Continuous processing plants handling liquids have achieved a high degree of centralized automatic control. Many chemical plants are operated from one room, with automatic control of the various process flow rates. These plants know from experience that automatic control can produce higher through-put, better uniformity of product, decreased operating costs and reduction of storage capacity, Plants which process materials in the form of bulk solids have not been able to use control to as great an extent, primarily due to the lack of measuring equipment capable of providing the same types of continuous automatic control available with liquid flow meters. This paper will describe a scale for measuring flows of bulk materials on conveyor belts which is particularly adaptable to remote centralized instrumentation and automatic control, and will also describe some typical control applications. Fig. 1 illustrates the basic method of measurement of this scale. A conveyor belt idler is supported on a rigid carriage which in turn is mounted in two anti- friction bearings on the conveyor stringers. The pivoted carriage is prevented from rotating about the pivot shaft by an electric strain gauge load cell connected between the carriage and a cross support. Increasing load on the conveyor belt increases the moment of the carriage frame about the pivot shaft, and proportionally increases the tension in the load cell. The belt speed is measured by a conventional d. c. tachometer generator driven from a pulley, usually on the return belt. The speed signal from the tachometer generator and the load signal from the load cell are combined to produce a signal proportional to the flow rate of material in tons per hour, or lbs. per foot, or equivalent units, It will be important to remember, in considering various control applications, that the flow rate of material on the belt is composed of these two component signals, namely the weight of material and the speed at which it is moving. The feed rate is then indicated and recorded by a self-balancing potentiometer of the type used for measuring temperature by means of thermocouples. These instruments may also be equipped with integrating mechanisms reading the totalized tonnage over a period of time.

Room-and-pillar mining in multi-level underground stone mines come with unique pillar stability issues. The pillar stability in these mines primarily depends on the thickness of interburden between mining levels and the staggering of pillars. NIOSH has previously established pillar design guidelines for shallow, flat-lying mines and single-level operations, but there is little guidance for ground control design in multiple-level stone mines. Therefore, to improve the overall understanding of ground control in these mines, a microseismic monitoring system has been installed at a multi-level underground stone mine in Tennessee with up to a 243-m overburden and a 7-m interburden thickness between levels. The microseismic system is comprised of nine uniaxial accelerometers and one triaxial accelerometer installed in the interburden. The seismic array is locally focused with all sensors installed within a 625 m2 area and is setup to monitor the seismicity around the formation of the pillar in the lower mining level. Data is collected over 11 months and comprises of over 1,000 high-confidence events that have been located in the study area comprised of post-blast activity. The event locations were identified using a 3D-velocity model, with an average 4-m location accuracy for this array calculated using the system data. Most observed seismicity was on the excavation boundary, both in the interburden and in the roof of the top level. At this stage of analysis, there are no significant rock failures with which to correlate seismicity, but event locations correlate well with presumed damage in the vicinity of blasts.

This paper presents a 20-year global account of tunneling in gassy ground demonstrating high probability of schedule delays, cost overruns, worker injuries and fatalities. Causes of these failures are systemic. Gas is seldom characterized in terms relevant to design of effective ventilation systems. Control measures deployed in tunnels are often based on outdated industrial safety codes. A change in approach is needed. This paper describes how to perform a desk study to determine if field investigation for gas is warranted, and lists the content of an effective characterization of gas in a geotechnical report.

The Robe River Iron Ore Project began in 1962 when Cliffs International acquired mining leases in Western Australia's Pilbara Region. Initial reserves were proven and bulk ore samples sent to the U.S.A. for pilot plant testwork. Cliffs Western Australian Mining Company Pty. Limited (30%) manages the project in joint venture with Mitsui Iron Ore Development Pty. Limited (30%), Robe River Limited (35%) and Cape Lambert Iron Associates (5%).

