Copper and nickel sulfides occurring in the Duluth Complex of northern Minnesota were examined at the Bureau of Mines, A microscopic study was undertaken to determine the mineralogy and paragenesis of the ore minerals. Eighty-two samples were taken from one deep diamond drill core located near Babbitt, Minn. Modal analyses are presented for the Duluth Complex rocks and for the are minerals in the major mineralized zone. The major sulfide minerals are chalcopyrite, cubanite, pyrrhotite, troilite, and pentlandite. Results of this investigation suggest that the mineralization is related to the structural features of the enclosing rocks: pores, open fractures, and cavities. The pyrrhotite-troilite-pentlandite assemblage is believed to have formed from an immiscible sulfide melt, probably associated with the troctolitic rocks. Most of it settled to the very porous base of the Duluth Complex, and to the other porous zones near xenoliths; small portions were trapped higher in the section. A later introduction of a copper-rich sulfide melt replaced some of the pyrrhotite-troilite and oxides, and filled in the remaining open spaces and fractures in the Duluth Complex and those of the adjacent footwall rock.

[This paper gives the details of tests to determine the design of stoppings capable of withstanding a pressure, applied to either side, of 50 pounds per square inch,6 as required by section 104 (a) of the Operating Regulations to Govern Coal-Mining Methods on Leased Lands on the Public Domain, issued in 1921 and quoted oil page 3. The regulations stipulated that the design for such stoppings must lie approved by the United States Bureau of Standards. The engineers of that organization felt that knowledge of the strength of such structures with respect to the effect of explosion pressure in comparison with static pressure and the strength of the walls which furnish the abutments was insufficient to justify drafting specifications; therefore, tests were needed to give information upon which a rational system of design could be based. A study was then begun; and several series of tests, made by the United States Bureau of Mines and the United States Bureau of Standards in cooperation, grave information upon which are based the detailed specifications offered in a later section. Slabs representing concrete stoppings, with and without reinforcement, were tested at the Bureau of Standards in Washington D. C.; afterwards, full-scale stoppings were tested at the Bureau of Mines Experimental mine near Pittsburgh. It was assumed that in most coal mines the strength of the floor and roof could not be relied on, but dependence must be placed upon the strength of the coal ribs. The tests developed that the maximum strength of an unreinforced concrete stopping was obtained when it acted as a flat arch buttressed against the coil ribs; but its ultimate strength depended upon the resistance to movement offered by the coal strata against which its ends were restrained or buttressed.]

In 1930 the Bureau of Mines published a description3/ f the concentrating process of the Magma Copper Co. as it had been developed to that time and was then employed. The prevent paper revises the description to the end of 1943 and includes a description of the smelting processes. Data from the mild and smelter operations for, 1942 are given in tables 1 to 14, Billing costs are included, but it is not permissible to publish smelter costs.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of the land in south-central Alaska for exploration and mineral development of locatable minerals under State or Federal laws. The land ownership for an area of nearly 72.5 million acres in south-central Alaska was divided into 3 availability categories and 15 subcategories. In July 1985, 31.0 million acres of the study area were available for mineral exploration and development, 6.2 million acres were available with restrictions, and 35.3 million acres were unavailable. About 23.6 million acres in the study area are underlain by mineral terranes. About 9.9 million of the 23.6 million acres are available for mineral entry, 2.4 million acres are available with restrictions, and 11.3 million acres are unavailable. While much of the land currently classified as unavailable will be reclassified once it is conveyed to the State or to Native corporations, about 22% of the unavailable lands underlain by mineral terranes are now Federal parks, preserves, wildlife refuges, wild and scenic rivers, and military lands, all of which are considered permanently unavailable for mineral exploration and development.

DOMESTIC OUTPUT of white arsenic, As2O3, was derived entirely as a byproduct of smelting arsenic-containing copper ores by The Anaconda Company at Anaconda, Mont., and American Smelting and Refining Company at Tacoma, Wash. Arsenic metal was not produced. Consumption, and Uses.-Most of the white arsenic produced in 1964 was consumed in manufacturing lead and calcium arsenate insecticides. In the 12 year period since 1951 the production of lead arsenate insecticide has varied between 7,800 tons and 4,900 tons, indicating that lead arsenate has maintained its position in competition with organic insecticides.

