"The use of helmets during the war has accentuated interest in the advisability of using stiff hats in mines to protect the miners against falling rocks. About forty per cent of the accidents in mines are due to falling rocks or roof. A large number of these accidents could be prevented if the miners wore stiff hats or helmets.The use of head protective devices in minas is not new, for they have been in use for many years in Europe and in the Lake Superior District in the United States. In practically all of the mining districts in Europe stiff hats of some kind are required by the mine management. George S. Rice, chief mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, reported that in Germany, Belgium, and France stiff hats made of papier mache or felt rosin are in use. Similar hats are generally employed in the Lake Superior District. In building the subways of New York and Philadelphia it was the practice of engineers and workers to let the hair grow very long and to wear a close fitting cap or felt hat. In Germany the hats are high like the military helmets, whereas in France and Belgium they fit more closely to the crown. In England the practice is mixed. As a rule the miners use soft padded caps, but in Yorkshire many of the miners use sole leather, tight-fitting caps of jockey pattern with the seam forting a little ridge down the middle of the cap. These hats are very useful allow thin beds of coal, as in crawling one is very likely to strike his head a sharp piece of rock or on a timber. Of course, such mishaps are more likely to occur to a man not familiar with the mine. It must be admitted such hats do not stick on well, though this is usually due to their not being especially fitted. The German hat is particularly unsuited to an American-shaped head.It is interesting to note that on the continent tight cotton caps are generally worn over the hair and under the hard hat. This is a measure for cleanliness which is excellent. In low beds of coal share much crawling on hands and knees is necessary the dirt and coal dust sift down, making the miner black and dirty. In metal mines stiff hats are of especial use in shaft work; also in raises or high stapes. A small fragment of rock falling some distance either down a shaft or raise would kill a man if it struck him squarely on the head. A stiff hat or helmet may protect him and save his life. At a station in a shaft where men are loading the cage or skip, some kind of adequate head protector should be compulsory. A head-protecting hat or cup which is also a good insulator should be worn where there is danger of striking one's head against a wire carving an electric current."

The concept of limit burning velocities, formulated in an earlier Bureau of Mines report (RI 8127), is applied to the problem of flame propagation through tubes of finite size. The limit burning velocity for conductive-convective wall-loss quenching (process b) is (Su)b = [aPe,] where the proper choice of critical Peclet constant, Pe, is determined mainly by the ratio of contact-perimeter loss area to flame-zone cross sectional area. This ratio of loss area to propagation area relates to the shape of the flame front and its control by buoyancy and by boundary conditions. The comparison of (Su)b with previously defined limit velocities for systems mixed by natural convection allows one to assess the influence of tube dimensions and boundary constraints on the "true" or earthly limits for the three directions of propagation. The flame quenching caused by inert powders is shown to be similarly described in terms of a limit burning velocity, (Su)?b. The tube's surface-to-volume ratio (~1/ro) is simply replaced by the powder's surface area per unit volume of the flammable mixture. Thermal loss quenching by these "internal walls" occurs at a critical Peclet constant somewhat higher than that observed for tubes, and the problem is complicated by the finite heat capacities of the powders and particle lag effects in the flame front.

The Bureau of Mines devised a new machine-test method for measuring carbon dioxide inspired by a wearer of self-contained breathing apparatus. The new method compares favorably in speed and precision with standard man-tests in which the apparatus is tested while actually worn, and is scheduled for use in future approval tests for facepiece carbon dioxide 'measurements. However, man-tests will still be used to measure the efficiency of the carbon dioxide sorbent materials in closed-circuit breathing apparatus.

In this report, a description of mine practices, the preparation of roof bolts for laboratory experiments, the results of tensile-strength determinations, and a discussion of results of these tests are presented. Certain restrictions are recommended for roof bolts subjected to repeated bending, and two methods of complying with these limitations imposed by the restrictions are presented. The practice of bending steel roof bolts for installation in areas where the height of the opening was less than the length of the bolts required to support the immediate roof adequately has been adopted recently in several coal mines in lieu of sectional rods designed for that purpose. In addition, a few of these same mines have been reclaiming the bent rods and reusing them numerous times. The purpose of this study was to determine if these practices decreased the strength of such bolts and thus jeopardized the safety of the men working in these mines.