The Monsanto Company's Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto's three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, 'forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system. "A fundamental understanding of flame propagation characteristics through and around obstacles is needed to accurately model methane driven longwall coal mine explosions originating or propagating in the gob. Experimental investigations of methane flames in horizontal cylindrical reactors with simulated gob (i.e. rock piles) were carried out alongside coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and combustion simulations. Stoichiometric methane-air mixtures were ignited in semi-open reactor vessels of 5cm, 9.5cm and 71cm diameter, all with a fixed length to diameter (L/D) ratio of 8.6. This was done both with empty reactors and also with a rock pile placed at the open end of the reactor. The rock pile length to reactor length ratio was fixed at 0.3, and the rock pile height to reactor diameter ratio was fixed at 0.33 for all reactors. The smaller two reactor experiments were modeled with ANSYS Fluent in 2D. Experimental results indicate that for this geometry a similar acceleration mode occurs across scales: that the flame speeds up an average of 40% as it passes over a rock pile with this profile. The model is able to capture several important features of the experimental results, including the significant increase in velocity, the speedup ahead of the rock pile, and the leveling off of the empty tube flame front propagation velocity. INTRODUCTION Explosions in underground coal mines are among the largest industrial explosions, known to result in the rapid combustion of 20m3 of fuel gas or more [1,2] Coal beds hold methane gas under pressure, and when the pressure is relieved through mining activity some of this methane is released. The methane then mixes with ventilation air and, if not sufficiently diluted, may form a combustible mixture, which may result in an explosion. Several large coal mine explosions have occurred around the world recently. These include the 2014 Soma Mine disaster in Turkey that killed 301 people [3], and the 2009 Heilongjiang Mine explosion in China that killed 108 [4]. Other recent mine explosions, including the 2010 disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine that caused 29 fatalities [5], have demonstrated that explosive gases can accumulate and ignite within and around the gob area of a longwall coal mine and then expand into the active mining face and nearby areas, endangering workers and equipment. If enough combustible gas is involved, the initial flame can accelerate, eventually transitioning from deflagration to detonation [6]. Researchers are developing a fundamental understanding of the evolution of the explosion process from the laminar kernel to the fully turbulent regime, and its propagation through obstacles such as those found in the gob. Researchers also studied the initial development of methane flames and the potential for the development of a detonation."

Armine Frederick Ban?eld Jr., past chairman and founder of Mintec, Inc. located in Tucson, AZ, will be honored as the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee at the awards banquet. Banfield founded Mintec from his Tucson apartment in 1970 and expanded it to a global operation. Under his guidance, Mintec won the 2013 President?s E-Award for Exports ? the highest recognition any United States company may receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. The Musaimeer pump station and outfall project located in Doha Qatar, was designed to collect and manage ground and stormwater and then discharge the treated waters offshore. The project constructed a long outfall tunnel using an EPB TBM with segmental lining, each tunnel ring being 1.35 m in length with an internal diameter of 3.7 m.. The diffuser structure was a 6-arm structure, measuring 294m by 40 m connected to a central manifold in turn connected to the TBM constructed tunnel via a riser shaft drilled from an off-shore barge. This technical paper will discuss the planning, methodology and construction practices employed to connect the TBM tunnel to the diffuser structure 10.2 km offshore.

A preliminary model has been developed for autogenous pebble milling using information obtained from studies on ball milling and SAG milling. The model treats the breakage as the weighted sum of first-order breakage of smaller particles by tumbling pebbles, non-first order breakage of larger particles which are too large to be nipped properly by pebbles, autogenouS fracture and chipping of larger lumps to form pebbles, and autogenous fracture and abrasion of pebbles. The model includes the effects of residence time distribution, classification through the exit grate, and a mass transfer relation which describes the accumulation of fine material in the mill. Example simulations are given, based on breakage parameters determined from batch grinding tests in laboratory mills. fracture breakage and abrasion. In the development of these preliminary mass balance equations it will be assumed that breakage by fracture is first-order, but this assumption will be modified later in the paper. It will also be assumed that the residence time distribution of a long autogenous mill can be described by an equivalent series of m fully-mixed mills, with a classification action imposed on the mill contents by the discharge grate. Size distributions are expressed as a v2 geometric series, numbered 1 for the top size down to n for the fines, or "sink" interval. If the holdup in the mill is W then the rate of breakage of material in size interval i is given by SiwiW, where wi is the fraction of material in size interval i, and Si is -the overall specific breakage rate of size i material (fraction per unit time).

Modified contact grouting was introduced almost 15 years ago as a methodology combining traditional contact grouting and consolidation grouting to address groundwater infiltration into hard rock tunnels that utilize cast-in-place concrete as permanent tunnel support. This process has been used on additional tunnels (since initially presented) as a measure to mitigate both groundwater infiltration and exfiltration. During this time, self-sealing grouts have been developed and have been added to the process to further reduce groundwater infiltration that occurs through cracks and discontinuities within the concrete liner itself. This modification is presented and additional results from the grouting process are discussed.

Due to improvements in the safety of other aspects of mining (primarily in roof control), haulage related accidents, particularly rail haulage accidents, are about to become the most common category of hazards causing death and injuries to underground coal miners. The major causes of these accidents are collisions between vehicles, men caught between rib and trip or between cars, derailments, and runaway cars. Such hazards can be greatly reduced if the motorman has the capability to selectively couple and uncouple cars from the cab of the locomotive, to transmit braking intelligence to the coupled cars, to determine if the trip is intact, and if brakes are automatically applied in any uncoupled car. These capabilities can be provided through an improved coupler system, designed and built by Foster-Miller Associates under a Bureau of Mines contract. Early in the program, a survey of rail haulage patents and literature was conducted. Manufacturers of couplers, mine cars and braking systems were contacted and information relevant to the remote control mine haulage application was collected. From this information evolved a working specification and a design concept. The key elements of the specification, shown in Table I, are the result of a detailed tradeoff study and considerable thought given to the specific problems encountered in the mining environment. A brief explanation of each element is as follows: Automatic Coupling - The couplers operate similarly with most already in underground use - they latch together when a trip is backed into a car intended for coupling. Remote Uncoupling - From the locomotive, the motorman can decide how many cars are to be uncoupled, operate the appropriate controls, and the desired coupler is opened.