The presence in the Cripple Creek district, Colo., of irrespirable gas or gases, generally known to consist mainly of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, has been recognized by members of the mining industry in that region almost since underground mining was begun there; the occurrence, origin, and possible control of these gases have been discussed in several articles cited at various places in this report. Similar gases have also been studied in other metal-mining districts, as later discussed. In March, 1925, there were two fatalities from rock-strata gases in the shaft of the Index mine, near Cripple Creek. Two men repairing the bell or signal line preparatory to reopening the shaft were lowered into irrespirable gases and died. Their bodies were recovered by rescue crews from the United States Bureau of Mines and .the Portland mine, Victor, Colo. These crews found it necessary to use oxygen breathing apparatus. In October of the same year a miner was trapped on the 6 level of the Midget mine by an influx of gases that filled the shaft to a point above that where he was working. Oxygen breathing apparatus was again used by Bureau of Mines employees, who were in the vicinity, and the man was brought out in time to save his life. These two fatalities and one near fatality seemed to show that additional investigation of the gases and methods of control might be warranted. Accordingly, field and laboratory studies were begun by the authors of this report after a visit to the district by M. van Siclen, then engineer in charge, mining research division, Bureau of Mines, and after conferences with the Mine Owners' Association of Cripple Creek and with J. T. Joyce, metal-mine commissioner of the State of Colorado. The mine operators of the Cripple Creek district and the State mine commissioner's office gave whole-hearted cooperation in this work.

In the experimental concentration of Vermont talc-magnesite ores, talc concentrates and tailings rich in magnesite were obtained. On account of the possible market value of the magnesite, the tailings are given consideration' in this report along with the talc. After some comments about the talc industry, the magnesite that accrued as tailings will be considered. Then the flotation results will follow.

The literature dealing with the electrical conductivity of solid dielectrics, including all its aspects and its relationships to other physical properties of these materials, is extensive and scattered in many books, phamphlets, and periodicals. It is believed that most of the important contributions to this field up to October 1943 have been listed and abstracted in this circular. Also included are some general references on static electricity. Methods of removing static charges are described; methods of and conditions for measurements of resistivity are discussed; equations for the calculation of resistivity are given; and methods of resistance measurements in Situ are reviewed. Data on the variations of resistivity with changing conditions as well as explanations for them have been collected, and three tables showing the resistivity of various dielectrics at different humidities are included. The appendix contains a short development of the mathematical formulation of the charging and discharging currents due to interfacial polarisation. INTRODUCTION Methods for Removing Static Electricity Of the various means employed for preventing or removing accumulations of static electricity in industrial processes, grounding is the most common and most generally effective. It is a precaution readily applied to stationary machines anti may often be utilized to good advantage to rid persons and portable equipment of an acquired charge. There are many situations, however, in which direct low-resistance grounding cannot be used, either because the charged bodies are insulators or are inaccessible, or because contact to a ground lead might give rise to a hazardous spark. If the charged body is a conductor, contact made to a neighboring conductor, even though the latter be insulated from ground and of relatively small capacitance, may also result in the occurrence of an incendive spark. In such instances, static electricity can sometimes be removed most satisfactorily by means of strong atmospheric ionization produced by radioactive material, X-rays, ultraviolet light, or A. A number of highly instrumented free fall tests were performed on an arrestment system for a man cage in a vertical shaft. Tests were conducted in the U.S. Bureau of Mines free fall test tower at the Colorado School of Mines. A single tooth safety dog was used to stop on 4x6-in. Keruing (Phillipine mahogany) wet and dry wood guides. The safety dog had a penetration depth of 1 in., an adjustable width from 1-1/2 to 2-1/4 in., and a tooth angle of 80 deg. Twenty-seven free fall tests were performed covering a range in weights from 3-1/2 to 10-1/2 tons, hoisting velocities from 850 to 1350 feet per minute. Average g loads were measured from a low of 0.6 to a high of 3.4. The electronic instrumentation included piezoelectric and seismic mass accelerometers, strain gages on structural and mechanical elements, load cells in the guides, and distance measuring. Computer analysis was used to correlate with experimental measurements used to calculate stress. A statistical analysis gave no indication that the velocity or area affected the wood crushing stress. The instrumentation revealed a chatter occurring during the stop as shown by the accelerometers, strain gages, and load cells. Additional work is required to analyze this newly discovered phenomenon. The chatter imposes loads much higher than the average g load.

