"Purpose and Origin of Investigation.For many investigations of mineral products such as metallic and ceramic materials, especially refractories, a knowledge of thermal conductivity and specific heat at high temperature is required. Such data have been needed by the Bureau of Mines for checking heat balances in kilns, and computing heat loss through furnace walls.Design of apparatus for thermal conductivity tests was undertaken by the Bureau early in 1922, an industry at that time indicated that no equipment intended for extreme high-temperature observations was elsewhere available or likely to be in the immediate future.The Bureau's investigation was begun by C. R. Greenslade, assisted by F. A. Hartgen, and temporarily discontinued owing to their resignations in the summer of 1922. The work was later turned over to the writers of this report, and has been carried forward at intervals, along with other problems."

Float-and-sink tests indicate what results are obtainable by gravity separation and rare therefore an invaluable adjunct to most coal-cleaning processes. However, it is difficult to make a direct interpretation of float-and-sink data on coal, and several systems for interpreting them have been proposed. Of these, that developed and used extensively by Bird3/, Yancey4/, and Gandrud5/ is considered by the author to be the most satisfactory. It makes use of four interrelated curves (hereafter referred to as be "washability curves"). "During the mining process, the insitu material is broken into different size ranges, from very, large pieces to very fine particles. Some of the fine particles become airborne. In underground coal mining, airborne respirable. dust is associated with health and safety of the miners: The amount and size distributions of airborne dust are important parameters to effective dust control measures. The design of underground mine experiments, including sampling procedures and sample analyses methods to determine these parameters are presented in this paper.. A total of fifteen continuous miner cuts were sampled. The amount of dust generated during the cutting process and the relationship between total and respirable airborne dust concentrations and amounts are examined.The amount of respirable dust airborne is on the average only. 0.016% of the respirable dust generated. On the average, 61% of the total .airborne dust measured is in the respirable size range. The amount of respirable airborne' is on the average 36% of the respirable size fraction in the total airborne dust. For equal proportion of rock and coal material cut, rock contributes about twice as much fines (<0.22 mm) as coal. Additional fundamental research is necessary to further the understanding of 'the airborne propensity of respirable dusts in mine atmospheres.INTRODUCTIONMining is a sequential process of breaking, gathering, loading, and transporting the in-situ .materials.' In underground coal mines, duet in both the non-respirable and respirable size ranges is generated and entrained in every phase of the process. Even though large amounts of dust particles' adhere to run-of-mine coals, part of the dust generated becomes airborne (Cheng and Zukovich, 1973). Studies have shown that bit type affects the amount of dust generated'(Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Kurth et al., 1975; Roepke et al., 1976; Stecklein et al., 1982; and Khair and 'Reddy, 1986). Deep cutting can reduce airborne dust generation (Black and Schmidt, 1977 arid, Black et 1978). Mechanical properties of. coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Laboratory studies have shown that Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) of the coal has a relationship with the amount of respirable. dust generated (Beafi and Ramani, 1979; Moore and Bise, 1984; and Moore, 1986). However, these relationships have not yet been validated with' data from the mines. The amount of dust airborne depends on a number of factors. Suppression of the airborne propensity of dust by water sprays is'widely practiced and is very effective. Water flow rate; pressure and configuration of water sprays have been identified as major factors affecting dust capture by sprays (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Courtney et al., 1978; and Kissell et al., 1979). Ventilation is a very important means of controlling the dust level at the coal face (Jayaraman, 1977). According to a National Academy of Sciences study (1980), the mechanism of dust generation and the process by which the generated dust becomes airborne are complex and not yet completely understood coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Laboratory studies have shown that Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) of the coal has a relationship with the amount of respirable dust generated (Beafi and Ramani, 1979; Moore and Bise, 1984; and Moore, 1986). In this paper, single-component gas sorption and transient diffusion processes are described within coal matrix exhibiting bimodal pore structure. The coal matrix is treated as a poroelastic medium manifesting swelling and shrinkage effects due to the sorption of gas under effective overburden stress. Gas transport is considered Fickian with molecular (bulk) and surface diffusion processes simultaneously taking place in the macro-and micropores of coal, respectively. The numerical formulation is intended to be explicit in nature to investigate the influences of sorption phenomena on the macropore volumes and on the overall gas transport for the cases of gas uptake by and release from coal. Results of the study show the presence of hysteresis during a sorption?desorption cycle of the gas. It is also found that the overall gas transport takes place at a rate significantly less than that in the macropores only. Thus the existence of a retardation effect in the overall gas transport is concluded. This retardation effect is primarily due to the micropore resistances, in particular gas adsorption, and is independent of the changes in the macropore volumes. It is shown that macroporosity of the coal matrix may change during gas transport due to combined effects of pressure and sorption-induced swelling or shrinkage of the coal. It is estimated that the macroporosity variation is non-uniform in space and time, as it is expected in reality, and typically taking values less than ±10 percent of the initial porosity.

