A 32-channel continuous monitoring system has been developed to monitor radiation working level (WL), fan operation, and air door position. The system consists of a surface receiver unit and an underground transmitter that is connected to the various monitors. A continuous WL monitor used with the system can generate alarms at two different WL readings. One of these levels is variable from 0.00 to 0.99 WL and generates an alarm on the surface receiver. The other level, fixed at 1.0 WL, generates an underground alarm in the vicinity of the monitor. The detectors for fan operation and air door position work on the principle of a completed circuit to the underground transmitter (multiplexer). When the circuit is broken, as is the case when a fan is off or an air door is open, an alarm is generated at the surface receiver. This alarm remains in effect until the circuit is completed, signifying the fan has been turned on or the air door has been closed.

Since 1941 the Federal Bureau of Mines has been conducting an intermit-tent program of placer and lode investigations to evaluate the potential tin resources of the western Seward Peninsula tin belt. Previous investigations were made in the Potato, Cape, Brooks (Lost River), and Ear Mountain areas. As part of this program the Bureau made a reconnaissance of reportedly tin-bearing stream gravels in areas adjacent to the previously worked tin deposits at Lost River and Potato Mountain. The objective of the reconnaissance was to determine if additional areas might be favorable for lode or placer exploration. The work was begun late in the fall of 1956 and completed during the following summer. The streams sampled were the Lost River and York Creek in the Brooks Mountain area and the Anikovik River and Kigezruk and Baituk Creeks in the York area. Samples were obtained by churn-drilling methods employing conventional placer-evaluation procedures. Holes were drilled at wide intervals at sites chosen as being representative of drainage areas rather than of individual gravel deposits. Minor to trace amounts of tin were found in the gravels of all these streams, but the highest grade was 0.35 pound of tin per cubic yard in the gravels of Lost River below the mouth of Tin Creek. Small amounts of gold were found on Baituk Creek and in one hole on the Anikovik River; the highest grade did not exceed 10 cents per cubic yard. Traces of scheelite and barite were found on York Creek, chromite was encountered in one hole on the Anikovik River, and minor amounts of titanium minerals (probably derived from basaltic intrusives) were found in the York area.

The Mining Law of 1910 , with amendments of 1914 and 1928 , is at present in force in the Dominican Republic . The first and basic mining law of the Republic was passed in 1876 , and although numerous changes and amendments have been made from time to time , the new laws and amendments thereto have not changed the original or basic law materially . However , these enactments have materially changed the legal methods governing the exploitation of the mineral resources of this country and have added new regulations and requirements to those concerning certain specific minerals , etc. The original or basic law still exists as it was first promulgated to protect the rights of the Dominican Republic itself , the rights of the landowner , and the rights of prospectors in general . The Mining Law of 1876 remained in force , without amendment , until it was superseded by the law of May 25 , 1904 , an enactment modeled after the Mexican mining law and designed especially to encourage the investment of

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the ?fire door? type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in "Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self -Propelled Electric Face Equipment/Automatic Emergency Brake s II by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. Monazite sand is the only commercial source of cerium, other rare-earth metals and thorium. Although used in rather small quantities, it is essential to many industries. The United Unites is entirely dependent upon British India and Brazil for its supplies. Monazite sand or sand imported under the tariff classification for monazite was shipped to the United States in greater quantities, in 1940 than ever before. About 75 percent of our imports was from British India and most of the remainder from Brazil. If need be, Brazilian production can be expanded to supply all of our essential requirements, and the theater of war expands in the Pacific Brazil may supersede India as the principal source. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES The mineral monazite is generally honey yellow or may vary from greenish yellow to clove brown. The Bureau of Mines constructed a torsion effusion apparatus to measure the equilibrium vapor pressure of pure metals, alloys, and compounds at temperatures up to 1,500° K. The reliability of the apparatus was established by determining the vapor pressure of silver. One phase of the work of the Bureau of Mines in health and safety is promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory-protective devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for self-contained breathing apparatus,3/ gas masks,4/ supplied-air respirators (hose masks, air-line respirators, and abrasive-blasting helmets, hoods, or masks),5/ dispersoid (dust, fume, and mist) respirators,6/ and nonemergency gas respirators (chemical-cartridge respirators).7/ Approval tests of self-contained breathing apparatus are conducted under the supervision of mining engineers of the Accident Prevention and Health Division} Region VIII; approval tests of other types of respiratory-protective devices are conducted by the Health Branch.

"INTRODUCTION AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTSAt the request of the lessees, the Pearl tract was examined in February 1946, by Otto Ruhl, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines. From the evidence of old drill logs and from the few available records of mining operations on the Pearl and the adjoining Trussel (Big Tom) tract, it appeared that a relatively small churn-drilling program might develop enough lead-since ore to justify resumption of mining. In March 1946, funds were allotted for churn drilling, and the work was begun the following month. Ten holes totaling 1,933 feet were completed before the close of the project in August 1946. The work was under the general supervision of C. H. Johnson, chief, Rolla Division, Mining Branch, and under the direct supervision of the Bureau project engineers. 3/In its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to our national security and economy, It is the,of the Bureau to publish the facts development by each project as soon as possible after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, makes preliminary examinations and conducts investigation of mineral deposits. The Metallurgical Branch, O. C. Ralston, chief, participates in this program by making beneficiation tests and analyses. In the present project, no metallurgical tests were made, and for the sake of speed the samples taken were analyzed by a local commercial assayer. 4/"

Electrorefining tests using titanium-nitrogen alloys as anode material showed that no significant quantity of nitrogen was transferred to the cathode deposit. The nitrogen of the anode remained in the scale, and the titanium-nitrogen alloy was anodically insoluble in the electrolyte when the nitrogen content was 11 weight-percent.

