"TiCl4 slurry containing valuable metals is an unavoidable by-product of the titanium ore chlorination process. The recovery of these valuable metals, which include titanium, niobium, tantalum, and aluminum, is an urgent issue to tackle in the titanium industry. The results of this investigation show that the valuable metallic elements can be recovered from the slurry by evaporation in a sealed container and leaching with dilute hydrochloric acid. After evaporation at 200°C for 60 minutes, nearly 99% of the titanium was recovered in the form of TiCl4, which was formed by the reaction of the TiO2 in the slurry with AlCl3. After evaporation, metals like niobium, aluminum, and tantalum remained in the residue. By leaching with 2.1 mol/L HCl at a L/S ratio of 6:1 mL/g at 80°C for 60 minutes, the soluble metals, such as aluminum, iron, and copper were all removed from the residue, and the niobium and tantalum were further enriched in the leach residue. A concentrate containing 53.40 wt% Nb and 5.57 wt% Ta was obtained by washing the leach residue with dilute aqueous ammonia under stirring. A potential waste water purifying agent containing 263.75 g/L AlCl3 was produced by purifying the leaching solution with Al(OH)3 and modified polyacrylamide. IntrodutionTitanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) is an important intermediate in titanium metallurgy that is widely used in the production of titania and titanium sponge (Akhtar, Xiong, and Pratsinis, 1991). In conventional titanium metallurgical processes, high-titanium materials such as synthetic rutile and high-titanium slag are reacted with chlorine to produce TiCl4 in a fluidized-bed furnace. Accompanying elements, such as Al, Nb, and Fe also react with chlorine to form chlorides, which are mixed with gaseous TiCl4 (Anderson, 1917). In the condensation process, gaseous TiCl4 is refrigerated and high-boiling-point chlorides are precipitated in the liquid TiCl4 to form a slurry containing 50~60 wt% TiCl4 (Wang, Xiang, and Wang, 2012).Various methods have been proposed to recover TiCl4 from the slurry, including microwave heating and spray drying (Wang, Xiang, and Wang, 2012, Wang et al., 2010a). To date, the only way to recover the TiCl4 is to return the slurry to the fluidized-bed furnace. However, this causes fluctuations in the temperature in the furnace, resulting in incomplete reaction between titanium-rich materials and chlorine. Therefore, the slurry is often rinsed with water and neutralized by adding lime, which caused serious environmental pollution and wastes a valuable resource (Roy, Bhatt, and Rajagopal, 2003)."

A group of recently developed co-collectors, activators, depressants and frothers are described together with a summary of results measured on base metal sulphide ores.

"Previously, we upgraded and implemented two gamma activation assay (GAA) systems designed to analyse the gold content in raw ores at Zarafshan laboratory, Uzbekistan, and achieved a detection limit of less than 0.05 g/t under actual industrial conditions. Having started to design a fully modern, industrial GAA system for mining companies, this paper analyses the advantages, disadvantages, and special features of all major system components that can influence the sensitivity and accuracy of the analysis. The results of a study to optimize the detector geometry and sample size are presented and the performances of the linear electron accelerator, detector array, and sample transportation system of a modern, industrial GAA system for analysing gold, silver, and rare earth elements are considered. IntroductionGamma activation analysis (GAA) has considerable potential as a future replacement for traditional fire assay analysis in gold mining (Hoffman, Clark, and Yeager, 1998; Morse, 1977; Bourmistenko, 1986, 1981; Sammut, 2016; Tickner et al., 2017). The essence of GAA is to irradiate ore samples with high-energy gamma quanta generated by an electron linear accelerator (LINAC) and then to use a gamma spectrometer to detect the induced activity of the excited gold nuclei. The advantages of this method are discussed in detail elsewhere (Hoffman, Clark, and Yeager, 1998; Morse, 1977; Bourmistenko, 1986, 1981; Sammut, 2016; Tickner et al., 2017), where it is shown that GAA is uniquely suited to analysing ore samples when mining for gold, other precious metals, and accompanying elements.These advantages were realized in three industrial GAA laboratories that were commissioned in Zarafshan, Uzbekistan in 1977, in Magadan, Russia in 1979, and in Batagay, Russia in 1986 (Bourmistenko, 1986; Nii Tekhnicheskoy Fiziki I Avtomatiki, n.d). In 1989, a fourth industrial GAA laboratory was commissioned at a gold mine in Tommot, Russia. However, the project was subsequently halted due to economic reasons (Moshkov and Tjamisov, 2017). Currently, only the laboratory of the Muruntau mine in Zarafshan, Uzbekistan is in operation. The gamma activation method for gold determination is widely applicable at this mine owing to its high productivity and low cost of analysis. An outstanding aspect is the performance of more than one million analyses per year."

