Tremendous volumes of petroleum ( crude oil and natural gas ) at present cannot be recovered economically . The feasibility of using nuclear explosions for production stimulation therefore has been investigated . Data from underground nuclear tests conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission were reviewed , and the physical effects were evaluated for stimulating petroleum production . Calculations of the effect on ultimate recovery of increasing reservoir temperature with nuclear explosives showed disappointingly small increases . Production increases caused by fracturing of massive low- permeability reservoirs appear technically and economically promising . Petroleum reservoirs that might be converted from submarginal to commercial production are being located and evaluated as to potential reserves and as a location for a field test .

The Bureau of Mines analyzed the structure of a high-grade metallurgical coke, carbonized at different temperatures in the range 500° to 1,000° C, through X-ray diffraction studies. Growth in the crystallite size with increasing coking temperature was calculated from profile analysis and compared with values obtained from the radial distribution function. The carbonization temperature appeared to have little influence upon the stack height, whereas the layer diameters more than doubled in size between 500° and 1,000° C. These results are comparable to those obtained from other studies of poorer quality cokes.

The apparatus and methods described in the following pages were devised and used by the writers in connection with certain investiga- tions of the technologic branch of the United States Geological Sur- vey, especially those bearing on the improvement of furnace condi- tions and on efficiency in the use of fuel. The Bureau of Mines, which has charge of such analyses and tests of fuels as were formerly made by the technologic branch of the Sur- vey, is using the same apparatus and methods in connection with similar investigations that are being carried on at the testing plant of the bureau at Pittsburg, Pa. The furnace conditions prevailing both in small plants and in large industrial establishments in this country are frequently far from satisfactory. If such conditions are to be improved, they must be more thoroughly understood, and means must be found to insure complete combustion of the fuel, and yet to permit operation with such an excess of air as will result in the greatest efficiency. In this work the services of the chemist are indispensable. A very important problem is the determination of the small percentage of unburned combustible matter that escapes from the furnace in the flue gases. Under ordinary circumstances so little as 0.1 per cent of unburned combustible matter in a furnace gas is equivalent to about 1 per cent of the fuel used; and for the determination of such small percentages of gas more accurate and refined methods are required than have ordinarily been available heretofore. It is the purpose of this paper to describe some apparatus and methods which have proved satisfactory to those engaged in the chemical work of the investigations mentioned. While these methods and apparatus have been designed more particularly with regard to analysis of furnace gases, their use is by no means limited to that purpose. The reader will readily see their applicability to other uses in which the sampling and analysis of gases are involved.

Improper combustion of natural gas is the cause of low efficiency in heating appliances , also the liberation of carbon monoxide , an insidious and deadly gas . Carbon monoxide is produced during the incomplete combustion of any carbonaceous material , and quantities as low as 0.2 per cent may product death in a very short time . For healthy atmospheric conditions in the home , in which the occupants are continuously exposed , carbon monoxide should not be present in amount greater than 0.01 per cent , which value is taken as the safety limit in this report . The tests herein reported give the conditions which produce carbon monoxide when radiant -fire heaters burning natural gas are used . The conclusions drawn are based on tests made on one type of radiant heater only , but the general conclusions should apply to other types of radiant heaters of similar construction . The gas consumption , gas pressure , orifice pressure , size of orifice , and heater adjustments were changed so as to obtain as many different operating conditions as possible . In a general way the tests were carried out under the same conditions that the heater might be operated in the home .

[The tremendous increase in mine mechanization since 1929 has increased markedly the application of electric power in and about the coal mines of the United States. Cutting, drilling, and leading machines have replaced hand-mining methods in nary mines. As a result, expansion of the gathering haulage has necessitated introduction of extensive feeder, trolley, grid other power wires. (1)3/ In spite of this vast mechanization the fatality rate from electric shock has been on the decline. However, there are still too many accidents, and efforts to eliminate electrical hazards cannot be relaxed. It is hoped that an acquaintance with the physiological aspects of electrical accidents will make workers end management aware of the lurking dangers of this very common and extremely dangerous form of energy.]