A major hazard to workers in underground mines is fire and the resulting contaminated air. Fire reaches miners thousands of yards away with carbon monoxide gas and other toxic fumes. The same ventilation system that furnishes fresh air to miners can also be the vehicle to carry contaminated air to remote locations. To reduce these problems, the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines entered into Contract H0242016, "Mine Shaft Fire and Smoke Protection System," with FMC Corporation, Santa Clara, California, to evaluate mine shaft fire and smoke hazards and to develop and demonstrate a low-cost, reliable mine shaft fire and smoke protection system that would be applicable to a majority of metal and nonmetal mine shafts, including raises and winzes, especially in deep mines.

"In a 1985 seminar, we were told that over-optimism abounds in Artificial Intelligence (AI), that AI is neither a science nor a technology yet, and that we will be both exhilarated and disappointed with AI. In fact, even today, there is no single accepted definition of AI; however, certain features have been identified by AI researchers as essential to consider an entity (e.g. machine or program) to be intelligent. According .to Shank (1987), these features include communication (to be able to communicate with), internal knowledge (knowledge about itself), world knowledge (awareness and knowledge about the world outside), intentionality (knowing what one wants and a plan to seek it, ie. goal seeking behavior), and creativity (being adaptable to changing conditions). None of these figures would individually define intelligence; however, each would be a part of intelligence in its own way.The prospects for the development of entities with AI have never been as good as they are now. The combination of advancements in computer hardware and .software along with new insights into the ways in· which we store knowledge and use it for problem solving has enhanced the potential for the creation ~f intelligent entities. After some unbounded optimism of a major breakthrough in the fifties and frustrating disappointments in the two following decades, it appears now that AI has emerged from research labs to industrial practice. This is confirmed by the growing number of repeat applications of AI in business and industry to the extent that AI can now be considered a technology.AI applications are categorized into several distinct areas such as Natural Language Processing, Speech Recognition and Synthesis, Expert Systems, Robotics, Machine Vision, etc. Of these practical realizations, Expert Systems (ES) has the greatest potential for meeting the decision-making needs of the manager in the ever-growing complex scoio-technical systems. Prof. Feigenbaum, an expert and leader on expert systems, has defined Expert System as"" ... an intelligent computer program that uses knowledge and inference procedures to solve problems that are difficult enough to require significant human expertise for their solution. Knowledge necessary to perform at such a level, plus the inference procedures used, can be thought of as a model of the expertise of the best practitioners of the field."""

This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the results of laboratory work in the design of instrumentation for obtaining the dynamic tensile strength of rock at minimum loading. Minimum loading is defined as the lowest tensile loading by pulse reflection to cause fracturing. The instrumentation for obtaining dynamic tensile strengths of rock cores evolved into the use of a compressed-air pellet gun to impact one end of a rock core, suspended by wires, at increasing increments of air pressure. Maximum strain was measured on most or all of the impacts, and the strain at fracture of the core was obtained by extrapolating the pellet velocity-strain curve to the pellet velocity at fracture. Stress at tensile fracture was obtained from the maximum s train, and the dynamic Young's modulus was calculated from the rod velocity by using simple rod theory.

A portable radon monitoring instrument capable of making on-the-spot measurements of the radon gas content of uranium mine atmospheres was designed and constructed. The monitor was tested in the laboratory and in operating uranium mines. Good correlation was obtained between the monitor readings and radon measurements made on mine atmosphere samples taken in radon bottles.

In 1986, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied parts of the 19,747-acre Lower John Day (OR-005-006) and 7,538-acre Thirtymile (OR-005-001) Wilderness Study Areas in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The study areas are located in Gilliam and Sherman Counties, OR, about 13 mi west of Condon. The area is underlain by the Miocene-age Columbia River Basalt Group. The Thirtymile study area is inferred to have 790,000 yd3 of subeconomic gold resources averaging 93.8 mg/yd3 gold ($1.21 yd3 at a gold price of $400 per oz) in two river bars. The Lower John Day study area has five river bars with gold occurrences totaling 1.0 million yd3 and averaging 13.5 mg/yd3 ($0.17 yd3) gold. A preliminary mining feasibility estimate suggests gold could be profitably mined in the study areas from placer deposits containing at least $3.83 yd3 in gold content. Stone, sand, and gravel occur in the study areas, but more accessible deposits are closer to regional markets. No mines or prospects are in or near the study areas; however, one lode mining claim, now abandoned, was located in the Thirtymile study area. Oil and gas leases cover both study areas.