The necessity of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit the impact of anthropogenic climate change means that all industrial processes should investigate their options towards decarbonization. Iron, steelmaking, aluminium, and cement production produce the most industrial emissions. Although most research focuses on decarbonizing these industries, minerals processing industries must be decarbonized to achieve net zero emissions goals by 2050. Incorporating renewable energy sources and avoiding the combustion of fossil fuels are two ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This paper reports on the results from a dynamic process model developed to investigate the feasibility of concentrating solar thermal pretreatment of manganese ores to pretreat carbonate-rich manganese ores for increased ferromanganese smelter productivity and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The results indicate that pretreated ores reduce the energy requirement for smelting significantly for some ores and lowers total carbon dioxide emissions by 13 to 19% compared to the traditional smelting route. A high-level economic evaluation shows that solar thermal treatment is financially viable for low cryptomelane, high braunite ore that is common in the Kalahari Manganese Field.

This study investigates the transformation of pyrolytic spent tyre-derived char and crumb rubber into high-performance activated carbon chars for industrial wastewater remediation. Utilising an in-house macro-thermogravimetric analysis system under an argon atmosphere, spent tyre-derived activated carbon char were synthesised via physical temperature activation and aqua regia demineralisation. Comprehensive characterisation using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, revealed a predominantly amorphous structure with nanoscale crystallites (~1 nm) and active surface functional groups. Proximate analysis confirmed that both crumb rubber and leached tyre crumb rubber with aqua regia derivatives achieved favourable compositions (ash ≈ 9.6%; fixed carbon ≈ 84%), comparable to commercial activated carbon (AC). At an optimal activation temperature of 850°C, the char of tyre crumb leached with aqua regia variant exhibited a significant surface area of 300 m²/g. Crucially, the tyre crumb char produced at 850°C variant developed a pore volume of 0.8 cm³/g—effectively doubling that of commercial activated carbon (0.4 cm³/g)—facilitating the sequestration of large organic molecules. In application tests using high-strength starch wastewater, char of tyre crumb leached with aqua regia and tyre crumb char, both produced at 850°C, achieved total organic carbon removal efficiencies of 60% and 50%, respectively, bridging the performance gap between waste-derived and commercial adsorbents. These findings validate waste tyres as a viable, low-cost precursor for industrial-grade adsorbents, offering a sustainable circular economy route for tyre valorisation and reduced industrial disposal costs. Future research will focus on kinetic modelling and the recovery of zinc from spent tyre-derived activated carbon char residues.

Insurers are hesitant to provide coverage for Open cast Pit side wall collapse, and even the consequent damage to plant and equipment in the pit as well as the resulting interference with the mining operations. After a general introduction to relevant principles of insurance, this paper addresses some of the major reasons for that reluctance based upon the authors? extensive claims experience, examines what limited coverage can still be obtained and looks to the future possibilities. Confidentiality of sources and examples referred to in this presentation is a natural imperative so that a bibliography is not provided but reference is made to relevant sample insurance policy wordings.

