"Biological cementation of the Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit in Madagascar was causing difficulty in dredge mining and hence in planning and control of production rates. An investigation was initiated to better evaluate the geotechnical properties of the orebody by defining the distribution and geotechnical properties of the cemented strata, in order to generate a site-specific geotechnical model for the deposit. The geotechnical characterization was developed by an integrated approach using several ground investigation techniques such as piezocone (CPTu) testing, geotechnical drilling, standard penetration testing (SPT), as well as laboratory testing. The final outcomes of the investigation included a 3D geotechnical model showing the distribution and extent of the cemented areas, as well as the typical geotechnical parameter ranges associated with each of the defined geotechnical units. The interpretations developed were incorporated into the mine and production planning to ultimately optimize operational planning and control.IntroductionQIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) is a heavy mineral sand mining operation at Mandena, near Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. During the final planning and commissioning stages of the project, the need to fully characterize the unusual geotechnical conditions was identified and a geotechnical investigation became necessary.Nature of the problemDuring the commissioning phase it was found that mining production was being hampered by biologically cemented/indurated layers encountered within the sands. Closer inspection of the indurated horizons in the dredging face revealed that these layers contain a high loading of bacteria and fungi. It appears that the bacteria produce an extracellular (outside the cell) polysaccharide (i.e. sugar and carbon salts), which form a gelling biofilm to trap nutrients. There are a number of different bacteria. The fungi, on the other hand, produce a network of fibrous strands that bind the sand grains together. Thus both bacteria and fungi probably contribute to the ‘apparent cohesive’ strength or binding of the indurated sand (Lynn, 2008)."

This paper describes the tunnel seismic reflective survey, which has been developed by the authors in order to detect the geological condition ahead of the tunnel face three-dimensionally using reflected seismic waves. In addition, the applicability and the accuracy of the result of this system has been validated by comparing with the geological observation results at the tunnel face and the result of the drill logging system, which was conducted simultaneously with this survey in order to predict the rock properties using the data acquired during drilling from the tunnel face by rotary percussion drilling. In dieser Arbeit werden Reflektionsseismische Tunneluntersuchtungen beschrieben, die von den Autoren entwickelt wurde, um die geologischen Eigenschaften am Tunnelstirnende dreidimensional an Hand reflektierter seismischer Wellen bei minimaler Unterbrechung der Arbeit zu untersuchen. Darüber hinaus wurde die Anwendbarkeit und Genauigkeit der mit diesem System erhaltenen Ergebnisse durch Vergleiche mit den Ergebnissen geologischer Beobachtungen am Tunnelstirnende sowie den Ergebnissen des Bohrlogsystems bewiesen. Das letztgenannte System wurde gleichzeitig mit dem hier genannten System eingesetzt, um die Gesteinseigenschaften mit Hilfe der Daten vorherzusagen, die beim Bohren von Probelöchern im Tunnelstirnende mit einer Drehschlagbohrmaschine erhalten wurden. Cet article décrit une méthode de prospection sismique de tunnel, développée par les auteurs, pour déterminer en 3 dimensions les conditions géologiques existant derrière le front de taille, au moyen d’étude et de mesure des ondes sismiques réfléchies dans le sous sol, et ce, avec un minimum d’arrêt des travaux d’excavation. En outre, l'applicabilité et l'exactitude des résultats de ce système ont été vérifiées, en comparant les résultats des observations géologiques effectuées au front de taille, avec ceux du log de forage qui a été effectué parallèlement à ce système, en vue de prévoir les propriétés de la roche, grâce aux données collectées au cours du forage d’un trou de sonde depuis le front de taille à l’aide d’une foreuse rotative à percussion.

