Over many decades, numerous feasibility studies have demonstrated, that the production of sulphuric acid remains the most viable option of sulphur recovery from smelter off gas and abatement of SO2 emissions to the atmosphere. This is particularly more pronounced as smaller but more concentrated off-gas flows are to be treated from smelters, and enhanced sulphuric acid processes be-come available. Off-gas handling systems represent a significant capital and operating cost burden to the metallurgical operation. Modern pyrometallurgical smelter processes for sulphide ores based on the use of oxygen-enriched air, produce relatively small off-gas flows with high SO2 concentrations in the smelter gas of 30?60 %-vol. of SO2. This is a prerequisite for substantial cost reductions in the smelter off-gas handling and treatment system. As an alternative to sulphuric acid production, numerous scrubbing concepts with alkali or dual-alkali combinations as well as organic absorbents have been proposed. Also the reduction of the SO2 to elemental sulphur has frequently been studied. Very few of those alternative processes have been built in industrial scale, but all were generally characterized by none sustainable operation due to cost reasons, problems with issues related to chemicals used and by-products or poor availability. Thus the traditional concept of converting the SO2 to sulphuric acid is most common, although regarded as un-economic, but is at least a proven, environmentally sustainable and reliable way of sulphur gas processing. With the high acid price levels these days, operating companies are even able to generate significant revenue with their otherwise ?fatal? acid. Even though smelter gas is available at high SO2 concentrations, in a conventional acid plant one would add large amounts of air to dilute the gas down to a suitable concentration of 12?13 (14) %-vol. SO2. Dealing with higher SO2 concentrations in smelter acid plants is not feasible, as the gas exit temperature of the catalytic oxidation step would exceed the allowable limit for the catalyst. Hence those conventional acid plants are characterised by the use of large equipment, i.e. high capital cost, high energy consumption and limited flexibility. The newly developed LUREC® process can handle off-gas with significantly higher gas concentrations, even in excess of 25 %-vol. SO2. It is entirely based on well-proven equipment and unit operations. The first industrial application, operating with 16?18 %-vol. SO2 will be presented in this paper, along with the fundamentals of the process. It will be demonstrated that the process requires inherently lower capital cost, fewer operating cost, offers better energy recovery and lower emissions as compared to conventional design. While most existing smelter acid plants would have some built-in spare capacity, any significant increase of smelter capacity, say of 30%, can basically not be accommodated without installing an additional parallel new acid plant unit. An add-on LUREC® module can remove any such restriction, while simultaneously de-bottlenecking the existing acid plant. The paper also discusses the present status of the add-on technology for smelter acid plant expansions with respect to technical boundary conditions of different process alternatives as well as economic and environmental aspects. Application of the LUREC® process to modern smelter acid plants operating with high SO2 gas concentration, will lead to a substantial reduction of the specific size of the gas processing equipment and equivalent savings in capital and operating cost. The mining industry remains the backbone of many economies in the developing world. Its resurgence in Ghana since 1989 was driven by the global paradigm which emphasizes private sector-led development as the engine of economic growth in developing countries. The historical importance of mining in the economic development of Ghana is evident in the country?s colonial name, Gold Coast (Akabzaa T. and Darimani A., 2001). Ghana earned $2.5 billion from mineral exports in 2007. 20,000 people are employed in large-scale mining whilst 500,000 are employed in the small-scale sector. Mining contributes about 7% of Ghana?s total corporate tax earnings, 41% of total exports, 12% of revenue collected by the Internal Revenue Service and 5% of Gross Domestic Product (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2008). Gold dominates the mining sector and the country is Africa?s second largest gold producer after South Africa. Surface Mining, which refers to a method of extracting minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrows, requires a large tract of land for its operations (Wikipedia, 2008). There is therefore a continuous divergence of interest between land required for surface mining and other land uses such as farming and housing, among others. In recent years, surface mining has been promoted in many mining countries because of the following reasons: ?Cost considerations compared to underground mining; ?Safety considerations, compared to underground mining; ?Low grade ore which requires processing huge quantities; ?Location of the ore bodies; and ?Competition among gold producing countries for investors. This paper looks at the socio-economic impacts and challenges of surface mining by using Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. Tarkwa, Ghana as a case study. The company has a concession of about 208 sq km located in the heart of the Wassa communities in the Western Region of Ghana and undertakes surface mining like most of the other mining companies in the country. Gold Fields, Tarkwa mine produces 700,000 ounces of gold a year with the potential of increasing this output to 800,000 ounces after its current expansion programme. Some of the effects of surface mining identified were: 1. Relocation/Resettlement of host communities and its negative effects; 2. Disturbance to Flora and Fauna; 3. Disturbance to Sacred Places; 4. Land Degradation; 5. Noise and Air Pollution; and 6. Water Pollution. This paper sought to investigate the measures put in place by the government and the Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. to mitigate the above effects in order to ensure peaceful coexistence between the mining company and its host communities. It concludes that most mining companies presume the provision of socio-economic development in mining communities will lead to the company securing a social license to operate. This however is not true but rather effective community relations combined with socio-economic development. According to Gold Fields Ghana Ltds. model, this involves continuous community engagement, conflict resolution and comprehensive environmental monitoring programme which will all lead to effective community relations. The strategies to ensure socio-economic development involves community development programme, livelihood restoration programme and community training and employment. All these will then lead to sustainable development which will ensure the company?s social license to operate. Gold Fields? model is in line with the principles of responsible mining. With this model, the community feels they are part of the company and the social license of the company is guaranteed. Gold Fields? model, which has been tried and tested for the past five years, could serve as a template with suitable modification for local conditions for other mining countries where surface mines operate.

