The microstructures of a CF2Br2-inhibited methane flame and its uninhibited analog have been determined using molecular beam-mass spectrometry. The slightly lean flames were stabilized on a cooled porous plug burner at reduced pressure. Composition profiles of stable, intermediate, and radical species and temperature profiles were obtained. Comparisons of the uninhibited and inhibited flame profiles revealed the following inhibition effects; a shift of the primary reaction zone to higher temperatures, a higher maximum flame temperature, an increase in the CH3 concentration, and a reduction in the H2CO, H, 0, and OH concentrations. Kinetic analyses of the data yielded rate coefficients at flame temperatures for the reactions H + CH4 ? CH3 + H2, H + O2 ? OH + O, CO + OH ? CO2 + H, and CH3 + O ? H2CO + H. CF2Br2 is judged to decay by thermal decomposition and abstraction reactions.

The object of this investigation was to correlate the crushing strength of green pellets prepared from magnetite, specular and earthy hematite with the particle size of these respective raw materials. In this study no attempt was made to correlate the strength of fired pellets and particle size. The effect of particle size upon a number of fine ores and concentrates was studied. Much of the low-grade ore reserves in the Lake Superior Region must be finely ground before concentration and then agglomerated for iron and steelmaking processes. Fine natural ores also must be agglomerated. Pellets constitute an important type of agglomerate. Considerable handling occurs during screening to remove undersize and oversize pellets, and in transfering green unfired pellets from the balling machines to the heat-hardening equipment. As a result the strength of the green pellets is a factor of great importance.

Information regarding the pores or voids in reservoir rocks is vitally important in the scientific extraction of petroleum from natural underground reservoirs, and petroleum technologists concerned, with subsurface, conditions have devised various methods that give reasonably accurate information as to the porosities of oil and gas-bearing sands.5/ In this, work, several investigators have made use of the experience of the ceramic and other industries. The method of determining the effective porosity of oil sands described in this report falls within the general classification of gas-expansion methods. It was devised and developed at the United States Bureau of Mines Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla., as a part of the research dealing with fluid and energy relations in reservoirs and improved oil-recovery methods. The apparatus and procedure are well adapted to the requirements of the Bureau, and the following detailed description has been prepared so that others may make use of the information. A tabulation at the end of the report gives the results of several hundred porosity determinations for oil sands in fields of 11 States.

The organic act passed by Congress in 1910 instituting the Bureau of Mines provided that the director of the bureau should promulgate such investigations as might be necessary to determine the causes of mine accidents and the best methods of preventing them. With the object of accident prevention in view, Director Joseph A. Holmes, and others who were pioneers in the bureau, conceived the Plan of having first-aid and mine-rescue training as one of the major activities of the Bureau. Out of this plan grew the first-aid and mine-rescue contests, which have been featured as an incentive for men to take courses in this type of mine safety training. The first appropriation for mine-accident investigations became available on July 1, 1908, under the jurisdiction of the U. S. Geological Survey, with Dr. J. A. Holmes in active charge. During 1908 there had been some first-aid training in the Pennsylvania anthracite field and a start made in Illinois, although there appears to be no exact information as to when or where first-aid training in the mining industry first became a reality, it is generally conceded that the St. John's ambulance corps of Scotland was one of the first - if not the first - to make the work effective. In 1911, to celebrate the establishment of the Bureau of Mines and the formal opening of the Pittsburgh, Pa., station, a first-aid and mine-rescue demonstration was conducted on Forbes Field, Pittsburgh. President William Howard Taft and many other men notable in public life were 2 resent. This was the first general national contest of the kind held it the United States; and since then there have been a number of nation-wide first-aid and mine rescue contests, as well as some which have been international in scope. There are over one hundred first-aid and mine-rescue contests of various kinds held annually in connection with mining and the allied industries.

In order to conduct these investigations in an orderly manner they are carried out under a published schedule of tests known as Schedule 2C, which specifies detailed requirements for motors, controllers, etc., and fees covering the various inspections and tests made as part of a routine investigation.

This paper presents a review of published investigation dealing with the importance of sulfur compounds in the deterioration of materials or providing some basis for estimating the extent of loss shareable to such air pollution. Materials included are cement, stone, metals, paint, leather, paper, sand cloth. The investigations may be divided into two classes, one of the laboratory type in which the sulfur content and the humidity of the air were controlled and the other dealing with the exposure of materials to atmospheres not under control. The first type of work has shown that cement is subject to deterioration by the action of sulfur dioxide gas. The experiments with stone indicate that although limestone takes up sulfur dioxide, from the air, moist sulfur dioxide-air mixtures alone cannot be used for establishing- the comparative weathering- qualities of the different types of stone by accelerated test methods. Laboratory tests indicate that sulfur compounds in the air accelerate the corrosion of iron, steel, zinc, copper, and nickel at normal air temperatures and at certain relative humidities. It has also been indicated that certain types of paint are, affected by high sulfur dioxide concentrations, and that paper is attacked by sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere. The investigations of the second type show the amount or variation of corrosion in different localities and under different types of exposure. The investigations (10) (18)4/ during which sulfur determinations were made indicate that sulfur dioxide is a main controlling factor in the corrosion of iron and steel but according to Quick (18) may not be for some nonferrous metals. In general, the laboratory tests do not Jive definite data on the loss due to sulfur compounds at the concentrations normally found in the air. The data from atmospheric exposures are not complete from the standpoint of the exact effect of the sulfur compounds. Damage to materials so exposed is affected by factors such as other chemical contaminants, humidity, rainfall, solid deposits, and sunlight. Data from the Bureau of Mines routine method for the analysis of crude petroleum are used to characterize crude oils. Some data are used directly while other data are used to calculate the aromatic) naphthene) and paraffin contents of the distillation fractions and the correlation index of the paraffin-naphthene portion of the fractions. The calculated properties show significant differences in composition between crude oils. The methods of calculation and interpretation of data are explained and illustrated.