This paper is one of a series describing the mineral resources of the Nation, including location, history, production, ownership, geologic setting, and mining methods for most of the known manganese deposits in New Mexico, With few exceptions these descriptions are the result of field examinations by the writer. Of 32 counties, the 12 which occupy the western half of the State contain all the known manganese deposits, These counties are Catron, Dona Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Santa Fe, Sierra, Socorro, San Juan, and Taos. Every shift provides different conditions and challenges. Coping with stress is an important tool to maintain your physical and mental health. Now, back to mom. Studies on stress tell us that shifting your focus away from what is causing your stress increases your ability to cope. Counting to 10 is one method. Science proves mom right. The stress response We are born with the stress response, which is a survival instinct, sometimes called the "fight or flight" response. When approached by a tiger in the jungle, our ancestors would perceive danger and prepare to fight or run. The body prepares for the fight or flight response in a number of ways. The bloodstream brings extra glucose and oxygen (fuel) to the heart, the sense of pain is dulled, and memory and thinking improve. The pupils dilate for better vision and the lungs take in more oxygen, while heart rate and blood pressure increase. Body hairs become erect, as puffed-out hair makes an animal look bigger and more dangerous. Once the perceived danger is gone - we have run fast enough to get away from the tiger or won the fight - the body returns to normal functions. Unfortunately, civilization gives us too many opportunities to experience this response. If activated too often, it can create wear and tear on the body, which may lead to injury and illness. Chronic and traumatic stress There are two key types of stress: chronic stress and traumatic stress. Both types can cause both physical and psychological symptoms. Chronic stress builds up from the day-to-day hassles. Traumatic stress results from a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a mine disaster, or the sudden death of a loved one. Chronic stress is associated with an increased risk of a number of health problems including heart disease, depression, back pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Traumatic stress may lead to post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Miners may experience both chronic and traumatic stress in their work.

Although the pathophysiology of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) is still under discussion, evidence has been accumulated to understand the underlying mechanism. VWF is pathophysiologically characterized by an enhanced vasospastic response to cold, which can result from an imbalance between vasoconstriction and vasodilation in the digital arteries in response to cold (i.e., vasoconstriction-dominant). The imbalance is supposed to be due to faults in vascular vessels and sympathetically mediated vascular tone. Enhanced vasospastic response to cold Narrowing of arterial lumen with medial smooth muscle hypertrophy. Possible functional factors for enhanced vasoconstriction • Increased sympathetic nervous activity to cold (e.g., norepinephrine) • Increased release of endothelin-1 (ET-1; an endothelial-dependent vasoconstrictor) from the endothelium • Increased reactivity of alpha2-adrenoreceptors to cold Possible functional factors for decreased vasodilation • Decreased release of nitric oxide (NO; an endothelial-dependent vasodilator) from the endothelium • Decreased release of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP; a vasodilatory neuropeptide) from sensory afferents The question is how their interrelations or imbalances among them are Vibration and arterial damage The next question is, how does hand-arm vibration exposure induce such pathophysiological changes in VWF patients? Recent morphological evidence from animal experiments shows that vibration acceleration stress (including shear stress) and smooth muscle contraction contribute to arterial damage of smooth muscle and endothelial cells. The vibration-induced arterial damage is frequency-amplitude-dependent.

This report describes in detail three waterflooding projects and a pres-sure-maintenance project in Butler and Cowley Counties, Kans., that will be visited on the 1963 annual spring tour of the Kansas-Oklahoma Waterflood Association. Among the unique features of the projects are the flooding of five oil-producing horizons separately with injection water furnished by two water treating plants. Discussion of the individual projects includes information on their early history, the source and treatment of the injection fluids, oil production decline curves, and the results of water injection on oil production.