Recovering from low demand in 1975, raw mineral production in the United States maintained a steady climb in value and quantity throughout 1976, keeping pace with the gross national product (GNP), which increased 11.5% compared with that of 1975. The minerals industry, in the past, has met ever-increasing demand while keeping production costs to a minimum. To maintain this capability, technological research and development of more efficient processing methods must continue. The role of Government and its increasing involvement in minerals industry actions received unfavorable comment from various segments of the industry in 1976. Government pricing controls were of concern to most industrial firms marketing like products. Public land withdrawals in large blocks were of concern to the mineral industry.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coal beds in Allegheny County, Pa. It is one of a series planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. More than 7 million tons of coal was produced in Allegheny County in 1957. Of this, more than 5 million tons was cleaned mechanically in nine cleaning plants. The Bureau of Mines estimated that, as of January 1, 1953, more than 384 million tons of recoverable coal remained in the county in beds 28 inches or thicker.

This interpretation of the laws - of Italy has been prepared, in part, from an aclysis made by John W. Frey, for merly associate mineral economist, U. S. Bureau of Mines. It incorporates addi- tional data and comments offered by Enrico Giobbe Della Pitta, a well-known Italian lawyer, in response to a questionnaire. These comments were forwarded by Harold H. Tittmann, American chargé d'affaires ad interim, at Rome, and trans- mitted to the Bureau of Mines through the courtesy of the Department of State.

The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations. Freezing to dewater typical Florida phosphate rock slime as demonstrated in laboratory tests appeared to have potential commercial use because of indicated moderate energy requirements, good compaction of dewatered solids, and effective recovery of usable water. After freezing, thawing, decanting, and filtering, batch freezing of gallon-size 13.7 percent solids slime samples yielded 42 percent solids products. Cationic amine, used as a process additive, yielded 46.8 percent solids product with significant filter area reduction. Semicontinuous 8 stage freezing tests also produced thickened slimes. Cooling and freezing 13.7 percent solids slime from 30° to minus 10° C required removal of 183 Btu per pound of slime; Carnot cycle calculation indicated that the theoretical minimum energy to transfer this heat was 27.8 Btu per pound. To produce 1 ton of 44 percent solids slime from 13.7 percent sol-ids slime, the calculated theoretical energy required for cooling and freezing was 52.3 kilowatt-hours. During the research heat capacity and heat of fusion data were determined for the slime at various percent solids.

A linear array of shot and gage holes 30 feet deep in a granite outcrop was used to compare the size and shape of radial strain pulses produced in the rock when short cylindrical charges of cast composition B were detonated axially or at one end. The axially detonated charges produced radial strain pulses that had shorter rise times and larger peak strain than the strain pulses produced by end detonated charges.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard ISO 2631 [1,2] provides three methods for evaluation of human exposure to vibrations that contain occasional shocks or impacts. Part 1 of the standard specifies the running r.m.s. or maximum transient vibration method (MTVV) and the fourth power vibration dose value (VDV). Part 5 of the standard provides a method of computing the stress in the lumbar spine for humans exposed to multiple shocks. Alem et al [3] have reported application of these methods to data for tactical ground vehicles. This paper reports and compares VDV and spinal stress evaluations of more than 90 hours of vibration and shock measurements on North American locomotives engaged in through freight operations. The measurements evaluated in this paper were obtained for full crew shifts on 19 freight locomotive runs on mainline track in locations from New York to California. The shifts ranged in duration from 187 minutes to 497 minutes. The average speeds for the shifts were from 21.0 mph to 54.6 mph. All measurements were made on locomotives hauling freight trains in regular revenue service. Data Acquisition and Processing The results reported here were computed using test data acquired from a tri-axial seat pad, accelerometer at a sample rate of 400Hz with an anti-aliasing filter corner frequency of 100Hz. The VDVs and the lateral and longitudinal spinal stress values were computed directly from the acquired test data according to the procedures specified and described in [1] and [2]. The vertical spinal stress values were computed by converting the as-acquired test data to a sample rate of 160Hz for input to the vertical spine model, as required in [2]. The conversion of the test data from the as-acquired sample rate of 400Hz to the required sample rate of 160Hz involved up sampling or interpolating the test data to an equivalent sample rate of 800Hz, band limiting the resultant data with a low-pass filter corner frequency of 60Hz and finally down sampling or decimating the 800Hz data to a sample frequency of 160Hz. Discussion The vertical VDVs computed according to [2] for the 19 shifts ranged from 2.68 to 9.33 m/s1.75. In all but one case, the vertical values were greater than the values for the lateral or longitudinal directions. Note that the health guidance in [1] puts the lower boundary of the health guidance caution zone at a VDV value of 8.5 and the upper boundary at 17 m/s1.75. The daily equivalent static compression dose computed following [2] ranged from 0.123 to 0.434 MPa. Health guidance provided in [2] states that there is a low probability of an adverse health effect if the daily dose is less than 0.5 MPa.

