The kinetics of MnO reduction from high carbon ferromanganese slag was investigated using a sessile drop technique at 1600 ºC. The effects of reductant type, ambient atmosphere and slag composition on the MnO reduction were illuminated. Two different types of industrial reductants (ground to a particle size of 44 to 106micron and pressed to pellets) were used as substrates for small slag droplets of varying composition, which were reacted in a CO or Ar atmosphere with the reaction studied in-situ. The cross sections of the reacted slag-carbon samples were subsequently studied by EPMA to find the extent of MnO reduction as a function of reaction time. It was found that the rate of MnO reduction is affected by both the type of reductant, the ambient atmosphere and the presence of metallic components in the slag. Higher reduction rates were obtained for charcoal than for coke as reductant while a CO atmosphere unexpectedly yielded faster MnO reduction than an Ar atmosphere. It was also found that metal prills in the initial slag will increase the rate ofMnO reduction.

This paper discusses the principles and application of risk assessment and management as the basis for environmental management within the mining industry. Unlike in other industries, mines are required to obtain closure certificates in terms of section12 of the Minerals Act, which should ultimately release them from further environmental responsibilities. It is emphasized that the concept of environmental risk assessment and management, when applied correctly will mean that the mine will be identifying and managing environmental issues beyond those set by current legal requirements and management strategies. The focus shifts from conventional minimum legal compliance management to management of real environmental risks. The advantage of this approach is that the perceived ?shifting of legal and management goal posts? due to changing environmental laws or management principles, will not influence or dictate the mine?s short or long-term management objectives or actions, mine closure funds can be more accurately determined and mine closure should become a relatively simple procedure. The risk assessment approach has been applied to the planning of mine closure at Iscor?s Durban Navigation Collieries (Durnacol) in Kwa-Zulu Natal and certain key risk issues such as the long-term risk of water pollution from coal discard dumps have already progressed to fully quantitative risk assessment. This paper will discuss the process, which has been followed to date, with particular emphasis on the most recent phase, namely quantitative risk assessment and management of pollution from coal discard dumps. It is believed that the approach that is being pioneered at Durnacol and which overcomes some of the more obvious deficiencies of both the EMPR and the traditional IEM process will ultimately serve as the model for all responsible mines in South Africa. It is also believed that this approach will enable the authorities to issue closure certificates with the confidence that there will be no unforeseen surprises in the years after closure.

In this study, a statistical model is suggested in order to determine the methane emission from a working seam. In the proposed method, methane concentrations which are systematically measured in return airway are the sample values, and the calculated statistical parameter is the upper confidence limit of the average of these values. At any given time, the probability of methane concentration in the return airflow to be lower than the calculated upper confidence limit value is 97.5%. The statistical method has been applied to the panel 206 of Armutcuk Mine, Turkish Hardcoal Enterprises. The calculated methane emission value for the considered shift was 15.18 m3/t.

In constructing a financial model of a project significant effort is expended on capital and operating cost estimation, commodity price forecasts, and choice of discount rates while uncertainty in the primary input, the reserve, is often completely overlooked. The aim of this paper is to highlight the impact of uncertainty in the resource/reserve estimation process on the assessment of the financial performance of a project. Four qualitative processes have an impact on resource/reserve uncertainty. These stages are: 1.Ore definition 2.Geological interpretation 3.Resource estimation 4.Ore reserve estimation and mine planning. Each stage contains a number of tasks that may be considered as key performance activities (KPAs). Optimizing the manner in which these KPAs are completed can remove a great deal of uncertainty and error from the resource/reserve process. Examination of these KPAs within a company can also provide an insight to the quality of the information underlying the project. This will allow the company to identify any shortcomings in the data and to assess the resulting risks (Gilfillan, 1998). A hypothetical financial model based on a gold operation has been used to estimate the potential effect of resource/reserve uncertainty on revenue. Monte Carlo simulation has been employed to simulate a number of hypothetical scenarios: 1.a base case scenario which assumes no major errors or biases, but contains realistic margins for uncertainty that would exist in any project where work is being completed to the limit of best endeavours 2.a poor sampling scenario which assumes poor sampling practice and lack of understanding of sample preparation 3.a poor resource estimation scenario which assumes poor modelling and inappropriate choice of interpolation technique, and 4. a ?typical? scenario which represents a project where the majority of KPAs are not performed as best as they could be. The results show that realistic uncertainty ranges can generate changes in the estimate of potential revenue of plus or minus 30%.Therefore, it is important to allow for errors in these processes in any financial analysis or feasibility study. It is recommended that, when building a financial model, are view of relevant resource/reserve KPAs be carried out and appropriate ranges for uncertainty be applied to provide a range of potential outcomes. These outcomes can then be factored into the detailed cash flow analysis in order to ensure that technical uncertainty is built into financial decisions.

The paper describes the construction of 5 plugs to resist high water heads at depth within the South Deep Gold Mine, Randfontein, South Africa. A total of 20 segments were involved to create these plugs, which were 7.5 m long at the 58 Level and 6.25 m long at the50 Level. Emphasis is placed on the QA/QC and verification methods, which were developed and governed all phases of the work, from initial rock preparation and pregrouting through to the final grout tightening of the rock/plug interface and the surrounding rock. This paper is one in a series of papers detailing other aspects of the project, which was constructed largely between May 2001 and August 2003.

During mining, the stress in the coal face varies, and, at the same time, the gas flows from the coal body into the excavation, which will cause the gas pressure to change continuously. Assuming the coal gas content of the coal to be constant, and applying the law of energy conservation, the influence of stress concentration on the gas pressure was analysed. It was found that the stress is proportional to the gas pressure. Finally, as a result of analysis and the law of gas flow, the gas pressure dynamic distribution ahead of tunnelling was modelled, and the mechanism by which blasting induces outburst was explained by making use of the model. The data base of failed pillar cases as used by Salamon and Munro (1967) in their original analysis to determine the strength of coal pillars empirically, has been updated for this study. It is shown that the Vaal Basin and Klip River coal fields exhibit similar behaviour that differs from the failures in other areas, i.e. failure at high safety factors within a short period of time. Those collapse cases have been omitted from the new data base. Failures in the other areas that occurred after 1967 have been added. Using a technique to minimize the area of overlap between the populations of safety factors of failed and intact pillar cases, the new data base was re-analysed in conjunction with the original Salamon-Munro data base of intact pillar cases, from which the cases in the areas of weak coal were likewise eliminated. It was found that a linear formula reduced the overlap area by22%. The new formula predicts higher strength for pillars with a width-to-height ratio greater than approximately 2.0 to 3.0 and a lower strength for smaller pillars. It was also found that in order to obtain the same relative measure of stability as with the Salamon-Munro formula, the strength constant in the new formula should be within a range of 2.8 to 3.5 MPa. For most current South African coal mining conditions, using the new formula for pillar strength will result in leaving smaller pillars without sacrificing stability. The reason for this is that the Salamon-Munro formula under-estimated the strength of larger pillars and over-estimated the strength of smaller pillars. The new formula will thus result in improved reserve utilization without sacrificing stability.

Coal is Australia’s highest export earner and Australia is the world’s largest exporter of coal. With coal now being extracted from deeper reserves under increased risk profile, and in the interest of aiding the stability of coal supplies, Japan is funding a number of safety projects in Australia and China. The CSIRO, Australia’s premiere research organisation with the country’s largest exploration and mining research group, are currently undertaking a jointly funded Japan-Australia safety project at Anglo Coal’s new Grasstree Colliery in central Queensland. The project, entitled Mine Communication and Information for Real-time Risk Analysis, will deliver step-change capabilities in data integration, decision support, gas monitoring, geo-technical monitoring, emergency response and personnel safety to the Grasstree Colliery. Some key activities include: developing and installing underground coal mine Ethernet LAN components, real-time monitoring of gas and geo-technical sensors, MODBUS serial to TCP/IP converters, e-reporting of underground conditions, emergency guidance systems and underground trials of Internet Protocol telephone and video. The project seeks to integrate (in real time) key data sets from the comprehensive and diversified range of propriety system currently in use at mines (ventilation, strata, operations e.g. haulage, pumps, conveyors etc) into a single integrated risk management interface. This interface will filter the data through a rules-based inference engine that will cross reference the various data streams, compare with past events and outcomes associated with the similar historical data and present this “intelligence” to

The efficient and accurate design of pipe and pumping plant for non-Newtonian mineral slurries remains a problem. The objective of this paper is to present the development of the Balanced Beam Tube Viscometer (BBTV), an instrument which could facilitate more accurate design for these slurries. The background of rotational and tube viscometry is reviewed and the fundamental principles and inherent advantages of the BBTV are given. The design, data acquisition and processing techniques are introduced and results showing the reliability of the new instrument are presented and discussed. It is concluded that the BBTV is a reliable and versatile instrument for both routine analyses and research work, and has the potential to provide data for the refinement of the design procedure for mineral slurry pipe and plant design.