This report describes the development, design, fabrication and testing of a port-able, battery-operated, light scattering monitor (henceforth to be designated as ILSDM) for the rapid measurement of the concentration of respirable dust in mining environments. This instrument incorporates state-of-the-art design characteristics and makes use of advanced solid-state components both for light emission as well as for its detection. The use of a pulsed light source combined with synchronous signal detection minimizes drift problems and optimizes the sensitivity of the measurement. Simplicity of operation, reliability and ruggedness, light weight as well as improved performance were salient objectives of this instrument development program. Continuous clean-air flow screening of all critical optical surfaces, and optimized optical detection and electronic signal processing design resulted in about a hundred-fold decrease of noise and drift with respect to precursor instruments. Equivalent mass concentration measurements 88 low as 10 micrograms per cubic meter can be routinely performed with time constants of about 2 second.

The Bureau of Mines motor gasoline surveys have been conducted in January and July, during 1920 and 1921. The Bureau has obtained and analyzed samples of gasoline representative of that marketed in the larger cities. These surveys have indicated that the gasoline on the market during the winter months is more volatile than that sold during the summer months. Naturally, the motorist desires a more volatile gasoline in the cold winter months, as it affords greater ease in starting. The fourth semi-annual motor gasoline survey, conducted during the month of July, shows an interesting relation between the market price and the quality of motor gasoline. This is particularly evident if figures obtained today are compared with those of a year ago. At the time the Bureau of Mines conducted its summer survey of motor gasoline last year, the average tank wagon price of gasoline was 28.2 cents per gallon. This year it was 21.2 cents, a drop of practically 25%.

[Certain chapters of the tentative document entitled, "Test Requirements for instruments & Apparatus to be Considered for MESA Intrinsically Safe Certification" are evaluated and supporting data are presented on certain key issues with the purpose of helping the regulatory agency in improving the above document. The subjects discussed in detail are: hot wire ignition with W and BeCu wires; the most sensitive methane-air :and propane air ratio; the ignition limits for inductive-resistive circuits in 8.3°; methane-air mixtures in the 24-OV, 100 mH-2 [ ]H range, the resistive ignition limit as a special case when L ? 0; the capacitive-resistive ignition limit representing a four ,dimensional problem is analyzed and discussed in general and the variation of the ignition limit using Vo and/or r2 as a parameter are determined experimentally. The ignition limit is also determined for the [r1 ,~ r2] = 0 case ("capacitor alone") and for the most dangerous capacitive resistive circuit combination. The ignition limits are below the limits proposed in the document. A survey of the different factors influencing the ignition is made as to their suitability to provide a constant safety factor. It is shown that a constant safety factor cannot be achieved. The best method for applying a safety factor appears to be the increase of initial pressure or use of other gas mixture. The revision of the safety factor concept and ignition limit curves is recommended.]

The performance characteristics of five hydrocyclone coal washers were evaluated to determine the sharpness and efficiency of separation that might be anticipated in commercial operation. The hydrocyclone overflows contained generally good clean coal products that would require little re-treating to remove misplaced high-gravity material. The underflows, however, contained from 63.6 to 36.7 percent of misplaced low-gravity material, which would require secondary cleaning to provide acceptable clean coal yields.

Roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines continue to experience overexposure to respirable dust. One potential source of dust in roof bolting operations is the exhaust from the roof bolter dust collection system. A wet exhaust conditioner (?water box?) has been developed to reduce dust emissions from the exhaust of the vacuum dust collection system on roof bolting machines. The exhaust conditioner consists of a muffler chamber and a water chamber with four internal partitions to direct airflow over the surface of the water. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a series of laboratory tests to assess the respirable dust capture ability of this device as compared to the standard exhaust muffler. To determine the dust collection efficiency, both devices were placed in the exhaust stream of a simulated roof bolter dust collection system. Gravimetric samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the exhaust conditioner and muffler to evaluate the ability to capture both respirable coal and limestone dust. Researchers observed a 41 percent reduction in dust concentrations for the water exhaust conditioner in the laboratory configuration. Significant levels of dust deposition in the sampling chambers may have contributed to this effective capture rate.
