The Northern Cape Province in South Africa has high levels of annual direct normal solar irradiance and reserves of zinc (Zn) ores. The question arises as to the benefits of integrating renewable solar energy into the beneficiation routes of these reserves. The paper evaluates a novel flowsheet for the production and beneficiation of Zn in this region, maximising localised solar energy as a source for both electricity and process heat. Solar variability is discussed and the cost and benefits of thermal storage in the flowsheets are evaluated by its influence on the levelised costs of electricity and process energy over the project life-time at a possible implementation site. The results of the developed scoping model showed that solar photovoltaic integration to provide electricity for electrowinning without battery storage can lead to more than 10% cost saving on electricity over the lifetime of the project. Additional savings potential was identified when battery storage was included to enable the solar PV system to supply electricity during peak tariff periods. The solar thermal case showed the most promise with savings of 70% on heating costs for casting, while solar PV electricity without storage resulted in a 16% cost saving on heating for casting over the lifetime of the project. Solar PV electricity generation resulted in the avoidance of more than 20% of CO2 emissions from grid electricity use. Solar thermal heating can avoid up to 80% of the CO2 emissions associated with grid electricity use for remelting of Zn cathodes for casting. The coordination compound tetrakis(1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanediona to)zirconium(IV), [Zr(DBM)4], (DBM = dibenzoyl methane/1,3- diphenyl-1,3-propanedionol) was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Zr(DBM)4] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c (a = 24.769(4) Å, b = 10.216(5) Å, c = 19.314(4) Å, and = 101.541(5)°). The coordination geometry around the zirconium atom, formed by the eight O-donating atoms of the four -diketonates, is found to be a near-perfect square antiprism. Crystal packing is stabilized by C?H... interactions throughout the crystal lattice. This structure is a noteworthy example of the application of ambient condition synthesis of zirconium compounds in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) as reaction and crystallization solvent, highlighting the possibilities of aerobic condition metal purification through chelation.

South Africa has one of the largest Cr-related industries in the world and generates large amounts of Cr-containing smelter dusts. It is normal practice to scrub Cr from the furnace off-gas in water, and to recover the Cr by adsorption, followed by recycling of the loaded adsorbent into the furnace. A study was conducted to find a low-cost adsorbent that is capable of removing sufficient Cr from the solutions generated by scrubbing. The test work focused on the evaluation of different clay minerals (attapulgite, bentonite, and kaolinite) as adsorbents for Cr. Cr(VI) could only be adsorbed after prereduction with e.g. ascorbic acid (ASA). An 80% removal of Cr(VI) could be achieved from a solution containing 20 mg/L Cr using bentonite clay after reduction with ASA. Attapulgite and kaolinite adsorbed less than 55% Cr after reduction with ASA. Both ASA and ferrous salts were found to be suitable reducing agents. The use of acid mine drainage (AMD) was also investigated as a low-cost alternative reducing agent, as AMD usually contains iron. The Cr(VI) reduction potential of the AMD was determined by redox titration against a solution containing 50 mg/L Cr(VI). Studies show that AMD can potentially be used as a reducing agent in a Cr removal process if it is available on site.

An investigation was conducted into the reactions between the slag system MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2(AI2O3) and the alloy system Mn-Fe-Si-(C). Synthetic slags representative of plant melts and a plant alloy were reacted in alumina crucibles at temperatures of 1400°C, 1450°C, 1550°C, and 1600°C. In similar experiments, slags were used that comprised a South African manganese ore with various amounts of lime and several synthetic alloys with various silicon contents and manganese-to-iron ratios. These experiments were conducted in a vertical molybdenum-wound resistance furnace with full temperature control. Slag-to-alloy ratios were also varied during the tests. The rate of reduction of Mn.O3 and the MnO from the slag by the silicon in the alloy was extremely rapid, most of the reaction being completed within five minutes. The strongly exothermic nature of the reaction resulted in considerable generation of heat at the slag-alloy interface, causing convectional stirring of the contents of the crucible and promoting the rate of reaction. Equilibrium was usually attained after fifteen minutes. The major limitation governing the recovery of manganese is the need for the silicon content of the alloy to meet a maximum specification of 2 per cent. Higher concentrations of silicon in the final alloy of between 8 and 12 per cent favour good recoveries of manganese from the slag, but, since such an alloy is not salable, lower recoveries must apparently be tolerated. In alloys of 2 per cent silicon, low activities of the silicon are responsible for poor recoveries of manganese. The activity of MnO in the slag can be increased by moderate additions of CaO and small amounts of MgO, i.e., by an increase in the basicity of the slag.

