflow from the face with jet-grouting columns extending the treatment down to the clayey soil, but a collapse occurred in the North West tunnel with soil and water inflow inside the shaft."

Electronic systems have been increasingly used in underground mines to improve mine safety. These electronic systems emit electromagnetic (EM) energy which can adversely impact the performance of other electronic systems nearby and thus should be characterized. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterized the magnetic fields emitted from devices that can potentially interfere with the performance of proximity detection systems (PDSs) and compared the emission levels of these devices to the susceptibility of PDSs. In this paper, we present our measurement results pertaining to this effort. Particularly, magnetic fields emitted from the different orientations of a powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) and two lite trackers are evaluated based on the RE101 protocol specified in the MIL-STD-461G standard. The results show that both devices emit strong magnetic fields which strongly depend on the orientation of the devices. At some frequencies, the maximum emission levels from the two devices exceed both the emission limit given in MIL-STD-461G and the maximum magnetic fields that a PDS can withstand without a failure. The results and findings in this paper can help the mining industry better understand electromagnetic interference (EMI) underground and provide critical scientific data that support mining-specific recommendations to address EMI-related challenges.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3000 cfm (1.42 m3 /s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3 /s).

In 1971, the Minerals Division of The Superior Oil Company acquired exploration rights to an unpatented claim group in the Superior (Pioneer), Arizona mining district, lying west of the Concentrator fault. This major post-mineral fault displaces the Magma vein-fault, which is mined in the Magma Mine at Superior, Arizona. The Magma vein-fault and the enclosing section of pre-mineral rocks consisting of Paleozoic and younger Precambrian sediments and diabase, is overlain by a thick section of post-mineral rocks, consisting of the Gila conglomerate, the Apache Leap dacite, and the Whitetail conglomerate. Geologic information on the thickness and attitudes of the rocks obtained from previous diamond drilling indicated that the section of post-mineral rocks might be from 3,000 to over 4,010 feet thick in the target area. (Figure 1) The Magma vein-fault is a steeply dipping vein which has produced nearly a billion dollars of copper, zinc, silver, and gold. It has been mined continuously for nearly 10,000 feet along the strike and nearly 5,000, feet vertically down the dip. It ranges from less than a foot to over 50 feet wide and contains sulfide mineralization con¬sisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and chalcocite.

INTRODUCTION The problems involved with moving millions of tons of rock are being addressed by nationally recognized tunnel contractors who have converged in Chicago over the past 5 years. This wealth of expertise has been needed to meet the risk and challenge of constructing the world's largest network of underground tunnels which in turn has required a dramatic advance in the art and science of tunneling. These pioneers, through innovation, adaptation, and hard work, have eliminated the one major concern of The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago - how to move 8 million tons of rock. The Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) serves 122 municipalities covering 866 square miles in Cook County, Illinois. Of these cities, towns, and villages, 53 have combined sewer systems. On an average of once every four days, these systems overflow about 4 million gallons of combined sewage and rainwater into the area's rivers and canals. The overflows occur at approximately 640 outfall locations of which 10% are owned by the MSDGC, with the remainder of the points belonging to various other municipal bodies. All those who own these "point" sources of pollution are in violation of Illinois State and Federal regulations. To enable its member municipalities to come into compliance with State and Federal law, the MSDGC is implementing its Tunnel And Reservoir Plan (TARP). TARP is a regional solution to the problem of combined sewer overflow in the metropolitan Chicago area. "Within underground portions of metro rail networks the traditional approach to a design fire has been to assume a worst credible railcar fire and develop ventilation and egress measures for life safety. This approach is being challenged as a rail network approach to design fires becomes a more practical and realistic approach. The network approach is based on utilizing an in-depth hazard analysis, to understand ignition and fire load sources in tunnels, above and below the floor of the railcar and within stations, and then utilizing a quantitative risk assessment to determine sets of fire scenarios. The process allows small, medium and large fires to be considered, with the consequences also being quantified. The selection of design fires has a significant influence on fire protection measures within a metro network and hence, is a major cost input. The rail network approach provides more robust decisions on fires, based on the hazards present. INTRODUCTION A fire within a rail car or one that occurs as part of a rail system can threaten the lives of users, maintenance staff and emergency services personnel. Fires in metro systems are rare events but can have severe consequences. As a result, any analysis of a potential fire must be thorough and rigorous and address not only regular accidents and small fires, but also very low probability, high consequence scenarios. The fire safety design process for a tunnel and station must start with the design engineers, contractor and operators making a number of key decisions related to fire protection measures, which may have significant cost considerations. One of the key aspects that influences the required fire protection is the design fire and the design fire scenarios, which is a key input for analysis. This paper provides an overview of the author’s experience in designing fire protection measures for rail networks in Europe, Australia and NZ, where a risk based framework is used to develop design fires and scenarios for the whole rail system – trains, stations and tunnels. This system wide approach is innovative, challenges the norms, but provides significantly more informed outcomes. The range of design fires will include small fires that may halt the network, larger fires for smoke hazard system design and significant post-flashover fires to assess the structural response."

