The design, development, and testing of hydraulic props to provide a lightweight, high strength, recoverable unit is described. Modifications in design incorporating threaded components resulted in the development of a lightweight hydraulic prop fabricated from aluminum alloy tubing. This new design facilitates interchange and replacement of component parts, and the physical properties of the material are not changed as they are when welding is required. The new prop is 65,000 pounds and has a maximum load capacity of a lower weight-to-load capacity ratio than the hydraulic props now available.

FEDERAL Bureau of Mines. - The Bureau of Mines does not make assays or analyses for individuals or firms unless the samples are part of the ore-testing and ore-dressing investigations of the Metallurgical Division on representative ores from mining districts and of possible benefit to the entire mineral industry through published reports. All significant results obtained in this way are made public. Any mineral sample sent to this Bureau for simple identification will be examined.

In general, mining is carried on underground, that is, in confined places where it is difficult to obtain adequate lighting and frequently in rock strata requiring much care to prevent caving. Moreover, explosives must be used in mining with the numerous hazards associated with them, and some mines give off explosive or irrespirable gases; also, ma- chinery must be used, usually under conditions much more hazardous than on the surface. These and many other considerations cause mining to be probably the most hazardous occupation in which large numbers of our fellow countrymen are employed. Prevention of accidents in the mining industry is far more complicated than in surface industrial work, even of the more hazardous types, because the different elements that enter into possible accident occurrence are ascertained more readily above ground and suitable action can be taken against them; moreover, errors in connection with prevention of accidents in surface industrial work usually affect only one or, possibly, a few persons, while in zines one human error may readily cause an explosion or other untoward occurrence resulting in the death of scores or even hundreds of persons. This difficulty in the prevention of accidents in and around mines is well-known, and most countries and States have regulations to guard the safety and, to a much smaller extent, the health of workers in mining and allied industries. In general, the State laws and regu- lations regarding the welfare of mine workers are merely a skeletonized outline of some more or less fundamental minimum requirements and are far too general to do much more than suggest some procedure which may or may not be safe or healthful. Most of them are grotesquely out-of-date as applied to present-day conditions, and none of them is adequate to protect life, limb, health, or property. Unquestionably, there is great need for a closer correlation of the laws and regulations of the various States with regard to safety in the mining and allied industries, and while mining conditions vary far too much for a standardized mine safety law applicable to all of the States, on the other hand there are numerous standard and fairly fundamental safety pro- visions which apply to all mines and which should be embodied in the mining codes of all States. Undoubtedly, these standardized safety requirements would be opposed by a consider- able part of the industry, but the ultimate effect would be beneficial to the owners, work- ers, and the general public. For many years progressive mining companies in the United States have not been satisfied to operate only within the meager safety requirements of the State laws or regulations and have adopted additional and far more effective safety procedure of their own, although com- plying also with the State laws and regulations. As a result of this forward-locking policy, zany of these companies have made astonishing progress in the reduction of accidents.

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. The Bureau of Mines is currently developing methods for reclaiming the metal and mineral values contained in unburned urban refuse. One important phase of this research deals with recovering Mastic from shredded refuse using in electrodynamic separation process. The results of this study have indicated that mixed plastic concentrates analyzing 99.4 percent plastic can be consistently recovered from the light material fraction of shredded refuse, leaving a mixed paper traction analyzing 99.9 percent paper. Recovery of the plastic exceeds 99 percent.

8. Refuge Chambers 8.1 Refuge Chambers - Technical Discussion 8.1.1 Introduction As a part of the overall escape system, refuge chambers can provide a last resort when existing escapeways are blocked. These chambers are intended to provide both protection from toxic gases and a life supporting environment for a period of time before external rescue or further escape efforts can be carried out Escapeways may be blocked physically (due to cave-ins, etc), by fire, or by the presence of a toxic or oxygen deficient atmosphere. In the first two cases, the trapped miners would most likely await external rescue efforts, and hence the design of the chamber will have to consider the time durations that such efforts may take, It is also possible, in the second case, for fire fighting and fire protective equipment to be stored in the chamber so that miners may attempt their own escape. In the third case, it should be recognized that a compact, beltmounted 1-hour self-contained breathing apparatus has been developed(9), and that other, less compact equipment is available for up to 4 hours of self-contained breathing supply. If such equipment were stored in the chambers, then miners could escape by travelling from chamber to chamber, taking temporary refuge in each before proceeding to the next. 8.1.2 Background The concept of "barricading" has long been recommended for those emergencies where miners are trapped inby a fire. Barricading, which is the construction of a makeshift shelter in a crosscut or deadend, protects the entrapped miners from toxic gases and enables them to conserve a supply of air. In this manner, they can survive two or three days--hopefully enough time for them to be reached by rescue teams. In the past, many lives have been saved with this technique.

