This Bureau of Mines report tabulates data on nitrogen-gas reservoirs and isolated occurrences of inert gases in several Williston basin oilfields. Recoverable reserves of nitrogen gas in the Minnelusa nitrogen interval within the areas of five oilfields on the Nesson anticline in North Dakota are estimated at about 1.27 trillion standard cubic feet, based on computer analyses of logs from over 300 wells. This volume of nitrogen represents a large source of high-pressure inert gas and warrants consideration of possible application in oil-production operations. Drill-stem tests made in two of the fields indicated that nitrogen can be produced at rates up to 28 million cubic feet per day.

Recently 30 men wore viewing the demonstration of a now portable electric arc-welding outfit. A few hours later 17 of the 30 men reported to the doctor for treatment. They were suffering from traumatic conjunctivitis. In two cases the gain was very severe and the symptoms were similar to those of iritis. orphine had to be administered to afford relief from pain. Only two men of the 30 wera not affected in some way from this exposure. These two men were thick-lensed orange-colored glasses. Several of the men wore orange-colored glasses with thin lenses, but the latter were not heavy enough to afford protection.against an exposure as long as took place. The distance of the eye from the are also in- fluences the possibility of injury. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the con- junctiva; the conjunctiva is the mucous membrane covering the inside of the eye- lids and part of the eyeball. Traumatic conjunctivitis is caused by foreign bodies in the eye, exposure of the eyes to high winds, dust, smoke, intense light from electric arc lamps, and from electric welding apparatus. In the instance mentioned above, the inflammation was due to the ultra-violet rays. The ultra-violet rays lie beyond the violet rays in the spectrum and are invisible to the eye. In some cases the effect is so severe that, in addition to conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the skin similar to sunburn is produced. The symptons of conjunctivitis caused by intense light or by the ultra- violet rays are marked photophobia (abnormal intolerance to light), excessive secretion of tears, intense starting of the lid, contraction of the pupil, some- times swelling of the lid, and small ulcers developing on the eyeball or cornea. Unless properly treated by a physician immediately, chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva, cornea, iris, or retina, and possibly blindness, may result. Under proper treatment most cases get wall in a few days. All treatments should be under the direction of a physician. That usually advised is to place ice packs on the patient's eyes three or four times daily. The pack should be left on from 15 minutes to an hour. The eyes should be irrigated with normal salt solution (a teaspoonful to a quart of sterile vater) or a saturated solution of boric acid several times daily. If there is a discharge of pus, a few drops of a 25 per cent solution of argyrol or a 5 per cent solution of protargol should bo placed in the eyes three to six times daily. The patient should be confined to a darkened room until his condition improves in order to avoid complications. These treatments will reduce the swelling, give the patient confort, and prevent the development of chronic conjunctivitis. In severe cases it may be necessary to administer morphine to relieve the pain.

1. A schematic diagram and a description of the apparatus are presented. 2. Five runs were made using gas having a hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratio of about 2:1 and sulfur concentrations ranging from nil to 1.53 grains per 100 std. c.f. 3. At constant space velocity of synthesis gas the product of the sulfur concentration and days of operation, with conversion of H2 + CO above 97 percent, was constant. With a gas containing 0.04 grain of sulfur ac carbonyl sulfide per 100 std, cu. ft ,, the conversion of H2 + CO remained over 97 percent for 40 days. During that time the heating value of the product gas (on a C02-free basis) remained relatively constant at 940 B .t .u. per c.f., based on dry gas measured at 600 F. and 30 inches Hg.