Certain degrees of safety, economic, and financial risk are implicit in any mining operation. At Thabazimbi Mine, slope stability was one of the major sources of risk, largely due to data uncertainties. Consequently, a risk-based approach in slope design was followed. On 6 June 2015, a slope failure occurred in Thabazimbi Mine’s Kumba pit, involving approximately 65 million tonnes of rock failing into the pit and the valley below. Although the failed mass moved rapidly and resulted in a run-out distance of approximately 900 m, controls had been put in place to successfully evacuate all personnel. Risk assessment during the onset of failure supported the decision to not compromise the safety of personnel in any way, leading to unavoidable equipment loss. This contribution presents the failure as a case study in the context of a risk-based approach to slope design as well as the importance of implementing geotechnical controls to effectively manage slope instability risk. Furthermore, a comprehensive back-analysis was performed, on a fully constrained 3D model, utilising 3DEC software, to gain insights into the failure mechanism. In conclusion, lessons from the Thabazimbi slope failure are valuable as they demonstrate the importance of following a risk-based approach in slope design to effectively manage safety and financial risk in open pit mines.

This paper describes mining industry funded research that is being undertaken to address the critical gaps and uncertainties in our knowledge so that we can develop new approaches and create more effective ways for predicting the reliability of rock slopes in large open pit mines. It is envisaged that this research will not only lead to more effective pit slope design but further reduce the potential for unforseen geotechnical risks by enabling the geotechnician to communicate the risks more effectively with management and to optimise site specific control measures. To achieve this, several research tasks are in hand. The first is to accurately represent the structured rock mass with a 3D computer model (Siromodel) that creates polyhedral blocks from structural distribution data characterised by position, orientation and persistence. Siromodel is being coupled with particle flow and other numerical codes to evaluate how the structured rock mass deforms in the stress environment of an open pit and how a candidate failure surface may propagate through the dilating rock mass along the path of the least shear and/or tension resistance. A beta version of the Siromodel software has been distributed to 20 Sponsor mine sites for technical evaluation. The end state is to develop methods of analysis that characterise the reliability of a described candidate surface, and the probability of the candidate surface propagating to failure, recognising that the rock mass strength may well be defined in a different way than before.

This Spotlight gives a brief summary of the proposed 1991 tax amendments of relevance to mines and mining houses. It should be read together with the author's article South African mining tax in the 1990's', which appeared in the August 1990 issue of this Journal. A number of tax amendments of relevance to the mining industry were proposed by the Minister of Finance in his March 1991 budget speech. In addition, certain other measures that may be implemented were set out in the budget review document released at the same time. A word of caution is necessary: these measures will become law only if and when they are enacted in the appropriate legislation. When this legislation is tabled in June, it may not contain all of the measures discussed below, some of the measures may appear in modified form, and other measures not discussed at the time of the budget may well appear. Unless otherwise stated, the 1991 tax amendments will affect companies with years of assessment ending in the twelve-month period to 31st March, 1992.

At the outset may I express my sincere appreciation to the organisers of this Congress for their kind invitation to me to participate in the plenary session. May I also thank the CMMI for inviting me to be their fifth distinguished lecturer. This is a signal honour and one which is sincerely appreciated by my Group and myself. The subject of gold is a very emotive one. It conjures up different images in the minds of a wide variety of people. For many of us it is very simply the ultimate metal. In ancient times gold was sought after and treasured; it was the chosen metal for adornment and many of the best preserved artefacts of that time were hand-fashioned from gold which had been won by primitive mining techniques. Gold's rarity and its value was recognised by those who fashioned the earliest gold coins thus underlining gold's special place as a store of value.