This chapter includes tables for 1982 that were not available in time for publication of the 1982 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include corresponding tables for 1983. The value of raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1988 was estimated at $21.1 billion, an increase of $1.5 billion over the value for 1982. This is a reversal of last year's downturn in value from that of 1981, which was the only decrease noted since 1971; hence, an overall trend of increasing values has been maintained for 12 years, except for 1982. Although the reversal is a basis for cautious economic optimism, it is tempered by continued problems in the domestic mining industry: inadequate funds for capital investment and competition with other countries that have lower production costs. Output of metal commodities in 1983 increased for 8 out of 21 metals, and metal values, in general, increased for 9 of the metals. Output of nonmetal commodities was mixed, with 24 nonmetals showing increases, 20 showing decreases, and 2 unchanged. Nonmetal values were also mixed in 1982: 25 showed increases, 20 declined, and 1 was unchanged. Improvements in the international metals market have not been forthcoming because of the continued depressed prices for major metals. Governments in foreign producing countries have been concerned with maintaining employment and continuing foreign exchange flows through mineral exports. Consequently, the excess of supply in the face of shrinking demand brought downward pressure on metal prices in general, except for the precious metals. On the domestic front, this situation means U.S. mining companies must become even more cost efficient. The major trend in the mining industry in 1983 was to cut costs further, reduce or stabilize total production, reduce outlays for major capital equipment, modify existing systems and equipment, and streamline operations. Most of the accomplishments reported herein reflect this trend.

"The evolution during oxidation of the internal structure of soot and carbon black particles was studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and an image analysis system. Increasing ordering to the carbon structure with increasing oxidation is observed. Measures of the increased order are increases in the fractional coverage of a cross section of the particles with a layered structure, a decrease in the mean interlayer spacing, and a decrease in the spread of the interlayer spacing. The changing structure of the carbon black impacts its properties, such as the rate of oxidation.There is considerable interest in the study of the structural changes of carbonaceous materials as a function of oxidation. Davis et al.1 measured the variation of carbon dioxide surface area of various coals as a function of residence time in a flow reactor. HRTEM measurements revealed that crystallite dimensions and interlayer spacings are altered by combustion. Ishiguro et al.2 showed that oxidation alters the structure of diesel soot. The aim of our current research is to develop a better understanding of the microstructural reordering of carbon blacks with implications to their properties. The carbon blacks used in this research have already been studied and their reactivities as a function of oxidation measured.3The methodology used in this work has already been described in detail elsewhere.4 This paper presents an application to quantify the structural changes of carbon black particles as a function of oxidation and graphitization. The technique used is based on the use of HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and computational image analysis.It is well-known that carbonaceous materials like graphite, soots, coals, chars, etc., possess characteristic structural appearances which can vary from mostly random or amorphous to a perfectly ordered graphitic crystalline structure. The carbon structure has been variously described as turbostratic5 or as crumpled sheets6 to indicate that parallel layering, reminiscent of graphite, is observed over dimensions of nanometers but that these planes or crystallites show disorder over larger scales. The degree of order of such structures is strongly dependent on the thermal treatment of the material as well as the composition of the source of the carbonaceous material. The value of electron micros¬copy in studying the morphology of such materials has been well established,2,7,8 although only a few attempts toward quantification have been made.The sample observed was carbon black CB330 from De¬gussa. One set of carbon black samples were oxidized in a thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA) in air at 575 0C, so that the conversion varied from 0 to 96%. Another set of carbon black samples were graphitized (Graphpac-GB by ALLTECH) and then oxidized in the TGA at 680 °C until 92% burnout was reached. The latter samples are called GB 0% and GB 92%, respectively.For the HRTEM observation a small portion of each sample was ultrasonically dispersed in ethanol. The suspension was deposited dropwise on a copper TEM grid coated with a lacey carbon film. The examination of the samples was carried out on areas that extend over the holes in the supporting film in order to avoid interference from the amorphous carbon background film An oriented gold crystal was used as a calibration standard and subjected to the same techniques as the carbon black samples."

