About 90 percent of the coal mined underground in the U.S.A. today is mined by the room-and-pillar system. The productivity of the system dropped from about 14,1t per man-day in 1969 to about 7,3 t per man-day in 1978. Since 1974, the U.S. Department of Energy (formerly the U.S. Bureau of Mines) has been engaged in research to improve the production and productivity of the room-and-pillar system. The effort involves the development of integrated, automated, and remote-controlled equipment and systems including remote-controlled continuous miners, automated miner-bolters, automated extraction systems, continuous haulage systems for use behind miners, and remote-controlled equipment for miners, bolters, and shuttle cars. These systems are discussed briefly, the discussion being related primarily to coal winning, although the concepts could be utilized in room-and-pillar systems in mines other than coal mines.

A method is proposed for the evaluation of the influence of grout prestressing systems on the support resistance offered by timber packs. It is shown that, in order not to reduce the load-carrying capacity of timber packs, grout prestressing systems need to be at least as stiff as a single timber rise. The method was used to establish strength specifications for the grout prestressing systems to be used under non-seismic and seismic conditions. For non-seismic requirements, the 24-hour grout strength needs to be at least 1,7 MPa, and the 7-day grout strength 4,9 MPa. The investigation showed that the proposed strength specification is realistic in the light of current grout-strength capabilities. For seismic requirements, the grout strength needs to be at least 4 MPa and 8 MPa to prevent extensive damage to the grout during seismic events with a peak velocity of 1m/s 3 m/s respectively.

The Czechoslovak Scientific-Technical Institute has arranged the international conference 'Hornicka Ostrava' for four or five days at the end of October, 1969, as part of the preparation for the international 'Miners' Congress' on deep coalextraction in 1970. The keynote of the conference is 'New Techniques in coal mining,' and will be covered by five groups dealing mainly with: 1. New trends in the opening of mines, optimal parameters, projections, equipment, utilization of computers for economic analyses, etc. 2. "Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in South Africa received official recognition after the change in government in 1994.The Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) recognized the sector as a vehicle for social and economic development for historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs) who had previously been excluded from participating in the mainstream economy. Having recognized the ASM sector, government introduced several interventions and support structures to foster the development of ASM, to encourage participation of HDSAs, and to address challenges facing the sector. The objective of this paper is to assess the progress made, with particular regard to challenges in the sector. The paper focuses on the policy requirements that were deemed important for the growth of the ASM sector by the White Paper on Minerals and Mining Policy (1998). These can be collated into five categories: access to mineral rights, access to finance, access to markets, technology and skills, and institutional support. The paper provides a review of the support interventions, their intended roles and impact on the sector, and identifies existing gaps and possible ways of dealing with the challenges. There is a need for research to assess the real impact of these past and existing interventions on the ASM sector to draw lessons for future development.IntroductionThe significant rise in artisanal and smallscale mining (ASM) activities worldwide has led to many countries recognizing the sector. ASM takes place in approximately 80 countries (World Bank, 2013). It is estimated that the sector employs between 20 and 30 million people around the world (Buxton, 2013). This compares to between 3 and 3.7 million in 1999 (International Labour Organization, 1999). ASM activities are widespread, occurring mostly in developing countries in Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Central and South America (World Bank, 2013). There has been a significant increase in the number of people participating both directly and indirectly in the sector and this is expected to continue given the socio-economic realities of most developing countries. High levels of poverty and unemployment and growing inequality continue to be largest problems facing the majority of developing countries today. The ASM sector plays an important role as a source of livelihoods, particularly for those residing in rural areas with limited economic opportunities. In the majority of countries, the recognition of the ASM sector was driven by its increasing contribution to socio-economic development through job creation, poverty alleviation, and rural development. In response, a number of intervention strategies were introduced in support of the sector to address its negative impacts and to increase its potential benefits."