The Berkeley Pit of The Anaconda Company is located on the southeast slope of the Butte Hill, the legendary "Richest Hill on Earth," and is one of the largest pit operations in the world completely dependent on truck haulage. Through October 31, 1968, the Berkeley stripping and mining operations have moved more than 442,589,000 tons of material. Present scheduled production is at the rate of 260,000 tons per day, with a record quantity of 306,900 tons having been hauled on September 23, 1968. Although the Berkeley Pit has been in production only a little more than ten years, it has been the proving ground for many of the presently used large trucks. Beginning with the original R. G. LeTourneau 75-ton electric truck in 1960, Unit Rig 85- and 100-ton electric drives, Haulpak 65- and 105-ton electric drives, and Caterpillar 100-ton electric drives have all been tested under production conditions. In addition, engine development has kept pace with both 1000-hp diesel and 1100-hp gas turbine engines now under test. As the size of the Berkeley operation has grown, the truck fleet has changed in size and appearance in order to maintain economic mining costs. The original fleet consisted of forty-three 36-ton trucks with conventional mechanical drives. The present fleet is made up of eighty-nine trucks: nineteen 85-ton Unit Rig electrics with 700-hp diesel engines; sixty-nine 100-ton Unit Rig electrics with either 700- or 1000-hp diesel engines; and one 100-ton Unit Rig electric with an 1100-hp gas turbine engine.

The ( ) Tayaaja ( ) . The deposit ( ) 130 kilometers due east of the continental divide and approximately 290 kilometers east-southeast of Lima (Figure 1). Relief in the immediate vicinity of the mine, which lies or the west side of the Mantaro river, is in excess of 2,000 meters, and the elevation varies from a low of 2,000 meters above sea level on the Mantaro River to a high of 4,386 meters at point T-27 (Figure 2). Although the Cobriza deposit was first reported by the Italian Geographer Antonio Raimondi in 1866, only three reports have been published on the deposit, which began production in 1966 (Duefias, 1908; Fernandez Concha and Garcia y Garcia, 1961; Petersen. 1965). Many private reports have, however, been written by geologists employed by the Cerro de Pasco Corporation. These reports and the author's observations, while employed as the Cobriza Division Mine Geologists form the basis of the present paper, which describes the relations between-the ore controls in the Cobriza mine and the regional and local structure.

The Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming and southcentral Montana contains the largest strip minable reserve of compliance coal (0.27 kg or 0.6 or less Ibs of sulfur per million Btu) in the United States. In mining parlance, it is the mother lode. Wyoming's portion of the Basin is called the Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB). It has been the nation's top coal producer for the past nine years. And based on 1997 production statistics and estimated strippable compliance coal reserves, Wyoming should remain the nation's top producer for the next 51 plus years. In August 1994, ME featured 10 articles that covered all aspects of coal production in the SPRB. In this issue, five authors update the 1994 articles and provide a pre- diction of what the Basin will look like at the turn of the century. A unit for separating minerals into two prescribed size fractions, designated as a Lewis Hydrosizer, was developed at the North Carolina State University Minerals Research Laboratory. Ore samples with different mineral compositions, including coal, were separated effectively with the laboratory continuous unit. Commercial size units are in operation in North Carolina and Mexico, and under construction in Norway. Additional units are being build or are in the planning stage at several companies.