Additionally, aspects of rectangular furnace design and the features of the copper cooling system for the side wall will be emphasized. Finally a state-of-the-art design tool as well as a new invention to improve slag cleaning technology will be featured, which shows great potentials especially for the PGM and copper related industry. The problem addressed is that of estimating grade differences between sub- divisions of a new gold mining prospect when only borehole results are available. Such differential grade estimates are required in choosing the best area for initial production, and in defining the grade profile over the mine's life for purposes of feasibility studies. It is also often necessary to differentiate between the grades and hence the values of subareas, owned by separate companies, for the purpose of fixing relative share participation percentages in the new mining company. It is shown that exaggerated grade differentials will be obtained from grade estimates of the subareas based only on boreholes within each such subarea, respectively, and that it would be more realistic to apply some 'smoothing', preferably by kriging. This is feasible because the lognormal-de Wijsian model can be used to give an indication of the spatial structure for the boreholes, even where they are spaced far apart; also the degree of 'smoothing' indicated is shown to be relatively insensitive to inaccurate estimates of the relevant semivariogram parameters.

Although backfilling has been in operation for many years, the methods for selecting appropriate slurry dewatering aids have, in some cases, been rather unsophisticated. This has led to many misconceptions regarding the role of the dewatering aid and its various means of application. Testing procedures employed in the correct selection of any practically applied dewatering aid must mirror the actual working processes in which they are to be used. This constraint necessitates the development of complex testing methods when applied to backfilling. The current testing procedures were scrutinized and their various merits noted. From this study a series of testing methods was evolved which incorporate the best aspects of these testing procedures with novel ideas which would eventually result in the correct selection of the dewatering aid. A major consideration in the application of any of these methods is the modus operandi of the backfilling process, and the relevance of the tests to the process. This work attempts to consolidate the testwork performed in the past and suggest new approaches in the correct selection of acceptable dewatering aids for backfilling.

Microseismic monitoring of mining areas is a developing technique, described here for the Belvedere Spinello Mine, southern Italy, where dissolution cavities in the mining area have proved problematic. The preliminary condition for locating seismic impulses has been found to be a reliable seismic ground model. Ground signals are continuously recorded by means of data from piezometric wells, for sinkhole data, and linked gephones, for microseismic data. A computer system has been implemented to collect, analyse and interpret the incoming signals consequently, identification and classification of hypocentres of activity is facilitated, with advantages in terms of safety, preventing harmful side-effects, including rock bursts, and for environmental conservation.