Soundless chemical demolition agents (SCDAs) are proving to be the future of sustainable and environmental-friendly mining. These expansive chemicals become critical when there is a need to break rock close to communities, environmentally sensitive areas, and critical structures and infrastructure. Unlike explosives, the SCDAs do not generate air-blast, ground vibrations, flyrock, noise, dust, and noxious fumes, which can negatively affect the environment, surrounding communities, sensitive areas, and critical structures and infrastructure. Over the years, several types of SCDA products have been used successfully in the civil and construction industries for the demolition of old and dilapidated buildings near vibrations and environmentally sensitive areas. They have also been used to fragment boulders in the mining and construction industries. However, to date, no study has investigated the applications of soundless chemical demolition on a large-scale in opencast mines. Therefore, this study evaluated whether soundless chemical demolition can break large volumes of in situ rock. This was done by conducting five trials using Nex-Pand soundless chemical demolition agents in four different surface mining sites. Trial 1 was unsuccessful as it was unable to break the rock due to the large confinement between the drilled holes and the use of a hole diameter that was 182% larger than recommended. Trial 2 was a success as it was able to fracture the rock with a crack width that reached 110 mm after 72 hours. Trial 3 generated cracks at the biggest hole diameter of 102 mm. The cracks developed and ceased to increase after 96 hours at a crack width of 100 mm. Trial 4 achieved the smallest crack width due to a very competent rock compared to the other sites. Trial 5 generated cracks at a slower rate than other trials because of the use of Nex-Pand powder at lower ambient temperatures than recommended. These trials proved that soundless chemical demolition agents can replace explosives in areas closer to sensitive infrastructure and communities. This will ultimately enable mines to unlock value and access deposits in these areas.

The resistance of yielding rockbolts to multiple impact loads was tested by means of a drop hammer. The methodology was based on the ASTM D7401-08 standard as well as the requirements specified for rockbolts by Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB – a Swedish mining company) and the Safety In Mines Research Advisory Committee of South Africa (project number GAP 423). During the tests, the loading force and bolt elongation were measured with a sampling frequency of fs = 19.2 kHz. In order to analyse the phenomena involved, the tests were recorded using two independent high-speed video cameras (600 and 1000 frames per second) and one thermal camera (128 frames per second). The tests demonstrated that all the samples transferred double the gravitational potential energy of Ep = 50.85 kJ from the impact load of mass m = 2825 kg and impact velocity of v = 6.0 m/s without failure. Damage to the bolt-resin contact in the upper anchoring zone of the bolt in the steel tube occurred after subsequent impacts. As a result, the macro-deformed bolt exhibits additional yield, and its operation following the shearing of the resin bond is similar to that of a ‘cone bolt’. Only one test resulted in damage to the threaded bolt rod-nut coupling, during the fourth impact; however, no damage to the bolt-resin contact zone was observed.