Approximately since 1925, the phenomena of grinding and classification of minerals with screens have been studied. In the U.S. iron ore mining operations located in the so-called “Mesabi Iron range,” magnetite processing plants have made progress in the application of high-frequency screens that have allowed them to process low-grade Taconite ores and successfully achieve the economic benefit of these minerals. In the particular case of magnetite minerals disseminated in the siliceous matrix, the main objective is to reduce the generation of particles called “middlings” with high silica contents. Commonly the primary challenge of the metallurgical task is to achieve high recoveries and iron concentrates with low impurities. To achieve this, several studies and industrial applications have shown success in this regard and not only in iron ores, but also in other minerals around the world. The study described in this paper attempts to describe some key aspects that helped develop an effective solution and list the benefits associated with this modern process design by using industry-proven technologies for minerals in Chile that have similar characteristics to the minerals of the iron belt in the United States.

Lime made in a coal-fired, rotary kiln has two distinct parts: the interior of the pebble which constitutes about 90% to 95% of the mass, and the surface dust layer which is the remaining 5% to 10%. Uncalcined carbonate and impurities in the product may be present and will not contribute to the hydration reaction. Sulfur, in the form of calcium sulfate, inhibits the hydration reaction out of all proportion to its actual weigh-percent concentration (perhaps more than 100 times). If the stone contains dolomite, this will also inhibit the reaction as its rate of hydration may be nearly 3 orders of magnitude slower than that of calcium oxide. Early in the hydration reaction dolomite appears practically inert, but given sufficient time, it will hydrate. The heat of reaction is nearly the same as for calcium oxide, but the time necessary for complete hydration may be hours; whereas for calcium oxide it is only fractions of a second. The dust layer on the surface also inhibits hydration as it contains a collection of compounds which have low heats of hydration. This layer can tie up additional calcium and delay or prevent its reaction. In addition to these chemical processes, an important physical characteristic of the lime is its specific surface area. This is effected by the thermodynamics of calcination and the original stone grain chemistry. All of these factors are agglomerated in the gross slaking rate of lime. The total hydration of the chemical complex that is called commercial lime can be more easily understood by considering the individual reactions and combining them to form a more comprehensive picture of the situation. Calcium oxide and magnesium oxide hydrate similarly, differing only in their reaction kinetics. Dolomite, however, reacts differently than a simple mixture of calcium oxide and magnesium oxide as its hydration is strongly influenced by calcination thermo-dynamics and stone grain structure. Finally, the dust hydration and composition should be examined Understanding these reactions enables one to examine hydration reaction graphs with more insight into the factors which determine their shape.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, devised a direct flotation method for treating low-grade carnallice (KC1.MgC12. 6H20) and sylvinite (a mixture of KC1 and NaC1) ores characterized by a high content of water-insoluble impurities. The procedure consists of (1) flocculation-depression of the insoluble slimes, (2) decomposition leach (carnallite only), (3) potash rougher, cleaner and recleaner flotation, and (4) final product leaching. The technique eliminates the necessity of removing the water-insoluble slimes by mechanical or flotation desliming. Laboratory results demonstrated that the direct flotation procedure, when compared with conventional techniques, yielded equivalent or improved flotation results with equal or less reagent consumptions. The direct flotation method recovered 81.6% of the solid-phase KC1 from carnallite ore and 79.7% of the KC1 from sylvinite ore in final products containing 60.5% and 60.9% K20, respectively. A flowsheet incorporating the described flotation procedure is presented.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) Purple Line Extension Section 1 (PLE1) is a $3.12 billion USD design-build, underground heavy rail project, connecting an existing station at Wilshire Blvd. and Western Ave. and extending 3.92 miles under Wilshire Blvd, terminating approximately 550 feet west of Wilshire and La Cienega Blvds. The project alignment runs immediately adjacent to the La Brea Tar Pits, world renowned for Pleistocene fossils and continuous seepage of asphaltum (locally known as tar) and gas in an urban setting. This paper presents a successful case history of the planning, design, and construction efforts to safely construct the bored tunnels through Reach 3 of the alignment (between Wilshire/Fairfax Station, and Wilshire/La Cienega Station), in a designated Methane Zone in the City of Los Angeles. Historical context on decades of challenges and studies is summarized. Further, this paper outlines the pro-active partnership between the Owner: LA Metro, the Design Builder: Skanska-Traylor-Shea Joint Venture, and geotechnical design services provided by Golder Associates to safely manage pressurized face tunneling through a confined gas zone near the La Brea Tar Pits. Specifically, a program of in-situ oxidation and soil gas extraction was designed to test and analyze risks associated with pressurized face TBM tunneling through the complex subsurface geological conditions, then implemented during construction. In advance of tunneling, a network of wells was used to draw air into the gas zone to oxidize the 6,500 ppm hydrogen sulfide gas, as well as determine methane recharge rate. During TBM tunneling, the wells were converted to a gas extraction system to evacuate, filter (H2S) and burn (CH4) the gas as the Tunnel Boring Machine passed, providing a preferential pathway for the gas to migrate toward extraction wells, and preventing the migration to adjacent buildings. The team extracted and treated 3,857,000 cubic feet of mostly methane gas over 40 days as the TBMs passed through the zone. Gas behavior, pressures, and concentrations were monitored not only from the extraction system, but also in basements and utility vaults along this section of the alignment.