"Understanding the influence of feed material mineral assemblage on spiral separation is paramount for the successful and consistent operation of a spiral plant. Plant stability is required to maintain high recovery of valuable heavy minerals (VHM). Standard material analysis methods used in the heavy mineral industry to evaluate spiral separation behaviour are unable to quantify performance differences in the case of large variations in feed assemblage. This study illustrates a systematic approach to evaluate spiral separation performance. This technique was applied on a four-stage spiral plant. The performance information was used in a circuit simulation to clearly illustrate the importance of correct setting of the spiral splitter position and resulting spiral mass loading to ensure optimal circuit stability and maximum VHM recovery.IntroductionHeavy mineral sands deposits generally consist of naturally fine-grained, free-flowing sand due to the way in which the deposit was formed. The size of the heavy minerals market is roughly 8 Mt/a of zircon and titanium combined (Iluka, 2013). If an average combined feed grade of 5% zircon and titanium and an average combined overall product recovery of 80% are assumed, the resulting run-of-mine feed tons that would require primary spiral beneficiation is 200 Mt/a. The number of spirals required for the processing of this material, assuming 6500 operating hours per annum, an average of 2 t/h per start, and the same number of rougher spirals as other duty spirals, is over 30 000 spirals for the heavy mineral sands business alone. These numbers clearly illustrate the importance of the spiral in the heavy mineral industry.The aim of a spiral plant in the primary processing value chain of a heavy mineral process is to reject non-valuable quartz (a light mineral) from various valuable heavy minerals (VHM). The product from the spiral plant is a heavy mineral concentrate that has a reasonable grade (more than 90% heavy minerals) at a reasonable heavy mineral recovery (greater than 90%). This benchmark is fairly easy to achieve if all the mineral particles are well liberated (as in the case free-flowing sand), the feed is properly deslimed (-45 µm fraction removed to less than 5% of the solids mass), and the spirals are fed within design solids concentration (water to solids ratio) and design spiral load (dry tons per hour per start)."

With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. Platinum metal prices have risen significantly during the past 18 months, and have remained at elevated levels. Driving these bullish prices are sustained jewellery demand, mainly from the Far Eastern markets, and ongoing autocatalyst usage in response to ever more demanding global environmental legislative requirements. Within South Africa, the areas north and south of the Steelpoort River in the Eastern Bushveldare well known for their significant resources of platinum. The bulk of the resources have lain dormant in anticipation of the very situation that is currently occurring in the marketplace. Anglo Platinum is the largest primary platinum producer in the country, and is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the current elevated metal prices and shortfall in supply of platiniferous metals. (Visitors) In sulphide flotation processes, there are two mechanisms by which particles are transferred from the flotation pulp to the concentrate: adhesion to air bubbles and natural flotation, and entrainment in the froth. The entrainment mechanism is particularly important for particles of non-sulphide gangue, which do not absorb collector. The importance of controlling the recovery rate of water was illustrated in plant testwork in which selectivity between valuable sulphides and sulphide gangue, and between valuable sulphides and non-sulphide gangue, was altered by manipulation of variables affecting the water recovery rate. The two mechanisms should be recognized in the development of a control system. Most of the control schemes in operating plants have concentrated on reagent additions, which affect the natural flotation mechanism. Although control of the chemical environment is clearly of paramount importance in flotation, plant tests have shown that control of the variables affecting the entrainment mechanism is also important.

South Africa is the third-largest supplier of coal on the world's export markets after Australia and the USA, and the second-largest supplier of bituminous steam coal following Australia. There are many Similarities between the coal industries of South Africa and those of Australia and the USA, in contrast to the coal industries in Europe. For South Africa to maintain a competitive position on the export markets, it must continue to compete against these two countries. It is therefore important that the performance of the loca1 coal industry should against that of the Australian and US coal industries. Although financial performance is the major criterion, financial information is not easily obtained, and the paper therefore uses employee productivity in the form of tonnes per man year as a means of comparison. The paper reviews recent trends in the level of production and numbers of employees prior to review1ng the productivity. The influence on productivity of some mining methods is highlighted. It is realized that published information (information available within the public domain) can contain anomalies, but every effort is made to compare data of a similar type. Notwithstanding possible inaccuracies, it is shown that South African coal-De productivity lags far behind that of Australia and the USA. The significance of the difference is that the South African coal industry is able to apply overseas practices and procedures that have been shown to give improved performance, and that the increased use of more productive extraction techniques has limited application.