To furnish the information frequently requested by producers and suppliers as to the fuel requirements of the Federal Government , the Bureau of Mines , with the cooperation of the consuming departments and establishments , has collected the data herein , showing the Government's fuel consumption during the fiscal year ended June 30 , 1930. The following tables show the quantities and kinds of fuels consumed by the Federal Government in each of its departments and their principal branches , in each State , and in Alaska , Hawaii , Panama Canal Zone , Porto Rico , and the Virgin Islands . The separate departments and establishments were asked to supply information for each Federal building or other plant and , as to vessel fuel , the amount loaded at each port of supply . Fuels consumed in internal combustion engines are not included . The report does not include fuels used by Post Offices of the fourth class , since their fuels are not purchased by the Federal Government but are covered by an allowance in each case for light and heat . In some cases the data supplied represent receipts , which are approximately equivalent to consumption . The present study is believed to be the first effort to bring together the data representing the Government's requirements for the various fuels which it consumes . Figures showing the coal consumed by the Federal Government were gathered for the year 1922. These data are shown in an article by O. P. Hood and R. H. Kudlich of the Bureau of Mines , contributed as a chapter to " Industrial Coal ; Purchase , Delivery and Storage , " published by the American Engineering Council . The figures of coal consumption presented herewith are approximately comparable with those published for 1922 , a relatively small difference being due to the fact that the 1922 figures include the Philippine Islands and all other territory in which any coal was consumed by the Government . At the present time , the only data on Government fuel consumption that are published regularly are those compiled by E. B. Swanson , chief economist of the petroleum economics division of the Bureau of Mines . These are published annually by the Bureau of Mines in " Sources and Distribution of Major Petroleum Products , Atlantic Coast States , " and by the bureau in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute in the annual " National Survey of Fuel Oil Distribution . " It is believed that the data herewith will prove of interest and value to the fuel industries as well as to Government consumers and that it will also afford a basis for measuring future trends in the use of the various fuels by the Federal Government . Figures showing the quantities of the various kinds of fuels consumed by each of the executive departments and independent establishments , are given in Table 1. This U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report evaluates three stress-transfer-modification concepts for their potential in reducing longwall gate road stresses and closures. In each of the three concepts - packwalling, gob infilling, and entry filling -support structures are constructed on the headgate side of the panel parallel with or inby the face line. When the headgate becomes the tailgate of the adjacent panel, these structures are in place to accept stresses transferred from the mined-out panel. Using the USBM nonlinear boundary-element program MULSIM/NL, baseline models of typical longwall stress transfer behavior were developed for both intermediate depth and deep mining conditions. These models were verified by comparing model results with field measurements and observations. The stress-transfer-modification concepts were then incorporated into the deep baseline model to quantify the effects of each concept on tailgate closure. Modeling results indicated that entry filling is the most effective concept in reducing tailgate escapeway closure. Using only 18 m3 of a weak fill per meter of face advance (7.3 yd3 per ft of face advance), tailgate escapeway closure was reduced by 33%. By improving the quality of the fill, similar results were achieved using 50% less volume.

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes an investigation of the amount of respirable dust adhering to the surfaces of seven run-of-face broken bituminous coals. The number of respirable-size (0.9 to 10 micrometers) particles adhering to the run-of-face coal ranged from 1011 to 1012 particles per pound of coal and was approximately inversely proportional to the mean lump size of the coal sample, otherwise it did not vary significantly with the coal seam, mining method, or winning machine. Based on these results, about 16 lb of ordinary run-of-face broken coal would have enough respirable-size adhering dust to contaminate 1,000,000 ft3 of air up to the 2 mg/m3 level, if this adhering dust should become airborne. Although brief studies here suggest that a negligible amount of new respirable dust is formed due to fracture of the broken coal during dropping, dislodging of old adhering particles during secondary handling operations is a potentially dangerous source of airborne respirable dust.

As part of its regular program to provide timely information on domestic mineral commodities, the Bureau of Mines conducted an engineering appraisal of more than 1,300 lode and placer gold deposits in the United States to deter-mine their gold production potential. While these deposits were estimated to contain over 400 million ounces of gold, only 9 million ounces, or slightly more than 2 percent, was found to be producible at $35 per ounce under prevailing mining and metallurgical technologies. The study revealed that any significant increase in available gold in the United States is most likely to come from the discovery of new sources, intensive exploration and development of the more promising known mineralized areas, and development of new or improved mining and metallurgical techniques.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a mass spectrometer method for deter-mining the helium-3 content of high-purity helium. The work was performed to evaluate experimental methods for removing helium-3 from high-purity helium and to better determine the composition of pure helium used in research. This was accomplished by increasing the inlet sample pressure, ionizing current, and amplification of the current produced by the ions collected on a conventional mass spectrometer that had been modified. With these modifications, the helium-3 content was determined in the parts-per-million and parts-per-billion range in helium-4.

The heats of formation of oxalic acid and sodium, potassium oxalates, and lithium oxalates were related by solution calorimetry to the heat of formation of (COOH)2.2H20, a value believed to be reliable as reported in the literature. The following heats of formation were determined: (COOH)2(a), -198.1±0.1; (COOH)2(ß), -197.8±0.1; UAW,, -328.7±0.4; Na2C204 -316.2±0.1; K2C204, -321.9±0.2; and K2C204-H20, -393.5±0.2 kcal/mole. The heat of the crystalline transformation (COOH)2(a) ? (COOH)2(ß) was determined to be 0.30±0.02 kcal/mole at 298.15° K.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated recovery of manganese from basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking slags because the slags represent a large potential resource of a metal for which there is no domestic production. BOF slags were leached using fluosilicic acid, a byproduct of the fertilizer industry. Manganese and iron were extracted as soluble manganous and ferrous fluosilicates while the calcium and magnesium remained in the tailings as insoluble fluorides. Treating the pregnant liquor with sodium chloride, precipitated sodium fluosilicate (Na2Sif6) which was recovered as a byproduct. Manganese and iron were precipitated as hydroxide-carbonate salts with the addition of sodium carbonate to the treated liquor. Recoveries for manganese and iron were 73 to 83 and 67 to 70 pet, respectively.

