This report compares a proposed 10/60 "piggyback" 02 generating self-rescue unit to the standard CO self-rescue unit with respect to work task interference. A simulated low seam coal mine was constructed and subjects performed locomotion, shoveling, cart pushing, and timbering tasks with the 10/60 or self-rescuer attached to their belts. Task completion time was longer on all tasks when wearing the 10/60 unit, although only locomotion was statistically significant. The 10/60 unit was bumped over 100% more often than the standard self-rescuer. Implications for design of the proposed 10/60 container are: 1) unit?s container must be extra durable to withstand the added abuse it is likely to receive by low coal miners; and 2) extra consideration must be given to preventing the device from slipping on the belt while working, especially in low coal.

This paper addresses establishment of an experimental system for measuring biodynamic response (BR) of hand-arm system at the NIIH in Japan. BR measurement system at the NIIH is nearly equivalent to NIOSH installed system. The feasibility of the system is examined through the apparent mass (AM) measurement of the empty handle and a set of calibration masses. Apparatus The grip force was measured by using the handle shown in Fig. 1. The handle has two force sensors (KISTLER, 9212) and one accelerometer (PCB, 356A12). A low-pass filter with 5 Hz cut-off frequency was used to the grip force from measured force signal. Figure 2 shows BR measurement system in this study. The push or pull force at the handle was measured by using the force plate (KISTLER, 9286AA). The grip force and the push / pull force were displayed on a monitor. The shaker (IMV, VE-100S) is used to vibrate the hand-arm system along the forearm axis (Zh direction) (ISO 10068, 1998; ISO 5349-1, 2001). In most situations force actions for operating tools are expressed by grip, push, pull and combined these actions. These actions can be simulated in the test system. AM was obtained by performing H1 estimator in the PULSETM system (B&K, 3109) and it is denoted at the one-third octave band center frequencies. [ ] Methods In order to investigate the reliability of the system, AM measurement of the handle was performed. It is assumed that the handle is rigid in the upper limit of adoptive frequency range in this study. This assumption is validated in AM measurement of the empty handle. A pseudo-random vibration in the frequency range of 10 to 1,250 Hz was used and its amplitude is 1.0 (m/s2)2/Hz with a flat power spectral density (PSD) in the experiment. Measured AM includes the mass effect of the measuring cap in a subject experiment. Compensated apparent mass AMc(?) is obtained by Eq. (1) 1-2.

This project had as its objective the experimental investigation of water capsule production utilizing the Southwest Research Institute's submerged nozzle encapsulation apparatus (U.S. Patent 3,389,194). Initial efforts on this project involved nozzle configuration and shell formulation optimization. The shell formulation developed on a prior program was modified during the course of the project to obtain the best balance of capsule breakage resistance and water retention. Subsequent effort centered on determining operating conditions which would produce the best quality capsules for each candidate shell formulation as determined by laboratory tests. Some preliminary work was done to increase the production capacity of the encapsulation equipment. The program was extended with major emphasis concerned with scale-up studies of capsule production capacity and the treatment of problems associated with grouting cartridge fabrication. During the course of the program, water-containing capsules were produced which have good long-term water retention, block resistance and adequate strength. Using a single-nozzle design, a production capacity of 15.9kg (35 pounds) per hour was demonstrated to give acceptable capsules based on initial results.

Ventilation is the most important safety factor in the production of coal because on it depends the safety, health, and efficiency of those who work underground. Without adequate and efficient means of supplying fresh air to the working faces, mining could not have advanced as it has. The extent of the workings, the increase in mechanization, and the increasing use of electricity are largely responsible for changes in methods of ventialtion. Ventilation in the early, days of coal mining was accomplished by means of a natural draft, created principally by a difference in the weights of columns of air between the intake and return openings: Later the furnace was introduced for the purpose of increasing the quantity of air in circulation. Mines continued to become larger, their output increased, men were employed in greater numbers, and more fresh coal surfaces were exposed. Coal beds near the surface, and practically free from explosive gas became exhausted, and deeper beds that liberated methane were opened as development advanced. Mechanical ventilation became necessary and was first accomplished by disc-type steam driven fans she old-.fashioned steam driven disc fan has generally been supplanted by the powerful electrically operated centrifugal fans in use at modern coal mines. In order to be secure against gas explosions and provide ample fresh air for persons employed in large coal mines, air must be conducted through the mine to all working places and to all other unsealed parts of the mince in sufficient quantities to dilute and render harmless all dangerous and noxious gases.