This paper reviews the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Bill of 2006, identifies potential areas that require further consideration by the National Treasury and, where appropriate, offers alternatives. At its basic level a royalty regime consists of two elements: the base and the rate that must be applied to the base. Deciding on an acceptable royalty rate is a complex matter and can be done only after extensive analysis of all variables affecting the competitiveness of the regime. The proposed royalty rates are in the range of zero to five per cent and are based on sales revenue. It is argued that future investment patterns are more likely to be influenced by market cycles and commodity prices than policy events. Inevitably the current boom in the minerals sector will come to an end and the success of the proposed regime will be known only when profit margins are under pressure. Policy makers must therefore have the long run in mind when developing policies that affect the ability of industry to do business, without the need to renegotiate each time there is a change in the market. A long-run policy must be sufficiently flexible to allow for consistently fair sharing ratios and splitting of revenues between government and industry. Although broadly in line with international practice, the current version cannot be regarded as internationally competitive and efficient. In order for the royalty bill to become internationally competitive, promote beneficiation of mineral production and adequately compensate the State for the loss of a national resource, the National Treasury should heed the following main recommendations in this review: 1. Abandon the notion that each mineral product must have its own royalty rate; 2. Introduce an NSR type royalty that allows for value-addition costs to be deducted from the base; and 3. Provide for automatic relief through the use of a sliding-scale mechanism based on ability to pay, e.g. the X-Factor used in the gold mining tax formula.

I read your paper in the Journal of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy with great interest, and must compliment you on its brilliance. However, there are some questions I should like to ask, and certain points I should like to highlight. I should appreciate your comments. Written contribution by J.F. Curtis The comprehensive and finely detailed survey of, and proposals for, engineering education in South Africa reflects the author's wide experience in the needs for, and the provision of, such education. This paper wil make a major contribution to the enhancement of the profession of engineering and the improvement in quality of engineering activities in South Africa. Contribution by G.W. Annandalet I have studied your paper in some detail, and am of the opinion that it makes an important contribution to the topic of the development of technological manpower, which is currently being debated in South Africa at al levels. Debate on this topic has risen above the level of academic discussion; it has been discussed by the Economic Advisory Council of the President, and is being considered at Ministerial level. As you have pointed out, there are certainly many aspects that will have to be addressed in the resolution of the crisis in engineering education. In 2001 Platinum overtook gold in foreign revenue earnings for South Africa. The export sales from platinum group metals amounted to R29.3 billion as opposed to gold export sales of R28.6billion1. Organizations must undertake new ventures to replace old, worn-out and obsolete assets with new ones. These assets could be a building, a new product or process, a new mine, or anything that can help the organization to achieve its objective. These ventures are projects by their nature. When a project is pronounced a success, the judgement is usually based on some factual evidence, although not every one uses the same data. From the literature, it is obvious that there is a lack of consensus and objectivity as to what constitutes a successful project. The purpose of this paper is to address the following questions: ?What constitutes a successful project? ? How does one measure project success? ?How can one work toward project success? This paper addresses the requirements for project success of three of the primary stakeholders of a project, namely the business or client, the employees as far as the project team is concerned, and the local community. Indicators are developed into a work breakdown structure (WBS)-like chart to demonstrate success indicators. These indices take cognisance of all the constituents required for project success. The indicators are further developed to take cognisance of the requirements of the local communities. These indices are then weighted to arrive at a total score for the respective stakeholders. Using these WBS models, the success and performance of a project can be evaluated. This score is considered an objective measure of project success. Projects are evaluated more consistently across different projects and the project manager is provided with a management tool that can assist him/her in ensuring greater project success. The shortcoming of this approach is that the weights of the different indices have been estimated at this stage. Research will have to be conducted to more accurately reflect the weights assigned to the indices.