The demand for stainless steel is ever-increasing. As an essential element in stainless steel-making process, so is the demand of chromite concentrate. At the same time, the industry proven technologies for beneficiation of chromite are limited. Chromite is only crushed, screened and jigged to produce a concentrate. However, for ultrafine and low-grade material, no satisfactory beneficiation methods for the enrichment of chromite fines exist in industrial operation. This poses a clear challenge for the industry, which Primetals Technologies has addressed with the development of a new beneficiation process. The aim of this process was to enrich low grade chromite tailings to a quality suitable for the smelting process. Required concentrate grades are different over the world, concentrate grades of Cr2O3=40% and lower are found at the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. The target for the present study was a Cr2O3-grade in the area of 49%. Three different chromite tailings with Cr2O3 grades between 16 % and 29 % were part of a study, executed by Primetals Technologies. All three tailing materials were characterised by Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA). Based on the physical, chemical and mineralogical findings, process flowsheets were developed. The process flowsheets included grinding to ensure a full liberation of the chromite. The liberated material was classified at a cut size of 63 μm to a coarse and fine fraction. Gravity separation and flotation processes were tested with the coarse particle fraction. Due to the limitations of gravity separation with fine particles, only the flotation process is suitable and was tested with the fine fraction < 63 μm. A Design of Experiment (DoE) with six factors, each three levels, was conducted to identify optimal parameters for the fine chromite flotation. Two different collectors were tested: a phosphoric acid ester and a fatty acid type collector. In small scale test work a chromite concentration suitable for the smelting process was achieved. On this basis Primetals Technologies will develop a pilot-scale test program to research recirculation effects and upscale potential of the process. The presentation proved to be of great interest to the meeting and lively discussion followed the talk. Mr N. A. Honnet proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Paschalides on behalf of all members of the O.F.S. Branch. CLOSURE The Chairman thanked Mr Paschalides for his talk and all present for their attendance, and as this was the last meeting for 1970 he wished all members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. From 2022 to 2040, the global demand for mineral commodities is projected to increase by fourfold to six-fold, largely due to traditional drivers such as population growth and urbanisation compounded by the adoption of decarbonisation technologies that are more mineral intensive than fossil fuel technologies. To meet this projected demand, companies operating in the minerals industry should accelerate the development of mineral projects. Since most of the companies generally operate in multiple geographical, regulatory or legislative jurisdictions, it is critical that the information on Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves they report on in the public domain should be comparable and consistent across different jurisdictions. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards fosters alignment of national and regional mineral reporting codes through an internationally accepted template that creates common technical understanding of definitions, classification, estimation processes and the Public Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards Template-based codes guide reporting at respective national and regional levels. Since mine planning is critical in the conversion of mineral resources to mineral reserves, a shared technical understanding should aid comparability of mine planning results. However, differences persist in the way mine planning results are reported. Unlike most previous studies, which have primarily focused on comparing mineral reporting codes, this paper updates and extends such comparisons by exploring how similarities or differences in reporting should influence the mine planning process. It also recommends some principle and process changes to assist mine planning professionals to improve consistency and comparability in reporting mine planning results.

Ongoing development work on ultra-fine grinding for various applications at the Group?s concentrators has been conducted by Anglo Platinum over the last few years. Current potential applications for mainstream grinding and concentrate grinding are the subject of a group-wide research and development programme. The first 10 000-litre 2.6 MW IsaMill was jointly developed by Anglo Platinum, Xstrata Technology and Netszch for installation at the Western Limb Tailings Re-treatment project in Rustenburg, South Africa. The unit was commissioned in late 2003/early 2004, and has operated in an intermediate concentrate regrind application successfully since. This paper describes the operational performance to date, as compared with the original duty specifications and objectives. The first mainstream M10 000 IsaMill with a 3 MW drive will be operational in November2006 at the Potgietersrus Platinum (PPL) ?Platreef? Sandsloot Concentrator in South Africa?s Limpopo Province. Bateman Engineering managed the establishment of a second diamond treatment plant at the Letseng Mine in the Mokhotlong District of northern Lesotho, about 100 km from the town of Buthe Buthe. Letseng Diamonds Proprietary Limited, is owned 70 % by Gem Diamonds and 30 % by the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The second plant, which commenced construction in late 2006, doubled Letseng Mines&apos; hard rock processing capacity from 2.6 million t/yr to 5.2 million t/yr, making it the worlds&apos; seventh largest diamond mine by throughput. Bateman Engineering provided the engineering design, procurement and construction management of the new plant.

Derelict and ownerless (D&O) mines in South Africa have been an ongoing concern for over a decade. While some progress has been made to rehabilitate D&O asbestos sites, significant work remains, exacerbated by the growth in illegal mining. There are concerns regarding the accuracy and transparency of the D&O database, lack of oversight, and constrained funding, and the government is increasingly looking to the private sector to fund rehabilitation. Given these challenges, a new, sustainable approach to D&O sites in South Africa is needed to bring clarity and transparency to the process, recognise responsibilities and promote partnerships, and explore economic opportunities at D&O sites to reduce the financial liability and respond to the growing demand for critical minerals. This article has three components: i) reviews of international D&O good practices; ii) it analyses South Africa’s current approach and the D&O sites; and iii) proposes a D&O framework that addresses data, risk ratings, responsibilities and rehabilitation, economic opportunities, and stakeholder engagement. The study finds that the majority of the 6,100 so-called abandoned D&O mines are quarries and mine site features, 16% are operational, at least 11% have owners, and only 752 (12%) require rehabilitation. The framework aims to bring clarity and fairness to decision-making and to assign risk and responsibility for rehabilitation and seeks to incorporate economic opportunities to reduce the financial burden of rehabilitation, create jobs for local communities, and respond to the growing demand for critical minerals for the clean energy transition.