Reduce the costs associated with conventional treatment of acid mine water. Approach Conventional treatment of acid mine drainage consists of plants requiring large mixing and aeration tanks, mechanical aerators and large, shallow settling ponds. Such plants are usually very costly to construct, maintain and operate. The Bureau of Mines has developed a simple, low-maintenance, highly efficient system to treat acid mine drainage which mixes, aerates, and neutralizes mine water Simultaneously in the existing discharge pipeline by using the pressure generated by the deep mine discharge pumps. The mixing and aeration action of the in-line system significantly increases oxidation rates of ferrous iron. Iron and manganese are removed, even at near neutral pH levels, due to the high efficiency of this system. How It Works The In-line Aeration and Treatment System (ILS) consists of two commercially available components, a jet pump (ejector) and a static mixer. The jet pump is simply a nozzle that converts water, already under pressure, into a high-velocity stream that entrains air by Venturi action. If neutralization is required, sodium hydroxide or lime is added along with the air at the Venturi opening. The aerated and neutralized water then enters the static mixer, which is a length of internally spiralled pipe that mixes air and water together. The two components, which are both about 8 feet in length, replace the last section of discharge pipe at a point before the mine water is emptied into a pond. Along with the settling pond, these components treat the water so that it meets discharge criteria. The system has been used at surface drainage treatment facilities as well, but in such use a pump is required to provide the necessary pressure drop across the Venturi opening.

Table 28 and figure 10 show the number of fires and fire injuries for coal preparation plants by state during 1990-1999. Table 28 also shows the risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by state. For coal preparation plants, 91 fires occurred in 1 1 states during 1990- 1999. Twenty-three of those fires caused 25 injuries (the yearly average was 9.1 fires and 2.5 injuries). Ten fires and eight injuries involved contractors. The Ewhr value was 24 1 x 10' hr (Irr = 0.02 l), and the LWD value was 198. Pennsylvania had the most fires (24 fires and 4 injuries), whereas West Virginia (22 fires and 7 injuries) and Kentucky (22 fires and 7 injuries) had the most fire injuries. Among these states, Kentucky had the highest injury risk rate value (Irr = 0.025). Table 29, partly illustrated in figure 11, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires decreased during most of the periods (an increase is seen only during the last period). The number of fire injuries show a decrease followed by an increase during the periods, accompanied by a decline in employees' working hours throughout the periods. The Irr values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values (see table 29 and figure 11). Tables 30-35 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 12 shows the major variables during 1990-1999. Table 36 shows the fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

Explicit expressions are presented for the input admittance and effective height of several buried metal antennas, namely: (i) prolate spheroidal; (ii) spherical; (iii) oblate spheroidal; (iv) parallel plate; (v) parallel plate with protruding dielectric in the same plane of the plates; (vi) parallel plate with protruding dielectric in a plane normal to that of the plates (H-shaped antenna). Explicit expressions are presented for the input admittance and effective height of several buried metal antennas, namely: (i) prolate spheroidal; (ii) spherical; (iii) oblate spheroidal; (iv) parallel plate; (v) parallel plate with protruding dielectric in the same plane of the plates; (vi) parallel plate with protruding dielectric in a plane normal to that of the plates (H-shaped antenna). It is concluded that in all practical situations of "small" antennas approximation 1 is almost always appropriate. Computations were carried out for bare antennas, the extension to insulated ones being, however, straightforward. Although a rigorous theory of the antenna performance in a realistic semi-infinite conductive medium has not been developed, the results quoted should also be applicable when antennas are a few skin depths below the earth's surface. In particular, for the evaluation of radio-links under up-over -and-down operating conditions, the antennas can be replaced by dipoles of length equal to the effective height. Since the antenna's parameters are given in analytical form, it is also possible, by using Laplace transform techniques, to compute the transient response of the antenna. The transient is described by pole (short-time behavior) and branch-cut contributions (large time behavior). For these last terms, an asymptotic evaluation is possible, so obtaining closed form expressions for the response at large observation times, which is closely related to the dispersion characteristic of the environment.

The Secretary of the Interior acting through the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey is authorized by the Strategic Materials (Public No. 117 - 76th Cong., Chapter 190 1st Sess.) to make investigation concerning essential minerals of which the quantities or grades obtainable from known domestic sources are inadequate. The Bureau of Mines, in carrying out its part of this program, may investigate deposits of such minerals in whatever manner may be necessary, in order to determine (1) the extent and quality of the are, (2) the most suitable method of mining and beneficiating it, and (3) the cost at which it may be produced. The essential objective in doing these things is to determine where and how supplies of minerals and metals of which domestic production is usually inadequate might be obtained in a national emergency, even though at higher cost than usual.