"Studies of the flow fields and particle impaction characteristics are more complicated in multi-nozzle impactors than in single-nozzle impactors, since the jets of air must penetrate cross-flowing air to impinge on the impaction plate. Results of heat and mass transfer analysis are employed to describe the cross-flow pattern in multi-nozzle impactors. A cross-flow parameter has been derived to predict the deflection of the air jet by the cross-flow. This parameter is expressed as a function of the geometric parameters for the multi-nozzle impactor. DnN 4D,, where N is the number of nozzles, Dn the nozzle diameter and D, the nozzle cluster diameter. Empirical particle collection data show that multi-nozzle impactors operate satisfactorily, if the cross-flow parameter is less than a critical value of 1.2. Impactors operating with a cross-flow parameter larger than this critical value are shown to possess poor particle collection characteristics.Inertial impactors of many designs have been used for sampling aerosol particles. Impactors can be single stage, consisting of a nozzle and an impaction plate, or a cascade impactor with several stages in series. The simplest design for a stage is a single nozzle with a flat impaction plate. However, many designs use stages with multiple nozzles of identical size, which allows for compact impactors to be designed at rather substantial flow rates and moderate pressure drops.Nearly all of the theoretical work, and much of the experimental work, has been performed on single-nozzle impactors. The results of single-nozzle impactor analysis are often applied to multiple-nozzle impactors, which are assumed to be a group of individual nozzles, each operating as though they were single nozzles. However, an important fact is often ignored: the interaction of flow from adjacent nozzles can change not only the fluid mechanics in the impaction region, but also the locations of the jet stagnation points, and the impaction characteristics of each nozzle.The effect of multiple nozzles on the particle collection characteristics of impactors has been studied by a few investigators. May (1964), Fletch et al. (1967), Friedrichs (1968), and Vaughan (1986) reported that the quantity of particles in deposits of nozzles in the first two stages of the Andersen multi-nozzle cascade impactor were not equal. The inner deposits appeared to contain fewer particles than the outer ones. However, Vaughan (1986) in addition showed that many of the deposits in the outer three rows were missing on the first stage, even though the outer deposits that were present were larger than the inner deposits.May (1964) conducted experiments and explained the phenomenon of smaller deposits near the center than near the edge. He noted that in Andersen cascade impactors the air issuing from the nozzles moves radially outward along the narrow channel between the nozzle plate and the impaction plate. This flow at 28.31min -1 created a pressure difference of about 1 mm water between the inner and outer sections of the channel. The effect was most pronounced in the first two stages, where the pressure drop across the nozzles was also about 1 mm water. Here, the flow velocities in the nozzles, and hence the deposits, were smallest at the center and increased toward the periphery of the impaction plate. since the pressure drop across the nozzles was the smallest at the center and a maximum at the periphery. This effect was negligible in the lower stages because of a larger pressure drop across the nozzles. According to May (1964), this effect could be eliminated by increasing the nozzle-to-impaction-plate distance to three nozzle diameters and improving the nozzle arrangement to allow air flow to escape to the periphery more easily."

"I. INTRODUCTION(SILICA, THE LUNG, INFLAMMATION, AND FIBROSIS)Inhalation of respirable-size silica (0. I to 5 µm in diameter) deposits the particles in the deep spaces of the Jung where oxygen is exchanged. The resulting pattern of inflammation is substantially different compared to that observed from other inhaled substances such as carbon, polystyrene titanium dioxide etc. 1 Following the inflammatory reaction the body attempts to isolate the damage by walling off the area via fibrosis. 2 The unique nature of the inflammatory response to silica makes it logical to infer that fibrosis is a later-stage manifestation of the initial inflammatory damage. In addition to the inflammation extensive lysis and cellular death particularly to macrophages and neutrophils, can occur, depending on the dose of silica.' The ingestion of significant amounts of silica by macrophages and neutrophils produces an inflammatory sequence which activates the lipoxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism and produces platelet activating factor (PAF) and leukotrienes (LT).4·5II. CALCIUM IONOPHORE MIMICS SILICA TOXICITY IN VITROPhagocytic cells exposed to silica in vitro produce PAF and LT. This response is reminiscent of phagocytic cells exposed to the calcium ionophore (A23 l 87) in the presence of ionic calcium.6-8 A23 l 87 forms a complex with free ionic calcium which passes through cellular membranes, thus transporting calcium inside the cell. The increased intracellular calcium concentration triggers the production of small amounts of prostaglandins large amounts of LT. PAF and. depending on dose cellular death (see Figure 1 ). Could silica cause LT production and cellular death by a similar mechanism? How could silica - an inert solid - act in a similar fashion as a soluble stimulant? Clearly the negative SiO2 and OH- surface of silica can bind calcium ions9 and therefore could theoretically act as a solid-state ionophore releasing bound calcium inside of cells following phagocytosis."

This report presents a Bureau of Mines study on the time-dependent behavior of coal measure rocks for future implementation in stability analysis and safety evaluation of in-mine rock structures. This initial study focused on moisture adsorption rate and strength degradation of shales in Pennsylvanian coal-bearing strata in the Illinois Basin. A reaction of clay minerals in Illinois shales with atmospheric water vapor was hypothesized as the adsorption and strength degradation mechanism. Part of energy exchange between shales and the environment was attributed to a free energy controlled by pore pressure of the rock and partial pressure in the environment. The relationships between adsorption versus time and strength degradation versus moisture content were derived and correlated with the experimental data. Partial saturation at various levels of relative humidity occurs within approximately 2 weeks at room temperature. The strength of shales tested decreases linearly with increasing moisture content. When the moisture exceeds 7 pct of the dry weight, these Illinois shales become unstable. To this end, the moisture content is a good predictor of rock strength for shales.

A 1/2-ton experimental coke oven was installed ac the Bureau of Mines Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1948. Designated as the Tuscaloosa oven, this unit features a 17-inch carbonizing chamber, globar heating elements, and silica-brick walls designed to simulate as closely as possible the carbonizing conditions for commercial slot-type ovens. Because of the small force exerted on the oven walls in most tests conducted to date (probably owing to the practice of charging coals and blends at a moisture content approximating that normal to commercial plants operating in this district), little information has been obtained about expansion properties. Two sole-heated ovens have therefore been constructed and used as supplementary equipment for determining the expansion properties of coals tested in the Tuscaloosa oven. The reasons for constructing the Tuscaloosa oven, the details of design, the operating, characteristics of the oven and the reproducibility of results have been discussed in previous publications. 3 4 5/ The present report deals with the effects of substituting various high- and low-volatile coals for components of a selected base blend carbonized under conditions similar to those normally used for producing foundry coke. Results of tests of 11 coals and 14 blends indicate that several blends tested rave cokes having physical properties very similar to those produced from the reference blend.

The Virginia copper district is situated in North Carolina and Virginia. It contains many mines and prospects that were active at the turn of the nineteenth century. The Bureau of Mines, as part of the strategic-minerals program, began a project in September 1942 to investigate and explore the most promising of the mines in the district. The Seaboard, High Hill, Durgy, and Blue Wing mines were the sites of the main project activity. This report deals principally with these four mines. Drilling did not discover any new ore shoots but indicated the persistence of known ore shoots in depth. There appears to be no indication of impoverishment of copper with depth.

In recent years there has been no loss of life from fires in the underground mines of the Lake Superior district, but numerous minor fires and several serious ones involving loss of property and production have occurred. The iron-ore-producing companies recognize that well-equipped mine rescue stations are a valuable asset against the ever-present ranger of mine fires or the possibility of hazardous atmospheric conditions underground. Prompt action by trained and properly equipped rescue teams is recognized as the prime essential in saving lives, property, and production when fires occur. To achieve this purpose, the mining companies have provided themselves with mine rescue equipment and maintain trained mine rescue crews. This circular describes how one progressive company has provided, maintained, and improved upon such protection for its underground iron-ore mines on the Marquette and Menominee iron ranges of Michigan&apos;s upper peninsula. SUMMARY The central mine rescue station of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. at Negaunee, Mich., has provided the company&apos;s mines with competent and well-equipped mine rescue teams. The new central mine rescue station at the Mather mine "B" shaft has the distinction of having underground training facilities provided as a part of the station. The company maintains the largest trained force in mine rescue in the Lake Superior district, and mine rescue training is employed as a part of the accident-and fire-prevention program. One of the most important results has been the promotion of closer cooperation and understanding between the management and the workmen. In addition to the service rendered to company mines, the station and its personnel have given assistance to others. The station and its equipment have also been used for training several nearby community volunteer fire departments. This mine rescue station and its personnel have been a dependable and valuable asset to the community in which it is located.

The practice of using two or more main ventilating fans is common at large coal mines throughout the coal-mining industry. To assure adequate and efficient ventilation at may mines, such multiple-fan systems are necessary. The hazards associated with interrelated ventilating currents if a fan fails are controversial, and to date little effort has been made to study this specific problem and to determine corrective measures. The obvious questions are: 1. Is there a hazard? 2. Under what circumtances does it exist? 3. How serious is it? 4. What are corrective measures? Most members of the mining fraternity agree that reduced quantities of air and changed airflow patterns introduce potential hazards, especially where gaseous conditions exist when mechanized methods are used in concentrated mining 0 The seriousness of the hazard depends on the ease with which methane accumlates in face areas or haulage roads, the quantity of methane in workedout areas, and the extent to which reversed air currents interfere with escape and recovery operations after mine fires or explosions. These studies cover three mines and give the distribution of air for the specific conditions show. Each mine probably has somewhat different airflowpressure relationships between fans. Coal is a soft and brittle material. Drilling rates in the Pittsburgh coalbed using a drag bit exceed 3 ft/min at 2,500-pound thrust. However, maintaining the bit on a horizontal trajectory or parallel to bedding planes to attain lengths of 1,000 feet is difficult. This Bureau of Mines report presents a drill string configuration that can be guided through the coalbed. The angle of the borehole is measured periodically and by proper combinations of bit thrust and rotational speed (r/min), bit trajectory can be lifted or dropped to keep the bit in the coalbed. An example of a hole drilled to 2,126 feet is presented to show levels of thrust and rotational speed used to lift or drop the bit, the seemingly unexplainable events that occur, and the strategy used during drilling. Thrust levels during drilling range from 600 to 2,500 pounds. Hydraulic motors powered by a 30-hp, 440-volt motor provide ample power for drilling horizontal holes 2,000 feet long.

The Lincoln Terminal System (LTS) is a stand-alone computerized training device that presents high quality visual displays, and audio messages to a student. A keyboard is provided for student input. A variety of student-machine interactive programs arc provided. These programs allow the author/instructor to evaluate numerical entries and responses to simple and compound multiple-choice questions (where a compound choice is defined to be more than one choice, ordered or unordered from one or more list(s) of choices. Descriptions of LTS applications, lesson development procedures, hardware provided and support facilities required are given. A contract history summary, and a bibliography of reports published under three successive BoM contracts supporting LTS development, is provided.

This report describes the results of a reconnaissance survey of areas in California and Nevada considered favorable to beryllium mineralization. Pegmatite dikes, veins, intrusive sills, contact metamorphic, and disseminated deposits as well as tactite deposits in the former major tungsten-producing districts were investigated. A general geographic pattern of beryllium mineralization was found to be concentrated along a wide belt in eastern Nevada extending from the Ruby Mountains, Elko County, south through the Fish Creek Range, Eureka County, the Snake Range, White Pine County to the Virgin Mountains in Clark County, Nev., and Mohave County, Ariz. Sporadic occurrences of beryllium are in central and southern Nevada, and in the pegmatite dikes of San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego Counties, Calif., and the granite masses of the southern Inyo Mountains, Inyo County, Calif. Principal company activities are centered in the Snake Range, Fish Creek Range, and the Virgin Mountains, Nev., and the Inyo Mountains, Calif. Other areas in California and Nevada have been superficially explored with results indicating either limited or widespread, but submarginal, mineralization. Although beryllium was found to occur, to some extent, in many of the deposits, mining has been hindered by the lack of a market for beryllium ores and concentrates other than standard-grade beryl and also by the erratic pattern of mineralization and the high exploration and beneficiation costs required to produce a marketable product.