This paper presents data and theorem to calculate the risk of experiencing undesirable lightning related events while blasting or while engaged in other lightning sensitive activities. The paper provides an overview of lightning hazards in blasting operations and a brief history of lightning related blasting accidents. Lightning continues to be the primary cause of premature initiations of explosives in mining, on average, over two such incidents are reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) each year. The energy contained in lightning discharges and how this energy sets off explosives in mining is presented. Three categories of lightning warning methods: public media, lightning detectors, and atmospheric electrostatic field measurement are discussed. The remainder of the paper presents recently acquired data on the spatial characteristics of lightning development. This data is used to estimate the risk assumed by blasters under certain conditions. Risk estimations are made for electric and nonelectric blasting if persons are evacuated when cloud-to-ground (c-g) lightning approaches within a certain distance. For example, about 0.6% of all c-g lightning strikes have no other c-g lightning strikes within 25 miles in the previous 30 minutes. The paper shows that a typical blaster using nonelectric initiation in a high lightning density area with a 100% accurate lightning detector set to alarm at 25 miles would have a lightning caused unplanned detonation every 14,000 years

Twelve subjects participated in an investigation of the biomechanical stresses of asymmetric lifting in stooped and kneeling postures. Three factors were manipulated in this study: Posture (stooped or kneeling), height of lift (35 or 70 cm), and weight of lift (15, 20, or 25 kg). Subjects were required to lift or lower a box every 10 seconds for a period of 2 minutes. Electromyography (PIG) of eight trunk muscles was collected during a lift in this period. The PIG data, normalized to maximum extension and flexion exertions in each posture, were input to a biomechanical model and used to predict compression and shear forces at the L, level of the lumbar spine. Results from the EMG-driven biomechanical model indicated that compression was greater when lifting to a higher shelf (p < 0.001), and indicated a significant interaction between posture and the weight of the lifting box (p < 0.01). Peak lateral shear was not significantly affected by any main effects or interactions (p < 0.05). Anterior shear was increased with increasing height of lift (p < 0.001), and also by the posture x weight interaction (p c 0.01). A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) indicated a complex relationship for recruitment of the eight trunk muscles, with the triple interaction being significant (p < 0.001). The results of this investigation will be used to evaluate safe loads for lifting in these restricted postures.

This paper, describing the operations of the Louisville Cement Co. in quarrying limestone for the manufacture of quicklime, is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on stone quarries throughout the United States. Those papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. This paper is one of a series giving the results of metallurgical tests conducted by: the Alaska station of the Federal Bureau of Iſines, on the recovery of gold from the black sands of placer clean-ups. The data given in this report were obtained from tests on a lot of black sand from a property located on St. Patrick Creek, Fairbanks mining district, Territory of Alaska. This property comprises the Sagan Fraction and adjoining bench claims, and is being operated by J. A. Lillie. The sand ad already been treated at the mine by amalgamation. A sample taken by Mr. Lillie and assayed at the station showed that the gold still remain ing amounted to ll cents per pound. As this gold content was sufficiently high to justify further treatment of the same, 770 pounds were shipped to the station for testing. The reader will note that the gold content is given in cents per pouni, rather than per ton. This is in conformity with practice in the district in valuing black sands, as the quantity obtained at any one time is small, much less than one ton. . The sand consisted principally of schist and quartz, with very little ilmenite and garnet; and no magnetite or sulphides. Most of the gold present as contaminated with quartz, as the free particles of gold had been removed by amalgamation at the mine.

During the last week in March and the first week in April, 1973, the Naval Underwater Systems Center measured the 76 Hz magnetic field strength (in Wisconsin and Texas) produced by both the elevated and (newly installed) buried Wisconsin Test Facility (WTF) north-south (NS) antennas. The principle result obtained from these measurements is that there is no measurable difference in performance between the WTF buried and elevated NS antennas.