Mining accidents due to inrushing water are caused by sudden changes in seepage owing to structural damage to key strata of the aquiclude. The backfill mining method can be used to control the movement of the strata, weaken the evolution of fractures owing to damage by key aquiclude strata (KAS), and control the channel for inrushing water. This study develops a mechanical model of a composite beam on a non-uniform elastic foundation of the KAS by analyzing the coupling relationship between the filling body and the key water-resisting layer of the aquiclude. Equations of the deflection-induced deformation, bending moment, and maximum tensile stress of the KAS are analyzed, formulae to calculate the allowable tensile stress and backfill materials’ compaction ratio (BMCR) to ensure structural stability are derived, and are used to provide the critical BMCR for their structural instability. The results of field measurements show that the subsidence of the roof was 600–700 mm with an average BMCR of 80.63%. Damage to the overlying strata was controlled to ensure safe mining and the disposal of solid waste from the aquifer. The research here is useful for ensuring safety during mining while protecting water resources.

Results are presented for the first phase of an experimental program to study the feasibility of using acoustic velocity for predicting the state of stress in a rock mass. Compressional wave velocities were determined axially in cylindrical samples during uniaxial compression for several rock types conditioned in dry and water-saturated environments. Results indicate that in rocks containing compressible voids or cracks, substantial velocity change occurs with the application of stress in the lower (below 100 MPa) stress regime. The effect norm- ally is nonlinear, however, and diminishes to asymptotic values when cracks or voids become closed or with saturation. Empirical prediction equations were derived for each rock type by linear and nonlinear regression analyses, and correlation coefficients were calculated to determine the equations that best fit the stress- velocity data. The operational range for predicting stress using compressional-wave velocity appears to be within the range of vertical stress expected in most shallow to intermediate depth mining operations (less than 1,000 m). Based on the experimental results to date and theoretical considerations, it appears that the technology can be advanced to predict in situ stress based on acoustic P-wave velocity determinations in most mining situations.

In the 1980's the Canadian surface mining industry was confronted by declining competitiveness in the face of low cost foreign producers and alternative materials. Low metal prices undermined profits for many mining companies. Restructuring, rationalization, capacity reduction, technology transfer, as well as favourable currency rates and higher commodity prices, helped revitalize the industry by the close of the decade. Now in the 1990's, however, the need to improve competitiveness for profitability has re-emerged in greater intensity. In the current climate it is considered that there are three strategies available to industry to ensure profitability: continued rationalization and restructuring; optimization of operating practice; and technology development and transfer.

European Union's transition to a low-carbon and digital economy highly depends on securing the strategic autonomy of the Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) supply chain. This paper introduces a European Commission-funded research and innovation action, AGEMERA, which aims to create detailed geological and people's concerns maps to unlock the CRMs potential in Europe. Furthermore, the project will develop educational packages for schools and universities, publish online CRM-related games and news flashes, and arrange public events to ensure a basis for socially accepted and sustainable exploration and mining of CRMs in Europe. 1. IntroductionCritical Raw Materials (CRMs), crucial for shifting to a low-carbon and digital economy, should focus on maintaining Europe's overall supply-demand balance (Birol, 2022). Therefore, to proactively address the surge in demand and ensure the strategic autonomy of European industrial supply chains, the exploration and extraction of CRMs must be scaled out across the continent. Moreover, mobilizing Europe's domestic potential is vital for the EU to become more resilient and to establish open strategic autonomy as the demand for CRMs continues to increase quickly on a global scale (European Commission, 2021). Base metal extraction and mining have a long history in Europe. Nevertheless, CRMs mining projects have shown less success, although these have a lot of potential (Guzik et al., 2021). The main barriers are a lack of investment in mining and exploration, complicated and drawn-out national permitting processes, and low levels of public support (European Commission, 2020). It is necessary to have a vast amount of knowledge and intelligence about CRM's potential and market impact. Novel non-invasive geophysical survey techniques that enable sustainable exploration must be created and used to enhance mineral system models of ore deposits incorporating CRMs. The minerals policy framework significantly influences the mining industry's performance, stability, and sustainability. However, the EU Member States' mineral policy frameworks differ significantly (MINLEX, 2017). In addition, the Fraser Institute Annual Survey of Mining Companies offers concrete information on how managers and executives of mining companies view key policy areas that impact mining activities in the jurisdiction in which they operate or are familiar (Jackson & Green, 2015).