"Lump coals are currently employed to replace part of coke in the COREX melter-gasifier for ironmaking. In order to optimize the process, the pyrolysis kinetics of Datong coal used in the COREX process was studied. A sectioning method is proposed to overcome certain shortcomings of traditional methods for studying the pyrolysis of coal. Based on the sectioning method and the characteristics of the coal pyrolysis process, the temperature range was divided into three intervals. In the first, the adsorbed gas and water of crystallization were removed; in the second, the coal was transformed into semi-coke; and finally, the semi-coke was further coked. Three models of reaction were then established to study the different stages of the pyrolysis process: an interfacial chemical reaction model, a random pore model, and internal diffusion with shrinking volume. The results showed that the experimental data fitted the models well, with all correlation coefficients (r2) exceeding 0.97. Finally, the mechanisms of reaction and kinetic parameters for each temperature range were derived, which laid a necessary foundation for optimizing the usage of non-coking coal in the COREX process. IntroductionIn view of environmental concerns and the shortage of good-quality coking coal, the COREX process was designed as a new ironmaking technology, attracting wide attention (Fang et al., 2005). In this process, lump coal and a small quantity of coke are directly charged into the melter-gasifier, where a high-quality reducing gas is generated for the reduction of the iron ore (Kumar et al., 2009). In contrast to the conventional blast furnace (BF) process, non-coking lump coal is used as the reducing agent and as the energy source, and the iron charge consists of lump ore and/or pellets, which results in the elimination of the coke oven and sintering plant as well as a decrease in investment (Kumar et al., 2009; Liu et al., 2012).Although the COREX process has made great progress, in current production practice the energy consumption greatly exceeds that of the BF, and it requires a certain amount of coke to maintain permeability of the semi-coke bed (Wang et al., 2008). In addition, the process consumes a lot of good-quality lump ore and lump coal. The pyrolysis of coal is the first step in most coal conversion processes, such as carbonization, gasification, and combustion (Aboyade et al., 2013). The reaction behaviour of lump coals in the COREX melter-gasifier is crucial, as it determines energy utilization and gas composition, as well as the metallurgical properties and particle size of the semi-coke produced (Prachethan et al., 2011; Zhang et al., 2014). In order to optimize the process and improve its competitiveness, the pyrolysis kinetics of Datong coal used in Baosteel’s COREX C-3000 facility was studied."

"SynopsisThe application of the attainable region (AR) technique to the analysis of ball milling is currently limited to batch data. This paper introduces the use of the technique to continuous milling.To this end, an industrial open milling circuit processing a platinum ore was surveyed. Samples were collected and later characterized by means of laboratory batch testing. On site, several milling parameters were varied systematically so as to collect data for modelling purposes. These paramters included ball filling, slurry concentration, and feed flow rate. After data analysis, a simulation model of the open milling circuit was developed under MODSIM®, a modular simulator for mineral processing operations. The mill was then simulated and the data generated was analysed within the AR framework.Initial findings reveal an opportunity to gain valuable insight by studying milling using the AR technique. From an exploratory perspective and inasmuch as this study is concerned, feed flow rate, ball size, and ball filling were identified as being pivotal for the optimization of open ballmilling circuits. Mill speed, on the other hand, had only a limited effect on the production of particles in the size range -75 +10 µm.IntroductionGlasser and Hildebrandt (1997) propounded the attainable region (AR) as a technique for the analysis of chemical engineering reactor systems. Results have since been produced and tested on both the laboratory and pilot scales. The method results in a graphical description of chemical reactions by considering the fundamental processes taking place in the system, rather than the equipment. From the plotted graphs, the process and the reactors can be synthesized optimally into a flow sheet.The use of the AR method still has a long way to go as far as mineral processing is concerned. For instance, several articles have reported the application of the AR technique to ball milling: Khumalo et al. (2006, 2007, 2008); Khumalo (2007); Metzger et al. (2009, 2012); Metzger (2011); Katubilwa et al. (2011); Hlabangana et al. (2012). Their main shortcoming has been the exclusive use of laboratory batch grinding data.To address this deficiency, Mulenga and Chimwani (2013) proposed a way by which the technique could be extended to continuous milling. In effect, the batch milling characteristics of a platinum-bearing ore (Chimwani et al., 2013) were used and scaled up to an open milling circuit. Then, with simplifying assumptions, an attempt was made to optimize the residence time of particles inside the mill. Later, Chimwani et al. (2014a) presented some optimization examples involving various milling parameters. The sequence of published articles then paved the way for the study of industrial milling systems with the AR methodology."