COBALT is a silvery gray metal which closely resembles nickel in appearance and properties although it is somewhat harder and more brittle. It is rather widely disseminated and is estimated to make up about 0.001 percent of the earth's crust as compared to 0.020 percent for nickel. Cobalt, one of the four ferromagnetic elements, is used for many magnetic applications. It is oxidation resistant, a property which when coupled with its moderately high melting point of 1,495° C., makes it useful in high-temperature applications. Although cobalt had been used by man as a coloring agent for glass and other ceramic products for 4,000 years, it was not isolated as a metal until 1742 and not established as an element until some 40 years later. Early in the 20th century, cobalt began to be used in alloys, and soon these applications displaced ceramics as the major consumer of cobalt. The use of cobalt in alloys gave considerable stimulus to production, and the world output of cobalt increased rapidly, rising from 400 tons in 1920 to 1,400 tons in 1930 and 5,500 tons in 1940. With the advent of the jet plane in the mid 1940's and the consequent increased need for cobalt-bearing high-temperature alloys, cobalt production again increased, reaching 7,900 tons in 1950. The increased demand for cobalt during the Korean war coupled with a large demand for stockpiling caused world production to more than double within the next 10 years, reaching a peak of 17,300 tons in 1959.

The 1965 Lignite Symposium, the Louth in a series and the third sponsored by the University of North Dakota and the Bureau of Mines, was held at Bismarck, N. Dak., on April 29-30, 1963. These symposia provide a forum for those interested in the technology and utilization of solid fuels, especially lignitic coals. As part of the meeting, a 200-mile field trip was taken including; inspection of (1) the 200-megawatt, pulverized lignit-fired Leland Olds plant of Basin Electric Power Cooperative, under construction near Stanton, N. Dak.; (2) the site of the Glunharold mine of the Truax-Traer Coal Co., Division of Consolidation Coal Co., where a wheel excavator was being assembled; (3) the operating Beulah mine of Knife River Coal Mining Co., subsidiary of Montana-Dakota Utilities Co., near Beulah, N. Dak.; and (4) the 400-megawatt, hydroelectric Garrison Dam powerplant, near Garrison, N. Dak.

[This is the sixth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative Agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of tines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935.-36.3/ The present report cover brands of gasoline represented by 1,490 samples plus thus: from the Pacific Coat, which ;sere averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from 8 to 10 companies on the same brands of gasoline, Whereas in other areas only one Company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that soma of the data are more representative than others. The inclusion of data from several cities within some of the districts has improved the report by reducing the number of brands reported by only one company. Severe changes have been made in the districts. A new district, Memphis, Tenn., has been formed to include Arkansas any western Tennessee. The Rocky Mountain area, have been divided into three sections. Salt Lake City and Denver form the Middle Rocky Mountain district; Laramie, Wyo., Idaho, Montana, and. Spokane, Wash., are included in the North Rocky Mountain district, and Arizona, New Mexico , and El Paso, Tex., have been combined to represent the South Rock Mountain district. The Cleveland district has been expanded to include Ohio ant. Indiana. Eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, and northern Virginia are included in the Washington (D. C.) district. The merits of the various methods for dry-quenching coke have been the subject of numerous publications and almost equally numerous controversies for the past 40 years.5/ Most investigators have concluded that dry quenching is advantageous. Some have based their arguments on the improved physical properties of the resultant cokes. Others have claimed little or no improvement and have based their arguments on the economies acquired from the recovery and utilization of sensible heat. The extent to which the method of quenching influences the properties of the resultant cokes is of importance in connection with the operation of both commercial and experimental ovens. On the other hand, the recovery and utilization of sensible heat are economic problems related solely to commercial oven operation and- depend on the method of dry quenching used and the demand for a low intensity energy source. The scope of the present Bureau of Mines investigation has been limited to a comparative study of the properties of wet- and dry-quenched cokes produced from six coals and blends carbonized at flue temperatures of 2, 000° and 2,400° F. in the Tuscaloosa oven.