The number of persons fatally injured in the California petroleum industry in 1931 was 30, a decrease of 20 fatalities or 40 per cent from the number killed in 1930. As a result of the decrease in the number of fatalities for 1931, the fatality curve of the California petroleum industry reached its lowest point in nine years. Although reductions in personnel--which permitted the retention of a select and experienced class of workmen, decreased active field-development work, and curtailed production--undoubtedly have had a marked effect on reducing the number of fatalities in 1931, the decrease also has resulted from continued accident-prevention efforts. Statistics show that a direct relationship exists between development activity and the number of men accidentally killed in the drilling and producing division of the California petroleum industry. For example, when the average number of drilling wells in 1930 was 29 per cent less than in 1929, the number of men accidentally killed at drilling wells dropped 48 per cent; and when the average number of drilling wells in 1931 decreased 52 per cent from 1930, the number of fatalities at drilling wells decreased 58 per cent. The relationship between field-development work and fatality frequency is significant because each year at least 50 per cent of all the fatalities in the California petroleum industry occur in the drilling and producing division. This relationship should serve to guide the accident-prevention efforts of the industry, especially in the drilling and producing division, toward checking an increase in fatal accidents when development activity again takes an upward trend.

This report presents a new procedure for analyzing the orientations of rock fractures in an engineering site. This procedure, coded in a computer program, identifies clusters or groupings among the fracture orientations and calculates (1) the mean orientation of the fractures within each cluster and (2) the dispersion or scatter among these fracture orientations. Data points are represented by intersections of joint normals with the upper hemisphere, which is divided into 100 equal-area quadrilateral patches. The points in adjacent patches where the Poisson distribution test shows significant concentrations are assigned to a single cluster. For a cluster whose fracture orientations follow Arnold's hemispherical normal distribution, a confidence interval for the fracture orientation mean is calculated by applying Fisher's estimates. The technique is applied to the treatment of three examples.

These tests showed that the amount of evolved gases and their relative proportions varied with the temperature. From these results, graphs were prepared by which the temperature at which the coal was oxidized could be estimated thus giving a possible means of detecting incipient heating.]

"Over the past twenty years, there have been numerous studies which have attempted to correlate the prevalence of Coal Workers' Pneumoconiosis (CWP) with different characteristics of the coal seam. Some investigators have tried to find a relationship, or the lack of a relationship, between the rank of coal seams and the incidence of CWP. Others have attempted to show that there is a positive correlation between the mean mass of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere and the prevalence of CWP. Still others have tried to determine the influence of the quartz content of respirable dust on the incidence of CWP. Unfortunately, many of these different investigations have conflicting conclusions.One area of research with conflicting conclusions deals with the relationship between the rank of the coal and the incidence of CWP. For example, an inves¬tigation conducted in Pennsylvania and West Virginia coal mines concluded that the prevalence of CWP increases with an increase in coal rank (1). A study in Great Britain also observed a close relationship between the rank of coal and the prevalence of CWP (2). However, another study involving 312 Appalachian coal miners concluded that the association between coal rank and CWP might be fortuitous and that other factors may be more important (3). In addition, an investigation involving 2,600 miners during a period of twenty years in Great Britain established that there is only a weak correlation between the prevalence of CWP and the rank of the coal (4). Consequently, it appears that there is still uncertainty as to whether or not the rank of the coal seam has an influence on the development of CWP.Another area of investigation concerns the relationship between the mean mass of respirable dust present in the mine atmosphere and the prevalence of CWP. A study involving 4,122 miners over a period of ten years in Great Britain noted a high correlation between the mean mass of respirable dust and the incidence of CWP (5). Another investigation involving 3,154 British face workers con¬cluded that the overall mass of respirable dust is the factor most closely related to the ten-year attack rate of CWP (6). However, a study conducted in thirty-one mines in the United States concluded that it is doubtful that the quantity of respirable dust alone is responsible for the difference in the prevalence of CWP (7). Even though there are conflicting conclusions, there are many more investigators who confirm, rather than deny, the relationship between the mean mass of respirable dust and the development of CWP.The third subject of investigation is the role of quartz in the incidence of CWP. For example, two studies in Great Britain concluded that the quartz content in coal mine dust has no relationship to the prevalence of CWP (8,9). But a study involving 312 Appalachian coal miners revealed that the level of exposure to free silica plays an important role in the development of CWP (10). Once again, the conclusions reached by different researchers are conflicting.Probably the most important factor in the discrepancy among the studies is the variability among different coal mines. A mine operating in an inherently ""dusty"" seam may have a low concentration of respirable dust while a mine operating in a less dusty seam may have a high concentration of respirable dust. This discrepancy is a result of variables such as the effectiveness of ventilation or the efficiency of the water sprays. Consequently, it is very difficult to compare the dustiness of different coal seams by in-mine measurements of the respirable dust concentration. A laboratory test would more accurately characterize a coal seam according to its respirable dust production."

The objective of this Bureau of Mines research was to compare the size distribution of respirable quartz collected at coal mines with that of several reference standards used to quantify quartz in coal mine dust samples. Particle size measurements were made on 23 samples and 4 ref-erence standards using a scanning electron microscope in the backscatter electron mode of operation, interfaced with an image analysis system. The Mine Safety and Health Administration provided the 23 respirable coal mine dust samples, which were collected at surface and underground coal mines in 7 States. The accumulated particle size measurements in-dicate three of the reference standards, minus 5-um Min-U-Sil, minus 5-um Supersil, and NBS 1878, would be preferred over the fourth, Silver Bond B, for quantitative quartz determinations in coal mine dusts by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectrometry.

For the past three or four years attention has been attracted to the deposits of lead vanadate in the Goodsprings , Nevada , district . Some ore running as high as 9 per cent 205 has been produced , but most of it runs from 0.5 to 3 per cent . Only a little ore , and that of the richer sort , has been shipped , since the low- grade ore will not stend the cost of shipment and no concentration mill has been available . Preliminary experiments indicate that chemical treatment of the low- grade ore without concentration is not feasible . Its treatment therefore involves two distinct problems ; first , mechanical concentration ; and second , a smelting or chemical treatment to obtain the lead and vanadium in marketable form . Upon this basis the work has been conducted . The writer wishes to acknowledge the excellent work done by J. T. Norton and Virgil Miller on table concentration and by J. E. Conley , who suggested and did preliminary work on the direct smelting method . Many helpful suggestions were received from Dr. S. C. Lind and John Gross of the Bureau of Mines . The Iron Mountain investigations were part of a comprehensive program for making a national inventory of raw materials used in the production of steel. A tentative program of core drilling by the Bureau of Mines was set up for exploration of more promising iron deposits. Iron Mountain was selected as worthy of investigation because it could serve as a potential source of ore for the war-created steel plant at Fontana, Calif. The deposits were reported on by an engineer in October 1943. The purpose of the project was to determine the lateral and vertical extent of ore bodies and to obtain accurate material data on them.

The Bureau of Mines has undertaken research to elucidate the chemistry involved in the efficient recovery and control of minor elements in base metal smelting operations. These elements should be effectively recovered not only because they have commercial value, but also because of their potential hazard to workers' health and the environment, if they are not controlled during processing. Cadmium, a minor metal in zinc ores, is the subject of this report. The roasting step of the complex zinc-smelting process was chosen for investigation because of the high potential for removing cadmium by volatilization during this primary stage. Commercial roaster feed materials were used to determine the sequence of reactions and the effect of these reactions on the volatilization of cadmium. Electron microprobe examination of both the commercial roaster product and oxidized sulfide solid solutions prepared in the laboratory showed that oxidized iron was of prime importance in preventing cadmium volatilization. The mechanism by which iron prevents cadmium volatilization is proposed, and a preheating technique is recommended for more effectively recovering cadmium prior to roasting.

Computing average grade and tonnage either for an entire ore deposit or for individual blocks of ore is a continuing problem in mining. As part of a research program, investigating application of statistical techniques to mine sampling, Bureau of Mines engineers at the Denver Mining Research Center have made extensive use of an electronic digital computer for developing mine sampling theory, simulation of ore deposits, and analysis of mine sample and assay data. This report is one of a series describing use of the digital computer for rapid solution of computing problems in the mining industry.3 4 Development of a computer program to compute ore reserves by the commonly used triangular method was necessary so that results could be made available for analysis within hours.

An improved mathematical model with the attendant computer program to calculate multiphase fluid flow in petroleum reservoirs is presented. The model is used to simulate the behavior when a fluid is used to displace hydro-carbon fluids in a reservoir. The method is an expansion of a previously published method, in Bureau of Mines RI 7011, but handles constant injection rate as an alternative to constant pressure. Program documentation is provided along with thorough explanations of the added program features. Using the program, the petroleum engineer can calculate oil recoveries for different flood patterns and operating conditions and select the conditions most likely to optimize recovery. Experience with the previous model demonstrated the need for the improvements in order to simulate reservoir behavior more accurately. The improved method will result in improved oil recovery. In this paper, the significant improvements are described in detail so that anyone interested can put the program to use.