Mining as an extractive process alone is outdated and unacceptable to today&apos;s environmentally concerned public. Multiple land use must be considered as well. Only through effective preplanning can the full potential of reclamation result in a lasting asset for future generations. The coal industry is now recognizing that reclamation of mined lands is part of the mining cycle that must be planned and carried out in a timely and orderly manner. It is also finding that planning reclamation in advance of mining is cheaper and more effective than waiting until mining is completed. The decision to open a strip mine must be based on the results of studies to determine if successful reclamation can be achieved and whether the economic benefits to the company will be justified(1). Information regarding the physical, chemical, hydrologic and biologic systems operative at the site must be under- stood or reclamation will be a failure. Working together, engineers, management and reclamation specialists should design the actual mining and reclamation plan before mining is begun.

There?s no denying that mining is a male-dominated industry. Yet thanks to technologies developed over the last 20 years, societal changes in sex role stereotyping, individual determi­nation, and the willingness of companies to train women, there are no jobs in mining today where women are not represented. Women are drillers and electricians as well as drivers of heavy equipment and haulpack trucks. They perform jobs ranging from field exploration and metallurgy to clerical and janitorial and warehousing positions, from prospectors and underground blasters to geologists and land reclamation experts, from communicators to legal experts on mining law and more. The Women?s Mining Coalition, founded in 1994 to shepherd responsible legislative mining reform, estimates that 20 percent of the workers in the mining industry are women. Although women are concentrated in clerical and adminis­trative jobs, at least 10 percent are in non-traditional, hardhat jobs, claims the group. There are women in management, but the numbers in senior management remain small, especially in larger companies.

Provide low-cost fire protection for big bulldozers. Approach A fire protection system, previously used on mobile logging equipment and adapted to surface coal augers, has now been adapted for use on large mining bulldozers. How It Works Heat sensors mounted in the engine compartment and hydraulic hose areas detect the fire, usually before the operator does. This causes the system to automatically discharge A-B-C class dry chemical extinguisher through a fixed piping system. The system can also be manually activated from either the opera-tor&apos;s cab or ground level. Location of the principal components of the system are shown in the drawing The heat sensors of the sys-tem consist of bimetallic strip switches which operate at about 10000F temperature. Switch operation results in release of compressed gas from a small storage cylinder. The gas expands to blow the dry chemicals out of the nozzles, in a spray that lasts about 15 seconds. The compressed gas used is usually nitrogen, although carbon dioxide is also used.

Provide a full-scale test facility where the effectiveness of all types of subsidence abatement techniques can be evaluated under controlled conditions. Background Subsidence is ground movement resulting from the collapse of overlying strata into a mine void because of failure of the mine roof, mine floor, or support pillars. The failure may propagate to the surface and be expressed as a depression, cracks, or a sinkhole. The surface expression of such features may be delayed until long after mining has been completed. Subsidence has the potential to affect more land area than any other type of abandoned mine land problem. Subsidence also causes direct damage to real property, with significant financial loss and more importantly, presents a danger to public health, safety, and general welfare. Subsidence-related problems are considered to be one of the most important abandoned mine land issues. Backfilling of mine voids is the most common stabilization method used to abate subsidence and protect surface structures. Backfilling or placement of material is performed by hydraulic flushing or pneumatic stowing, using either in-mine or remote methods. The majority of the past subsidence abatement projects has been performed using remote methods from single or multiple boreholes. Other subsidence abatement techniques arc available. For example, various point support methods are used to protect small areas of the land surface and surface structures, without completely filling the mine void. These may be more appropriate under different conditions. Little documented information is available concerning the capability of the various backfilling methods for completely filling a mine void or providing long-term structural strength. Therefore, the Bureau of Mines developed a laboratory for controlled evaluation of backfilling technologies.

Improve the effectiveness of person-wearable self-contained self rescuer (PWSCSR) training by enhancing the memory retention of trainees in proper donning procedures. Background In the fall of 1989, a total of 185 miners and inspectors were trained by Bureau of Mines personnel to don the SR-100 PWSCSR using the Bureau&apos;s 3+3 method. With the exception of a few individuals, miners were trained underground in an area set up within their working sections. The instructional protocol was as follows: (1) after placing an SR-100 simulator (equipped with a cleaned and disinfected mouthpiece assembly) on the mine floor in front of the worker, a researcher guided him or her step-by-step through the complete donning procedure, (2) the miner was required to perform each step slowly, methodically, and correctly while being talked through the sequence, (3) following this pre-practice instruction, the apparatus was repacked and the subject donned the device without coaching, while being evaluated, (4) if an error was made, the worker received corrective feedback, the unit was repacked, and the entire donning trial was redone. This procedure was repeated until the miner achieved a perfect 3+3 sequence.