"INTRODUCTION During recent years, roof bolting has become widely accepted as a systematic method of supporting both coal- and metal-mine roofs. Today, over 2 million roof bolts are installed monthly. Most of the information on bolt installation procedure reported to date (1,2,3,4,5,6) 3/ has been obtained by trial and error by individual groups or operators. To insure good roof control, experience and field tests have indicated that roof bolts should be installed immediately after the exposure of new roof, and they should be preloaded enough to minimize sag of the roof over the opening. The question of the proper initial preload for roof bolts is under study, although it is a general practice to impose an initial load on a bolt of approximately 10,000 pounds. This created a problem of measuring bolt loads at installations in underground mines, which was partly solved by using a commercial-type torque wrench; a device that permits a direct reading of the torque applied to the nut on a roof-bolt assembly from which the corresponding load can be determined by referring to specifications furnished by the manufacturers. However, considerable apprehension was expressed regarding the accuracy of this measuring procedure because of variations in the manufacture of roof-bolting materials and the degree of care exercised in making bolt installations. In the process of loading a bolt, only a small part of the effort is expended in producing strain in the bolt - the larger part of the effort is used in overcoming frictional effects in the nut-bolt-washer assembly. These frictional effects are subject to many factors, such as condition of threads, type of lubrication, if any, the finish on the nut and bearing plate, and the alinement of the bearing plate on the bolt. The object of this investigation was to determine the accuracy with which the load developed in a slotted-type roof bolt installed in a conventional manner in shale or sandstone roof rock can be determined from the torque applied to the nut.This report is the first of a series relating to basic research in roof bolting in underground mines. A future report will cover results obtained using expansion-type bolts under similar conditions. Other reports will consider the efficiency of bolt anchorages, the long period stability of bolts, and the design of safe and efficient roof-bolting systems."

Gas occurs in coalbeds in an adsorbed and a free gas state, Adsorbed gas is stored in the micropore structure and its transport is governed by Fick's law. The free gas occurs in the. fracture system and flows according to Darcy's law. These two modes of mass transport are interdependent. Production decline curves of coal-gas wells are of the constant percentage decline type and, thus, show no indications of flow characteristics peculiar to coal-gas reservoirs. The effectiveness of surface boreholes as a degasification scheme depends upon both good fracture permeability and a high fracture density. Conventional methods of reservoir engineering analysis are not applicable to coalbeds.

In 1986, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 7,940-acre Southern Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Area (CA-060-029), and the 5,750-acre Western Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Area (CA-060-028) in order to evaluate their mineral resources. The wilderness study areas are located in San Diego County, CA, about 20 miles southeast of San Diego. No mineral resources were identified in the Southern or Western Otay Mountain Wilderness Study Areas, based on literature, field observations, and sample results. The wilderness study areas are underlain by a complex blend of Late Jurassic, moderately metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Evidence of mineralization is not obvious.