This paper, describing the mining methods and practice at No. 2 mine of the American Zino Co. of Tennessee at Mascot, Tenn., is one of a series of papers issued by the Bureau of Mines presenting the mining methods and costs in various districts throughout the United States. Its purpose is to summarize methods recently put into practice whereby increased efficiency has been effected. These improvements have to do principally with mill-hole mining, slushing, contract labor, and bonuses. In general, this paper supplements earlier articles and brings them up to date. The Fairbanks mining district forms an arc 40 miles long and 8 miles wide on the north side of the Tanana Valley in central Alaska. This is a region of broad valleys and rounded hills that range in elevation from 600 to 2,600 feet Lode-gold production started in 1910 and has continued sporadically to the present, but the largest single mine produced only 40 tons per 24-hour day. Total recorded lode-gold production of the district is 241,000 fine troy ounces of gold from ore that averaged 1.32 fine ounces per ton. The ore was mined chiefly from narrow veins and veinlets alined along anticlinal folds at Ester Dome and the Pedro Dome-Cleary area. The only proven reserves are reported to be at the Ryan Lode at Ester Dome and at the Keystone Mines, Inc., holdings in the Pedro Dome-Cleary area. An inferred lode-gold resource for the district of approximately 4,000,000 ounces is considered to indicate only the order of magnitude of the lode-gold potential because of the absence of detailed data needed to evaluate the numerous deposits.

In situ stresses are important input data for the design of safe, stable stope layouts and extraction sequences. However, it is commonly assumed that normal and shear stress gradients in a stress field are negligible and, consequently, that stresses are uniform throughout the region of analysis. To evaluate these assumptions and to provide input data for an analysis of a shaft pillar mining plan, in situ stresses were measured at the Homestake Mine, Lead, SD, using overcoring on hollow inclusion cells and borehole deformation gauges. These measurements were used with conventional least squares, best fit data reduction schemes. The results showed that normal stresses within the shaft pillar were less than, but comparable to, those estimated from finite-element modeling. Shear stresses were an order of magnitude less than normal stresses and varied considerably from site to site. Possible causes of this variability include effects of scale, elastic moduli, anisotropy, and axial strain. Because of the variability, it is not possible to determine the magnitude of horizontal stress gradients.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, through an Interagency Agreement with the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command (TACOM), has successfully developed a steel expendable pattern casting process (EPC) for the manufacture of armorplate. The new armor is lighter and more ballistically effective than conventional rolled homogeneous armor (RHA), and costs less. An applique armor spinoff from the program was field-tested during the Gulf War. The applique armor withstood direct impacts from enemy munitions without failure.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in partnership with Strata Products tested the sealing capability of Ventstop®? as part of an ongoing mine fire control and suppression research program. Ventstop®? is a multi-purpose, inflatable device that is produced by Minvent Solutions and is available world wide for use in the metal and nonmetal mining industry. Ventstop®? is also used in the Australian coal industry as a temporary ventilation control device. The device can be quickly deployed, is reusable and can be placed in horizontal and vertical mine voids to control dust, fumes and smoke. Deployment, multi-day inflation and air leakage tests were conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory to determine the capability and limitations of Ventstop®? in a simulated coal mine setting. During the tests, Ventstop®? was also subjected to low level forces of a nearby methane gas ignition. It is thought that Ventstop®? could be used by the US coal mining industry to temporarily close an underground mine area in response to a fire or spontaneous combustion heating event, to temporarily redirect mine ventilation during longwall equipment moves or during stopping construction. This paper describes this inflatable temporary mine sealing technology and presents the results of the NIOSH tests. This report presents a structural analysis of the economies of Spokane County, Washington and 21 surrounding counties. An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. The Micro IMPLAN modeling system with the 1990 county database was used to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading industries, with respect to employee compensation, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown (or each county and the region. The total industry output from the Spokane Economic Trade Area (S ETA) region is valued at $22.3 billion. The SETA region provides $7.1 billion in employee compensation to a work force of 374,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total output, employee compensation, and employment. Both Spokane County and the region as a whole produce about 80 percent of total industry output for final demand with the remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. About $7.4 billion of the $22.3 billion SETA output is exported from the region. Spokane County exports about $4.7 billion, or 41 percent of the $11.5 billion Spokane County output. Exports account for more than 50 percent of the total output in 12 of the 22 counties within the region. Based on the output of the top 25 industries in each county and the SETA region about 9 percent of the industry output from Spokane County and 18 percent of the regional industry output come from natural resource based industries. For counties other than Spokane County, total industry' output from natural resource based industries represents from 12 percent to 81 percent of county output from the top 25 industries. Natural resource industries account for more than 50 percent of total county output in 8 counties within the region

"I. INTRODUCTIONA mechanism which is present in leukocytes and capable of releasing histamine from rabbit platelets was first described by Barbaro and Zvaitler in I966. A soluble mediator between rabbit leukocytes and platelets was also detected by Siraganian and Osier in 1971. This factor was isolated and characterized in 1971 by Benveniste et al. and named platelet activating factor i PAF). It was shown to be released from rabbit basophils through an antigen - IgE-dependent mechanism. The presence of PAF in human leukocytes' and its aggregation and releasing effects on human platelets were also demonstrated. Chemical analysis has shown that PAF is a glycerophospholipid with a choline polar head group. an ester-linked acyl chain at the second carbon and a nonester link at the first carbon.' The structure of the mediator was found to be 1-O-alky1-2-acetyl-sn-glyceryl-3-phosphoryl choline and it has been chemically synthesized.""' A variable portion exists in the alkyl group attached to the first carbon which can have a variety of molecular sizes such as C and C (where Cu is more abundant). Recent work by Pinckard et al."" has shown that there are at least five variations of the alkyl group.PAF has been shown to have a broad range of biological effects. Release of PAF from alveolar macrophages may be important in asthma, allergy, and shock states. In a rabbit model of antigen IgE anaphylaxsis. PAF can induce all of the effects of antigen challenge and. therefore is presumed to be a key mediator in production of anaphylaxsis. In addition to aggregating and degranulating platelets it is a potent chemoattractant."" and causes contraction of guinea pig ileum contraction of lung tissue and enhanced capillary permeability PAF has important effects in the kidney and is also known as the renal hypotensive factor proposed by Blank et al. who found the structure of PAF independently of Benveniste et al.' In producing these responses. PAF acts by a receptor-like mechanism. In platelets. PAF selectively desensitizes itself but not thrombin or collagen. In smooth muscle tissues a similar phenomenon occurs with anaphylatoxin or other stimuli.In vivo. PAF probably acts in concert with other agents in producing its various biological effects. It causes platelets to release histamine serotonin and RCS (rabbit-contractile substance formed from prostaglandins PPG2, PGH2 and TXA2) which contracts rabbit aorta. PAF can cause cells to release SRS-A and leukotriene B."

Automation of coal mining activities at the face offers improvements in worker safety, health, and productivity. Introduction of integrated computer-sensor systems to current mining machines will enable these machines to perform some of the most hazardous tasks through supervised teleoperation. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is pursuing the development of the enabling technology necessary to achieve this goal. The research program consists of both basic and applied research, each focused on the fundamental issues of computer and sensor technologies. Short-term research is directed to providing computer-assisted, remote supervisory operation of present underground equipment; the long-term goal is the development of progressively more intelligent mining systems. The research program includes a review of robotic machine and autonomous vehicle technologies and of current mining technology, which provides a base for developing innovative mining methods; research in navigation and guidance technology, emphasizing control of a continuous mining machine; research on coal-rock interface sensing technology for horizon control, and rib thickness control in highwall mining; the development of computer systems and hierarchical architectures for real-time control; and development of expert systems for machine system fault diagnostics and predictive maintenance. This report presents a brief background and the current status for each of these research areas.

Roasting research involving small , batch experiments was conducted to explore the use of solid reductants for converting nonmagnetic iron ore to a magnetic type . Three typical Minnesota ores were tested with one or more of the following reductants : Lignite , lignite chars , anthracite , bituminous coal , petroleum coke , peat , and pyrite . Reductive roasting was accomplished in a 3- by 4- inch externally heated rotating drum . Ore and reductant were placed in the drum and heated to a desired temperature , which was maintained for a predetermined period . Recoveries of over 90 percent of the iron in magnetic concentrates were achieved at 650 ° C , using lignite , some lignite chars , a high- volatile bituminous coal , peat , and pyrite . Pyrite is a novel reductant , which is superior to carbonaceous materials other than lignite and some chars .

The Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation to study the effectiveness of low-pressure steam and water spray in suppressing respirable dust at the tips of a saw-type cutting wheel. Suppression efficiencies were found to be proportional to the amount of the water or steam applied at the cutter tips. For equivalent water output rates, a maximum efficiency of approximately 80 percent was reached for both steam and water spray. Results from the steam and water spray tests showed an increase in suppression efficiency with an increase in particle size of 1 to 8 micrometers. The data indicate no advantages for using steam as a dust suppressant.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the third. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township-map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township.