VERSLAG- REPORT No. 1365 STUDIES OF INCIPIENT FUSION IN THE SYSTEM CHROMITE- MgO- Al2O3-SiO2-C 5th January, 1972 Investigator: N. A. Barcza SYNOPSIS A fundamental study was made of twelve chromite ores by use of a thermobalance under atmospheric and reducing conditions. It was found that their thermal behaviour under atmospheric conditions can be related to the mineralogical composition of the chromite spinel and the gangue. The overall mechanism of reduction with solid carbon over the temperature range of 1 200 to 1 500°C was shown to be diffusion of carbon through the reaction product. The effects of additions of fluxes and variations in particle size on the kinetics and mechanism of reduction were determined. It was shown that carbon monoxide does not reduce chromite ore up to temperatures of 1 550 °C, and it can therefore be eliminated as the diffusing reducing species. However, the reaction product of reduction, namely a mixed carbide of iron and chromium, was shown to be an effective reducing agent for chromitc ore, while also facilitating the transport of carbon. VERSLAG - REPORT No. 1380 AN ELECTROCHEMICAL MODEL FOR THE LEACHING OF URANIUM DIOXIDE 10th January, 1972 Investigators: C. R. S. Needes, M. J. Nicol SYNOPSIS A correlation between the rate of leaching of UO2 and the electrochemical properties of the oxidant concerned has been derived. This correlation is found to be borne out by experimental results. Certain effects observed in UO2 leaching and hitherto unexplained have been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. Experiments have shown that the mixed potential of a UO2 electrode gives a measure of the rate of dissolution of UO2. Its significance to commercial practice is discussed. CONCLUSIONS (I) The dissolution of UO2 in the presence of a number of oxidants can be explained in terms of an electrochemical mechanism. (2) The mixed potential of the UO2 electrode is a measure of the rate of UO2 leaching. This principle could be used in the control of industrial leaching operations. (3) A simple treatment has provided a mathematical basis for a fundamental correlation between the rate of U02 dissolution and the chemical properties of the oxidants concerned. This relation has been found to agree well with experimental results. (4) A number of phenomena occurring during the leaching of UO2, hitherto not explained in a satisfactory manner, have now been clarified in terms of an electrochemical mechanism.

Platinum base alloys are very corrosion resistant and have got a high melting point. Similar to Ni-base superalloys, which are used for jet turbines, the hardening effect of the intermetallic L12Pt3Al phase is used to receive a material that is creep resistant at high temperatures. Chromium is added to the alloy system to stabilize the L12phase down to room temperature. With the right amount of nickel the misfit and shape of the precipitates can be controlled. Various alloy compositions have been melted and analysed. With scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) a microstructure can be observed, which is very similar to the one in Ni-base superalloys. To support alloy development with simulations, a thermodynamic database of the Pt-Al-Cr-Ni system is about to be established. The SEM and EDS measurements provide useful input to the thermodynamic optimization. Also many data from the literature have been used to receive the best approximation. The Cr-Pt binary phase diagram has been reassessed and the latest results of thermodynamic modelling are presented.

Postage and packing, 3s. 6d. This volume should be of interest to economic geologists and students in this field. A number of illustrated papers on the genesis of ores in sediments are presented; the authors include experts such as Prof G. C. Amstutz, Dr K. C. Dunham, Prof D. Williams and W. G. GarIick. The papers deal mainly with sulphide deposits, but the late Prof J. H. Taylor's contribution concerns ores of iron and manganese. Brief references to the Witwatersrand ores represent the only discussion of South African deposits. With the notable exception of W. G. Garlick's paper on Zambian copper deposits, the Abstracts given are inadequate, necessitating thorough reading of the papers to extract the important matter.

This paper details a study conducted in Canada on the use of a drill with two different types of elastomer-covered handles in place of the standard steel handles. One type of handle was covered with a relatively stiff elastomer with a durometer of 70 (referred to as the plastic handle), and the other was covered with a more compliant elastomer with a durometer of 56 (refered to as the rubber handle). It was found that, compared with the steel handle, the overall acceleration at the interface between the plastic handle and the drill operator's hand was 2,5 times less, and that between the rubber handle and his hand was 3 times less. This reduction occurred predominantly in the frequency range above 500 Hz, and was greater with increasing frequency. However, an analysis based on the methodology of an international standard (which places greater importance on low-frequency vibration), indicated that the reduction in vibration levels was minimal. ~he driller himself felt that operation with the plastic and rubber handles was more comfortable, the rubber handle being preferred.

The Grootegeluk coal-processing plant treats 3 kt of raw coal per hour to produce a middlings fuel coal and a coking coal fraction with ash contents of 35 and 10 per cent respectively. The plus 0,5 mm fraction is treated by heavy-medium processes, the final top size of the coal being 15 mm. About 400 t of minus 0,5 mm coal per hour is subjected to froth flotation. The routes originally considered for the processing of this fine coal were froth flotation, shaking tables, heavy-medium cyclones, and water only cyclones in combination with froth flotation. The results from tests on the fines arising from a small-trial open-cast mine are discussed. When the froth flotation route was decided upon, further tests were conducted on the selection of the equipment most suited to the particular requirements of this coal and the rest of the plant. Tests using different types of flotation cells and dewatering equipment are discussed. During the commissioning, several operational problems were encountered, and the work done to find the best solutions is discussed.