"IntroductionThe behavior of dust clouds in mine atmospheres has been a subject of longstanding interest due to both health and safety reasons. Pioneering studies in Germany and SMRE focussed on ambient dust concentration, principally aimed at determining optimum velocities for effective dilution. A summary of studies related to this area is provided by Hall,(l) Efforts to understand dust deposition from the explosion hazard point of view led to experiments in return airways (2-4) followed by experiments in longwalls.(5) Concerted efforts, either experimental or theoretical, were not made until recently to relate ambient concentration with dust deposition in mines. In 1974 Hwang et a1 (6) developed a computer model to predict dust concentration which considered deposition-concentration relationships. Also, experimental studies involving concurrent dust deposition and ambient concentration were conducted in the U.S. by Courtney et al (7 ) in operating mines. Efforts to relate theory with experimental results have been made by Owen (8) and Hwang et al (6 ) for dust deposition. There has been limited work, however, to determine the application of the theories and assumptions from aerosol sciences for modeling dust flows in mine atmospheres. (9 ) This is the objective of the work currently underway in the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust since· 1983 under a project titled, ""Prediction of Ambient Dust Concentration in Mine Atmospheres."" The scope of the project activities include:1. Development of a mathematical model to predict dust deposition and concentration in mine atmospheres.2. Experimental studies on dust transport and deposition in mine airways.3. Comparison of the model results with the experimental data."

Shuttle car trailing cable splices were tested for resistance to failure upon being subjected to repeated bending, abrasion, and tensile shocks using a new testing method that closely simulates shuttle car induced stress. The results show that under normal stresses, splices can be made to withstand the equivalent of three months of operational use. Restoring the tensile strength to the conductors is found to be as critical as restoring flexibility. Splices in which the conductors are of slightly unequal length did not present as serious a workmanship problem as previously thought since test results show that the conductors tend to equalize when longer cables, in contrast to short cables employed in previous testing methods, were used. Dynamic recordings of cable tensile stresses are presented for a shuttle car and the new simulated testing method. Two simple but effective methods for removing insulation using a knife and a pair of pliers are described. None of the designs tested for a sacrificial splice covering were satisfactory.

This paper is the first of a series that is to appear on smelting in the lead blast furnace. The objects of this investigation are to determine the conditions obtaining within the blast furnace by direct experimentation, and to correlate the behavior of the furnace at various times with the main factors governing the operation of the blast furnace, and metallurgical losses. It is with some diffidence that I venture to address the Montreal Section of the Society of Chemical industry on the subject of motor fuel from coal at a time when crude petroleum is produced in greater quantities than at any time in history, and at a time when the known reserves exceed all expectations, even the optimistic estimates of the Committee of Eleven of the American Petroleum Institute. Not only are new fields being discovered in America a -an embarrassing frequency but sources outside of the North American Continent show, unmistakable signs of adding materially to the world's sources of oil. Were it not for the tremendous scientific and technical importance of the work done in the past few years in transforming coal into liquid motor fuels, I should prefer to let this subject rest until a more propitious time, such as prevailed some years ago, when the gasoline consumption curve was rising rapidly and the production curve was slowing in its upward rise. That was the period which stimulated the researches which resulted in tetra ethyl lead and anti-knock gasolines on this side of the Atlantic and in methanol, synthetic gasoline and hydrogenation of coal on the other side. Some of you will recall a symposium on Motor Fuels and Oil Conservation held at the Chemists' Club n New York in September; 1925. Dr. R. L. Brown and I presented a paper at this meeting on "Complete Utilization of Coal and Motor, Fuel, in which we pointed out that coal was the most likely raw material source of gasoline substitutes if and when needed. We grouped the present and future, processes' for obtaining motor fuel from coal in three classes, namely:
