Mining executives often have a difficult task determining what the strategic objective of the business should be as this can be impacted by the prevailing market conditions. In addition, they have no mechanism to quantitatively 'test' the impact of this strategic decision on the business and understand the underlying dynamics. During the commodities bull run of 2003 to 2008 the strategic objective may have been to grow the long term value of the business (NPV) through increased tonnage, acquisition and finding new reserves, which all came with an increasing fixed cost base. Now with the financial crisis upon us and the collapse of commodity prices and demand, executives have adjusted their strategies as 'cash is king' and short-term cash flow, in some instances at the expense of long terms value, is the order of the day. For many mining companies, mine closures, reductions in production and cost cutting exercisers are now the focus. In many instances, management do not have an ability to rapidly test different strategic alternatives to 'test' the impact on value, unit costs, reserves and profitability at the operational level and optimize the underlying trade-off variables. Economic modelling of the complete business value chain is a means of linking the operational 'reality' and strategic choices, so that the full impact can be assessed. This paper describes some of the challenges facing mining executives and how economic modelling can be applied to make decision making more rigorous.

Fugitive dust from mineral extraction and processing activities can significantly influence air quality, the environment, and the health and quality of life of workers and surrounding communities. Poor engagement and communication between experts and lay persons, disciplinary silos and polarised viewpoints have made it difficult to develop a holistic understanding of the complex health issues associated with environmental emissions of mine dusts, and consequently to design meaningful and integrated approaches to address such issues. The collaborative Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) Mine Dust and Health Network, hosted by Minerals to Metals at the University of Cape Town, serves as a collaborative think-tank to inform research directions within and across disciplines, government policy and regulations, health monitoring programmes at public clinics, industry best practice, community healthcare and impact prevention programmes. It focuses initially on the southern African region, but with the intention to expand to mining-intensive developing countries within the rest of Africa, South America and Asia. This paper outlines the approach and activities of this global transdisciplinary and intersectoral network and presents some of the key outputs and achievements to date. It is concluded that the, cost benefit of such systems, deriving partially from the reduced temperature rise in situations where cold water IS sent underground from surface, would more than justify the installation cost.

This paper reviews the theoretical methods used in South Africa for the prediction of heat pick-up and air-temperature gradients along main haulages. These methods include those of Starfield, Ramsden, McPherson, and Goch and Patterson. The differences in predictions based on typical airway conditions are explained as being due to differences in the mathematical models on which the predictions are based. The largest discrepancies were found for dry airways and for airways with bulk air coolers. The errors in predictions of the effect of machines and coolers that have been running for only a few months are calculated, and the limitations of various simplified methods are discussed.

SYNOPSIS The paper describes each of the stages in a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) or carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant, and details the steps that can be taken to achieve effective carbon management by referring to practices at the Daggafontein CIP plant. This approach was adopted because of the difficulty in summarizing current carbon management in the many varying operations in South Africa, Daggafontein being chosen as a high-tonnage dedicated well-run plant of recent design. Because of the major role played by the consumption of carbon in the operating costs of CIP and CIL plants, an attempt is made to develop a series of indexes based on quality parameters and price that can be used as a guide In the selection of carbon.

(Visitor) T his paper highlights the changes that are taking place at De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited in mining methods, mechanization, and employment practices. De Beers has four underground mines in Kimberley itself (Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, De Beers, and Wesselton), and two open-cast mines outside Kimberley (Finsch and Koffiefontein). Emphasis is placed on the new method envisaged for Koffiefontein when it becomes an underground mine. The paper also includes notes on chemical drilling and on winding practices.

The hazard of rock bursts and rock falls as experienced in South African gold mines is examined in the light of recent research findings. The problem areas include high fatality rates, losses in production and equipment, and a detrimental influence on the recruitment of labour. The nature of the hazard is analysed, and it is shown that rock bursts are strongly related to the spatial rate of energy release by mining but that rock falls are not. The role of blasting and geological discontinuities is discussed. Practical rock-burst control strategies are compared, including the use of stabilizing pillars, back-filling and, in particular, techniques for reducing the frequency and severity of accidents resulting from large rock bursts. The latest stope-support experiments and their potential implications to mining are consid~red. It is concluded that a better understanding of the rock-burst and rock-fall hazard has resulted from the industry's research efforts. The findings can be applied towards obtaining an improved underground environment for men and machines.

In dredging practice sand is eroded at very high flow velocities using water jets. The existing pick-up functions overestimate erosion. By taking the permeability into account conventional pick-up functions can be made suitable for high velocity erosion. This can be achieved by modifying the critical Shields parameter. The procedure is demonstrated using the pick-up function of Van Rijn. The theory is compared with experiments and agreement is good.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand and the Mining Technology Division of the CSIR have co-operated to define the problems associated with deep level mining and in this paper they will identify what they consider to be the critical areas requiring technological solutions. This perspective will then be applied to work currently being carried out by both the organizations and gaps for additional developments will be identified. Finally the Co-operative Research Centre methodology operating in Australia is described. The purpose of this CRC is to provide a vehicle for R&D co-operation to develop and implement technologies which will increase the competitiveness of the mining industry. A further objective is to develop an appropriately skilled human resource base.

A computer-aid is described that is designed to calculate steady-state material balances for ore-dressing circuits. The program determines the material balance from a specification of the process condition. No mathematical models or data adjustment techniques are employed. As such the program complements existing simulation and material balance 'smoothing' packages. The process condition is specified using performance indicators. These are significant parameters in the industry with which all practising mineral processors are very familiar. The program employs an equation-oriented technique for material balancing and so has had to deal with the difficulties peculiar to that approach.

The uranium production forecasting program described in this paper projects production from Reasonably Assured, Estimated Additional and Speculative Resources in the cost categories of less than $130/kg U. Originally designed to handle South African production, it has been expanded and redimensioned using available published information to forecast production for countries of the Western World. The program forecasts production from up to 400 plants over a period of fifty years and has built-in production models derived from documented historical data of the more important uranium provinces. It is particularly suitable to assess production cavabilities on a national and global scale where variations in outputs for the individual plants tend to even out. The program is aimed at putting the uranium potential of any one country into a realistic perspective, and it could thus be useful for planning purposes and marketing strategies.

Determination of mineral composition is of significant importance for the mineral sands industry as this information is required for orebody evaluation, the control of mineral processing plants and the determination of product quality. Mineral processing is made more difficult by the presence of pseudorutile, leucoxene, altered-ilmenite and particle inclusions. The paper investigates the properties of such elements from a single product stream using an MLA approach.

Metal inventories are usually reported in financial statements of mining companies. However, the value of these inventories can be reliable only if the metals in stock are measured within acceptable tolerances. Reliable metal balancing requires accurate mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis. Many mining companies are usually unable to validate the accuracy of metals in inventories at the end of their financial year. This is mainly due to poor mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis practices. This has an adverse impact on metallurgical accounting and metal valuation. In addition, it puts a lot of stress on external auditors, who have the duty to recommend the approval of the financial statements to the board of directors. Although a full value chain of metal reconciliation includes the accuracy of Mineral Reserve definition and grade control at the mine, this paper discusses the implementation of best practices for mass measurement, sampling, and chemical analysis at processing plants. This is an important aspect of sampling and reconciliation that is required in order to improve the reporting of inventories in the financial statements of public mining companies. Trackless mining in low profile (LP) and extra low profile (XLP) platinum stopes has forced equipment designers to re-evaluate their equipment profiles to match the undulating reef. Low profile equipment designed to work in conditions with smooth and flat floors will simply not function with undulating floors and roofs and will become wedged between the floor and roof, beached on undulations due to lack of ground clearance, or suffer excessive mechanical damage. Tyres, too, need special evaluation, as conventional tyres for trackless mining do not work in an extra low profile environment.

In the wake of the financial crisis that affected world markets in 2002, there has been an increasing international focus on corporate governance. Various corporate governance codes of practice have been introduced, such as the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation in the USA, the Combined Code in the UK, and King III in South Africa. This focus on corporate governance has increased since the most recent financial crisis in 2008, the effects of which are still being felt world-wide. In the mining and minerals industry, reliable metal accounting is essential to sound corporate governance and is also becoming a focus of increased attention and concern, particularly as the figures generated by the metal accounting system feed directly into the financial accounts of mining companies. Mass measurement, sampling, and analysis provide the input data for the metal accounting system and sound corporate governance requires that the procedures used are based on best practice and that the data generated is accurate and handled correctly, transparently, and consistently to produce the accounting reports. The AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has been widely adopted in the industry as a means to achieve this, and the compilers of the Code have conducted numerous metal accounting audits at operations, both in South Africa and abroad. Elutriation of solid reactants from fluidized bed reactors can affect their process performance and efficiency greatly. Chlorination fluidized bed reactors for selective conversion of solid metal oxides to metal chlorides are used widely these days. This study provides a platform for a proper understanding of reactant solid characteristics and solid shrinkage interaction with elutriation rate constants using multi-sized particles, sand-like, ?Geldart B? chloridable materials. The study has found that actual elutriation rates of the reactive system are influenced by complex parameters? interaction including bed diameter, reactor freeboard height, bed minimum fluidization velocity, and reactant?s physical properties.

Leinster Nickel Operations, located in Western Australia, consists of an underground and three open pit mines in relatively adverse ground conditions. This paper reviews our ground control practices in the open pits, covering aspects of ground support, wall control and monitoring. These methods have been effective in allowing mining operations to continue beneath unstable slopes. In particular, the use of Groundprobe?s Slope Stability Radar has enabled the Harmony Open Pit to safely operate for months following indication of failure from traditional methods. This case study highlights the benefits of investing in appropriate slope stability monitoring systems.