Abstract Several zones with expansive rocks were encountered during construction of two tunnels of the water conduction system for the Chacabuquito Hydropower Plant, located in the Aconcagua river valley of the Chilean Central Andes Mountains, at elevation 1.075 m a.s.l., and 65 km north-northeast of Santiago. The expansive behavior was associated to three different geological features. Firstly with the crossing of important north-south trending faults, with montmorillonitic and caolinitic fillings. Secondly to the presence of zones of rock mass showing a penetrative presence of clay minerals (montmorillonite, illite and caolinite) and penetrative thin veins of ceolites. And thirdly to the hydrothermal alteration of the rock and the consequent generation of clay minerals (predominantly montmorillonite, sericite and minor caolinite). The geological and mechanical characteristics of the expansive rock domains, as well as the field and laboratory reconnaissance and characterization program, are described in the paper together with the bases for design and the guidelines for construction and definitive tunnels support. Resúmè Pendant l’excavation des deux tunels du système d’adduction d’eau pour alimenter la centrale hidroélectrique Chacabuquito, plusieures zones de rochers expansifs ont été découvertes. Ces tunnels sont dans la vallée du fleuve Aconcagua de la Cordillère des Andes du Chili Central, à une altitude aproximée de 1.075m s.m.n. et à 65km vers le nord-nord-ouest de Santiago. Cette conduite expansive est associée à trois différentes caractéristiques géologiques du massif rocheux. Un premier lieu, à l’intersection de plusieures zones de failles, d’orientation nord-sud et subverticales, avec remplissage de rochers désintégrés, montmorillonite, caolinite et sérite. En seconde lieu, a la présence de zones de rochers expansifs, avec des nombreux minces veines de céolite-calcite et aussi des minéraux argileux (montmorillonite, illite et caolinite). Et, dans troisième lieu, dût à la présence de zones d’altération hidrothermale du massif rocheux et la conséquente génération de minéraux de remplacement argileux (surtout sérite, montmorillonite et en plus petit degré, caolinite). The role of research and development In the South African gold-mining industry Presidential Address given by M. D. G. SALAMON, Fellow, Dipl. Eng. (Mining) (Hungary), Ph.D. (Durham) The decision of the gold-mining industry in 1974 to embark on a major ten-year research and development programme was widely publicized at the time. In choosing a subject for this address, I felt almost obliged to use this opportunity to give an account of the progress of this undertaking. On reflection, however, I felt that a simple progress report would not suffice. It seemed important that the programme should be shown in persepective, and that its aims should be outlined to the mining and metallurgical engineering community, many of whom are vitally concerned with the well-being of the gold-mining industry.

The quantitative evaluation of the performance of fill materials placed in gold mine stopes is achieved by (i) measurement of the in-situ load- displacement, or stress-strain, characteristics of the materials; (ii) an objective comparison between the observed fill performance and that predicted from suitable computer modelling techniques; and (iii) objectively comparing conditions in backfilled and conventional stopes. Considerable problems have been experienced with the development of sufficiently robust instrumentation which can be installed within filled pad- docks and give reliable information over a long period of time. However, at most mines where backfill performance is being monitored, it has been possible to correlate stress measurements within the filled paddocks with strain measurements adjacent to the paddocks. The resultant stress-strain curves agree relatively well with those determined in the laboratory. Measurements in the hangingwall strata of filled and unfilled stopes indicate that the placement of fill does reduce the amount of inelastic convergence due to bed separation. Moreover, in some stopes, the rate of convergence with respect to face advance does reduce to that of the theoretical elastic convergence. Quantification of changes in the conditions at the stope face due to placement of fill has proved difficult. Observations indicate that, provided the fill is placed close to the face (- 5 m), and adequate temporary face support is used, conditions in filled panels are superior. In addition, in filled panels the damage caused by a rockburst in the stope and, particularly, in gullies is generally much less than would be expected in an unfilled stope. To quantify these improvements, parameters such as stope height, face advance and the frequency of falls of ground are being monitored.