A potential new rare earth extraction process has been suggested (Lazo, et al., 2017) (Lazo, et al., 2018) based on converting the rare earth elements to solid phase rare earth oxalates in an oxalic acid leach. Oxalic acid consumption is a significant issue in the process, therefore to improve the viability of this proposed new extraction method, a process to recover oxalate from the leach solution and recycle oxalic acid is required. A review of the literature and confirmation through thermodynamic analysis of the potential options identified precipitation of calcium or ferrous oxalate as the best potential options. The use of metallic iron to both provide ferrous ions as a precipitant and reduce ferric ions in solution would provide the most economical option, however slow kinetics and unreacted iron created significant issues with this process. The direct use of ferrous ions, while faster and more efficient, produced a precipitate with relatively poor solid/liquid handling characteristics and would require an intermediate stage utilising calcium in regenerating the oxalate. Utilising calcium chloride and oxide created very similar precipitates with better physical properties than the ferrous oxalate and that a reasonable proportion of the oxalate could be recovered before neutralisation of the solution induced precipitation of other phases such as iron oxy-hydroxides and calcium phosphate. The produced calcium oxalate was easily converted to oxalic acid and gypsum via immersion in sulphuric acid. It was also found that there is a significant loss of oxalic acid due to factors other than rare earth oxalate precipitation during leaching. This leads to a maximum oxalate recovery in the range of 50 %.

"The casthouse floor has always been one of the most dangerous working places on a blast furnace or a ferro-alloy/nonferrous furnace. Apart from working in an atmosphere including toxic gases, fumes, and dust, the workers have to perform hard and heavy manual work close to runners and ladles filled with hot liquid metal and slag.Before the invention and installation of tapping equipment the tap-holes were opened and closed manually. Opening was done by means of steel bars and sledgehammers, whereas the tap-hole was closed by repeatedly ramming small amounts of clay or refractory material into the tap-hole, again with the help of long, heavy bars. In addition, on blast furnaces the blast had to be stopped, since it was impossible to close the tap-hole properly against the blast furnace pressure. This stoppage of the blast resulted in regular losses of production. Around 1900 a major change in technology occurred. Samuel W. Vaughen, superintendent of the blast furnace department of the Cambria Iron company at Johnstown, Pennsylvania (USA), invented the first clay gun in 1895 (Wiley, 1896) (Figure 1)."

Metallurgical simulation and evaluation of the resource efficiency of whole production processes are of key importance for impact assessment, in terms of environment and resources. Exergy is a measure of resource consumption, taking into account energy, raw materials, water, and chemicals; which allows for the evaluation of different technologies to find the most resource efficient and environmentally friendly process. This paper compares the sustainability for production of rare earth magnets from primary and secondary resources through an exergetic evaluation of the production process, in addition to traditional life cycle assessment (LCA). The methodology makes use of simulation tools for tracking material flow and resources used, based on thermodynamic laws, from ore exploitation to magnet production and recycling. It highlights areas with the greatest potential for improvements in terms of resource consumption and environmental impact generation, having a thermodynamic-validated flowsheet for primary and secondary production of NdFeB magnets, present in several low-carbon technologies, such as wind turbines, electric vehicles, and cooling systems. It demonstrates the minimum exergy destruction for magnet production, through an irreversibility breakdown chart, showing where irreversible material and energy losses occur. Results show that CO2-equivalent emissions for producing NdFeB permanent magnets from primary resources could be twice as high when compared to magnets produced from recycling technologies. The theoretical maximum exergetic efficiency for primary production is 57.61%, whereas for permanent magnets produced from secondary resources, the exergetic efficiency reaches up to 82.89%. Two magnet recycling technologies were evaluated, i.e. in acidic medium and via hydrogen decrepitation, and it was observed that their exergetic efficiency and environmental impact performed better than production from primary resources. Broken Hill Mines-1968, edited by M. Radmanovich and J. T. Woodcock, published by The Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Melbourne, 613 pages. Price $A15. This volume, containing some 65 technical papers, was produced for the 1968 annual conference of the Australasian Institute held at Broken Hill to mark the 75th Anniversary of that Institute, founded at Broken Hill in 1893. That conference also coincided with the 85th Anniversary of the discovery of the Broken Hill mining field. This closely reflects the position in this country, where the Witwatersrand gold fields were discovered in 1886, and our South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will in March, 1969 be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the forerunners of our Institute. There is a comprehensive report of the geology of the Broken Hill area and the mineralogy of the ore body, and there are reports on the mining methods and the metallurgical procedures which have been developed over 85 years of operation of one of the great mining fields of the world. The value of most of the papers is enhanced by a large number of illustrations and photographs. An early section covers the academic and practical aspects of rock mechanics, prospecting, and exploration techniques are described in some detail. A third of the volume is devoted to mining, with papers on 26 aspects. The breadth of the coverage gives an indication of much specialized development, research, and consequent maturity in all departments. The detailed treatment of metallurgical aspects such as sizings of individual mineral particles throughout the milling stages and the development of an on-stream analysis system for lead will commend this volume to the specialist. The committee responsible for the production of this volume, which brings together much information previously only to be found after searching through numerous publications, are to be congratulated on a well produced comprehensive review of many aspects of the mining and metallurgical fields. Technology is advancing at a rate that makes it extremely difficult for the mining industry to keep pace. Many advances occur within a given piece of technology and often this is missed by the disciplines that could have gained advantage by its implementation. Often this may have been simply an aspect of cost exceeding benefit. However, there are some technologies that potentially have such a far-reaching impact on the mining industry that the benefits simply outweigh the cost. The application of 3D laser scanning in the mining industry has the potential of taking the concept of 'Google maps?' underground. This presents an opportunity where the virtual world of underground can be traversed with relative ease and many aspects of measurements could be obtained without having to visit the working place again, potentially saving countless man-hours and still delivering precision work with significant savings in downtime, stoppages, and exposure to safety incidents. Anglo American Platinum maintains its competitive advantage though the review and application of appropriate technology. This paper describes the 3D laser scanning trial at one of Anglo American Platinum's new shafts, and goes on to show the benefits encountered through the application and the involvement of the various MRM disciplines.