"SynopsisThis paper assesses the effectiveness of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH) and its potential to improve mine health and safety in South African mines. Developed by the Chamber of Mines, which represents the majority of the country&apos;s large scale mining employers, MOSH was devised to accelerate progress towards achieving health and safety milestones, which were set by tripartite agreement in 2003. The paper documents and builds on the findings of a study conducted by the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) in 2011 that evaluated MOSH strategy, structures, and process of implementation.The study found that MOSH operated across the mining sector, was directed and dominated by experts and, despite best efforts to include other stakeholders, was led by employers. Statutory worker health and safety representatives and structures were not integrated into the complex change process developed by MOSH. The Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) and organized labour were ambivalent about direct involvement in MOSH and preferred regulatory measures to enforce the participation of mines. MOSH interventions were not targeted at mines with a poor health and safety record, and MOSH lacked a baseline from which to track impacts on sector-wide health and safety performance. The leading practices most widely adopted by mines were designed to improve, rather than fundamentally alter, existing practice. Although the depth of engagement with MOSH among stakeholders and on mine sites varied, mining companies, labour representatives, and the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate (MHSI) saw the programme as significant.IntroductionIn 2011, the Chamber of Mines commissioned the Centre for Sustainability in Mining and Industry (CSMI) to evaluate the progress and effectiveness of the rollout of the Mine Occupational Health and Safety Leading Practice Adoption System (MOSH). CSMI, based in the School of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, is an independent research centre conducting health and safety research relevant to all major stakeholders in the mining sector. The purpose of the evaluation was to identify the factors that enabled or hampered the adoption of new technologies or practices. The timing of the evaluation, two years before the deadline for the 2013 safety and health milestones, allowed time for adjustments to be made. This paper summarizes the results of the evaluation and includes further analysis and discussion of the nature of the programme and the conditions that act to advance it or it hold back."

Coal properties that are associated with wear and damage of grinding equipment during pulverization prior to combustion were investigated. A South African Highveld feed coal and its beneficiated fractions were crushed to <1 >0.25 mm particles for the grindability tests. These particles were milled and screened into <75 μm and >75 μm fractions, which were analysed by different techniques to establish a correlation with the conventional Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI). The <1.5 g.cm-3 float fraction, which contained 93 vol.% (mineral matter free) total -macerals,9% kaolinite, and had the lowest HGI (57) (hardest to grind) was pulverized for 15, 30, 60, and 120 minutes for particle size distribution analysis. This analysis indicated that the content of <75 μm particles increases with increased grinding time. The >1.9 g.cm-3 sink fraction, with the highest HGI (76), 44% kaolinite, and 20 vol.% total macerals, was ground easily to generate the highest proportion of <75 μm particles. Based on higher correlation coefficients (R2 = 0.77–0.91), the ash yield, mineral matter, petrographic composition, and fixed-carbon have significant effects on the HGI. Conversely, the inherent moisture and total sulphur (R2 = 0.48–0.62) have only minor effects on the HGI. Results from this investigation could be implemented in the preparation of a suitable pulverized fuel with little equipment wear, as well as utilizing mineralogical and petrographic compositions. Finally, the effect of microlithotypes and maceral types in South African feed coals on the HGI should be investigated in further pulverization and grindability studies.