The comparison study on adsorption of potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX) and sodium (nbutyl) dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC) on sperrylite mineral forms a basis in understanding the floatability improvement and paves a way for the design of collectors that may impact on a wide range of arsenide minerals. This study used a computational density functional theory (DFT) and experimental microcalorimetry approach to determine the adsorption energies of PNBX and SNBDTC collectors onto a sperrylite mineral surface. From a computational aspect, we considered the most stable surface plane of (100) surface, which had been found to give the lowest surface energy, compared to the other surface planes. It was observed that the PNBX and SNBDTC preferred to bridge on the As and Pt atoms through the S atoms. These findings showed that the collector adsorbed on the surface through both Pt and As atoms and indicated that the As atoms were significantly active in the adsorptions. We found that the adsorption energies were in the order: SNBDTC (–278.38 kJ/mol) > PNBX (–270.92 kJ/mol), indicating that the dithiocarbamate had stronger exothermic adsorption than the xanthate. From the microcalorimetry test it was also found that the SNBDTC was more exothermic than the PNBX and the adsorption energies were: SNBDTC (–473.50 kJ/mol) > PNBX (–331.13 kJ/mol). These results showed that the nitrogen atom in the SNBDTC collector had a great influence on the adsorption strength of the collector on the mineral surface. This is due to the electron deposition behaviour of nitrogen atoms compared to the electron withdrawing character of oxygen and as such the SNBDTC showed better collecting ability than the PNBX. These results paved the way for the design of collectors for sperrylite and other arsenide minerals and suggested that nitrogen in a collector may significantly improve the ability of the collector for improved recovery. A fuel cell is an electrochemical engine that converts the chemical energy of a fuel, such as hydrogen, and an oxidant, such as oxygen, directly into electricity. The emerging fuel cell industry may represent a major opportunity for the global platinum mining industry. This is because low temperature fuel cell systems use platinum group metals as catalysts. Fuel cell vehicles may become the most important driver of future platinum demand within years of their commercialization. A great number of factors impact on and drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicle innovation. Such drivers range from energy security to environmental concerns and the technological development of fuel cells and systems. Such factors and drivers of fuel cell vehicle diffusion are combined with the generic ?body of knowledge? on ?technology forecasting? and ?diffusion of innovation? to design a framework that provides a holistic approach to the analysis of this complex enterprise. An attempt is made in this paper to address the following questions: Which types of fuel cells require platinum group metals? Which types of fuel cells will achieve dominant design status? Will fuel cell vehicles diffuse successfully? How big will the impact of successful fuel cell vehicle diffusion be on future platinum demand? How well do fuel cell vehicles compete with incumbent technologies such as spark-ignited and compression-ignited internal combustion engine-driven vehicles? How soon will oil depletion start to drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicles? How important is hydrogen as a fuel? What impact does the inadequate hydrogen fuelling infrastructure have on fuel cell vehicle diffusion? The paper contains some initial results of a research project that has the aim of producing a schedule of future platinum demand generated from fuel cell vehicles. This Congresss, organized by IFAPA, has opened a window for the Ferroalloy Community of India, the up-coming Asian Tiger, to register their strength and weakness to the world forum with the principal objectives of evolving long and short-term optimum road-maps for development. It is to be reckoned that India is poised to be a steel giant by 2020 when it is envisaged that the steel production may reach a level of 120 million tons of which significant proportion has to be in the categories of alloy and special steels, requiring standard and high grade ferroalloys. Keeping the above objective in view, the theme of this Congress has been rightfully designed as ?Innovations in Ferro Alloy Industry.? This Congress has also earned a distinction of more than eighty papers, finally selected for inclusion in the Proceedings. More than 100 internationally and nationally reputed experts in the field of ferroalloys (technology and manufacturing practices as well as world scenario) have been approached for critical review of abstracts and selection for the proceedings. It needs to be mentioned without the cooperation received from ICFA the high standard of INFACON could not have been assured. The papers are suitably grouped under seventeen heads, starting from world situation to production and operation followed by present and future technologies and finally to modelling and simulation. It is a Herculean task to the Technical Committee to fit these papers in proper sequence. The Commit-tee members kept no stone unturned to ensure the cogency with the subject matters and at the same timekeeping the flexibility of interests of the participant, especially in the context of three parallel sessions. The Proceedings containing only refereed papers of high quality, will serve the entire gamut of ferroalloy industry and will also highlight the present status of concerned countries. The areas of attention to make the industries globally competitive and at the same time laying emphasis on the prevailing practices, will help the industry leaders to formulate an appropriate global approach. Following the break-through step, instilled by INFACON XI, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in searchable electronic CD-ROM format. I, as the Chairman of the Technical Committee would like to express thanks and high appreciation to all the Committee members for their whole hearted efforts in all respects without which it would not have been possible to complete these proceedings in the scheduled time. Technical Committee desires to place on record their gratitude to Organising Committee for their synergic cooperation all through in successfully executing multifarious tasks, associated with such a grand international technical Congress.

It is shown that the safety factor as calculated traditionally by use of the tributary-area theory is not valid for high-extraction methods of coal mining. An alternative approach is suggested in which the pillar loads are calculated more realistically for the period during which pillar extraction is in progress. This safety factor, which is known as the Extraction Safety Factor (ESF), can be used in determining the effects of strong layers in the overburden on pillar sizes.