Several hydrometallurgical leach processes have been recently proposed for the recovery of copper from copper concentrates. These include the Cymet Process of Cypress Metallurgical Processes Corporation, the Arbiter Process of the Anaconda Company, and the Treadwell Process of Treadwell Engineering company(1). These processes and similar processes for recovery of other minerals, have several phenomenological similarities which make their quantitative description difficult at best. These include (a) the presence of more than one phase, (b) non-uniform mineralization of the feed concentrate, (c) surface and diffusional effects, and (d) a particle size distribution which varies with time. Semi-theoretical, rather than purely empirical, treatment of such processes in their developmental stages will result in a better understanding of the physico-chemical mechanisms in effect. This, in turn, will allow reliable process designs to be made on reasonable time scales for reasonable development costs. Once a production unit is built, such an approach will provide straightforward methods for process control and optimization. A research and development effort to determine criteria and procedures for semi- theoretically characterizing such mineral leach recovery processes has been initiated in a joint venture by the Arizona Bureau of Mines and the College of Mines at the University of Arizona. This group has as its task the mathematical characterization of hydrometallurgical leach recovery processes using semi- theoretical mechanisms for the underlying phenomena. The resulting models are experimentally verified and parameterized on the laboratory scale in such a way that they can be utilized with similarity criteria to provide reliable scaleup to production designs. This discussion will be centered around the elements of such an approach and how they fit together.

The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research, Spokane Mining Research Division, is continuing its high-energy, high-displacement testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link mesh, welded-wire mesh and combinations of them. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can assist in interpreting the condition of installed surface support. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to better quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support.

Frozen coal creates severe handling problems. Utilities require uninterrupted supplies of coal to meet their increasing coal consumption rates. Difficulties incurred due to frozen coal result in more costly downtime for the utilities. Air cannons, vibratory hammers and thaw sheds are examples of mechanical devices used to break, crack or thaw frozen coal. Recently chemical treatments have been developed as preventive measures. The freezing of coal depends upon a number of factors, of which one of the most significant is surface moisture. The more there is, the larger the frozen coal problem. Slide 1 depicts a graph of frozen coal compressive strength as a function of surface moisture. Below a certain minimum value the coal will not freeze. Above this point, compressive strength is essentially a linear function of moisture over the range practically encountered. By surface moisture is meant the free moisture on coal having a normal vapor pressure as opposed to capillary moisture or inherent moisture. In addition to the straightforward freezing of coal surface moisture binding particulates together, frost formation occurs due to temperature gradients which develop in rail-cars and stockpiles .

In 1977, the Bureau of Mines awarded a grant to the State of South Carolina to explore the possibility of using Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data as an aid in monitoring surface mining activities in selected counties of the State. Work had been done in Aiken County prior to the grant by Bureau of Mines and State personnel at the EROS Data Center using both the GE Image 100 and ESL IDIMS systems. The initial work on the 1-100 consisted of locating and measuring the areas of various kaolin mines. The results were excellent on location, identification, and accurate area measurements of several mines as compared with aerial photos of each mine. The effort also included locating and measuring the size of all mines (including sand and gravel) within two U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 7 ½ min quadrangle maps. Line printer overlays using the IDIMS equipment and software resulted in the location of all known mines within an estimated error less than ±91.4m (5300 feet). Mine acreage was calculated by counting each symbol (which represented one pixel) and multiplying by 1.1 (the number of acres per pixel). Figure 1 shows a portion of one quadrangle overlay. Table I gives a comparison of acreage measured for sever- al mines from the 1-100 and IDIMS systems vs. aerial photo measurements.

The latest technology and novel equipments in kaolin processing industry in China are described in this paper. Some typical experimental results are presented, which include laboratory-, pilot-or commercial-scale tests. The characteristics of kaolin processing technology are summarized, and the developing trends are indicated.