"Gomes Sand is a quarry operation that produces sand and aggregate for the construction industry. The quarry is experiencing inconsistencies in the fragmentation and poor pit conditions as a result of poor drilling and blasting practices. This results in excessive downtime in the load and haul and crushing processes.A benchmarking exercise of the blasting practices was conducted to evaluate the effect of the inconsistency on the mining cycle. After changes in the blasting practices the downtime was reduced, which improved the crushing plant utilization by 4.9%. The improved blasting practices and more consistent fragmentation decreased the average number of loads lost each month due to jaw crusher blockages from 9.2% to 3.9% of plant throughput. The change in blasting practices also improved pit conditions. IntroductionGomes Sand is a quarry operation that has been in operation since 2009, producing sand and stone for the construction industry. The quarry was experiencing unacceptable blasting results. The repercussions included uneven pit floors, large amounts of oversize rock (>500 mm), and inconsistent fragmentation.The blast results affected the load and haul operations as well as the efficiency of the crusher. This resulted in downtime in the daily operations, and consequent production and revenue losses.The crusher product should have a top size of 50 mm. A blast fragmentation of <50 mm would improve the downstream operations and the crusher throughput.An investigation into the blasting practices was carried out to assess whether the downstream delays can be eliminated by improving the blast results. The exercise included:* Assessing if the designed blast layout is adhered to on the bench* Observing the quality and control of drilling* Observing the charging procedure of the blast-holes* Benchmarking the fragmentation consistency of the blasted rock using current blast design and practices* Analysing the throughput of the crushing plant* Investigating the power consumption of the crushing plant and determine if a change in blasting practices will affect this* Evaluating the hours spent by the hydraulic hammer on secondary breaking."

Gladstone Pacific Nickel Limited (GPNL) is proposing to develop the Marlborough nickel deposit in central Queensland and the Yarwun Refinery in Gladstone, Australia. The project proposes to connect the two sites with a DN 500, single pump station slurry pipeline, transporting up to 4 Mtpa of nickel laterite ore as slurry 180 km from Marlborough to Gladstone. Slurry viscosity is a key parameter influencing pipeline design. Not only is the slurry viscosity relatively high, requiring pumping at low concentrations, around 30% by weight, but the viscosity (yield stress and plastic viscosity) increases with shearing or agitation. It is argued that the viscosity changes can be analysed in terms of total energy input, including energy input during grinding. The slurry viscosity is therefore expected to increase along the pipeline and the pumping concentration must be low enough such that the increase in yield stress does not cause transition to laminar flow towards the end of the pipeline. The base viscosity of two ore types is determined using a rotational viscometer for minus 212 micron slurries. Viscosity variations with ore particle sizes of d99 212, 425 and 600microns are investigated. For each of these particle sizes the expected increase in viscosity during pipeline transport is simulated on a laboratory scale by agitation with a turbine mixer in a baffled container to give the same equivalent unit energy input as will occur in the pipeline. Tests were also conducted on the d99425 micron slurry in a 2.7 metre diameter DN 200Wheelstand, rotated for the 23 hour transit time and at a similar relative velocity as in the pipeline. Based on the Wheel stand test results the yield stress is expected to increase by a factor of 3.1during pipeline transit. The preliminary design allows for a reduced pumping concentration to accommodate this increase in yield stress towards the end of the pipeline.

Future development of kimberlite mines is now focused on mining at deeper levels. The consequences are increased difficulty and costs of the mining operations. The decisions on investments require accurate resource evaluation and quantification of the risk. In the decision process the first step consists in choosing the number of boreholes sampling the pipe relative to the level of uncertainty that can be accepted. The uncertainty in the volumes of rocks of different types can be assessed as soon as we can estimate these volumes from a given borehole layout and calculate the error by means of its variance for instance. In theory this can be achieved by using geostatistical techniques (‘transitive theory’), but in practice the calculation of the error on volumes can be achieved in very particular cases, assuming some regular sampling patterns. A different approach has been chosen based on simulations, giving maximum flexibility to reproduce the reality of the sampling procedure. The idea is to simulate the geometry of several ‘possible’ pipes with their internal geology and estimate them by kriging. Several experimental errors are obtained on which risk analysis can be performed. The aim is to find a feasible method to perform the simulations with reasonable chance to correctly represent the reality, without data on the pipe extension. The methodology applied is based on some hypotheses that can be assessed by the geologist as well as by the geostatistician. The procedure assumes a geological model based on current knowledge including appropriate geostatistical variation. What make these simulations specific and powerful in this case comes from the fact that the boundaries between the different rock-types can be simulated using a transformation of the real 3D space into a 2D space defined by means of polar coordinates. Ultimate transformations to account for smoother variations with morphological transformations allow the generation of realistic pipe geometries on which sampling pattern can be used to evaluate the estimation errors. By estimating the simulated pipe geometries with different boreholes layouts a risk curve expressing the uncertainty in the volumes of the different rock-types versus the number of holes can be developed.

The following contributions were received to the paper entitled &apos;Safety in South African mines: An analysis of accident statistics&apos;, by H.S. Eisner and J.P. Leger, which appeared in the J. S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metal., vol. 88, no. 1, Jan. 1988, pp. 1-7. Contribution by H. WAGNER* The paper by Dr H.S. Eisner and Mr J.P. Leger is critical of the safety situation on South African mines and portrays the industry as having little concern for the health and safety of its workers. Moreover, the casual reader gains the impression of deliberate misinformation by the industry to the public concerning safety maters. Furthermore, certain socio-economic reasons are advanced for the apparent differences between the fatality and injury rates reported for coal mines in South Africa and those for the United Kingdom. Authors Eisner and Leger are to be commended on their paper, which highlights, according to their interpretation, various shortcomings of both the Chamber of Mines accident statistics and those published by the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs. Authors&apos; Reply We gratefully acknowledge Dr Wagner&apos;s contribution to the discussion on our paper. For convenience, we shal use his sequence of comments in our reply. Before doing so, however, it may be useful to explain how our paper came to be written. After the explosion at Hlobane Colliery in 1983, one of us (HSE), in February 1984, was retained by the lawyers acting for some of the dependants of the victims to advise on technical maters relating to the explosion. Contribution by Ms S.A. Wats Some of the points made by Ms Wats have already been answered in our comments on Dr Wagner&apos;s contribution. We are fully aware that the number of accidents leading to absences of less than 4 days would be much greater than shown in our bar chart, and are grateful to Ms Wats for drawing attention to the specific exceptions that can make a 1-3 day accident compensable and that are clearly responsible for the relatively low count in that category of the chart.

The rate of face advance in the gold mines is between 3 and 10 m a month, with a median value of about 5 m a month; it follows that faces are blasted less frequently than is planned. There are many advantages in the use of short holes for stoping to give face advances of from 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast. This has the potential for so increasing the frequency of blasting that monthly rates of face advance could be improved significantly. Cleaning with face scrapers is too slow to permit the maximum achievement of a complete clean, drill, and blast cycle for each shift. Short-hole blasting, combined with the use of mechanical conveyors for face cleaning, offers the possibility of completing two such cycles each day, yielding monthly rates of face advance of up to 35 m. Experiments aimed at developing safe, unitized explosive charges well-suited to produce reliable face advances of 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast under a wide range of gold-mining conditions have been notably successful. A novel method of assessing the effectiveness of a blast based on the percentage of holes that leave socket lengths of 5 cm or less was used. Unitized charges of 60 per cent Ammon gelignite, 600 mm long by 25 mm in diameter, appear to be near optimal. The explosive is de-sensitized to obviate detonation by chance mechanical impact, but requires only a 6D detonator for initiation; it has good water-resistance. Means have been developed for producing these cartridges automatically, but the necessary machines will have to be built specially and the cartridges are not yet available in large numbers. A second experiment by way of an extended pilot production trial using these cartridges in holes 0,9 m long is now under way. Preliminary results indicate that drilling and explosive efficiencies and productivity are well above average, even though face scraping is being used. Unitized charges of this type are likely to prove even more advantageous when mechanical face conveyors come into use.

The object of this address is to put this problem, and it is a real problem, into reasonable perspective. This paper describes DRA?s involvement with the expansions at Tati Nickel, Phoenix Mine, that have taken an initial plant design of 3.6 Mtpa (originally built by Murray & Roberts), up to 5 Mtpa, and eventually 12 Mtpa capacity. Initially, the plant could not achieve the design name plate capacity for the first few years of operation, as a consequence of the notoriously hard and abrasive nickel ore affecting primarily the operation of the crusher circuit. In order to extend the life of mine, Tati? assessed and then redefined the mining plan, choosing to increase the Phoenix mine reserves to a lower cut-off grade. In order to increase nickel units produced, the concentrator had to therefore treat additional tonnage at lower head grades. Site investigations and field tests around the comminution circuits are outlined, indicated that the milling circuit could be increased to 650 tph, from the initial design of 470 tph, for a similar feed grade and recovery. A project was initiated to debottleneck the crusher circuit and achieve the new target throughput. (Project 5M). This was followed by a feasibility study of the impact of pre-concentration by DMS, which after promising laboratory tests, was followed up with the installation of a 200 tph ?demonstration? plant. The success of this demonstration plant provided the impetus to expand the supply to the 5 Mtpa mill from a large preconcentration stage. A gyratory crusher (one of the largest and most powerful) will receive ore directly from the open pit operation, feeding into a secondary-tertiary crushing plant followed by a modular DMS preparation circuit. Four large DMS processing modules have been installed to treat the tonnage, with high expected rejection levels. Finally a review of the DMS process capability on an ostensibly disseminated micro-gabbro nickel ore is given, which shows the remarkable impact that preconcentration can have on an operation, both in terms of profitability and a successful process ?expansion?. The performance of the DMS plant has significantly extended the life of mine, allowing the mine to significantly reduce mine cut-off grades and curb its previously selective mining practice.

In the example studied in § 8.4, where w, and w2 were considered to be points, we found that of (w, to W) was nearly one third smaller than o2E (w2 to W), therefore when estimating W one should give more weight to w, than to w2. In general, when evaluating a block W from a set of n samples ws, where WS = l w;w2; ... wn1, a better estimator of µw can be obtained if we give different weights to the sample values, depending on the size and the positions of the samples. "Carboxymethyl cellulose is an organic binder used in the iron ore pelletizing industry. The basic principles of how carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solutions behave during the pelletizing process and how these principles affect the drop and compression strengths of the pellets are poorly understood. The aim of the investigation was therefore to gain knowledge on the behaviour of CMC during the pelletizing of haematite concentrate.Haematite pellets with different additions of CMC (0.1–0.4 wt%), were subjected to drop tests, compression tests, and free moisture content analysis. The relationship between the drop strength, compression strength, free moisture content, elapsed time, and CMC concentration was analysed.The drop strength had a strong correlation with the free moisture content of the haematite pellets, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94. The compression strength of the CMC-bonded haematite pellets increased as the free moisture content decreased, reaching a maximum upon depletion of the free moisture content. Haematite pellets with CMC concentrations of 0.1 and 0.2 wt% developed most of their strength within the first day after pelletizing, whereas pellets with concentrations of 0.3 and 0.4 wt% developed most of their strength between one and two days after pelletizing. The time within which CMC-bonded haematite pellets develop most of their strength is therefore dependent on the CMC concentration. IntroductionFines are produced during the beneficiation of iron ore. These fines are separated from the lump ore and can be upgraded to produce a concentrate, which is used as a raw material for the production of pellets. Pellets in turn form a key burden material for direct reduction processes as well as the blast furnace (Zhu et al., 2015).Inorganic binders such as bentonite have been used predominantly in the iron ore pelletizing process to obtain pellets with suitable properties (Eisele and Kawatra, 2003). These binders, however, have the disadvantage of introducing impurities into the pellets. This has resulted in organic binders being pursued as suitable replacements for inorganic binders, of which carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) shows good potential. Although CMC has been used as an organic binder in iron ore pelletizing, the fundamental principles of how it behaves during pelletizing and how these impact on pellet properties are poorly understood."

In 1904 it was reconstituted as the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa and in 1956 it became the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The objects of the Institute are to advance the science and practice of mining and metallurgy, to afford opportunities for the interchange and recording of knowledge of mining and metallurgy and to ensure high standards of professional conduct and competence.