This study investigated the corrosion rates of various steel types and coatings used for friction rock stabilisers in a deep-level gold mine under diverse underground environmental conditions. Testing was conducted in situ within ramps, intake airways, and exhaust airways, and through simulated laboratory experiments. Results revealed that environmental variations significantly influence the corrosion performance of different materials and coatings. Duplex coatings, made up of galvanised steel with an organic paint layer, demonstrated the highest corrosion resistance. Zinc-based coatings provided moderate protection, while 3CR12 stainless steel and uncoated S420 carbon steel exhibited comparatively poor resistance under both aqueous and atmospheric conditions.

Ion exchange is widely used in hydrometallurgical operations for the recovery and purification of valuable metals. Special chelating resins have a high affinity for specific elements, allowing the selective removal of low levels of impurities from a background of highly concentrated valuable metal. Solvent-impregnated resins have been added to this group more recently, expanding the treatment options. These products find application in the purification of cobalt-rich liquor prior to the production of high-purity metal or metal salts. Impurities in copper-cobalt circuits that are typically targeted by ion exchange include iron, uranium, copper, zinc, nickel, bismuth, and antimony. Ion-exchange resins can also be used to treat tailings, thereby recovering additional valuable metal and improving the Environmental and Social Governance credentials of the operation. The abrasiveness of a mineral or rock is an extremely important topic in the mining industry and is generally measured by the Bond abrasion index (AI). However, to determine such an index by the Bond test requires 1,600 g of sample with particle sizes ranging from ½” to ¾”, which are not available in certain situations, such as ore prospecting, drilling, and geometallurgical studies. In order to investigate the abrasiveness of smaller-sized sample materials, a modified LCPC test was developed, which allows testing fine materials (i.e., 1.0 mm or smaller) to predict wear in ore processing circuits and anticipate possible failures resulting from changes in abrasive characteristics of the ore being processed. The results for 16 different materials indicated a good correlation with the AI and the modified LCPC, resulting in a reliable alternative for the AI. To achieve maximum efficiency in any purification stage, the flotation should be continued until the concentrate grade reaches the feed grade. During sampling from rougher cells of the Iranian Sarcheshmeh copper concentrator plant 1, it was revealed that the concentrate grade of the last five cells of rougher circuit was close to feed grade. Therefore, it was suggested that the concentrate of the aforementioned cells be mixed with rougher feed. In this study, one of eight rougher circuit rows was selected and evaluated. The floatability tests were performed to compare the flotation behaviour of rougher feed and mixture of concentrate of the last five cells with rougher feed in the laboratory scale by a tree analysis process. The results showed that mixing of rougher last five cell concentrate with feed has a detrimental effect on flotation efficiency that leads to a 3% decrease in recovery. Minera La Parreña, S.A. de C.V., Milpillas operation is an underground mine designed to process 8 352 tons of ore per day for the recovery of copper through crushing, heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning facilities. In order to optimize copper recovery during leaching, the ore is crushed to 13 mm and subjected to primary sampling every 15 minutes for metallurgical accounting. At the same particle size, primary sample goes to secondary sampling and then, the secondary sample is crushed to 2 mm before tertiary sampling. The tertiary sample is sent to laboratory where a final sample is obtained and pulverized to 106 microns for copper assay. This paper shows a review of sampling strategy focused on minimizing or eliminating sampling errors and an experiment designed to determine copper head grade profile as well as the best sampling frequency.