The roles of main mine fans in underground mines are to induce airflow and continuously re- move hazardous gases and dust. While most larger mines use multiple fans to accomplish these tasks, many smaller mines employ only a single fan. This paper concentrates on those mines having only one fan to provide ventilation needs. If this fan should cease to function, it is likely that methane concentrations will in- crease in some areas of the mine. As a safety precaution, Federal Regulations require that personnel must be- gin evacuating the mine within fifteen minutes after fan stoppage. Powered haulage can be used to transport workers to the mine portal as long as travel is through areas where hazardous levels of methane are not expected. To determine where methane will accumulate along haulageways during a fan stoppage, air samples must be taken at specific areas and analyzed for hazardous gases. During this study, procedures were developed for measuring methane levels along the haulegeways that are used to exit a mine following stoppage of the main mine fan. Methane levels were measured in four different mines at selected underground locations during four planned fan stoppages. In these mines the measurements taken only at the specified locations showed that, if workers had used electrically powered haulage to exit the mine following a fan stoppage, the methane accumulated along haulageways during fan stoppages would not have significantly increased the risk of an ignition.

The Bureau of Mines has improved a mine dust incombustibles analyzer originally developed at the Bartlesville Energy Research Center (BERC). This analyzer provides quick, accurate analysis of the percentage of incombustible material present in dust samples taken from mine ribs, roof, and floor so that costly overdusting may be eliminated while still maintaining a proper level of incombustibles. The changes being effected on the present design of the BERC model IV rock dust analyzer should simplify its operation and calibration procedures, resulting in increased accuracy.

The problem of signaling to the hoisting engineer from the cage in a shaft mine has been given considerable thought and attention by engineers and mine operators seeking to Increase the safety and efficiency of hoisting. HISTORY R. L. Rutherford,3/ an employee of the Magma Copper Co., Superior Ariz., realizing the need for a simple and practical moving-cage signaling system, began a serious of experiments early in 1937, Available electrical moving-cage signal in operation at this date required that signal wires be installed in the shaft to make a simple, positive signal without wires, the first experiments used the pipe lines in the shaft for carrying the signal current, but these experiments were not successful.

"INTRODUCTION The Farmer prospect was examined by W. R. Green, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, in June 1944. As a result, studies of this property were included in a general preliminary investigation of the Etevens County lead-zinc deposits by the Bureau in 1945. The exploratory work was designed chiefly to supplement the surface examination by determining the nature of the mineralization below the zone of oxidization. The results of the small-scale diamond-drilling program undertaken at the property are presented in the following report.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization our resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. "Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements show that grinding of quartz particles in air produces silicon-based (Si- and SiO-) radicals which decay with aging in air. ESR spin trapping measurements provide evidence for the generation of hydroxyl and possibly superoxide radicals from a suspension of fresh quartz particles. The hydroxyl radical generation potential of the fresh quartz particles decreases on storing in ambient air and on the addition of catalase, superoxide dismutase, desferoxamine, or DMSO. Silica-induced lipid peroxidation also decreases on storing the fresh particles in ambient air. These findings suggest that oxygenated radicals play a role in the biochemical mechanism of pneumoconiosis in general and acute silicosis in particular.INTRODUCTIONThis communication summarizes our electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the formation of oxygenated radicals by freshly crushed quartz particles in a cell-free aqueous medium, and its potential role in the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis. This study was undertaken because the mechanisms by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still not well understood. 1-3 It is generally believed, however, that the action of quartz particles on the cell membrane is the starting point of the silicotic process. 1,4 Since the first step must involve surface reactions, characterization of the chemical structure of the surface of quartz particles has been the subject of several recent studies!-' For example, we reported that mechanical crushing of quartz under normal atmosphere generates silicon-based (Si• and SiO•) radicals which decay with time, and that these radicals are associated with a higher cytotoxicity of fresh quartz dust as compared to that of an aged dust from the same stock. 6,8 Independently Fubini and coworkers' have also reported on the formation of Si• and SiO• -type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. Gulumian and van Wyk9 have reported that quartz particles react with hydrogen peroxide (H202) to generate hydroxyl (•OH) radicals. These authors9 suggested that this process might contribute to quartz's pathogenicity but the mechanism of the -OH radical formation was not clarified. Earlier, Gabor and Anca10 had suggested that the cytotoxicity of quartz particles might be associated with the generation of some factor or factors possessing the properties of a free radical and hence capable of promoting the peroxidative chain cleavage of polyunsaturated fatty acid moieties of the phospholipids in the cell membrane. More recently, Weitzman and Graceffa 11 reported that asbestos is able to catalyze the generation of -OH radicals from H2O2. Their later work12 indicated that lipid peroxidation might be one of the mechanisms of tissue injury by asbestos."