The past full year of war has increased greatly the demand for virtually all kinds of fuel, and the Bureau of Mines research and service facilities have been extended to meet these unprecedented requirements. Liquid fuels, such as aviation and motor gasolines, are fundamental to modern warfare. Bituminous coal and anthracite are needed, not only to servo the expanded industrial program for which coal normally is used but also to replace natural gas, wherever possible, and fuel oil in the Eastern States, New England, and the Pacific Northwest. Railroad transportation with energy derived from coal is replacing much of the motor-vehicle transportation that has been stopped or curtailed to conserve rubber. Pulverized coal hoe been sound to be a satisfactory and cheaper substitute for fuel oil in metallurgical heating furnaces. Celloidal fuel - a mixture of coal dust and oil - may offer a partial substitution for curtain coal-burning equipment. Several industrial experiments have been made with this type of fuel. The expansion of the steel industry in connection with the war program has required a corresponding increase in the production of metallurgical coke and its associated byproducts - light oil, tar, ammonium sulfate, and surplus gas. If the war is of long duration and new reserves of petroleum are not discovered, wartime trends from fuel oil to coal probably will not be reversed.

The Bureau of Mines has constructed a special compression chamber for developing stress-strain relationships of mine backfill and simulating the high compressive ground pressures encountered in underground mines. A one-dimensional, or Earth-Pressure-at-Rest model is proposed for backfills subjected to these pressures. Results of the compression tests performed in the chamber indicate that reliable stress-strain relationships can be developed from these tests. The primary objective of the test series was to evaluate the effectiveness of compaction of common backfills in retarding ground closure. Analysis of the stress-strain data shows an eightfold reduction in relative strain in optimum well-graded, compacted backfills over poorly graded, loose backfill material. Analysis of the one-dimensional compression test data also indicates a significant retardation of transmitted stress in dense compacted samples of backfill and natural sands. Although not fully understood, a deformation mechanism is thought to occur at the intergranular contacts in cyclic fashion causing frictional heat loss and a reduction in transmitted stresses in the densely packed materials. The experimental values of transmitted stress are compared with theoretical values of effective stress calculated from the one-dimensional compression relationships developed by Hendron (4).3 These experimental values of transmitted stress compare very closely with the theoretical values of effective stress.

Regulatory processes associated with development of major mining operations in Alaska and British columbia were evaluated using specific case studies. Included were one hard rock mine in Alaska (Red Dog Mine), one hard rock mine In British Columbia (Snip Mine), and one offshore gold dredging project in Alaska (WestGold SIMA). Based on a comparison of the three case studies, it became clear that the primary incentives for cost effective permitting are: 1) early and continuing coordination of proposed project plans, designs and schedules with key regulatory agencies and local area residents and 2) development of a sufficient level of baseline information on air quality, water quality, wetlands, endangered species, fish and wildlife, and socia-cultural conditions to support the required permit application. The U.S. permitting process worked in much the same way as the Canadian permitting process. Disincentives of mine permitting include high initial costs for baseline data gathering. However, a relatively high early investment resulted in more efficient permit acquisition and reduced long-term monitoring requirements. A common problem Identified was the inadequate supply of trained agency personnel with the requisite technical and permitting experience. This sometimes resulted in poor decisions and unnecessary changes in project plans and schedules.

In response to the ever- increasing demand for high temperature materials, the Bureau of Mines instituted a program for the study and development of superrefractories, One of the major tools obtained for use in this research was an image furnace of the double-paraboloidal mirror type. Although extensive theoretical analyses of solar furnace performance may be found in the literature, comparable detailed information on the double-paraboloidal-mirror image furnace has been nonexistent. This report presents an analysis based on an investigation undertaken to ascertain the limitations and characteristics of the furnace so that it can be used most effectively. The quantitative determination of the energy available at the image, the control of this energy by mans of a 60-inch iris diaphragm, and its variation with position and time relative to the heat source used have all been dealt with in detail. The quantitative results were obtained using a specially designed waterflow calorimeter and these measurements, in conjunction with the theoretical analysis, are used to present a fairly complete description of the furnace and its capabilities.

The economy of Belize continued to show a very slight but still positive growth during 1986. The gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated to have been about $164 million,2 almost the same as those of 1984 and 1985. Foreign investors looked favorably on Belize because it had remained isolated from the sometimes turbulent political and social strife elsewhere in Central America. Reportedly, in late 1986, Guatemala had decided not to pursue its claim to Belizean territory and to give full recognition to that country. Discussions were to be held regarding any matters of mutual concern. New investment possibilities were oriented toward agriculture or manufacturing endeavors. Except for some interest in petroleum exploration, the minerals sector remained limited to the quarrying of construction-related materials.