The oxidation kinetics of Ni-Y alloys in the range 0.04 to 8 weight-percent Y, and of high-purity Ni, were compared by the use of a sensitive volumetric apparatus. The reactions followed approximately the parabolic rate law; for oxidations in 02 at 0.5 atm and 1,200° C, the parabolic rate constant was about 0.37 + (0.064) (Y-2.11) mg cm-2 min-1/2, where Y represents the weight-percent Y in the alloy. Internal oxidation of Y occurred in the alloy specimens and the resultant Y203 particles, which were in patterns related to the eutectic structure of the alloys, served as markers showing that the subsequent oxidation of the surrounding Ni was by inward diffusion of O. The scale consisted in each case of NiO, but the inner parts of the scale on the alloy specimens included the patterned Y203 particles. The thicknesses of the inner parts of the scale depended directly on the Y concentration, and the thicknesses of the Y2O3-free outer parts of the scale were inversely related to the Y content of the alloys. There is thus a relationship between the thickness of the outer part of the scale and the protectivity of the scale. Outward diffusion of Ni and inward movement of 0, from the inner boundary of the Y2O3-free part of the scale, is proposed as a mechanism for these results.

Three coals from the Wilkes on - Carbonado district of Pierce County , Washington , were subjected to washability analyses to estimate the amount and quality of washed coal obtainable . Because the coals were unusually difficult to clean , the washability examinations were supplemented by table tests , tests in dense - medium cleaning units , and flotation tests . None of the coals could be reduced to the desired 10 percent ash by tabling and the response to flotation by two of them was poor . Dense -medium treatment provided coal of the desired quality , but with the most difficult coal the recovery efficiency was lower than usual .

The Bureau of Mines estimated the remaining lode gold endowment of eight mining districts in Alaska using historic production data. A log-arithmic model of cumulative tonnage of ore processed versus cumulative grade was applied to the following districts: Chichagof, Fairbanks, Homer, Hope-Seward, Juneau, Ketchikan, Prince William Sound, and Willow Creek. To assess the remaining endowment, a computerized production data base was compiled from Bureau records. These data were aggregated in 5-yr intervals for each district. Data were sorted in order of declining grade, and log cumulative grade was plotted against log cumulative tonnage. Linear regression was performed on the data for each district. The linear equation for each curve was used to predict remaining endowment at a limiting mining grade. Based on conservative extrapolation of the grade-tonnage curves, a substantial total endowment of 8,415,100 tr oz of gold remains in the eight districts. The districts with the greatest remaining endowment are the Juneau, Chichagof, Fairbanks, and Willow Creek Districts.

Are the safety rules in your work place effective? Do supervisors enforce them as they should? Do supervisors abide by these rules? Safety rules are an important aspect of many company safety programs, particularly if employees must work in an intrinsically hazardous environment such as a coal mine. However, for various reasons, supervisors sometimes fail to enforce safety rules (Arvey & Jones, 1985; Hartshorn, 1998). This paper presents some findings obtained from interviews with coal miners about why supervisors sometimes fail to enforce an important mine safety rule. It also contains a few suggestions addressing what could be done to help supervisors perform this job function more effectively.

Bureau of Mines routine crude-oil analyses of 88 samples from 60 fields are presented in this report. Similar analyses from other fields in California have been published in previous reports listed in the appendix, page 52. Yearly production of crude oil in California and the percentage of United States production represented by California production for 1948-54 are given in table 1. [ ] Analyses in this report are of samples from the fields listed in table 2, with production data for 1953, cumulative production through 1953, and year of discovery of each field. Information regarding the source and general characteristics of the samples is included in table 3 with a summary of analytical and computed data.

Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-363/. The second report gave the same data? for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 19364/. The third report of the series gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1936-375/. This report covers 63 brands of gasoline represented by 1,136 samples excluding the Pacific Coast. Those from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative than others.

Comprehensive geophysical measurements were made in the Tertiary Channel gravel deposits of Badger Hill, Calif., with the refraction seismograph, gravimeter, and well logging equipment, to develop a three-dimensional physical model of the gold-bearing gravels. Tests were also made of the applicability of magnetometer and electrical resistivity techniques. Results of 14 seismic profiles revealed four distinct layers with velocities of 1,600 ft/sec for loose gravel, 5,900 ft/sec for compact gravel, 8,600 ft/sec for cemented, blue gravel, and 15,500 ft/sec for bedrock. The depth to bedrock along the middle of the channel varied from a minimum of 100 feet in the hydraulically mined pit area to a maximum of about 300 feet in the upper bench area immediately south of the pit. These geophysical methods revealed that 40 percent of the drill holes necessary to delineate the deposit could be eliminated, at a cost saving of at least 30 percent.

This report describes in detail a unique occurrence of fersmite, (Ca, Ce, Na) (Cb, Ti, Fe, Al)2 (0, OH, F)6, which occurs as small anhedral inclusions and intergrowths with a tantalum-free columbite found in the metamorphic complexes of Ravalli County, Mont. Chemical and crystallographic data along with the physical and optical properties agree in general with those given in the original description of fersmite from the Ural Mountains of Russia. X-ray diffraction data not given in the original description and more specific optical data have been determined. The Montana fersmite, now established as the second occurrence of this rare calcium-columbate mineral, was discovered during a routine Bureau of Mines mineralogical examination of a prospector's sample.

Carbon reduction of rutile and ilmenite in nitrogen and ammonia atmospheres was studied as a method of preparing titanium nitride . Ammonia was a better nitriding agent than nitrogen . The contact between the solid reactants , carbon and rutile , was a prime factor in nitrogen atmospheres and was of lesser import in dissociated ammonia . The reduction process for conversion of rutile to the nitride required carbon . The nitriding of ilmenite- carbon mixtures produced titanium nitride and elemental iron .