Under the present emergency every consumer should store as much coal as he can. Although there is no shortage of coal, there is likely to be a shortage of labor to mine excessive quantities in the fall, and railroads cannot be expected to deliver coal promptly on account of the need for transporting war materials. Some miners must join the armed forces, and those who are left may be unable to mine coal as rapidly as you will need it when winter comes. When the first cold days arrive, there may be a shortage of trucks to deliver coal. Deliveries may be planned in advance, and your turn might not come until it is too late.

A system for measuring amplitude probability distributions (APD’s) of electromagnetic noise in coal mines is described and typical APD’s from an underground coal mine are presented. The APD is a basic statistic required for the design and analysis of communication systems, especially those intended for use in noisy environments, and where neither overdesign nor underdesign is acceptable. The rms and average field strengths are obtained by integration of the APD, and examples are shown at several frequencies. All field strength levels are given in absolute units. Selected frequencies cover the range from 10 kHz to 32 MHz.

Illinois has the largest reported bituminous coal resources of any state and is one of largest coal-producing states in the nation. Coal-bearing rocks underlie about 65 percent of Illinois, including all or part of 86 of its 102 counties. An estimated 18 1 billion tons of coal resources are still in the ground. Using present mining methods, more than 30 billion tons of coal are classified as recoverable. This represents almost one-eighth of the total recoverable reserves of all types of coal in the United States. The state's surface mining regulatory program was conditionally approved June 1,1982. It received full approval October 25,1988. The Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved June 1, 1982, and the AML emergency authority June 11, 1984.

"Introduction.The Bureau of Mines has taken up the problem of determining a method or methods whereby underground compensation insurance rates for metal-mining companies can be equalized in proportion to the underground hazards involved. This study has been started by the writer with the assistance of Mr. I. M. Wolfin* as consultant.The present paper briefly reviews the origin of accident compensation, gives a digest of State compensation laws, and describes types of insurance carriers. This will be followed by study of the basis of premium rate, risk differentials, and cost of compensation insurance to mine operators. These data will be supplemented by an analysis of the accident hazards in different mining methods and practices, and the severity and frequency of accidents classified by time lost and period of exposure to hazard, for different States, mining methods, occupations and nationalities. Attention will be given to standardized preventives for underground accidents in metal mines, and, finally, the classification of underground metal-mining hazard for workmen's compensation insurance premium rating."

Unusual circumstances may require that a longwall retreat into or through a previously driven room. The operation can be completed successfully, but there have been a number of spectacular failures. To help determine what factors contribute to such failures, a comprehensive international database of 131 case histories has been compiled. The cases include six failures where major rock falls occurred in front of the shields, and seven even more serious failures involving major overburden weighting. The case studies suggest two types of room failure mechanism. The first is a roof fall type failure caused by loading of the immediate roof at the face as the fender or remnant longwall panel narrows. The second is an overburden weighting type failure caused by the inability of the roof to bridge the recovery room and face area, and affecting rockwell above the immediate roof. The data indicate that the roof fall type of failure is less likely when intensive roof reinforcement (bolts, cables and trusses) is employed together with higher-capacity shields. The overburden weighting failures, in contrast, occurred when the roof was weak and little standing support was used. Weighting failures were not greatly affected by the density of roof reinforcement. In one of the overburden weighting cases, in a Pittsburgh coal bed mine, stress cell, convergence, bolt load and extensometer data have been used to analyze the failure in detail. From the most remote periods of civilization stone has been used to perpetuate the memory of individuals or to immortalize their noble achievements. Ancient memorials ranged from simple piles of stone (cairns), or single markers, to great obelisks and pyramids or magnificent mausoleums. The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, built of white marble by Shah Jehan in memory of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and costly memorials ever built. It was erected between 1632 and 1650 at an estimated cost of $50,000,000 or more and is today an object of unusual interest for travelers. Other magnificent memorials both ancient and modern are to be found in many lands. No sharp line can be drawn between buildings and monuments, because the larger types of memorials such as the Bok Singing Tower, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, and mausoleums of various types have features in common with buildings. However, great care must be exercised in selecting a site for a quarry that will produce acceptable monumental stone because appearance as well as quality is of prime importance. The deposit must be of uniform texture and attractive color and must be notably free of knots, hairlines, impurities, incipient seams, or other defects. Many memorials are of polished stone, and spots or streaks that might be virtually Invisible on a natural rock face will appear distinctly on a polished surface. Hence, stone to be polished must be selected with unusual care. However, less flawless stone may be used for hammered surfaces.