Abstract-This study predicts the level of smoke that miners might meet while trying to escape a coal mine fire and describes how smoke would impede their safe escape. For this study, the authors assumed that miners exit through an escapeway adjacent to the burning entry, that some air would leak from the burning entry to the escapeway. The following conclusions were made: • A very low amount of air leakage to the escapeway can produce a critical level of visual obscurity from smoke. This shows that intake airways may be as susceptible to smoke visibility problems as return airways. • This critical level of smoke obscurity is reached much before a critical level of carbon monoxide is reached. • Small fires can cause a severe sensory irritation that further limits vision. Thus, reliable eye protection is very important. These results show that methods to guide miners through dense smoke will contribute greatly to saving lives during mine fires.

Variations in water percolation rates through saturated cohesionless hydraulic backfill (mill tailings) have been studied in relation to the many physical aspects of the system to determine the most important factors in causing these variations. A multivariable least-squares regression analysis of 135 separate tests shows that a reliable estimate of the water percolation rate through typical hydraulic backfill can be made if the bulk density (unit weight), specific gravity, and grain-size distribution are known or can be estimated. Equations for predicting percolation rate, coefficient of permeability, and seepage velocity are developed both for the range of data analyzed and for extrapolation. The prediction equations for use within the range of data studied are quite accurate, while the ones developed for extrapolation are less accurate but still give reasonable approximations of flow rates. The equations given are valid for cohesionless materials that are free of clays and micas, exemplified by classified mill tailings. The equation developed for predicting percolation rates is as follows: 1nP20 = 11.39147 + 2.853422 1n(VR X D10) + 0.1747436 VR X Cu -178.8039 D10 X D50 + 311.7034 (DSO )3, (1) where P20 = percolation rate, inches per hour at 20° C; correction factors for other temperatures are given in the text, VR = void ratio, dimensionless, D10 = effective size (diameter in millimeters of the 10-percent-finer grain size), Cu = coefficient of uniformity (ratio of the diameter of the 60-percent-finer grain size over D10), D50 = average size (diameter in millimeters of the 50-percent-finer grain size), and In = natural logarithm (log to the base e). The prediction equation for percolation rate is rather complicated, so for practical use a nomograph that simplifies the solution of the prediction equation was developed.

This study forms a part of Bureau of Mines continuing research on thermal fragmentation of rocks. The potential of internal heating techniques for rock fragmentation is discussed. A concept of rock fragmentation with rapid inter¬nal heating of a localized inner volume of rock is advanced The energy required for rock fragmentation is made available by creating a required vol¬ume of localized heating. The fragmentation of rock using the proposed method is analyzed and qualitatively compared with the results of experiments with Charcoal granite, Dresser basalt, and Sioux Quartzite. High frequency dielec¬tric heating below 100 MHz is used in the study as an example to examine the working of the concept. The selection of operating conditions for the experi¬mental heating is explained. Fragmentation of Charcoal granite and Dresser basalt test rock blocks is achieved for localized heating below 550° C. The heated volume required for fragmentation is observed to be less than 2 percent of the test block volume and the electrical energy consumption is in the order of 3.5 to 6 5 kwhr/m3 The method offers a possibility for in situ fragmenta¬tion of rocks, favorable for internal heating. The method is highly dependent on rock properties governing internal heat generation The efficiency of dielectric heating in the experimental study is observed to increase with increasing dielectric loss of the rock material, ranging from about 10 percent in Sioux. The direct method test was developed for general mine safety applications by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the early 1970's to measure the gas content of coal samples obtained from the relatively shallow depths of eastern U.S. coal mines. Over time, applications for gas content data evolved which required increasingly accurate desorption values. It became evident that some of the inherent weaknesses in the original direct method test could best be addressed by abandoning the water displacement based desorbed gas volume measurements. The ideal gas law based modified direct method (MDM) and associated desorbed gas volume measurement apparatus was developed to provide the most accurate desorption values possible for rock samples obtained from any gas-bearing strata. The MDM has a number of significant advantages, including: (1) increased accuracy, especially for low gas content samples, (2) a test apparatus with an integral sampling port to facilitate the collection of uncontaminated gas samples, (3) an inherent head space effect correction in the periodic MDM desorbed gas volume calculations, (4) measurement of positive and negative desorbed gas volumes, (5) elimination of differential gas solubility effects as a source of error inherent in the water displacement methods, and (6) a compact and rugged test apparatus that along with the elimination of the ?glassware? required for the water displacement methods, facilitates its use in the field.