Geology, and the detailed understanding of its properties, are fundamental to the optimal design and successful operation of any mine. To that end extensive fieldwork has been conducted at Anglo Platinum?s PPRust operation to collect geotechnical information both from exploration boreholes and in-pit mining faces. Since 1998, geotechnical data has been collected from over 337 km of exploration core, 7 km of exposed mining faces and more than 15 600 field and laboratory tests, in order to define the complete set of geotechnical properties for each rock type in the mining area. The geotechnical information collected is stored in two databases, SABLE Warehouse and MineMapper3D before it is imported into the Datamine mining software package. The geotechnical parameters, mining rock mass rating system (MRMR), uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), fracture frequency per metre (FF) and rock quality designation (RQD), are modelled using geostatistics to generate a 3D geotechnical block model. Data is interpolated between exploration boreholes and exposed mining faces and modelling is constrained, using wireframes, by rock type and structural features. By having detailed geotechnical information available in a 3D model that can be readily accessed and interpreted, significant production optimisations, feasibility studies and planning initiatives can be implemented. From a slope design perspective the model is used to target data deficient zones and highlight potentially weak rock mass areas. As this can be viewed in 3D, the open pit slopes can then be designed to accommodate the poor quality area before it is excavated. It also follows that geotechnical zones can be readily identified and the slopes optimised accordingly. Rather than viewing the drill and blast department as an isolated cost centre and focussing on minimising drill and blast costs, the fragmentation requirements of the comminution and load and haul business areas are studied. It is well understood that chemical energy is the cheapest form of comminution and that major downstream benefits can be derived by increasing drill and blast expenditure. 238 blasts were assessed to determine the optimum fragmentation requirements for ore and waste. Based on the study a mean fragmentation target of 150 mm was set for delivery to the crushing circuit and a mean fragmentation of 230 mm was set for waste loading from the pit. Substantial benefits have been realised in the drill and blast department by developing empirical correlations that relate the MRMR values in the geotechnical model to a blastability index, fragmentation, required powder factor and costs. For some time spirals have been the process equipment chosen to recover metal in the size range 0.15 to 3mm from ferrochrome and silico/ferro manganese slags. Recoveries of metal obtained using spirals are usually about 70%. Spirals are also difficult to control. By combining a novel gate on the Apic pneumatic fines jig with the recently developed Apic classifier, metal recoveries of 76% and grades of over 90% have been obtained for FeCr and SiMn slags in the size range 0.15 to 3 mm. The paper compares classifier operating performance and costs with those spirals for FeCr and SiMn metal recovery from slags. The classifier technology can also be applied to chromite and iron ores and coal fines.

Gravity separation techniques have been in use in the mineral sands industry for decades; from the Reichert cone to Wilfley tables, Wright sluices and the Kelsey Jig, all attempting that elusive perfect gravity separation. Just as the gravity separation industry evolved, Richards Bay Minerals also evolved in their use and approach to gravity separation. This paper discusses the history of gravity separation at Richards Bay Minerals and briefly comments on future developments. History Primary Concentration Richards Bay Mineral?s (RBM) first mining concentrator and mineral separation plant commenced operation in 1977 to process ilmenite, rutile and zircon bearing dunal deposits along the northern Natal coast. The orebody contained a greater proportion of non-valuable magnetic heavy mineral in the SG range of 3 to 4 compared to West Australian and Florida USA deposits, making mineral separation more difficult(1). The deposit was mined using two dredges feeding a floating 2000 tph concentrator. Concentrator feed was screened and fed to two four-stage circuits consisting of primary, scavenger, cleaner and recleaner Reichert cones [see Figure 1]. The primary units were fed at a rate of 80 tph and a density of 60% solids by weight.

The paper presents sensitivity analysis for a dynamic model of submerged arc silicon furnaces. The model we study, called ?Simod?, was developed by Elkem in cooperation with NTNU and Sintef. It is today a much used tool in Elkem for operator training and analysis of the dynamic behaviour of the silicon production process. The aim of our work is to bring the simulator tool closer to industrial practice, and construct a mechanism to adapt the model to the behaviour of a running process, online. The paper presents the results of the sensitivity analysis that has been undertaken for important parameters in the Simod model. The parameters associated with the process inputs are electric power loss, loss of fixed C and reactivity of carbon. The output signals that have been investigated are fed quartz, tapped silicon and silica. The paper also interprets the results of the sensitivity analysis in a process operation context.

The Skorpion Zinc Project demonstrated the viability of the production of zinc from non-sulphide (commonly called ?zinc-oxide?) ores, using the leach/solvent extraction/electrowinning process route. The success of Skorpion raised the profile of a number of other zinc oxide deposits, considered to be similar. However, a study of three such deposits demonstrates that the application of whole-ore-leaching may be limited and that the concentration of zinc, or at least the separation from acid-consuming gangue minerals, prior to leaching is essential to the successful recovery of zinc from these deposits. The recovery of zinc is dependent on an understanding of the geology of the deposit, the mineralogical association of zinc minerals with gangue minerals (Boni, 2005) and limitations of mining practice. Flow sheet development and the associated metallurgical test work to derive an economically viable treatment route from two of these deposits are discussed. Key parameters affecting zinc recovery by gravity separation and flotation are presented, demonstrating that even minor differences in mineralogy have a profound impact on zinc recovery and reagent consumption. The study also deals with the determination of appropriate design parameters through metallurgical mapping of the dense media separation process.

Ferrochrome is the major chromium source for stainless steel production, and submerged-arc furnaces (SAF) are most commonly utilised to smelt chromite ores into ferrochrome by using suitable carbonaceous reductants such as coke. Because of the complexity of feed structure and electrical-thermal-chemical interactions, there exist large gradients and wide distributions of temperature, mineralogy and other process variables in the furnace. This leads to various zones in the furnace, and different reduction mechanisms. Control of the furnace is thus often difficult due to the complicated physical and chemical situations in the furnace. The temperature profile in the submerged arc furnace has a great influence on the reduction rate and the production efficiency. Therefore, the energy generation through electrical arcs submerged in the solid feed and its distribution within the packed bed play an important role. In the present paper, an overall process model is illustrated to simulate inter-linked transport processes of fluid flow, heat transfer and reduction kinetics within the submerged arc furnace. The application of reaction kinetic data to simulate the chromite pellet/lumpy ore reduction with CO gas is presented and further adjusted to provide a submodel for a flow and heat transfer simulation for the packed bed by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique. The comprehensive process model is aimed to simulate materials and gas flow, temperature and energy distribution throughout the furnace system. A preliminary model for gas flow and temperature distribution for the upper part of a 20 MW furnace (the packed bed) for high carbon ferrochrome production has been developed under simplified conditions. The integration of the reaction kinetic model into process simulation, and the future vision for a more comprehensive process modelling are discussed. It is expected that better understanding of the furnace insights through process modelling will help process optimisation and furnace control.

In the synopsis, the author concludes that ?high levels of seismicity do not coincide with high rockburst rates?. Implicit to an appreciation of this statement is the necessity of a common understanding of what is understood by the terms: ?high level of seismicity? and ?high rockburst rates?. With respect to the former term there is no difficulty in that the level of seismicity is traditionally measured in terms of the Richter Scale. The latter term however presents a problem in that the author defines it as a particular sort of seismic event?viz: ?Rockburst? is understood as a seismic event that causes damage to an underground excavation with subsequent injury, loss of material/equipment or production shifts? (p. 322). No scale is given of the amount of: ?excavation damage ?level of injury ?material/equipment loss ?production shifts lost whether separate or cumulative, for a particular seismic event to be classified as a rockburst. A further difficulty arises in that in common usage the words ?rockburst?, ?seismic event? and ?earthquake? are all used to describe the same event.

The carcinogenic potential of chromium (VI) has been the subject of numerous environmental and occupational studies, from which many regulatory efforts emanated. Besides the regulation of levels of known toxic substances (e.g. Cr (VI)), the classification of dusts for regulatory purposes has thus far depended on broad definitions of particle size, mainly used to distinguish only between inhalable and respirable particles. In the past, ultrafine particles (less than 0.1 µm diameter) (PM0.1) were often regarded as a non-issue, because it was believed that significant doses would not deposit in the lungs. A growing body of scientific data is indicating that ultrafine particles are more toxic than their coarse counterparts. Increased toxicity can be related to the unique dosimetric aspects of the deposition and disposition of inhaled ultrafine particles. Secondly, ultrafine particles have a larger surface area per given mass. The increased surface area can act as a carrier for co-pollutants, specifically transition metals (including chromium) that could form a coat on the particle surfaces during particle formation. This suggests that the presence of ?inert? ultrafine particles in the environment may enhance the potential for exposure to reactive airborne compounds, including Cr (VI). These factors are particularly important when information on occupational epidemiology is interpreted. It is desirable to consider the particle size distribution, for example when occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium compounds is assessed. Since ultrafine particles are more toxic than coarse particles with the same chemical composition, it could be speculated that cancer slope factors might be related to particle size distribution. This is relevant not only to carcinogenic chromium compounds, but also basically for any particle-associated toxicants. In general, the probability of developing health effects associated with occupational toxicants is likely to be higher when these are associated with the ultrafine particle range.

For technology transfer to be successful a process, from research to full scale application, has to be followed. This paper describes such a process and how it is applied in practice. Some of the ?do?s? and ?don?ts? are highlighted. Recommendations are made on how to communicate existing knowledge and to ensure that a framework exists to effectively plan future projects with final technology transfer objectives firmly in place.