Industrial effluent from various industries contains heavy metals that are a serious threat to humans, flora and fauna in water bodies, and the environment. The heavy metals are dumped after precipitation, which has serious environmental consequences. In this paper, a 2D axi-symmetry CFD model has been developed to study the extraction of chromium ion from industrial effluent, in a hollow fibre membrane, using Alamine 336 as the carrier and kerosene as the diluent. The Navier Stokes equation was used to predict the velocity profile of the aqueous and organic phases, and species transport equation, which considers both convective and diffusive mass transfer, was used to predict the concentration profile of the chromium ion in the computational domain. The distribution coefficient was experimentally determined at a pH 4, which was found to be the optimum pH. Numerical simulations were performed considering 11.11 mol/m3 of initial feed concentration for chromium ions and extractant concentration of 0.2 M. Western Deep Levels (North) is a deeplevel, longwall gold mine. Severe strata control problems and high rates of elastic closure, resulting in high rates of energy release, are associated with mining at depths of up to 3 500 metres. To assist in controlling these aspects of mine design and safety, a waste backfilling system has been designed and commissioned. The integration of such a system into an existing, producing longwall brings many problems of logistics, organization, planning and control. It is the purpose of this paper to examine these aspects of fill management, and to describe some of the practical problems involved with the integration of this project into the mining environment. Although many of the rock mechanics and soil mechanics aspects of backfilling systems are common there are specific problems involved which apply to longwall systems. Very strict guidelines are required for planning personnel to design their backfilling systems for a particular situation. These aspects are examined, and basic models developed which can be used without the necessity of comprehensive input from rock mechanics. A summary of the financial implications is included, and these are examined with regard to possible future applications and expansion of waste filling.

It is well known that job-related hazards and individual factors influence occupational injuries. However, research involving coalminers has been limited. This case-control study assessed the relationships of job-related hazards and individual/life style factors with injuries among underground coal miners. It compared 245 cases with at least one injury during the previous two-year period with 245 matched controls with no injury. The data were gathered via personal interview and analysed using the conditional logistic model. The significant risk factors were materials handling (adjusted OR 5.15), poor environmental/working conditions (2.63), geological/strata control-related hazards (2.35), lack of formal education (3.00), sleep disorders (1.86), alcohol consumption (2.32), disease (2.23), having a large family (5.40), and risk-taking behaviour (9.40). Machine-related hazards, sleep disorders and alcohol consumption primarily affected workers aged less than 45 years; whereas, environment/working condition-related hazards, presence of disease, smoking, risk-taking behaviour and large family size were more likely among workers aged 45 or over. The existence of an impressive reserve of oxidized cobalt-copper bearing ores in the African copper belt area lead the GECAMINES (DRC) to develop specific and adapted mineral processing routes (Mulaba-Bafubiandi, 2001). During the conventional diluted sulphuric acid leaching of oxidized cobalt-copper bearing ores commonly referred to as ?heterogenite?, more than 10% cobalt dissolution yield increase was observed in a plant situation (Mwema et al., 2002) when SO2(g) was flushed into the acidified cobalt leaching solution. The present paper attempts to elucidate mechanisms involved which lead to the increase of total cobalt as SO2 is flushed during the leaching of oxidized cobalt bearing minerals. The kinetics of cobalt dissolution as SO2 is flushed into the acidic solution as well as a full characterization, using UV-Visible spectroscopy, of Co2+ and Co3+ species present in the collected leachate are presented while possible effects of the presence of Cu and Fe on the leachability of cobalt bearing minerals present in the oxidised ore will be discussed. In the view of speeding up the leaching process, the mixed cobalt-copper oxidised ores were microwaves pre-processed. Preliminary results were also discussed.

A fundamental model, which considers the subprocesses of particle collection by bubbles in flotation, is applied to two comprehensive flotation surveys in the rougher stages of C3 concentrator, PT Freeport Indonesia. The flotation surveys focused on the collection of: ? cell-by-cell and size-by-size metallurgical, ? cell hydrodynamic, and ? pulp and surface chemistry information. The two surveys were conducted at significantly different feed tonnages, giving rise to significantly different feed particle size distributions, pulp densities and mean pulp residence times. A series of model simulations are performed with the aim of quantifying changes in copper recovery, on both a size-by-size and unsized basis, with changes in values of the hydrodynamic parameters and hydrophobicity of the copper sulfide mineral. This was carried out in an effort to identify the most promising route to increase overall copper recovery in roughing. It was found that by increasing the hydrophobicity of the copper sulfide mineral surfaces it became possible to optimise cell hydrodynamics, which targeted increased fine (-12 µm) copper sulfide mineral recovery but without adversely affecting coarse (+150 µm) copper sulfide mineral recovery.