The Nevada Test Site is located approximately 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NY. The site was primarily used by the Department of Energy for the field testing of nuclear weapons and contaminated by several million cubic feet of low-level radioactive wastes, heavy metals, volatile and non-volatile organics, and explosive materials. Leaching and transportation of these contaminants are creating severe environmental problems. The purpose of this study is to examine pozzolan, a natural alumina-silicate mineral, as a possible replacement of the existing impermeable barriers (clays). In the first phase of this study, radionuclide sorption characteristics of pozzolan were investigated. This paper will present the results of the sorption tests for the target radionuclides.

Economic and at the same time environmentally acceptable mining of small vertical ore bodies and veins to great depths has always been a challenge for miners. The Bauer cutter system, widely used in civil engineering, has been further developed for applications in exploration and mining, to a sustainable system for selective mining with a focus on small vertical ore bodies and veins, as well as residual ore in open pit operations. Current situation of conventional mining of small ore bodies and vertical veins Small ore bodies and vertical or near-vertical ore veins often pose a challenge to the mining industry. The relatively small size of the ore deposit over great depths or lengths, with only limited exposure to the surface makes economical mining difficult. Open pit mining of such ore bodies must either be terminated early because of the high stripping ratio and the enormous environmental impact or is unprofitable from the very beginning. The required massive stripping of waste rock leads to high material hauling times and costs, intensive roadway and bench construction and maintenance, possible safety hazards due to heavy vehicle movement, pit wall stability risks, intensive surface water management and massive waste dump requirements. In addition, it can be assumed that increasingly extensive rehabilitation measures will be required in the future after mine closure. Particularly in vertically oriented magmatic and hydrothermal deposits the technical, economic and environmental limits for further pushbacks, to extend the open pit depth, can lead to an early end of mine life even if a significant quantity of residual ore is left behind. Going underground is only a viable option in a limited number of mines with very high ore values and volumes. The high development cost of an underground mine, as well as the higher underground mining costs, often prevent further mining to greater depths.

December 3, 1972, James Wm. White presented the results of an instrumentation and process control survey which was sponsored by the Anaconda Company at the annual Tucson Subsection AIME meeting.(1) Twenty-six responses were obtained from questionnaires sent to 48 operating plants throughout the world. The survey results were discouraging in that there were more failures and problems than examples of success. The following quotes are taken from the text of the paper. "We run our mill by the seat of our pants." 'If these blue sky Ph.D.'s (in the instruments and controls area within research) had some operating experience they wouldn't make a lot of the suggestions they do."

A field inventory was made of the mineral, geologic, geothermal, and groundwater resources of three geologically recent lava fields in the desert of Oregon. The term "resource" was applied with care: a "resource" must have particular value or worth, although it need not be economically viable. The spectacular volcanic features of the area have particular scientific and general interest and thus constitute geologic resources. The mineral endowment, mostly occurrences of low unit value such as stone and cinders, in large part are not resources, due to market conditions, regulations, and other factors. These and other conclusions will be used by the Bureau of Land Management in its multiple land use planning process for the area.
